Cooking Corner Sugar Cookies Still A Guys Can Enjoy Popular Treat Cooking Indoors, Too. The culinary arts sometimes do not necessarily come easily for men.

While guys often look forward to grilling season, cooking indoors lacks the appeal of an open fire and friends and family munching on flame-broiled delights.

Cookies come in many flavors, shapes and sizes. While cookies have evolved over the years, one favorite remains a staple for many: sugar cookies. Enjoyed among adults and children alike, sugar cookies, like the following recipe for "Old-Fashioned Sugar Cookies" from the "Better Homes and Gardens(R) New Cook Book" (Meredith Books), make a delicious midday snack or post-dinner treat.

OLD-FASHIONED SUGAR COOKIES Makes about 48 cookies 1 cup butter, softened 1 1/2 cups sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 to 1/3 cup sugar 1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add the 11/2 cups sugar; beat until combined. Beat in eggs, cream of tartar, baking soda, vanilla, and salt until combined. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in remaining flour. Cover and chill for 2 to 3 hours.

2. Preheat oven to 375 F. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Roll balls in the 1/4 cup sugar to coat. Place balls 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.

3. Bake for 9 to 12 minutes or until light brown.

Perhaps that admiration is due to strawberries, a perfect complement to nearly any dessert. Those who love strawberries and dessert will no doubt fall in love all over again with the following recipe for "Celebration Strawberry Shortcake" courtesy of Eula Mae Dore's "Eula Mae's Cajun Kitchen" (Harvard Common Press).

CELEBRATION STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE Makes 8 to 10 servings 1/2 cup (1 stick) plus 1 tablespoon butter, at room temperature 3 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 181/4 ounce box yellow cake mix 3 large eggs 1 cup water 2 cups cold heavy cream 1 teaspoon clear vanilla flavoring 1/3 cup confectioners' sugar 2 pints fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced 1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Butter three 9-inch cake pans with the 1 tablespoon butter. Sprinkle each evenly with the granulated sugar. Set aside.

2. Combine the cake mix, eggs, water, and remaining 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter in a large mixing bowl. Stir to mix well, then beat, using an electric mixer, for 2 minutes.

3. Pour equal amounts of the cake batter into the prepared cake pans. Bake until golden brown, about 20 minutes.

Remove from the oven and let cool in the pans for about 2 minutes. Turn out of the pans onto a wire rack to cool completely.

4. In a large cold stainless steel or glass bowl, combine the heavy cream, vanilla, and confectioners' sugar and beat, using an electric mixer, at high speed until soft peaks form.

5. Place one of the cake layers on a cake plate, spread about one-third of the whipped cream on top of the cake, and arrange one-third of the strawberries over the cream. Top with the second layer and repeat the process. Top with the final layer and repeat the process.

The cake can be served immediately or chilled

AUGUST BIRTHSTONE PERIDOT: GEM OF MYSTERY (PX) — Looking at the popularity and profusion of peridot today, it’s hard to believe that for almost 2,000 years, the original source of this lovely summer gem was lost in the mists of history. In fact, the island of Zeberget, today called the Isle of St. John, literally was lost in banks of fog off the coast of Egypt until the early 1900s, making the yellowish green peridot from the island so rare as to become almost legendary.

Peridot, in the gem family of the mineral olivine, was known to the ancient Egyptians and was used for intaglios, or carvings, as early as the

fourth century B.C. Part of peridot’s mystery through the ages was that it confusingly was called topaz, chrysolite (a name shared by yellow chrysoberyl), olivine (a name also used for Russian green garnet), or zeberdjet, which was the Persian name for citrine. Peridot also was misnamed night emerald, though its range of greens is more yellow than the darker, bluer emerald colors.

In ancient times, mariners and pirates believed that peridot would glow in the dark whenever it was near buried treasure or hidden ore veins, particularly of gold or silver.

Medieval alchemists used peridot in amulets to protect the wearer from demons. However, by Renaissance times, peridot had become a love stone, worn to attract romance.

Eastern mystics recommended peridot to stimulate tissue regeneration.

More common uses for peridot were to attract wealth and prosperity, or to ward off stress.

In this century, peridot has become the August birthstone, the 16th anniversary gem and the zodiac stone for Leo. It also has been alleged to encourage a positive emotional outlook on life, to prevent fear or guilt, and to help develop patience.

The good news for peridot lovers is that new American sources for peridot in gorgeous clear yellowish-green colors have made peridot both more available and lovelier than ever.

The Arizona peridot from the San Carlos reservation is the clearest, greenest and most brilliant peridot ever mined, and there is enough good rough in sizes up to five carats to keep jewelry lovers supplied indefinitely,” says Todd Wolleman of Leo Wolleman Inc. in N.Y. This peridot takes a great polish, and it’s easy to match colors in the smaller stones for bracelets, necklaces and earrings.”

Other sources of peridot include Mexico, Norway, Kenya, Burma and Sri Lanka. Gems mined from those sources tend to be darker, with grayish or brownish overtones. Peridot often is found as rolled pebbles or crystals.

Peridots larger than five carats are available, but are more costly due to their rarity. Heavily included gems can look translucent, but most peridots are transparent, in light-to-medium yellowish greens.

Don’t Let High-Tech Thieves “Skim” Your Bank Account (NAPSA)-The next time you use your credit or debit card at an automated teller or payment machine, be careful. High-tech thieves can use phony card scanners and tiny cameras to steal your personal data and your money.

“Card-skimming” thieves use hidden devices to “skim” off account numbers and personal identification numbers (PINs) from debit and credit cards. Armed with your information, the fraudsters can swiftly clean out your bank account or make unauthorized purchases. Skimming can occur nearly everywhere you use a card-ATMs, gas station pumps or any machine used to process card purchases.

Experts at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency suggest ways to avoid becoming a card-skimming victim: • Do not use a machine if you notice something suspicious.
