SUPPORT YOUR CHILD’S TRANSITION As a parent there are many ways that you can support your child’s transition to full-time schooling. The development of age-appropriate skills can assist your child with a smoother transition to formal learning.

At Brisbane Adventist College, we consider each child’s readiness for Prep by focusing on the whole child - including their social, emotional and physical capabilities. This guide is designed to indicate the types of skills that you may wish to practise at home with your child in preparation for school.

GROSS MOTOR SKILLS Gross motor skills increase when large muscle groups (e.g. arms and legs) develop greater coordination and strength.

1.

I can crawl using opposite arms/legs

I am working towards jumping over things, hopping on one leg, and balancing without falling over

3.

I am working towards climbing up things on a playground

4. I am working towards kicking, bouncing, throwing, rolling and catching a ball

FINE MOTOR SKILLS Fine motor skills refer to the movement and control of small muscles groups, including hands, wrists, fingers, feet and toes.

1.

I can use a pencil or crayon to make marks (regardless of grip)

2.

I am working towards writing my own name

3.

I can manipulate small construction pieces (e.g. Lego) to build something

4. I am working towards using scissors independently

LITERACY AND NUMERACY Literacy and numeracy skills develop when a child explores and expresses themselves through play and problem-solving. These skills are the foundation for further learning.

I enjoy listening to stories and ‘read’ with others at home

I can say or sing the alphabet

3.

I am working towards recognising the letters/sounds in my first name

4. I am working towards recognising the letters in the alphabet 5.

I am working towards recognising numbers and can count some objects

6. I have an awareness of rhyming and patterns in books or songs

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SKILLS Social and emotional compentency involves the ability to regulate emotions and developing an understanding of social interactions and situations.

1.

I can communicate my needs to an adult and know when to ask for help (e.g. when I am hurt, unwell, unhappy, or need the toilet)

2.

I am able to separate from my parents/ caregiver without emotional distress

3.

I am able to comply with requests and obey instructions

4. I can say my first name and respond when my name is called 5.

I have an understanding of sharing and taking turns

6. I can keep my hands and feet to myself 7.

I am working towards facing the person talking to me, and making eye contact

I can confidently manage the toileting process myself

2.

I can appropriately wash and dry my hands using soap

3.

I know what my lunch box and water bottle look like

INDEPENDENCE SKILLS As children grow and develop they become more self-sufficient, express themselves clearly, and explore their world independently.

4. I can take care of my own belongings and put them away where they belong (e.g. putting my hat in my chair bag) 5.

I can put my own shoes on and take them off (Velcro not laces)

6. I can follow two-step instructions (e.g.

“Push your chair in and put your hat on”) 7.

I am learning to pack up my toys and put my things away

8. I am working towards blowing and wiping my nose on my own 9.

I can understand the need for safety (e.g. roads, heights)
