Sometimes it doesn't take an extended vacation to recharge your batteries. A brief change of scenery and venue can make for quite the respite as well. Road trips also tend to be more affordable than longer getaways. If you have the benefit of a tow hitch and a camper, you already have your accommodations. But even if you still need lodging, there are several budget motels that can fit the bill for overnight lodging along your route. Here are some other road trip tips. * Before embarking, take out a map and plan your excursion.
Stick to locations that are within reasonable driving distance from home. If you roam too far, you will spend more time behind the wheel than you will enjoying your destination. Locations no more than five to six hours away should
suffice. * Get your vehicle in road trip shape by ensuring it is in good working condition. If your car is scheduled for an oil change, get one before leaving. In addition, top off fluids and be sure that tires are properly inflated. * Stick to the scenic routes. While they may not save you travel time, avoiding interstates in favor of picturesque backroads will make for a much more relaxing and visually inspiring trip. Schedule rest stops so you can get out of the car and explore along the way to your destination. Taking backroads may also help you avoid some of your fellow weekend travelers.
* Make your long weekend a Saturday through Monday affair. You may find the roads are more congested Friday through Sunday. Simply starting your trip on Saturday and returning on Monday could save you the headache of driving in heavy traffic. * Scope out low-cost activities at your destination. Many national parks are inexpensive and may only charge one fee per vehicle to enter. After Labor Day, many beaches no longer charge entry fees, making them an affordable option. Take advantage of cooler temperatures and picturesque scenery by planning an autumn weekend road trip.

(PX) — Topaz, November’s primary birthstone, has one of the most confusing histories of any popular gem. Though topaz has been known since antiquity, it has suffered from considerable misidentification, most often being confused with citrine, the alternative November birthstone. Both topaz and citrine were found on an island in the Mediterranean called Topazios in ancient times. Since the two gems were alike in color, though not in size or form, they often were mixed up. The most common topaz colors are brown, yellow, yellow-gold and orange, all very similar to the shades of citrine. The finest reddish-orange topaz, called Imperial topaz, can resemble exceptional Padparadscha sapphire. Orange, reds and pinks are the rarest topaz colors, and the light green, purple-red and colorless varieties of topaz easily are mistaken for other gemstones. Even with this confusion, topaz accumulated an impressive body of alleged healing properties. Topaz is reputed to increase understanding, strengthen breathing, prevent colds, enhance creativity, bring relaxation, control angry passions, restore energy and aid in tissue regeneration. Topaz often was used to promote wisdom in its wearer, which may explain the medieval custom of giving topaz rings to heads of state, diplomats and royalty. The gems in Hans Holbein’s portrait of Henry VIII most certainly are golden brown topaz, as no other gem in that color was considered suitable for royalty at the time. Blue topaz is the fourth anniversary gemstone, and Imperial topaz is the gemstone for 23rd wedding anniversaries. Topaz is the zodiacal stone for Sagittarius. Nature rarely produces a blue topaz. However, in the 20th century, due to the advent of safe enhancement technology, blue topaz has become available and a popular gemstone for jewelry. “Most blue topaz is colorless topaz that has been irradiated and heat-treated to produce its blue color. The blue color created by this treatment process is permanent and stable under normal care conditions,” explains Shane McClure, graduate gemologist of the Gemological Institute of America. Blue topaz comes in light to deep blues

Despite its hardness, topaz polishes well and is easy to cut. Until the 1970s, it was mostly cut into longish ovals or dropshaped stones, because of the shape of the gem crystals. These days, topaz comes in most standard shapes, and in unusual cuts designed to show off its lovely colors. Topaz can be delicate and requires special care to avoid breaking under rough wear. Lynn Ramsey of the Jewelry Information Center advises, “Look for jewelry with mountings that protect the topaz, so that it’s less likely to break if dropped or hit. Earrings, pins, bangle bracelets and pendants are safer for daily wear than rings or flexible bracelets. Warm, soapy water is the best way to clean topaz jewelry.” With its new beauty and affordable prices, topaz is a gem that any wise buyer can enjoy.
(PX) — Turquoise is one of the oldest and best-known opaque gemstones, found widely among ancient Egyptian, Sumerian and Mesopotamian artifacts dating back before 3000 B.C. The name turquoise means “Turkish stone,” because the trade route that brought the gem to Europe came through Turkey. The first known deposits were found in ancient Turkey, then later in Egypt. Turquoise, with its robin’s egg blue hue, has graced the necks of Egyptian pharaohs and adorned early Native Americans in their ceremonial dress. Cleopatra probably used ground-up turquoise for eye paint, as well as wearing turquoise in her jewelry. Tutankhamen’s tomb was filled with examples of turquoise inlay, beads, sculpture and slabs used in everything from jewelry and furniture to the great sarcophagus and death masks. From its beginnings, turquoise was not exclusively a gem for the rich. Cavalry soldiers in most ancient armies carried pieces of turquoise or wore turquoise rings to keep them from falling off their horses. Children in several cultures were given turquoise charms to protect them from harm, prevent nightmares and to grant them restful sleep. During the 16th century, turquoise was used as currency by the Southwest Indians. They believed the gem could bring spoils to the warrior, animals to the hunter and happiness to all. Four centuries later, turquoise became December’s best-known birthstone. Turquoise also is the 11th wedding anniversary gem. Turquoise comes in many colors and qualities. It can be light to medium blue, greenish blue to green, or even a yellowish green. Some types have veins of a dark material called matrix; they are known as spiderweb turquoise. Douglas Hucker, president of American Gem Trade Association, explains, “In valuing turquoise for use in jewelry, the best material is an intense, even medium blue with no matrix and low porosity, so it takes a good polish. The cleaner and bluer the material, the more valuable it is considered.”
The United States now is the world’s leading producer of turquoise. The turquoise in this necklace, by Peyote Bird Designs, was found in Kingsman, AZ. Though most turquoise is used in its natural state, thin pieces sometimes are backed with an epoxy to add thickness and strength to stones otherwise too difficult to be cut. Lighter pieces sometimes are impregnated with a colorless wax or plastic to seal the pores and deepen color. As with any gemstone, ask the jeweler if the stone has been treated in any way that might affect its care or cleaning. Lynn Ramsey of the Jewelry Information Center advises, “Clean turquoise in warm, soapy water. It is possible that perspiration, skin oils and cosmetics can discolor some turquoise over time, as the gem is sensitive to acids. Don’t use ultrasonic or steam cleaning on turquoise. With a little care, your turquoise jewelry will stay lovely for years.” Turquoise is as beautiful, popular and affordable as it was 5,000 years ago. With new sources being found in China and Australia, as well as the established mines in the United States, Mexico and Chile, turquoise will continue to be a gem that is as easy on the budget as it is on the eye.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 29 million people in the United States have diabetes, while another 86 million adults have prediabetes. One in four people with diabetes do not know they have the disease. Managing diabetes is more than just avoiding candy and cookies. Foods with a lot of fat or those that are high in carbohydrates also can be problematic. Such foods may not be so easy to avoid come the holiday season, but the following are a few tips to help men and
women with diabetes maintain their health through the holidays. · Anticipate foods. Certain foods are staples of the holiday season. If you anticipate potentially problematic foods, then you can develop a plan to avoid them or eat them in moderation in advance of arriving at a family gathering or holiday party. · Eat a healthy snack. Prior to going to a holiday party, eat something that will satisfy your hunger to avoid overeating once you are there. · Ask about foods. Don't be shy to ask the host or hostess about what will be served. This will help you develop a strategy that will fit with your meal plan. · Limit alcohol consumption. Only drink in moderation and eat something beforehand to prevent low blood glucose levels later. Avoid drinks with high calorie mixers or ones

Happy Birthday To The Game Of Bingo Modern bingo has evolved into a popular form of entertainment that can now be played in various ways. Whether playing for fun or money, thousands of people enjoy testing their luck at this game of chance. The game of bingo can be traced back to 1530 and an Italian lottery called, "Lo Giuocco del Lotto D'Italia," which Italians still play every Saturday. The game eventually became popular in France, Germany and North America. In the United States, players played their own variation of the lotto game featuring numbered cards and beans. The caller would pull small, numbered disks from an old cigar box and yell out the number. Players checked their cards for the number and would place a bean over the number if they had a match. When a sequence of numbers was covered, the winner would shout "Beano!" In December of 1929,
New York toy salesman Edwin Lowe happened upon beano being played at a Georgia carnival and thought it would make a great tent or carnival game. After testing out the game in his native New York, Lowe ran across a woman excited about the prospect of winning. But instead of shouting "beano," she called out "Bingo!" That prompted Lowe to name his game "Bingo." While bingo started to gain popularity, some organizations saw potential to turn a profit. A Pennsylvania priest approached Lowe about using bingo as a means to get his church out of some dire financial straits. Lowe set out to find a way to create a greater combina-
tion of numbers on the bingo cards to be workable on games that were larger in scale. He commissioned an elderly mathematics professor named Carl Leffler and requested the professor create 6,000 new Bingo cards with nonrepeating number groups. The cards were increasingly difficult to produce as the number combinations dwindled. By the time the task was completed, Professor Leffler had gone insane. By 1934, an estimated 10,000 bingo games were played each week in churches and elsewhere all across North America. Today it is estimated that more than $90 million is spent each week on bingo in North America.
Online bingo now enables tech-savvy people to play bingo on their computers, phones and tablets. Despite concerns that it might affect the business of traditional bingo halls, electronic bingo actually has only reinforced the popularity of all forms of the game. Electronic bingo is also now emerging as a popular way to play the game. Instead of paper bingo tickets, players use some sort of electronic device to record the numbers as they are called. Electronic bingo invites an entirely new audience to the game, attracting younger players who enjoy the technological aspect of game play. Bingo may be turning 85 this year, but its popularity has remained relatively constant since the game was introduced. Anyone can celebrate bingo's birthday by visiting a bingo hall and playing.
