From the Headmaster When reflecting on a term, there is often a tendency to focus on the landmarks and the exceptional – the plays, the tournament triumphs, the ‘big’ events such as Charter Day.While these highlights will always stand out, in a school as busy and vibrant as BGS, there is always so much more going on and even in a term as short as this one, there has been no shortage of achievements and activities to celebrate.

I

n addition to the many events you will read about in these pages, I have attended a chess tournament in the Great Hall, heard our choir sing at Evensong in Bristol Cathedral, listened to news of our Greenpower racing team’s plans for the season ahead, and had the pleasure of congratulating our sportsmen and women on gaining representative honours in a whole range of sports.

I remain impressed by the energy, talent and determination shown by our students to get involved in these many opportunities, but every bit as pleasing has been observing the generosity with which our students recognise their peers’ achievements.

Attending House assemblies this term, I could feel the warmth and appreciation radiating out from our students as they celebrated each other’s successes. This spirit of friendship is part of what makes BGS so special, and remains firmly in the memories of our students long after they leave.

This term I had the pleasure of welcoming two OBs back to BGS – Mark Watson and Tuppence Middleton – both of whom have found success in their own fields. They both recalled their time here fondly and, whilst impressed by the changes they saw, especially the new Performing Arts Centre, were delighted to find that the essential

REACHING NEW

We are delighted that Bristol Grammar School has recently been approved as a National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme (NICAS) provider. Three members of staff are qualified to run and assess the courses, Director of Outdoor Education Miss Hillyer, Mr Smith and Mr Williams.

Approval as a provider means BGS can now offer the award scheme in School, using our own climbing wall.

Twenty-four Year 10 students have already signed up with the aim of completing the level one award in their half-term Games rotation. Once level one has been achieved there will be opportunities for climbers to progress further through the award scheme, both in Games and through the BGS Climbing Club.

BGS remains unchanged: a genuinely warm and friendly community which appreciates what everyone has to offer.

BGS is fortunate not only in its students, but also in its staff, a fact I was reminded of this term as I interviewed candidates for posts here. I was impressed by the professionalism, commitment and talent of our current teachers interviewing for internal promotion, and heartened by the quality of the external applicants and the obvious admiration they showed for BGS as a school. It is a pleasure to lead such a dynamic and happy community; thank you for your continued support of the School which makes this possible.

News Back to school for TV star

TUPPENCE

We were delighted to welcome former student Tuppence Middleton back to BGS this term. Star of the recent BBC productions War and Peace and Dickensian, Tuppence returned to the School to talk to students about working in the Arts and also to raise awareness of mental health issues in her role as an ambassador for the charity SANE.

PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE UPDATE

Our new Performing Arts Centre continues to progress well towards opening for the beginning of the new school year in September.

Viewing the site from Elton Road, you can see the building is now beginning to receive the bronze and copper cladding panels along with the large format glazing.

These contrast with the impressive stone wall on the front of the building. These materials form the buildings outer skin, providing a watertight and weatherproofed building.

Internally, rooms have been formed through the installation of separating walls.

This provides a real sense of how the PAC will feel once finished. Wiring and cabling to facilitate the future installation of items such as lights and heating/cooling systems is well advanced.

D

uring her visit Tuppence toured the School’s new Performing Arts Centre (PAC) which is currently under construction and said: “The old Mackay Theatre I used here was an awesome space but the new facilities are incredible. It’s the most professional looking theatre space in any school that I have seen.

“It’s great that an academic school is also focusing upon the Arts. When I came here I didn’t know acting was a career I could take and BGS really set me up for doing anything that I wanted to.”

Tuppence returned to BGS for the afternoon on Tuesday 2 February with representatives from the charity SANE, to lead a workshop with a group of BGS students, talking about mental health issues and training them to become Mental Health Ambassadors in the School.

The BGS students in the workshop really enjoyed the experience of working with SANE and learnt a great deal. Summing up the afternoon, one student said: “It was really eye-opening learning about the stigmas that surround mental health and the actual realities of the illnesses.”

It’s great that an academic school is also focusing upon the Arts.

When I came here I didn’t know acting was a career I could take and BGS really set me up for doing anything that I wanted to.”

Finishing works will be commencing shortly, including decoration, the installation of floor tiles and carpet and the fit-out of the impressive main theatre and separate music performance area.

hese were the thoughts of two of the guests at Bristol Grammar School’s community friendship lunch on 17 February. More than seventy older members of the local community enjoyed lunch and an afternoon of entertainment at BGS, one of several community projects BGS staff contributed to as part of their INSET day Outreach Wellbeing afternoon.

Other activities included constructing pens for the baboons at Bristol Wild Place, creating a Woodland Wonderland at Windmill Hill City Farm, and a staff samba band playing at Cabot Circus to raise money for the charity Above and Beyond.

After a delicious meal, cooked and served

by BGS staff, the lunch guests enjoyed live music, bingo, a free raffle and dancing before ending the afternoon with tea and homemade cake. The visitors, from the Hengrove, Knowle and Filwood areas of the city, were all connected to the LinkAge Bristol group, a charity that works with the over-55s to facilitate inspiring social activities that enrich lives, reduce loneliness and encourage active participation. Other guests came from St Joseph’s Home in Cotham, run by the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Director of CPD at BGS, David Mair, who initiated the Outreach Wellbeing afternoon, said:

It was an excellent day bringing together all areas of the BGS staff and giving something back to our wider Bristol community. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all.”

Charter Day On 17 March BGS marked the 484th anniversary of the award, by Henry VIII, of the School’s Royal Charter. Daffodils in lapels brought a touch of Spring brightness to the day as the Senior School processed down Park Street to Bristol Cathedral for the service to celebrate our School’s long history.

Congratulations to all our linguists who contributed to this very entertaining evening.

GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND This term, the Senior School are supporting Above and Beyond, the charity for Bristol’s city centre hospitals. As well as a nonuniform day, there was also the fabulous Bag a Book event, a huge sale of new and nearly new books in the JCR. Staff, students, parents and visitors all flocked to the Sixth Form Centre to pick up a bargain book and to enjoy the excellent refreshments on offer, raising over £500 in the process.

EDUCATION FOR ALL The Senior School’s chosen charity for the Autumn term was Education for All, a charity with which BGS has enjoyed a longstanding link. We were delighted to be able to send them a cheque for more than £4,000 and to hear of their plans to use the money to buy and fit wood burning stoves into one of the girls’ boarding houses at Asni to keep it warm in winter when temperatures can often fall below zero.

Any remaining funds will go towards the purchase of equipment for an Audio Visual room for the girls.

HOUSE CHARITY WEEK

Goodman’s and Diamond’s Houses both had charity weeks this term.

Goodman’s raised more than £1,250, to be shared between the National Autistic Society and the National Eye Research Centre, with events including a House Concert and Soak the Prefect.

Diamond’s were raising funds for BILEG Mission in Cambodia, at the suggestion of Senior House Prefect Winston who had volunteered there. BILEG Mission runs an orphanage and has just opened a hospital. Diamond’s cake sales and the sale of Charter Day daffodils helped them raise an impressive amount for this worthy cause.

FROM BGS TO GHANA Last year BGS Head Librarian, Lucille Osafo, arranged the donation of several boxes of withdrawn books from the Library, Bookstore and other sources to the Brighten Your Corner Library Project in Accra (Ghana). She worked with a company called FLOGIC who arranged collection and shipping to Ghana. We are delighted our books have found a new home where they will continue to be used and enjoyed.

Sound, Action and a short trip to Mars Now in its fifth year, the Renishaw Prize Giving started the term as we celebrated the work of over thirty students from Year 8 to the Lower Sixth. Once again the scientific articles covered every area of science and technology imaginable. Greg Nixon from Renishaw kindly awarded the prizes to the following students:

Twenty Year 9 students visited Explore @Bristol to work on an Exo Mars project.

They programmed robots, set them off to survey the surface of Mars (at the other end of the room!) and sent the data back to Earth. Great fun and a real taste of what it is like to work with robots.

This term’s STEM Cafés have focused on the Performing Arts Centre. Max Reynolds, from MACH Acoustics and Saul Eagles from Stage Electrics have explained the art of designing a performance space.

In engineering terms the requirements are very exacting and unlike those of more ordinary buildings. We are looking forward to moving into the new PAC at the end of the year and seeing the finished product for ourselves.

The University of Bristol is on our doorstep and our students benefit considerably from the opportunities offered. Mr Goodland launched Further Biology in September 2015, to enthuse and support Sixth-form students interested in any aspects of the Biological and Medical sciences. Students have enjoyed inspiring talks from a range of speakers, visited Bristol University for practical sessions and run their own sessions in school, including dissections and competitions.

Most recently, global warming was the topic under the spotlight when students attended a lecture on the Orbiting Carbon Observatory, given by Dr Gunson, a NASA Space Scientist. At the end of term, 34 Sixth-form students enjoyed a day of STEM taster lectures. Topics from Cancer Biology to Engineering Maths gave them a flavour of university research areas.

Finally I leave you with my STEM GEM question of the term. π day is celebrated on 14 March every year. π is approximately 3.142, but what is the one-thousandth digit? With the digits of π encircling the school, the one-thousandth digit was found on the stairs to the Great Hall.

presentation evening Old Bristolian Mark Watson returned to BGS in January to present the Class of 2015 with their A Level certificates. The students were treated to a speech which was both inspiring and every bit as entertaining as you would expect from an awardwinning comedian. Many thanks to Mark for taking the time to return to BGS. We hope you enjoyed your visit.

MUN Success

BGS delegates enjoyed their best-ever results at the Bath International Schools’ Model United Nations event held at Kingswood School in March. Our Egypt delegation won Best Delegation, the highest award, against stiff competition from over forty schools including one from the USA and three from Germany, as well as schools from throughout the UK. In total, of the eighteen BGS students at Kingswood, twelve won awards from their peers, acknowledging the success of our students from Years 10 to the Upper Sixth in representing the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Italy and Nepal as well as Egypt. In addition, there were two awards for Elliot and Jack (both Year 10) as Best Junior Delegates.

Infants & Juniors

Mr Huckle writes…

As the whole BGS community looks forward with great excitement to the opening of our Performing Arts Centre, it seems an opportune time to reflect on the wide range of performance opportunities available to Infant and Junior pupils.

A

fter last term’s wonderful Infant Nativity, our younger children continue to benefit from both a drama club and the Infant Choir run after school.

They have had a fantastic Superheroes drama workshop and they love their curriculum dance lessons. Thoughts are now turning towards the end of year showcase – the Infant Summer Concert.

There is a strong emphasis on performance for the Junior School children in the Spring term. Early in January, 110 children and staff travelled up to the Genting Arena, NEC Birmingham, to perform in the Young Voices concert. The experience of being part of a 5,000 strong children’s choir and working with professional singers and musicians is something that stays with the children throughout their school lives.

Our Performing Arts Day in February takes the form of a mini-Eisteddfod with the children participating in classes for drama, dance and singing. The day also features our keenly contested House Singing Competition. A wonderful new

feature of the day was that adjudication and advice was provided by drama, dance and music scholars from the Senior School.

The Performing Arts Day, along with the regular Tea Time Concerts at which children share their music making with friends and family, serves as an audition for MADD Evening (Music, Art, Dance and Drama) which provides a showcase for the performing arts with a variety of solos, duets and trios. There are also some group performances, including our country dancers and Irish dancers. The largest group is our Dance Company who represented BGS so well at the Stages Dance Festival for schools throughout the Bristol region held at the Colston Hall.

This term also saw presentations by our pioneering group of Year 6 pupils who have completed the Arts Award Explore level and will get their certificates soon; a magic week during which Senior and Junior children performed mystifying acts of illusion in assemblies and some great creativity from a group of children who have

Year 2 had a fantastic time learning all about China and the Chinese New Year this term. They made their own Terracotta Army and learnt how to use chopsticks.

enjoyed exploring Shakespearean drama as one of our Friday afternoon activities. In addition, auditions have taken place and rehearsals are well underway for our Year 6 play The Wind in the Willows.

Every week there is some form of performance and it is very evident to me how much these performance opportunities enhance children’s enjoyment of school and help them develop their confidence. Oh… and they really love dressing up too, as most recently demonstrated by their fantastic costumes on World Book Day!

New Year, New Look

BGS Infants’ very own Gromit saw the New Year in in style, with a fresh coat of paint and a whole new look and new name for 2016.

Thanks to artist Toni Cogdell, Gromit has been painted in a Brazil theme in readiness for the Infants’ whole school Summer topic, Brazil, and Reception’s Rainforest topic. Gromit also has a new name to go with the new look. After two rounds of voting, the children chose ‘Tropical’, suggested by Sonny in Year 1, which goes very well with his exciting new look.

Roman Baths trip

Year 3 travelled back in time with a trip to the Roman Baths in Bath (or Aquae Sulis as the Romans knew it) this term.

The children chatted to a Roman trader around the side of the baths who was trying to convince them to buy olive oil and jewellery as a gift for their slave (aka Miss Durkin).

They also had the opportunity to handle Roman artefacts, including a strigil – a tool used to scrape the skin clean. Dead skin of famous and important Romans was collected in a bucket and sold as a face mask. It was believed that whoever wore it would absorb the strength and power of the famous person. The children (understandably) thought this was particularly gross!

Infants & Juniors Zoo-tastic!

Rainforest Roadshow

Our youngest BGS Infants had a brilliant day out at Bristol Zoo in January. They really enjoyed learning about animals that live in the rainforest and even got to meet some Madagascan hissing cockroaches. The rest of the day was spent exploring the zoo and visiting all the animals who live there.

The children of Year 4 had a wonderful day learning about rainforests! Dave Shaw, a rainforest enthusiast and expert, brought an array of amazing photos, artefacts and insects with him, to share with the children.

Highlights included getting up close and personal with the scaly milk bottle snake and super hairy, bird-eating tarantula, as well as sampling rainforest treats such as plantain, cinnamon bark and pure cocoa. It was also really interesting finding out about the people of the rainforest and sad to hear the problems both they and the wildlife are facing. This has definitely inspired the children to try and do their bit to help save the rainforest.

Animal magic

Year 1 have been learning all about Animals this term and have been lucky enough to enjoy visits from Maureen and her guide dog AJ, local vet Mr Pickering and his Dalmatian Dottie and, most excitingly of all, two police horses and their riders. What did Miss Penny do to end up in handcuffs, we wonder?

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND Year 1 enjoyed a Space topic day this term.

They spent the afternoon stargazing in the Explorer Dome, but before that our collection of astronauts and aliens got busy in the kitchen, cooking up earth cookies and alien pasties. They all had an amazing day and we’re sure you’ll agree that their outfits were out of this world!

Infants & Juniors Young Voices

What a night! On Friday 15 January, a hundred children from BGS Juniors travelled to the Genting Arena in Birmingham to take part in the Young Voices concert.

The children joined more than 5,000 other performers in a massed choir.

Before the concert there were three hours of rehearsals to perfect the songs and the actions, and much excitement as several famous singers and performers took to the stage.

The arena was packed with supporting friends and families for the concert and the audience enjoyed an amazing performance, featuring songs such as River Deep, Mountain High, Video Killed the Radio Star and a medley of Madness tunes.

Congratulations to everyone who took part; it was a long day but most definitely worth it.

Full STEAM ahead

Year 6 enjoyed a wonderful, informative trip to STEAM, the Museum of the Great Western Railway in Swindon.

The children, dressed as evacuees, were a delight to be with; full of questions and enthusiasm as they learnt what life was like for children in wartime Britain.

MADD for it The impressive talents of BGS Juniors were on display on 17 March at MADD Evening in the Great Hall. This brilliant event showcased music, art, drama and dance and featured solo and ensemble performances from across the Junior School, providing the audience with a truly memorable and enjoyable night. Well done to everyone who took part.

Sixth Form ON THE FAST TRACK

Each year a large number of BGS Sixthformers undertake the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). The qualification allows students to extend their knowledge well beyond the confines of the A Level curriculum into any area of interest, and offers a valuable opportunity to gain independent study skills, research and referencing experience.

T

his year four candidates at BGS undertook their EPQs on a fast-track timetable, completing it at the start of the academic year in September, rather than the usual February. Topics included dancers’ injuries, the history of cake, and primary education in Africa, illustrating the variety of subjects studied. All four fast-track students – Martha Lindsay, Erin Whalan, Sarah Dixon and Lucy Waldren – found their EPQ experience enjoyable, as well as valuable. They were also all awarded an A* grade for their work, a truly impressive achievement.

Sarah and Erin, both of whom are intending to study Physiotherapy at university, tackled projects around injury and muscle soreness, allowing them to demonstrate both commitment to and indepth knowledge of their proposed subject at university interviews. Lucy and Martha found their EPQ similarly useful to discuss at interviews and both received conditional offers with lower grade requirements thanks to having completed the projects, in recognition of the independent study skills they had been able to demonstrate.

Requiring at least 120 hours of work, most of which the girls undertook over the Summer holiday, the EPQ requires hard work and commitment, but offers a valuable learning experience for the students who undertake it.

Congratulations to Scribble-In Bristol, BGS’s 2016 Young Enterprise team: best trade stall winners at the St Nick’s Market event in December, overall winners at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway trade fair in February and through to the area finals of the Young Enterprise competition with their beautiful colouring book for adults, featuring iconic Bristol locations. Sixth Form As well as vlogging for Off the Record’s YouTube channel, Sara has volunteered at fundraising and awareness events. At School, she set up the BGS Mentality team who created a poster campaign around the School to raise awareness of mental health issues.

Sara also applied, and was accepted, to be a representative for the South West on the NHS Youth Forum. As a forum member she has met with NHS staff and managers to talk to them about young peoples’ needs and their views on the services offered.

“For me, the big thing was knowing support was there, and that there are others in the same boat as you. Off the Record helped me recognise that it is ok to feel how you do, and gave me the tools to help cope with things in the future,” Sara explained.

MENTAL HEALTH

HERO BGS Sixth-former Sara Levingston has been nominated as a Super Hero in the Bristol Young Heroes Awards 2016, in recognition of her work volunteering with Off the Record, a Bristol-based charity providing youth mental health support and services.

S

ara, who joined BGS in the Lower Sixth, had used the service and found the support it offered invaluable. As a consequence, she decided to get involved with Off the Record’s Mentality project, a group for young people who want to influence the services and direction of Off the Record.

By being open about my experience, hopefully it will make it easier for others to open up if they are struggling, and by giving back to the charity I can ensure others have the same opportunity for support that I did.”

t February half-term a group of 22 students from Year 10 went to Ronda on the return leg of the Spanish Exchange. We arrived in Ronda on Sunday to be happily reunited with our exchange partners in time for the late Spanish lunch and spent the rest of the day with them and their families.

We spent four of the next five days visiting places in and around Ronda, seeing the stunning cathedral in Seville, admiring the impressive and inspiring Mezquita (mosque/cathedral) in Cordoba, and shopping and playing football in the sun on the beach in Marbella. We also had the opportunity to attend a day of school with our exchange partners which was very different to school at BGS due to the lack of school uniform and how casual it felt. In the afternoon, we had the football and chess competitions. We won all the football games (even the girls’ team!) but unfortunately lost some of the chess.

We were lucky enough to be in Spain during ‘Carnavales’, the festival leading up to Lent, and many of us went out in fancy dress on the final Saturday to join in with the parades. We were given many opportunities to practise and improve our Spanish and we all had a wonderful experience that we would strongly recommend. Some made firm friends with their exchange partners and are planning to return to see them in the summer.

Over half-term, ten Lower Sixth French students spent a week in Bordeaux, staying with host families and taking part in intense French schooling. Each morning was spent in the Alliance Française, a school for people learning French as their second language. Here, we were put in classes with people from different countries and cultures with the understanding that we would not speak anything but French to one another. However daunting this was, we had friendly teachers and understanding from the other pupils who were all in the same position.

Throughout the week we had various afternoon activities including cheese tasting, in a very French (and rather smelly) cheese shop, and a walking tour around Bordeaux, including a heavy downpour of rain which gave us an excuse to stop for a coffee! We also watched a French film as a class, and had a day-long excursion to St Emilion, a beautiful town, full of vineyards, just outside of Bordeaux.

There we took part in wine tasting and explored the beautiful underground churches. The rest of the afternoons were spent exploring Bordeaux and finding bookshops and boutiques, as well as doing some shopping in order to stay ‘à la mode’.

We all enjoyed the company of our families and spending a week with them really boosted our confidence in our French, and helped us to learn some true French lingo. We would recommend this trip to everyone doing French because as well as creating amazing memories and new friends, we also learnt a lot of French, making our upcoming exams seem a bit less scary!

For the third year in a row, a group of intrepid Year 8 students headed to Berlin to soak up the festive atmosphere in the Christmas markets of the German capital.

It was an excellent opportunity for them to try out the German they had been learning for the previous few months, as well as trying some local specialities such as Currywurst and Lebkuchen. Berlin is great to visit at any time of year, but the lights and decorations of Christmas make it more special. In addition, students were able to visit some key historical sites in the city, such as the Brandenburg Gate, Holocaust Memorial, and Olympic Stadium, as well as the surviving parts of

OUR EXCHANGE TRIP TO MANNHEIM German language, German culture, German friendships: all this we brought back from Mannheim to Bristol at the end of the second leg of our school exchange.

The eight BGS students and two teachers who travelled to Mannheim had some fantastic experiences, not only as a school group, but with our host families.

In Heidelberg, we climbed up to the ‘Königstein’, from where one can see the whole city. We had a guided tour of the castle, led by a very amusing former actor. We spent a day in the pretty town of Speyer, where the ‘Technikmuseum’ provided us with a lot of fun and interest.

We swam in gorgeous open-air pools, ate as many ice cream flavours as possible, tasted ‘Knöpfle’ and ‘Hefekuchen’, explored German markets, had barbecues in summer gardens – it is a fabulous variety of memories.

Of course, we also accompanied our hosts to lessons at the Lessing secondary school. How different it is in Germany! You have to be in school horribly early, which does have the advantage of an earlier finish. There is also no uniform, which means that the relationship between pupils and teachers is less formal. And there is less technology in the classrooms, which surprised us. Of course, we had to ‘earn’ our place as guests and help in the English lessons, by being asked searching questions such as ‘Explain the British in three words’ and ‘Describe the British way of life.’

We are proud that we dared, for a short time, to live in another, unfamiliar world.

We are grateful that we had such generous and kind hosts. We will of course return!

Events which have had an impact on global history have been played out in Berlin and whilst they may seem very abstract to our younger students, they in turn started to appreciate the impact on everyday life of totalitarian regimes, the separation of families and friends, and the jubilation which the arrival of freedom and democracy heralded. All students were enthused by the visit, with a number telling me that they want to take other family members there to show them around!

We look forward to returning with next year’s Year 8 students in December 2016.

Exploration February saw some of the coldest temperatures of recent times in New York, reaching -20 on Valentine’s Day! But it took more than a winter chill to freeze the spirits of the BGS party as we crossed Brooklyn Bridge for an unbeatable night-time panorama of a city so epic they named it twice.

HISTORY IN THE

USA New York was, for many, the highlight of an intensive History and Politics tour which also took in Washington DC and Philadelphia. Some twenty Lower and Upper Sixth students, accompanied by the incomparable Mr Thackray and the irrepressible Miss Glenn, were given a whistle-stop introduction to American History by means of visits to locations central to recent and distant events.

Washington offered us the numerous, and free, Smithsonian Museums for art, space exploration and natural history, together with a visit to Congress on Capitol Hill.

We were able to enjoy seats in the public galleries to listen to debates in both the House and the Senate. A visit to the new Martin Luther King monument was another highlight. In Philadelphia we heard the clarion call for liberty and independence, while noting that slavery was very much a live issue for the Founding Fathers themselves.

The related theme of immigration was also uppermost in our minds in New York as we went by boat to Ellis Island to sample the experience which millions of migrants underwent as they sought entry to the Land of the Free. Later, we saw how the tensions between different generations of immigrants into Brooklyn could be brilliantly dramatized in a blood-soaked, much-garlanded production of Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge. It was a British production which transferred to Broadway, a fine example of the spirit of pan-Atlantic exploration which our own, more modest, tour sought to emulate.

Drama Festival

On Monday 25 January the six Senior School Houses took to the stage of the Wickham Theatre for the 2016 House Drama Festival. Each House performed an original play, chosen from a selection written by BGS Creative Writing A Level students, and staged after just one day of rehearsals.

All six casts worked very hard and we congratulate them and their student directors on putting on such impressive productions in such a short space of time. We were delighted to welcome Old Bristolians Katy Maw and Joseph Elliott back to BGS to judge the competition and are very grateful to them both for their time and expertise. Individual performance of the Festival was awarded to Thompson (Catchpole’s) while the overall Festival winners were Goodman’s House.

The talents of Edwards’s, Goodman’s and Catchpole’s Houses were all on display this term in their House concerts.

Students from Year 7 to Upper Sixth took to the stage to perform and all three concerts provided an excellent evening’s entertainment, and an appreciative and friendly audience for the performers, whether they were representing their House for the first or the last time.

Another fantastic evening of House Dance lit up the Great Hall this term. There was plenty of talent on display in both the group and solo categories, but equally obvious was the enjoyment and enthusiasm of the dancers. Well done to all who took part, particularly Anora s, Jess and Tash Junior Group winners for Scott’s House; Sam Junior Solo winner for Hilliard’s; Ella Senior Solo winner (Diamond’s) and Hilliard’s Lower Sixth group who won the Senior Group category.

Performing Arts LUNCHTIME LIVE This term saw the launch of Lunchtime Live, with not one, but two informal lunchtime concerts being held in J16. Lunchtime Live provides a great opportunity for our ensembles to perform in a relaxed environment, and for students and staff to enjoy a musical interlude in their day.

BATTLE OF THE BANDS

MAJOR MUSIC SPRING CONCERT The Great Hall was the venue for the Spring Concert on Monday 7 March. The audience was treated to performances from a range of ensembles including the BGS Orchestra, Big Band and Mantata.

There was also a diverse range of musical styles on display, from Vivaldi to Robbie Williams, all of which were performed with aplomb.

In January, the JCR was the scene for an evening of friendly musical rivalry to determine who would win this year’s Battle of the Bands. Well done to all who took part, especially to the victors, Curly and the Whalers, who reprised their winning performance of Somebody that I used to know at the Spring Concert.

It Snows BGS was delighted to take part in NT Connections, the UKs biggest youth theatre festival, again this year.

Featuring a group of students aged 14–18, Tenacity, the BGS company, performed It Snows at the Bristol Old Vic on 16 March, following three preview performances at School.

Congratulations to the cast who worked hard to put on a passionate and beautiful piece of theatre.

Reflections, the BGS dance showcase featuring performances from GCSE and A Level Dance students, took place at Failand in March.

Congratulations to all who took part, the creativity and artistry on display provided an inspiring evening of performance.

Literary Events TIM HAYWARD

DAVID ALMOND

Ever wondered how to roast a suckling pig? Bone and stuff a pig’s trotter? Create the most superlative chip butty? Well Tim Hayward – writer, broadcaster, restaurateur and Old Bristolian – had all the answers on his recent visit.

The Sixth Form Creative Writing students were privileged to have multiaward winning Young Adult novelist David Almond visit BGS on Thursday 10 March.

He is best known for Carnegie Prize Winning novel Skellig, but more recently has been adapting some of his other novels for the stage. The students had many questions for him, ranging from ‘what were your first memories of writing?’ to more technical questions about the inherent differences in writing for stage compared to writing for the page. The students, currently in the midst of completing their A2 Creative Writing coursework portfolios, lapped up his erudite responses, spoken in his famously mellow Northumbrian accent.

The extended writing exercise he led for the students was focussed on the fact that the imagination is a constant facet of being human which is just waiting to be tapped in to.

Almond, the most influential Young Adult novelist of our time, brought an array of his own personal notebooks and stressed the importance of how the process of writing is a messy one, and not the refined and precise act we might at first think.

The students found this most reassuring, and benefited from his expertise and encouragement.

A JCR’s-worth of listeners was spellbound by this animated and hugely entertaining speaker. Hayward’s latest book, The DIY Cook, is full of fascinating food projects rather than recipes, packed with history and anecdotes … and about as far from a conventional cookery book as it’s possible to get.

“People want easy recipes that are quick and effective and give impressive results. But most people will only ever cook one recipe from each cookery book.

And I didn’t want to write like that,” he explained.

If people are only going to do one recipe, let’s expand the recipe with history. It’s not just about following instructions, it’s about maybe spending a whole day doing something, learning and laughing about food and then getting your friends and family round to eat what you’ve made.”

Tim Hayward explained in detail how to make a shooter’s sandwich, a recipe dating back to Victorian times, with layers of mushroom duxelles and steak built up in a sourdough loaf then pressed in readiness for a day’s shooting.

And he caused great amusement as he recounted various ways of squashing roast duck to make Canard à la presse. The method he devised for his own version?

Putting the duck in a tin and driving his sportscar over it. It worked!

Tim, who attended BGS for a year when he was nine, also spoke about his time at the School and its role in his development as a food writer.

“I never forgot the Great Hall and when I arrived today I asked if I could see it again; I was thinking to myself: ‘If it’s not still the biggest, grandest thing I’ve ever seen, I’ll be disappointed.’ But I wasn’t disappointed: it was great.”

He also praised the philosophy of schools like BGS, which his father also attended: “I can see that BGS instils a sense of ‘I can do this. I can learn.’ It’s really inspiring.

Schools like this give you a confidence and massive inquisitiveness which still informs my writing today.”

The students were treated to a unique insight into how he wrote his most recent novel, A Song for Ella Grey, inspired by the myth of Orpheus, and were able to ask him directly about its influences and inspirations.

Of the abundant literary events and opportunities offered to students at BGS, the students who attended this event knew this surely was amongst the most inspiring and useful, and will remember Almond’s words of wisdom for the rest of their writing lives.

Literary Events A GREAT HAUL

MARCUS SEDGWICK On 1 March Marcus Sedgwick came to give the A Level Creative Writing students a workshop, focusing on the important features to consider with characterisation, and the links between character and plot.

Firstly, we were given names: Alexandra, Bob, Archibald, and Sam and asked to write three facts about each of them. It was surprising how much people inferred from only the names. Whilst Bob, had variable qualities (a fishmonger, an accountant, a railway enthusiast), the characteristics of Archibald were more based on preconception. Archibald had a minor title usurped from him, was incredibly rich, wore the same suits every day… We realised that it was these sorts of specific characteristics that were more memorable and important than more surfacelevel traits.

After this, we were given random images of people and asked for twenty features about them: from where they lived and how old they were, to more off-the-wall things such as what song they would be (which people found particularly difficult).

We then shared these with the group.

Following on from characterisation, we began to focus on the structure of plot. This began with a simple exercise of rearranging verses of a song into the order of the story they told. From here we advanced to the arrangement of a film plot (which was a challenging activity) for a film that we hadn’t seen. We learned how the use of three acts in a film helps

On 8 March, BGS celebrated its fruitful collaboration with Penguin and the ten year anniversary of the Allen Lane and Puffin Prizes. The handsome Great Haul anthology, edited by David Briggs and Roland Clare, contains all the winners and runners-up and is a wonderful smorgasbord of flash fiction, poetry and short stories that showcases the many talented students we have had the pleasure of teaching.

Extracts from the anthology were read by students past and present and by members of staff which made for a varied and entertaining evening. Hearing the pieces again I was struck by the scope and breadth of the writing, from Joseph s baroque and hilarious The Richmond Rider, to the miniature marvels that were Sarah s The Church

to make the action more balanced, and Marcus told us about how characters and plot must be intrinsically linked. His own writing process, he said, is 95% thinking, in contrast to only 5% writing. He did, however, warn us to take his advice with a pinch of salt, saying that

being a writer is both wonderful and terrifying, as there is no right way it can be done.”

It was both entertaining and very useful to have Marcus Sedgwick make a return to BGS and speak with us in great detail; if he’d like to come back again, we’d be delighted to have him.

Piano and David s Spots. Particular mention should go to Ellie who read Theatre, and who has the distinction of having won the competition on three separate occasions as well as being a runner-up once. Annie made the journey from Sheffield especially to read her piece and Joseph read the moving Adrian’s Wall.

One of the many excellent things about the competition, and our association with Penguin Random House, is that the students receive feedback from professional editors and we were lucky enough to have Alexandra Antscherl, Executive Editor of Puffin Fiction, at the event. Alex wrote the introduction to the anthology and rounded off the evening by giving a thought provoking speech.

Many thanks should go to Lucy Shepherd, David Briggs and Roland Clare without whom the anthology and the evening would not have been possible.

Author shows her

TRUE COLOURS

There are not many children’s colouring books that take Alfred Hitchcock, Rosa Parks, Elvis Presley and Charles Darwin as their inspiration. But author and illustrator Roz Streeten proved what a compelling combination this can be, when she came to talk to the Infant School on 2 February about her work.

She explained how her Famous People colouring concertina draws on iconic images and photographs, adapted and simplified for children to colour in and add to as they wish, and in the process gave her enthralled audience a mini history lesson on everything from American civil rights to the work of artist Frida Kahlo.

She also talked in detail to the children of Years 1 and 2 about her series of Rosie Flo and Johnny Joe colouring books, and how they came about. Roz explained to the children,

My oldest daughter Sophie always loved watching me do little drawings; and when she was about four or five years old she started asking me to draw a baby boy crying and a baby girl not crying,”

“So I started to help her draw different expressions and then she started asking me to draw dresses to go with the faces and I must have drawn about two hundred for her to colour in. My two daughters seemed to love this way of colouring and being creative and I realised other children might like it too.”

And so the idea was born. The Rosie Flo books were soon followed by another series, for boys, called Johnny Joe. The

latest additions are a range of colouring concertinas covering everything from famous people and fashion shows to dogs and their owners.

Year 1 and Year 2 spent a hugelyenjoyable morning colouring in specially printed cards selected from some of the colouring books. And of course, the adults couldn’t resist having a go either!

Sport NETBALL The netball season has been characterised by the enthusiasm and support shown for the sport. The girls are fielding four teams each Saturday at U12 to U14 level, three at U15 and five in the Senior ranks, twenty teams in total.

The First VII has made great progress this term, coming back from early defeats to Taunton and Clifton College to record wins against Colston’s, Dean Close, Downside and Queen’s Taunton. Other teams have been enjoying similar success, with the U14As enjoying a fantastic season – unbeaten to date, including victory over the BGS U15s in our Super Saturday event, the only age-group upset of the weekend.

RUGBY

HOCKEY The boys’ hockey season has also provided a number of significant highlights. The First XI have only lost three games all season and recorded some great victories, including a 6–2 win against KES Bath and 2–0 against Beechen Cliff. The Second XI have also performed strongly, losing only two games.

There has been similar success in the lower age-groups: the U16s have qualified for the regional rounds of the National Hockey Cup in Cheltenham, the U15As remain unbeaten, the U14s got through to the Semi-finals and the U13s finished third in the County tournament, and the U12s have played very strong hockey all year, losing only one match.

There have been some excellent performances from our Sevens teams this term. At the end of the half-term holiday, the U12 and U13 boys competed in the annual Bristol Schools’ Sevens tournament. The U13 boys narrowly missed out on a place in the final, losing just one group game to go out of the competition. However, the U12 boys were able to go one step better, securing overall victory in comprehensive fashion and extending their unbeaten run into this format.

At U18 level, the BGS team made light work of the opposition in the group stages of the tournament, out-scoring their counterparts with great skill and flair.

This set up a nail-biting semi-final with Colston’s School, before beating Bristol Cathedral Choir School in the hard-fought final to claim the cup.

Having missed out in the Bristol tournament, the U13s returned to action in the Crypt School Sevens. After close games in the group stages, they found themselves in the plate competition, where a determined fightback from an apparently losing position saw the boys end as Crypt School Sevens Plate winners.

Individuals from across the School agegroups continue to make their mark within the representative programme: several are involved with the Bristol Academy while Jamie (Irish Exiles) and Will (England U16 and U17 training squad) are making their presence felt at a much higher level.

CRICKET

Climbing continues to be a popular and well-supported sport at BGS. In the Climbing Academy Schools’ series the Junior and Senior boys’ teams both finished in second place, but were trumped by the girls’ teams, who finished their respective competitions in first position.

In the Individual rankings, Immy finished first and Eleanor hird in the Junior girls’ category and Matt came second in the Senior boys’ competition, runner-up only to a member of the GB climbing team.

The BGS swimming team performed admirably in the Bristol Schools’ Swimming Gala, swimming with great determination and spirit. Luca Oscar Oliver and Robbie all qualified as individuals for their respective finals, and the Intermediate and Senior boys’ relay teams qualified for their relay finals.

Their efforts were rewarded in the finals with two silver medals.

The team also performed admirably in a gala against Clifton High, securing a convincing victory. Well done to all involved.

Three BGS cricketers travelled to the sub-continent for training and match practice over half-term. Gloucestershire age-group player Matthew a Year 10 student at BGS, put his skills to the test during an eleven-day trip to India.

Speaking before the trip, Gloucestershire Academy director Owen Dawkins said: “It is a tough experience but a great development opportunity for him.

“He will have the chance to bat all day against the local bowlers and develop his skills on surfaces that are completely different to those he is used to.”

Rishi from the Upper Sixth and Ellie of Year 11 also travelled over half-term. Both were part of the Gloucestershire Cricket Board (GCB) age-group squads who went on tour to Sri Lanka.

At BGS, the U13 and U15 girls won the Bristol Schools’ round of the Lady Taverners’ Indoor Cricket tournament to go on and represent Bristol in the county round. Well done also to Year 8’s Harriet who has been promoted to the U13 Gloucestershire County Cricket squad from the development team.

FOOTBALL The Football season started with the annual local derby, away to QEH. Despite some closely-contested games, none of the three BGS Senior teams were able to triumph, making it three wins out of three for the home team. The First XI bounced back from this early defeat to record wins against Wells Cathedral, Bromsgrove, Clifton College and Taunton, and may well have had more success, were it not for the wet weather causing cancellations.

In March, the U14 and U15 sides took on QEH and redressed the balance somewhat, recording two draws and two wins, including a 4–0 victory for the U14B team.

BADMINTON In the Schools’ National Badminton Championship, the girls’ U16 and U14 teams were knocked out in the first round, but the experience gained should stand them in good stead for future years. Meanwhile, the boys’ U14 team progressed to the County finals where they lost out to a strong Gordano team to finish second.

In the same round, the U16 team won gold and went through to the South West regional finals held in Plymouth in mid-March. After a strong start in the group stage the team threw away a winning position, which cost them the chance to play for a place in the national finals, but recovered to reach the bronze playoff. This match reached a score of 2–2 in games and 14–14 in the deciding game, but the BGS team held their nerve to claim the winning point and third place in the South West.

CYCLING Oliver (Year 11) has been awarded five certificates by British Cycling in recognition of the national records he has set in track racing. During the ParaNational in September 2015 he broke the previous records in 500metres, 200metres and 2km races and then in the ParaInternational in November, he broke his own 500m and 200m records. Ollie now has his name in the record books alongside household names such as Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins and Sarah Storey. He is currently working hard to prepare for this season’s road racing and hopes to be selected for the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020.

Gloucestershire Rugby Land Rover Cup

Congratulations to Charlie who ran a personal best and finished second in the 60m for the U17 age-category in the South West Indoor Championships and to Alice who won a bronze medal in the U13 200m sprint for the South West of England in the Junior Open indoor event in Cardiff in December.

Tara represented BGS equestrian at Chew Valley School’s showjumping in March. Tara and her pony jumped two excellent rounds with no faults in either class gaining second place in both.

Finswimming

Well done to Anton who took part in the British Open Finswimming Championships, and came first in all four races he swam in – 25m bi-fins, 25m apnea and 25m surface (monofin) – and broke three records for his age-group.

Connor was awarded the trophy for being the overall U11 age-group Winner for Bristol Henleaze Swimming Club.

Alysia won two gold medals in February at the County championships to bring her total to seven gold medals and two silver. Luca took bronze-medal position at the ASA Gloucester County Championships in the 50m freestyle with a great PB of 29.37 seconds. Congratulations to them all.

Well done to Eleanor who represented BGS in the U17 open weight category at the IAPS Schools’ National Judo Championships. For the second year in a row, Eleanor won all her fights with maximum points to become the National Champion, while being the youngest and lightest in her category.

Well done to Jake (captain), Ben and James who were part of the Clifton Rugby U12 team who won the Gloucestershire Land Rover Cup for the second year running.

Well done to Issy who finished sixth in Great Britain and first in her year of birth in the slalom at the English National Championships in Italy.

OBs OXFORD VARSITY MATCH AND DINNER

THE ANNUAL DINNER Ten years after leaving the Sixth Form, a group of us from the class of 2006 returned to BGS for the 104th Annual Dinner in the Great Hall. Although many of us meet up a couple of times a year, it was nice to have the opportunity to dress up for this special occasion. There was a lovely atmosphere in the hall with OBs of all ages coming together for the dinner, including the familiar faces of other leavers from our year and some of our old teachers.

We were welcomed by one of the Deputies of School, Shanuk Mediwaka, who gave grace, and we later sang Carmen Bristoliense, the School song, with much gusto. After dinner, the Headmaster and current President of the OB Society, Mike Burmester, each gave a speech before David Perkins was introduced as the new President of the OB Society, followed by some great entertainment provided by

Tony Rice – appropriately also an OB – and the other Deputy Head of School Cara Vaitilingam.

A special mention to the Sixth-formers who did a great job at waiting on us, and to Anisa Rawlinson who impressed us all with her magic tricks – you may say she put on a spellbinding performance!

We had a very enjoyable evening at the OBs Dinner, and would like to pass on our thanks to all those involved in organising it.

We were delighted to hear that OBs Annie Koehli (Keeble) and Maddie Burnell (St Peter’s) were both selected to play for Oxford in the Varsity Hockey Match. Annie has been Captain of the side this year and has worked hard to build a strong team spirit. Oxford won the game 2–1 in what was a close-fought match on a bitterly cold day.

In the Men’s match Richard Barlow was playing in the Oxford team that lost 2–1 to Cambridge. We are delighted that Richard will be joining the BGS teaching staff in the summer to work in the Geography Department.

A few days later the Old Bristolians’ Society hosted the Oxford Dinner at the University Club and we were pleased that both Annie and Maddie were able to share their Varsity success with the Headmaster and the other guests.

KEN STRADLING OB Old Bristolians bring

CROWDFUNDING TO BGS When Jonathan May, Duncan Knox, and Tom Sellers left BGS in 2002 we are sure they could not have envisaged that they would be working together today. The trio launched and run Hubbub, a social enterprise that brings crowdfunding to the education sector, offering universities, colleges, schools, and their students and staff, an accessible, alternative method to obtain social funding for their ideas and projects from their personal network and alumni.

As alumni of the School they have chosen to back BGS to become the first School in the UK to launch a fundraising platform.

Many pupils across the School have been involved in getting this project up and running. It has provided them with a unique opportunity to understand about the power of social media and alternative methods of raising money.
