Chairman’s Message Howard Stack In 2018, the Brisbane Grammar School community was brought closer together through a number of celebratory events to mark the School’s sesquicentenary. The tangible contributions that are made to the School by the P&F Auxiliary, Old Boys, parents, volunteers and donors are evident in this 2018 Impact Report.

Our donors are to be applauded for their generous support of Campaign 2020. Our goal is to raise $20 million by 2020, to enable boys in financial need to attend the School. With a total of $14.5M raised and $5.5M to go, we now move into the final phase of the campaign — Our 2020 Vision.

We are close to achieving a sustainable endowment fund, with the capacity to provide needs-based bursarial support for 10% of the student population: 170 boys.

I am delighted to announce that in 2018 the School achieved another important milestone. Bursarial assistance was offered to 44 boys without having to draw on either the School’s operational budget, or the fund capital. A report detailing our investment with the Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC) can be found on pages 30 and 31. We acknowledge with gratitude those donors, named on pages 32 and 33, who have supported the Bursary Fund since the beginning of 2017.

The entire community has supported this endeavour, with voluntary contributions from parents and the Old Boy community. In my final term as Chairman of the Board, I have striven to embed the Year Group Bursary program into the DNA of the School. We are making progress, with initial funds created by the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Year Groups, to as far back as the 1942 Year Group. Pleasingly, a number of parents are also beginning to support this philanthropic objective.

We extend our thanks to the P&F Auxiliary for their generous support, contributing $500,000 towards Northgate improvements, ongoing support for the P&F Bursary, and their $250,000 donation towards the War Memorial Library Gardens.

The Old Boys’ Association secured a major grant and attracted donations from 60 Old Boys to refurbish the War Memorial Library.

These improvements were unveiled at a special Remembrance Day ceremony to acknowledge the centenary of the Armistice.

In addition, the design and planning process for the School’s transformative STEAM precinct continues. Further investment by the community in a facility that will integrate the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics supports the School’s strategic vision, and ensures BGS continues to fulfil its educational mission.

An architect’s impression of this 21st-century facility appears on pages 28 and 29. The Board hopes this visionary project will inspire the BGS community to contribute towards a project which will ensure that our teaching and learning in these core subjects is world class.

Headmaster’s Message Anthony Micallef Over the past 25 years I have witnessed how parents, Old Boys and donors have contributed financial, human and social capital to this school, and the enduring impact this has had on the community’s wellbeing. Our school prospers from the connections we make as we bond over shared values and endeavours.

In 2018, BGS was once again privileged to have dedicated volunteers who spent thousands of hours supporting the School’s ethos.

Whether in the Grammar Shop or the Tuckshop; running support groups or representing year-groups; supporting our Boarding, Outdoor Education, Leadership and Public Purpose programs; or coordinating major events such as Open Day, Grammar in Concert, Art Show, Spring Luncheon and Valedictory Dinner, BGS volunteers contributed to the School’s 150-year history of volunteering and philanthropy.

This investment of time, treasure and talent builds a sense of community at BGS, which has real benefits for students, parents and donors. For example, the role parents play in volunteering provides students with a strong awareness of cooperative spirit. In turn those students are likely to act ethically and altruistically, developing their social and emotional skills.

For this reason, I offer the School’s gratitude to all the volunteers who made an impact in 2018. Your commitment to the School creates an important legacy. Aside from the immediate benefits of organising sporting events, managing catering, selling tickets, making meals in the Tuckshop and fitting hats and uniforms, volunteer hours give our students something very special — an example of selflessness and community involvement. Turn to page 12 and 13 for the story of Old Boy Geoff Clarke ’64 and his wife Shirley who provide a shining example.

Finally, I would also like to acknowledge the community’s outstanding financial support in 2018, with the School receiving more than $2 million from over 300 donors. These funds go to various infrastructure projects and to bursaries for students in financial need, such as Old Boy Raziq Qasimi ’14, featured on pages 22 and 23.

With my sincere gratitude to each and every volunteer and donor, your contributions to the School do make a difference.

Celebrating our volunteers Brisbane Grammar School is indebted to its community of parents, donors and Old Boys for contributing their time, treasure and talent.

In 2018, Brisbane Grammar School’s Parents and Friends Association (P&F) and members of the Old Boys’ Association (BGSOBA) had a significant impact, creating a rewarding experience for students, families and Old Boys.

Volunteers make a vital contribution to the School

In addition to gaining satisfaction from making a difference in our community, volunteers create friendships in a social, collegial atmosphere.

Volunteers often reflect on the lifelong connections forged over their sons’ interests, with the material contributions made to the School a fortunate by-product.

Parents wanting to enhance their BGS journey are offered a wealth of opportunities to get involved.

The P&F incorporates several parent groups that support a range of co-curricular sports and activities. A subgroup of the P&F Association, the P&F Auxiliary, runs the Tuckshop and Grammar Shop. In 2018, these two businesses were supported by over 300 active volunteers.

Boys benefit directly from the work of these parent volunteers. The strong performance of the Tuckshop and Grammar Shop allowed the P&F Auxiliary to donate $500,000 to the redevelopment of the School’s Northgate facilities

and $250,000 to the War Memorial Library Gardens. The Auxiliary also continued to support the Bursary Fund, having pledged $500,000 over five years in 2017.

Several parent volunteers involved in the P&F are also active members of the BGSOBA, and in 2018, the two groups forged closer ties.

On Remembrance Day, 11 November 2018, Old Boys from across the generations and the wider school community met for a poignant reunion to mark 100 years since the Armistice. Held outside the newly refurbished War Memorial Library, a special ceremony marked the service and sacrifice of former BGS students and staff who served in World War I. Thanks go to the P&F Auxiliary and the BGSOBA for contributing $286,940 to the War Memorial precinct’s restoration. Thanks also to the Queensland Anzac Centenary Grants Program, which granted $74,000 towards the restoration and internal fit-out.

Our 2018 sesquicentenary celebrations marked 150 years since the School was founded, and symbolised the ongoing connection between the School and so many BGS families, regardless of their stage on the BGS journey.

Betty Howell Awards The Betty Howell Awards are presented by the Board of Trustees to recognise volunteers who exemplify selfless service and contribution to the School.

In 2018, BGS Trustee Mr Chris Morton ’73 presented the Betty Howell Awards.

Given our 150th anniversary, we ventured back through the School’s history and awarded a posthumous recognition to the first President of what was then called the Parents’ Committee, Mrs Barr-David.

The Betty Howell Award was also presented to Mrs Louise Edmonds, a past parent who volunteered in various capacities during her son’s BGS journey from 2007 to 2013.

Members of the BGS community are encouraged to consider nominating volunteers whose significant contributions should be acknowledged.

Celebrating 25 years as volunteers Each day in a hundred different ways, parents, Old Boys and other community volunteers are working to improve the educational experience for boys at BGS. Every rowing regatta, rugby match, Moogerah working bee, Open Day, music concert, Art Show, gala opening and ordinary day in the Tuckshop — just to name a few — involves countless hours of unpaid labour.

Many hands make light work, but some individuals choose to do the heavy lifting.

Old Boy and past parent Geoff Clarke ’64 and his wife Shirley are two such people, having volunteered hundreds of hours to school activities over the last 25 years. Though their son Scott graduated in 1999, Geoff and Shirley have three grandsons who will attend the School in the coming years, and their involvement in the BGS community has become a way of life.

Geoff says that like his Old Boy father, Morris ’39, he was always a Life Member of the BGS Old Boys’ Association (BGSOBA), but it was Scott who reignited his connection to the School. When Scott started rowing, Geoff and Shirley were at every regatta and lent their own competitive spirit to putting up the supporters’ marquee. ‘We used to race the parents from other schools to see who could put their tent up first. BGS always won,’ Shirley laughs.

Geoff has rowed in Masters regattas. His involvement with BGS Rugby also continued beyond Scott’s days at BGS. ‘Some of my mates’ sons were still at school so I would go along and help with the barbeque,’ Geoff says.

Today, Geoff gives his time to the BGSOBA and the Moogerah Support Group. He became OBA President in 2003 and served the maximum three years. Still on the committee, he’s a regular fixture at the dinner and mans the BGSOBA stall at School Open Days.

Through their family construction business, TC Clarke & Son, which this year celebrates 100 years, Geoff and Shirley have generously sponsored several School and BGSOBA events.

Geoff has also contributed his professional skills to improving the Outdoor Education program at Moogerah for several years.

‘I’m in the building game and I enjoy the hands-on of the working bees. I find out what’s needed for the weekend, load up all the gear on the back of the ute and out we go,’ Geoff says. ‘I’ve made good friends with the Outdoor Education staff. It’s a fun weekend.’

Shirley also has friends through volunteering. She was a Tuckshop Captain when Scott was at school, and 20 years later she and her fellow teammates still meet four times a year for breakfast, lunch or a Christmas function, where they raise money for a charity chosen by that year’s hostess. ‘I didn’t know anyone when I started,’ Shirley said. ‘But we were all new to Tuckshop, and we had a lot of fun.

You only get out what you put in to it.’

When asked why parents should get involved, Shirley’s answer is simple: ‘Someone did the same thing for my son,’ she says. ‘Before we arrived parents worked to raise funds and create a great culture. I want to pay it forward and see other children benefit.’

BGS is truly a family affair for the Clarkes, with daughter Melleah marrying Old Boy Brett Crunkhorn ’96 and the first of their three sons set to start at BGS in 2021. Brett and Melleah met after finishing school at the BGS Rowing Boatshed where they both worked as rowing coaches. Scott and his wife are expecting their first child in July, and Geoff says if the baby is a boy, he’ll be putting his name down the day after he’s born.

The BGS Board of Trustees recognised Geoff’s ‘selfless service’ to the School in 2011, when he was a recipient of the Betty Howell Award.

Despite the accolade, Geoff and Shirley’s involvement has never been about winning awards.

Geoff didn’t know he had a LinkedIn profile (he says his kids must have put him on social media) but it’s short, in capital letters and to the point: ‘HARD WORKING FAMILY MAN’.

The BGS community could add, ‘committed BGS Old Boy and all-round good bloke.’

Old Boys’ Association Connecting Our Community The Brisbane Grammar School Old Boys’ Association (BGSOBA) continued to strengthen the School community with a number of successful events in 2018.

From professional networking to serious socialising, Old Boys celebrated the School’s 150-year anniversary in 2018 with an Annual Reunion Dinner (ARD), now regarded as the best in living memory. The night’s theme, ‘Getting the Band Back Together’ had well-known Old Boy musicians entertaining the 180-strong crowd at the Queensland Cricketers’ Club. The success of this event was such that it prompted this year’s event, ‘Band Battle ’19 - The Jam’ where Old Boy bands competed for a recording session at Airlock Studio, owned by Old Boy Ian Haug ‘87 of Powderfinger fame.

Younger Old Boys benefited from the BGSOBA’s industry-specific professional networking events. In a practical show of support for new graduates, several established Old Boys shared their professional experience at three well-attended evenings.

At the Law event, three members of the legal fraternity presented to 71 attendees; the Medicine evening featured eight medical practitioners and was attended by 31 recent graduates; and a panel of five Old Boys working in Finance shared their wisdom with the 72 younger graduates in attendance.

The strong connections that Old Boys have forged with the School is evident in the number of Old Boys who have returned to work there. In 2018, 155 Old Boys were employed at BGS.

Honouring our fallen The centenary of the end of World War I and the 100-year commemoration of the Armistice were celebrated around the world, and prompted Brisbane Grammar School to embark on a fundraising campaign to restore the War Memorial Library (WML).

Today the iconic structure pays homage to the many Old Boys who defended Australia in various military campaigns. The building is architecturally unique and its preservation creates a distinctive place for students and Queenslanders to learn more about their heritage.

This building is one of the oldest and most significant WWI memorials in Queensland. In 1916 an appeal led by Second Master Stuart Stephenson and a committee of BGS Old Boys raised approximately £3000 to build a memorial to remember the 1022 Old Boys and teachers from the School who served and died in WWI. It is fitting that philanthropic funding raised by the BGSOBA covered the cost of renovating the building and environs nearly 100 years later.

The WML Campaign, championed by BGSOBA President Chris Austin ’79, received generous support from the P&F Association and attracted donations from 60 Old Boys. An additional $74,000 was granted through the Queensland Anzac Centenary Grants Program. All donors were invited to the 2018 Remembrance Day Ceremony.

The foundation stone was laid on Anzac Day 1923 and the heritage-listed Gothic Revival building officially opened on 11 November 1924. The Memorial contains irreplaceable stained glass windows representing victory and peace, and the virtues of justice, honour, courtesy, service, loyalty and truth.

A Little war hero Old Boy David Little ’60 has a strong family connection to Brisbane Grammar School that spans four generations and dates back to the early 1900s when his father and uncle attended the School.

David’s father William Arthur Little (1914), uncle Edwin Maurice Little (1910), son Andrew Little ’87 and now grandson Oliver Hudson ’25 have all walked through the BGS gates as students.

The Little family attended a special Remembrance Day Ceremony at the School to mark the centenary of the Armistice, 100 years after 11 November 1918. The School’s iconic Golden Book, on display in the War Memorial Library, was opened to the pages focusing on David’s father and uncle and their World War I service. A war hero, David’s uncle Maurice was severely injured at Quinn’s Post in Gallipoli in May 1915.

Official war records indicate that Maurice was throwing ‘jam tin’ bombs at the retreating Turkish enemy who had broken into and occupied the Australian front line at Quinn’s Post on 29 May 1915. For these crude bombs to be effective it was necessary to cut the fuse in half and hold them momentarily before throwing. While kneeling to throw one such bomb it exploded in Maurice’s hand causing multiple upper body injuries including the loss of both eyes and his right hand, which was amputated. A casualty list published in the press listed Maurice as killed in action.

In the historical account compiled by Charles Bean, he recounts the words of Major Durrant, commander of the 13th Battalion. Durrant witnessed the action and stated, ‘I saw him [Maurice] a couple of minutes afterwards, when he looked a pitiable sight, covered in blood, his right forearm a bleeding stump and his face cut to ribbons. He was quite conscious and said, ‘We have got them beaten alright!’ Such was the determination of the defenders of Quinn’s Post.

Following six months in hospital and life saving surgeries, Maurice returned to Australia by ship. He later became a guest speaker at rallies supporting the Federal Government’s conscription campaign.

It was perhaps inevitable that Maurice’s younger brother, and David’s father, William enlisted at age 20 in November 1917. William was assigned to the Light Horse Reinforcements which served in Palestine and was engaged at Es Salt, Amman, Jordan Valley.

Despite physical incapacities, Maurice refused to be pitied and went on to master braille and write widely. In 1923, the Queensland Book Depot published Maurice’s book, Sonnets and Other Verses. The preface was written by BGS Headmaster Bousfield and contained poems referencing WWI, including his well-known verse Nil Sine Labore extolling the virtues of Our Motto in the field of battle.

Maurice went on to become the Founding President of the Sherwood RSSILA, and stood for State Parliament to better the cause of returned servicemen. He later travelled to London and studied economics at Oxford.

Maurice died in London in 1938, aged 45.

Eighty years later, David proudly showed his uncle’s braille pocket watch with raised numerals — a gift to Maurice from the Queensland Government in recognition of his service in public life. David’s wife Marlene wore Maurice’s gold cufflinks and gold medallion to the 2018 Remembrance Day Ceremony in honour of her husband’s father and uncle. As supporters of the Memorial War Library upgrade, Marlene and David were guests along with other donors. A special memorial marked the first occasion the building was used following a major refurbishment to the building itself and the garden precinct surrounds.

A strong supporter of Campaign 2020, and champion of the 1960 Year Group Bursary, David — a former School Captain — is passionate about giving back to BGS and providing the chance for others to gain the same opportunities his family has benefitted from by attending the School.

Raziq Qasimi The Gift of Education From refugee to law student and speaker at an international human rights conference, Raziq Qasimi has continued his amazing journey since graduating from Brisbane Grammar School in 2014.

Qasimi attended BGS in Years 11 and 12 thanks to a bursary, and he’s been paying it forward ever since. Now in his final year studying a Bachelor of Justice/Bachelor of Laws (Honours) at QUT, Qasimi knows exactly what he wants to do when he graduates.

‘I consider myself a human rights activist and I do want to become a human rights lawyer. For me, human rights are all about small acts of kindness towards the most marginalised members of our society,’ Qasimi said. ‘It doesn’t have to be at UN or at an international level, though this is a dream.

‘Volunteering with your local human rights organisation is also contributing.’

His experience fleeing Afghanistan has inspired him to help others. While at BGS, Qasimi volunteered at the Homework Club, helping refugee children much like his younger self.

For the last three years he has been on the board of the Queensland Program of Assistance to Survivors of Torture and Trauma (QPASTT), and he says it’s a huge honour and privilege to contribute to the broader multicultural society of Brisbane.

‘My passion and desire will always be to assist the most disadvantaged members of our domestic and global society in any capacity that I can.’

‘As part of this conference, QPASTT invited about 600 students mainly from private and Catholic schools to attend the conference. We thought private schools do not get enough exposure to refugee issues and we thought this was a perfect chance to do that,’ Qasimi said.

‘The School Engagement Session and the whole conference went fantastically well and we received plenty of great feedback. I thought the session was informative and inspiring for young students.’

Drawing on his own experience, Qasimi also presented a paper to the main conference about issues faced by young refugees in Queensland.

Qasimi’s family is a member of the Hazara, an ethnic group native to central Afghanistan. It was Qasimi’s older brother who paved the way to a future in Australia, travelling here by boat in 1999.

He’s says he’s very proud to be the first AghaniAustralian refugee to have attended Brisbane Grammar School.

I met some wonderful and inspiring teachers at BGS. The education that you receive at BGS is certainly second to none.

Earlier this year, QPASTT hosted the second Australia and New Zealand Refugee Trauma Recovery in Resettlement Conference, and Qasimi saw the opportunity to educate and inform school students.

Norman Waraker Scholarship Bequest, a living legacy A family’s great sorrow at the loss of their son on the Western Front has grown into a positive living legacy at Brisbane Grammar School.

The Norman Waraker Memorial Cup is awarded each year to the School’s 400m champion and is named in honour of Old Boy Lieutenant Norman Waraker, who was killed in action near Ypres in 1917.

At BGS Norman was the 440 yards champion and played for the First XV and First XI. His mother Jesse first donated 50 pounds in 1918 to establish the Norman Waraker Prize in memory of her ‘gallant son’.

The prize later became the Memorial Cup, and the 440 yards became the 400m. Over the years Norman’s sister Doris Townsend continued to sponsor the Cup, sending an annual cheque from 1956 until her death in 1995.

As a BGGS student Doris was also athletic and a keen tennis player. She later became a theatre critic and poet. She wrote of her grief at Norman’s death in her poetry collection Songs of Sun and Shadow, published in 1928.

When Doris died she left a generous Bequest of $100,000 to be divided equally between BGS and BGGS. The BGS scholarship was to go to a promising student and champion athlete at his primary school, in honour of her brother Norman’s love of athletics.

BGS Old Boy Michael Hogan ’01 was the Norman Waraker Scholarship’s first recipient in 1997, 80 years after Norman’s tragic death.

Michael made the most of his opportunities at BGS, becoming School Captain in 2001. A member of the Open First VIII that won the Head of River that year, he was also a member of the Queensland Schoolboy Rowing team, the Senior A Debating team, and the Basketball First V. On Speech Day he was presented with the Otto Nothling Memorial Prize, the J M ‘Jack’ Kortlang Best Oarsman Award, the NS Robertson Cup, a General Merit, the Year 12 Ancient History and Ancient History Essay Prizes, and the John Deeney Short Story Prize.

Michael says he looks back on his school days ‘very fondly’ and being part of the crew that won the Head of River was a highlight.

‘We worked really hard to win the HoR. We weren’t the biggest or most talented crew, but we were the best team and great mates. I learnt so much from the experience and it remains amongst the best teams I’ve been associated with,’ Michael said.

‘I thought at the time, and I still believe, that the School is very good at giving students opportunities for meaningful and defining experiences. Rowing was definitely one of those moments.’

Michael continues to win accolades. Now General Counsel at Wormald Australia, he was named Association of Corporate Counsel 2017 Young Lawyer of the Year.

Recently back in Brisbane after many years working in Sydney, Michael and his wife Airlie have enrolled their son Lachie at BGS in 2028.

‘From my perspective as a past student and future parent, a strategic scholarship and bursary program is a key strength of the School — it helps to facilitate a diverse and talented school community. My decision to send Lachie to BGS is based in part on my confidence that his peer group will be drawn from a range of backgrounds, cultures and geographies. That has always been the case and I’m so pleased that it remains a priority.

‘All students benefit from the School’s wellmanaged bursary program.’

Michael certainly seized the opportunities provided by Brisbane Grammar School. His success can be credited, in part, to the gift Norman Waraker’s sister Doris Townsend made to the School to honour her brother.

BGS Funds Review BGS Deductible Gift Recipient Fund Review The School has three funds with Deductible Gift Recipient status: the Building Fund, the Bursary Fund and the Library Fund.

The Rules for Deductible Gift Recipient Funds (25 September 2018) and the BGS Bursary Fund Investment Strategy (6 December 2018) prescribe the governance obligations of the Finance Committee for funds held and invested in the School’s DGR Funds.

The objective of the BGS Bursary Fund is to generate sufficient earnings from its corpus base to fully fund needs-based bursaries, without eroding said corpus, or requiring financial subsidy from the operating cash flow of the School.

Investment Overview At 31 December 2018, the combined funds of the School’s DGR Funds were invested in the Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC) Growth Fund, ANZ Bank (for immediate-needs liquidity) and shares as follows:

QIC Growth Fund Performance QIC Growth Fund (‘Fund’) performance is summarised as follows: • Negative earnings of 2.26% for the year ended 31 December 2018; • Positive average earnings of 5.46% for the five years ended 31 December 2018; and • Positive average earnings of 8.50% for the ten years ended 31 December 2018.

The earnings of the Fund over the longer term are considered reasonable, and no change in strategy is presently contemplated. Negative earnings were characteristic of Australian managed funds in 2018, with falls in the Australian and international equities market, plus the weakening Australian dollar, contributing to contraction on many fronts.

We thank all Year Group Bursary donors listed on the following two pages for the opportunity they provide to students who would not otherwise be able to attend the School.

2017 & 2018 Year Group Bursary Fund Donors Donors to the Year Group Bursary (YGB) program include Old Boys who have supported their peer year and parents who have made voluntary contributions through school fees in 2017 and 2018. These tax deductible donations are allocated to the year group of the eldest son at the School (unless parents have indicated otherwise, for instance splitting donations between more than one son’s peer year). The year in which a student will graduate is their ‘peer year’.

Since the beginning of 2017, the full amount of all YGB donations have been invested in the BGS Bursary Fund, which operates as an endowment fund, with invested capital maintained in perpetuity.

Income generated by the capital investment is utilised in accordance with DGR guidelines and drawn upon to offer needs-based bursaries.

BGS150 Gala Dinner

BRISBANE GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Celebrating our Community Brisbane Grammar School celebrated its sesquicentenary by hosting a range of BGS150 events to engage with members of our community, including Old Boys, past boarders, previous and current parents, volunteers and donors.

Generous sponsorship from industry partnerships significantly offset costs associated with increased engagement. Through this support, which greatly exceeded the School’s expectations, industry partners contributed $138,000.

Since 2016, $237,376 has been raised for bursaries at the School through the School’s partnership with Audi Centre Brisbane.

We take great pleasure in acknowledging our industry partners. Without your support we could not have celebrated the School’s sesquicentenary and our graduates’ notable contribution to the city of Brisbane and the State of Queensland.

Thank you for supporting diversity and open access through needs-based bursaries.

The final outcome was gratifying, with funds raised above costs providing a bursary for a student in financial need.
