Grand Prizes—Winning Recipes By Young Chefs (NAPSI)—You could have a secret weapon for keeping your family healthy right in your own home: your kitchen table. That’s because research shows that children who help cook dinner with their family are more likely to have a healthier diet with more fruits and vegetables. To help families spend more time around the kitchen table and improve their lives, the UNCLE BEN’S® Brand launched the Ben’s Beginners™ Cooking Contest. It strives to inspire healthful lifelong eating habits by getting children interested in cooking at an early age. Through the contest, the UNCLE BEN’S® Brand has been able to award nine school cafeteria makeovers in just two years. Its two grandprize winners have been able to impact their schools for years to come with their entries. Check out the updates from their schools and their prize-winning recipes below. Sydney Fialkow from Atlanta, Ga. Sydney Fialkow from Atlanta, Ga., won the first Ben’s Beginners™ Cooking Contest Grand Prize in 2012 for Epstein School. She and her mother, Stacy, cooked up her winning rice and chicken recipe

and rallied their community to support her entry by voting online. Epstein School was able to use the prize funds as a springboard to launch its capital campaign and update many areas of the school. It began by purchasing new seating for the cafeteria and a yogurt machine. Check out Sydney’s winning recipe: Sydney’s Rice and Chicken 1 cup chopped onions 4-6 boneless skinless chicken breast fillets (about 11⁄2 lb. 1⁄2 tsp. salt 1⁄2 tsp. coarse-ground black pepper 1⁄2 tsp. garlic powder 2 cups chicken broth 1 cup UNCLE BEN’S® ORIGI NAL CONVERT ED® Brand Rice 1⁄2 cup chopped red bell pepper 1⁄2 cup chopped green bell pepper 1 cup frozen green peas 1 tsp. chopped fresh cilantro 1 tsp. dried oregano As needed, yellow food coloring (optional) Preheat oven to 350° F. Spray glass baking dish evenly with cooking spray. Place onions in baking dish; top with chicken fillets. Season the chicken evenly with salt, black pepper and garlic powder. Pour chicken broth

into baking dish and bake for 20 minutes. Remove baking dish from oven. Transfer chicken breast fillets to container and reserve. In baking dish, add rice, bell peppers, peas, cilantro and oregano. If desired, add 2 shakes of yellow food coloring. Stir rice mixture. Arrange reserved chicken breast fillets over rice. Cover and bake for 25 minutes. Remove from oven, gently stir rice mixture, cover with foil and bake an additional 10 minutes or until chicken is fully cooked, rice is tender and all liquid is absorbed. Claire Noles from Boaz, Ala. In 2013, the second year of the contest, Claire Noles of Boaz, Ala., won the Grand Prize for her school, Corley Elementary. Since winning, Corley purchased new tables for the cafeteria, a sound system and projection screen with the prize funds. The school is currently still finalizing its new-andimproved cafeteria to unveil later this school year. The updated cafeteria equipment and lunchroom facility will help the school prepare food on-site; lunch was

previously prepared at another location and driven in each day. “All in all, this prize money will greatly impact the students in our community by giving them an opportunity to eat freshly prepared and healthier meals,” said Rachel Noles, Claire’s mother. “This has been the gift that just keeps on giving!” Check out Claire’s delicious and easy recipe: Claire’s Crockpot Chicken and Rice Supreme 6-8 chicken breasts 1 can of cream of chicken soup 1 can of cream of mushroom soup 1⁄2 cup of green chilies 1 tsp of salt 1 tsp of pepper 1 tsp of butter 1 tsp of “secret seasoning” (cel ery salt) 1 bag of Uncle Ben’s Creamy Four Cheese Rice Mix all the ingredients together in a crockpot and cook on low for 8-10 hours. (Not Your Grandmother’s Ring) (PX) — If the name “garnet” reminds you of the red or brown stone in your grandmother’s ring, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. Garnet is actually the group name for a family of gemstones that come in every color except blue. They’re beautiful, durable, and most garnets are affordable. Best of all, more jewelry designers and manufacturers have discovered the joys of garnet, so you can find garnet jewelry at most price levels. “In all garnets, the brighter the color and the larger the gem, the more it costs,” says Lynn Ramsey, president of the Jewelry Information Center, a New York-based trade association. The majority of garnets come in sizes smaller than 10 carats, but a few family members grow much bigger. The name “garnet” comes from the Roman word granatus, meaning “seed,” as the gems were thought to resemble pomegranate seeds. The most common garnets are the red to red-brown varieties that people know best. Since ancient times, the red variety, called pyrope (from the Greek word for “fire”), often was confused with rubies and red spinels. Red garnets can show almost as much fire as rubies. Until the 18th century, garnets often were worn by soldiers to heal wounds and stop blood flow, as red stones were thought to influence the blood. They also were said to promote true love, warn of danger by changing color, and protect the wearer’s home from fire and lightning. Yellow, orange and brown garnets carry exotic names like almandite, topazolite, hessonite, spessartite, malaya and mandarinite. Yellow-orange to brown almandites are most common, and light yellow topazolites are rarest, but new finds in Africa and Asia have made all yellow, gold and orange garnets more available. Malaya garnets, whose name derives from a Bantu word meaning “deceiver,” can have the striking orangy-pink color of rare padparadscha sapphires or the gold of citrine. Garnets in all these colors were believed to stimulate energy, increase sexual vitality and promote compatibility in lovers. If you prefer spring or summer greens, tsavorite garnets from Africa come in clear light greens to rich dark greens and are more affordable than fine emeralds. Yellow-green to midgreen demantoid garnets are mostly found in antique jewelry.

“Demantoid garnet is not widely mined today, so it is hard to find, but the color is exquisite,” says Owen Bordelon, of New Orleans, former president of the American Gem Trade Association. A translucent green garnet, misnamed “Transvaal Jade,” looks like light to medium milky green jade with tiny black spots. Called hydrogrossular garnet, it often has been used as an affordable jade substitute. Mothers in medieval Europe used to hang this garnet above their baby’s cradle for good health and sweet dreams. Green gemstones also were said to bring prosperity, calm the nerves and protect wearers from emotional stress. The pink to reddish-purple colors are in rhodolite garnets, the largest transparent species. Available in sizes as big as a grapefruit, rhodolites recently were found more widely in Africa. Deep purple-pink varieties are the most expensive. The lighter, sparkling bright pinks can resemble pink sapphires. They were believed to attract romance and cure broken hearts. Though garnets are tough, like all gemstones, special care must be taken, as some varieties can chip, according to Ramsey. “For jewels worn often, like rings, look for settings that protect the gem with metal,” she says. Also avoid steaming, abrupt temperature changes and acids, because they might damage gems. Ultrasound or warm water with mild detergent is recommended for cleaning. As a January birthstone, Aquarius zodiac stone and the second wedding anniversary gem, garnet provides a versatile family of affordable gems that can be enjoyed year-round.

Ever since mankind first discovered amethyst around 3000 B.C., this accessible gemstone has been believed to possess a wide variety of amuletic qualities and properties. The ancient Egyptians believed amethyst could keep a person from being poisoned. In medieval times, amethyst often was put under one’s pillow to cure insomnia and bring pleasant dreams. Medieval churchmen used amethyst rings and jewels to promote divine revelations and wisdom, since amethyst was considered a symbol of Christian love and sacrifice. Amethyst also was said to enhance courage and creativity, promote intuition, psychic development and even self-esteem, deflect anger, and protect the wearer against evil. Through the ages, this lovely purple member of the quartz family has been used for everything from love charms to symbols of royalty. Yet, for all its noble traditions, amethyst is a surprisingly affordable gem. “Though the most prized colors of amethyst are still relatively rare, especially in larger sizes, there are plenty of equally beautiful amethysts available in smaller sizes and lighter purples that are affordable enough for any budget,” explains Lynn Ramsey, president of the Jewelry Information Center. Indeed, amethyst can be found in colors ranging from a pastel lavender to a dark purple that is almost black. The darkest amethysts occasionally are heat-treated to lighten their color, but light to medium purples usually are left in their natural colors. “Amethysts that are heat-treated retain their color remarkably well, but it’s still wise to keep any amethysts away from strong heat and steam cleaning,” advises Douglas K. Hucker, executive director of the American Gem Trade Association. Heat-treating is a stable and accepted process, which has been used by the jewelry industry for thousands of years, says Hucker. However, when buying any colored gemstone, ask if the stone is of natural origin or if it has been treated in any way to enhance its beauty. One of the most prized colors of

amethyst is a deep, pure purple with flashes of red fire that used to be called “Siberian amethyst” after the Siberian deposits from which this particular color came. Deposits in Uruguay and Africa have made the darker colors of amethyst more available, but most amethyst used for jewelry is in the medium-purple range generally associated with the gem. Occasionally, amethyst in milky pastel colors or layered with white quartz is used in jewelry or carved into sculptures. Amethyst can be found in sizes ranging from very tiny accent stones to finely polished gems of more than 1,000 carats, the latter found mostly in private collections and museums. Gems for jewelry are usually between half a carat, popular for earrings, and 10 carats, most often seen as the center stone in rings, pendants and bracelets. Even 20- to 40-carat amethysts in the medium to lighter colors are still affordable enough for fine jewelry. Many jewelry designers and gem carvers like to use amethyst because it is easy to cut and polishes so beautifully. Cupidâ€™s Connection To Love Hearts tend to be aflutter on Valentine's Day, and Cupid just might be the scoundrel behind those starry-eyed feelings. Just who is this arrow-wielding Cupid and how did he become associated with Valentine's Day? God of love and desire Ancient Greeks and Romans were prolific storytellers and used mythology to explain many of the mysteries of life. Certain feelings and happenings on Earth were attributed to the moods and actions of Gods who presided over the people. In Roman mythology, Cupid was the god of desire, erotic love, attraction and affection. His Greek counterpart was Eros, while in Latin Cupid was known as Amor. According to myth, Cupid was the son of the winged messenger Mercury and Venus, the goddess of love. Cupid's machinations were often guided by his mother's hand, and m a t c h m a k i n g remained his most well-known trait. As time went on and Christian influences pushed out ancient Greek and Roman beliefs, Cupid was seen as an angel of heavenly and earthly love. Cupid could

easily be mistaken for many other angelic cherubim portrayed in artwork during the Renaissance period. Eventually Cupid became a popular icon of Valentine's Day. Cupid's appearance Cupid has appeared in different ways in illustrations and other artwork throughout history. Sometimes he is depicted as a winged, chubby infant carrying a bow and a quiver of arrows. Classical Greek art depicts Cupid as a slender, winged youth. The reason Cupid has wings is because lovers are known to be flighty and change their moods and minds with some frequency. He is boyish because love is irrational, and he carries arrows and a torch because love can both wound but also inflame the heart. Cupid has traditionally been portrayed as benevolent, if not mischievous. After all, his goal is to bring two lovers together. His arsenal was equipped with two different kinds of arrows. People pierced by gold-tipped arrows would succumb to uncontrollable desire. Those afflicted by an arrow with a blunt tip of lead desired only to flee. "Cupid and Psyche" Cupid may have been responsible for bringing many people

together with his special arrows, but he also was granted the opportunity to experience love himself. According to the myth of "Cupid and Psyche," Psyche was a beautiful woman whose appear-

ance rivaled even that of Venus. People grew enchanted by her beauty and started to neglect the worship of Venus. Jealous of this attention, Venus asked Cupid to make Psyche fall in love with a monster. But when Cupid saw how beautiful Psyche was, he accidentally dropped the arrow meant for her and pricked himself instead. He immediately became enamored with her. Psyche, who had not been able to marry like her other sisters, feared she had been cursed by the gods in some way. She was sent away to avoid the premonition

of marrying a monster, but Cupid, hidden from sight, ended up visiting Psyche and gaining her trust and affection. The pair then married, although Psyche had never seen her husband in the light of day because he forbade her to look upon him. After all, he was a god and she was a mortal. One night Psyche disobeyed Cupid's edict and snuck a peek by candlelight. She was amazed by his beauty and became startled, wounding herself on one of his arrows. Psyche ended up dropping hot wax on Cupid, which woke him up and he ran off. Psyche wandered endlessly trying to find her lost husband and had to go through various trials established by a still-jealous Venus. In one of her trials, she ended up getting put to sleep, but Cupid revived her and pleaded with Jupiter to make Psyche immortal and let her be his true wife. Jupiter ultimately granted that wish. Cupid will forever be connected to the concepts of love and affection, which is why he has become an unofficial symbol of Valentine's Day.
