INCREDIBLE WATERFALLS NEAR BRISBANE

There is something really special about chasing waterfalls. The cool spray on your face, the sound of rushing water, and the sense of discovery when you stumble across a hidden pocket of rainforest. The best part is that you don’t have to go far from Brisbane to find some truly beautiful waterfalls. Whether you want a gentle walk with the kids, a swimming hole to splash in, or a lookout that makes you stop and take it in, South-East Queensland has plenty to choose from.

Purling Brook Falls

EASY WATERFALL WALKS FOR KIDS

Curtis Falls – Tamborine Mountain

The short 1.5km return trail to Curtis Falls is just the right size for little legs. The return path winds downhill through rainforest and leads to Curtis Falls at the base. Along the way you might spot turtles or fish in the pools, or, if you are lucky, maybe even a platypus. There are stairs, but the track is still an easy one.

Buderim Falls (Serenity Falls) – Buderim

Buderim Falls, also known as Serenity Falls, can be reached from either Quorn Close or Harry’s Lane. A boardwalk makes the Harry’s Lane entry accessible, while the Quorn Close track takes you through forest. The timber bridge in front of the falls is a favourite photo spot. Swimming is not recommended, but it is a shady walk and includes picnic areas at either entrance.

Cougal Cascades – Currumbin Valley

The sealed path to Cougal Cascades in Springbrook National Park is pram-friendly and follows the creek past small cascades and rock pools. At the end of the track you will find the remains of an old sawmill. It is a flat and easy walk that is good for younger kids. Parking is limited, so arrive early.

Cougal Cascades
Cedar Creek Rock Pools

SWIMMING AND PADDLING SPOTS

Cedar Creek Falls – Tamborine Mountain

Only 700m from the car park, the Cedar Creek rock pools are one of the Gold Coast’s most popular spots to cool off. The water flows down through a series of cascades, forming swimming holes at different levels. It does get busy on weekends and parking is limited, so try to arrive early.

Kondalilla Falls – Montville

The walk to Kondalilla Falls takes you through the rainforest to a swimming hole at the top of the falls. The full circuit is 4.7km, with lots of stairs, so it is best suited to families with older kids. The climb back up is a workout, but the dip is worth it. Bring swimmers, towels, and plenty of water. Please note: Swimming is common here, but conditions vary, so take care, and review the National Parks website for updates (link below).

Cougal Cascades (lower pools) – Currumbin Valley

Some of the pools along the Cougal Cascades track are shallow enough for a quick splash in summer. Always check conditions first and supervise children closely, as rocks can be slippery and currents can change after rain.

Gardners Falls – Maleny

Just a short stroll along Obi Obi Creek, Gardners Falls offers shallow pools perfect for paddling, along with a deeper swimming hole near the main falls. Families love combining a splash here with a picnic, or heading into Maleny afterwards for a treat. Council doesn’t actively encourage swimming or jumping at the falls due to safety concerns (though it is not prohibited).

LOOKOUTS

Purling Brook Falls – Springbrook

Purling Brook Falls has a 100m drop and a 4km circuit walk that takes you through rainforest with views from several points. The track has steep sections, so it is best for older kids who are up for the challenge.

Morans Falls – Canungra

A 4.4km return trail through World Heritage rainforest leads you to views of the valley and Morans Falls. The walk has only a few stairs and is fairly gentle. After heavy rain the falls are stronger, but even in dry weather the views are good.

Kondalilla Falls

HIDDEN GEMS CLOSE TO BRISBANE

Greenes

Falls – Mt Glorious

Starting at Maiala Picnic Ground, this shady walk passes rock pools before ending at a lookout above the falls. It is quieter and less impressive than some of the bigger falls, but is still a beautiful walk through tropical rainforest. Birdwatchers will enjoy it here too.

JC Slaughter Falls – Mt Coot-tha

JC Slaughter Falls only run after rain, but the area has several bushwalks including a track to the Mt Coot-tha summit. It is close to the city, and the reward at the top is an ice cream with a view.

Simpson Falls – Mt Coot-tha

Also at Mt Coot-tha, the walk to Simpson Falls starts from a picnic area and winds into the forest. You will often see plenty of birdlife along the way. Like JC Slaughter Falls, the falls are best after rain, but the walk itself is a nice escape from the city.

TIPS FOR CHASING WATERFALLS

• Check the Queensland Government Parks & Forests website for updates before you head off.

• Reception can be patchy in the bush, so download or print maps ahead of time.

•Pack hats, sunscreen, insect repellent, plenty of snacks, and a small first aid kit.

• Bring swimmers and spare clothes for the kids. Even if you are not planning to swim, they may end up wet.

Waterfalls flow best after rain and may not be flowing at all if there has not been recent rain.

DAISY HILL KOALA CENTRE

Daisy Hill Conservation Park is home to the Daisy Hill Koala Centre; a free place to learn about one of Australia’s most recognised animals. Families can explore interactive displays and see resident koalas up close here; making it a worthwhile day out, especially for younger kids.

THE KOALAS

The centre is home to several resident koalas who have all been cared for after illness or injury, which means they cannot return to the wild.

Two levels of walkways provide close views of the koalas, usually resting in the branches or eating gum leaves. Signs along the paths introduce each animal by name and story.

Wildlife Officers feed fresh leaves to the koalas daily at 1:30pm.

EDUCATION AND PLAY

The Daisy Hill Koala Centre features displays designed for children, covering the koala life cycle, koala biology, and conservation issues in South East Queensland. A play area set up as a koala hospital lets kids practise what they’ve learned with toy koalas.

Wildlife Officer talks take place daily at 11am and 2pm.

WALKING, PICNICS, AND ACCESSIBILITY

The Daisy Hill Conservation Park covers 435 hectares of eucalypt forest with picnic tables, wood and electric barbecues, and toilet facilities including accessible options. There are no cafés on site, so bring your own food and drinks.

Close to the centre are some short walks, including a 450-metre accessible track through Melaleuca Wetland and an 800-metre track through open eucalypt forest. The park also has shared trails for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders. A 790-metre disability-friendly path and accessible barbecue were the first of their kind in a Queensland national park.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Location: 25km south of Brisbane on Daisy Hill Road, Daisy Hill. Carpark on site.

Opening hours: 10am to 4pm daily (closed Christmas Day, Good Friday, and New Year’s Day). The theatre closes at 3:15pm daily.

Admission: Free. Group bookings can be made online or by calling (07) 3299 1032.

Accessibility: The viewing tower may close after rain. Walkways and ramps are accessible for prams and wheelchairs.
