To Advertise in the Bingo Bonanza Newspaper Call 817-274-2020 Hot Tips For Cold Weather Well-Being (NAPSA)-You may give a warm welcome to these ideas from the experts at Shriners Hospitals for Children-their mission to improve lives of children includes helping to keep them safe-on how to protect kids when the weather is cold and rough. Winter Sports Always wear appropriate and proper-fitting protective gear, including a helmet when skiing, sledding, snowboarding or playing hockey. Wear layers of close-fitting clothing; keep scarves tucked in. Fight Frostbite Be aware of the potential for frostbite, which can be associated with hypothermia and require emergency medical care. Children can be at a greater risk because they lose heat from their skin more rapidly. The areas most prone to frostbite are the nose, ears, hands, feet, face and head. Appropriate clothing can help reduce the risk of frostbite.
Parents may have to remind children playing outdoors in cold weather to come in before they get hypothermia. Snow Removal According to the U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission, more than 16,000 people are treated in emergency rooms annually for injuries sustained while removing snow manually; more than 6,000 while using a snowblower. To clear snow safely: • Remove twigs, rocks and toys or other items from your driveway and sidewalks before the snow starts. • Check with your physician and be sure you are healthy enough for strenuous activity. • Dress appropriately, including a head covering, mittens or gloves, socks and slipresistant shoes. • Clear snow early and often and pace yourself; take frequent breaks and stay hydrated. • Use an appropriate shovel for your height and ability and use proper lifting technique. Don’t twist and throw the snow over your shoulder. • If you use a snowblower, remember
to protect your eyes and ears with safety glasses and earplugs, especially with gas-powered models. • Never put your hand inside the machine. If it jams, turn it off and remove the jam with a solid object. • Do not leave the device unattended when it is turned on. • Never add fuel when the engine is running. • Stay away from the engine. It can be hot enough to burn. • Be aware of the power cord, if using an electric model, so you don’t trip over it. • Never remove any safety devices. • Keep children 15 and younger indoors when snowblowers are in use. Maximize Your Next Refund With These Tax Deductions And Credits (NAPSA)-According to the Internal Revenue Service, more than 101 million income tax refunds were issued in 2013, averaging $2,651 each. The average was a couple hundred dollars more for taxpayers who elected to have their refund directly deposited into a bank account. Averages in 2014 will likely be similar because of tax legislation passed in the first couple days of 2013, according to TaxACT spokesperson Jessi Dolmage. “The now-permanent and extended tax breaks will benefit taxpayers of all situations, including families, college students and homeowners,” said Dolmage. The credits and deductions available on federal returns due April 15, 2014 include: • Child and Dependent Care Credit-The maximum amount of child and dependent care expenses eligible for the credit is now $3,000 if you have one child or $6,000 if you have two or more children. These increased amounts are permanent. • Child Tax Credit-The credit has been made permanent at $1,000 per child under the age of 17 at the end of 2013. This credit may be claimed in addition to the Child and Dependent Care
Credit. • Tuition and fees deduction-If you, your spouse or your dependent is enrolled in a postsecondary institution, you may be able to deduct tuition expenses as an adjustment to income, even if you don’t itemize deductions. You generally take this deduction if you don’t qualify for an education credit or other tax break for the same expenses. • American Opportunity Tax Credit-The maximum amount of this credit for the first four years of postsecondary education costs in a degree or certificate program is $2,500 per student. Costs may include tuition, fees and course materials (books). If you don’t owe any tax, you may also be eligible to receive up to 40 percent of the credit ($1,000) as a refund. • Educator expenses deduction-Elementary and secondary educators can deduct up to $250 in related job expenses as an adjustment to income, even if not itemizing deductions. Unlike most employee expenses, educator expenses are not reduced by 2 percent of your adjusted gross income. • Deduction for mortgage insurance premiums-If you pay mortgage insurance premiums, also known as private mortgage insurance (PMI), you may be able to
According to the IRS, taxpayers who have their refund directly deposited generally receive larger refunds.
deduct premiums as mortgage interest. • Alternative Minimum Tax-The AMT was created to ensure wealthy taxpayers receiving large tax benefits pay some tax. It will now be adjusted for inflation each year so fewer taxpayers are subject to the tax. The exemption amount rises in 2013 to $51,900 ($80,800 for married couples filing jointly). For married individuals filing separately, the exemption is $40,400. • Adoption credit-You may qualify for a credit equal to up to $12,970 of your adoption expenses including fees, court costs, attorney fees, traveling expense and other expenses directly related to and for the principal purpose of the legal adoption of an eligible child. If
your employer provides adoption benefits, you may also be able to exclude up to the same amount from your income. Both a credit and exclusion may be claimed for the same adoption but not for the same expense. • State and local sales tax deduction-For 2013, you can still deduct state and local sales taxes. You can take this deduction or a deduction for state income tax-but not both. As with most tax benefits, you must meet certain criteria in order to claim them on your tax return, and even if you are eligible, you may not qualify for the entire amount. Online and mobile tax preparation programs make it easy to do your own taxes and confidently claim all your deductions and credits. As you answer simple questions, the program completes your tax forms and checks for errors and potential opportunities. One of the top solutions, TaxACT, even helps you plan for next year with guidance for the implications of the Affordable Care Act on your taxes. Learn more about these deductions and credits at www.irs.gov, and file your federal taxes free at www.taxact.com.
Time- And Money-Saving Grocery Tips (NAPSA)-If you are like most Americans, you not only want to save money at the grocery store, but you want to save time, too. In fact, in a recent survey conducted by SupermarketGuru.com, 25 percent of respondents said they have resorted to grocery shopping online just to save time. How can you be sure to get the best value in the shortest time possible? Here are a few hints from Phil Lempert, the Supermarket Guru, that can help: • First, plan the timing of your shopping trip carefully. The supermarket’s busiest time is between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., so avoid the supermarket “rush hour.” • Use all your shopping resources. Check the store’s circulars and use the latest technology to help enhance your trip. For example, ReadySetEat.com not only lets you plan your meals and ingredients ahead of time, it instantly shares what items are on sale at a retailer near you. • Discounts are often worth

expiration dates at the store and opt for portion-controlled frozen foods. Single-serve and family-size meals, such as Marie Callender’s or Bertolli frozen meals, are great examples of portion-controlled meals for yourself or your whole family. • Also, remember to store leftovers properly. Refrigerate below 40° F within two hours or one hour during hot weather (90° F and above). Place unused raw vegetables in a sealable plastic bag and squeeze out excess air. For unused canned ingredients, remove from the original can, put them in a sealable container and cover tightly to maintain optimal flavor. Fresh vegetables should be blanched quickly in boiling water, drained and then placed in a bag. Poultry and meats can be frozen in their original wrappers, but then placed in a freezer bag. Keep these tips in mind for your next grocery shopping trip, and you may find that you can come home with more money in your pocket and more time to spend with your family.

FUN BY THE NUMBERS Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test! HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle.

MARCH BIRTHSTONE
APRIL BIRTHSTONE
AQUAMARINE: THE SAILOR’S STONE
DIAMOND: THE “UNCONQUERABLE” DIAMOND
(PX) — Aquamarine, the lovely bluegreen member of the beryl family, has been used in jewelry since the third century B.C. and is one of the most fashionable gemstones today. For hundreds of years it was called “The Sailor’s Stone,” due to its sea-like colors, ranging from a pale sky blue to a deep blue-green, and was thought to protect sailors and people traveling over water. The earliest aquamarine probably came from India, where it was highly regarded by Hindu mystics as an aid to promoting mental clarity and improving one’s public speaking. Medieval alchemists believed aquamarine would prevent excess water retention in the body and enhance the digestive and eliminative functions. In the medieval alchemical charts of gem properties, aquamarine is shown as ruling the kidneys, bladder and urethra. Nineteenth century Chinese carvers produced snuff bottles and delicate figurines out of larger pieces of aquamarine, because it is easy to carve and polishes beautifully. Even today, many people who believe in the spiritual properties of gemstones wear aquamarine to give them religious and mental inspiration, provide inner calm, and enhance both verbal and written communication. Aquamarine’s popularity helped make it a March birthstone earlier this century. Aquamarine always has been available in small sizes, from one-half carat up to 10-carat stones. However, finds in Brazil and Africa have made aquamarine of much larger sizes more accessible for use in jewelry. “The African material, called ‘Sancta Maria Africanus’ aqua, comes in sizes large enough to create major gem sculptures and is among the most beautiful aquamarine ever found,” says Joe Menzies, executive board member of the International Colored Stone Association. The Brazilian material ranges from pale blue-green to a deep blue with a green tint.
One of America’s premier jewelry designers, Henry Dunay, used a natural aquamarine to depict the River Danube in this oneof-a-kind 18-karat brooch he calls “Winter Evening In Budapest.”
The African aquamarine can come in such large sizes that world-famous gem artist Bernd Munsteiner of Germany carved a 10,613-carat, foot-tall sculpture named “Dom Pedro Maritimas” from a 30,000-carat rough aquamarine. Munsteiner used the “leftovers” from his sculpture to create close to 100 fantasy-cut gemstones and smaller sculptures from this fiery deep blue-green material. Aquamarine is tough, durable and takes an excellent polish, says Lynn Ramsey, president of the Jewelry Information Center. “Aquas can be worn in rings and bracelets with minimal risk if the settings are designed to protect the gems. Clear stones, called eye-clean, are free of inclusions to the naked eye and can be worn under most conditions. Avoid steam cleaning or excess heat.” Historically, Brazilian and African aquamarines have been routinely heattreated to enhance their color. Heating gemstones is a stable treatment and an accepted industry practice, says Ramsey. Recently, designers have begun combining aquamarines with golden citrines, emeralds or tsavorite garnets, sapphires, and pink tourmalines to provide fresh fashion color palettes. “You don’t have to be a sailor or a Marchborn baby to enjoy the beauty and sparkle of aquamarine,” says Ramsey. “It’s a yearround treasure of a gem.”
April is the luckiest month of all, since diamond is its birthstone. More and more women are dressing in these brilliant, dazzling gemstones as effortlessly as they throw on their favorite sweater. Actresses Gwyneth Paltrow and Halle Berry and super models Cindy Crawford and Stella Tennant, among others, are seen everywhere wearing their diamond solitaire necklaces. Most diamonds are more than 100 million years old, and many are more than three billion years old, making diamonds the oldest of all gemstones. They also are the hardest substance known to man, made of carbon that is crystallized deep within the earth. First discovered more than 3,000 years ago in India, diamonds are found today in remote parts of the world, like Australia, Russia, Botswana and South Africa. Their unique hardness and high refractive index have inspired legends. To the Greeks, they were teardrops from the gods. To the Romans, they came from the falling stars that tipped the arrow of Eros, the god of love. For Hindus, diamonds were the lightning that armed the hand of the god Indra. Today, diamonds are more popular than ever. “To have a piece of diamond jewelry is to have the quintessential piece of jewelry,” says Melvyn Kirtley, vice president and general manager of Tiffany’s flagship store on New York’s Fifth Ave. “The rarity, beauty and quality of diamonds through history has not changed. People still desire them and desire them more than ever.” Women now are buying diamonds for themselves, notes Lynn Ramsey, president of the Jewelry Information Center, a New York-based trade association. “What’s new is that customers are more educated, and as more and more women gain professional ranks, they want quality stones.” Vincent Polisano, a designer of the Diana Vincent collection of fine jewelry, says, “Over the last four years, the trend is toward women purchasing more important pieces of diamond jewelry, mostly in diamond earrings and larger stones for solitaire rings and necklaces.” When it comes to wearing diamonds, there is no wrong way. Diamond brooches adorn business suits. Diamond studs are worn to the gym. This ground swell of
This 2.6-carat emerald-cut diamond ring from Hammerman is set in platinum. Three-stone engagement rings are growing in popularity. wearing diamonds every day started a few years ago when designers like John Galliano and Donna Karan popularized them on their runways. Most recently, major European designers used elaborate Belle Époque settings and Oscar de la Renta showed diamonds exclusively in his collections. A lot of upwardly mobile professional women took note. They are today’s diamond customers who want diamonds, can afford them and don’t have to wait for an engagement or 25th wedding anniversary to own them. Nor is there one style or trend that customers want. “The news in diamonds,” says Polisano, “is just a lot of wonderful work by many different designers.” Never before have so many American designers marketed diamond jewelry under their own names. Noteworthy are Henry Dunay, Whitney Boin, Jose Hess and Michael Bondanza. And, at Tiffany’s, their classic six-prong setting always is popular, but the store’s Diamonds By the Yard necklaces of round diamonds set in platinum or 18-karat gold typify the diamonds-for-day trend. When purchasing diamonds, customers adhere to the four C’s — cut, color, clarity and carat weight — but increasingly they seek finer cut stones. “Today, customers understand that it is the cutting that releases the true brilliance of a stone,” says Polisano. With something so precious, remember to rely on a well-established jeweler with a wide selection of merchandise who is qualified to determine a diamond’s value and quality. Also, consider diamonds in pink, yellow and blue, which are gaining popularity. Little wonder the Greeks named diamonds adamas. It means unconquerable.
