PICK YOUR OWN STR AWBERRIES One of our favourite activities to do with kids in winter is to take them strawberry picking. It doesn’t matter how old they are, or even if they don’t like strawberries, because everyone loves strawberry picking! Entry to the fields is free, and you will pay per kilo at the end of the pick.

WHEN TO GO The main strawberry picking season in Brisbane is between May and October. Always check out your local farms for strawberry season dates and open times. Most strawberry fields in Queensland have a Facebook page, which will advise of opening times and if there are any potential issues caused by weather.

OSPREY HOUSE ENVIRONMENT CENTRE

We love showcasing environment centres at Brisbane Kids, and the follow-on rewards for visitors to these centres are endless. Prepare for a morning or afternoon of education at Osprey House Environment Centre, and, if you are lucky, you might even catch sight of the resident ospreys!

A CONSERVATION CENTRE FOR KIDS Interactive and interesting, the inside of Osprey House is designed with little humans in mind. Pictures of local wildlife adorn the walls, and there is an activity corner for younger kids to colour in familiar native animals. A touch and feel table offers up the chance to explore the textures of nature, including snake skins, gumnuts, plants, feathers, fossils, and shells.

16

www.brisbanekids.com.au

OSPREY HOUSE ENVIRONMENT CENTRE

THE NESTING OSPREY A live camera feed within the centre captures the incredible resident nesting osprey. “Hope” and “George” are in preparation for mating season, and it is truly amazing to watch them prepare the nest.

WALKS AND PICNICS

Osprey House is located in Griffin. It is open every day from 10am to 4pm. The boardwalks, BBQs and picnic tables are accessible anytime. Learning Idea: Give your kids your phone and let them take a photo to record what they see so they can retell their adventure to family members. Tip: Pack mosquito spray and binoculars for bird-watching.

Whether you want to take a walk along the Mangrove boardwalk, or bring a picnic to enjoy at the picnic tables, this respite away from technology presents the perfect opportunity to reflect on why there is even a need for a conservation centre at all. Perhaps it could also be a good chance to talk with the kids about ideas on how your household could recycle more, or conserve more water, or help to protect animals ... really, the list goes on! Either way, raising wildlife warriors is a job to be proud of!
