Container Gardening: Choosing The Right Plant For The Pot (NAPSA)-It’s a growing trend: Twenty-one million households are planting container gardens. It saves space, helps control pests and overcome soil issues, and lets you enjoy fresh, homegrown produce even without a yard. To ensure your success, it’s important to pick the right plant for the pot. Fortunately, seed companies are developing vegetable seeds well adapted for container gardens. “Today’s container gardeners now have access to even more plants that are compact in size, yield more, taste great and feature unique colors and shapes,” said John Marchese of Seminis Home Garden seed. To help you get started, consider these tips from experts at the University of Illinois Extension: Choosing a Container • Anything that holds soil and has drainage holes in the bottom may be transformed into a container garden for terrestrial plants. • For vibrant plant growth, the containers must provide adequate space for roots and soil media, allowing the plant to thrive. Soil • Soils for containers need to be well aerated and well drained while still being able to retain enough mois-

You don’t need a lot of space to enjoy fresh homegrown vegetables. ture for plant growth. • Never use garden soil by itself for container gardening, no matter how good it looks or how well things grow in it outside. • Containers often use soilless or artificial media that contain no soil at all. • When these mixes are used, they should be moistened slightly before planting. Fill a tub with the media, add water and lightly fluff the media to dampen it. • When filling containers with media, don’t fill the pot to the top.

Leave about a one-inch space between the top of the soil and rim of the pot. Fertilizer • A regular fertilizer program is needed to keep plants growing well and attractively all season. • The choice of fertilizer analysis will depend on the kinds of plants you grow. High-nitrogen sources would be good for plants grown for their foliage while flowering and vegetable crops would generally prefer lowernitrogen and higher-phosphorous fertilizer types. Choosing Plants For Your Container Garden • Plants that thrive in like soil, watering and light conditions make successful combinations. When combining plants, size, texture, proportion, color, setting and lighting all play a role. Caring For Your Vegetables • Containers offer the advantage of being portable. As the seasons, temperature and light conditions change, you can move your containers so they enjoy the best conditions for peak performance. • Most fruit-bearing vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squashes and eggplant require full sun. • Leafy vegetables such as lettuce, cabbage and spinach can tolerate more shady locations, unlike root veg-

etables such as radishes, carrots and onions. • There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to watering. You have to watch your containers and understand how much moisture each plant needs. Feel the soil-if the first inch or so is dry, add water until it starts to drip out of the drainage holes. Special Seeds “Just because they are using a smaller space to grow the plant doesn’t mean the fruit has to be small, too,” Marchese explained. “For example, if container gardeners are looking for a compact plant that produces large and tasty tomatoes, they should try a new hybrid tomato variety called Debut.” Container gardeners don’t have to sacrifice flavor for a more conveniently grown plant either. “Husky Red is a medium-sized tomato hybrid that has great flavor. We have also developed a cherry tomato hybrid version called Husky Cherry Red that has the potential to set lots of sweet, flavorful fruit,” added Marchese. Other compact hybrid tomato varieties include Patio, which produces about a 4ounce tomato, and a saladette tomato variety called Yaqui that produces large-sized fruit. Learn More For more

May 12 - 18

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20

Aries, avoid making a mistake you may regret later. Difficulties are expected with any situation, but you have to rise above and exhibit grace under pressure.

Aries, you may feel like you need to move faster to get ahead, but the opposite is true this week. Slow down and focus on the details and you will benefit.

Aries, something irresistible keeps grabbing your attention. Don't overindulge too much or you will regret the decision later on. Exercise moderation.

TAURUS – April 21/May 21

Aries, take time to sort through some of the paperwork on your desk. You could find there is something important that you overlooked that needs to be addressed.

Taurus, though the first few days of the week may seem disastrous, hang in there and you will find things will turn around quite quickly.

Taurus, you may be tempted to run away from a challenging situation, but it is in your best interest to hunker down and face the problem. You won't be going it alone.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21

There are a few things you can't seem to work out in your head, Taurus. A better idea may be to put everything on paper and perhaps the answer will jump out.

Gemini, sometimes you have to make some noise to be heard, which may seem out of character for you. If the cause is that important, you will do what is necessary.

Gemini, you seem to quickly conquer tasks that others struggle with. It could be thanks to your ability to focus, but look over your work to make sure it's correct.

CANCER – June 22/Jul 22

Ask questions and you will likely get all the right answers, Cancer. Trust your intuition to fill in the blanks and rely on the people you look to for advice to guide you in the right direction.

Cancer, you can't get enough of a certain thing, but you may need to pace yourself. Otherwise your interest may start to wane. A surprise situation arises on Thursday.

LEO – July 23/August 23

Cancer, while many things come easily to you, there is one particular situation that continually proves problematic. You might have to scale a few mountains to handle it.

Surprising events are in store as you continue to change your views about lifealtering events, Cancer. You may find your master plan is entirely turned on its head.

TAURUS – April 21/May 21 Taurus, address a situation that concerns you so it does not become a major misunderstanding. Others share your concerns, but they might be waiting for someone else to speak up.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, now might be a great time to present a new image. Someone you want to get to know better will respond to the changes you make in a positive way.

May 19 - 25

TAURUS – April 21/May 21

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, there will be a few moments this week when you seem to have a breakthrough. Maybe it's in a relationship or you have just the right answers at work.

LEO – July 23/August 23

Leo, enjoy activities and challenges that enable you to use your talents and skills fully. Stick to relationships with positive people and you will be just fine.

Leo, there are things you need to say to a particular person in your life. But you do not know how to express your opinions in a way that's easy to understand. Speak from the heart.

Leo, this week you might be better off tackling things on your own instead of looking to others for support. This will help minimize any potential distractions.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22

Virgo, don't let someone pressure you into doing something you don't want to do. Be prepared to face a few challenges, the most important of which might be figuring out your love life.

You may be feeling a bit under the weather this week, Virgo. It's likely due to you pushing your schedule to the limits. Schedule some recovery time for yourself.

You have a few secrets you are not willing to share just yet, Virgo. That's alright. Keeping some of your agenda private will inspire curiosity and be to your advantage.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23

Libra, you need to rely on someone this week for a big project, but you don't know who to choose. Make a list of your best prospects, and then you can narrow it down from there.

Libra, you may be trying to get a certain person alone so you can have some oneon-one time together. A rendezvous is possible this week.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22

Libra, you may be feeling a little homesick, especially if you are away on business or on vacation. Try to make the most of the situation even if you're feeling nostalgic.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22

Scorpio, you are at an impasse because you are second-guessing some of your most recent decisions. You may need to shift your focus to get back on track.

Scorpio, if it seems like nothing is going your way, keep in mind there is a master plan in the works. You may not be able to see the resolution, but just be patient.

LEO – July 23/August 23

Listen and observe what everyone is doing this week, Libra. Once you have a clear image you can take the appropriate action to achieve all of your goals.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, the people you interact with this week will teach you some valuable lessons. Your gut instinct will lead you in the right direction, but it's up to you to take action.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, consider what made you happy in the past and work toward achieving that happiness again. Things will fall into place if you are honest with yourself.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Do your best to sort through any strong emotions, Capricorn. Remember, you cannot have happy days all the time, but you can learn from the challenging ones.

You can use a break from the daily grind, Scorpio. It might be time to plan a getaway. You may want to make this a solo trip so you can fully recharge.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 The truth can sometimes hurt a bit, Sagittarius. But a dose of honesty this week provides the reality check you have been needing. Make some changes.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, an event this week gets you fired up and excited. It could be the news you have been waiting to hear from work or from a significant other.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18

Take on a new challenge or hobby to meet new people, Aquarius. Entertaining friends and their mutual friends will open up new possibilities.

Aquarius, knowing when to keep quiet can be difficult, especially when you suspect something is off-kilter. This week you will be put to the test.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20 Pisces, trust your intuition regarding matters of the heart. Love is in the stars, and you should look for that special person.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20 Pisces, the week may begin somewhat aimlessly, but things will all come together by the middle of the week.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 The old adage that if you want something done right you have to do it yourself rings especially true this week, Sagittarius. Your skills are put to the test.

Leo, your energy level is so revved up that others won't be able to keep up with you. You may have to slow down a little to let others catch up. Virgo, others find it difficult to change your opinion once you have your mind set on something. But it still helps to consider if the direction you're heading is the right way.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, there are a few puzzle pieces that you need to get into place and then you'll have everything worked out. Reward yourself with a night out.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20

Capricorn, there is a certain window of time this week when you will be extremely efficient and effective. The other times you may as well throw in the towel.

Capricorn, lay low for awhile rather than drumming up some trouble. Tempting as it is to stir the pot, it may cause more difficulties for you in the long run.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, you have to work out a few loose ends before you are free for a muchneeded vacation or just time spent doing whatever it is that makes you happy.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20 Pisces, sometimes love can cause pain, but this is the way to grow and learn from mistakes. There are lessons to be learned in a few days.

FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, although you have a few projects on your to-do list, you can't seem to get started. Instead of looking at the entire list, tackle one task at a time and you'll get the job get done.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20 Pisces, turn your thoughts to creative efforts and you'll find the days will just fly by. Before you know it, the weekend will be here.

BINGO BONANZA USA May 2013 Page 21

May 26 - June 1 ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, you don't always have the answers when it comes to your romantic relationship, but that's alright. There are no rule books for this type of thing; you learn as you go.

TAURUS – April 21/May 21 Taurus, your life has been relatively tranquil. However, you have been itching to do something fun and adventurous to turn things around. This could be the week for that.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 You may find that one of your coworkers is more critical of your work than usual, Gemini. Don't take it the wrong way, as constructive criticism can be a good thing.

CANCER – June 22/Jul 22 Cancer, things have calmed down considerably in your life. This week presents a good opportunity to take a trip that is geared entirely around your interests.

LEO – July 23/August 23 Leo, remain modest about your personal and professional accomplishments this week. Now is not the time to show off. Be humble in your conversations.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, as inviting as a situation may look, appearances can be deceiving. You may want to dip your toe into the water before you dive right into something.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, this week you need to be extra cautious if you are in the middle of any business dealings. All it can take is the slightest misstep to turn everything around.

The first nickelodeon—now called a movie theater—was established in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, in 1905 by John P.. Harris and Harry Davis. *** The term “restaurant” was first used by Boulanger, who opened the first establishment of its kind in Paris in 1765. *** The bird with the longest feathers is the onagadon, a domestic strain of red jungle fowl. Its feathers span more than 34 feet.

You’re not getting older, you’re getting better. An apple tree is at its prime when it’s about 50 years old. The United States produces about 100 million barrels of apples a year. *** Most lipstick contains fish scales. *** If you don’t think every day is a good day, just try missing one. –Cavett Robert ***

*** Only your real friends will tell you when your face is dirty. –Sicilian Proverb

A garden requires lots of water—most of it in the form of perspiration. —Lou Erickson *** Cleaning your house while your kids are still growing is like shoveling the walk before it stops snowing. —Phyllis Diller *** The normal static electricity shock that zaps your finger when you touch a doorknob is usually between 10,000 and 30,000 volts.

*** Pigs can cover a mile in about 7.5 minutes when running at top speed. ••• The typical hen will lay about 19 dozen eggs a year. *** Certain cheeses, including aged cheddar, Swiss and Monterey Jack, are thought to help protect teeth from decay.

The word “robot” was created by Karel Copek. It came from the Czech word “robotovat,” which means to work very hard. *** The snack called Cracker Jack originated in Chicago and it is thought to be the first snack to use toys in the package to market the product. *** It’s said that snacking on potassium-rich bananas can help beat high blood pressure. The reason for this is that it speeds up the rate at which salt is excreted from your body. *** The first long-distance roads in Europe—including England— were built by Imperial Rome for its legions. Some of these still serve as the basis for modern roads. *** An airplane mechanic invented the toy called the Slinky while he was playing with engine parts and realized the possible secondary use for the springs. *** The Chinese invented eyeglasses. Marco Polo reported seeing many pairs worn by the Chinese as early as 1275, 500 years before lens grinding became an art in the West

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, things beyond your control may be contributing to sour feelings this week. Look at the bright side of any situation and you can probably find a solution that works.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, you are seldom soft spoken, but this week you may have to be even more assertive to get your point across. Otherwise your opinions might fall on deaf ears.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Try to get outside as much as possible this week, Capricorn. The fresh air and sunshine can do wonders for your mood. Plus, you can get in some exercise.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Do not follow the examples of others when they act irrationally to a certain situation, Aquarius. Although it can be difficult, you need to take the high road.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20 Take a chance and express all of your goals and hopes this week, Pisces. Others may be surprised at what you have to say.

FUN BY THE NUMBERS Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test! HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle.

Easy Ways To Make Your Next Brunch Extra Special (NAPSA)-Whether you’re gathering family and friends around your table for an Easter brunch or a Saturday morning breakfast at home, put your own signature on the meal with these savory and sweet recipes for delicious, crowd-pleasing alternatives to an ordinary heat-and-serve offering. garine 3⁄4 cup sugar 2 teaspoons salt 1 cup hot water 2 envelopes Fleischmann’s Active Dry Yeast 1⁄2 cup warm water (100° to 110°F) 2 eggs 81⁄2 to 91⁄2 cups all-purpose flour Filling: 1⁄2 cup butter OR margarine, softened 1 cup sugar 11⁄2 tablespoons ground cinnamon Icing: Classic cinnamon rolls are a decadent 3 cups powdered sugar brunch treat. 6 tablespoons butter OR margarine, softened CLASSIC CINNAMON teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 ROLLS 5 to 6 tablespoons milk Prep Time: 30 minutes Bake Time: 25-30 minutes Combine potatoes, potato Proof Time: about 11⁄2 hours water, butter, sugar, salt and hot Yield: 24 rolls water in large mixer bowl. Stir Rolls: until butter melts; set aside and let 1 cup mashed potatoes cool. Combine yeast and 1⁄2 cup (about 2 warm water in small bowl. Let rest medium potatoes) 5 minutes. Add eggs, 2 cups flour 1 cup reserved potato and yeast mixture to potato mixwater ture. Beat until well mixed. 3⁄4 cup butter OR mar ded cheese. Bake by placing in a COLD oven; set temperature to 350˚F. Bake for 30 minutes or until done. These classic, sweet cinnamon rolls are sure to please.

Continue adding flour, 1 cup at a time, until soft dough forms. Knead on a lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic (about 4 to 6 minutes), OR knead with electric mixer using dough hook. Place in a greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover. Let rise in a warm, draft-free area about 1 hour, until doubled in size. Punch dough down; divide in half. Roll one portion of dough on a lightly floured surface to a 12x18inch rectangle. Spread with half the butter. Combine sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle half of the mixture over surface. Roll up tightly lengthwise, sealing edges. Cut into 12 slices. Place in greased 13x9-inch pan. Repeat with remaining dough. Cover. Let rise 30 to 45 minutes until nearly doubled. Bake in preheated 350°F oven for 25 to 30 minutes. Cool for 15 minutes. Combine icing ingredients and drizzle over rolls. To Freeze (unbaked rolls): Follow recipe as recommended up to and including when rolls are shaped and placed in pan. Tightly wrap rolls and pan with plastic wrap and foil. For best flavor, thaw and bake within one week of freezing. To Thaw: Place pan of rolls covered in refrigerator overnight. Remove from refrigerator and continue the thaw and rise process at room temperature. When thawing at room temperature, allow at least 2 hours for rolls to rise after removing from the refrigerator. If rolls are not rising, boil a pot of water, remove from heat, cover the pot with a wire rack and place pan of rolls, covered with a cloth, on top of rack. The steam will warm the dough to speed the rising process. Once the rolls have doubled in size, bake according to recipe.
