Cooking Corner Sugar Cookies Still A Guys Can Enjoy Popular Treat Cooking Indoors, Too. The culinary arts sometimes do not necessarily come easily for men. While guys often look forward to grilling season, cooking indoors lacks the appeal of an open fire and friends and family munching on flame-broiled delights.
Cookies come in many flavors, shapes and sizes. While cookies have evolved over the years, one favorite remains a staple for many: sugar cookies. Enjoyed among adults and children alike, sugar cookies, like the following recipe for "Old-Fashioned Sugar Cookies" from the "Better Homes and Gardens(R) New Cook Book" (Meredith Books), make a delicious midday snack or post-dinner treat. OLD-FASHIONED SUGAR COOKIES Makes about 48 cookies 1 cup butter, softened 1 1/2 cups sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 to 1/3 cup sugar 1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add the 11/2 cups sugar; beat until combined. Beat in eggs, cream of tartar, baking soda, vanilla, and salt until combined. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in remaining flour. Cover and chill for 2 to 3 hours. 2. Preheat oven to 375 F. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Roll balls in the 1/4 cup sugar to coat. Place balls 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. 3. Bake for 9 to 12 minutes or until light brown.
But cooking inside can be just as fun and rewarding as standing over the grill outdoors. Such is the case with the following recipe for "Pasta With Shrimp and Bacon" from Tucker Shaw's "Gentlemen, Start Your Ovens" (Chronicle Books).

Strawberry Shortcake Not Short on Taste or Admirers Few desserts are as universally beloved as strawberry shortcake. Perhaps that admiration is due to strawberries, a perfect complement to nearly any dessert. Those who love strawberries and dessert will no doubt fall in love all over again with the following recipe for "Celebration Strawberry Shortcake" courtesy of Eula Mae Dore's "Eula Mae's Cajun Kitchen" (Harvard Common Press). CELEBRATION STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE Makes 8 to 10 servings 1/2 cup (1 stick) plus 1 tablespoon butter, at room temperature 3 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 181/4 ounce box yellow cake mix 3 large eggs 1 cup water 2 cups cold heavy cream 1 teaspoon clear vanilla flavoring 1/3 cup confectioners' sugar 2 pints fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced 1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Butter three 9-inch cake pans with the 1 tablespoon butter. Sprinkle each evenly with the granulated sugar. Set aside. 2. Combine the cake mix, eggs, water, and remaining 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter in a large mixing bowl. Stir to mix well, then beat, using an electric mixer, for 2 minutes. 3. Pour equal amounts of the cake batter into the prepared cake pans. Bake until golden brown, about 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pans for about 2 minutes. Turn out of the pans onto a wire rack to cool completely. 4. In a large cold stainless steel or glass bowl, combine the heavy cream, vanilla, and confectioners' sugar and beat, using an electric mixer, at high speed until soft peaks form. 5. Place one of the cake layers on a cake plate, spread about one-third of the whipped cream on top of the cake, and arrange one-third of the strawberries over the cream. Top with the second layer and repeat the process. Top with the final layer and repeat the process. The cake can be served immediately or chilled

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20
ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20
ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20
Aries, social interaction will put a smile on your face. This week you will find you spend a lot of time with friends simply enjoying their company.
Reserve judgement for another time, Aries. When someone needs your advice, simply offer it instead of lecturing on what should have been done.
It will take a little effort on your part, Aries, to help someone feel your love. Once you get past the initial hurdle, all things will work out for the best. TAURUS – April 21/May 2 Sometimes things just don’t go your way, Taurus. This week you will experience a few hurdles that seem insurmountable. The fact is that you can handle them.
TAURUS – April 21/May 2
Taurus, if you question too many things, you will never get anything accomplished. Ambivalence leaves you feeling paralyzed. It’s time to make a move. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, recent admissions by someone close to you leaves you wondering if this person has ulterior motives. Take things at face value and don’t be so suspicious. CANCER – June 22/July 22 Cancer, planning a birthday bash for a loved one takes on new meaning. You’re ready to pull out all the stops and, if done right, this party has the makings of a night to remember. LEO – July 23/August 23 Leo, regardless of what you believe, the world will keep turning if you don’t have ultimate control of everything. Therefore, lighten up and share the workload. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Monetary issues come to the forefront, Virgo. Without some assistance, your accounts could dip much lower than you would like. Take action immediately. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, it’s time to focus on personal issues that need to be resolved. Once you tackle these things, you will have more free time to devote to guilty pleasures. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, you and your spouse or partner don’t see eye-to-eye on many things. This can lead to misunderstandings that need to be resolved. Exercise a little patience. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, a relationship that you thought might be long-term has ended prematurely. Don’t dwell on what might have been; move on to greener pastures this week. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, matters of the heart need to be temporarily set aside because you have other pressing requirements. Just don’t neglect family life for too long. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, sometimes you have to lighten up, otherwise people may not want to spend time with you. Now is the time to let loose and enjoy yourself. Try to make new friends. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20 Don’t get too lost in your own thoughts this week, Pisces. You need to be focused to handle a few tasks at hand.
TAURUS – April 21/May 2
There’s not much you can say or do to change someone’s mind. Instead of getting worked up about it, simply move on to someone who is more receptive. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, few things rile you up more than dishonesty. But don’t allow this person to get the better of you. Take the high road instead. CANCER – June 22/July 22 Cancer, it’s alright to tell someone the truth. However, sometimes you have to soften your words. Not every person is receptive to brutal honesty at all times. LEO – July 23/August 23 Leo, when you introduce a new idea, expect it to be met with some opposition. However, later in the week others will start to see the merits of the idea. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 The saying goes, “If you can’t beat them, join them.” For you, Virgo, these are words to live by this week. Don’t be the odd person out; join with the group. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, check your figures again because something simply isn’t adding up in your finances. You may need to ask a friend to go over things with you again. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, although you have attacked a problem from many angles, you can’t seem to come to a resolution. Someone will offer the “ah ha” moment this week. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, boredom might reign early in the week, but there are plenty of memorable activities on the horizon. Surround yourself with friends. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, it is OK to reminisce about old times, but trying to relive your youth is not advantageous. This week, make a few new memories that you can be proud of. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, even though others around you don’t always act as you would hope they would, you have to look at the merits behind their actions. Don’t be critical. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20 A problem proves a tough nut to crack, Pisces. You’ll find a way to get to the center of the issue and resolve things by the weekend.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21
Think twice before you enter into a relationship without weighing the cons, Gemini. There are plenty of positives, but some of the other things may be a disadvantage.
CANCER – June 22/July 22
When it seems you have an enormous weight on your shoulders, Cancer, the best thing is to talk about it right away with someone you trust. This will be the case this week.
LEO – July 23/August 23
Look at yourself in the mirror and you’ll find there are plenty of things to be proud of, Leo. Try to regain your selfconfidence in the next few days.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22
Virgo, if you’re looking for a new romantic relationship you could find that you have plenty of suitors this week. It’s almost as if they are all coming out of the woodwork.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23
You had really get a second opinion on the way you are handling your finances, Libra. Credit card usage could put you in a bunch of trouble if you are not careful.
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22
Open up your mind to new possibilities, Scorpio. You could just find that the opportunities for you abound and literally the sky is yours for the taking.
SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21
Think of the ways you can help out at home and put that plan into motion, Sagittarius. Not only will it resolve some issues, but also it will feel good doing something positive.
CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20
If you are feeling stressed, Capricorn, look for ways to lighten your workload. Hire people, like a housekeeper, who can help with some of the things you don’t enjoy doing.
AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18
The to-do list may seem never-ending, Aquarius. All it takes is tackling one thing each day for that list to shrink dramatically. And there are always people who are willing to help.
PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20
There is more than meets the eye to you, Pisces. This week you will prove everyone wrong when you tackle something amazing.
FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY
August 21 - 27 ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Travel is in your immediate future, Aries. You just won’t be sure yet if it will be a long trip or a day just to get away from it all. Regardless, it’ll involve family, too. TAURUS – April 21/May 2 Start putting your money where your mouth is, Taurus. There’s only so long a person can keep stringing along others. Sooner or later your time will be up. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, it’s time to make up your mind about an important decision that’s going to effect others. The next few weeks will be extra busy, so start preparing. CANCER – June 22/July 22 Cancer, you are in a festive mood and you don’t really know how you are going to celebrate. Others are willing to join the party if you let them participate. LEO – July 23/August 23 You haven’t been feeling like yourself lately, Leo. Others have noticed the change in your demeanor and have questioned it. Things will subside shortly. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, avoid making any big changes in the next few days. Your personal life is about to undergo a big change, and you will have a lot of choices to consider. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 It’s alright to take other’s advice once in a while, Libra. You don’t always have to march to the beat of a different drummer. Think about this in the next few days. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, there’s so much going on daily that it’s easy for you to feel scatterbrained and make mistakes. It’s definitely hard to focus when there is confusion. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, a relationship is strained and you are asked to mediate the situation. Don’t get too excited about being a referee, though. It comes with much responsibility. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, you need a break from things but don’t know what the break will be just yet. Start jotting down ideas that will relax your mind and your body. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, things are about to heat up and you may feel overwhelmed in the next few days. Don’t let your temper get the better of you or it could lead to more stress. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20 Pisces, bide your time because change is on the horizon. Events that unfold will not be what you expected.
August 28 - September 3 ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, it can be difficult to accept help, but help is what you need right now. Accept it with open arms and get to the task at hand. Time for buckling down is near. TAURUS – April 21/May 2 Taurus, it’s alright to be cautious with your decisions, but taking much too long could indicate you’re not ready for a change. Soon a spouse or partner will grow weary. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, new beginnings have arrived and you’re excited about these new prospects. Others may share your joy and anticipation but not to the extent that you do. CANCER – June 22/July 22 You’re in over your head, Cancer. Too many projects and not enough helpers can you leave you feeling overwhelmed. You may want to tackle one thing at a time. LEO – July 23/August 23 Leo, there’s not much to be done about a current situation. Complaining about things won’t solve anything, so why waste the breath? Better news is coming. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Start thinking about curbing your spending, Virgo. Your finances are in trouble if you don’t make some changes. More is going out than is coming into your accounts. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, it’s hard to keep friends if you are overly critical of the way they live their lives. Remember, no one is perfect — including you. Keep an open mind at all times. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, it seems as if drama is always following you. That’s because you tend to be the life of the party or prefer all eyes be on you. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, you may feel like you’re the only one keeping the ship from sinking. However, this is not the case. Behind-the-scenes work is taking place, also. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Trust your instincts, Capricorn. Someone who seems like they have your best interests at heart really may have ulterior motives. Heed Capricorn’s sage advice. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, a good night is in store this week. The night brings rewards you did not expect. Working hard yields more than financial success, offering personal satisfaction as well. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar20 Patience is a virtue, Pisces. The best will be in store for you later in the week. There’s not much adventure until then.

FUN BY THE NUMBERS Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test! HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle.

AUGUST BIRTHSTONE PERIDOT: GEM OF MYSTERY (PX) — Looking at the popularity and profusion of peridot today, it’s hard to believe that for almost 2,000 years, the original source of this lovely summer gem was lost in the mists of history. In fact, the island of Zeberget, today called the Isle of St. John, literally was lost in banks of fog off the coast of Egypt until the early 1900s, making the yellowish green peridot from the island so rare as to become almost legendary. Peridot, in the gem family of the mineral olivine, was known to the ancient Egyptians and was used for intaglios, or carvings, as early as the
fourth century B.C. Part of peridot’s mystery through the ages was that it confusingly was called topaz, chrysolite (a name shared by yellow chrysoberyl), olivine (a name also used for Russian green garnet), or zeberdjet, which was the Persian name for citrine. Peridot also was misnamed night emerald, though its range of greens is more yellow than the darker, bluer emerald colors. In ancient times, mariners and pirates believed that peridot would glow in the dark whenever it was near buried treasure or hidden ore veins, particularly of gold or silver. Medieval alchemists used peridot in amulets to protect the wearer from demons. However, by Renaissance times, peridot had become a love stone, worn to attract romance. Eastern mystics recommended peridot to stimulate tissue regeneration.
More common uses for peridot were to attract wealth and prosperity, or to ward off stress. In this century, peridot has become the August birthstone, the 16th anniversary gem and the zodiac stone for Leo. It also has been alleged to encourage a positive emotional outlook on life, to prevent fear or guilt, and to help develop patience. The good news for peridot lovers is that new American sources for peridot in gorgeous clear yellowish-green colors have made peridot both more available and lovelier than ever. The Arizona peridot from the San Carlos reservation is the clearest, greenest and most brilliant peridot ever mined, and there is enough good rough in sizes up to five carats to keep jewelry lovers supplied indefinitely,” says Todd Wolleman of Leo Wolleman Inc. in N.Y. This peridot takes a great polish, and it’s easy to match colors in the smaller stones for bracelets, necklaces and earrings.” Other sources of peridot include Mexico, Norway, Kenya, Burma and Sri Lanka. Gems mined from those sources tend to be darker, with grayish or brownish overtones. Peridot often is found as rolled pebbles or crystals. Peridots larger than five carats are available, but are more costly due to their rarity. Heavily included gems can look translucent, but most peridots are transparent, in light-to-medium yellowish greens. Peridot is relatively soft and best
Jewelry suites, like this matching sterling silver 18K gold peridot necklace and earrings by designer Jane Bohan, are growing in popularity. used in earrings, pins and pendants, where they will not endure rough wear,” says Lynn Ramsey, president of the Jewelry Information Center. “Treat peridot with care to avoid chipping. Long contact with perspiration can attack the gem over time. Keep peridot away from acids, sudden temperature changes and ultrasonic cleaning.” These days, peridot is so beautiful, affordable and available that there’s no mystery at all as to why jewelry lovers have added it to the palette of popular gemstone colors.
Don’t Let High-Tech Thieves “Skim” Your Bank Account (NAPSA)-The next time you use your credit or debit card at an automated teller or payment machine, be careful. High-tech thieves can use phony card scanners and tiny cameras to steal your personal data and your money. “Card-skimming” thieves use hidden devices to “skim” off account numbers and personal identification numbers (PINs) from debit and credit cards. Armed with your information, the fraudsters can swiftly clean out your bank account or make unauthorized purchases. Skimming can occur nearly everywhere you use a card-ATMs, gas station pumps or any machine used to process card purchases. Experts at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency suggest ways to avoid becoming a card-skimming victim: • Do not use a machine if you notice something suspicious. Report the problem immediately.
keypad or screen when entering it. • Beware of strangers who offer help with an ATM that is not functioning properly. • Review your account transactions regularly and check for irregular activities. • Report any irregular activity, suspected losses and loss or theft of your card right away. Prompt reporting makes you less likely to be legally liable for any losses. How Card Skimming Works Skimming can occur nearly everywhere To steal information, thieves you use a card- ATMs, gas pumps or attach a card-skimming device to the any card-processing machine ATM or payment-processing machine. It could be as simple as a • Watch out for signs asking curved plastic shell placed over the you, for example, to swipe your real card slot. When you insert or card before inserting it into the swipe a card, the skimmer reads the magnetic strip or computer chip and ATM. • Inspect objects near ATMs stores or transmits the information. To steal PINs, thieves often use that do not seem to belong there. • Keep your PIN secure at hidden cameras to record your finall times and enter it discreetly gers entering your password. A by holding your hand over the brochure holder, light fixture or
other attachment can conceal a wireless camera, which may be used with a swiping device. Vulnerable Card Readers Card skimming may take place at any ATM or paymentprocessing machine, but machines in public areas, such as airports, conve_nience stores and hotel lobbies, are most vulnerable. Owners tend to inspect these machines less frequently and thieves have more time to execute their schemes. The Federal Trade Commission provides information on what to do if your card is lost or stolen at www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consum er/credit/cre04.shtm. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has answers about what to do about unauthorized charges and other banking issues at www.HelpWithMyBank.gov.
