Bring your creations to life: Learn why intellectual property matters -with André Gallant and Nicolas Déziel

April 6 at 1:30 p.m. ADT We are thrilled to announce our next speaker series session with André Gallant and Nicolas Déziel. This session will cover the following five different types of intellectual property (IP) rights: trademarks, copyrights, industrial designs, trade secrets and patents. From protecting your business name, logo or slogan to the information on your business website or secret internal information, to other ideas, artistic creations, inventions and innovations, IP rights are very important. This session is offered by Canadian Intellectual Property Office. This session is most relevant for Grade 6 and above.

INSPIRATION MAKER: Brilliant Labs Magazine APRIL 2023

This is the year of Brilliance! The greatest showcase of innovation and creativity is coming to you in May in the Greater Moncton area.

The event will be showcasing projects from the 4 Atlantic provinces where makers from community, industry and schools all come together to share the stories of their creations. These stories include the tools they used and the materials they manipulated to create their masterpieces. This, is a celebration not to be missed.

Brilliant Teaching and Learning A 3-day learning adventure for teachers worldwide

Brilliant Teaching and Learning is a global STEAM workshop that provides professional development for educators. Hosted by Brilliant Labs, a non-profit organization in Atlantic Canada, the workshop brings new ways to teach and learn with innovative technologies.

We invite experts from diverse disciplines to provide a meaningful experience for participants that can help them bring a positive change in students' lives. Focusing on both theory and practice, we will co-design quality learning experiences through handson, minds-on and hearts-on sessions.

APRIL 2023

Here at Lumsden Academy, in a combined class of Grades 7 - 9, our Junior High students are working in Design Teams that each consist of 4 members to find a solution to their identified world problems. Some challenges they are working on currently relate to clean ocean technology and assistive devices to help those with dexterity limitations.

Through the Design Process, we have really focused on the importance of including empathy in our design and how important it is for students to do their best to view a challenge from the perspective of the intended beneficiary of the creation. Students have created a Design Team Digital Portfolio either through Google Slides, Sites, or Book Creator, allowing them to document and share their progress and reflections. In their Design Teams, the students each take on lead roles such as Communication Leader, Engineer, etc., but also work collaboratively throughout. The primary design software they use is Tinkercad to create a 3D model of their design, with the plan to 3D print their prototypes and begin testing soon. Through the use of WeVideo and Canva, students will create promotional material for their product. At the end of the project, we will be inviting the school community to our gymnasium to share our creations and design journey in a mini maker faire.

Inspiration Maker

This year Brilliant Labs is looking for those teachers who inspire others to be their best and who are taking chances to try new things to educate students. We're pleased to share this Nova Scotia's "Inspiration Maker!"

WHO: STACEY CARTER SCHOOL: ÉCOLE CC LOUGHLIN SCHOOL TWITTERHANDLE: @MMECYYT As a life-long learner, Stacey Carter aims to foster fun and innovation in her classroom. As she develops as an educator, her focus has shifted to student engagement and empowerment.

Her goal is to help each student develop resilience and confidence through choice and self-exploration. The integration of technology is essential in achieving this goal. Students are able to express their learning in a way that works for them and develop into 21st Century learners. Students in Mme Carter’s Grade 3 class use their classroom Makerspace daily to express their creativity. They are currently working hard to develop their technological literacy by using Makey Makeys and Scratch to code their very own addition machines. Stacey truly believes that everyday as an educator is an adventure and she loves to learn along with her students.
