Memory lapses are often assumed to be an accepted side effect of aging, but such an assumption is incorrect, as there are many steps men and women can take to maintain their mental acuity well into their golden years. 路 Find time for cardiovascular exercise. Cardiovascular exercise can help men and women maintain healthy weights and reduce their risk for potentially deadly ailments like diabetes and heart disease. But cardiovascular exercise also can boost brain power. Cardiovascular exercise pumps oxygen-rich blood

to the brain, and that blood contains glucose that can fuel brain cells. Cardiovascular exercise also strengthens blood vessels, which can help prevent potentially devastating diseases, such as stroke, that can have a lasting and negative impact on cognitive function. 路 Find time for friends and family.

Many people need no reason to socialize, but those that do can now cite boosting brain function as a great reason to get together with family and friends. Routine socialization can keep a brain sharp by reducing its levels of cortisol, a potentially destructive hormone brought on by stress.

Researchers also believe that routine interaction with other people stimulates structures in the brain's

frontal lobe that are likely responsible for planning, decision making and response control. 路 Squeeze in a nap every so often.

Naps can have a reenergizing effect on men and women, but a study from German researchers also found that naps also can improve memory. In the study, researchers divided participants into three groups: people who would stay awake for 60 minutes; people who would sleep for six minutes; and people who would sleep for 30 to 45 minutes. After the hour was up, participants were given a word recall test, and those who slept performed better on the test than those who hadn't. But the development that was perhaps most interesting was that those

who slept for just six minutes performed just as well on the test as those who slept for far longer, leading researchers to suggest that men and women need not take long naps to improve their memories. 路 Include fish in your diet. A study from researchers at Chicago's Rush University Medical Center found that people who eat fish once per week have a 60 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease than those who do not include fish in their weekly diets. Researchers credit this lower risk to DHA, an omega3 fatty acid that is found in both the brain and in fish such as salmon and tuna.

The origin of Baby New Year People from around the world celebrate to mark the arrival of the new year. One New Year tradition that has survived through the centuries is that of Baby New Year and its image of a toddler wearing only a diaper, sash and top hat.

Baby New Year can be traced to 600 B.C. in Greece and Egypt.

Historians note that Greeks believed Dionysus, their God of fertility and wine, was reborn every New Year as a spirit of fertility and luck. Greeks would celebrate with parades featuring a baby in a cradle to represent the birth of Dionysus.

Ancient Egyptians used a baby as a symbol to represent rebirth as

well. The child symbolized the birth of the new year and the passing of the old one.

Over the years, the tradition of Baby New Year has taken on another

meaning as well. Some people believe the baby begins as an infant in January and then quickly ages until he is elderly at the end of December.

Some stories even suggest Baby New Year ages until he becomes Father Time.

Early Christians did not like the tradition of Baby New Year, feeling it was a pagan celebration.

However, the Church eventually revised its standing when it saw how much people stood behind the imagery of a baby representing rebirth. The C h r i s t i a n Church allowed members to celebrate the new year with a baby, and it was believed the practice symbolized the birth and hope offered by baby Jesus.

Baby New Year symbolism has even been used

for marketing purposes.

Retailers realized the cherubic image would attract consumers, which is why it is now used to promote New Year's sales.

But Baby New Year is more than just a successful marketing tool.

Each year, many cities and villages name their own Baby New Year, which is the first child born on January 1.

Some attempts to name a Baby New Year for an entire country have been made, but there have been no official pronouncements, as so many children have been born around midnight on New Year's Eve that it has been too close to call which baby arrived first.

Start of the New Year Changes Through History Every year at the stroke of midnight on December 31, people around the world usher in a new year with fanfare and a host of unique traditions. From first-footing to smashing dinner plates to watching a crystal ball descend from the sky, tradition dominates the dawn of a new year.

Though the new year is now celebrated in January, this was not always the case. Prior to 700 B.C., the months of January and February did not exist, so the arrival of a new year was celebrated on March 1 in adherence to the Roman calendar. Prior to that, new year celebrations took place mid-March, right around the time of the vernal equinox. Various cultures and peoples tied the new year to certain seasons, celebrat-

ing a new year on the autumnal equinox or the winter solstice.

The Roman calendar consisted of 10 months, the names of which are still reflected in the Gregorian calendar that is so widely used today. For example, the months of September t h r o u g h December get their names from the Latin words for seven, eight, nine, and ten. On the Roman calendar, a year began with March, as this was seen as a time of rebirth for animals and the

environment. The second king of Rome, Numa Pontilius, added the months of January and February, and then the new year was moved to January from M a r c h .

However, some people still celebrated the new year on March 1, perhaps due to the slowness at which information moved between cultures. It wasn't until the ancient Roman calendar was eliminated and a new lunar one implemented by Julius Caesar

in 46 B.C. that the new year was widely and consistently observed in January.

During the Middle Ages, celebrations honoring a new year were considered pagan and January 1 was abolished as the beginning of the year by religious groups. During these years, dates such as December 25, March 1, March 25, and Easter were used to mark a new year throughout Christian Europe.

January 1 eventually was restored as the start of the new year when the Gregorian calendar was introduced in the 16th century. From then on, people near and far could say goodbye to another year in December and welcome the arrival of a new one come the first of January.

Onion Rings With A Spicy Twist Onion rings are a popular side dish. Though many people reserve their consumption of onion rings for nights out at the diner, onion ring afficionados need not wait until their next night out on the town to enjoy their favorite side dish, as onion rings can easily be made right at home.

Those who want to add a little extra kick to their onion rings can do just that thanks to the following recipe for "Rings of Fire" courtesy of Bob Blumer's "Surreal Gourmet Bites" (Chronicle Books).

RINGS OF FIRE Yields 12 2

Vidalia onions or

other sweet onion 11/2 cups flour 2 serrano chiles, minced (plus a couple in reserve) 2 teaspoons salt plus more to season fin ished rings 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 cup beer 1 tablespoon Tabasco (ideally chipotle Tabasco) 3 cups peanut oil for frying Slice onions in 1/4-inch slices and separate into rings. Select the 12 largest, most aesthetically pleasing rings.

In a medium bowl, add 1 cup of the flour, the serranos, 2 teaspoons salt, the

cayenne, and the pepper.

Slowly whisk in beer and add the hot sauce. The batter should be the consistency of thin pancake batter.

In a medium, tall pot,

heat oil to 350 F. In a medium bowl, add remaining 1/2 cup flour. Toss onion rings in flour to coat. Shake off excess flour.

Dip one onion ring in batter until thoroughly coated, then fry for approximately 2 minutes, or until golden. Turn once during frying.

Remove and drain on paper towels. Let cool, then season with salt and taste. Count to 30, then assess the heat level. Add more of everything hot according to your pain threshold (and that of your guests). Continue frying rings in small batches and serve immediately.

Distribute the dough equally among the prepared muffin cups and fill them about three-quarters full. With a sharp knife that has been dipped in tapioca flour, cut a deep slash in the top of each roll. Dip the knife in flour before each cut, and don't worry if a little extra tapioca flour is left on top of the rolls.

Preheat the oven to 375 F. Let the dough stand in a warm, draft-free place to rise until doubled in bulk, about 40 minutes.

Brush the top of each roll with melted butter. Bake until the tops are a nice golden brown, about 20 minutes. If they start to brown too quickly, loosely tent the rolls with aluminum foil.

Remove the rolls to wire racks to cool. If you are serving them immediately, it's nice to put them in a tea towel-lined blanket to keep warm.

Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

“Auld Lang Syne” is a New Year’s Tradition.

New Year's Eve festivities peak when the official countdown of the clock begins. After the ball drops and midnight has arrived, revelers cheer to the new year and exchange kisses and well wishes.

Once such wishes have been exchanged, many people begin to sing "Auld Lang Syne." But few know what "Auld Lang Syne" means or why it is sung on New Year's Eve. Confusion regarding this song is almost as notable as the tradition of singing it. Many people mumble through the lyrics because they never bothered to learn them.

"Auld Lang Syne" is a Scottish composition that is well over 200 years old.

Written by Robert Burns in the 1700s, the author never intended for the song to become a staple of the holiday season. It was originally a poem that was later put to the tune of a traditional folk song.

The title translates rough-

ly in English as "old long since," or "long, long ago."

The song pays homage to times gone by and past experiences.

The song has been performed at group jamborees, funerals and other special occasions all over the world, but it is best known for its affiliation with New Year's festivities. The man behind that affiliation may be Canadian musician Guy Lombardo, whose band used "Auld Lang Syne" as a bridge between two radio programs during a live New Year's Eve performance in 1929. Coincidentally, the song was played directly after the clock struck midnight, laying the groundwork for a New Year's Eve tradition. Now "Auld Lang Syne" has forever been tied to well-intentioned resolutions and sappy slaps on the back. Despite selling millions of records, Lombardo became more famous for his New Year's Eve song than anything else.

Confusion over "Auld Lang Syne" remains to this

day. It has been the butt of jokes in popular culture, even earning a nod in the movie "When Harry Met Sally." Harry laments to Sally that he never quite understood what the song meant and ponders whether it is about forgetting about friends or remembering them. Sally sums it up by saying the song is simply about old friends.

That is the interpretation many New Year's Eve celebrants embrace as they toast to the new year and sing their hearts out. For those who never bothered to learn or have forgotten the words to this staple of New Year's celebrations, here is the popularized English translation sung most often.

Unique New Year’s Traditions From Across the World Some people may find it strange to withstand freezing temperatures and gusty winds for hours on end just to stand in the center of Times Square in New York City to catch a glimpse of a bejeweled ball drop at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. Yet this tradition may seem tame when compared to other unique rituals that take place around the world come New Year's Eve. North Americans may be singing "Auld Lang Syne" and toasting to good fortune with a glass of bubbly, but elsewhere traditions can be somewhat more eccentric. In some spots of South America, for example, revelers put on brightly colored underwear to ring in the New Year. Red underpants signal a person looking for love, while yellow means they're seeking money. The following are some other unique New Year's traditions. · Tossing the dishes: In Denmark, individuals toss dishes at other

people's front doors. Those who end up with the greatest number of broken dishes at their home's threshold are considered lucky, as they have an abundance of loyal friends. · Right foot: Start off the new year on the right foot by literally stepping forward with your right foot at exactly 12:00 a.m. in Argentina. · Burning in effigy: People in Ecuador burn photographs and paper-filled scarecrows at midnight.

This is to look away from the past and bring good fortune for the future. · Good grapes: Spain residents attempt to stuff 12 grapes in their mouths at midnight. If they are successful, they are expected to achieve good luck for the next year.

Dressing in white: Residents of Brazil dress all in white on New Year's Eve to ward away bad spirits.

Many also gather at the beach to toss floral offerings into the water to appease the goddess Yemaja, in the hopes she will grant them requests for the upcoming year.

· Good travels: In Columbia, people walk around their blocks with empty suitcases to encourage traveling in the new year. · Ringing bells: Japanese ring all of their bells 108 times in accordance with the Buddhist belief that this will bring cleanliness. People in Japan also believe it is good luck to begin the new year smiling. · Putting up your dukes: Every year at the end of December, people in a small Peruvian village engage in fist fights to settle all of their differences. Afterward, they begin the new year with a clean slate. · First foot: Immediately after the clock strikes 12, the people of Scotland start first-footing. This means being the first person across a friend or neighbor's threshold bearing gifts of food, whiskey and financial prosperity. People in Greece celebrate in much the same way via the tradition of Pothariko. · Molten tin: In Finland, residents find the nearest piece of tin to melt.

The molten tin is poured into a

horseshoe-shaped ladle and then dropped into cold water. The random shapes that form are interpreted in various ways to indicate what's to come in the year ahead. · Feats of skill: Single women in Belarus spend New Year's Eve hoping to increase their odds of getting married. Ladies compete in games to see who will be the next to get hitched. These games may include seeing who will be the first to be approached by a rooster. The winner is the next person to become betrothed. · Appliance toss: In downtown Johannesburg, South African locals throw old appliances out of their windows to ring in the new year.

All things round: Round-shaped foods are served and consumed in the Philippines. Filipinos believe round shapes that represent coins symbolize prosperity.

GLORIOUS GARNETS

(PX) — Turquoise is one of the oldest and best-known opaque gemstones, found widely among ancient Egyptian, Sumerian and Mesopotamian artifacts dating back before 3000 B.C. The name turquoise means “Turkish stone,” because the trade route that brought the gem to Europe came through Turkey.

The first known deposits were found in ancient Turkey, then later in Egypt.

Turquoise, with its robin’s egg blue hue, has graced the necks of Egyptian pharaohs and adorned early Native Americans in their ceremonial dress.

Cleopatra probably used ground-up turquoise for eye paint, as well as wearing turquoise in her jewelry. Tutankhamen’s tomb was filled with examples of turquoise inlay, beads, sculpture and slabs used in everything from jewelry and furniture to the great sarcophagus and death masks.

From its beginnings, turquoise was not exclusively a gem for the rich. Cavalry soldiers in most ancient armies carried pieces of turquoise or wore turquoise rings to keep them from falling off their horses. Children in several cultures were given turquoise charms to protect them from harm, prevent nightmares and to grant them restful sleep.

During the 16th century, turquoise was used as currency by the Southwest Indians. They believed the gem could bring spoils to the warrior, animals to the hunter and happiness to all. Four centuries later, turquoise became December’s best-known birthstone.

Turquoise also is the 11th wedding anniversary gem.

Turquoise comes in many colors and qualities. It can be light to medium blue, greenish blue to green, or even a yellowish green. Some types have veins of a dark material called matrix; they are known as spiderweb turquoise.

Douglas Hucker, president of American Gem Trade Association, explains, “In valuing turquoise for use in jewelry, the best material is an intense, even medium blue with no matrix and low porosity, so it takes a good polish. The cleaner and bluer the material, the more valuable it is considered.”

The United States now is the world’s leading producer of turquoise. The turquoise in this necklace, by Peyote Bird Designs, was found in Kingsman, AZ. Though most turquoise is used in its natural state, thin pieces sometimes are backed with an epoxy to add thickness and strength to stones otherwise too difficult to be cut.

Lighter pieces sometimes are impregnated with a colorless wax or plastic to seal the pores and deepen color. As with any gemstone, ask the jeweler if the stone has been treated in any way that might affect its care or cleaning.

Lynn Ramsey of the Jewelry Information Center advises, “Clean turquoise in warm, soapy water. It is possible that perspiration, skin oils and cosmetics can discolor some turquoise over time, as the gem is sensitive to acids. Don’t use ultrasonic or steam cleaning on turquoise.

With a little care, your turquoise jewelry will stay lovely for years.”

Turquoise is as beautiful, popular and affordable as it was 5,000 years ago. With new sources being found in China and Australia, as well as the established mines in the United States, Mexico and Chile, turquoise will continue to be a gem that is as easy on the budget as it is on the eye.

(Not Your Grandmother’s Ring) (PX) — If the name “garnet” reminds you of the red or brown stone in your grandmother’s ring, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. Garnet is actually the group name for a family of gemstones that come in every color except blue. They’re beautiful, durable, and most garnets are affordable.

Best of all, more jewelry designers and manufacturers have discovered the joys of garnet, so you can find garnet jewelry at most price levels. “In all garnets, the brighter the color and the larger the gem, the more it costs,” says Lynn Ramsey, president of the Jewelry Information Center, a New York-based trade association. The majority of garnets come in sizes smaller than 10 carats, but a few family members grow much bigger.

The name “garnet” comes from the Roman word granatus, meaning “seed,” as the gems were thought to resemble pomegranate seeds.

The most common garnets are the red to red-brown varieties that people know best. Since ancient times, the red variety, called pyrope (from the Greek word for “fire”), often was confused with rubies and red spinels. Red garnets can show almost as much fire as rubies.

Until the 18th century, garnets often were worn by soldiers to heal wounds and stop blood flow, as red stones were thought to influence the blood. They also were said to promote true love, warn of danger by changing color, and protect the wearer’s home from fire and lightning.

Yellow, orange and brown garnets carry exotic names like almandite, topazolite, hessonite, spessartite, malaya and mandarinite. Yellow-orange to brown almandites are most common, and light yellow topazolites are rarest, but new finds in Africa and Asia have made all yellow, gold and orange garnets more available. Malaya garnets, whose name derives from a Bantu word meaning “deceiver,” can have the striking orangy-pink color of rare padparadscha sapphires or the gold of citrine.

Garnets in all these colors were believed to stimulate energy, increase sexual vitality and promote compatibility in lovers.

If you prefer spring or summer greens, tsavorite garnets from Africa come in clear light greens to rich dark greens and are more affordable than fine emeralds.

Yellow-green to midgreen demantoid garnets are mostly found in antique jewelry.

Designer Chris Correia used pyramidshaped rhodolite garnets with diamonds in these 18-karat gold earrings.

“Demantoid garnet is not widely mined today, so it is hard to find, but the color is exquisite,” says Owen Bordelon, of New Orleans, former president of the American Gem Trade Association.

A translucent green garnet, misnamed “Transvaal Jade,” looks like light to medium milky green jade with tiny black spots.

Called hydrogrossular garnet, it often has been used as an affordable jade substitute.

Mothers in medieval Europe used to hang this garnet above their baby’s cradle for good health and sweet dreams. Green gemstones also were said to bring prosperity, calm the nerves and protect wearers from emotional stress.

The pink to reddish-purple colors are in rhodolite garnets, the largest transparent species. Available in sizes as big as a grapefruit, rhodolites recently were found more widely in Africa. Deep purple-pink varieties are the most expensive. The lighter, sparkling bright pinks can resemble pink sapphires. They were believed to attract romance and cure broken hearts.

Though garnets are tough, like all gemstones, special care must be taken, as some varieties can chip, according to Ramsey. “For jewels worn often, like rings, look for settings that protect the gem with metal,” she says.

Also avoid steaming, abrupt temperature changes and acids, because they might damage gems. Ultrasound or warm water with mild detergent is recommended for cleaning.
