tudents have been left “furious” after being told they would not be getting accommodation - two weeks before the start of term. Many of those affected were first-years, who were told via email they had been unsuccessful in getting university accommodation due to increased demand. Brig ran an exclusive story on the matter, following numerous cries for help on the Official Stirling Freshers Page on Facebook. One student wrote it was the “Worst way possible of starting UofS!!!”, whilst others desperately attempted to find flatmates and last-minute private letting. However, due to legislation, some landlords refuse to let to anyone under the age of 18 as they are considered a minor. The story reached STV and BBC Scotland, with VP Communities Jamie Grant giving an interview for BBC Radio Scotland’s Newsdrive show.
One university accommodation worker told Brig she had several cases where parents phoned to complain their child was 17, and so could not find a place to live. The university cited “significantly increased demand” for university accommodation, with the number of applications for accommodation rising by 609 this year, from 3,070 last year to 3,679 for 2017/18. The university reported it had 2,900 beds available for September 2017. The university accommodation worker told

Brig: “There was one girl whose mother phoned. Her daughter had been given an offer of accommodation and didn’t get the grades for one of her subjects. “They got in touch with the university and said they were appealing it because of problems at home, and Accommodation Services promised to hold onto her place. “The mum phoned today very agitated that the university was now telling her they had no accommodation for her. “I don’t know if it was resolved but I doubt it as
the buildings are full to the brim.” One of the solutions the university has provided is housing some students outside of Stirling, and placing them in accommodation in Glasgow. The university said: “All students have now been made accommodation offers, either in university accommodation or purpose-built student accommodation in the centre of Glasgow. “A number of students have also secured private accommodation in the local area.” Dobbie’s Point, where
some students have been placed, is close to Queen’s Street Station, with the University of Stirling offering students a free 16-25 railcard. However, for all journeys made between 4.30am and 10am Monday to Friday a minimum fare of £12 is payable with a 16-25 railcard. Accommodation prices at Dobbie’s Point range from a ‘Bronze Lower Level’ flat, with a double bed and en-suite shower, at £125 per week for 50 weeks, to a ‘Gold Studio’ at £208 per week. continued on p.5
