CLANDULLA COTTAGES

Book a farm stay at Clandulla Cottages in the stunning Scenic Rim region and have some one-onone time with the very handsome Tofu The Pig. The farm is home to many animals, best experienced on one of their engaging Farm Tours.

Accommodation options at Clandulla Cottages vary depending on your family’s needs, with five selfcontained cottages to choose from.

WHERE: Clandulla Cottages, Boyland QLD

WHEN: Book to stay year ‘round, with Farm Tours available to staying guests.

GARDNERS FALLS

Head out for a bushwalk at Gardners Falls in Maleny and you might see a platypus in Obi Obi Creek! Not only is the area the perfect spot for a family walk, but recent platypus spottings have been plentiful in the area, so your chances of seeing one yourselves are high!

Free, self-guided bushwalks throughout the area will take you on an adventure past rockpools, running creeks and, of course, the falls.

WHERE: Obi Obi Creek, Maleny QLD

WHEN: August is platypus mating season, but late winter to early spring are generally popular times for seeing them in the wild.

NORTH STRADBROKE ISLAND

Take a day trip on the ferry over to North Stradbroke Island, and catch the bus to Point Lookout. From this vantage point in the winter months, you’ll be able to see the whales as they migrate along Australia’s east coast.

The ferry to North Stradbroke Island is priced from $19.50 for adults and $10.50 for kids, with the island bus service offering 50c fares (cash/EFTPOS only - no GO Cards).

WHERE: Point Lookout, North Stradbroke Island QLD

WHEN: Late May to early November (peaking July to September) is the best time to spot whales off the coast of North Stradbroke Island.

THE MAD HATTERS BOOKSHOP

Is there anything better than curling up with a good book in winter? We’d argue not. If you’re looking for the perfect excuse to find something new to read with your Brisbane Kids, The Mad Hatters Bookshop in Manly is exactly the kind of place that makes reading feel like an adventure before you’ve even turned a page!

This little independent bookshop has been a beloved part of the Manly community since 2015, and is genuinely one of those places that stops you in your tracks the moment you walk in. It’s as much a mini-wonderland as it is a bookshop; beautifully decorated and full of surprises for kids and grownups alike.

HOLIDAY EVENTS COMING UP

June/July school holiday events

The Fantasy Weekend on 27-28 June is a great place to start, with storytime, craft, mapmaking and even a toy archery competition across the two days. Several sessions are free, and a handful have a small cost attached.

Beyond the Fantasy Weekend, there’s a packed program running through July too — think author visits, creative craft workshops and more storytime sessions for younger kids. Something is on almost every week of the holidays.

Tip: Sessions book out fast and details can change — check The Mad Hatters Bookshop website or call 0431 615 787 for the latest timetable and to grab your spot.

WHAT TO EXPECT

• A strong focus on children’s books, with plenty of titles for every age

• Toys, cards and bookish gifts alongside the books

• A fantasy-themed room stocked with role-playing and pop culture products

• Book clubs for kids and adults, plus school holiday events and activities (details below)

It’s also a wonderful spot to find a gift that isn’t a toy, where staff genuinely know their stock and are happy to help you find the right read.

THE OWLERY CAFÉ

As much a destination as a café, The Owlery Café is a Harry Potter-themed café inside a repurposed church in Samford. With high ceilings, stained glass, chandeliers, and owls in every corner, it sits right next to the Store of Requirement, making it one of the best little day trips on the north side.

INSIDE THE OWLERY CAFÉ

A former church with verandah seating, moody indoor rooms, and an old-world atmosphere that feels genuinely special, the building does a lot of the work in setting the atmosphere here.

The ordering area is beautifully styled, doubling as a little retail space with owl-themed mugs, preserves, and accessories. Find your seat first, then head up to order.

• Ramps available for prams and wheelchairs

• Seating for small and large groups, indoors and out

• 30 minutes from Brisbane CBD

ON THE MENU

The menu at The Owlery Café is seasonal and more extensive than you’d expect. Think comfort food with a wizarding twist. Some dishes go by straightforward names, others by very whimsical ones -

• Sirius Steak Sanga

• Slug Club Pain Perdu

• Scones, jaffles, bacon and eggs

• Chocolate frogs and cake

• Elixir of Life - their own coffee blend

• Tea, milkshakes, and more

GOOD TO KNOW

• Open Wednesday to Friday, 8am-2pm and Saturday to Sunday, 7am-3pm

• Bookings required for larger groups (phone 0414 909 502)

• Street parking on Station Street and Main Street. Pack patience on weekends.

• It gets busy and food can take a little longer at peak times, but it’s worth the wait

MAKE A DAY OF IT IN SAMFORD

John Scott Park is located directly opposite, with a train-themed shady playground featuring swings, a fort, slides, and a BMX track.

Next door, The Store of Requirement is a must for any Harry Potter fan. Enjoy the sorting hat experience, browse loads of merch, and take part in holiday workshops including Potions Classes and Wand Making.

The Fairy Shed inside the Samford Valley Garden Centre is worth a look, and Mount Glorious is only 30 minutes away for one of our favourite rainforest walks.

THE VERDICT

The world needs more whimsy, and The Owlery Café has it in abundance. It’s a brilliant spot for a special morning out, but just go in knowing it’s popular and bring your patience during weekends and school holidays.

GEOCACHING IN BRISBANE

The free family treasure hunt hiding in plain sight. Think treasure hunting is just for pirates and storybooks? Hidden across Brisbane in parks, along riverbanks, tucked behind heritage buildings, and buried in bushland are thousands of small containers waiting to be found. Welcome to geocaching (say it: JEE-oh-kash-ing).

WHAT IS GEOCACHING?

Geocaching is a real-world treasure hunt where you use a smartphone or GPS device to track down hidden containers called caches. Each one is placed by a fellow geocacher and listed online with coordinates, clues, and a difficulty rating. Find one, sign the logbook inside, swap a small treasure if you like, then log your find online. That’s it. Simple, fun, and genuinely addictive (not to mention free!).

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

The barrier to entry is refreshingly low.

THE BASICS

• A smartphone with the free Geocaching app (iOS and Android)

• Location services switched on

• A pen to sign the logbook

NICE TO BRING

• Geoswag - small items to swap when you find treasure. Think foreign coins, keyrings, painted rocks or small toys. Keep them pocket-sized and waterproof

• A small torch - some caches hide in shadowy spots

• Tweezers - helpful for tiny rolled log sheets in nano caches

Tip: The free app gives you access to thousands of caches straight away. The paid version unlocks offline maps and additional caches - worth it once you’re hooked.

YOUR FIRST FIND

1. Download the Geocaching app and create a free account

2. Open the map and find a cache nearby - aim for a difficulty rating of 1 or 2 to start

3. Check recent logs to confirm it’s been found lately

4. Head to the location and use the app’s compass to guide you

5. Search carefully - caches are designed to blend in!

6. Sign the logbook, swap a treasure, and replace everything exactly as you found it

7. Log your find in the app

Tip: Don’t skip the hint button. Caches can shift over time due to weather, animals and general wear. It’s there to help.

GREAT SPOTS TO TRY IN BRISBANE

Brisbane is absolutely packed with caches and that’s just on the free maps. Upgrade to a premium account and even more open up. Here are some great spots to get you started -

Mount Coot-tha Reserve, Toowong

You will find plenty of caches along the walking tracks.

Terrain: Easy to moderate

Froggy Creek Community Street Library, Karana Downs

A good beginning cache in addition to a street library - bring a book and swap it!

Terrain: Flat and paved - pram friendly

Moggill Creek Catchment, Kenmore

The Moggill Cemetery series is a great introduction for first-timers.

Terrain: Flat tracks and gentle slopes

Nudgee Beach Area

There are a couple of caches at this location. Visit on low tide and bring the family pooch so they can enjoy the dog beach.

Terrain: Flat

Brisbane CBD

A surprising number of caches are dotted around the city. You could combine this with a visit to places like the Botanic Gardens, Roma Street Parkland, and Museum of Brisbane.

Terrain: Flat

TRACKABLESTHE TRAVELLING TREASURES

Inside some caches you might find a trackable - a tagged item with a unique code and a mission, maybe to visit every state or reach a specific place. Log the code online, move it to another cache, and watch it journey onward. Kids love it.

A FEW GOLDEN RULES

• Always put the cache back exactly where and how you found it

• Be discreet when searching - non-geocachers are called muggles for good reason

• Only take from a cache if you leave something of equal or greater value

• Log your finds so cache owners know everything is in good shape

• Respect the environment and stick to tracks

JOIN THE COMMUNITY

Brisbane has a warm geocaching community. The Geocaching Brisbane Facebook group welcomes everyone from curious beginners to seasoned cache hunters. You’ll find advice, local event news and plenty of inspiration for new spots to explore.

SOMERSET: YOUR FAMILY’S GREAT ESCAPE

Just an hour from Brisbane, Somerset has wide open spaces, quiet country roads and the kind of adventures that don’t need a screen.

Whether you’re after a lazy weekend away or some time off devices, Somerset delivers. Think lakes, llamas, a legendary rail trail, and a cinema straight out of another era. It’s a slow adventure done right and your kids will absolutely love it.

Lake Somerset

WHERE TO STAY

Esk Caravan Park

A brilliant base for families. There’s an onsite pool (plus a separate adults-only pool for when the kids are worn out), a wood-fired pizza oven, playground, and a packed events calendar. Campsites, cabins and safari tents available – no caravan needed.

NRMA Lake Somerset Holiday Park

Right on the water’s edge. Bring your boat, pack the fishing rods, and settle in for days of swimming, water-skiing and tubing. A real winner for waterloving families.

Neurum Creek Bush Retreat

No WiFi, No problem. This sprawling property borders D’Aguilar National Park and swaps screens for creek swimming, bushwalking, canoeing and exploring on bikes. This is the kind of place your kids will talk about for years (and you can bring the dog too!).

Jimna

Base Camp

Pitch your tent on a former school oval in the tiny township of Jimna. It’s unpowered, unfussy and exactly what a bush camping trip should feel like. Two acres of open space with hot showers and flushing toilets.

THINGS TO DO

Ride the Rail Trail

The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail is Australia’s longest recreational rail trail at 161km. It’s flat, scenic and completely family-friendly. Ride, walk or horseride through Somerset’s gorgeous countryside, crossing old timber trestle bridges along the way. Don’t miss the Yimbun Tunnel – a heritage-listed tunnel hand-carved through solid rock back in 1910. Seriously cool.

Tip: You don’t need to do the whole trail! Pick a short stretch near Esk for a brilliant few hours out.

Toogoolawah Pictures

A proper old-school country cinema with canvas sling-back seats, fresh popcorn, hot dogs and modern digital projection. It’s about 15 minutes from Esk and worth every minute of the drive. This is a genuinely memorable night out for the whole family.

Paddle Power

Somerset is a water sports paradise. Pack the canoe and paddle the lakes, or tackle the Brisbane Valley Canoe Trail – a self-guided route along the Upper Brisbane River, complete with some shallow rapids for a little extra excitement.

Tip: The canoe trail suits older kids and confident paddlers. The lakes are perfect for littler ones.

Llamas and Lattes

Walk a llama along a shady creek bed in Esk with Ottaba Llamas. These gentle giants are easy to lead and kids can pat them along the way – just don’t stop too long or they’ll have their heads in the nearest grass patch.

Tip: Bookings are essential and kids under 8 need a supervising adult.

Celebrate 10 years of the Esk Garden Fair on Saturday 20 June at Pipeliner Park with 100+ stalls, specialist nurseries, live music and food courts. Entry is $5 (under 16s free), gates open at 8am, and dogs are welcome too!
