PRIDE 2018

WELCOME TO BRISTOL PRIDE 2018 We are all so excited to be here after so many months of planning, and to share all the events planned for the festival this year. Pride has grown from strength to strength and this year we’ve expanded the festival to two weeks as we continue to use the arts to showcase our culture and to champion our LGBT+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans) community. We use our events not only to overcome stigma, prejudice, and shame, but also to showcase incredible talent and, of course, to celebrate. Keep an eye out for our new circus event, expanded comedy night, dog show, and our film festival which includes a selection of the best short films from BFI Flare. We’re also proud to be working more closely with UK Black Pride and KIKI Bristol to ensure Pride is a welcoming and inclusive space for LGBT+ People of Colour. As well as an LGBT+ PoC block in the parade, we’re hosting a special social with UK Black Pride and KIKI on Friday 13 July. We’ve kept Pride Day a donation entry event, so those who might need Pride the most, but couldn’t afford a high ticket price, are able to come. It does make our job so hard but together we can do it. As well as 2 weeks of events, Pride Day includes over 10 hours of entertainment with incredible performers and high-profile artists. We ask everyone on Pride Day to make a donation of at least £3 to keep Pride happening, but if you can, please get a £5 supporter wristband. They include your donation but also offer great rewards including free bus travel on Pride Day and money off at the festival bars. Our £15 fabric wristbands offer entry to 3 afterparties including “Tempest” the official afterparty at the O2, The Queenshilling, and Punka at the OMA; a simple and cost-effective way of supporting Pride to happen. Globally we continue to see backwards steps for LGBT+ rights. We know Pride will be an amazing fortnight of events and visibility, let’s amplify our voices for those who have theirs taken away. Even here in Bristol we’ve seen hate march on our streets and into our venues. It’s a reminder that we must never be complacent and of why Pride is so important. A reminder that we must keep working year-round and that we do not have equality unless we have equality for all. Daryn J Carter Bristol Pride welcome

29 JUNE - 5 JULY

FILM: FREAK SHOW

Billy Bloom (Alex Lawther) is one-of-a-kind: a fabulous, glitter-bedecked teenager whose wit is matched only by his daring fashion sense. When forced to live with his straight-laced father, he’s like a diva-out-of-water in his new ultra-conservative high school. Undaunted by the bullies, fearless Billy sets out to make a big statement in his own inimitable way, challenging reigning mean girl (Abigail Breslin) for the title of homecoming queen. This is an empowering, irresistible ode to outsiders and nonconformists, with an all-star cast, including Bette Midler. For times and bookings visit www.watershed.co.uk

FILM: THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST

EVERY GENERATION NEEDS A NEW REVOLUTION Cameron is a teen in love with one of her female classmates. When the pair get caught in a moment of intimacy at a high-school dance she is quickly packed up and sent off to “Pray Away The Gay”.

8:40pm

TIME PRICE

£10 / £8

VENUE

Watershed

Subjected to outlandish discipline, dubious “de-gaying” methods, and earnest Christian rock songs, this unusual setting also provides her with an unlikely gay community. For the first time, Cameron connects with peers and she is able to find her place among fellow outcasts. Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass, (500) Days of Summer) delivers an outstanding performance as do the ‘bad kids’ that she falls in with, Adam (Forrest Goodluck), and a girl who goes by the name ‘Jane Fonda’ (Sasha Lane). There are moments of humour but it’s never joking. This is a serious, poignant and compassionate LGBT+ story. A lot of LGBT+ films get called important and vital, we feel this one truly is. As the conversations around conversion therapy still rages on and our own government refuses to ban it in the UK, this is film that will speak to so many, especially the up and coming generation. FILM: SIDNEY & FRIENDS

A BEAUTIFUL AND POWERFUL EXPLORATION OF INTERSEX AND TRANS LIFE IN KENYA Scottish filmmaker Tristan Aitchison visited Kenya in 2013 where a chance meeting with an activist revealed an underground network of intersex and trans people who wanted their voices heard. This is a heartfelt exploration of the hopes, dreams, and everyday reality of a group friends fighting to survive on the edge of Kenyan society.

Sidney grew up in rural western Kenya. He didn’t like wearing skirts or doing chores that girls are traditionally supposed to do, preferring herding cattle and playing football. When he flees his family’s prejudice he meets a group of transgender friends in Nairobi. Together, they fight discrimination and discover life, love and self-worth. Welcomed into their community, Aitchison recorded six young people who bravely shared their candid stories over a long period. While things have gradually improved over the last few years, Kenya has various discriminatory laws affecting LGBT+ people and this moving story reveals what it’s like to live life as a targeted minority. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Director, Tristan Aitchison. Tickets available via the Watershed Box Office. Tel: 0117 927 5100 or www.watershed.co.uk

Sophie Ducker Self-proclaimed “sexy-cerebral comedy underdog” she’s quickly establishing herself as one of the most exciting new acts on the circuit. She’s been shortlisted for the BBC New Comedy Award and is a Funny Women Awards finalist. Starring in a comedy pilot for Channel 4 called Riot Girls, as well as a pilot for Comedy Central UK, she founded and hosts Manic Pixie Dream Girls, an international, intersectional feminist comedy show that appeared at Edinburgh Fringe in 2016 and 2017. As a comedy writer you’ll have heard her funnies on The News Quiz, The Now Show and BBC Radio 4, we’re excited to welcome such talent to Bristol Pride.

Sarah Keyworth Originally from Nottingham, Funny Women Awards 2015 first runner up and Laughing Horse New Act of the Year Semi Finalist, Sarah Keyworth is fast-becoming a regular on the London circuit and has recently supported Stewart Francis on tour. Her material is a mix of honest anecdotal storytelling about her Midlands upbringing, made surreal with the occasional addition of a silly observation. She delivers sharp lines with a cheeky smile and moments of sudden deadpan that leave the audience wanting more.

Elfy Lyons Elfy Lyons is an award-winning red-hatted comedian and clown from London. In 2017 her solo show SWAN was nominated for the Edinburgh Fringe Best Show Award and the Malcolm Hardee Award for Comic Originality. Named on the BBC New Talent Hotlist 2017 and in British Vogues 20 Names of Now, you can expect to see a lot more of Elfy and her new show ChiffChaff, which debuts at the Edinburgh Fringe later this year. She’s just been shortlisted for Fringe World’s Best Comedy Show Award and we are excited to have Elfy perform in Bristol for Pride.

KEEPING IT GREEN

GREEN ON THE PRIDE FLAG STANDS FOR NATURE, LET’S CARE FOR IT. Every year we work to reduce our carbon footprint in a number of ways. From sourcing our infrastructure locally so we don’t have lorries bringing kit from all over the country to ensuring our food traders are local and source their ingredients locally too. We’ve also asked them to ensure that if they do need to give you packaging that it is compostable and have banned plastic cutlery. We’ve been working extremely hard to reduce our plastic waste and have saved on average 100kg of waste plastic over the last two years. Our wristbands are ‘litter free’ so we don’t have lots of little bits of plastic left over. Even this programme is printed on recycled paper using vegetable dye and has been delivered to venues by bike. BUT we need your help to reduce our impact and there’s several ways you can help. PLEASE DON’T LITTER we have over 100 bins onsite with recycling facilities - use them! It is so disheartening to see the amount of waste needlessly left on the floor after the festival. Not only does it shame us all,

32

keeping it green

but Pride then have to pay extra money for clean-up and also have to find extra volunteers to help us litter pick. Cup Scheme: You’ll pay a £1 deposit on the first drink at Pride and you’ll get a reusable cup. That’s yours for the whole day. Bring it back with you to the bar each time you get a drink and you get a new one. When you’re done return the cup and get your £1 back, or you can donate it to Pride. Free Water Refills: We again welcome Refill Bristol to Pride, we’ve had them at the festival for the last 3 years and we are proud to see their campaign to reduce bottled water usage go national. They will be offering free water at Pride so bring reusable bottles to fill up, or you can buy one from them on the day. This helps us save hundreds of waste plastic bottles. Travelling to Pride? Forget the car and get discounted travel with Bristol Ferry Boats and free bus travel on Pride Day with First Bus with a supporter wristband. Glitter. We love it and we know you do too, but did you know glitter is a micro plastic that doesn’t degrade in our oceans. There are environmentally friendly alternatives; Lush have natural based products to make you shine, use a mineral based shimmer, or do your homework and find one of the newer, biodegradable options on the market.

A WORD WITH... What do you do for Unite Students? I am part of the finance team. I have worked at Unite in different capacities, for more than 20 years now. It’s great to have Unite Students as our headline sponsor again this year. What did it mean to you, to have Unite involved with Pride? I am really proud that I was instrumental in getting Unite involved in Pride last year for the first time and because it was so successful, the company was keen to be involved again this year. It feels like a personal achievement and is wonderful to see the progress Unite has made, in the time I have been at the company. Do you think there are still challenges for LBGT+ staff in the workplace? Well yes. And I think there will be for some years to come. However, the difference in attitudes between when I started work, back in 1988 and now, are absolutely massive. What impact do you think Unite Students supporting LGBT+ causes has on staff? There has been a real focus to encourage better awareness across the company, both at an employee level and with the service we provide our students. The Board has put real weight behind these changes so that everyone is aware of how important it is: from unconscious bias training and looking at how we recruit staff so that we increase diversity in the workplace, to setting up a Women’s Network group and a Diversity In Action group.

Louise Lloyd VAT Manager, Unite Students

For students from the LGBT+ community, going to the university can daunting and potentially challenging, how do you support students? Starting university can be challenging for anyone and the LGBT+ community can face additional concerns around belonging. At Unite Students, we are committed to provide a home that is inclusive and where people can be themselves. Our teams are there to support students if they need it, and we work closely with universities to ensure they have the right support, whether that’s helping them to find the LGBT+ network at their university or something else. What does Pride mean to you? A time to celebrate and party! But also, it’s the one time of the year when I don’t feel in a minority, when I feel truly part of a wider society and where my lifestyle is just accepted, without question or comment.
