If you’re looking for a day out with the kids close to Brisbane, Walkabout Creek is a top pick. Located only about 12 km from the city, this reserve sits on the edge of D’Aguilar National Park and features nature experiences, wildlife, and water sports all in one place.
If you’ve got toddlers or very young children in tow, head straight for the gentle, paved Waterside Track at Walkabout Creek. It leads from the Discovery Centre down to the water’s edge of Enoggera Reservoir and is ideal for little legs. For older kids (primary school aged and above) wanting more of a nature adventure, try the Araucaria Track. It’s roughly 5 km long and takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours to complete. The trail hugs the reservoir shoreline and loops through a giant hoop-pine forest.
There are also opportunities to explore the reservoir on a mountain bike, which you can plan using this map
Enoggera Reservoir is a beautiful spot for families who want simple, low-stress water play in a natural setting. Entry is free and the swimming area stays calm along the edges, which is great for younger kids who prefer to splash and explore close to shore. Older kids can try something new with kayak and stand up paddleboard rentals available onsite (for a fee) from Walkabout Creek Adventures, with all the safety gear provided.
There are no lifeguards, so parents need to stay switched on, but the mix of still water, shaded banks and plenty of space makes it an easy way to unwind after a bushwalk or just as an activity all on its own.

At the heart of the site is the Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre, where you’ll encounter local fauna, from reptiles to wombats to wallabies. Weekend ranger talks and feeding sessions add extra engagement for kids (Saturdays and Sundays at 11am). You can find the pricing for both experiences here
There’s a carpark at the Discovery Centre, making access straightforward by car. And, when you need a break, the café overlooking the trees and reservoir is a great spot for coffee, light meals, or a snack. Of course, you can save money and just bring your own food and a picnic blanket and make the most of the natural space.

Aside from the Wildlife Discovery Centre, there are numerous opportunities for spotting Australian wildlife. These include freshwater turtles, forest kingfishers, koalas (if you are really lucky), snakes, lizards, bush turkeys, and a great variety of Australian insects, including butterflies.
Arrive early on weekends — the car park fills quickly. Bring swimmers if you’re planning a splash in the reservoir. Leave pets at home, as dogs aren’t permitted in the wildlife and walking areas.

If you want to impress your visitors, have a date night, or just get a different perspective of beautiful Brisbane, then may we suggest visiting the Sky Deck at Queen’s Wharf Brisbane?
Opened to the public in August 2024 as part of the $3.6 billion Queen’s Wharf development, the Sky Deck is fast becoming a ‘must see’ attraction in Brisbane.
Aside from panoramic views and delicious dining options, perhaps the most notable feature of the attraction is the glass-floored viewing deck. And what makes it even better – visiting the Sky Deck is FREE!
Elevate your viewing experience from the Sky Deck by stepping onto the glass-floored viewing deck. If you’re brave enough, you’ll be treated to views straight down to the Riverside Expressway, the Isoletto Pool Club and The Landing.

Towering 100m above the city, the views from the Sky Deck are spectacular at any time of the year. When the skies are blue, the views are particularly stunning and, as the sun sets, a magnificent glow is cast over Brisbane, which makes for a brilliant viewing experience.
From the Sky Deck you will be able to see:
• Brisbane River
• South Bank (including Streets Beach and The Wheel of Brisbane)
• Kangaroo Point Cliffs
• Mt Coot-Tha
• Brisbane city skyline
• Many bridges (including a glimpse of the Story Bridge)
If the spectacular views are making you hungry, there are several dining options available on the 23rd floor; from the casual Babblers, where you can grab a coffee and a quick bite to eat, to Cicada Blu for drinks and cocktails, and Aloria for a more formal dining experience. If things are a little busy up there, head back down to Level 4 for many more delicious dining options.
The Sky Deck stands proudly on the banks of the Brisbane River in the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane precinct, at 33 William Street.
Accessing the area is easy, with convenient public transport links and pedestrian access from South Bank (made possible via the Neville Bonner Bridge). Once you arrive at Queen’s Wharf, just follow the purple signs to the Sky Deck on the 23rd floor.
For more details read our recent review of the Sky Deck.
