Our Mission is to provide ‘an exceptional rounded education to all those who might benefit from it, regardless of their background and financial means”.
Jaideep Barot, Headmaster, Bristol Grammar School
We are a year into our 500 Campaign, through which we aim to raise £12 million by the time our school’s 500 th birthday comes around in 2032. The funds raised will help us to support one in four of our senior school pupils with significant, means-tested fee assistance (at least 50%). Our pursuit of philanthropic engagement to change lives through bursaries, is fundamental to all we do at BGS.
A key aspect of our widening access work at BGS is to switch from the rather traditional focus on what the school is doing for pupils in receipt of bursaries, to what these bursary recipients bring to our school. We recognise and celebrate their achievements, and all that they bring to enrich our community and make this such an exciting place for our pupils to learn in, and for our staff to work in.
They are among our most determined, aspirational and supportive individuals, valuing their education and contributing to school life with curiosity, integrity and, above all, kindness and respect for others. Beyond their place, we also ensure that every one of our students feels a sense of belonging and is supported academically, pastorally and emotionally.
To continue being the outstanding independent school in Bristol, we want and need those bright and engaging pupils who would best benefit from being here, regardless of background and financial means. With all boats rising on the tide, this is how we will continue to stand for the best in learning in the city, for the years to come. It is in essence, after all, nothing more than turning the clock back to our Direct Grant days, when children from all economic backgrounds were able to attend the school.
Our belief in widening access to this great school has been embraced by our wonderful community: our current pupils and parents, Old Bristolians and their families, current and former staff, and our many friends,
who share our vision to transform lives through education.
Thanks to this collective belief and support, the first year of our 500 Campaign has seen over 420 donors contribute to raising over £1 million. That is a phenomenal achievement, and my deepest thanks goes to all who have donated money or contributed in other ways. Whilst it is right, of course, that we share our financial progress, what is much more important (and interesting!) is that we share the stories – of our bursary recipients, of their families, of our donors and of our school – so that the amazing impact of the generous donations we have received comes off the page.
Every donation is changing lives and we could not be more grateful. Thank you.
Jaideep Barot Headmaster
... to the collective belief and support of our BGS Community, we have raised over £1million in the first year of our 500 Campaign.
Giving is not just about donating
financially, it’s also - and just as importantly - about offering time, friendship and expertise. We are one of the great ancient schools in the country, because of our cherished community of Old Bristolians, parents and friends.
We continue to work in proud partnership with the Old Bristolians’ Society, teachers, parents and friends of the school. Our alumni number some of the most acclaimed professionals in their field throughout the world.
Our aim is to strengthen this network to provide a service for life, offering advice and support for aspiring students both in school and after leaving BGS. We regularly host lectures, mentoring and careers workshops with the aim of engaging more of our current students and recent leavers in professional networking events, held both in London and Bristol. Our traditional
Annual Dinner continues to grow, welcoming old friends and new.
To find out about volunteering, for help with organising a reunion or to attend an event, please get in touch; we’d love to hear from you.
Many people - parents, pupils, teachers, former pupils, charitable donors - have worked together, over centuries, to create a school which has interacted with and contributed to the life of Bristol, Britain and indeed, the world, in very diverse spheres. The nature of the place always changes, but the pride remains.”
Professor Keith Robbins, OB 1949-58, author “Pride of Place” A Modern History of Bristol Grammar School
Our 500 Campaign was created in 2021. Since Michael Booker, a much loved and respected Classics Teacher, began the journey to widen access, we have continued to raise funds to support children with talent and ambition through meanstested bursaries. This is just the beginning.
Our message is resonating with those who share our concern that not enough bright and able children are able to access a BGS education, due to financial circumstances and social backgrounds. With recent global events affecting us all, the dream of an outstanding education and the hope of a
better future for children is increasingly out of reach. However, after the first successful year of our Campaign, we raised funds needed to support many children, including the equivalent of fourteen fully funded places at Sixth Form starting next year.
Thanks to many of our parents who donated, we were also able to support families struggling due to the pandemic and we are working in partnership with the local council to provide support and an education at BGS for those affected by war through our Refugee Programme. There are currently four Ukrainian children studying at BGS.
We proudly support around 10% of the senior school with means tested bursaries. Our aim is to reach 25%, (one in four children) with at least a 50% philanthropically funded bursary by 2032.
We launched our first “Giving Day” in April 2022. The whole school got involved and for 36 hours, we created online video content and encouraged as many as possible to donate.
Thanks to some generous matched funding, a total of over £190,000 was raised from 250 donors including 100 parents. Raising funds together was great fun and helped us to share our Mission not only with our wider OB community, but especially with our students and their families.
We are grateful for the continued and generous support of our established trusts which have for many years, supported
children at BGS. These include the John James Foundation, The Bill Brown Charitable Trust, the Denman Foundation and the Pople Charitable Trust.
While we are humbled and incredibly grateful to our most generous donors - including those who are now sponsoring Sixth Form students - every single donation we receive, whatever the size of gift, is used to change lives through bursaries at BGS.
This year, with the support of over 420 people, we have raised over £1million in philanthropic funding in the first year of our 500 Campaign.
On behalf of all the children who have been and will be supported,
Bill Godwin donated £250,000 to support children at BGS through bursaries. Though never attending BGS himself, he gave back to the school where his father was a boy during the Second World War.
“My father, H J (Jim) Godwin joined Bristol Grammar School in 1930 at the age of eight. He had a lifelong affection for the school with many fond memories of his time at BGS: of playing fives, working in the library, and fire watching during the Bristol blitz. He made several lifelong friendships not just amongst his contemporaries
but also with members of staff. When his family fell on hard times, he was able to benefit from a scholarship which set him on course for the rest of his life and that is why I have chosen to endow a bursary in his memory to benefit future students in a similar way.”
I have a fundamental belief in the power of bursaries, to transform lives - not just for the direct recipients, but for their children and their children’s children.”

He always valued his experience at Bristol Grammar School and through his son, William Godwin, his memory will be cherished by children for generations to come.
OB, 2021
Former bursary award holder, now studying medicine at Bristol University
When I first joined BGS, I didn’t think any part of me could have predicted the kind of experiences and opportunities I would get to have here. I remember feeling gratitude to be in the school but also feeling really at home and part of a bigger BGS family.
I have so many fond memories particularly in the friendships I made and the relationships I built. I always felt so supported and uplifted it was a genuine joy to be at BGS. Whether it was acting on stage, travelling abroad, even in
an academic sense, no opportunity was ever too out of reach. No door was ever closed and I could do or be anything that I wanted to be.
The school gives so abundantly, opportunities that make me feel inspired to give so much as well; with anything that I am doing, especially in my medical career. It’s like the passing of a torch. BGS shapes and supports you so that one day, you can contribute to others in your own way.”

Coming to BGS has opened up a lot of doors that wouldn’t have been there for me. It has taught me to take advantage of the opportunities that are there and not to pass them by.”
At Sixth Form, I chose the International Baccalaureate over A levels to broaden my options. It’s busy but rewarding. I study Art, English and Biology at higher level and History, Spanish and Maths at standard level. Beyond BGS I am looking to study anthropology with a law conversion potentially.
It is so important that more children from less privileged backgrounds should have a level playing field and experience opportunities, as I have. It’s beneficial for the student but also, for the school as it creates a more inclusive community. Children with bursaries really strive because they know what it’s worth and don’t take it for granted; it’s good for the whole community.”
OB 2021
My experience of BGS was an overwhelmingly friendly and compassionate one. I found myself actively encouraged to take part in everything that was on offer. I am grateful and humbled to have been able to represent my school as a Deputy Head of School and Drama Scholar. I do hope, that as I now settle into my first term at Oxford, I am able to continue to represent the BGS family name with openness and authenticity.”
“Growing up in Bristol, it was my daughter’s ambition to attend BGS sixth form. She remained focussed, worked hard at school and committed to her extracurricular activities, demonstrating her naturally positive character, curiosity and enjoyment of life. Following interviews with teachers in her chosen subjects to join BGS sixth form, we were told that BGS would like to invite her to join the school and that we would receive support from a donor to make this possible. This support has allowed my daughter to fulfil her ambition and she has fully seized the opportunity.
Since starting in the lower sixth, she has become a scholar and prefect, received high grades in all her subjects, enhanced by several inspirational trips around the UK, and has been given a lead role in the BGS theatre production. She has regularly led classes for younger students and represented the school at open days. These achievements are made possible by the BGS community into which she has been welcomed so warmly. The respect and positive relationships between pupils and the exceptional staff is extremely productive and thoroughly inspiring and this is the true
value of the opportunity my daughter has been given. The values of kindness, integrity and rigour are pursued as real experiences and evident in every aspect of the school, enriching the lives of all pupils and preparing them in the most holistic and fundamental ways to explore life prepared and full of confidence.
I will remain incredibly grateful to our donor that my daughter has been recognised and presented with this experience, the positive influence of which will enhance the rest of her life.”

If you’re questioning whether you should give back, I’d say, just ask yourself about how you feel about your own experience at BGS and whether you can give that to someone else. Giving back means you’re doing something good, no matter how little or what you do to help it’s going to have an impact and you’ll feel great about it!”
Downer, bursary award holder, Head of SchoolLeading the 500 Campaign are donors who sponsor individuals, particularly at Sixth Form level. This is an opportunity to support young people with talent and determination, who understand that philanthropy is an important part of school culture.
Donors can choose to give small regular gifts to support all children at BGS in need of a bursary. Though any size of donation is appreciated, we welcome £15.32 as a starting point.
After a year of fundraising and our first £1million raised, we hosted what will become our annual Donors’ Lunch in the Great Hall this year. We welcomed over 100 OBs, parents, staff and friends together with Sixth Form students and musicians.
This is the first time we have celebrated philanthropy and friendship at BGS in this way and the guest list included people who had collectively donated over £4million to BGS over the years.
Joining our Donor Community, means that you become part of the wider BGS family, creating life-changing impact for children at BGS.
