This past summer, Brilliant Labs mentors, with the support of over 60 community centres, public libraries, schools and youth-serving organizations throughout Atlantic Canada hosted more than 8000 Summer STEAM Camp youth throughout most communities in Atlantic Canada. To help provide new opportunities and reach more youth, we also offered virtual STEAM camps that introduced special interest topics like Space Exploration, Math-tastic, Cyber Security, Web Development, Robotics, and Entrepreneurship throughout our region and beyond.

In this issue of Brilliant Labs Magazine: Summer Reflection, we explore the value of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math education in our community summer camps through stories written by BL STEAM Mentors.

We welcome Will Collins, Phd, and Director of Bio Innovation, to our Brilliant Labs team, a multi-faceted researcher with a background in Neuroscience, Pharmacology and Biomedical Engineering. Will is helping bring enthusiasm for biomedical research and a zeal for opensource bioreactors, lab robotics and biomaking to youth and educators in Atlantic Canada. We also introduce our 2022-23 Teacher Programming Guide, Professional Learning workshops, and information about our Innovation Challenges like Ocean Tech, Circular Making, Innovative Fashion and the return of Community of the Future to help readers plan for their school year.

Now join us as we celebrate a brilliant summer of STEAM Learning in Atlantic Canada.

Cet été, les mentors en STIMA (Science, Technologie, Ingénierie, Mathématiques et Arts) des Labos Créatifs, avec la contribution de plus de 60 centres communautaires, bibliothèques publiques, écoles, et organismes au service des jeunes, à travers le Canada atlantique, ont accueilli plus de 8 000 jeunes dans nos camps d’été gratuits. Ces camps, offerts dans la grande majorité des communautés atlantique, permettent aux jeunes d’acquérir de nouvelles compétences numériques. Nous avons également offert des camps STIMA virtuels qui ont présenté des sujets d’intérêt particulier comme l’exploration de l’espace, Math-tastic, la cybersécurité, le développement web, la robotique et l’entrepreneuriat à travers notre région et au-delà.

Dans cette édition de notre revue, Labos Créatifs : Réflexion d’été, nous explorons la valeur de l’enseignement STIMA dans nos camps d’été communautaires par l’entremise de chroniques écrits par nos mentors. Nous souhaitons aussi la bienvenue à Will Collins, qui possède un doctorat en bio médecine et se joint à nous avec le rôle de directeur de la bioinnovation pour les Labos Créatifs. Ce chercheur à multiples facettes possède une formation en neurosciences, en pharmacologie, et en génie biomédical. Will aide à apporter l’enthousiasme et la curiosité pour la recherche bionovatrice et un zèle pour les bioréacteurs de source ouverte, la robotique de laboratoire et la fabrication de biomatériaux pour les jeunes et les enseignants du Canada atlantique. Nous présentons également notre guide de programmation pour enseignants 2022-23, notre offre de service comprend des ateliers d’apprentissage professionnel, de l’information sur nos nouveaux défis d’innovation tels que l’innovation océanique, la fabrication circulaire, Ia mode novatrice, ainsi que le retour de notre défi communauté du futur et plusieurs autres options afin de vous aider à planifier votre année scolaire.

This summer Brilliant Labs welcomed Will Collins to our growing team.

Will grew up both within Boston and the area just south of the city. He shared that “Boston can be a strange place because everyone seems to go there for university so I more-or-less waited for everyone else to come to me and never left for an extended period of time.”

Will did his undergraduate at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA, where he studied Neuroscience and ran Cross Country and Track.

After, he joined the Tufts University Graduate School of Biological Sciences (Tufts GSBS) in Boston, MA for a PhD in Pharmacology but spent most of his time on the campus in Medford, MA. Between college and graduate school Will was contraced by QinetiQ-NA to do defense research as an analytical chemist in both their Survivability and Transportation groups.

Following graduate school Will worked as a postdoctoral researcher with the University of Ottawa’s Pelling Lab developing unusual materials for tissue engineering.

We asked Will to share more and whe his goals are in working with Brilliant Labs.

In your lifetime has anyone inspired you to change your mind, for the better, to overcome an obstacle?

I’m alway amazed by the diversity of personalities one encounters in the sciences.

Some fit the mold of what we’d expect but many do not.

One such example that 6

always gave me solace was physicist Richard Feynman who stood in stark contrast to his brilliant poly-math contemporary Murray GellMann. The two could not be more different in their approach to research as GellMann was studious and careful and Feynman a charismatic rogue. This is also reflected in their work as Feynman became famous for ‘Feynman diagrams’ that express subatomic particle collisions whereas Gell-Mann would never dream of doing such a thing. All of this is a roundabout way of saying that so many of us convince ourselves that we do not fit the picture of what a researcher looks like but the reality is stubbornness often wins out over sheer intellect. I happen to put myself in the more eccentric category but just so happen to be extraordinarily stubborn.

Feynman could have just as well become a spiritual guru or something else besides a physicist. Reading the biographies of many world famous scientists gave me hope after discovering how fantastically maladaptive they could be and yet still be a part of the scientific community.

What is your passion?

This is going to sound strange but I love breaking things. Not in the shameless destruction of property sense but more in the breaking of dogmatic perspectives and maintaining the ‘established’ (i.e. outdated) ways of doing things. We have a societal problem of anointing a handful of experts so decided by large institutions when the reality is that a passionate hobbyist can often be considerably more effective.

As for my personal interest in open source bioreactor systems I hope I and others can bring ‘prometheus moments’ to the classroom by making the tools for discovery more accessible.

Tell us about your favorite project.

If we mean big projects I would have to say the Human Genome Project as one of the largest collaborative scientific achievements in human history. If we mean personal projects I would have to say my bioreactor systems and lab automation efforts. Both are an important lens to interpret all of the things biology can be. Looking back only a handful of projects like the Human Genome project and early invention of the internet had such resounding benefits as to return the cost of the project many times over. It took many years after the

some students see potential future realities for themselves they otherwise might not have imagined, While there is no mythical sorting hat the best we can do as educators is to craft a story of ways that things might be.

What advice would you give teachers who are interested in bringing making to the classroom?

There are many ways of understanding something and often the medium by which we incorporate our message determines how effectively it is conveyed.

Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences has some true validity and perhaps for many of the students we attempt to appeal to, we are not reaching them through their most accessible medium of expression. Somewhere in the stages of our evolution we went from natural tool users

to dealing primarily with abstractions of written and spoken language and skipped over a lot of potentially useful venues for understanding one another.

If you could recommend a good read for teachers, what would it be?

I have a great fondness for the book “Thinking, Fast and Slow” and the implications it might have on our perspectives of standardized testing. While I understand the relevance of gauging a students grasp of the curriculum we put substantial emphasis on fast thinking. I underwent a great deal of standardized testing but not to the extent other students have. Some of my college classmates can attest to the deep sense of anxiety it instilled in them at ages as early as fourteen which persists to this day.

Other thoughts or inspirational quotes?

“We made gods and jailers because we felt small (...) and alone. We let them try us and judge us (...) we allowed ourselves to be sentenced.

See! Now our sentences are up!” Grant Morrison This quote exemplifies how we often limit our options for who we could ‘grow up to be’ because we fear some authority might find us out and accuse us of being a charlatan. The truth is those authority figures are self imposed or may be charlatans themselves and those who truly want our personal growth are more inclined to open our metaphorical cages.

We rely heavily on our senses as a means of interpreting the world around us but oftentimes these senses mislead us in subtle ways we can’t always identify. For example, our interpretation of colors can be tweaked by the amount of sleep we have or our mind set at the time. Some individuals have a physiological condition, known as synesthesia, in which visual, tactile and auditory experiences can bleed together resulting in colors having tastes or sounds. A significant portion of the population is subject to color blindness and have trouble distinguishing red and green or blue and yellow. Perhaps it is better to think of these sensorial experiences as interpretive and ostensibly subject to change on a whim. From a philosophy-of-mind perspective these sensorial experiences could be regarded as collaborative interpretations of the world around us that are much less black and white (or red and green) as they appear.

Fundamentally all of our sensorial experiences are received through the lens of biology; somewhere between our ears, nostrils and eyes.

Consider that there are sounds beyond the frequency we can hear and radiant colors in the ultraviolet spectra beyond what we can visualize. In order to have a reliable sensory experience we maintain a fine balance with our own biology and the externalities of the world around us. But just as easily as a sensorial experience can become enlightening it can take a turn for the worse if we have not properly taken care of ourselves and others (i.e. some of the microbes) that make the experience meaningful.

Consider that the average 90 kg (200 lbs) adult may have anywhere between 1 to 2.7 kg (2-6 lbs) of their body mass may be composed of microbes within their gut (~3%) (CITE). This gut microbiome is suspected to contribute to all varieties of physiological health ranging from our immune system to availability of neurotransmitters.

The gut-brain axis indirectly

controls how we feel and perceive our environment and has knock on effects for cognition. For instance, the starting chemicals for neurotransmitters, tokens of exchange within the brain, are sourced from our diets and microbes are often the intermediaries that make this process possible. Upon closer inspection you will find microbes are behind the scenes more than you would expect.

Let's break down these senses of taste, smell, sight, sound and touch and how they can be subject to the vagaries of interpretation.

Biology, or any living thing for that matter, can never be definitively nailed down without taking extraordinary measures. Our emphasis will revolve around ‘biocollaboration’ and really underscore the word ‘collaboration’ in the active sense. Microbes and living things are active partners to humans but require thoughtful engagement.

How can bio-collaboration improve our experience of colors, smells and tastes? An equitable working relationship with our microbes will yield meaningful experiences in an entirely different realm.

Taste - we typically experience taste within the dimensions of sweet, sour, salty, bitter and savory. It is the last flavor, savory, that is the most elusive to pin down. Let's think about taste in context to fermentation. The popular condiment soy-sauce is made from the fermentation of soybeans and roasted wheat exposed to spores of aspergillus. However, another such organism (Clostridium botulinum) might result in the production of potent toxic compounds as encountered in botulism.

Furthermore, the preparation of Fugu or Japanese puffer fish might result in a sensation of tingling in your mouth due to mild exposure to tetrodotoxin, or it might be too much.

Smell - Contemplating the sense of smell evokes the scent of freshly cut grass or the strong aroma of

used gym socks. Smell is most strongly associated with overwhelming memories of longing or revulsion and acts as an ‘early warning system’ for taste. The aromas invoked are the result of aerosolized compounds biologically produced to let us know in advance how best to interpret our surroundings prior to making decisions we might otherwise regret.

Sight - As mentioned previously there is an entire spectrum of colours in the infrared frequency (IR) that insects can see while we cannot. Additionally, our interpretation of colours is often regarded to be highly subjective to our mindset at the time. Feeling blue can result in your interpreting colours as more gray or muted than they would appear to your cheerful peers as a result of a complex interplay of neurotransmitters within the brain.

Sound - It is a small miracle we can interpret sound at all as the result of three tiny bones in the ear called the incus, malleaus, and stapes that transmit membrane fluctuations into bioelectric frequencies to be interpreted by our brain. To think that many amphibians like frogs and crocodiles have a single drum known as a tympanum to interpret all varieties of sounds. Consider how a stuffy head cold dampens our hearing much of anything and you will understand how sound is intimately related to our biology.

Touch - Through the lens of biology touch is more challenging to interpret. Let's consider the our skin as a vehicle by which we interpret the texture. The health of our skin, as a function of the microbes that inhabit it, is a good measure of how accurate that interpretation might be. The toe fungus that lives aboard my leathery feet might be a poor conduit for feeling the soft velvety texture of egyptian cotton nevertheless my socks are exclusively made of high end fabrics.

In taking all of the sensorial experiences summarized above one can be overwhelmed by the sheer number of interpretations to be had.

For these reasons it is best to engage this flurry of sensorial experiences as a festive event or carnival. In doing so we are obligated to collect all of the microbes that change our sensorial experiences.

A sensorial journey is a continuous feed of information mingled with noisy signals of tactile awareness pulling us in every direction. But biocollaboration pulls our sensory experience in a dramatic sense in which we otherwise could not experience. It’s as if we have been seeing the world in black and white only to suddenly begin seeing in full technicolor. Or say we’ve been experiencing bland taste only to garnish the most exquisite flavor. A proper bio-collaboration yields a refreshing break from normality as the result of attentiveness and hard work to establish an experience.

How can we ‘take care’ of our microbes so they can take care of us? This is a big question and requires a scientific mindset to properly address. It starts with our awareness of the problem of how

best to look after microbes. When we can establish what makes healthy and happy microbes we can tend to our own biological indirectly as well.

to recover from stasis in which they emerge from deep freeze to lazily, haltingly come back to life. These small efficiencies are what make our microbe collaboration possible and rewarding.

Each of these microbes is a part of the diversity of life being collected to preserve its uniqueness. In something of narcissistic regard, we are preserving their uniqueness for our own selfish devices. As with some relationships they emerge from an ingrained need or desire and over time become more collaborative as the relationship develops. Maybe initially we think of a microbial collaborator in the context to what they can do for us but begin to appreciate their unique qualities; perhaps they are a particular hue of maroon or put off the smell of fresh rain known as petrichor.But imagine building this meaningful collaboration with several million microbes. The amount of work would be staggering to say the least.

Each contingent of microbes can be placed in a small vial no larger than your pinky finger to be either frozen in liquid nitrogen or desiccated to be resuspended and summoned back to life at a later time. Many microbes have a remarkable ability

5 5 MINUTES PAR SAMANTHA MCRAE, DIGITAL MEDIA MARKETING ASSISTANT Alexy Leger est un étudiant passionné qui travaille avec Labos Créatifs en tant que mentor STIMA depuis 2020. Alexy s'est engagé dans le domaine de la technologie dès un jeune âge et a passé l'été dernier à organiser des camps sur la cybersécurité, la programmation, la biofabrication et bien plus encore ! Il étudie présentement à l'Université de Moncton avec une concentration en informatique et espère poursuivre une carrière dans le domaine de la technologie.

Nous avons eu un atelier de cybersécurité à notre école secondaire et nous avons fait une démonstration avec les b.Boards. J'ai eu la chance d'apprendre à coder en me connectant au nuage Labos Créatifs et j'ai expérimenté avec des lumières DEL contrôlées par la météo. Tout cela était très cool !

Comment êtes-vous entré en contact avec Labos Créatifs ?

Nous avons eu un atelier de cybersécurité à notre école secondaire et nous avons fait une démonstration avec les b.Boards. J'ai eu la chance d'apprendre à coder en me connectant au nuage Labos Créatifs et j'ai expérimenté avec des lumières DEL contrôlées par la météo. Tout cela était très cool ! Quelques mois plus tard, la pandémie a frappé et en juin, j'ai reçu un appel de mon enseignant de technologie m'informant que Labos Créatifs recrutait et qu'il pensait que je serais un bon candidat. C'est ainsi que j'ai obtenu le poste. J'ai discuté avec Jeff et quelques semaines plus tard, je suis devenu un mentor STIMA. Avez-vous toujours été intéressé par l'informatique ?

Oui ! Je m'intéresse à l'informatique depuis longtemps. Quand j'étais jeune, j'avais l'habitude d'appeler mon oncle parce que mes parents avaient souvent des virus sur leur ordinateur. Il travaillait pour Microsoft et m'a appris à réinstaller Windows chaque fois que nous avions un virus. C'est ainsi que j'ai commencé à m'intéresser à la technologie et je l'ai toujours

admiré.

Quel était votre rôle en tant que mentor STEAM ?

Nous organisions des camps dans le sud-est du NouveauBrunswick sur Scratch, TinkerCad, la biofabrication et la cybersécurité. Nous organisions des ateliers où les enfants pouvaient créer des jeux ou des conceptions 3D. Beaucoup d'entre eux aimaient créer des jouets. Un de nos campeurs a construit des pièces de rechange pour ses

legos. C'était une expérience vraiment agréable.

Pouvez-vous partager un moment où vous ou vos campeurs ont été engagés d'une manière qui vous a influencé ?

Lorsque j'ai fait équipe avec Evan et Greyson pour organiser le camp d'été virtuel sur la cybersécurité. J'ai vraiment apprécié ce camp et j'ai eu l'occasion d'en apprendre beaucoup sur le terminal linux et la programmation. C'était une barrière importante pour moi, je n'avais jamais programmé auparavant et je n'avais jamais utilisé de commandes.

Labos Créatifs m'a donné l'occasion de briser cette barrière et de voir que ce n'est pas si compliqué et que j'aimerais faire cela à l'avenir. Cela a vraiment confirmé pour moi que je voulais continuer avec l'informatique dans mes études postsecondaires.

Dans ce cas, mon inspiration et mon engagement peuvent être attribués au fait de travailler avec une équipe formidable et aux opportunités qui m'ont été présentées par Labos Créatifs.

Pourquoi pensez-vous que les laboratoires créatifs sont importants dans les écoles ?

Nous n'avions pas de laboratoire créatif dans mon école, mais je pense qu'il est important d'y avoir accès ou de faire appel à l'équipe des Labos Créatifs, car il s'agit d'une installation essentielle pour développer des idées.

Je m'intéresse beaucoup à la robotique et si j'avais eu la chance d'accéder à l'un de ces espaces, j'aurais pu utiliser cette pratique pour apprendre à construire un robot.

J'aime beaucoup apprendre par la pratique, et lorsque je suis en mesure de construire mon propre robot, j'apprends aussi bien le côté mécanique que le côté programmation. Lorsque j'ai participé à des compétitions de robotique, j'ai eu l'occasion de vraiment développer mes compétences. Il est important pour les élèves qui apprennent kinétiquement d'avoir un espace où ils peuvent fabriquer.

Que fabriquez-vous ?

Je construis des robots ! En fait, je viens de me joindre à l'équipe de robotique de l'Université de Moncton, alors c'est quelque chose que j’aime beaucoup faire. Je viens d'être accepté dans l'équipe aujourd'hui, alors j'ai hâte d'en apprendre davantage.

Quels conseils donneriezvous à d'autres étudiants qui s'intéressent à la technologie et qui cherchent un moyen d'éveiller leur intérêt ?

La programmation est généralement le point de départ de l'apprentissage des logiciels. En matière de programmation, la meilleure façon d'apprendre à programmer est souvent d'expérimenter ! Jouez avec, voyez comment certains blocs de code se comportent et poussez le code à ses limites. J'aime casser mon propre code, car cela me permet de voir les limites de mon robot ou du code luimême.

Quelle est la prochaine étape pour vous ?

J'aimerais me diriger vers le développement de logiciels.

Alexy has dedicated himself to the field of technology from a young age and spent this past summer delivering camps about cybersecurity, programming, biomaking and much more! He is currently studying at the Université de Moncton with a focus in computer science and hopes to continue on into a career in technology.

We had a cyber security workshop at our high school and we had a demo with the b.Boards. I had the chance to learn how to code by connecting to the Brilliant Labs Cloud and we experimented with weather controlled LED lights. It was all very cool!

How did you become involved with Brilliant Labs?

We had a cyber security workshop at our high school and we had a demo with the b.Boards. I had the chance to learn how to code by connecting to the Brilliant Labs Cloud and we experimented with weather controlled LED lights. It was all very cool! A few months after that the pandemic hit and when june came, I had a call from my tech teacher letting me know that Brilliant Labs was hiring and they thought I’d be a good candidate and that’s how I got the job. I had a talk with Jeff Willson and a few weeks later, I became a STEAM mentor (2020, Grade 10).

Have you always been interested in computer science?

Yeah! I have been interested in computer science for quite a while. When I was young I used to call up my uncle because my parents often got viruses on their computer. He used to work for microsoft and he taught me how to reinstall 20

windows whenever we got a virus. So that was kind of my start with technology and I have always looked up to him.

What was your role as a STEAM mentor?

We were delivering camps around south- east New Brunswick delivering camps about Scratch, TinkerCad, biomaking and cyber security. We held workshops where kids can either create games or 3D designs. A lot of them liked creating toys. One of our campers built spare parts for his legos. It was a really

enjoyable experience.

Can you share a moment where either you or your campers were engaged in a way that influenced you?

When I teamed up with Evan and Greyson to deliver the virtual Cyber Security summer camp, really enjoyed that and I had the opportunity to learn a lot about the linux terminal and programming.

That had been a big barrier for me, having never programmed before or never having used commands.

Brilliant Labs gave me the opportunity to break the barrier and see that it’s not that complicated and that I would enjoy doing this in the future. It really confirmed for me that I wanted to continue with computer science in my post secondary studies. In this case, my inspiration and engagement can be attributed to working with a great team and the opportunities presented to me by Brilliant Labs.

Why do you think Maker Spaces are important in schools?

Well we didn’t have a Maker Space in my school but I feel it’s important to have access to one or the Brilliant Labs team as it’s a crucial facility to develop ideas. I’m really into robotics and if I had had the chance to access a Maker Space, I could have used that hands-on practice to learn how to build a robot. I am very much a hands-on learner so when I am able to actually build my own robot, I will learn both the mechanical side of things as well as the programming side. When I did robotics competitions, that was a chance to truly develop my skills. It is important for students who learn kinetically, to have a space where they can make.

What do you make?

What advice would you give to other students who are interested in technology and looking for a way to engage that interest?

Programming is usually where you should start on the software end of things. When it comes to programming, often the best way to learn how to program is experimenting! Try things out, see how certain blocks of code behave and push things to the limits. I like breaking my own code because I get to see the limitations of my robot or the code itself.

What is next for you?

I am interested in going into software development. I am currently studying computer science at the University of Moncton. I’m not sure exactly where I am going but I am very inspired by my uncle as I mentioned. He currently works at Amazon and he has mentioned that he would help me get an internship. I know for sure that’s where I’d like to end up in the technology field, maybe even cyber security. I am open to different opportunities.

L’artiste sculpteur-conteur Est-ce que vous connaissez M. Luc Cyr, cet artiste sculpteur natif de Baker Brook? Il incarne parfaitement le portrait d’un “maker”. Depuis qu’il est tout petit, le besoin de « fabriquer » l’anime ainsi que d'arriver à créer soi-même et concrétiser des idées. Son intérêt pour le design et son accès aux outils et aux matières premières ont rendu la production possible au fil des ans, et encore aujourd'hui.

Dans son atelier vibrant de créations, une atmosphère de l’imaginaire et de possibilités capture l’attention de chaque personne qui franchit la porte.

D’abord mentionnons qu’à l’entrée de l’atelier, il est possible de tirer sur une poignée d'un canard sculpté permettant d’actionner le son d’une trompette, qui est en fait un ancien klaxon de camion de transport. Ce qui est encore plus extraordinaire, c’est que le son sort par une sculpture d’un trompettiste qui gît au sommet de la toiture!

Génial, n’est-ce pas? Que dire aussi de la gouttière de pluie en forme de gargouille? Extra-ordinaire!!!

En entrant, les regards des invités se rivent sur une variété d’objets que l’on peut observer et apprécier au mur, sur des étagères ainsi qu’au plafond! Chaque petit coin de l’atelier affiche une différente création et tous les sens sont interpellés. On y retrouve également la photo du grand-père de Luc, ainsi que des outils fièrement exposés au mur, révélant une belle partie de son histoire, son admiration et sa grande inspiration!

Fabrication avec des élèves de 3e année Voici que le 6 juin, les élèves de 3e année de la classe de Madame Pauline Clair du Centre d’Apprentissage du Haut Madawaska de Clair N.B. se rendent à l’atelier pour rencontrer M. Luc Cyr, entendre ses histoires et apprendre avec lui. À leur arrivée, que de bouches bées, de regards d’étonnement et d’émerveillement surent combler les visages des enfants. Un monde de création et d'imaginaire se présentait à eux! En plus, Luc su rapidement retenir l’attention des jeunes avec sa voix sereine et ses qualités de conteur!

Car, vous savez, Luc adore partager ses histoires de personnages du passé et d’anecdotes amusantes avec les invités de tous les âges.

Quel plaisir ce fut pour eux de relever ce défi en utilisant à la fois une perceuse, des vis et des clous!

La collaboration entre les élèves était très importante et assurait la réalisation du projet. Il va sans dire qu’avec Luc Cyr, on ne fait pas les coins ronds. Chaque nichoir devait être fabriqué avec patience, précision et attention.

Elles étaient alors bleues, vertes et rouges ces belles cabanes! Chaque enfant la portait fièrement à la sortie de l’atelier. Et en plus, avant de quitter, Luc remit un beau sifflet sculpté à chaque enfant et aux adultes accompagnateurs. De précieux cadeaux et quelle belle activité intergénérationnelle, favorisant le partage de passions, de savoirs, de savoir-faire et la création de belles amitiés!

À la sortie de l’atelier, on fit résonner le klaxon une dernière fois et les enfants remontèrent dans l’autobus afin de reprendre la route pour l’Eko Nature Glamping au Lac Baker!

Assis dans son fauteuil roulant, Luc se déplace d’un coin à l’autre de l’atelier pour y travailler le bois. De l’idéation, il développe des croquis, passe à l’étape de coller des planches qui serviront ensuite à la création de figurines, d’oiseaux, de baleines, de bâtons de marche, de nichoirs d’oiseaux, de panneaux d’affiches et de toutes autres. Il ne s’agit que de lui proposer une idée, et voilà que l’artiste plonge à plein Brilliant Labs Magazine Revue Labos Créatifs

d’hébergement en nature, accueillit les enfants pour y faire une visite des dômes et un pique-nique sur les patios avec cette vue extraordinaire du Lac Baker. Les enfants poursuivirent avec la marche du Sentier Meruimticook pour y installer les nichoirs, appuyés par Scott ainsi qu’Amélie Tremblay, biologiste passionnée et de son équipe de la Société d’aménagement de la Rivière Madawaska et également faire de nombreuses découvertes et apprentissages en nature.

Alors, si vous passez par le Lac Baker bientôt, chaussez vos espadrilles ou bottes de marche et partez en randonnée dans le merveilleux sentier Meruimticook où vous aurez l’occasion d’apprécier la nature et les beaux nichoirs colorés fabriqués par les élèves de 3e année de la classe de Madame 26

Le mouvement maker Le mouvement maker joue un rôle d’une grande importance dans les réformes de l’éducation. Selon la théorie du “constructionnisme”, le meilleur moyen de construire la connaissance et la compréhension consiste à construire quelque chose qui puisse être partagé en dehors de la tête de l’élève (Papert & Harel, 1991), tels les beaux nichoirs d’oiseaux fabriqués par les élèves de 3e année. En utilisant une réflexion créative et critique, les élèves travaillent en collaboration pour explorer des matériaux, utiliser des outils et de l'équipement, concevoir, construire, développer des processus et communiquer les mérites de leur

travail de manière unique et passionnante.

Le mouvement maker valorise également la passion humaine, les capacités et l'aptitude à faire bouger les choses et à résoudre les problèmes partout et à tout moment. Les salles de classe qui mettent d’avant le processus de conception et de fabrication, incluant le dépassement des défis, produisent des élèves qui commencent à croire qu'ils peuvent résoudre n'importe quel problème.

Alors, n’attendons plus pour mettre en valeur ces “makers inspirants” comme M. Luc Cyr dans le but de leur offrir des occasions de rencontres et de partages avec les élèves. Il n’y a pas de limite ce que des personnes passionnées et engagées peuvent partager, encourager, appuyer et aider à

accomplir! N’est-ce pas de cette façon que nous arriverons à apporter des changements positifs dans le monde?

The Sculptor and Storyteller Mr. Luc Cyr is the perfect portrait of a "maker". Since his childhood, the need to "make" has driven him to create. His interest in design and access to tools and raw materials made production possible throughout the years, and still does to this day.

In his vibrant workshop, an atmosphere of imagination and possibilities captures the attention of every person who walks through the door.

At the doorway, it is possible to pull on a handle (carved in the shape of a duck) to activate the sound of a trumpet, which is in fact an old transport truck horn. What is even more extraordinary is that the sound comes out from a sculpture of a trumpeter that stands at the top of the roof! Awesome, isn't it? And, you should see the gargoyle rain gutter downspout? Just out of this world!

Upon entering, guests' eyes are drawn to a variety of objects that can be seen and appreciated on the wall, on shelves and on the ceiling!

Each little corner of the workshop displays a different creation and all the senses are challenged. Luc's grandfather's photo and tools are proudly displayed on the wall, revealing a beautiful part of history, his admiration and his great inspiration!

Centre d’Apprentissage du Haut Madawaska came to the workshop to meet Mr. Luc Cyr, hear his stories and learn important woodworking skills with him. When they arrived, the children's eyes were filled with amazement. A world of imagination and creation was presented to them! In addition, Luc quickly captured their attention with his serene voice and his storytelling talent! Because, you know, Luc loves to share his stories of characters from the past and amusing anecdotes with guests of all ages.

"My grandfather was my idol," Luc Cyr shared with the children. "I started sculpting at your age, inspired by my grandfather's work in his workshop." "Every day after school I would go there."

Beginning with a demonstration of some tools and carving, Luc then invited the children to build their birdhouses. What fun it was for them to take on this challenge using a drill, screws and nails! The collaboration between the students was very important and ensured the completion of the project. It goes without saying that with Luc Cyr, there are no corners cut. Each birdhouse had to be made with patience, precision and care.

They were blue, green and red, these beautiful birdhouses! Each

child proudly held his while walking out of the workshop. And, before leaving, Luc offered a beautiful sculpted whistle to each child and adult. Such a precious gift and what a great intergenerational activity, promoting the sharing of passions, knowledge, resources as well as creating friendships!

The exploration of the Meruimticook trail and the installation of birdhouses at Eko Nature Glamping: While leaving Luc's workshop, the handle was pulled one last time, putting out a loud and now familiar sound! The children then got back on the bus to head to the Eko Nature Glamping in Lac Baker!

Upon arrival, Scott Beaulieu, owner of this nature lodging center welcomed the children and took them for a tour of the domes and a picnic on the patios with the amazing view of the lake. The children then continued with a walk on the Meruimticook Trail to chose the location for their birdhouses, accompanied by Scott and Amélie Tremblay, a passionate biologist and her team from the Société d'aménagement de la Rivière Madawaska. They also had the chance to make many discoveries and learning in nature.

Sitting in his wheelchair, Luc moves from one corner of the workshop to the other to work with wood. From ideation, he develops sketches, often moving on to gluing boards that will then be used for carving and creating figurines, birds, whales, walking sticks, birdhouses, signs and more. All it takes is an idea, and the artist dives right into his passion and his creative element. On the ceiling, we also find the outline of visitors' hands!

If you happen to pass close to Lac Baker one day, put on your running shoes or hiking boots and go for a hike on the wonderful Meruimticook trail where you'll have the opportunity to appreciate nature and the beautiful and colorful birdhouses made by the grade 3 students from Clair.

The maker movement The maker movement has a very important role to play in educational reform. Classrooms that put forward the process of design and making, that includes overcoming challenges, produce students who start to believe they can solve any problem.

So, let’s not wait any longer to value these inspiring makers like Mr Luc Cyr and provide them with opportunities to meet and share with students.

This summer saw the exciting return of Brilliant Labs’ free, inperson STEAM Camps to Atlantic Canada! Our camps had been disrupted over the past two years due to COVID-19, and they returned this summer with over 8,500 enthusiastic youth from all walks of life attending in-person & virtual camps. Across the region, youth had lots of fun learning how to be artists, engineers, designers, scientists, and inventors through hands-on, experiential learning. As well, in offering a 36

wide-range of engaging activities and projects, camp participants developed their digital knowledge and skills using today's technology.

None of this would have been possible without our partnerships with 40 community centres, public libraries, schools and youthserving organizations who hosted our STEAM Camps in their locations, free-ofcharge. Hats off as well to our brilliant STEAM Mentors and Coordinators who worked with us this summer,

In addition to our in-person camps, Brilliant Labs offered virtual camps, which included special interest topics to engage children (grades 1 to 6+). These compelling learning opportunities were accessible from anywhere that had an internet connection and included themes such as Above and Beyond: Space Exploration, Art-chitecture to Math-tastic Journey, Cybersecurity, Entrepreneurship and Web Development, just to name few. Nova Scotia camp participants made their imagination into reality as they told their own stories with multimedia tools! Flip-book animation, stop-motion, and green screen technology were just some of the techniques used to create box-office worthy digital shorts!

SchoolsPlus / EcolesPlus delivering BBI Business is Jammin’, Digital Nova Scotia, Clare: Cleaning up the planet in PEI PEI summer camps helped reduce waste by using recycled plastic bottles and paper to launch bottle rockets. Kids made their own paper to decorate the rockets using recycled paper, mushrooms and water! Such a blast!!

ow fun and learning has made my STEAM Mentor experience Brilliant!”

Hi, I’m Sandy AbuJayyab, Brilliant Labs Summer Camp Coordinator, and this summer I was given the opportunity to help our awesome STEAM mentors deliver our brilliant activities to youth across Atlantic Canada. As someone who is always looking for opportunities to learn and develop new skills, I was thrilled to work with an organization who aims to provide youth the chance to explore new ideas while inspiring limitless creativity and innovation.

Beyond the rewards of seeing the smiles on the children’s faces as they progressed through the camp sessions, it was rewarding to hear from the mentors about how much they enjoyed working with the children and spending their summer sharing their passions and interests.

Working alongside the program specialists in Saint John and visiting the camps, I was able to learn about new technologies and explore new ideas. I also learned lots of new information from the virtual camps and I was very glad to see the children turning on their cameras and microphones to engage in the camp session.

Thank you to the mentors for their hard work this summer and sharing their passion for technology and learning. This summer would not have been the same without our great summer crew.

I would also like to express my gratitude to the management team at Brilliant Labs for their endless support and guidance throughout the summer. As someone new to this position, it was reassuring to know that that many were available

to help when needed.

Since these are areas I have passion in I wanted to show youths the cool things we do everyday in the field of technology.

Hi Everyone! My name is Abby Georgiadis and I am going into my final year of high school at Miramichi Valley. I am very grateful that I was given this amazing opportunity this summer to be one of the steam mentors for the Miramichi area. These camps have been very edifying for both myself and the kids and I hope that it will inspire some new interests. My favorite part about working with the kids is the reactions of amazement and excitement when they do something new, some of the ideas they come up with are incredible and I love being a part of the spark they get when the creative juices are flowing.

I have enjoyed every second spent with the kids and the most important takeaway would be that sometimes you just have to go with the flow, not everything works out the way you want it to but sometimes you gotta just switch the plan up a bit and everything and everyone will be alright. I had some knowledge prior to this experience with

coding in various languages, but I have to say that I’ve learned a lot in the past couple of weeks and I can’t wait to further broaden my knowledge.

Although I plan to pursue a career in business, the skills I have gained are a huge asset that will set me up for success for a lifetime.

Over the course of the Summer of 2022, our Saint John Brilliant Labs STEAM Mentor Team brought creative, technology driven learning to camps across the region. Area 506 (an annual summer festival and vendor village found on the waterfront in Uptown Saint John NB) presented a unique opportunity to bring this style of learning directly to the public, and our goal from the outset was to try to capture the energy of a MakerFaire, then share that with the growing waterfront community. The team loaded one of the containers with all the supplies to help youth dream, build and create using

3D printers, Micro:bits, b.Boards, Makey Makeys, Dash and Dots, and enough laptops to host a small class.

The BL container became an engaging Lab that was filled with energetic youth.

The sun was on our side for the week we took over the space. Thanks to that, youth had the chance to try code the Dash and Dot robots, turning the courtyard in front of our space into a mini robotics fair. From the courtyard, entering inside the Brilliant Labs container, you were greeted with two 3D printers running like workhorses to print off small projects that visitors

designed! Those who designed a print, were also able to learn how to print it, and take home their first 3D printed object. For those who took an interest in programming, we provided lessons on how to code Micro:bits with Brilliant Labs b.Boards, designed animations and games with Scratch. Some kids wanted to learn the more advanced aspects of these tools. We helped them by guiding their learning and found that often they didn’t want to leave and were asking their parents to bring them back the next day!

Nonetheless, this limited time allowed our BL team to

both challenge and expand their skill sets in an engaging way.

Only a few days into our time at the Container Villiage we got news that sparked with excitement for our team. The Maiden Factor, a racing boat that was skippered by Tracy Edwards MBE who led the first all-female crew to compete in the notoriously difficult Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989/90, was coming into the Saint John port, its only stop in Canada. Their mission: “The Maiden Factor Foundation works with, raises funds for and supports communities to enable girls into education and empower and support them to remain throughout their teenage years to reach their full potential and create better futures for all”

Maiden Factor history excerpt: “…Over the next six months Tracy [Edwards] and her team redesigned Maiden, ripped her apart and rebuilt her. In September 1988 HRH The Duchess of York graciously ‘christened’ Maiden and went sailing with the girls. Maiden had found a Godmother. Sponsorship for the girls eventually came from King Hussein I of Jordan and she was painted in the livery of the planes; the famous grey hull with its red and gold lines would become an icon of the race.” Learn More about The Maiden Factor’s history and mission to empower girls! To cap off this brilliant week, STEAM mentors Lucia & Nghi along with Program Specialist Neil, were able to meet the crew of the Maiden Factor the morning of their departure from Saint John. This small BL team woke up super early to meet the crew for 7:00am, and were also able to give every member a 3D printed keychain of the Maiden Factor logo that youth helped design! This was such a special moment for both Brilliant Labs & The Maiden Factor. It was an honor this summer to meet the crew and share in the value of empowering young girls in STEAM education.

Brilliant Labs has given me the opportunity to help my community in a lifechanging way. I live in one of Saint John’s priority neighborhoods: The Old North-End is known for it’s poverty. My work educating the youth by doing STEAM Camps has shown me how this work is essential to supporting their socioemotional and educational development.

Brilliant Labs Nova Scotia brought hands-on steam fun to campers across the province this year, by hosting and supporting summer camps from clare to cape breton.

These summer camps were not only important for those that attended, they were also an opportunity for older students to take on a mentorship role within our organization. The brilliant labs summer mentorship program employs students over the summer months, giving them valuable work experience and community connections. They are able to carry over their leadership, maker and steam skills into their upcoming school year, we love having brilliant ambassadors in our nova scotia schools!

Our support ranged from engaging afternoon workshops with partners like the black business initiative's and the ymca to week-long camps with schools plus and la société acadienne de clare.

Kids from ages 5-16 were given access to steam programming with a global twist.

campers tackled un sdg’s numbers 2 (Zero Hunger), 11 (Sustainable Communities and Cities), and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). They did this by learning about growing their own produce and making their own scaleddown greenhouse out of recycled materials.

With our virtual programming, we were able to keep up with the hands-on demand of our campers at home and host a variety of thought-provoking online camps. These camps used everything from online software to everyday items found around the house to create ocean-saving and entrepreneurial prototypes!

BLNS mentors and specialists had the pleasure of introducing the united nations sustainable development goals to campers by integrating them into various steam-based activities. The incorporation of these goals into making helps create an awareness of global issues all while spreading the message to others with powerful projects such as custom buttons, paper circuit art, coding, stopanimation public service announcements, to name a few.

“Neopixel dance parties, drawing unicorns and pikachus, and turning button making into a business,” is what I told others when I described my summer as a STEAM Mentor at Brilliant Labs. Naturally, I would see some bewildered faces as to why I am not dedicating my summer to my studies. As I enter into my final year of high school with hopes of studying neuroscience and history in undergraduate studies, I observed how adolescence and adulthood often omits the elements of fun that I have been lucky to experience with the youth at Brilliant Labs’ Summer STEAM Camps. I held this expectation that I would solely be helping children gain exposure to STEAM. However, it truly were the kids who helped and reminded me how essential it is to prioritize fun which has formed the basis of learning at Brilliant Labs. As such, I want to take a moment to reflect on these moments of fun.

This summer, I have been given the opportunity to mentor at Ecole Beaubassin nearly every week. I became very familiar with the children as I was always welcomed with hugs and enthusiasm for exploring. This group in particular was drawn to micro: bit and b.Board technology and it was clear that they had a high aptitude for learning new aspects of block coding. As an individual who has found a passion for Python coding in junior high school, it warmed my heart seeing so many learn

about if-else statements, arrays, booleans and many other concepts that are applicable to several programming languages. In one session, we were coding neo pixels and included younger aged campers to participate as well. What would have initially been a quick activity, turned into a dance party! We turned the lights off and put on music while the rainbow coloured neo pixel strips created the perfect environment to sing and dance. After the session, one

of the campers came up to me saying how much she hopes to do more coding as she wants to become an electrical engineer. I will never forget the look of pure joy she had when exploring b.Board technology.

Being a mentor at Ecole Beaubassin made me recognize how valuable these moments of fun can be as it sparks so much optimism in youth to pursue their career goals.

My time spent at one of the YMCAs in the Halifax area has also been an extremely rewarding experience in terms of understanding that there is no “cookie-cutter” method to mentoring. As we were exploring stop motion animation, a small group of campers preferred not to work in group settings. I noticed that the same campers had the most creative minds and wanted to express that through their own artwork. During this session, I sat with those who wanted to take a different approach to stop motion by ideating a plan on paper. This later turned into a session where we drew unicorns and Pikachu’s! One camper drew me a unicorn and I still have it hung on my wall. They took so much ownership in their own work. I know that despite not spending the whole time working on stop motion, ideating the steps to a stop motion movie and drawing their favorite characters is more than the creative expression that I hoped would be achieved at the YMCA camps.

in downtown Halifax. All of the campers were able to make profit and knowing that they will continue to use their confidence and talents in other areas of their life, left me feeling inspired to apply that same level of confidence in my life.

I may be at a point in my life where I am responsible for choosing my career path in both the sciences and arts. From all the advice I have been given regarding my career goals, it was my experience working with youth at Brilliant Labs that has taught me to be curious, unique and confident while having fun.

From neo pixel dance parties, to drawing unicorns and Pikachu, to button making; there is no doubt that these young minds will grow up to be nothing less than exceptional.

Lastly, the Black Business Initiative has fostered an environment where black youth can adopt an entrepreneurial mindset at a young age, and I have been so lucky to mentor them. When I first got the call to be a STEAM mentor, I didn’t realize how much fun it would be! I’ve always had interests in sciences, tech, and art, so having a job that I’m passionate about is essential to me. This summer hasn’t let me down. I’ve met so many wonderful and kind people who all have their own special talents and are so eager to show the world what they have to give and to learn new things.

I myself certainly learned lots over the summer! I’ve learned how to let loose and enjoy myself while working with these activities, and I’ve also learned that some things just can’t be planned. And that’s ok! I find those moments are what keeps things interesting! It’s like Bob Ross said: “There are no mistakes, only happy accidents.”

Honestly, out of the whole job, the kids are what made it worth it. I always love to see the shyer kids come out of their shells, or the more independent ones learning to work as a team. The kids I’ve worked with this summer have inspired me to keep working hard and pursue my dreams. For example, there were a few who were amazing starting off with coding or design, but there were also ones who were brand new.

What was special to see was that, even if it was new and different to them, they never gave up! By the end, lots of kids were just as good as the others just because of their determination and devotion to learning.

In September I plan to go to NSCC to study IT programming and I can confidently say that I’ve learned some valuable skills that will help me move forward in my future career.

Not only did I grow on my previous knowledge of coding, but I also learned how to work with different types of technology and explore everything they had to offer, which will definitely aid me in

the future. All in all, it’s been such a blast working for Brilliant Labs as a STEAM mentor!!

It went from one day I was scrolling through job offerings on Canada Youth Job Bank and there were a few options, but none were really catching my interest so I kept checking up on the site every few weeks.

Then, finally, I see: “Summer Camp Counselor” I was so excited I hear so many stories about camp counselor jobs being such fun so I emailed and asked if there were any openings and the response I got back was something along the lines of “As of right now there are no; however, we will connect when there is”. I thought for sure there wasn’t going to be an opening, so I just went along with my days.

I was outside walking with my mom and brother, when I decided to check my email and there it was “we have an opening” I was so excited, I responded as fast as I could “ of course I'm still interested!”.

A few days go by, and I get an email about an interview over Google Meet, I accepted the invite and there I was the next day in the interview as nervous as can be. The interview went by fairly quickly and then I got information on my training which started the following week.

Everyone involved in the training was so welcoming and nice, especially the other mentors. I was so surprised in how welcoming everyone involved in Brilliant Labs was, it is absolutely a wonderful environment to work in.

BY: MARAT NAHIMANA, STEAM MENTOR I've been working as STEAM Mentor Brilliant Labs and I must say this summer job was the best one I’ve had the opportunity to land on. What other jobs can give you the chance to share these technologies with the youth especially for youth camps, Brilliant Labs is exactly that and much more.

In the beginning, I had a feeling this would only take place online, because BL didn’t have a site in the HRM region but that feeling quickly disappeared after the first week. Meeting my new coworkers was great too,

some already knew each other, I introduced myself, presentations were made and as each session went by, our group got closer, and our Provincial Director Sarah is doing her best to pair us up and alternate each week.

What I learned from these early sessions is that BL doesn’t only limit themselves to technology-based activities, we touch upon the topic of environment and nature, the kids get to be creative in their own kind of way with the equipment provided by BL.

I also learned how to use B.Boards and getting familiar with coding Micro:bits, LED lights, make music etc...I look forward to work at BL in the future, it’s a great charity organization and I would highly recommend it, I for example didn’t have a lot of knowledge in STEAM but I learned on the job and that’s what made it better.

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND BY: MADDY CLEMENTS, STEAM MENTOR My summer working with Brilliant Labs was one to remember. It was a summer filled with laughs and excitement, I cannot wait to do it again next year. We had a rocky start in PEI this year with very few staff to work with. However, Marcus and I were able to put on a great summer of camps. Our team dynamic was positive and uplifting and between two staff members, we were able to cover camps on all ends of the island.

With our backgrounds in sciences, we were very passionate about natural and biomaking. We focused on SDGs put in place to reduce pollution and waste as well as to help the land and water ecosystems. We were able to teach kids how to make paper using recycled paper and mushrooms picked from the ground. This series of camps focused on reducing waste and recycling materials which coincides with the SDG 12 responsible consumption and production. We focused on reducing waste generation through recycling and reuse. We also held a camp where we made our own leather using kombucha tea. Creating leather this way could

hopefully lead to an animal-friendly way of creating leather. This works well with the SDG 15 life on land as we could hopefully someday no longer need to use animal skins for leather.

My favorite camp challenge this summer was bottle Rocket Day. We cleaned up the planet by using recycled materials to design our bottle rockets and had an exhilarating day as the kids' minds were blown as the bottle rockets were launched. It is always a blast seeing their faces light up when the rockets take flight. It was even more rewarding to listen to a child explain the mechanics behind the bottle rockets and how the process works to another student perfectly.

Before Brilliant Labs, I didn’t know as much about the technology as I do now. Since joining, I have improved my technology skills dramatically. I now know how to do all the projects we do, as well, I have pushed myself to learn more about technology that I never knew before.

In the future I plan to pursue a career in medicine to help kids (Pediatrician). I truly find great joy in working with them and seeing them happily learning. Brilliant Labs has only confirmed my career choice! Each day this summer, I was excited to see what our STEAM camp kids would create and how they would react to the awesome projects that THEY have created! I really enjoyed being a Brilliant Labs STEAM Mentor!

Working at Brilliant Labs this summer as a STEAM Mentor has been nothing but an

amazing experience. I've enjoyed working with kids at various camps and teaching all kinds of technology and activities to the participants.

I've also learned a lot as well.

3D printing, micro-bits and b.Boards are just a few things I have learned and even taught to children. With a future in engineering, I certainly think these topics and skills are things that will be useful and will be skills I use for many years to come.

Finally, this summer I've observed and have taken away that "there is not one right way to do things".

Especially with coding everybody has their own way of doing things and I think it's so important that we allow everyone to be creative and free, and truly experiment to really learn in their own way.

Hello, my name is Elijah Burke. This summer I am working with Brilliant labs as a summer STEAM Mentor out of Keyin College ! Something fun we have done this summer so far is using the Makey-Makey with cardboard to create a game controller.

The kids are always resistant to leave and always come back and are excited to come back the next day. I really enjoy seeing the kids' faces light up when I show them something they didn't know.

Hello, I’m Connor Payne.

Ever since I was a child, I was fascinated by the world around me, I would always be asking questions about whatever I saw. My hunger for knowledge was insatiable. I was and still am a huge nerd, mostly from growing up on a healthy diet of Star Trek, Star Wars, and Tron. I, like many children, believed that computers were some kind of magic. When I learned that they weren't magic, that I could make a computer do things by sampling, telling them to do it, I became engrossed in learning how to program. From a mixture of online tutorials, experimenting and knowledge from my parents I learned how to program.

Now, from this kind of background you can understand that I obviously love this job and that the past few weeks have been amazing. Being able to help introduce tech and the scientific method to children who love learning feels like I'm paying it forward to those who taught me. When we aren't helping the children, we are working on personal projects, experimenting in 3d printing, and making new and exciting projects for the children.

This summer at Brilliant Labs as a summer STEAM mentor ,I have enjoyed every second of this job. I enjoy meeting new people and meeting all the kids and teaching them. I have learned how to use a 3D printer and a Makey Makey.

This job relates to my future job a lot because I am interested in technology as a future job.

One takeaway I have from this summer is that you need to think outside of the box.

You may be stuck or not sure what to do , but you can use creativity and try to make some other things, for example, during a camp one day, we created a new hot potato game, and the game was awesome, and the kids loved it. That is my one takeaway from this summer as a STEAM mentor.

The biggest takeaway from working as a STEAM Mentor this summer, is that you don't have to have prior knowledge to learn something. As long as you have the motivation, the drive, and the willingness to learn, you could achieve anything you put your mind to, at absolutely any age!

Hi, I’m Shania Rowlands.

This summer, I worked as a STEAM Mentor for Brilliant Labs, which has brought me so much enjoyment daily. We do different camps each day of the week, and each week we have a different activity picked. For example, we have shown the camps how to use Scratch, a Makey Makey, and 3D Printing. Scratch is a programming/coding software that allows kids to pick a character and background, and code them to move and make sounds with different commands. The Makey Makey kit teaches kids the basics of electricity and how a circuit has to be closed on both ends.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working at each and every camp, and it brings me so much joy to see the kids' faces light up with a smile when they learn something new, or get a question answered. To me, there is nothing more pure than a happy child with the resources to learn.

I am also a student at College Of The North Atlantic in the Architectural Engineering Technology program, and although this doesn't completely pertain to my course, it does use TinkerCAD for 3D printing, and I use AutoCAD for my schooling.

Both of these are owned by Autodesk.

This job was something I will never take for granted, and I thank each and everyone for this opportunity!

Hello I’m Hannah Vautier.

My time at Brilliant Labs so far has been very enjoyable; having so much access to cool, advanced technology is something I am incredibly grateful for — as well as the process of getting to learn new things everyday I come into work. And I can say that I’ve learned a lot so far this summer. Not just Scratch coding, Makey Makeys, Mirco:bits, b.Boards and 3D printing, but how I can help teach and be taught at the same time.

Everyone has different ways of thinking and becoming a Brilliant Labs STEAM Mentor has helped me understand that immensely. I’ve learned that sharing your thoughts, ideas, and knowledge is one

of the coolest things you can do, since those you teach get to take that information and use it as their own — in whatever way their imagination drives them to.

I’m super glad to take on this role because it helps me with my future career goal of being a an educator, and it helped me learn one very important thing this summer, if you're enjoying yourself it translates! Knowing that, I can happily say that all the students who participate with Brilliant Labs share my excitement too!

VIRTUAL STEAM CAMPS

The Brilliant Labs Virtual STEAM Summer Camps offered youth who could not be in-person the opportunity to explore science, math, cyber security, space exploration and more.
