Creative Ways To Save For College (NAPSI)—Saving for college is one of the most important investments you can make. One in five American families with children who are likely to attend college name saving for higher education their top priority, according to the How America Pays for College survey, conducted by Gallup and Sallie Mae, the nation’s No. 1 financial services company specializing in education. According to the study, 60 percent of parents have saved for their child’s college education and are on track to save $48,367, on average, by the time their child turns 18. Most savers use at least two vehicles. General savings accounts and CDs are the most popular (50 percent), followed by investment accounts (34 percent). There are, however, other creative ways to save for college. • For a twist on saving on school supplies and textbooks, consider purchasing them through Upromise, www.upromise.com, Sallie Mae’s college savings rewards program that gives cash back for college from eligible purchases at hundreds of participating companies. It is free to join, and when back-to-school shopping, members can also earn cash back on school supplies and dorm decor. • In lieu of traditional presents at birthdays or the holidays, you can give the “gift of higher education.” With Ugift, www.529.com/ugift, you
can easily enlist family, friends and others to help grow your college savings. • In addition to building up your savings plan, explore free money.
You don’t have to have a 4.0 GPA or be a star athlete to qualify for many scholarships. You can check out Sallie Mae’s free scholarship search, www.salliemae.com/scholarships, which offers access to an award database of more than 3 million scholarships worth over $16 billion. • In addition, you can research your eligibility for federal and state financial aid. Two-thirds of full-time undergraduate students receive some kind of financial aid, so odds are you may be eligible, too. Complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) annually as early as January, starting the year before you plan to begin college. To learn more, visit the Department of Education at www.fafsa.gov.
Key Technology Features In Digital Photography (NAPSA)-Any time can be the right time to use digital cameras and camcorders to capture images that you can treasure-whether they’re pictures taken during an exotic vacation, a restful staycation or a weekend barbecue. The technology behind these digital devices is constantly evolving, making it possible to do things you might not have even considered just months ago. Here are three key features that can improve the quality of your photos: • Get the shot you want even in low light: Some of the most remarkable moments occur in low-light situations. Imagine a sunset dinner on a cruise, for instance, or a national landmark at dawn. To ensure the highest-quality video and photos look for a camera with a high-sensitivity image sensor that delivers superb image quality, especially in those low-light moments. For example, Canon’s HS SYSTEM-enabled PowerShot cameras are designed to shoot clear images without sacrificing quality. When shooting video in low light, try the line of camcorders that use the HD CMOS Pro sensor. • Capture, view and print with
HD video: With high-definition (HD) increasingly becoming the standard in home video, seek out a camera or camcorder with an HD video feature.
The technology behind digital cameras and camcorders is constantly evolving, making it possible to get shots you might not have even considered just months ago Canon PowerShot cameras and VIXIA camcorders make it possible to get smooth, high-quality HD video clips. With a dedicated movie button, HDMI connectivity and Smart Auto, these cameras and camcorders make it easy to shoot great videos that can be relived over and over again. To preserve your favorite shots,
America’s Love For TV Dance Show Has Long Hisstory (NAPSA)-Dance in America is bigger than ever. Popular shows like “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Dancing with the Stars” have enraptured the public and inspired a whole new generation to get up and dance. It seems nothing has had an impact on the mass appeal of dance more than television. But TV’s love affair with dance isn’t new. In fact, dance on TV goes back to the earliest days of the small screen. How It Began In 1950, the first dance show waltzed onto the airwaves. It was called “The Arthur Murray Party,” hosted by famous dancers Arthur and Kathryn Murray. Each week, the couple performed a mystery dance and the viewer who correctly identified the dance would get free lessons at a local studio. Just two years later, “American Bandstand” debuted, featuring the perennially young host Dick Clark. For nearly 40 years, kids from around the country would tune in to see the hottest new dances, the fashions and the regular couples on the show. Then, in 1971, “Soul Train” offered a new, funky version of the dance show concept and was so successful that it lasted 35 years. Stepping Up The Energy Later came such TV dance hits as “Dance Fever” with Deney Terrio (1979-87), “Solid Gold” (1980-’88) and “Dance Party USA” (1986-’92). Then, in 2005, came what would become ratings-smashing hits-”Dancing with the Stars,” which was a spin-off of the U.K. TV show “Strictly Come Dancing,” and “So You Think You Can Dance,” the competition show that, like “American Idol,” holds auditions for dancers to win a spot on the show. Finalists compete for a new car, cash and a Las Vegas dancing contract. The Trend Continues Today, such shows are bigger than ever and the arts channel Ovation is featuring consider printing high-quality photos from video snapshots using the Full HD Movie Print feature on Canon’s latest PIXMA Inkjet Printers. This feature enables you to print individual movie frames, turning them into snapshots of your fond memories. • Add stability to your images: One way to help eliminate blurry images is by using cameras and camcorders that employ technology that can compensate for both angular and shift camera shake that may occur during shooting. Canon cameras and camcorders, for

The channel is also launching a contest called “One Dance. One Chance.” for aspiring dance students. The competition is open to all dance groups, classes, ensembles, troupes and crews, with dancers ages 13 and up. For more information visit www.ovationtv.com/dancecontest. Whether you’re a kid, a teen, an adult or a senior citizen, you’re never too young or old to enjoy dancing. instance, feature Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) to counter the effects of camera shake or slight movements. When taking video of a special occasion, keeping the camera steady can be a difficult task for anyone. Canon’s Dynamic SuperRange Optical IS addresses this issue by providing continuous adjustment throughout to correct a broad range of movement. You can find more information about these and other features at usa.canon.com.

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20
ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20
ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20
Aries, just when you think you’ve had enough, the waters recede and the path is clear. All it takes is a little deterination and a lot of patience to get there.
Aries, don’t be too quick to judge a loved one this week. He or she is only making due with the hand they were dealt. A little help from you could remedy the situation further.
Aries, if you’re seeking fun in the sun, make the most of the last few days of summer or hop a plane to a tropical paradise. This could be a time for romance. TAURUS – April 21/May 2 Taurus, take some time to relax. Keeping up this momentum is only going to cause burnout down the road. It’s time for some well-deserved relaxation.
TAURUS – April 21/May 2
There are no easy answers this week, Taurus. That is why you will just have to be diligent in your own quest to find the best solutions. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, a small disagreement at work eventually will lead to a bigger disaster than you had imagined. You may have to have another party intervene to work things out. CANCER – June 22/July 22 Cut someone close to you a little slack, Cancer. This person has been extremely distracted and isn’t able to devote all of his or her attention to the task at hand. LEO – July 23/August 23 No matter what you do, you can’t seem to lose this week, Leo. Call it a lucky streak or the stars aligned in your favor. Whatever the case, let the good times roll. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, when a family member comes to you for advice, snide remarks won’t suffice. This person really needs assistance and trusts you to have an open mind on the situation. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, now that you’ve tackled some of the bigger tasks that were on your agenda, you can focus on having more down time for enjoyment. Spend it with friends. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, when the going gets tough, you just have to get tougher. Now is not the time to admit defeat. Buckle down and get the job done. You will be happy you stuck it out. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, you’re only fooling yourself if you think you can keep up with all the secrets and still get others to trust you. Others may be humoring you. It’s time to confess. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, just when it seems like your luck won’t change for the best you have a stroke of good fortune. The best part is the luck will last for a while. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, when you are not able to tackle a problem, it’s alright to call in a professional to help you solve it. Not everyone is an expert in every subject. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20 Pisces, there’s no time like the present to simply do something nice for a friend or family member. Go on and bring a smile to someone’s face.
TAURUS – April 21/May 2
Taurus, there are certain things that are just beyond your control. You will need substantial patience in order to get through the next few days. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, romantic endeavors are on the top of your mind and you can figure out options for having a one-on-one day or night with someone special. CANCER – June 22/July 22 Cancer, it might come off as if you’re trying too hard if you don’t share the responsibilities with anyone else. Working yourself silly is not worth the glory. LEO – July 23/August 23 Leo, someone is just not getting your message, so you may have to try a different tactic in order to be heard. Don’t give up on the situation just yet. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, an extended vacation is about to come to an end. Buckle down and devote yourself to new tasks and be ready to handle a heavy workload. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Financial woes are the least of your problems, Libra. There are other things that will take precedence over pinching a few pennies. Expect some news soon. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, some frustrating times are on the horizon. It’s going to take some time to sort out the situation. Spend some time reflecting on the best course of action. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, a busy week lies ahead with plenty of opportunities for socialization. If you’re in the party mood, get out there and have some fun with other people. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, if you have been putting off keeping up with health issues, it’s time to get back on track. Use this week to make an appointment for a physical or other checkup. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, friends and family offer help with good intentions. Think about this when you get suspicious over why a particular person is doing something. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20 Sometimes you have to do things you don’t want to do, Pisces. Even though you have no motivation, you’ll muddle through.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Make a list of all your expenses and see what you can trim, Gemini. It’s time to get your finances in check and knowing what you’re working with is a first step.
CANCER – June 22/July 22 Cancer, after doing the same thing week after week, you are certainly ready for a change. Use this opportunity to try one of your “bucket list” ideas to drum up excitement.
LEO – July 23/August 23 A change of scenery will do you good, Leo. Take a walk or hop on a bike and enjoy the neighborhood or someplace a little further away. This change of pace is refreshing.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, stress at the office has left you feeling a bit down. But recognize this opportunity to show you’re a winning employee to your higher-ups.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, plan a visit to see family members and you’ll get those warm and fuzzy feelings only your loved ones can help inspire. If a trip isn’t in the cards, do a video chat.
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, sometimes you have to step away from the problem to find its solution. Spending all your waking hours obsessing over the problem won’t help.
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Lay low for a while, Sagittarius. Things are happening around you that can lead to trouble if you become involved. It’s safer if you keep a low profile.
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, consider hiring some help around the house in the coming weeks. There’s a lot on your plate and a few extra helping hands can make it easier to manage what lies ahead.
AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, friends and family will rely on you to diffuse a stressful situation. When something occurs this week, take your usual calm approach.
PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20 Creativity is in bloom for you, Pisces. Make the most of crisp weather on the horizon for a fun day trip somewhere.
FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY
August 21 - 27 ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, if romance hasn’t been on your mind, it’s time to make it a priority. Do what you have to do — wine, dine and pull out all the romantic punches. TAURUS – April 21/May 2 Another person’s misdeeds will shed some light on your own, Taurus. Recognize your mistakes and work to correct them as soon as possible. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you will need an abundance of patience if you are to make it through the next few days. Thursday proves especially challenging when a curveball gets thrown your way. CANCER – June 22/July 22 Manipulate a difficult situation to your advantage, Cancer. You already have a way with people, now you just have to get them on board with your idea. LEO – July 23/August 23 Leo, after a few bumps along the road, things will even out to a steady pace for you. That’s a good thing because now you’ll be able to step back and review your actions. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, someone else’s needs will take priority over your own this week. That could put a crimp in your plans. Find out if you will need help to get through the days. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, just because something costs more doesn’t mean it is necessarily better. You will learn this on Friday with your next purchase as you do your research. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Find a way to reduce the stress in your life, Scorpio. This way you can enjoy family and friends without a lot of things on your mind at any given time. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, don’t make too much of a situation because you’re reading into it the wrong way. The truth is much less than you are making things. Excitement awaits you. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, if you don’t take a breather now and then you will be left with little energy. Take advantage of invitations by friends to hang out and enjoy some downtime. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, you may feel like you’re taking two steps back every day, but the truth is you’re making progress - just in small doses. Stick with what you’re doing. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20 Pisces, few things are more exciting than being surprised by someone you love and respect. That is just what may happen to you.

FUN BY THE NUMBERS Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test! HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle.

SEPTEMBER BIRTHSTONE SAPPHIRE: GEM OF WISDOM
(PX) — Sapphire has held a special place in the hearts and minds of mankind ever since the first pebbles of this lovely blue corundum were found in Indian and Asian rivers centuries ago. Though sapphire grows in the ground like most gemstones, it often is washed down into riverbeds, called alluvial deposits, where its bright blue colors would easily catch the eye of ancient treasure hunters. Some of the earliest Indian jewelry, discovered around 2500 B.C., featured rough crystals of sapphire along with ruby, its fellow corundum. Blue sapphire was valued by
ancient Hindu mystics as the key to developing wisdom and spiritual progress. By Roman times, blue sapphires were used as beads, ring stones, carved intaglios and pendant stones, because they were said to attract divine favor to their owners. Throughout the Middle Ages, sapphires were alleged to bring a great destiny to their wearers, and often were used in court and royal jewelry. Alchemists believed that blue sapphires would help them develop clairvoyance, telepathy and divine wisdom. Today, blue sapphire is the September birthstone, the fifth and 45th wedding anniversary gem, and the zodiac gem for Taurus. It has become one of the world’s most popular gems. Sapphire comes in a wide range
of blues, varying from very light blue to a deep blue that is almost black. The very finest sapphires are a velvet, slightly violetish medium to medium-dark blue, often called Kashmir blue, after its original location in India. Sapphires are mined in many countries including Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Africa, Australia and the United States, specifically Montana. Sapphires from Africa, Sri Lanka and Montana tend to be lighter in color, often with grayish or violet overtones. When pricing sapphires, medium blues usually are the most expensive. One of the most exciting recent developments is the entry of fancy colored sapphires into the jewelry realm, according to Jack Abraham from Precious Gem Resources in New York City. “Fancy colored sapphires are those colors of corundum that are not considered ruby or blue sapphire. They can come in green, violet, purple, yellow, gold, pink, light orange and the famous pinkish-orange color known as Padparadscha, named for the Hindu word ‘lotus.’ Many are affordable and available in large quantities,” says Abraham. To improve a sapphire’s color and clarity, it often is subjected to controlled heating. This is a permanent enhancement that is well accepted by jewelers. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness, which made it difficult to facet until modern cutting technology was developed. Cut stones are available in
This platinum and 3.59-carat emerald-cut sapphire ring from NOA reflects the sleek and modern jewelry styles for fall. sizes up to 10 carats, with one- to five-carat gems most common. “Sapphire is remarkably tough and safe in most types of cleaning. However, it should be given the same care as any other precious gem to avoid scratching,” advises Lynn Ramsey, president of the Jewelry Information Center. “Most damage to sapphires occurs from rubbing them against another sapphire or diamond, careless handling and hard knocks directly to the stones.” With the magnificent range of sapphire colors available at all price levels today, sapphire is not just the gem of wisdom, it’s a wise buy as well.
Tips To Use Throughout The Year For A Bigger Tax Refund (NAPSI)—Your everyday activities could amount to big savings on next year’s tax return. Although your federal tax return isn’t due until April 17, 2012, you should do two things now. First, take a few minutes to learn what tax credits and deductions exist. The Internal Revenue Service has surprisingly easy-to-understand information on its website at www.irs.gov. Tax preparation solutions also offer information and tips on their websites, even if you don’t use their product. Second, save receipts and documents for whatever you think you might be able to claim. “You may not qualify a particular credit or deduction right now, but you may by the end of 2011,” said Jessi Dolmage, spokesperson for TaxACT. “Organize documents by category and save in one place to make tax time easier.” To help you get started on your everyday tax savings, TaxACT summarizes several savings opportunities. Parents who work, attend school or are disabled may be able to write off child care expenses for children under 13. The Child and Dependent Care Credit includes
A bigger tax refund is possible if you follow some important tax tips. before- and after-school care and day camp (overnight camp does not qualify). The credit amount depends on income, but is generally 20 to 35 percent of up to $3,000 in qualifying expenses per dependent, or $6,000 for two or more dependents. If you use a personal vehicle for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes, you may be able to deduct the mileage. The IRS’ standard mileage rates for the first half of 2011 are 51 cents per business mile, and 19
cents per medical and moving mile. Business, medical and moving miles driven between July 1 and December 31, 2011 are worth 55.5 and 23.5 cents per mile. Mileage for charitable organizations is 14 cents per mile for all of 2011. Direct and indirect expenses for use of your home for business purposes may be deductible. The space must be regularly and exclusively used as your principal place of business or for business meetings with patients, clients or customers. The amount is determined by the percentage of your home used and whether gross business income is less than your total business expenses. Depending on your adjusted gross income and whether you’re covered by an employer-sponsored plan, you may deduct up to $5,000 of contributions to a traditional IRA. If you’re 50 or older, you can deduct as much as $6,000. Contributions to both traditional and Roth IRAs for 2011 must be made by April 17, 2012. If medical and dental expenses for you, your spouse and dependents exceed 7.5 percent of your AGI, 2011 costs may be an itemized deduction. Expenses may include
insurance premiums, fees paid to medical professionals, prescription drugs, transportation costs and hospital services. Generating income from a hobby? You may be able to claim hobby expenses up to the amount of income generated as an itemized deduction. The IRS considers a hobby an activity you’d do even if it didn’t generate income. Keep in mind you may get bigger tax benefits from making it a business if you’re generating regular income from the hobby. If you itemize, you can generally deduct interest paid on your home mortgage(s). The amount depends on the mortgage date, amount and how you use the mortgage proceeds.
