WELCOME TO Thank you so much for your interest in Bristol Grammar School and for thinking of us for the next step in your child’s journey. We know that when people hear “BGS” they often think first about academic success – and yes, we’re proud of what our pupils achieve – but there’s so much more to life here. I hope this magazine gives you a real sense of that.

Inside, you’ll get just a snapshot of what makes BGS such a special place: the opportunities our pupils throw themselves into, the strong sense of community, and the care and support that underpin everything we do. You’ll read about how we approach pastoral care and meet some of the brilliant staff behind it. You can also discover ‘My BGS Story’, which helps pupils reflect, grow and build character. This focus on wellbeing and personal growth is what really allows children to flourish – not just in the classroom, but in every part of their lives.

The results we are proud to be able to celebrate each year are not built on academic focus alone. They come from helping every child to discover their passions, to grow in confidence, and to become the best version of themselves.

Our brilliant pupils, supportive families, and dedicated staff work together to create a school with kindness, curiosity and resourcefulness at its heart.

There have been many highlights this year.

One standout moment for me was a visit to the Rosslyn Park Sevens tournament, where our girls’ rugby teams played for the very first time – a moment in BGS history that was a joy to witness.

As a physicist, I must also mention a Year 10 mini-astrophysics conference, where pupils used our telescope’s new solar filter to track a sunspot and calculate the sun’s rotation – usually a project for undergrads, not 15-year-olds! And that’s just the tip of the iceberg; there have been so many other memorable moments, just a few of which are shared in this issue of View.

We’d love to welcome you and your family to BGS so you can experience for yourself the energy, the warmth and the sense of belonging that make this place so special. I look forward to meeting you, and to showing you how a BGS education helps children thrive – ready to take on the world.

This is my seventh year as Head of BGS, and it’s been a privilege to watch our pupils grow. The Class of 2025 is especially close to my heart – they started Senior School the same year I did, so I’ve had the chance to see their whole journey. Watching them grow into confident, thoughtful young adults has been humbling and inspiring. We’ve celebrated their successes, supported them through challenges, and seen them become people ready to take on the world. It’s a powerful reminder of why our work in education matters and why we take such pride in every young person who leaves here ready for their next chapter.

CELEBRATING THE CULTURES OF BGS In May we held the first ever BGS cultural celebration evening. Over 100 guests from across the whole school, from Reception to Year 13, came together to share their traditions and heritage, and to learn about those of others.

In a celebration of the 44 cultures that make up our diverse school community we shared dance, poetry, music, food and recipes – showcasing the rich traditions and artistry of our families’ different cultures.

BGS REACHES FOR THE STARS There has been plenty of science in action at BGS recently. This year, BGS physicists descended on the Failand sports grounds to witness a celestial spectacle: a partial solar eclipse. Using the school’s telescopes, students had the chance to witness the alignment of the sun, moon, and earth in what’s known as syzygy.

In other exciting celestial news, BGS also ran a mini astrophysics conference to showcase some truly exceptional work from a group of Year 10 students to a visiting audience, including astrophysicist Matt Lodge from the University of Bristol. Using the newly installed solar filter on the observatory telescope, they tracked the movement of a sunspot across 48 hours and calculated the sun’s period of rotation, using advanced geometric analysis.

With these new facilities, we know that the future for astrophysics at BGS will be out of this world!

AT B G S We’re excited to announce that, from October 2025, a brand-new multiactivity holiday club will be available, based right here at BGS. Run by experienced provider, uKids, the club will be open every day in the BGS holidays, providing a wide-range of fun and exciting activities for children aged 4–12 (Reception to Year 7).

Each day is built around uKids’ six activity pillars: Operation Outdoors, Everyday Experts, Brain Busters, Crazy Crafts, Super Sports and Massive Moments. From nature trails and science experiments to creative arts, sports, and specialist workshops, children can look forward to days filled with learning, adventure and fun.

The timetable, shared in advance, means you will know exactly what’s on offer each day, while the convenient timings (8.00am–5.30pm, with a late pick-up option until 6.00pm) make the club a flexible choice for busy families.

It will be open to all, so siblings at other schools can also join in the fun, with discounts for siblings and full-week bookings. For more details, head to the uKids website or speak to the BGS Admissions team.

Introducing

Chapter One From September 2025 we welcome Chapter One into the BGS family as our catering partner. A national, marketleading catering business, Chapter One have a passion for educating children on nutrition, not only through preparing delicious, healthy and filling food, but by informing children about where their food comes from and how its prepared.

Experts at catering for different ages and palettes, Chapter One will develop tailored solutions for I&J and the Senior School, as well as for the Sixth Form, where they will develop more of a café feel for those of our older students who may choose to eat at school.

Our catering staff are a critical part of the BGS family, central to the care of our community and, while our catering partner may be changing, our staff team is not. This means pupils will be greeted by the same familiar faces when they arrive for their meals, although they may spot a few changes to the counters in the Great Hall.

Bees are essential to our ecosystem, and our BeeGS Club gives pupils a brilliant hands-on chance to learn about beekeeping, the bee life cycle, pollination, and just how much we depend on them for our food. This year, for the first time in Bristol Grammar School’s 492-year history, Latin wasn’t on the timetable for our Year 7 pupils – at least not right away.

Instead, they’ve been on a linguistic journey through four distinct, ancient language cultures. They began their journey in Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt, exploring the origins of letters, numbers, and stories that have shaped civilizations across the world today.

Year 7 have discovered that our letters come from Egypt via the Phoenician alphabet, and our numbers come from India via the Arabic mathematicians. From stamping cuneiform like the Sumerians (“really tricky – an almost impossible language”) to decoding Egyptian hieroglyphs and researching the pharaohs, our Year 7 pupils have loved uncovering this rich global history and discovering stories and cultures from beyond Europe.

After Christmas, their journey took them to Ancient Greece, before they met the people of Pompeii and began to learn Latin in the Summer term. This journey invites our pupils to reflect on the diverse origins of ideas and cultures, discovering the global threads that connect us all.

A DAY OF DISC VERY Our youngest pupils enjoyed a fantastic science enrichment day in April, which included a special visit from the Explorer Dome. Infant pupils crawled into the dome to experience the world of light. They learnt about different light sources, shadows, and electrical currents. Everyone was wowed by the light show and loved hearing stories of the origin of light from around the world. In the afternoon, Ms Taylor (a biologist from our Senior School) and

her Sixth Form scholars headed over to the Infant School to continue the day’s events. They arrived with a chameleon, bearded dragon and stick insects. The children were fascinated to hear about the animals and were even able to hold the giant stick insects. It was a day full of wonder, curiosity, and a little bit of hands-on magic – inspiring our youngest scientists to explore, ask questions, and discover the world around them.

Five questions; Five minutes In conversation with the Head of Bristol Grammar School Infant and Junior school, Dan Simson.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING AHEAD OF THE NEW ROLE?

We’re delighted to be welcoming Dan Simson to BGS in September 2025 as Head of BGS Infants and Juniors. As he takes on his new role within the BGS family, we find out what’s important to him and what his first few weeks might look like!

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO?

I’ve actually been lucky enough to take some time off over the last few months and spend valuable time with my family whilst bolstering my energy for the exciting role ahead. I really enjoy the outdoors and especially fishing, cricket and hiking and so have particularly enjoyed having time to walk in the Brecon Beacons with my father. It was a rare chance to talk and reconnect with each other over a matter of days rather than the few snatched moments we all get used to in our busy lives. I know the values of family and community are ones that BGS share with me. They are key to creating a supportive environment for children to thrive and as a school for the community, this is something I look forward to developing further at BGS.

I’ve enjoyed meeting many of the parents, children and staff at BGS over the Summer term and am really looking forward to getting to know what it feels like to be a child at BGS, to understand how they experience the school and how their day feels for them. Play is such an important developmental tool, it’s key to a child’s ability to learn and I’m excited about seeing how we integrate this into our teaching and open up further opportunities for this in our classrooms and activities. Having met many of the staff, I also know I’m joining a fantastic team who are passionate about developing each child and I’m looking forward to working with them and partnering with our parents and carers.

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO BUILD ON THE STRENGTHS ALREADY IN PLACE AT BGS INFANTS AND JUNIORS? One of the things that drew me to BGS was the incredibly strong foundation already in place – from the dedicated staff to the warm, inclusive atmosphere and the school’s commitment to academic and personal growth. My aim is to spend time really listening – to children, staff and families – to understand what is already working so well and where we might stretch ourselves further. BGS is already a school where children are happy, engaged and achieving – and from that strong base, we can continue to innovate, reflect, and evolve together.

WHAT APPEALS ABOUT BGS? As a parent of a child in the Senior School I was already familiar with BGS, so I knew enough to understand that we share a common belief that a child who feels known, nurtured and celebrated is a happy and fulfilled child. Getting to really know children and their families is key to this, to ensure they are able to grow and fulfil their potential to the fullest. I know that we are starting on common ground and I can’t wait to get started!

WHAT’S YOUR VISION FOR EVERY CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT? For me, education is about unlocking every child’s unique potential – not shaping them into a single mould.

That means ensuring each child feels supported, encouraged and stretched in a way that’s right for them. Whether it’s in the classroom, on the sports field, in creative arts or through pastoral care, I want every child to have access to opportunities that excite them and to adults who believe in them. A successful school is one that nurtures confidence, independence and curiosity – qualities that stay with a child for life.

Activities Week

A huge thank you to all the visitors, staff and instructors who made the week so special and I&J Friends for supporting such an important week. Here’s a flavour of some of the activities on offer this year — we’re looking forward to next year already!

Always one of the most exciting events in the I&J calendar, this year's Activities Week was no exception. Swapping lessons for life skills, our pupils took part in a series of unique sessions to spark their interests, help build their confidence and feed their curiosity, both inside and outside the classroom.

Scooters, Skateboards and Circus Skills

Finance Workshops Our Year 5 pupils were introduced to the essential world of money management. Through real-life scenarios, they explored how to budget, save, and tackle financial decisions. From working out the cost of a weekly shop or comparing mobile phone plans, pupils developed a great understanding of financial responsibility and management.

The Scooter and Skateboard Workshops unsurprisingly were a huge hit. Pupils zoomed through the playground, tackling courses and trying tricks.

Despite a few stumbles and falls, pupils displayed real determination, continuing to get back up, encouraging each other, and trying again.

The Circus Skills session was equally as popular. Infant pupils took on the challenge of learning how to juggle, balance feathers, and even tightrope walking! Whilst having all the fun of the fair, it was lovely to see the children support each other and get creative with their new performance skills.

Guide Dogs UK

Mini First Aid The Mini First Aid session offered students a hands-on introduction in dealing with emergency situations.

From learning how to treat cuts and nosebleeds, to what to do if someone is choking, pupils showed great focus and maturity as they tackled this tricky topic.

Whilst learning practical skills, students were also reminded that empathy and consideration for others is equally important. Knowing how to act in an emergency can make all the difference, and our pupils left feeling confident and ready to help if ever needed.

One of the most memorable moments of the week was the visit from Guide Dogs UK. As proud sponsors of a Guide Dog puppy, pupils were excited to learn about how guide dogs are trained and how they help people living with vision impairments to live actively, independently and well. The stars of the session, of course, were the two visiting dogs themselves.

Starting in Year 7 We know that the thought of starting secondary school can sometimes feel a bit daunting, so we asked some of our Year 7 pupils to tell us about their experience of starting at BGS and to share their tips and tricks to help you settle in.

What was your first day like?

How did you make friends when you first started?

At the beginning, our form tutors put us with people that they thought we might get on with and that we might be able to make friends with easily, so that helped make my friendships right at the beginning.

The staff and pupils are so friendly. You can find people with different interests and that’s how I made friends.

On your first day, you don’t really have any lessons.

We were just getting to know everyone and having some time in the form room.

I really like the seating plans in lessons because they are mixed up so you can chat to new people and make friends that way.

I thought I would get lost – but when you get into the school, it’s not as big as you first think, and you quickly find the places that you spend most of your time.

All the staff are really kind and helpful. I think that helped boost my confidence to meet everyone.

What is Year 7 camp like?

I really liked camp because there were loads of different activities – you can just have fun with people that you don’t even know that well and bond with them.

We met different people. We were put into groups with people we didn’t know and made friends really quickly.

It was fun because there were lots of activities at camp.

I especially liked swimming and the campfire in the evening. That was amazing – we had hot chocolate and chatted lots.

Who would you speak to if you were worried about something?

If I had a concern, I would go to my Head of House or Form Tutor because I know they would be there to help me.

Our Heads of House know us really well, because they’ve met with all of us.

You can also just go to any teacher that you find and talk to them if you are worried about something.

There are the peer mentors [specially trained Sixth Formers] as well, who you can talk to at break or lunch if you want to chat to someone.

Outside of lessons, what do you enjoy at BGS? Some of the optional clubs, like drama for example, you can meet people with similar interests.

That really helped me to make friends with people from other classes.

I like the clubs on Wednesday lunchtimes.

There are lots of different opportunities at school – like the drama shows or the dance shows which they do every year.

Your first days at BGS → JUNE MOVING UP DAY: Come to BGS and spend the day with us. You’ll meet your Head of House, your Form tutor and your new classmates. (Plus, there is an evening event for parents and carers to ensure they have all the information needed ahead of the new term in September).

→ FIRST DAY OF TERM: Year 7 start a little later than the rest of the Senior School on the first day of term. You’ll meet up with your Form tutor again, and head to your form room where you’ll get books, your iPad and your timetable and spend some time getting to know your new friends and BGS. You’ll also have your school photo taken, as well as one with your whole class.

The day ends with the Y7 Beetle Drive – a fantastic fun way to meet more people (and maybe win a prize!).

I like lunch at BGS, especially the chicken curry and the shepherd's pie. And for dessert, I like the chocolate millionaire shortbread.

But all lunch is good.

And there’s more → HOUSE PARTIES: Each House holds a Year 7 party in the first few weeks of term. This is a fun event, with party games and food, and a great way for you to get to know your Head of House and the Sixth Form House prefects who help run the party.

What advice would you give to someone to make the most of their time at BGS? Talk to everyone in your form room – not just your friends.

Express yourself – make yourself known to other people.

Try and take as many opportunities as you can. You can learn a lot about yourself just by joining in something new.

→ YEAR 7 CAMP: Your first BGS Senior School residential is an overnight trip to Barton Camp – around 50 minutes from BGS. From hiking to fire lighting, team games to swimming, it’s an action-packed two days.

Careful planning ensures you’ll be with some of your new friends, but you will also have plenty of opportunities to get to know even more of your new schoolmates. The staff team and prefects are there to make sure it all runs smoothly and that everyone is having a good time!

→ HOME LEARNING: There’s no home learning for Year 7s in the first few weeks of term, to give you plenty of time to settle in and get used to your new lessons and the school day. When it does start, its set on a timetable, so you don’t have to worry about having too many pieces to do at once.

→ HOUSE SINGING: A few weeks into term, we have a House Singing event.

You will rehearse a song on the day and perform with your House – this is great fun and there will be lots of House spirit! You’ll also perform as part of the Year 7 choir, which all Year 7 go to as a lunchtime club in their first term at BGS

→ HOUSE HOCKEY AND RUGBY: If you like sport, as well as playing fixtures for the school, you can represent your House in a tournament versus the other Year 7 forms. House sport competitions take place every term with different sports to choose from, so there are lots of opportunities to get involved.

Curious, At Bristol Grammar School, we believe that for pupils to thrive – both in the classroom and beyond – they must feel emotionally secure, valued, and supported. Enjoying school, forming positive relationships, and developing confidence in who they are, all depend on feeling safe and understood. That’s why pastoral care is at the heart of everything we do. We know that when a child is supported emotionally and socially, they are far better equipped to succeed, not just at school, but in life.

Central to this ethos is the philosophy of “Curious, Not Furious,” championed

by Deputy Head (Safeguarding) Fran Ripley, who believes that supporting young people begins with noticing and listening. “Behaviour is communication,” Fran explains.

“When children are struggling, they may not always have the words to tell us – but how they act gives us clues.”

This applies not only to moments of poor behaviour, but to any signs that a pupil may be experiencing emotional or social challenges. A sudden change in attitude, a lack of engagement, or simply a missing blazer might be the first sign that something isn’t right.

Rather than respond with frustration, staff are encouraged to pause and “ask the next question.” This mindset is about more than just managing behaviour – it’s about offering timely, meaningful support. “Being curious tells pupils that we’re interested in them,” Fran says.

“That interest helps them feel safe, seen, and secure.”

This supportive approach does not remove the need for boundaries.

“Students need boundaries,” Fran affirms.

“It’s not that we ignore behaviour, but we try to understand where it’s coming from – which means we can respond in a way that supports them, not just disciplines them.” Clear expectations are maintained, but they are delivered with compassion and context.

A vital part of this support system is the continuity of form tutoring from Year 7 through to Year 11. This long-term relationship helps staff recognise when something is out of character and act early. “Everyone knows it’s a five-year journey,” Fran notes.

“There’s space to build trust, and to work through the difficult moments together.”

At BGS, “Curious, Not Furious” is more than a catchphrase – it’s a way of being.

It shapes how we support pupils through challenge, how we build relationships, and how we help every child feel able to flourish as themselves. The approach has had a visible impact, particularly among older pupils. As teenagers seek independence, they may become less communicative but small, daily check-ins can open doors. “Sometimes it’s just a smile or a quick question that shows a pupil you care,” Fran shares. “That’s often all it takes for them to start talking.”

Ultimately, this way of working helps pupils feel understood and supported – not only during times of visible struggle, but also in more subtle moments of emotional need.

Fran’s hope is that this experience will stay with them into adulthood:

“We’re raising future doctors, teachers, MPs. If they can take this mindset of curiosity and kindness with them, the impact will stretch far beyond our school walls.”

Meet the

BGS pastoral team Here’s a quick guide to some of the people in our pastoral team, and the many ways they help pupils feel at home at BGS.

Rebecca Davies Deputy Head (Pupil Development)

At BGS, every pupil is known and valued as an individual. Care and encouragement come from all directions – whether it’s a teacher celebrating a success in class, a friendly word from the library team, or our IT technicians working quietly in the background to help keep pupils safe.

Alongside this everyday care, we’ve built a strong pastoral structure with dedicated staff in place to make sure every child feels supported. It’s not just about being there when challenges arise – it’s also about celebrating achievements, building confidence, and guiding each pupil so that they are happy and thrive in their time with us.

Kate Conway Assistant Head (BGS Infants)

Starting school is a big step for our youngest pupils.

Many of them take to it like ducks to water, but even the most confident child sometimes needs a little extra support. As the Infant School Pastoral Lead, I work with the Infant staff team to ensure all our learners are on the right path.

Our specially trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistants can help the children learn how to deal with big emotions or tricky situations. Clear expectations are shared in our Pupil Charter, and we teachers are supported by our brilliant Teaching Assistants to help everyone learn and play happily together.

Liz Corrigan Form Tutor

I’m currently a form tutor for Year 8, in my second year with my tutees. I’ll stay alongside them through to Year 11.

This continuity provides an excellent opportunity to build strong, lasting relationships with my tutees and their families.

I deliver most of their Wellbeing lessons, covering personal, social, health and economic education. Topics include everything from friendships and positive relationships to practical skills such as financial awareness – all designed to help pupils grow in confidence and feel ready for life beyond school.

Just as important are daily morning registrations.

These regular check-ins mean I know how everyone is doing and can offer timely support or encouragement when it’s needed.

Andrew Short Head of House

The House system is a fantastic part of BGS. I’m in my tenth year as Head of House; it’s a role people tend to stay in because it is so rewarding to build those long-term relationships. Celebrating the individual is at the heart of what we do; every pupil has their own strengths, passions, and talents, and the House system gives us the chance to recognise and value these.

The Houses offer plenty of fun and friendly competition, from Year 7 parties to House Singing and Sports Day. Through them pupils form friendships across year groups and develop a real sense of belonging and pride. But beyond the fun and games, along with my Deputy Head of House, I also work closely with tutors to provide additional support when needed. Some pupils might need a gentle nudge to push them back in the right direction, or a little encouragement to give them the confidence to shine; as Head of House I'm here for all of them.

Bursary Award Holder Tutor As the Bursary Award Holder Tutor, I work alongside the Form Tutor and Head of House to provide holistic support for our students who hold bursary awards.

I am a point of contact for pupils and their families, as they navigate the challenges of a busy BGS life, and their high aspirations.

We are very proud of our bursary award holders at BGS, and my job is to celebrate them always, and offer support where needed, whether that’s academic, pastoral, financial, or logistical. Through proactive monitoring of students’ achievements and engagement, as well as routine mentoring, both in groups, and one-to-one, my role is to ensure all our award holders thrive.

I work closely with two of our Deputy Heads (Rebecca Davies and Fran Ripley) on pastoral matters and lead on pupil and staff wellbeing. We take pride in taking a proactive approach to giving our community the skills and knowledge to weather the storms we all face. As a Mental Health First Aid instructor, I train staff so they can confidently identify and effectively support struggling pupils with differing levels of need.

I also work one-to-one in support of individual pupils where there are higher level concerns, as well as liaising with external agencies when additional expertise or support might be needed. Our experienced school nurses and trained counsellors, whom I line manage, play a key role in supporting our pupils’ physical and emotional wellbeing.

My role isn’t only about support; it’s also about pupil development – ensuring our pupils are taught the values and skills they need to thrive in school and equipping them with the inner resources they need for life-long fulfilment.

DANCE in WONDERLAND Communicated entirely through dance, the BGS Production of Alice in Wonderland involved a huge cast of 130 students from Years 3 to Year 13.

Exceptional choreography and unique staging transported audiences to the world of the Mad Hatter, the Jabberwock and the Cheshire Cat across three sold-out shows. The cast had an unforgettable experience both performing and being a part of the supportive community.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY Embracing the exciting new challenge of a double cast (ensuring that our wealth of talent had the opportunity to shine) The Addams Family was a ghoulishly thrilling production. With stellar performances, enchanting set and costume design, and the delightfully eerie student band, it was nothing short of magic.

The audience’s reaction was overwhelming: ‘Unbelievable to have two casts of that standard. Superlatives do not do it justice!’ Huge congratulations to everyone involved – what a show!

SHREK THE MUSICAL

It isn’t easy being green – but our talented Year 6 pupils made it look like a fairy-tale! Their ogre-sized production of Shrek the Musical Jr was a resounding success with confident and enthusiastic performances from the whole cast. They brought humour and heart to the beloved characters from the classic family favourite that we all know and love.

Infant Nativity This Christmas, the Infants delivered another unforgettable performance of the nativity – with a twist! Every child shone in a dazzling costume, from wise men to aliens, bringing a playful and imaginative flair to the traditional tale. The story was brought to life through joyful song and dance, expertly performed by BGS’ talented young Christmas stars!

This year's brilliant Senior School play used spaces throughout our wonderful 1532 Performing Arts Centre. The promenade performance took audiences, quite literally, on a journey through the wardrobe and into the magical land of Narnia. A huge well done to the cast and crew on four sold-out performances and for creating such an inventive and impressive version of this well-loved story.

BATTLE OF THE BANDS In two main categories, Years 7–10 and Years 11–13, fifteen fantastic student bands took part this year in Battle of the Bands. With rapid transitions between performances, aided by stagehands and PAC staff, the rock concert included a range of songs from pop and soul to rock and metal, and many in between … such as an entertaining Czech song performed by the band Strč Prst Skrz Krk. In the younger category runners-up, The Flaming Falcons, dazzled with Sweet Child o’ Mine and the winning band, JAW performed a brilliant rendition of Come as You Are. The Year 11–13 category runners-up, playing Call Me, were an outstanding performance and winners, Factor 50, put a stellar contemporary spin on 80s hit It Must Be Love.

MUSIC

ST GEORGE’S CONCERT 155 pupils, 85 hours of rehearsals, 75 minutes of music, 27 pieces, 12 ensembles, 3 schools, one show: the BGS Autumn Concert 2024!

The concert included performances from the Jazz Collective, Cantata (our amazing female choir) and the BGS Orchestra. After the interval, three schools – BGS Seniors, our Juniors and Wansdyke Primary (joining us as part of our outreach programme) – showcased their hard work on Dreamweaver, a collection of five pieces performed by selected strings, BGS choir, BGS Juniors’ harmony choir and Wansdyke’s choir. Not just a showcase for our parents, it was a beautiful demonstration of the musical passion that thrives in the BGS community.

Canvas Competition

This year’s Canvas Competition asked pupils to showcase their creativity, inspired by the theme 'My Bristol'. With so many brilliant entries, it was fantastic to see such a diverse range of perspectives on our city!

A huge well done to all who took part – especially our winners, some of whose artwork has been selected to brighten the walls of Ronald McDonald House.

My BGS Story Launched last year, My BGS Story is an exciting new initiative that celebrates the whole scope of learning at Bristol Grammar School. Designed to recognise children’s progress beyond academic results, it brings together our culture of embracing new experiences with a tool that pupils can truly make their own.

Tamsin Yates, Assistant Head (Learning and Teaching), explains how this project highlights both the fantastic things happening in our classrooms and the many wider opportunities pupils experience during their time at BGS.

What is My BGS Story?

My BGS Story is a digital learning journal that captures each child’s personal journey. It encourages pupils to reflect on their strengths, achievements, and goals, taking pride in their growth both in and out of school.

The project has three pillars: THE LEARNING JOURNEY Pupils set goals and review their progress each term.

LEARNER ATTRIBUTES Linked to our values of kindness, integrity, and rigour, pupils log activities and reflect on how these have developed their skills and character.

ENDEAVOUR BADGES Subject-based challenges that stretch learning beyond the classroom. Examples include cooking a traditional French dish at home, learning the Greek alphabet or writing a report of a philosophical or ethical discussion at home.

Is it just about schoolwork?

What are the benefits?

Not at all. Much of our pupils’ learning takes place outside the classroom.

My BGS Story celebrates the breadth of their experiences – whether that’s trying a new sport, cooking for family, or taking on a personal challenge. These reflections help pupils see themselves as learners in the widest sense.

Reflecting on experiences helps pupils develop metacognition – the ability to understand how they learn and where they thrive. It also builds confidence and self-esteem by showing that growth happens in many ways, not just in classrooms, and isn’t measured only through exam results.

Who is it for?

For parents, My BGS Story opens up conversations about interests and challenges. For tutors, it provides a valuable tool to get to know their pupils more deeply and celebrate their achievements.

In its first year, we piloted the initiative with Years 7 and 8, and we’ve been delighted with their response. It will now expand to Year 9, with plans to adapt it for the Sixth Form in the future as well.

Our vision is for every pupil to create their own digital portfolio, charting their unique journey through BGS.

As Tamsin puts it: “My BGS Story is about recognising that every child’s path is unique. By giving them the space to reflect and share, we’re helping them build a sense of pride and confidence that will stay with them long beyond their time at BGS.”

Daisy’s BGS Story

A member of the BGS Class of 2025, Daisy has now finished her BGS journey and is headed to university to study Medicine. Before she left, we asked her to reflect on her BGS experience and how she felt her time here had shaped her. Read her BGS story below.

When I joined BGS in Year 7, I was nervous, excited and unsure of what to expect. But as I leave, I do so with a sense of belonging and a strong network of now-familiar faces – I may still be uncertain about what’s next, but it’s accompanied by a readiness for these new experiences.

That mindset shaped how I moved through school. I signed up for Greenpower, competed in BGS MasterChef, hiked Snowdonia, had a go at football; I was definitely more suited to cheering on the sidelines than actually playing, but that didn’t matter – I had fun!

One of the best things I found here was that I didn’t need to worry about being bad at something; effort mattered just as much as achievement, and taking risks was as important as getting things right.

Girls' Football, for me, also became a symbol of wider change – seeing involvement in the sport grow and taking part in the first girls’ house football was a reminder that this school is always evolving, just like us.

I also just loved house events. Whether it was our house singing win in Year 11 or competing on Sports Day, they were always a source of joy. A definite highlight was the Lower Sixth House Dance.

Even though Scott’s were robbed of a win (definitely not a biased opinion), the whole process of working and performing together was immeasurably entertaining.

Looking back, I realise how much those moments shaped me. The most formative spaces aren’t always the most comfortable ones; they’re the ones where you feel safe enough to be uncomfortable and try something new – that’s what the house system gave us. For me, this sense of community really captured the ethos of BGS. Whether it was within your house, year group or a community you found within a particular department, you always felt part of something bigger.

Even with all the things I tried, I always found myself back in the 1532 – a space that felt familiar, but also constantly pushed me out of my comfort zone.

Stepping into characters like Annie or Morticia in The Addams Family gave me the chance to be bold and playful.

But Every Brilliant Thing challenged me most. Sharing a one-man show

with seven others, performed ‘in the round’ and dependent on audience participation, it was unlike anything I’d done before. But like most of my experiences at BGS, what stayed with me the most was not just what I did but who I did it with. I’d always looked up to the older students, but in that show, it was the younger students who really left an impression. They are creative, imaginative, curious – and they remind me to remain that way too.

It’s true that BGS changes us as pupils, but what I’ve really valued is the school’s willingness to change too. This year, I worked alongside Dan and Lucy, as well as the wider prefect team, to review the prefect system – a challenge that reflected BGS’s commitment to continuous progress and student voice.

We met with staff, looked at other schools, and asked questions about what leadership actually meant. What stuck with me most was how openly the school listened and how willing it was to adapt.

That’s what makes this place so special – it doesn’t stay static but instead grows with us.

So even though BGS feels familiar as I leave, I know it will keep changing, shaped by the next generation of voices.

But I have no doubt that I’ll always feel part of this place.

Electives

You can choose to study 3 A level subjects (4 if taking Further Mathematics) from a choice of 29 different subjects. Your timetable might take you from analysing Shakespeare in English Literature to programming in Computer Science, before heading into the lab for Chemistry. Another student could spend the morning sketching in Fine Art, debating politics after lunch, and rounding off the day with Music Technology. With such breadth on offer – from Classical Civilisation to Psychology, from Dance to Design Technology – you’re free to choose the subjects that reflect your interests, your ambitions and your curiosity.

Our Electives Programme allows you to dive deeper into subjects that excite you, build the skills that will set you apart from others, and make the most of your time in the Sixth Form. Timetables allow students to study at least one elective alongside A levels, Games and Activities with some students opting to study two electives alongside their studies. You might choose an elective that enhances your studies, or one that offers you the chance to explore your passions.

Beyond the Classroom Games and Activities The Games and Activities programme runs twice a week (one afternoon of Games and one afternoon of Activities) and involves a wide range of things to get involved with. From first team sport to making a difference by volunteering in the local community, there really is an option to suit everyone.

Alongside our main school sports (rugby, netball, hockey and cricket) there is a host of other sporting options on offer, from team sports to individual pursuits. We want every student to be able to enjoy exercise and to experience the physical and mental benefits of being active.

You can double-up your activity levels by choosing more sport for your Tuesday afternoon Activity sessions, or focus your energies on choices including Greenpower, Stage Crew and Model United Nations.

Clubs and Societies There are many other ways to get involved with BGS life through our thriving programme of clubs and societies.

With options both at lunch time and after school, there are plenty of opportunities to join in. Societies and subject specific clubs are a great way to develop your interests and deepen your learning – but there are also plenty of non‑academic options too. With everything from crochet to musical improv, beekeeping to British Sign Language, you can pursue your interests, or maybe even find a new one.

As a Sixth Former, you can also help run clubs for younger pupils, passing on your interests, and developing your skills as a leader or mentor.

From Bristol to Broken Hill Even the clearest career plans can lead to surprising destinations.

Former BGS pupil Sarah Bird (OB 1988) set out to study Medicine at university and qualified as a GP, working first in Portishead. But in 2008 she made the leap to Australia, where she now serves with the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Broken Hill, NSW. We caught up with Sarah to hear about her journey from BGS to Broken Hill.

What are your best memories of BGS? So many to choose from! As the second year of girls to commence in 3rd form (Year 7), I loved the sporting opportunities, the breadth of subjects offered and the ancient science labs piqued my scientific curiosity.

Can you remember any teachers who had an impact on you?

Mr Cox, my house master, was a constant throughout my school years.

I now appreciate the power of pastoral care ensuring stability and continuity.

I'm truly grateful for his guidance and the leadership opportunities he gave me in my senior years. Mr Cockitt, my biology teacher and Sixth Form tutor, clearly saw my potential before I did.

His encouragement and wise words remain with me today.

What did you do after school?

I studied Medicine in Wales, spent the first year working at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport then commenced GP training in Bristol. I joined the Portishead practice as a partner in 2000, took the family to Christchurch, New Zealand for a 6-month sabbatical in 2004 and finally left the practice for Sydney, Australia in 2008.

Mr Cockitt, my biology teacher and Sixth Form tutor, clearly saw my potential before I did. His encouragement and wise words remain with me today.

Why medicine?

What’s next for you?

I only ever wanted to be a doctor. I found the human sciences fascinating and I was intrinsically drawn to learning about health at an individual level, using a broad lens and wide scope of practice. It’s been a privileged career offering many and often unexpected opportunities along the way. No regrets!

This year I’ve been extremely fortunate to be selected for the Royal Australian College of General Practice Future Leaders Program and am working with inspirational individuals both within my cohort and the alumni. I have no idea where this will take me but the future is exciting!

What have been the highlights of your career?

What advice would you give to your younger self?

In 2021, we took a road trip to Far West NSW. We visited Broken Hill, the home of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. RFDS were seeking GPs to deliver primary care to rural and remote communities and I was offered a role to lead the GP team. Never one to turn down an adventure, my husband and I moved to Broken Hill for 12 months. I enjoyed the challenges of recruiting and developing the GP team while managing complex primary care alongside the tyranny of distance and limited services.

As an 18 year old, if you had told me in 35 years time I would be living in Australia with 3 children, 2 grandchildren and working with the RFDS in the outback, I would have never believed you. Just don’t say no to opportunities and follow your passion – look where it’s taken us!

t BGS, our philosophy is simple: to help every child discover a love of physical activity that will stay with them long after their school days. Our PE and Games programme is designed to give pupils the chance to explore, to try, and ultimately to find the sport that feels right for them.

From the very start in Infants and Juniors, the focus is firmly on fun.

Children learn fundamental skills, teamwork and simple strategies, with plenty of opportunities to practise. As they move into the Juniors, everyone will play competitive games – both within year groups and against other schools – and every pupil will proudly represent BGS in a match or tournament. It’s a chance to experience the excitement of competition, the camaraderie of team spirit, and the joy of wearing school colours.

Sporting Snapshots CLIMBING

The 2024–25 season marked a triumphant return for BGS climbing.

Standout performances included the Senior Girls winning the South-West Bouldering Series, multiple podium finishes throughout the year, and team success at the Independent Schools’ competition, where BGS placed first in the mixed event.

The same principles continue into Year 7 and 8, where pupils take part in our core school sports – hockey, netball, rugby (both contact and touch), and cricket.

We want every child to play, improve, and enjoy the confidence that comes from being part of a team. Representing their house and their school helps pupils build friendships, resilience, and lasting memories.

BGS GIRLS AT ROSSLYN PARK

Rosslyn Park National School’s 7s was extra special for BGS this year as we took two girls’ teams for the first time. The U14 Girls finished second in their group, and the U16s top of theirs before being knocked out by the eventual winners.

After such a great debut, we can’t wait to return in 2026!

TENNIS

Incredible performances from our U13 girls’ teams in the Independent Schools’ Tennis Championships at Eton saw our two pairs play each other in the semi‑final of the main draw. The victorious pair, Lara and Valentina, went on the win the gold medal, while Lena and Ayesha took home bronze.

SQUASH SUCCESS

We are incredibly proud of our U18 squash team who won the U18 Mixed England Schools plate competition for the second year running in March!

Well done to the quartet on a fantastic performance at Edgbaston Priory Club, winning 4 from 4 in the final.

’ 170 teams, involving 896 pupils from Year 5 upwards, played an astonishing 942 fixtures’ Beyond the core programme, our co-curricular clubs open the door to even more possibilities – from squash and fencing to basketball, climbing, badminton and football. We also support pupils to compete and represent the school in other sports, for example in athletics, golf, cross country, swimming and tennis.

As pupils progress through the school, their choices grow. By Year 9, with solid foundations behind them, pupils can continue to focus on the main sports or branch out into something new. Our aim is to offer a breadth of opportunities so that everyone can discover a form of activity that excites and motivates them.

We are proud of the scale of sporting involvement at BGS: last year alone, 170 teams, involving 896 pupils from Year 5 upwards, played an astonishing 942 fixtures. But just as importantly, we provide meaningful opportunities for those who prefer a more recreational route, with Games options in Years 9–11 ranging from lacrosse, flag football and ultimate frisbee to fitness sessions, tennis and climbing.

In the Sixth Form, choice broadens again. Alongside their Games afternoon, students can opt into extra sport via the Tuesday programme, whether that’s advanced training for senior squads or fun, active sessions such as squash, table tennis, aerobics, football or softball.

What matters most is balance. At BGS, we support our high-performing athletes and Sports Scholars with the coaching they need to excel, while also ensuring that those who simply want to play for fun, fitness, or friendship have plenty of opportunities to do so. With such a wide and welcoming programme, every pupil can find their place and their own sporting pathway.

WATER POLO GOLF THREE-PEAT

BGS Sixth-former Hattie was part of the England U18 women’s Water Polo team that won gold at the EU Nations Junior Women’s Cup tournament in Brno, Czechia, with the team going undefeated through the competition.

For the third year running the BGS Golf team won the Avon Schools’ Golf Championship. Victory qualified them once again for the English Schools’ Team Golf Championship in July where they finished a creditable tenth out of thirty schools.

DANIELS CUP VICTORY

Well done to the BGS U13 girls cricket team who were victorious in the Daniels Cup competition held at Failand, beating MIllfield in a tight final.

U12 BOYS’ BRILLIANT YEAR

Our U12 boys followed victory in the Bristol Schools Rugby 7s tournament in September with a Spring term win in the Booker Shield hockey tournament.

Rounding out a great year for our U12 boys’ sports teams, they also claimed the cricket County Cup in the Summer term.

Well played boys.

KICKBOXING WORLD CHAMPION

Cristiano (Y11) represented Great Britain at the Kickboxing World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. By the end of the week-long competition Cristiano had become World Champion in one of his individual categories, runner up in the other and helped the 4-man team to become World Champions as well.

Bursary Awards

A bursary award is a means-tested accolade, awarded on academic merit, to a child whose family income is a barrier to attending BGS. These awards can provide up to 100% support with school fees, plus help with other costs.

4 Scholarships † All applicants are considered for our Academic Scholarships. For Creative & Performing Arts and Sports Scholarships, apply by midday on Friday 21 November 2025.

5 Bursary Awards ◊ Our means-tested bursary awards are worth up to 100% of fees. Complete the online application by Monday 5 January 2026 if you’d like to be considered for a bursary award.

6 Assessment Year 7 entrance assessments will be held on Saturday 17 & 24 January 2026. (Your child only needs to attend one session).

7 Decision days We’ll let you know the outcome of your application via email by Friday 6 February 2026. Places offered must be accepted by Friday 6 March 2026.

3 Apply Complete our online application form – you’ll need to write a short personal statement and upload your most recent school report – by Friday 14 November 2025.

4 Scholarships † All applicants are considered for our Academic & Head’s Scholarship Awards. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview following the interview evening.

8 Induction You’ll be invited in to meet your Form Tutor at a Summer term induction day. There’s a chance to socialise with your new classmates too.

9 GCSE Results day Bring in your GCSE statement of results and confirm your subject choices. †

Scholarships A scholarship is awarded to recognise outstanding academic ability or talent in sport or in the creative and performing arts. Scholars receive an annual grant to spend on enrichment in the field of their award, and join our Scholars Programme, which provides a range of opportunities designed to stretch and challenge them.
