Understanding College Applications (NAPSA)-Whether starting the college application process early or jumping in late, free online planning tools, tips and resources are invaluable to students looking for ways to successfully complete their college applications. Among the options available to students, BigFuture(tm) (bigfuture.org) was created with the advice of real students and educators, and offers tips on common concerns such as how to get started if you are overwhelmed or are a procrastinator, how to finalize your application list, how to get a great letter of recommendation, and how to craft your application essays. "The key to minimizing the stress of the college application process, whether you are starting as early as middle school or are a se_nior just beginning now, is to get and stay organized," said April Bell, director of counseling at The College Board. "A step-by-step action plan will allow you to keep track of deadlines and various elements of a strong college application." BigFuture lets students create a personalized action plan that gives

Getting into college may be easier than many students realize.

them expert advice on all the steps they need to take to apply to college. By answering up to five simple questions, students can create a plan that serves as a road map to guide them through school to college, advise them on what to do and when, and track their progress. Parents can also find action plans on the website to help guide their children as well as information on how to help pay for their child's education. "A common mistake families make in selecting colleges is considering sticker price rather than net

price, [which is] the published price of the college minus the gift aid that the student receives," Bell said. In fact, most full-time college students receive some type of financial aid, and aid options vary by college. Students can get a personalized estimate from more than 300 colleges by using the College Board Net Price Calculator. They can also link to an individual institution's net price calculator by clicking on the "paying" tab on the school's profile page on the college search section of BigFuture. BigFuture provides four key starter steps for students who are overwhelmed by the college application process or are starting late. They include a breakdown of the anatomy of the college application, an application checklist and important truths about applying to college, such as the fact that college admission isn't as competitive as many students think. Fewer than 100 colleges in the U.S. are highly selective (i.e., they accept less than 25 percent of applicants) and close to 500 four-year colleges accept more than 75 percent of applicants. Open-admission colleges accept all or most high school

graduates. BigFuture's college search feature provides comparative information on al_most 4,000 college options. Research shows that applying to at least three colleges improves your chances of successfully enrolling in college. "Also critical is the ability to narrow your list once you've explored all your options," Bell said. "Most counselors recommend that students apply to five to eight colleges-more than that may not be the best use of time and resources." BigFuture provides expert advice on finalizing your college list, including how to narrow, sort and balance your list, as well as how to take cost into consideration. Two critical elements of a college application are the essays and the letters of recommendation. BigFuture provides "8 Tips for Crafting Your Best College Essay" and "3 Ways to Ap_proach Common College Essay Questions," as well as video tips from experts and real students and an analysis of a sample essay. Students can also learn "How to Get a Great Letter of Recommendation," including specific tips on whom to ask and what to provide letter writers with in order to get the best results.

February 3 - 9 ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, there are a few things you need to work out this week, but then you will be set for quite a while. Take the opportunity to recharge your batteries. TAURUS – April 21/May 21 Taurus, sometimes the things that are the hardest to come by are the ones that are most worth the effort. Think about this as you face obstacles. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, contrary to what you believe, things at work will go on even if you take a few days off for a vacation. There may be some catching up afterward, but you can handle it. CANCER – June 22/July Cancer, your mind may be churning, but worrying excessively over something will not help the situation. Therefore, focus on something else for a while. LEO – July 23/August 23 Leo, just when you think the week will go on without any excitement, something pops up and it's just what you need to beat the doldrums. Expect time with friends. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, sometimes you need to be tough on yourself to get things done, but you will be satisfied with the results when you push yourself. Focus on goals this week. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, a risk you take this week will pay off in a big way. You might be anxious to take a significant risk, but the eventual reward will be well worth it. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, it may be challenging to find some initial support for a new idea because you are essentially charting new territory. Just give it time and people will come around. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Slow down a little, Sagittarius. Moving faster will not get the job done to your satisfaction and then you only will have to do it all over again. Think through your options. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, shift your focus to your family for the next few days because you have to make some decisions that will affect them all. Listen to your gut feeling when making these decisions. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, there are some things around the house that need your attention, but you may be having trouble finding the motivation to tackle them just now. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20 Pisces, when an opportunity comes your way, you may want to take a pass because something better is on the horizon.

February 10 - 16

February 17 - 23

February 24 - March 2

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20

Aries, be on your best behavior this week. Acquaintances both new and established will have their eyes on you, and it is essential that you make a good impression. TAURUS – April 21/May 21 Taurus, although you may not be able to see into the future, you can plan for what may happen in the next few days. Now is the perfect time to check in with friends. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, get all of your work ducks in a row because you want to ensure you are up for the next promotion or pay increase. Now could be the time to make work your top priority. CANCER – June 22/Jul 22 You may find that you have an easy time of reading people this week, Cancer. Use this trait to your advantage to find out how certain people feel about your new ideas. LEO – July 23/August 23 Leo, don't get too excited when things seem out of whack this week. Keep calm and find out how you can set things on the right course. Lead by example, and others will follow. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, try not to participate in any new activities this week. You are already overextended. Clear your to-do lists before you take on any other responsibilities. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Show others how good their lives can be if they just follow a little of your own advice and take cues from what you have done already, Libra. Expect a few converts. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, you may be more focused on your fantasies and dream life than what is going on in your real life for the next few days. Just don't wander around in a fog for too long. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, it may be hard to concentrate this week, especially with so many ideas floating around in your head. But do your best to stay focused. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricron, lend a helping hand when you see an opportunity to do so. Donate your time to someone in need or help a friend or family member complete a project. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, clarify your needs and wants. Until you can delineate between these factors you may be spending unnecessarily, which is not what your budget needs. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20 Pisces, it may take a few days for you to handle things, but don't let that dissuade you from trying. Set your own timetable.

Aries, planning is going well and you have been following through with your responsibilities. Expect to tweak a few things in the days to come. TAURUS – April 21/May 21 Taurus, open up to a trusted friend to regarding a significant decision you have to make this week. This friend can provide some valuable perspective.

Aries, direct your efforts toward helping other people. You may find you are more energized when helping others, and your efforts will be much appreciated. TAURUS – April 21/May 21 Surround yourself with friends and family this week, Taurus. You should have some downtime, and you can use this time to catch up and reconnect with your loved ones. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, some levels of communication may be compromised this week, so your messages may not reach the intended recipient. It could take a little longer to get your point across. CANCER – June 22/Jul 22 Cancer, your boundless energy keeps people happy and engaged and should be used as much as possible in the next few days. You also could be sought after to fix problems. LEO – July 23/August 23 Leo, tap into your creative side to shake things up and stave off some boredom. Others may think your actions are suspect, but you know these efforts will help you achieve your ultimate goal. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 You have to accept that things change and you cannot preserve the present, Virgo. That said, start making plans for new things for this year starting with right now. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, although you are able to think quickly, you much prefer to have things organized. If you have a presentation to make next week, start working on it now. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, there has never been a better time to put romance in the forefront. If you're single, put all your cards on the table. If you're matched up, increase your amorous gestures. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, some people you know may be caught up wondering about past decisions that might not have worked out. Help them to focus on the here and now. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, while you are glad to lend a helping hand when you are asked, the request that comes in this week could be so big that you may actually be caught off-guard. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 It is hard to make progress this week, especially since it could feel like you're going at a snail's pace. Stick with it and everything on your list is likely to get done. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20 Pisces, although you can certainly use your share of the limelight, let another person shine this week and you'll have your own glow.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21

A barrage of new ideas makes you a hot item this week, Gemini. Your brain is working overtime and you may be shocked at what you come up with.

CANCER – June 22/Jul 22

Cancer, expect to see eye-to-eye with your significant other this week. You will be on the same page and this will help to strengthen your relationship.

LEO – July 23/August 23

Leo, embrace the opinions of those closest to you. Those opinions might differ from your own, but they may also provide you with some important perspective.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22

Try something different this week, Virgo. It may mean taking a new route to work or trying a new food. Try something that is out of your element and you may find you like it.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23

You will be full of energy this week and ready to handle anything that comes your way, Libra. When you get on a roll, you may find you have some admirers.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22

Scorpio, the coming week may try your patience. Relax when the week starts to prove too stressful, and you will make it through the week with your peace of mind intact.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21

Keep listening when others around you are talking, Sagittarius. You can learn valuable lessons just by keeping a trained ear on the conversation and use this information later on.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20

Capricorn, you may have big plans this week but that doesn't mean you can leave all other responsibilities by the wayside. If you can't get to things yourself, then delegate.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18

Aquarius, you crave change this week, even if it is something small and mundane. Figure out something you can do on a small level to incorporate change into your day.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20

You may be inclined to help your community this week, Pisces. There are bound to be plenty of places to share your time.

FUN BY THE NUMBERS Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test! HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle.
