“My name is Chloe and I am 17 years old. I was home schooled from Kindergarten until 10th grade, then I began to attend New River Community College. So far I have kept a GPA of 4.0.I hope to continue to work hard and keep that score! Photography began as just a hobby at 10 years old when I received my first digital camera. But, now after 7 years it has become a passion of mine. I have been working at the Floyd Country Store for a year now and absolutely love my job and my coworkers. Because of work and school I have not had as much time to invest into my photography, but when I heard of the contest I was thrilled to take part in it. One evening I went on a road trip and tried to capture Wills Ridge from every spot possible in Floyd County. It was thrilling and quite the adventure! I love to travel as well and bring my Nikon with me. Last year I visited Guatemala on a mission trip and was constantly snapping pictures.

I feel like so much beauty is around us all, we just have to stop and take a moment to enjoy it. So that is what I try to do. To capture the things people seem to overlook or take for granted in our daily lives. The Jingle Tap Cafe The Floyd Country Store is a famous venue for authentic Appalachian music and dancing, a tradition that has thrived over the years. It is also a fun place to shop, with a wealth of practical and quirky products on the shelves.

Now the store is increasingly being recognized for the delicious food available at THE JINGLE TAP CAFÉ the lunch and deli counter. The Jingle Tap looks like a simple countrystyle sandwich counter, but holds an unexpected touch of sophistication. The secret is that the store makes almost everything inhouse and sources seasonal locally grown salads and vegetables from its own organic farm, Riverstone Organic Farm, and other local growers. While the store features some classic American favorites like grilled cheese sandwiches and BLTs, many of the recipes such as the market salad plates and glutenfree quiche are developed with diet and health, as well as taste, in mind.

The Jingle Tap Café is essentially a lunch café, serving homemade soups, fresh salads, sandwiches and specials, such as beef chili and rice or chicken potpie, from 11:00am to 3:00pm, with a lighter menu available anytime the store is open. During the Friday Night Jamboree there is a special Jamboree menu including hot dogs, Brunswick stew, soup and sandwiches. The ice-cream counter and bakery case always have plenty to offer too.

Customers order at the counter and find a booth or table in the store. On the weekends, lunch is often accompanied by music, so some of the tables are set in front of the stage except during the Friday Night Jamboree . Every Saturday from noon to 3:00pm is Americana Afternoon featuring the full range of Americana music such as blues, country bluegrass and folk. Many fine local musicians 8

participate and the stage often attracts musicians passing through the area on tour. On Sundays there is a traditional music jam from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. On the first and third Sundays old-time musicians and dancers gather together and on the second, fourth and fifth Sundays the bluegrass community takes their turn. Each jam is run circle style, with a coordinator keeping things moving.

Visiting old-time or bluegrass players are welcome to join in. It’s fun to watch and a great time to pick up a hand-dipped ice cream sundae or a slice of home-baked pie.

The Jingle Tap Café also sells deli food to go, from a container of delicious chicken salad all prepared and ready to take home or order for a buffet spread to feed a crowd.

With advance notice the store can provide whole quiches, trays of mac and cheese or potpie and other menu items to take home.

This season sees the introduction of the Jingle Tap Picnic.

Enjoy a selection of savory and sweet foods packed to go and suitable for your picnic basket. The picnics, designed for two, include bottled juices; the disposable tableware needed and come complete with a map of good local picnic spots.

And the name? A jingle tap is the two-piece tap the pro dancers wear on their shoes to make the jingling sound you’ll hear out on the dance floor. The country store and the café are proud of the rich Appalachia tradition that is celebrated with music and dance at the store every weekend.

The store is open 7 days a week from Memorial Day until New Years day, and closed on Mondays for the rest of the year.

Local Minister Wins Wedding Award

Rev. Kanta Bosniak is the recent winner of the Wedding Wire Couples’ Choice Awards for 2014, as determined by reviews from past clients. The award recognizes her business as amongst the top 5% of wedding professionals nationwide.

Bosniak specializes in personalized and meaningful ceremonies. “I love to create custom ceremonies that reflect the bride and groom as individuals, as a couple and that celebrate their love story,” she says. In addition, Bosniak taps her talents as an author and artist in unique perks she offers her wedding couples. A prolific writer in the mind/body/spirit and inspirational genre, she has published twentytwo books and audiobooks.

“I officiate many weddings for ‘spiritual/not religious’ couples,” she explained. And I found a need for readings that work for these couples. I love the oft-used quote on marriage by Khalil Gibran, and I wanted to provide additional resources. All four of my books of original sacred love poetry, Love Poems, Awakened Love, Twin Flames, and Sacred Love contain poems that can serve as wedding readings, as well as whimsical illustrations and classic love quotes by authors such as Rumi and Hafiz.

I made the fifth love-themed book, The Love is Everywhere Coloring Book to serve, like the other four in the Love Collection as a fun romantic gift, and I give each couple a 14

I love receiving notes from brides who’ve framed the certificates and tell me they serve as happy reminders of their special day. It feels like such a blessing to me to have contributed.”

Floyd Artists Association Offers Many Activities

The Floyd Artists Association was founded in 2007 with six members that had painted together in the Floyd Figures Drawing Group, some for many years. They were first located as the first tenants in the newly-renovated space under the Sun Music Hall and their business name was “Art Under The Sun”.

Subsequently, they coincidentally became the first tenants in the newly-renovated Station just across the street, opposite the Floyd Country Store. They have continued to grow and now have more than 17 members. They operate as a cooperative gallery, with each member putting in work time on supportive activities and “manning the store”.

The gallery has continued to offer classes and space to guest artists.

Their opening receptions for the guest artists include refreshments, as well as extensive publicity for the artist. Many have benefited from this opportunity to find public exposure and recognition. They come from many of our surrounding counties and their work hangs for one month in the gallery.

First Friday receptions are held each month to celebrate the opening of a guest artist exhibit at the gallery. Hours are 5-8 pm and refreshments are served. The public is welcome to attend.

“Our Mission is to support and promote artists of Floyd County and contribute to the creative arts culture of Floyd by providing a downtown, professional setting that fosters creativity, quality art and interaction between artists, patrons and the public.”

FAA is currently developing programs to support the Floyd County public school art programs and in February, the gallery featured the work of two talented high school seniors as guest artists.

Many of the FAA artists have exhibited their work throughout the Southwest Virginia region. The gallery will be providing exhibits in the Bent Mountain Bistro and Tuggles Gap beginning in March.

In addition, they are working out arrangements with a venue in Roanoke where FAA artists will be exhibiting their paintings.

There are many opportunities at the gallery to take classes from qualified members in various media. Ron Campbell has offered many of his popular pen and ink drawing series and will continue to do so in the future.

Karen Sewell continues to hold her popular “Anything Goes” classes every Wednesday afternoon from noon until 2:00. She teaches students to work in all media and provides them individual instruction as well. In addition, she is currently offering a 6-week course meeting each Wednesday from 2:00pm to 4:00pm entitled “Perspective, Value and Composition”, covering drawing basics.

Gretchen St. Lawrence has held several classes on the basics of pastels. FAA hopes to expand on the number and types of classes that are scheduled. High School Art

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” - Pablo Picasso

Floyd is about creativity; especially expressed in music and art, but also creative problem solving. Even though countless studies have shown that students that participate in the arts have fewer behavior problems and do better academically, art departments budgets are usually the first to get cut. So what to do when the high school art program is struggling with yet another budget cut?

Musician and artist, Jenny Traynham posed the question to the Floyd Artists Association and they rose to the challenge.

During the summer months, the members of the Floyd Artists Association located in The Station across from the Floyd Country Store, will be working to raise funds for art supplies for the Floyd County High School. Since the mission of the Floyd Artists Association is to support and promote artists of Floyd County and contribute to the creative arts culture of Floyd, the co-op of artists will be helping in a variety of ways.

A contribution Coin Can will be put on the desk in the Floyd Artists Association, so that the community and visitors can support the arts in the high school. Each artist from the FAA will be contributing a portion of their sales. And each first Friday of June, July & August, FAA will be accepting donations of art supplies to go to the high school art department, so artists around Floyd can help by contributing art supplies they no longer use. Pin Up Day in Floyd

Being a native Virginian and having been born and raised in the ever growing city of Lynchburg, it’s easy to get “used” to the sites and overlook the beauty that is around me in this state’s vast terrain. As all people sometimes do, even I become involved in life, following a typical hurry up and wait routine. Seventeen months ago, my family and I moved from Richmond to the small city of Blue Ridge, VA nestled by the Blue Ridge Parkway, just outside of Roanoke. Since moving to the Roanoke area, I’ve seen many vast differences in culture and scenery.

As a child, I began capturing the scenery of Virginia with a simple point and shoot camera. I always looked for new places to take pictures. I quickly discovered that adding a person suddenly brought the scenery to life. The beauty along and around the Blue Ridge Parkway offers a way of life filled with hiking, biking and overlooks that span miles, the breathtaking views speak for itself. With my love for capturing beauty and people, I have continually grown and a passion for new forms of expressing my art, always come to life. With new forms of expressing my art, I’m always striving, always exploring new ways of capturing people.

One of my newest passions is Pin Up photography. Pin Up has been rapidly trending in the arts world and is another way to bring life and beauty from the 1940’s and 1950’s into modern times. When thinking of Pin Up , big beautiful cars from the era quickly come to mind.

Networking and referrals are a mainstream way to establish business and make connections and through networking I met a fabulous makeup artist, Melinda Lawson Cumbee. Soon I was offered an introduction to a local of Floyd County, Johnny Dalton of Dalton’s Auto Restoration. His love for restoring those massive metal cars of yesterday inspired a collaboration. We set up a day to shoot pin up and so my adventure to Floyd County began.

As I drove on interstate 81, around the hustle of bustle of Christiansburg and Blacksburg, I listened closely to my GPS, as not to miss a turn. The noises of the city were quickly diminishing as I was suddenly hit with a sense of awe. As I looked around, I felt as if I had taken a step back in time, to a time free of the confines of city life. The rustic feel of the farm lands and the mountains were hair raising. Every turn brought a new view. Every view as interesting 24

and impressive as the next.

Upon arriving in downtown Floyd, Main Street had a rustic charm and felt Mayberry friendly. The friendly personalities and southern charm of the locals only enhance the small town feel in Floyd. Speak with a local in Floyd, and it’s easy to see the love and passion for its community.

Pin Up day was perfect, and what a collaboration. Pretty girls often bring attention, but add beautiful cars and it’s a hit. The cars, the people, and the models, made a perfect day even better. When moving locations, the scenery and roads became more winding and nestled. Soon we passed one of Floyd’s gems, Mabry Mill.

Tucked neatly in the Blue Ridge Pkwy, Mabry Mill, which was built in 1910, is known for its beauty, as well as a look back to pioneer life. Mabry Mill is so beautiful, that it’s not surprisingly, one of the most photographed spots along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Of course, in the back of my mind, I was considering whom I could capture in front of it with my camera.

The country restaurant adjacent to the Mill offers some tasty country cooking, that is well worth the wait! The country steak was delicious, but please don’t tell my mom. The walks around the Mill and the restaurant bring a sense of calm and peace. It’s well worth the visit.

The next shooting location was a hit, and many locals came to watch the shoot. It was thrilling to say the least! As the day came to a close, my trip back to Roanoke was filled with thoughts of coming back to Floyd and capturing some of the old buildings, or beautiful landscapes that were endless.

Shooting Pin Up adventures with the beautifully restored cars by Johnny Dalton hasn’t ended. Our most recent project was a classic 2014 Pin Up Calendar for Dalton’s Auto Restoration, featuring beautiful girls and cars from the 1940’s to the 1970’s.

Floyd has become a staple in my work and I hope to continue the travels and enjoy more of its vast beauty for recreation, and perhaps I will just leave my camera behind. Or not.

Johnny Dalton is the owner of Dalton Auto Restoration here in Floyd County. Johnny built his Better Business Bureau A rated business upon a long history of hard work and service both to his country and his customers. Johnny says, “I took my first motor apart when I was 8 years old with my father, Roger Leon Dalton, who taught me mechanical and body work over the years until I graduated in 1987 from Floyd County High School.” Johnny worked odd jobs around Floyd County until the Air Force came calling; he entered the service as a 17 year old in 1987. Johnny spent the majority of his career as an Aircraft Mechanic. Johnny loved his time in the service, but he would never forget his dream of coming back to Floyd County to again partner with his dad to restore old relics back to their glory days.

Johnny eventually retired from the Air Force after 20 years of service in May 2007 and his father was there to see him retire.

Since opening the business in 2007, he has restored over 50 cars as well as bought and sold an additional 300 cars. Among many accolades, his restoration efforts were recognized with a Gold Award from the Roanoke Valley Mustang Club for a 1970 Boss 302 in 2012, a Gold Award from the Mustang Club of America for a 1968 Shelby Mustang in 2013, a 1st Place Prime Steel Car Show in Grand Forks North Dakota for a 1958 Ford Retractable in 1999, and a Commander’s Choice Award for a 1969 Mustang in Grand Forks North Dakota in 2003. Johnny’s love for cars shows through in every product coming off the line and since most of his business comes from word of mouth, it’s naturally essential he provide an excellent service.

Chantilly Farm Sees Continued Growth Situated among the rolling hills of southeastern Floyd County is one of the fastest growing outdoor event venues in the region. In fact, it was only three years ago that Chantilly Farm hosted its first event on the nearly 200 acre property located off Franklin Pike.

“We’ve had so much ongoing support from the community and have received overwhelmingly positive feedback on every event that we’ve hosted here,” said the venue’s lead promoter, Jason Gallimore.

From weddings and smaller private events to large scale music festivals, the picturesque site located two miles off the Blue Ridge Parkway, is rapidly generating interest from not only those in Floyd County, but from event goers in surrounding areas as well.

The venue’s signature event is no doubt their annual Chantilly Farm Bluegrass & BBQ Festival held over Memorial Day weekend each May. The festival brings together some of the most award winning bands in bluegrass music with arts and craft vendors, a popular children’s area, kite flying, camping, and there’s even an antique tractor show.

In addition to the bluegrass festival, Chantilly Farm has hosted a wide variety of public events including: the annual Floyd Auto Fair, Floyd Oktoberfest, scouting camp-outs, outdoor film events, and live concerts.

“We had more than 1,000 people on a rainy Saturday at last year’s Floyd Auto Fair and it’s really exciting to see how homegrown events like these can take off so quickly. We hosted vendors and attendees from as far away as Georgia and New York, nearly all of them ended up falling in love with Floyd County,” added Gallimore.

In the coming year, the venue has plans to add additional RV camping spaces, complete with full hook-ups and a certified dump station. A bathhouse for campers is currently under construction and work continues on further developing wooded hiking and biking trails throughout the property.

Virginia’s Blue Ridge Music Festival

Mark your calendars now, for an exciting weekend of classical music, as Virginia’s Blue Ridge Music Festival returns to Floyd after a successful 11 day inaugural season last summer. Artistic director, David Stuart Wiley, has planned a varied and exciting three day weekend, June 6-8, which includes something for even the youngest music lovers.

Organizers, participants, and patrons alike were delighted with the sounds and success of the 2013 Music Festival. VBRMF Board Vice President, Barbara von Claparede, recalls with delight the feast for the senses that the festival presented everyone involved, from the outdoor performance of Handel’s Water Music timed perfectly with the sunset, to the final performance, Elgar’s “Enigma” Variations, which brought almost everyone to tears in the huge gym of Floyd High School, including the musicians.

Festival organizers hope to create many new special memories with the upcoming programs.

The fun will begin Friday night, June 6 at 6:30 pm at the Artisan Market in Floyd. This night of informal ensemble music will feature several 2013 fellows, and is free and open to all.

Saturday, June 7 begins with a family affair. The Family Concert: “Baroque to Billy Joel” will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Floyd EcoVillage. David Stuart Wiley, along with three other musicians, will trace the roots of recent popular music back to Bach, Classical, and Ragtime.

Saturday evening, June 7, is the Gala Concert and Reception.

Also at the Floyd EcoVillage, this concert begins at 6:30 p.m. You won’t want to miss this extraordinary evening. An indoor concert will feature Concertmaster Akemi Takayama and composer & mandolin virtuoso, Jeff Midkiff playing selections from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Piazzolla’s fiery Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, Midkiff ’s new Double Concerto for Mandolin and Violin, and much more. Following a wine and food reception, the music will resume outdoors with a “Sunset Serenade” featuring the Blacksburg Community Band, under the direction of VBRMF Board President, Jay Durner.

Sunday, June 8 features an afternoon concert entitled “Art & Music in the Mountains”. A chamber orchestra under the direction of Maestro David Stewart Wiley will present Dvorak’s beloved Serenade for Winds and Strings, Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro Overture, and Beethoven’s Octet Finale. This concert will take place at the Floyd EcoVillage and will feature several 2013 Fellows.

Floyd Fest 2014

The roughly 15,000 person population of the county of Floyd, Virginia, doubles annually in late July with the onset of its namesake celebration of music and art, set to its scenic rural backdrop. FloydFest, in its thirteenth incarnation, has become a nationally-recognized event, drawing a crowd of enthusiastic nature-loving music aficionados from all quadrants of the US, with the largest concentration from the Eastern sea board, and particularly Virginia, Maryland, the Carolinas and Florida.

Situated on a breathtakingly beautiful 80 acre plateau, its location at milepost 170.5 off the Blue Ridge Parkway provides a noticeably non-commercial environment for the outdoor music festival, which has grown from its humble beginnings in 2002 to include no less than ten unique stages, hosting nearly 100 total musical acts over its lengthy five day duration. Traveling the Parkway, America’s longest linear National Park, the journey to the festival is a visual buildup to the experience. The road from both Northern and Southern directions wind through miles of uninterrupted lush, verdant deciduous and evergreen forests before visitors are treated to the impressive site of the event grounds, with a huge landscaped treble clef and a timber framed pavilion highlighting the entranceway to what has become a beloved ‘musical reunion’ of sorts, for artists and attendees alike.

FloydFest 13, this year dubbed ‘Revolutionary,’ both for its singularly heavyhitting line-up as well as its annual logistical improvements, self-assessments and reinventions, will take place July 23rd-27th, with the option of a Monday, July 28th departure for those visiting attendees opting to ease back into the real world at a slower pace. The 5-day course of FloydFest not only packs an intense musical punch, it offers myriad of other options for those looking to shop from regional artisans, taste from a unique array of food vendors, sample from fine craft beers and regional wines, enjoy a relaxing massage or more participatory healing arts class or workshop, relax in an ENO hammock or sign on for an outdoor adventure. These adventures range from guided road bike tours to offcampus river floats. Moreover, if you’re concerned about the ‘carbon footprint’ of your summer vacation, you can relax a bit in the knowledge that FloydFest is about as green as music festivals come; in 2013 the event recycled 10.4 tons of material, created 9 tons of compost, and saved over 200,000 plastic water bottles over three years of offering free water in commemorative Klean Kanteen stainless steel cups. 10 unique stage areas and descriptions: The Dreaming Creek Main Stage is the ‘signature stage’ at FloydFest. Locally designed and constructed in partnership with Dreaming Creek Timber Frame, there is no other way or place to see a live outdoor performance after experiencing the beauty of the natural tree-lit backdrop behind and of framing this one-of-a-kind timber framed main stage.

The Streamline Stage at Hill Holler rivals the Dreaming Creek stage as a ‘fan favorite’ and sits at the base of a natural amphitheater with hillside seating and an overlooking ‘’craft beer loft.” Boasting its own unique woodsy aesthetic, the Hill Holler stage hosts headlining acts throughout the day and well into the night.

The She-Sha Tent sits just atop the Hill Holler amphitheater, doubling, in its colorful Persian decor, as an ‘art installation’ and showcases musical performances

by HuDost, yoga classes, aerial workshops, belly dance workshops, Kirtan’s calland-response chanting, hoop workshops and artist panel discussions. Plus, stop by Friday and Saturday evening for a ‘Revolution-wear’ fashion show! The Healing Arts Area provides an opportunity to create and maintain a body-mind balance amidst the full-throttle intensity of a 5-day music festival. Showcasing a smorgasboard of various healing tools and techniques, with hands-on demonstrations and workshops, plus one-on-one appointment opportunities with trained professionals, all in and around, the lovely ‘She-Sha’ tent- a handsomely decorated Persian-style installation that’s new in 2014!

The Workshop Porch does more than replicate the look of an old Appalachian-style porch, it is one! Recycled from a ‘local deconstruction,’ the Workshop Porch is hosted by Ferrum College and offers an intimate listening environment as well as opportunity to engage with musicians as they share songs, stories and techniques in a hosted, workshop-style environment.

The Sugarlands Shine Speakeasy Stage is FloydFest’s ‘wild hair’; in alternating year’s this huge covered tent with its funky painted wood floor has been home to everything from clogging workshops to late night getdown stay-downs with FloydFest’s favorite funk bands, to dare devilish acts of magic, sword-swallowing and burlesque! New in 2014, FloydFest is excited to welcome Sugarlands Distilling Company, mixing and shaking Appalachia’s favorite spirits. The Sugarlands Shine Speakeasy stage will host more musical performances with an even bigger dance space this year and is guaranteed to get you moving and grooving!

Relax at a table under the shade of huge beautiful oak trees with a cold craft beer or freshly-mixed sangria and catch your favorite newly-discovered band on this lively, funky stage, pieced together over a decade ago from the discarded steel and timber of the roller-coaster from the long-gone Lakeside amusement park in Salem, VA. Living history!

The Children’s Universe (CU) Forever Young Stage offers delightful respite from the hustle and hum of elsewhere on campus, and features acts ranging from grown-ups playing catchy kid tunes to very talented kids playing with adult-level aptitude. Plus, catch your favorite young ‘uns at daily open mic sessions!

At FloydFest, kids are never an afterthought- they are a centerpiece. The aptly-named Children’s Universe encompasses several acres of prime real estate in FloydFest’s main field area, such that kids can engage in a Taekwondo class, a tetherball match, or debut an act during the kids’ Open Mic, and parent’s aren’t missing their favorite set on the Dreaming Creek Main Stage.

The Imagine Tent Stage: The Teen Scene is hosted by Inward Bound Mindfulness Education (iBme), a Floyd-area non-profit dedicated to helping young people experience a deeper sense of connection and belonging with themselves, others and the natural world. The Teen Scene Lounge provides teens with a place of their own that is comfortable, safe and fun, and where they can participate in a number of activities, including collage journaling, Juggling Dojo Classes, mindfulness activities such as Qi Gong and meditation, or simply relax in the ‘Chill Zone’ with couches and snacks.

The ENO Global Village Stage: Take a journey into a spirit world inspired by the Mayan Dance Party in the Yucatán. In 2014 the Global Village transforms into a Mayan journey, with each evening featuring a film in full 5.1 surround sound and ambient lighting to awaken the senses. Following the film, a live DJ will take the stage morphing the scene into a blissful dance party, with complimentary animal masks (while supplies last) and face painting to tap into your wild side!

The Backstage VIP Pub Stage is off-limits without a backstage pass, but is no-holds-barred for those with the right credentials! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be crackin’ peanuts and sipping complimentary beverages in the shade of this comfortable lounge tent while hearing your favorite artists play old favorites and test run new material on this rustic stage just across the room. Outdoor Adventure options: For those who need to get out and ‘shake a leg’ even outside the 5-day dance marathon, there’s no shortage of ways to engage with the beautiful countryside that borders FloydFest. The Moon Stomper Hiking Trail is a lovely, short do-able walkabout that circles the festival grounds. For a more in-depth walking experience, try the Osprey Guided Hikes along the Blue Ridge.

Or check out a free mountain bike rental from Roanoke’s Starlight Bicycles and enjoy FloydFest’s onsite one mile intermediate-level trail, and conclude by signing up for the Sunday race! If you’re serious about your mountain-bikingwhile-waiting-for-the-music-to-start, try signing up for the Belcher Mountain Beat Down! Through a partnership with Pembroke, Va. based Tangent Outdoors and the Moonstompers Bike Club, FloydFest offers a guided mountain bike tour that descends the Blue Ridge and finishes with miles of hand-built single-track trail. The 16-mile route includes 1700’ of elevation gain and 3500’ of descending.

Trips include a 45-minute shuttle (via school bus and 15 passenger van) from the festival to the Little River, 2.5 to 3 hours on the water, and a fully catered lunch with local produce and all the sides and fixins! Wildwood Farms is owned by Robert and Judy Bowman. It’s a family owned and operated business. We have had the daylily garden since 1999 and decided a General Store would be a great edition to our business. We had our grand opening on April 13, 2013. We built a quaint music venue in the General Store as a tribute to our Mom Ethel and our Step Dad George, whom we lost in 2012. They truly loved music. We offer music events on a weekly basis, on Saturdays and regularly scheduled live music sessions on the first and third Sunday of every month, as well as special event dates.

We added “Mama’s Pantry” in October of 2013 and offer a selection of foods including bulk candy, country ham and side meat, Virginia canned jams, jellies, and preserves. We also offer gluten-free mixes and gluten-free foods. We have organic olive oil and organic chocolate, Virginia grown nuts, and a great selection of bulk dried beans. We are also able to create custom gift baskets for that special person or occasion. We offer a large selection of garden flags, matmates, and yard designs! We have a gypsy garden line that has become very popular with all ages! We will be offering plants and annuals in the spring, along with some garden vegetables. We are offering garden supplies, unique garden gifts, and home décor. We have locally made baskets, hand turned bowls, and jewelry.

We have a large selection of wind chimes, many are made in the USA. We also have some great skin care products such as shea butter that is made in the USA and cruelty free. We carry great lace products, called Heritage Lace, that is made in NC. We also carry Habersham candle products that are made in GA. We are looking forward to the spring and summer where we will have the daylily bloom season and regularly scheduled antique car CRUISE-IN’s with music for entertainment.

We grow around 2,000 varieties and typically offer around 600 varieties of daylilies on our price list every year. We have a pergola to rest from the hot summer sun, and we added a lovely patio when we built the store. It is a very comfortable place for one to relax or take a rest after browsing through the flowers. We envison the area being used for garden club meetings, lunches, etc. We also offer landscaping and mowing services year round. Open seven days a week!

January 27th marked the start of the Year of the Horse in the Chinese calendar, and the Blue Ridge Center for Chinese Medicine in Pilot, Virginia is honoring the gifts of the horse this year by forging a deeper connection to the land and helping us reclaim our natural strength and vitality.

Tucked into the forest near the Floyd/Montgomery county line, the Blue Ridge Center for Chinese Medicine, or BRCCM, is a non-profit center that offers comprehensive and complementary health care to the surrounding community. The main building is awash with natural lighting and gentle, calming energy. Four clinical care rooms with hardwood floors and high ceilings look out onto pastures and woods behind the center.

As horses peacefully nibble the grass, their hooves link their hearts to the land. This year BRCCM is deepening that vital connection by expanding their Chinese medicinal herb production program. Developing economic opportunities for regional farmers is the goal of the program as well as supplying reliably sourced high-quality herbs for Chinese medicines for regional and national distribution. On March 15th and 16th, just in time for spring planting, leading Chinese medicine herbalist and grower Jean Giblette will host workshops for local farmers and others interested in learning about the medical benefits and growing needs of these herbs .

replenish our natural balance by offering classes in grounding and strengthening mind/body practices such as internal martial arts for health including taiji, qigong, plus yoga and playshops.

People of all ages travel from near and far to explore alternative approaches to issues such as chronic conditions, addiction, injuries, and aging. BRCCM’s highly trained practitioners work with each individual to support an effective personal path to healing, offering a wide range of therapeutic options such as acupuncture, herbs, and bodywork including Tuina and Thai massage. This year the center is also offering classes and practitioner continuing education courses in fermenting foods, holistic animal companion care, Chinese food therapy, and pre- and post-natal wellness.

Just as horses band together, so the staff and supporters of The Blue Ridge Center for Chinese Medicine work as one to strengthen their community.

The non-profit center relies on financial donations to sustain its services, as well as volunteers who help with tasks ranging from stacking firewood to repairing computers. The center offers low-cost acupuncture clinics and donation-funded subsidized care so that quality health care is available for everyone. In this Year of the Horse, let’s remember that each step toward individual wholeness helps create a more resilient, more supportive community for all.

Something Old, Something New, Scott Perry & 3 Shades of Blue

To the uninitiated, Floyd County’s musical identity might appear to be based solely on the old-time, bluegrass and gospel music that rings through the downtown streets during the Friday Night Jamboree. However, a walk up or down Main Street reveals that there is an astonishing variety of music being played, and played well, by a large community of talented local musicians of all ages. One of the newest and youngest groups, 3 Shades of Blue, recently recorded and released “In the Beginning;” a CD that reflects the county’s (and indeed this country’s), rich musical mix.

The band grew out of a three student ensemble studying at my lesson studio at the Jacksonville Center for the Arts. Having learned to read music and been taught the basics of theory and harmony, I began providing instruction in soloing technique, repertoire development, ensemble playing and jamming etiquette. In just a few months the group had assembled an impressive repertoire of blues, jazz, country and rock while developing a tight swinging sound as both rhythm players and soloists. After performing at several local events they decided to “go legit” and form a bona fide band. When the trio asked me to join and front the band, I couldn’t resist.

In addition to helping mentor these talented players on the finer points of booking and performing live shows, I really enjoy their youthful enthusiasm, energy and most of all, their fine musicianship.

The group includes guitarists Dylan Vest (14) and Jared Richardson (13) who are eighth graders at Floyd County High School and home schooled violinist Laurel Brooke (17). Dylan has studied with me for all of the nine years I’ve been teaching in the county and favors gospel, blues and country tunes. Jared started lessons with other local instructors, like Dylan, at the age of six. He has been studying with me for six or seven years and enjoys playing blues and rock tunes. Laurel started her musical journey on the piano, taking lessons from her mom, local piano teacher Jennifer Brooke. She took up the violin under the tutelage of Mike

Mitchell. She began studying with me about a year ago when she joined the ensemble group. Although classical music is her first love, that is followed very closely by the group’s jazz repertoire.

The disc, which was recorded and mixed at Joseph Dejarnette’s Studio 808, reflects the group’s diverse live sets and includes jazz standards like “Autumn Leaves” and Duke Ellington’s “Caravan“ as well as gypsy jazz tunes like Django Reinhardt’s “Minor Swing” and “Sweet Georgia Brown.” “Tennessee Waltz” and a hidden track, “Mama Don’t ‘Low,” reflect the band’s country side, while classic rock tunes “Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone” and “Walk Don’t Run” (a tune actually composed by jazz guitarist Johnny Smith) represent their rock and roll repertoire. The group also created two original blues tunes, the minor-tinged “Heaping Helping of Blues” and a high-energy rocker called “Truckin’ the Blues.” Engineer Dejarnette also added his talents on upright bass on a few tracks.

Despite the eclectic mix of musical styles, the disc provides a very enjoyable listen with a very pleasing transition from song to song.

The disc was recorded live with all the players sitting in a circle in the same room miked individually and with a few room mic’s placed strategically to capture the sessions’ energy. All the tracks were recorded in one to three takes and mixed with very little editing, some with none at all. The disc was mastered at Tom Ohmsen’s Flat 5 studio. Tom is also my bandmate in Front Porch Swing (a trio I also front), and was very impressed with the performances and recording quality and added his professional polish to the final product. The band paid for the entire project with money earned playing live shows throughout the county and the New River and Roanoke Valleys.

The project also earned high praise from my teacher, world class guitarist and educator Frank Vignola, who after hearing a few cuts responded, “You all sound great! I’d like to record at that studio!”

When I asked the group what they most enjoyed about being in a band they all expressed how much they like playing with each other and the interaction of individual styles that results in the band’s overall sound.

They also expressed their appreciation for supportive families and the encouragement of the audiences who have been attending their shows.

Each noted that learning new material and approaches and playing it together and for others was a lot of fun. When I asked them what was most challenging about playing in a group, Jared noted that each player has their own opinions and that all must be considered before making decisions by consensus. Laurel stated, “listening to each other and playing strong rhythm for someone else to solo over was demanding.” Dylan’s answer mirrored those of both bandmates observations. Of the band’s many performing experiences they noted that among their favorites where performing on stage with Frank Vignola and Vinny Raniolo at the Jefferson Center’s Djangoary event and a December show at Dogtown Roadhouse for a large and enthusiastic crowd. When asked about what role music might play as they got older, all three said they intend to be lifelong musicians and performers. Dylan added that he hopes the band plays and records more while Jared and Laurel indicated they planned on studying music in college.

The disc was released at a sold out April 4th show at the June Bug Center’s Black Box Theater and can be purchased at my studio, the Floyd Country Store, noteBooks and many other local shops and at any of the many live shows we have scheduled through the summer and fall.

Young Life

It is with pride and anticipation that we inform the community of ProjectFloyd! Because of Floyd Young Life’s broad participation and support, we decided to find a service to broadly benefit the community.

Thus was born the idea for a multigenerational, multidisciplinary annual community-wide service day: ProjectFloyd, May 10, 2014. We are now looking to the community for project requests.

Modeled after Virginia Tech’s “Big Event,” we’ve already begun the planning for local builders, landscapers and community members to direct teams of adults and teens in local service work projects, including spring yard work, painting, house cleaning, car washing, recycling, gardening, landscaping, cleaning/organizing, window washing, administration needs (data entry, shredding, etc) and small building projects. Our goal is 50 projects and over 200 volunteers all giving back to Floyd!

One of Young Life’s purposes is to get kids to think about their time and lives selflessly and learn to give their energy and resources to serve others. By partnering youth with local adults, we hope to foster

intergenerational relationships so that they will enter adulthood with a desire to serve others and give back to their community, while having experience in building relationships with adults. A goal of 200 volunteers will include Young Life youth and parents, civic and social organizations, sport teams, school clubs, churches, nonprofits and other community groups. Our long-term goal is that this ongoing yearly event would help nurture the value of helping our neighbors year round and establish volunteer spirit to the next generation in Floyd.

Floyd Young Life is excited to give back and help keep Floyd the special place it is to so many. That is why we are calling on the community for ideas and needs! Award-Winning Green Builder

Award-winning green builder and designer, Adam Cohen has a special feel for Floyd County. He and his wife lived in the county from 1984 – 1999 when they moved to a Roanoke neighborhood particularly well suited for their three sons. Now, Cohen, a managing partner in Structures Design/Build of Roanoke is looking forward to bringing his passion for sustainable living, his expertise in Passivhaus technology (considered world-wide the most energy efficient building technology) and his longtime love of Floyd together by joining forces with Floyd’s Jubilee Cohousing to create an all-Passivhaus, cohousing community in the Needmore Lane area of Floyd, close to town. In one of his first meetings with Jubilee, Cohen lamented, “Where was Floyd cohousing when our kids were little?”

Plans are for Jubilee Cohousing’s thirty-three residences and Common House to be closely clustered on about seven of the community’s thirty-eight mostly wooded acres. Jubilee, probably also Floyd’s first condominium community, anticipates building out all at once starting in 2015. Currently, Jubilee members and Structures Design/Build (SDB) are approaching site plan, Common House and unit design issues with the goal of having the neighborhood layout, the Common House plan and a limited number of unit floor plans to choose from fully drawn up by the end of 2014.

Passivhaus building technology (not to be confused with Passive Solar) was originally born in North America in the 1970s. It lost steam here when consumers perceived that the energy crisis of that day had passed. German engineers picked up the challenge and took the standard to a very high level of energy efficiency by developing better ways to insulate structures and by eliminating troublesome thermal bridges, including those in windows and doors. The super insulated, super tight nature of the buildings is augmented by a low-cost, low-tech heat exchanger which moderates incoming air during peak heating and cooling seasons.

Someone once said, “Architecture is inhabited sculpture.” Cohen, who not surprisingly is also a gifted sculptor in metal and stone, has been enthusiastically studying and teaching inhabited sculpture of the green variety everywhere he goes. He has presented papers at both National and International Passivhaus Conferences, taught classes in advanced commercial Passivhaus design at several Passivhaus conferences, was an invited speaker at Better Build Ireland, and last year’s keynote speaker for the Passive House Northeast Conference. Additionally, Cohen has painstakingly educated himself about cohousing, and educated cohousers around the nation about Passivhaus.

Design (CEED) which is part of the Franklin Co. School System, Passivhaus Dental in Roanoke, the Malcolm Rosenberg Hillel Center at Virginia Tech, and the 2013 Green Builder Mainstream Green Home of the Year in Thaxton, VA. This is an 1,800 sq. ft. Passivhaus home with total energy costs averaging $40 per month.

“What if it didn’t cost any more to build and operate an energyefficient house? Would you rather spend your money on equity or electricity?” Cohen asks prospective clients, many of whom have the mistaken impression that Passivhaus homes cost significantly more than standard construction.

“Jubilee has the opportunity to demonstrate to the region the future of both planned communities and construction.” Cohen says animatedly. “With the combination of our integrated design and delivery method, Passivhaus principles, the creativity and will to do so, we can deliver tomorrow’s building and development today. And at cost parity with standard construction!” He is excited. No wonder.

This is the manifestation of Cohen’s deep desire to help create a livable, sustainable world.

SDB boasts a single source delivery process for the customer; the firm administers engineering, design, development and construction during which time their Building Information Modeling provides cutting edge, real time, 3-D modeling that eliminates inefficiency.

And, SDB remains responsible for the performance of their Passivhaus buildings.

Unlike more conventional, developer-driven condominium communities, Jubilee members (the future residents) are making the decisions that steer the actual design. Cohousing communities around the world have found that for that special feel of a closeknit neighborhood, houses should be clustered with parking on the periphery and common green spaces, and the Common House within sight of each front door.

Because Jubilee is a multi-generational community, it plans for a mix of studios to one and four bedroom homes some of which, but not all, will share wall(s) with another unit. Wide, easily navigated pedways will connect all the homes and Common House. Gardens and play areas will be easily accessible. The Common House needs a large kitchen and dining/great room for community functions, some guest bedrooms, community laundry, child and teen play areas and a mail room.

For a project the size of Jubilee, Cohen can lower costs by offering fewer design variation options, buying in bulk, and building out all at once. First, the community layout and Common House design is driven by community principles of being ecologically sound and affordable, as well as by group preferences which have been carefully examined

and conveyed to the designer. Then factors of size, terrain and all the infrastructure requirements are fed into the equation. Finally, with continued guidance of the future residents themselves, Cohen will produce a limited selection of house floor plans with a narrow range of window, counter, plumbing and flooring options, and encourage the community to forgo the impulse to customize. “Any color, as long as it’s white,” is Cohen’s axiom. Buying in bulk brings discounts on many materials, helping to defray the cost of the more expensive elements.

All Jubilee’s buildings will be net-zero ready. Many renewable energy options, including grid-tie solar, could be added after construction. When designs are finalized, SDB will vet local contractors for Jubilee, and the members themselves will review bids with an eye to keeping as much of the project’s estimated $5,000,000 cost as possible right here in Floyd County.

The Sunday of August 10th not only offers music and wine, but beer and bratwursts as well. Weeping Radish Brewery which hails from the Outer Banks, North Carolina comes to visit the Blue Ridge Mountains and brings along their delicious bratwursts and craft beer. It;s the Sunday following our Black Dog Summer Music Festival, so it makes for the perfect action-packed weekend.

Between the beer and the wine, the brats and the brunch, and the Black Dog Festival and Sunday Sounds, there is something for everyone, no matter the preference.

Sundays are not the only day for fun at Chateau Morrisette.

Summertime brings The Black Dog Music Festivals. These festivals are held on a beautifully landscaped field adjacent to the winery. Guests enjoy expansive views of Buffalo Mountain and the surrounding countryside. The day is filled with notable bands performing lively music, wine tastings from a number of different Virginia wineries, craft beers, and a variety of festival foods. Festival goers do not have to stay on the festival field because there are shuttles to and from the winery running all day, so guests have the opportunity to visit the winery, tasting room and restaurant too.

There are four Black Dog Music Festivals: Rhythm and Vine on July 5th with headliner Paul Thorn Band and opening performance by Alternate Routes. Next comes The Black Dog Summer Music Festival on August 9th featuring newgrass band Railroad Earth. September 13th brings The Black Dog Music and BBQ Festival featuring not only a music festival, but also some of the best Kansas City style BBQ around. Competitors come from all over the region to compete for best barbecue. Mountain Heart headlines the festival and The Greencards are back to open the show. And finally, Beach Music fans come out in droves for The Black Dog Beach Music Festival on October 11th where The Catalinas and The Embers will keep fans dancing all day long.

Growing Floyd’s Green Hotel

The Hotel Floyd opened in 2007 as downtown Floyd’s first green lodging establishment. Built by Jack Wall and Kamala Bauers, it features themed rooms that showcase the music, art, mountain culture and natural beauty that is increasingly drawing visitors to Floyd.

Constructed with eco-friendly building materials, and with photovoltaic solar panels on the roof, the hotel was well received, which led to its expansion. In 2011, an electric car charger was installed on the 2 ½ acre grounds and two pet-friendly suites with full kitchens were built adjacent to the hotel’s 14-roomed original building. In the summer of 2013, construction began on the hotel’s four-story addition with an April 2014 planned opening.

The new addition includes 24 themed rooms (singles and suites), a reception lobby, a gift shop, a holistic fitness room and a conference center. The conference center, which is available for rent, features state of the art meeting equipment and opens onto a courtyard garden, making the combination suitable for wedding receptions and other events. A café is also housed in the new addition, providing space for the hotel to offer continental breakfast that will incorporate locally produced food.

The hotel’s central downtown location has contributed to its popularity. Offering boutique style and modern amenities amidst a small town setting, the hotel is within walking distance to historic sites, the Floyd Farmers Market, antique and clothing stores, fine arts and crafts shops and a town park where mountain sunsets can be enjoyed. Artisan baked goods, farm-to-table meals, tapas, Mexican fare, brick oven pizzas, micro-brews and traditional country cooking are all available downtown.

On Thursday evenings from May to October, the hotel hosts free concerts at the Hotel Floyd gazebo bandstand. Other live music venues are a footpath away and include Dogtown Roadhouse, Oddfellas Cantina and the world famous Floyd Country Store; a Crooked Road Heritage Music Trail destination and home of the Friday Night Jamboree, where people come from all over to enjoy traditional Appalachian music and dancing.

Nearby activities and places of interest include hiking trails, kayaking on the Little River, small farms, artists’ studios, wellness centers and wineries. The scenic Blue Ridge Parkway with more than 40 miles running through Floyd and Floydfest, a popular five day annual music festival, are among the area’s attractions that have made the one-stoplight town of Floyd a destination.

The hotel’s themed rooms and suites are decorated by local artists, groups and businesses and reflect the creativity of the Floyd community.

The natural hardwood furniture is all made local and some of it is handcrafted. Special touches that add to the themed decors include an antique typewriter in the Floyd Writers Suite that was once used in the Bank of Floyd, a collection of framed quilt and lace crochet samples in The Old Church Gallery Suite, a handmade fiddle displayed in the Floyd Country Store Suite and lamps with honeycomb designs in the Spikenard
