A

merican students studying at Stirling have reacted with dismay to Donald Trump’s shock victory in the US presidential election earlier this month.

The Republican candidate won 290 electoral college votes to Democrat rival Hillary Clinton’s 232, despite Clinton having a lead of over 2 million ballots in the popular vote.

But Trump defied the polls to claim key swing states like Florida, Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania, and will take over from Barack Obama to become the 45th President of the United States in January.

“This election is one of the saddest and worst things that could have happened to America,” said Emily Edson, a third-year psychology major and women’s studies minor from New Hampshire.

Emily explained that when she went to her classes the day after the election “most of my fellow classmates who are all Scottish - know I’m American and all of them asked me how I was feeling”.

“I couldn’t answer them without wanting to cry,” she added.

“That whole day I felt like I was living a nightmare.”

Emily went on: “I am fearful for women, immigrants, LGBTQ people, Muslims, non-binary people, and peo-

ple of colour.

“I don’t want to wake up one morning to find out that one of my closest friends can no longer marry her significant other.

“I don’t want to wake up one morning and find out Planned Parenthood is being defunded.

“I don’t want the government having control over women’s bodies or telling people they can’t be who they feel they are or want to be.

“I’m nervous about how other countries will react to this change in the next couple of years. I wonder if we will lose allies and I wonder if another war will be started.

“As a person who has a sister in the military it is sickening to think Donald Trump is her commander-in-chief, when he has never dealt with a military before.”

She added: “If there’s one thing this election really brought out about America it’s that there are a lot of hateful, racist, xenophobic, homophobic and cruel people in this country.”

‘I feel really sick’ Third-year film & media and journalism student Kieran Daly, who used to live in Austin, Texas, and still has family and friends there, said: “I feel really sick about the result because I have no clue what it will bring.

“Because Trump flips on issues so much, I don’t know what to expect from him as a leader.

“I really fear for freedom of speech and what America stands for: the American dream.”

He also pointed out the “divide” that he can see among his friends back in Texas, a sentiment echoed by Chicago-born third-year student Tamara Paulsen.

‘It’s time to do something’

“I come from a Hispanic family on my mom’s side,” she explained.

“I have family teaching in Miami trying to explain to their students what’s going to happen. That side of the family isn’t doing too well.

“On the other hand, my working class family in Chicago who have struggled to make ends meet are welcoming the change, especially because of Trump’s reputation (legitimate or not) of being a great businessman.”

Tamara, who studies sociology and film & media, continued: “I fear for minority groups, especially Muslims and Hispanics. Not because I think Trump’s administration will be able to do much against them - we’ll see - but because he has legitimised this kind of rhetoric.

“I fear that, as with the UK after Brexit, people will be

heckling minorities telling them ‘they voted for them to leave.’

“Case in point: the freaking former grand wizard of the KKK endorsed Trump, and Trump didn’t speak out against him.

“Screw wearing a safety pin to show solidarity - it’s time for the US population to actually do something about this.”

‘I don’t believe in revolting against Trump’

First-year psychology student Kayla Sansevere, who hails from a small town in New Jersey called Forked River, identifies politically as a Libertarian.

“I agree with Democrats on social issues and Republicans on economic and foreign issues,” she explained, adding that she had not supported either Trump or Clinton, nor Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson.

“I don’t believe in revolting against [Trump],” Kayla said.

“I don’t agree with him and I believe he is an absolute pig when it comes to certain issues - ‘locker room talk’, mocking a disabled reporter and so on.

“However, he is the president-elect and I don’t think this is subject to change.”

She added: “Clinton lost not because she is a woman, but because she was seen as un-

‘Almost everyone I know voted for Trump’ First-year marketing student Seth Garrison, who hails from George in the “Deep South”, said he was “absolutely baffled that a man such as Donald Trump could actually be elected to the presidency”.

“He is a terrible politician who just happens to know how to manipulate voters and tell them what they want to hear,” he said.

Seth went on: “Trump won due to an outdated and corrupt electoral process called the electoral college.

“Trump may have won the most electoral votes but he lost the popular vote to Clinton.”

He added: “My main fear for the future is that under the control of Trump, America will take steps backward and cancel out all the progress it has made.”

Seth said that his immediate family were “shocked and upset” at the result, but pointed out: “Since I’m from the ‘good ol’ Republican south’, almost everyone else I know voted for Trump.”

Michelle Stott, a third-year English student from Delaware, in part blamed the media for Trump’s election.

“For months, cable news continued to show Trump speeches and give him air time, not expecting him to get the Republican nomination,” she said.

Michelle added: “The politics of this election have created deep divides between people and I don’t think Trump is the kind of person that will be able to bring people together after saying such terrible things during his campaign.”

‘I want to go back home and help foster love’ Creative writing and psychology student Gretchen Hintze, who lives in New York State but studies in Pennsylvania, said it was “devastating as a young woman to watch Hillary Clinton, one of the most qualified candidates in history, lose to someone as deplorable and horrific as Trump”.

She added: “I have people jokingly asking me if they can come and stay here in Scotland with me and my new friends and while I want to provide what refuge I can, I also don’t want to let America descend into a permanence of hatred.

“I want to go back home and help foster love and understanding - and yes, it will be difficult, but it is worth fighting for.”

A warm welcome to all students and staff and I hope you enjoy the latest edition of Brig Newspaper.

What an insane month it has been. And I don’t mean the fun, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, taking peyote in the desert kind of insane.

That can be a good laugh.

But there’s been fear and loathing aplenty, as walkingtangerine-in-a-wig Donald Trump claimed a shock victory in the US presidential election. I think I speak for all of Brig when I say: ‘AAAARRRRGGGGHHH.’ Trump understandably looms large in this issue, with reaction from Stirling’s US student contingent, forensic analysis from our politics team and a lament at how terrible 2016 has been from our brand new features editor Danielle Martin.

But it’s not all Trump, you’ll be glad to hear.

Union President Dave Keenan is encouraging students to respond to a new survey on the ever-hot topic of student rent, with a view to strengthening his position in upcoming meetings with

the Rent Review Group.

LGBT+ and GEM have this week been solemnly remembering victims of anti-transgender violence and prejudice.

Meanwhile, public transport remains an issue on campus, with a fantastic spread on the subject in this month’s comment section.

Finally, our sports teams have been getting some brilliant results in BUCS fixtures - as anyone who has been following Brig Sport’s latest initiative, Brig Bleeds Green, will know.

tirling University has confirmed that they will not raise tuition fees in the next academic year for students from the rest of the United Kingdom.

A spokesperson for the university told Brig: “Tuition fees for undergraduate degree programmes for students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland for the 2017-18 academic year will remain at the current level.

“Tuition fees are reviewed on an annual basis in line with sector averages, government policy and other financial factors.”

This announcement comes following the news that the University of Glasgow, University of Edinburgh and the University of St Andrews will be raising their tuition fees for students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Students from the rest of the UK pay £6750 per year, for a maximum of 4 years, for undergraduate courses at Stirling University.

Overseas students (students from outside of the

EU) will see a slight tuition fee raise from £ 11,555 to £ 11,845.

Bissett, who graduated from Stirling with a firstclass honours in English, will receive the degree during the winter graduation ceremony.

He will receive the award of Doctor of the University, recognising his contributions to Scottish literary culture.

December deadline for study abroad

econd years are being reminded to submit their applications for study abroad before the December 2 deadline.

Jo Haggerty, Stirling’s International Exchanges Manager, said: “If you can study abroad, you should!

“Do remember that there are limited places available so it is important to have at least three choices of univer-

sity where you’d be happy to spend a semester.”

To be eligible to qualify, you must have achieved 50% or higher in each module of your degree subjects in semesters two and three.

Grades for semester one are not counted.

ransport to and from Stirling University is under fresh scrutiny as the Stirling Students’ Union opens a consultation on available services.

The Union said it recognised there were issues surrounding the availability of buses and car parking spaces, and said it would be open to comments from students on their experience of car parking at university.

The report released by the Union said: “We discussed a number of issues with First, including the issue of the availability of buses coming to the campus first thing in the morning.

“Our concern is that people on occasion have been missing their classes due to an apparent lack of buses. Based on the representations we made, First have agreed to a number of measures to assist with this including adding an additional morning service.”

Some students have report-

ed waiting for a bus for up to 30 minutes. Fourth year politics and history student Elen Kulagowski tweeted her frustration to First after reportedly experiencing poor service from the company.

She told Brig: “I think the UL service works well when it is being monitored, but other than that either no bus turns up or three turn up at the same time after waiting 40 minutes.

“I now leave an hour and a quarter before class because the service is unreliable and the bus drivers are very often rude about the amount of students getting on the bus.”

First wanted to remind students their student cards will get them a student rate on all First buses, not just UniLinks, so they do not have to wait for a UL. The Union added: “We also discussed some medium to long-term measures to help including the option of a bus shelter in Queen’s Court and more access to real-time information on services.”

Car parking has been a

long-term issue at the university, with students and staff frequently complaining about the number of spaces available.

Kirsty Grossart, a fourth year journalism student, said there were “definitely not enough spaces.”

She added: “The number of times I’ve been late because of parking is ridiculous and I only got my car this semester.

Even if you try and park up at the accommodation it can take ages to find somewhere, and then you still have to walk back down to class.

“I think they need to employ multi-storey parking or underground parking if they don’t want to ruin the campus.”

The price of a full-year parking permit rose at the start of this semester, from £150 to £200.

The Union and university admitted “the current scenario is not working”, and it would be seeking opinions from students.

Union President launches student rent survey

A

ccommodation costs are being scrutinised by students as part of a new online survey.

The purpose of this survey – brought forward by the Union - is to find out students views on the current expense of accommodation on campus.

Union President Dave Keenan said: “Rent is one of the biggest issues which face

our students and I was elected on a mandate to fight for rent reductions.

“I encourage as many of you as possible to fill out this survey to help me make the arguments that I was elected to make.”

The survey will close on December 5 and can be found on the Stirling Students’ Union website.

Stirling clinches talks for ‘Citty Deal’ in Autumn statement

he UK Government has confirmed negotiations for a £500m ‘City Deal’ for Stirling in the Autumn statement.

Chancellor Philip Hammond revealed the government would be opening talks to come to an agreement on the financial package, which is designed to fund infrastructure projects and promote economic growth.

It comes after similar deals for Glasgow and Aberdeen, with Edinburgh also in talks for similar investment.

Stirling Council leader Johanna Boyd said: “Today’s decision will be transformational for Stirling and its surrounding areas but, just as importantly, it endorses the ambition that Stirling Council and its many partners have for the area.”

he Students’ Union have welcomed the brand new Stirling University Fitness Society, who want students to further embrace their physical health.

Although the University of Stirling is known for its sports and athletics, this is the first single society to be dedicated to any and all types of physical exercise until now.

President and founder of the Fitness Society, Markus “Mario” van der Westhuizen, a sports science student, took it upon himself to raise awareness in regards to fitness on campus.

“I decided that I wanted to make a club that doesn’t expect the commitment, that’s more casual and actually cheaper than the sports union societies so people can join and be part of the community,” he said.

Markus’ personal experience with fitness and all it entails encouraged him to create the Fitness Society with the hope of forming a community where people from different backgrounds can

join and share their journey towards fitness.

He explained: “The Fitness Society is fundamentally just a community to support people in their own journeys and through doing so promote fitness on campus.”

Although fairly new, the Fitness Society has already had a successful collaboration with the Stirling University Mental Wellbeing Society with the aim of combining physical and mental health in order to reach the highest possible positive goal.

As physical fitness can be a lonely activitiy, the collaboration between the two societies was designed to strengthen a sense of community and reduce feelings of isolation causing mental stress related to fitness.

Other potential collaborations are currently being planned. “The beauty of the Fitness Society is that any club that wants its members to be healthy can come to us and we can arrange an event to educate them or arrange a group workout with them to get people active,” Markus said.

rently planning a Healthy Bake Sale to encourage healthier eating. Donations collected are to be given to a charity, United Through Sport, who provide exercise equipment to underprivileged people around the world.

Talks regarding nutrition and myths about fitness have taken place. This has encouraged members to discuss their own opinions as well as share their knowledge on these topics.

He said: “The Fitness Society is the thing that people

need.

“If you’ve ever needed a push to set you off in the right direction, to be around positive people to help you, if you want to be healthier, if you’re wanting to achieve a goal, get a move on in your journey then come to Fitness Society.

“That is our main aim, to help you in your journey and get you healthier and where you want to be.”

Stirling Uni researchers carry out personality tests on fish

quaculture experts from the University of Stirling have found that fish deal with stress in different ways, depending on their personality.

Working with the Institute for Food and Agricultural Research and Technology (IRTA) in Catalonia, they found that the way Senegalese sole cope with stress is differs from fish to fish and remains consistent regardless of the situation they are in.

Scientists found when faced with confinement, restraint or a new environment fish with similar personalities had a similar response.

This suggests that a fish that are reactive and fearful or proactive and curious

Dr Sonia Rey Planellas, Research Fellow in the Institute of Aquaculture, said: “Senegalese sole is a very valuable fish farmed across Europe, however first generation males’ failure to reproduce is still a problem affecting production of the species.

“Animals who are proactive and try to explore are likely to reproduce in captivity so it’s important these fish can be identified at a young age.”

These tests are simple to perform and require no specialised equipment.

Researchers hope that it will allow both small and large fish famers to have an easier time breeding the fish.

GEM and LGBT+ societies hold vigils to remember victims of anti-transgender violence and prejudice

n the night of Monday November 21, Stirling University’s Gender Equality Movement (GEM) held a candlelit vigil in memory of transgender lives lost to suicide and hate crime.

November 20 marked International Transgender Day of Remembrance with vigils and ceremonies taking place all over the globe, with the intention of commemorating the loss of live to hate.

Speaking to organiser of Stirling event Boo Malsen about the event, they spoke about the intention of the event and GEM’s stance on transphobic hate crime.

They said that GEM “sees trans identity as a gender identity in itself and as the equality movement they strive for seeing no gender identity facing any kind of violent or discrimination.”

They went on to say that trans people “are one of the most at risk gender identities and experience one of the highest rates of violence towards a group”.

Stirling Labour condemns SNP ‘health mismanagement’ David Mckay News Editor

he local Labour party has taken to the streets in Bannockburn to protest against what they call Scottish Government mishandling of the NHS. They slammed the Scottish Government’s handling of the NHS workforce over the last decade.

Stirling Labour says that there is a looming recruitment crisis among doctors and nurses across Scotland.

They have urged the government to act to ensure that this crisis is averted.

A Royal College of Nursing survey discovered that nine in ten nurses believed their workload was becoming too burdensome.

Labour say vital nursing and midwifery posts in Forth Valley Health Board are going unfilled as the NHS struggles to cope with financial challenges and the increasing demands of an ageing population.

Currently there are 87.8 vacancies for nurses in Forth Valley Health Board compared with only 18 just

5 years ago. This is the largest rise in nursing vacancies in any Health Board in Scotland.

Between 2009 and 2012, when Nicola Sturgeon had the health portfolio, training places for nurses and midwives were cut by a fifth and 2000 nursing jobs were cut, according to the survey.

Stirling Labour Party Chair Cllr Violet Weir said: “As a former nurse myself I believe the SNP needs to listen to what our nurses are saying – only a third of NHS staff believe that there are enough of them to do their jobs properly and nine out of ten nurses think their workload is getting worse.”

“Our staff and residents deserve better than this.”

Speaking in August, Scottish health secretary Shona Robison said: “At the request of the Scottish government, health boards have very carefully assessed their workforce needs for the coming year and identified the number of additional staff required to help deliver services.”

Safe consumption centre for heroin addicts approved in Glasgow Craig Paton News Editor

P

lans to open a centre where addicts can take heroin under supervision have been approved by Glasgow City Council.

A safer consumption facility is to be set up on a trial basis in the city centre.

The sites are intended to make taking heroin safer for the addicts who inject in public.

This comes in response to an HIV outbreak in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS board area, as well as statistics published in August that show 99 people dying due to heroin in 2015.

The plans, put forward by Susanne Millar, Chief Officer for Planning, Strategy and Commissioning for the Glasgow Health and Social Care Partnership, also includes a separate method of treatment where users will be provided with pharmaceutical grade heroin.

However, heroin assisted treatment will only be made available to a small amount of people, and will require a full clinical consultation and an appointment.

where users can take heroin that they have bought on the street in a safer environment, with access to medical care in case of overdose.

Out with the supervised use, and the heroin assisted treatment, there are also plans to have a “wrap around” service, with addictions counselling, primary healthcare and housing and welfare advice.

Now that the project has

been given the green light, a full business case will be devised which will outline the costs, the possible site and how the effectiveness of the service will be measured, among other things. It will then be up to councillors to see if the case for the centre is a viable, long term one.

The plans rely heavily on an exemption from the Lord Advocate to the Misuse of Drugs Act, which would allow for

heroin to be consumed on the premises.

Susanne Millar spoke of the benefits of this type of scheme.

She said “Our ultimate goal is always for drug users to recover from their addiction and remain drug free.”

“However, until someone is ready to seek and receive help to stop using drugs it is important to keep them as safe as possible while they continue to use drugs. The proposals

for a safer injecting facility and heroin-assisted treatment are therefore intended to saves lives and protect the health of vulnerable people.”

Speaking specifically of the heroin assisted treatment, Millar said “research trials from elsewhere show that they substantially reduce people’s need for street drugs, reduces crime and leads to more engagement with healthcare and addictions services. This is a plus on a number of levels.”

An estimated 500 people inject drugs in public in Glasgow City centre, which can cause social and health issues for the general public.

Millar says that “public injecting creates a sense of fear and alarm among those witness this happening. People will become understandably concerned about the risk of injury from discarded needles, particularly in relation to young children.” The report states that this proposal will help to curb that issue.

One of the main detractors of this plan is Professor Neil Mckeganey, of the Substance Use Research centre in Glasgow. Mckeganey, speaking to the Guardian, likened the plans to methadone, stating that the same promises were made, and that there is no

clear evidence that it will cut drug abuse or deaths.

In response, Millar said “Mr McKeganey is entitled to his views, but they are not views that we agree with.” She went on to say that the plans “are intended to saves lives and protect the health of vulnerable people … We want to see people affected by addiction move beyond their current situation and towards a positive outcome.”

McKeganey also appeared to question the likelihood of the staff at the centre to refer users to projects that would help them stop taking drugs.

Millar again responded to McKeganey’s doubts by saying “It is fully envisaged that the safer consumption facility and heroin-assisted programme will act as gateway to other support for individuals. If the centre is given the full go-ahead, there will be wrap around services put in place which will see users referred to or able to access a wide range of health and social care support.”

The full business case will be assessed at a meeting in February by the Glasgow Joint Integration Board.

he result of the historic European referendum was met with astonishment and disbelief across the world when the majority of the UK chose to leave, but hidden between the animosity and discussions of closing borders and creating new trade deals, there is an entire student body who do not know where they stand.

The uncertainty of what awaits has been a mainstay of the past few months in all areas after the vote and this had lead to a feeling of unease among European students.

It is impossible to predict what is in store for EU students studying at universities in the UK, however if the British government get their way, it looks increasingly likely that higher tuition fees could be on their way and depending on visas, students will be unable to remain

here after their degrees are completed.

Margareta Rončević, a 20-year-old politics student from Croatia, began her studies at Stirling in September this year. She said that the disapponting outcome had impacted her and although she loves studying here, staying postBrexit doesn’t seem too appealing.

She said: “I wanted to study here and this is a great place for study but afterwards, I’m not sure.

“After the Brexit result of the referendum I’m just not quite keen on staying. I love Scotland and the people are great here and towards everyone from the EU. They’re really welcoming.

But then again, if you remain in the UK, still it’s going to be different, I don’t want to live somewhere I’m not welcome.”

The encouraging message from the university will make students like Margareta relieved but with uncertainty surrounding what Brexit means, there is anticipation over what follows. at 6:30pm in room C4W2 if discussions about the fourth industrial revolution, the internet of things, cyber physical systems and smart factories are your thing.

Why Le Pen? Why racism?

Why isolationism? Similarly to many other questions the answer is a deadly cocktail: populism and globalisation.

Donald J Trump, the reality star, the serial divorcee, the yellow hair and orange skin may seem different than all the other questionable political successes of the past few years in Europe and North America.

Our world is closer than ever. Through incredible means of transportation, the internet, global alliance, and peace, at least in the ‘west’, few men in few companies in few countries have seen incredible success and unbelievable sums of money gather in front of them.

At the same time, from Margaret Thatcher’s domestic policy in the 1980s, to Bill Clinton’s NAFTA in the 1990s, to Barack Obama’s incomplete TPP, the lower ranks of workers in some of the biggest economies in the world see globalisation as the

cause of their closed places of work. Chinese, Mexican, Vietnamese, and whatever else, products fill their stores and their homes and they are frustrated.

Economies develop and balances internationally change. The US, along with most of those big economies, have overall benefited from this, but similarly to Bernie Sander’s supporters, the white middle-aged men with the red trucker hats are eager to see those benefits for themselves instead of the few of the few getting more and more.

Hey Trump voter! Logical, isn’t it? While there are many arguments to be made for immigration, international trade, globalisation, and all other values of the post-Cold-War world, it is easy to go against them.

It is even easier to support someone who goes against them and, even for a second, gives you the hope that the old local economy you feel comfortable in is coming back. And so you voted Trump. And he won.

What to do students studying in the US, Australia, and Hong Kong think? Brig’s Kirsten robertson tried to find out!

Alasdhair McBride Flinders University, Australia onald Trump’s victory was as unexpected here in Australia as it was elsewhere. The main concerns centred on the Trump presidency’s implications for the Trans-Pacific Partnership and Australia’s defence policy. On the university campus, the mood was dire, as Hillary had been the clear favourite to win amongst students.

Matt Cipolla, a film student from Chicago, said “As someone that supported Bernie Sanders, it’s clear that the establishment has been horribly detached from what the American people wanted.

I’m disgusted in Trump’s victory and I hope to God that the DNC crashes and burns, as a result, forcing them to see that people do not want more of the same. Hopefully, the silver lining will be a change for establishmentruled politics and the death of the two-party system between now and 2020.”

Kirsten Robertson University of Alaska Anchorage In Alaska, a traditionally red state, there was little im-

mediate Democrat presence in the week leading up to the election. Trump signs were scattered along the highway, and a few battered Bernie stickers still remain on cars.

But there was little visible support for Hillary Clinton.

The last time Alaska voted Democrat was 1964 - and this year it was no different.

Yet Alaska’s top two Republican senators recently withdrew support for their party nominee.

They were recently forced to resign from the Alaska Republican Party’s Central Committee.

The phrase “Brexit effect” seems to have been coined in the coverage, indicative of the shock factor of Trump’s win and the confidence Clinton supporters had in a clear victory.

The majority of voters here seem disillusioned. America is tired of the two-party system, but sadly instead of changing this, in many cases it is leading to voter apathy and low turnout where it matters.

The future under Trump is unclear, but for now the people of Alaska are content to begrudgingly move on with their lives, and accept Trump’s win despite its controversies. But for the few

who do stand up, who speak out against the result - it is in them that I see the hope for America’s future.

The US election here is a bit of a laughing stock. Trump is seen as a real life meme and no one thinks he can win.

Hong Kong is caught up in its own political turmoil right now, which I think is why the US election hasn't been getting a massive amount of interest.

There is a big push for independence, or at least more autonomy for Hong Kong, and a lot of the pro-Hong Kong parties have arguments rooted strongly in democratic values.

If Trump wins, it will be widely considered amongst Hongkongers as an example of democracy failing, so that could negatively impact the case for independence.

I get the impression from a lot of people in HK that the US is viewed as quite an unsafe country, and is idealised a lot less than in the UK. Students and lecturers have been talking about Brexit and even Scottish independence a lot more than they have been talking about the US elections!

For the past three months, I have studied at Salisbury University, Maryland, which is a rural area with a largely conservation population.

However, overall the state voted Democrat. Many students at Salisbury also come from the state of Delaware, which also voted for Hillary Clinton. My experience of studying at Salisbury has re-

vealed that many of the students here are neoliberals in favour of Clinton; nevertheless, there is still strong support for Trump amongst local people, and a number of students.

I interviewed eight students for SUTV Evening News, the student run TV station on campus. Of those eight we spoke to, three had voted in the 2016 Presidential Election, while the other five did not participate in voting.

When asked why they had not voted, a couple of interviewees told us they could not decide who to vote for, while others had not applied for an absentee ballot in time, and did not have the opportunity to travel home to vote.

There was a feeling among these potential voters of apathy about the election, although one student we spoke to had told us that had he voted, it would have been for Hillary Clinton.

n one of the biggest shocks of recent times, Hillary Clinton - a democratic cornerstone - fell to the Republican misfit Donald Trump in arguably one of the most controversial political campaigns in history.

While Clinton is clearly the lesser of two evils, it was her own failings which cost her the election.

Against a political newbie like Trump, you’d expect someone with her political reputation to have the US election in the bag.

Her own camp clearly believed there wouldn’t be much of a contest, and this itself is an issue.

Typically Democratic states like Wisconsin turned their backs to her due to the assumption that they were safe and so Clinton completely ignored Wisconsin - not visiting once.

Her attitude of appearing to accept victories in states long before the votes were cast suggests arrogance on Clinton’s part. Many Americans are clearly fed up of the status quo in politics. They

had eight years of Obama’s neoliberal policies and Clinton was merely offering the same.

What they failed to understand is that a lot of people are angry towards the system. Trump offered something different many could connect with. Further, had she been elected four of the five last presidents would have had the same two surnames. possibly tiring voters.

A lot of her campaign was based around making history by becoming the first female president.

Yet she actually failed to connect with women as well as she could have.

When the results began and reality set in, the sheer shock of Clinton supporters was evident, showing the assumptive nature of the campaign that led to their demise.

If one thing is now apparent, it is the disillusion of the average American towards the Democrats.

What remains to be seen is if the party will get this wake-up call and come back rejuvenated for 2020, taking back what they lost.

Report: Edinburgh University’s Election Night

or the last few months it was hard not to be bombarded by US election pools, or memes but as of Tuesday 8th November they can all be replaced by Obama good-bye messages, so the question is: what happened?

Last week the Politics Society was invited by Edinburgh University to celebrate or mourn the results of the US election with like-minded people and the CNN live broadcast at their Students Association.

In other words, it was an all nighter with no chance of getting sleep.

Every time a candidate was projected to win a state, or officially declared a winner

the event roared.

Florida was the most anxious result to wait for - as a swing state there is no way of forecasting their vote by looking at history.

But at one point the vote for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump was tied 48.5% to 48.5% for about half an hour.

By this time Trump had a winning streak of states coloured red, including Georgia and Virginia, and Clinton had only won Vermont.

Within the hour over 5 states were coloured blue and almost everyone in the venue started jumping and screaming.

However, the general atmosphere of the event drastically turned when Trump was formally projected as winning Florida, and within

Half of the US is happy that she, the former First Lady, Senator, and Secretary of State with a private e-mail server, lost.

The other half is devastated that he, the family-loan-receiving, racist, misogynistic, pussy-grabbing, impatient, child version of a businessman, won. Outside of the 50

states it is even easier to see who the favourable candidate was. But it’s finished.

You can protest, you can cry, you can do whatever you want, but you probably did not vote so now you can only wait till 2020.

One problem of this whole campaign, though, was the personality narrative I myself just employed in this previous paragraph.

If for one second we take

the next hour Ohio being deemed ‘too close to call’ for what seemed the whole night.

Towards the 4am mark Trump was announced as achieving Ohio which was a monumental moment in the night.

Similarly to Florida, Ohio is a swing state and for the past few elections has seemed to predict the overall presidential winner.

Despite your views on the candidates, it was definitely a night which would make the history books, and a night I will remember as celebrating in the capital all night.

We have a classic Republican agenda with an unconventional face. The main question is whether that agenda is going to win over the face.

As the first few moments of setting up the Trump administration clearly prove, this is going to be a real battle.

The establishment of the Republican Party is ecstatic they have full power in Capitol Hill and the White House.

Yet do they?

The two main figures that are most likely to be the heart and soul of Trump House are realising that debate more clearly than anything else.

An establishment Republican, Reince Priebus, has been named Chief of Staff, and an extremist, online personality realising all that was wrong with the Trump campaign, Stephen Bannon, is Chief Strategist.

The two voices are most likely to be heard over each other for the next four years.

In each issue, the one that

prevails is going to make Donald Trump either more Republican puppet, or uncontrollable child.

Thinking about this, I am inclined to hope for Mr Priebus to be heard always.

But then I remembered what happened the last time the man in the White House was controlled by his Republican establishment advisors.

Iraq happened.

In fact, this fight may pretty much define whether we will have another G W Bush in Washington, or a Shonda Rhimes series for President,

that is one that no one can ever predict.

While protesting right now cannot in fact do much, the Republican Party, the Democratic, US voters, global leaders and the entire world needs to keep an eye out for the blonde wig’s next move.

And that’s because only one thing is certain right now: we are going to miss Barack Obama.

For the rest, we will have to wait and see. After all, President-elect himself promised to keep up in suspense in the last debate. And he sure will.

rips home are supposed to be relaxing – a welcome break from the stresses and strains of university life.

But what was meant to be a quick overnight stay has turned into Mission Impossible - Stirling.

Instead of having a chilled journey back to university, I’m sitting fuming on yet another replacement bus taking me far away from where I really want to be.

Let’s be clear - taking public transport stresses me out a lot.

It’s late, it’s crowded, and

it’s expensive.

It never seems as efficient as it should be.

But as a student who doesn’t drive, public transport is a necessary evil that must be faced if I want to make it from A to B. That being said, these latest rail issues really grind my gears.

After a long hot summer of lengthy train journeys due to engineering works at Glasgow’s Queen Street station, Scotrail has introduced a fresh wave of disruption.

This means the rail service will be plagued by yet more lateness and cancellations, not forgetting the dreaded replacement buses.

And all in the run-up to Christmas – not great timing!

If you’re a busy student like me, the ability to travel across Scotland at a moment’s notice is essential.

It should be a right, not a privilege.

Myself and many others do not have time to plan journeys that take several more hours than they ought to.

And I shouldn’t have to – the service should be reliable enough on its own.

I’m not the only one frustrated at these seemingly endless problems.

Just last month Scotrail were fined £483,000 for failing to meet required stand-

ards for trains and stations.

It’s almost funny that they’ll pay off that fine using the overpriced fares we all pay for the privilege of travelling on their mediocre service.

It may seem like I’m being overly harsh, but let’s look at the bigger picture.

Every year rail prices go up, and travellers like you and me pay more. Yet the service never gets any better.

This is pretty hard to justify when the common commuter is forking out just to get to work and back.

It’s not fair, and It must change.

Speaking of change, our nation’s rail service is not the only one who have been slyly

raising the prices.

I was shocked to return this semester and discover that the student prices on Stirling’s buses have increased.

But why? They are still late, and staffed by the unfriendliest drivers known to man.

A reason I live on campus is so I can avoid the hassle of taking a bus to and from the university every day.

But a huge proportion of Stirling’s students do live in town, and therefore rely on buses to make it to class in time.

If a bus simply does not show up, then that’s not good enough.

Students everywhere depend on public transport –

to commute to university, to see friends and family, and to make the most of their newfound freedom.

When it becomes too expensive or disrupted to use, then it will impact on our lives the most.

I feel that I am trapped – like most students, I cannot afford to run a car, yet I can no longer rely on public transport to take me to where I need to be, when I need to be there.

All I want is to be able to travel in reasonable comfort, in reasonable time, and all for a reasonable price.

Unfortunately, this appears to be too much to ask.

Yet, they might be right in doing so. Work now takes up a vast amount of time as an adult: The old nine to five job is now so outdated it might as well be reverted to 5pm to 9am, as people take horrendously long night shifts just to sustain themselves for the next shift.

And that is what work has become for some people: Simply allowing them to survive until the next shift.

There is no time to pursue hobbies, spend quality time with family, or destress.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, 2015/16 saw 37% of all work-related ill health cases caused by stress, and 45% of all working days lost in the UK.

And it is not suffered only by young people. For men, age 45-54 saw the highest prevalence of work-related stress, and 35-44 for women.

Lecturer BJ Epstein from the University of East Anglia wrote an interesting article on the value of a shorter working day in Sweden.

The shorter day, she writes, makes employees feel happier, more productive, more creative, and so both the organisation and the individual benefits.

She writes: “Burned-out people cost companies and society time and money.

They need healthcare, time off work, replacements have to be recruited and trained.

Rested, enthusiastic staff members feel positive about their workplaces and can be passionate about their jobs.”

The constant squeeze is a natural result of neo-liberal capitalist society, and think tank New Economics Foundation sees a 21-hour working week as an effective counter strategy.

Restricting working hours gets workers off the “consumer treadmill”, and gets citizens thinking of what a good life looks like, which would also save the environment.

It argues reigning-in this consumer culture would reduce social inequality, reduce stress, increase control over our own lives, “a better deal for parents”, and time to be active citizens.

Whatever the solution to the problem, it is evident a problem exists in our workaholic culture.

Working hard is a good value to hold, but also one which needs restricting before it consumes us, and exacerbates the problem of greedy capitalism and workrelated stress.

If you want to promote “British values” of hard work, Theresa May, don’t bleed dry those citizens striving for a better life.

We all heard that question when we were dreaming of being a pirate, a dentist, a teacher for the first troop of Martians to land on Earth, a superhero who could make people’s farts the colour of their personality.

As some of us approach the end of university (commence internal screaming), that question “What do I want to be when I leave university?” comes back to us.

But what does it mean to be something? I do not mean this in a philosophical sense, but in recent history our occupation has become part of our identity.

From “What do you want to be?” we are asked “What are you?”, or “What do you do?” in awkward introductory conversations as adults.

he bus has been my main form of public transport since setting foot in Scotland.

The Edinburgh Airport Link was clean, comfortable and well-lit! Pulling out all the stops to make a tourist happy.

The magic wore off a little bit with a glance at the price of a single journey £4.50, but such is the cost of airport connections these days.

Things turned confusing when my best friend and hostess checked the train schedule from Edinburgh Haymarket to Alloa, only to confirm that – due to works

– there would be a replacement coach.

It was comfortable, and it wasn’t too much fuss.

Until the final stop turned out to be Polmont and no trains seemed to be departing from there either.

If you’re wondering why two young ladies with English accents didn’t feel comfortable there after dark, you should research Her Majesty’s Young Offenders Institution, Polmont.

Admittedly, the risks of an escapee attacking us that night were low, but there was little to reassure us then.

So we booked a taxi, which made for a comfortable ride, but cost us extra money.

The Stirling bus system is

a mix of negatives and positives, which seem to balance each other out.

Passengers not equipped with a student ID have to pay over double the fare of a student discount.

It makes sense; those who with less resources shouldn’t be deprived of the simplest means to get around.

On the off chance that a good portion of the cost goes towards the driver’s payslip, it all sounds reasonable.

What doesn’t make sense is that if the route extends beyond Stirling council, students have to pay extortionate fares to travel.

Part of the price is justified in the free Wi-Fi you wouldn’t dream of anywhere

snow and sparkles.

The adverts themselves are big-budget productions, costing millions of pounds and featuring well-loved actors and singers.

Quickly after their release they are dissected on social media.

Is it as good as last year’s advert?

What does it mean?

What is it supposed to make me feel?

Peace? Love? Joy? Probably.

But its main purpose is to make the viewer feel like buying.

After all, if these adverts didn’t increase their profits, then big companies just wouldn’t bother.

So how do these cutesy adverts convince you to consume like Santa on Christmas Eve? By presenting the latest products early in November, it’s a reminder that Christmas is coming, and the pressure is on to buy, buy, buy.

Hurriedly getting a gift on

Christmas Eve just isn’t going to cut it – the only way to put the appropriate amount of love and thought into each present is by planning in advance.

Buy now! The purchase may be regretted, but by then the receipt will probably have been lost in a pile of Christmas cards and wrapping paper.

Christmas adverts almost always contain children, the elderly, or animals for the ultimate ‘aww’ factor.

By charming everyone with a bear and a hare, or an old man on the moon, they are associating Christmas gifts with ideas like friendship and love.

It’s true that this is what Christmas is all about, but by pushing these feelings alongside the latest games console, it does leave a bit of a bad taste in the mouth.

Behind every Christmas advert is a message about the true meaning of Christmas struggling to get out.

Family, friendship, love and

We’ve heard of rent prices going nowhere but up, of more parking passes being sold than there are places available.

We are aware that there are issues with university services, but the cost of transport outside the university are inconsiderate of the needs of foreign students, especially when half the system isn’t running the way it should be.

This, of course, refers to the construction works currently holding up train services to

Edinburgh and Glasgow at the weekend.

Understandable motives to disrupt transport for all, but preferably not to be done during peak season.

Those who think people should learn to take a look around and connect the dots should keep in mind that bus signs in Scotland don’t display location names in a legible fashion, which makes it difficult to decipher where

The returns are affordable with student ID but my favourite thing is the night routes (19.00 onwards) running all the way to Alexander Court. Safety guaranteed.

Except it’s all a lie, isn’t it?

This is what companies and businesses want people to think.

In reality everyone spends the weeks before Christmas in a festive haze, drunk on Christmas spirit, hastily buying what the adverts say is the latest craze this year – even if it is a bit above budget.

h no, I hear you cry.

This is going to be another article about Donald Trump, isn’t it?

Well, yes it is, I reply, but only a little bit – I promise.

Bear with me.

You see, when I woke up on that fateful Wednesday morning to the news that Trump was the president of the world’s most important country, I was utterly gobsmacked.

It exactly was the same with Brexit, and the General Election in 2015.

Nobody I knew supported these people, so who exactly was voting for them?

And therein lies our problem.

In each of these cases a lot of people were shocked by the outcome of these political events because they believed that they were a part of the majority.

Except by definition they were not. it

They were unwittingly misled by the very thing they use to educate themselves on political happenings.

And that is social media.

We like to use social media because it gives us easily digestible information in bitesize chunks.

We then use this to inform and influence our own opinions.

This method of receiving political knowledge makes us believe that we are being exposed to a wide range of ideas and beliefs.

However, this is not the

Each of our social media platforms is actually a carefully constructed echo chamber.

We grow and cultivate our Facebook and our Twitter, weeding out those we don’t agree with until we have our own perfect utopian bubble.

And we don’t even realise we’re doing it.

The wide range of people we follow means that we are fooling ourselves by thinking we have balanced social media spheres.

But no matter the different people, cultures and ages on our timeline, we are still only

seeing a tiny window on our world.

We’ve all been guilty of quietly unfriending those whose political beliefs don’t quite tally up with our own – especially if they are keen on expressing them.

I know I have done this in the past.

After all, nobody likes to be bombarded with thoughts that make us angry, sad or scared – we already get enough of that through the mainstream media.

Unfortunately, by cutting these beliefs out of our media consumption we are limiting our exposure to new and progressive ideas.

After all, what is even the point in opinions if we do not allow ourselves to learn and change our minds every so often?

Having the full spectrum of political ideas on your newsfeed will help you to broaden your horizons – even if it does occasionally make you squirm.

We can’t spend out whole lives in our own political bubbles.

It’s time to be brave and burst them.

That way we will find

out more about ourselves and the ideas of our fellow people – and not be so surprised next time an election comes around.

You may not decide that The Donald is actually a saint (ew), but it’s important to be open to new ideas – even if it just helps you understand people that little bit more.

FROM PARAMORE FOUNDER TO SOLO FRONTMAN AN INTERVIEW WITH FARRO

I

t’s been six years since Josh Farro left world-famous band Paramore and soon after jumped straight into his solo career. Brig Music chats with FARRO about life after Paramore, his debut album ‘Walkways’ and the importance of taking risks.

It’s been a while since you independently launched as FARRO, how has it been going solo?

It´s been going really well. It feels great to play in shows again, it´s one of the best parts of it all. So I´m really enjoying it.

What have you done these six years, from leaving Paramore to going solo?

I have filled in and played with some other bands but it was never something permanent.

‘Cliffs’ is your most played song on Spotify, what personal meaning does this song have for you?

I wrote that song about taking a jump, that leap in life when you´re kind of scared to make that decision.

In my case, I was quite hesitant to be a lead singer of a band. I wasn´t really sure if it would work, if I would like it or if I would be any good. So I wrote that song to encourage myself to take the risk because at some point we all have to make that decision to

take that jump. We can´t just live life, standing at the edge wondering what it would’ve been like. I think there is a lot of freedom in taking risks and not playing it big all the time. So I wrote “Cliffs” for myself.

What artists have inspired your new sound?

I love all music genres but my main influences are The National, Coldplay and Radiohead. They are the ones I like to listen to myself so I´m sure the influences can be heard here and there.

When did you start writing the album ‘Walkaways’? Did you work on it for a while?

It took quite a bit but when I started recording, it took about two and a half months to really record everything. Then I decided to add three more songs, which were ‘Walkaways’, ‘Cliffs’ and ‘Dear Love’. So I went back into the studio and recorded and it took a month and a half to do those three. So it probably took four and a half months in total to do it all, it is quite a long process. But I think it was worth it.

Did you have any help writing this album or did you do it all on your own?

I wrote about half of it on my own and the other half I wrote with friends. I just love to collaborate with other writers sometimes, especially with friends of mine. It´s a little more enjoyable since I used to be in a band and write with other people. So now

when it´s just me and I don´t have that, I kind of miss it, so I meet up with some of my friends and it feels like I´m in a band again, even though I´m not.

Is there a song on your album that you like the most?

I love all of them, but I would say the song ‘Home’. It´s really mellow and I like songs like that. It´s more my style which might sound weird, but it mostly depends on what mood I´m in that day. I would say though that ‘Walkaways’ are the most fun to play live. It´s fun and energetic so I really do love ‘Walkaways’.

Did your past experience with Paramore help you in writing ‘Walkaways’?

I know I definitely learned a lot being in Paramore. I wouldn´t be the writer I am today without it so I´m very thankful for that opportunity and that I got to experience that. So I would definitely say that ‘Walkaways’ would not be what it is without my past experience with Paramore.

When creating this album, did you ever feel like your sound sometimes reminded you of Paramore?

The goal was to be different. I didn´t

want FARRO to be Paramore with my voice. I wanted to do something completely different. I really feel like ‘Walkaways’ definitely represents me as an individual but in some moments my music might sound a bit like Paramore because my brother Zac played the drums in the beginning of making this album and I played the guitar so that might have made it sound like Paramore in some ways. I did find it that other people expected my music to sound more like Paramore but then thought it sounded way different.

How would you describe your change in music and style?

Well, when I look back at pictures from when I was like 16 or 17 and what I was wearing, I´m like ‘Oh my god (laughs), I can´t believe I thought that was cool’, so I think that our musical taste are much like our style in clothes. In that young state of life, we like a specific kind of music and then we either grow out of it or we gain a

new interest. In my Paramore days, I was into a lot of heavy rock music and now that the years have gone by, I feel like I have crossed over to a more Coldplay kind of feel. It´s still high energy but it´s not as much rock.

You´re doing a UK tour throughout November, what´s to come from FARRO in 2017?

There is a lot going on at the moment. But if the UK tour goes well then I can guarantee that I will be back over early next year. Right now, we are just doing a lot of touring and I´m also writing new music. I´m really excited about the new music I have.

Maybe I´ll go to the studio and record when I have time. So the goal is to continue to tour and to come out with new music.

FARRO is currently touring the UK in support of his album ‘Walkways’.

album review: ‘Hamburg demostrations’ by peter doherty

H

e’s had probably one of the busiest careers in the indie/rock music genre.

Across multiple projects, Peter Doherty juggled releasing three albums with The Libertines; three albums with Babyshambles; one acclaimed solo album and soon he’ll be back with his second: ‘Hamburg Demonstrations’, all between the years 2002 to 2016.

After always wanting to work in Hamburg, as soon as Doherty was referred to Clouds Hill Recordings he eagerly showed up unannounced on their doorstep the following day. He then based himself there for the next six months, recording the whole album on a tape machine.

When giving the finished product a first listen, you can instantly tell that a lot of heart, soul and opinion have gone into his track listing choices.

‘Flags from the Old Regime’ is a newly renamed recording of the original Amy Winehouse tribute ‘Flags of the Old Regime’. It’s a song that has forever been a ‘work in progress’ - with Doherty experimenting with different versions since he wrote it in the immediate aftermath of her death.

It explores their relationship beyond the typical tabloid headline exposés, with Peter emotionally illustrating: “The fame they stoned you in, your tiny shoulders soldiered it, you made your fortune but you’re broke inside.”

‘Hell to Pay at the Gates of Heaven’ was also written after the Paris attacks at Le Bataclan last November.

This song laments the harsh reality of how young people are now picking up guns instead of guitars, as Peter sings: “Come on boys, choose your weapon, J-45 or AK-47?” - a Gibson J-45 being famed as John Lennon’s favourite acoustic guitar.

‘Down for the Outing’ is by far one of best hits on the album. It balances the perfect amount of complex acoustic guitar on top of a continuous catchy blues beat, with self-reflective, confessional lyrics including: “I’m sorry dad, I’m sorry for the good times that I had, oh they make me look so bad.”

The album also features two versions of the same poetic and charming song ‘I Don’t Love Anyone (But You’re Not Just Anyone)’. Whilst both versions are defiantly different, they equally demonstrate a more peaceful break from Doherty’s usual rumbling rock ‘n’ roll traits that he’s polished over the years alongside The Libertines and Babyshambles.

The first version, which Doherty released in September, is mostly guitar-based with the presence of drums playing a key role in making

this song so contrasting to the other.

It’s also so raw and clean-cut when it comes to his vocals - which has a lot to do with his unique and intimate recording method.

The second version is significantly slowed down compared to the original. It focuses more heavily on delicate violins and a much more calming, emotive pace; you can actually hear Doherty’s delivery extremely closely, with every emotional attachment to the words captured so meaningfully yet effortlessly.

Lyrically, ‘Hamburg Demonstrations’ is probably the most honest and personal album that we have heard from Doherty - and musically showcases that ideal balance from signature trademarks to experimental mix-ups. This is an album that would sound absolutely fantastic on vinyl.

LIVE REVIEW: SLAVES @ BARROWLANDS

ENGLISH PUNK DUO PERFORM AT ICONIC GLASGOW VENUE

t was a strange but interesting sight to see the clashing styles of the gig-goers waiting in line to see Slaves at their sold out Barrowlands show.

The majority of people either looked like they stepped right out of the 70’s London punk scene, or they were ready to spend a week shuffling at T in

the Park. It was the Dr Marten troops versus the Adidas army.

After entering the venue, it became even stranger to watch as those rocking heavy boots, ear stretchers and blue mohawks, mingle with those who wore their finest pair of trainers and their whitest Adidas three stripe tee. I could have spent all night watching these two tribes almost circle around each other, but it wasn’t long before the sup-

port act LIFE kicked off the night.

off as entertainment. If I ever hear one of their songs again, I will only see that man - my love for LIFE was gone before it started.

LIFE’s set included a song or two that I could really see myself enjoying after a few more listens. I was really into their Sex Pistols inspired sound, but only when I wasn’t looking at the stage. The second the band came into view, all positive thoughts disappeared and I could only focus the highly pretentious lead singer, Mez, awkwardly jerking around to his own song trying to pass it

Slaves started the show very fittingly with their song ‘Hey’ before barrelling onward with a mix of hits from their first album ‘Are You Satisfied’ and their new project ‘Take Control’.

While their classic hits such as ‘Sockets’ and ‘Where’s your car Debbie?’ proved to be as crowd pleasing as you would expect, it was uplifting to see many fans go just as crazy for some of their newer songs ‘People That You Meet’ and ‘Take Control’ especially.

Performing in front of a simple large print of their newest album cover, with only a small assortments of instruments onstage, there was a sense that the show was not intended to stun fans with theatrics and show stopping effects, but rather that this was 75 minutes for fans to come together and enjoy the music however they wanted.

Although having minimal interaction with the audience, the pair would occasionally pause between songs to talk to the crowd. At one point they addressed the audience to stop a fight that was breaking out between a few people near the front of the stage – which is something that the punk twosome are known for doing.

It felt like a safe place where the moshpitters and the nonmovers could both enjoy their time while doing their own thing - something which both the audience and band should be applauded on.

Although you won’t attend a Slaves gig and spend your night hearing their songs in a totally different way to how they sound on the album, you will have a great time rocking out to the songs you love with people who may not be dressed the same as you but will love the same music just as much.

His vocal tone will draw you in, but try as I might - and I’ve been thinking hard for a year now - I can’t name a single other singer he sounds like.

He has quietly been going about making waves in the Manchester area, having been featured on BBC Introducing’s Lancashire show, and his single ‘Honey’ was nominated for the Best Song of 2016 by Best of British Unsigned.

They’re the perfect kind of band to neck a beer and thrash along to, and with bands like Slaves having opened the doors for this kind of rougharound-the-edges indie rock, I feel fairly confident saying you’re going to hear a lot more of them soon.

9. Bedknobs and Broomsticks (Cosmic Creepers) When I re-watched this recently, it reminded me of how trippy this movie really is. It goes from war torn England one minute to an animated jungle the next and the cat

gets in on some of the black magic as the story progresses. The only reason this black cat is so far down the list is because another witch’s pet outdoes it.

8. Alien (Jones) Who can forget Sigourney Weaver and the ginger cat towards the end of this sci-fi classic? Some of the moments that had me most on the edge of my seat were when I thought Jones was going to be killed by the alien parasite on-board the ship. There’s also something oddly amusing about the fact that they randomly have a pet cat on a space ship.

7. Bagpuss (Bagpuss) This is quite possibly one of the most iconic children’s TV shows of all time. It is a simple idea - Emily’s toys coming to life to work out what strange new objects are - but that is the joy of it. This pink cat has deservedly become a piece of British screen history and kids to this day still have soft toys of it.

6. Friends (Smelly Cat) It might be considered a bit of a stretch to include this but in the episode where Phoebe makes a music video we do technically see Smelly Cat. That and the song itself is

5. The Aristocats (Duchess and Thomas O’Malley) It would be impossible to not include a film that actually centres on cats, especially when it is a Disney classic like this. While it may not be a personal favourite Disney animation, there are still some purr-fect (sorry) songs.

4. Alice in Wonderland (The Cheshire cat) Throughout the years there have been several screen incarnations of the cat with a terrifying grin. My favourite

is the Disney animation as it is both slightly sinister and also kind of trippy - the images of that pink and purple cat and the yellow cat’s eyes are imprinted on my mind (possibly because I watched it so much as a kid).

3. Inside LLewyn Davis (The ginger tom cat) Since the release of this Coen Brothers movie there have been all sorts of rumours circulating on the web that the cat was in fact the titular LLewyn Davis. Even if it isn’t actually, the ginger cat is still of pivotal importance to the charm of this severely underrated film.

2. Sabrina the Teenage Witch (Salem) Salem is probably the most iconic black cat to appear on our screens. This sassy black cat was one of the best bits of this 90s teen comedy series.

1. You Only Live Twice (Blofeld’s cat) This cat may not speak, like a lot of others on this list do, but it deserves to be number 1 simply for being so prominent in one of the most iconic scenes in not only James Bond history, but film history.

fter years of anticipation, the Harry Potter spin-off has finally arrived on-screen. It promises even more magic and boasts a stellar cast but does it live up to the hype?

Set in 1920s New York, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them establishes the wizarding world long before the Harry Potter era. Controlled

by MACUSA (the Magical Congress of the United States of America), wizards and witches have been driven into hiding from No-Majs (American for muggles). Then Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) rocks up and unwittingly unleashes havoc as magical creatures escape from his suitcase.

While it may sound like a rather pedestrian plot for J.K. Rowling to continue cashingin on her beloved franchise, it’s actually the sub-plots that have a lot to say about modern day politics. It isn’t preachy like Rowling’s Twitter account, though. Nobody is shouting “The sorting hat was trans!” here. Instead there are mad religious preachers warning

of the dangers posed by black magic and hierarchical magicians suppressing witches and wizards to prevent an all-out war.

For the first hour or so the plot essentially revolves around Newt and Jacob (a No-Maj he happens upon under extremely convoluted but very funny circumstances) catching creatures in New York. After this the plot takes a very dark turn and actually had some pretty dark jump scares, made all the more creepy for Ezra Miller’s performance as an abused young man, Credance Barebone.

The trailer may have made it look more like a child-friendly flick about catching magical creatures but when there are scenes of children being lashed with a belt, it’s easy to argue otherwise. Said scenes

were probably some of the most shocking. But most of the beasts are very cute to be fair.

Bringing comic relief to some of the darker moments and scenes which otherwise could have been rather pedestrian are Alison Sudol as Queenie and Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski. One of the few gripes with this film is that it seems a bit like Eddie Redmayne was just going through the motions and was outshone by Sudol and Fogler.

This is the first film in a proposed five film franchise so of course it has to spend some time establishing events still to come. It does this sparingly enough at the start so as to not become bogged down in excess mythology and worldbuilding.

There is also a twist at the end of the film that will have you begging for more. However, the prospect of Johnny Depp playing the villain, Gellert Grindelwald, in the next film still leaves a bit of a sour taste. There are many actors better suited to the role and people moved on from his schtick about five years ago (can you name a majorly successful film that he has headlined in the past few years?).

THE VERDICT: Despite a couple of minor gripes, not only does it live up to the hype but it far exceeds any prior expectations. It’s fantastic to have some magic back on the big screen at last.!

Stuart Graham’s 2016 Screen Review Every year there seems to be a swarm of movies that make their way onto our big screens and despite many of us ‘film types’ making it our objective to see all of them, the task is just too big to ever complete.

This year has seen the release of some unexpected incredible features, some highly anticipated smashes and some not so warmly received piles of garbage (yes, I’m looking at you Suicide Squad).

So as we draw close to the end of this eventful year, it seems apt that I take a look back at some of the films that have come through our cinemas, and privilege my own opinion to the extent that I take half a page to simply list my favourites and smear those that I didn’t enjoy.

So without further ado here is my list of the top 7 films of 2016 and a few that I hated to the point that I deviated from the easy “Top 10” structure that this article could have had, simply to include them.

This may paint me as petty but I simply love to hate films.

Conor Kane

The Accountant, starring Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, Jon Bernthal and J.K Simmons, is an action-thriller about a man who suffers from highfunctioning autism and leads a double life. To the public, he is an average accountant but secretly he uncooks the books for several criminal organisations.

The best way to describe this film is The Bourne Identity meets Rain Man, and the payoff is a surprisingly good formula. This is indeed a great film to watch.

It has an interesting story, interesting characters that are very well acted, and terrific action.

Ben Affleck plays the main character, Christian Wolff, and he is fantastic in this role.

7. Captain America: Civil War

The reason I loved this film so much was because it didn’t simply kick off Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but did so in such a manner that shifted the tone of the franchise and set a new stylistic standard for the superhero genre as a whole.

From the more edgy editing used in scenes of action to the stripped back boreoarctic dialogue in scenes of importance to the plot; it seems clear that the studio wants to move away from the shiny digestible high saturation aesthetic and tone of the previous phases and try taking the franchise into new unwalked territory.

INJECTION OF TERRIBLE FILM OF THE YEAR 2016 saw the classic sci-fi disaster film Independence Day receive a sequel (some say a long awaited sequel, but I personally could have waited a good while longer).

graphics that try desperately to echo the original.

The films wheels out some old stars who say some audience favourite catchphrases.

6. Finding Dory Although not quite living up to the heights of its predecessor, Finding Dory proved that Pixar is still leader of the pack when it comes to heartstringpulling animations.

Despite the slightly ridiculous last act that sees an Octopus steal a truck and drive it off a cliff into the ocean; the film weaves yet another interesting story with some mindblowing visuals and gives Dory a much needed back story that has adults and chil-

dren alike entirely invested in the films outcome.

5. Deadpool There was no way this comedic spoof wasn’t going to make this list. For those arguing that Deadpool isn’t a spoof, you are wrong.

It makes noticeable jokes about genre tropes while still fitting into them - i.e. Spoof.

The blockbuster smash released in early February took a whole new look at the superhero origin story and gave us a protagonist to root for who wasn’t only an unconventional hero but also hilariously quick witted when it came to addressing his foes. Definitely 2016’s comedic highlight.

4. Collateral Beauty (Predicted)

Although not released yet, Collateral Beauty is set to be one of my 2016 highlights.

Collateral Beauty features Will Smith as a New York advertising executive who retreats from all he knows after experiencing an intense personal loss and his emotional journey.

The film is glittered with stars such as Edward Norton, Helen Mirren, Naomi Harris, Kiera Knightly and Kate Winslet; promising to be one of this year’s big Oscar stealers.

Film Review: The Accountant

Affleck does a great job of portraying someone with autism.

From the advantages, like the high-level of concentration, which is shown by an amazing scene where Christian uncooks the accounting books of a company for the past five years in a short amount of time.

But also, the serious downsides of the neurological condition, such as difficulties communicating with others and a need for order.

There’s a great sequence in the film where Affleck’s character is stopped in figuring out a puzzle and his entire routine is thrown off and he’s clearly in serious distress over this.

And Affleck really sells the audience in this scene. You

feel his pain and anger. It’s a serious credit to Affleck as an actor.

And on the other side of the coin is Dana Cummings, played by Anna Kendrick, who is a young accountant assistant.

Kendrick brings her witty charm into yet another role as she acts as the comical balance to Affleck’s cold and serious performance.

The two are able to bounce off of one another extremely well, whether it’s a comical conversation, like their lunch outside, or an emotional one, like their talk in the hotel.

These two actors complement each other’s acting abilities greatly.

does well with utilising action.

The Accountant has some the best hand-to-hand fight scenes this year.

I would say the film was up there with the Bourne films in terms to the quality of these scenes.

The level of intensity of and suspense in each scene was fantastic.

The brilliant choreography, camera work and sound design helps the audience feel every punch and kick and the brutality of it all.

These positive points being said, the film does suffer from certain flaws.Whilst the story is interesting it’s also predictable.

At the end of the film there’s a certain twist that audiences can see coming from a mile away, and the film comes close to going into soap opera territory.

Which was kind of annoying because the film would have been better if they didn’t go

with that twist.

Another scene which brought the film down was where J.K Simmons’s character, Ray King, has a long monologue around the end of the film, where he explains his background and history with Christian Wolff.

This monologue is poorly written and doesn’t really make much sense.

It feels like something that would have been written for a Basic Cable action TV series. But not for a $44 million film.

Overall, The Accountant is an amazing action movie with interesting characters, great acting and superb action scenes which makes it worth watching at the cinema.

It does have certain flaws such as poor writing in certain scenes and a predictable twist ending. But these elements don’t slow it down.

MAtilda star is all grown up

orget The Cursed Child as the book of 2016, I had been waiting for Mara Wilson’s autobiography Where Am I Now since she dropped off the face of the earth in my tweenage years.

I was in awe of this brownhaired kid with an intense stare and who spoke with articulacy beyond her years.

I tried to track down every film she had ever been in and watched them religiously until Thomas and the Magic

Eventually in my early teens, I gave up refreshing Internet Movie Data Base and resigned myself to the fact I’d never know what happened to her.

Cut to about three years ago when I discovered her blog Mara Wilson Writes Stuff and whose humorous sassy tweets dubbed her the ‘Queen of Twitter’ by Buzzfeed. And my admiration of Mara Wilson had been reignited.

In her new book Where Am I

Now? True Stories of Girlhood and Accidental Fame she explains that while in 1996, I was ignorantly obsessing over her and wishing she was my BFF, she had just lost her mother to cancer before Matilda wrapped.

Her childhood neurotic fears of death and what would happen to my great-great-greatgreat grandchildren if the sun burned out were the exactly the same as mine when I was a child. She seemed so lonely in her thoughts that I wanted to reach into the pages, hug her child self and say ‘it’s ok I get those worries too’.

Wilson speaks openly about mental health in her book. The anxiety she felt after being labelled as ‘cute’ as a child star and being unable to meet Hollywood’s beauty standard and former fans as a young adult.

She says: ‘Being a celebrity meant my face, my body, even my death were for public consumption - none of this was mine alone. Others were angry. My image belongs to them, to their memories and their imagination and they aren’t happy when I don’t match up with what they pictured’.

Watching her child-star peers Scarlett Johansson, Kristen Stewart and Hilary Duff re-emerge into the limelight and describing them as ‘beautiful butterflies’, she reveals that she carried this anxiety into her twenties.

She also discusses the Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder she developed in her early teens and how she fought her ongoing mental battles.

By far the two most poignant parts of the book is the letter to Matilda in which she was conflicted about both admiring and resenting her trope when people would confuse the real-life actor with her character.

I wanted to reach into the pages, hug her child self and say ‘it’s ok I get those worries too’.

And there’s the moving blog post including memories and the face behind the mask of her Mrs Doubtfire co-star Robin Williams shortly after his unexpected death.

It’s probably a good thing that I purchased the book via Kindle as I have down-turned so many virtual pages, highlighted huge paragraphs and attached notes saying ‘that was so me.’

The collection of essays in Where am I Now would be an ideal Christmas gift for those just curious to know what was going on with Mara during her lost years or a re-assuring hand on the shoulder if you know of anyone battling mental illness.

A play and a pint’ is what was described in the program, and as I walked into Venue on Tuesday November 1, the first night of the production, the stunning direction of Duncan Lawrie and the production of Ainé Taylor, brought Stirling University Drama Society’s performance of Liz Lochhead’s ‘Perfect Days’ to life, and it was frankly hilarious.

The classic vulgar Glaswegian humour, the endless, yet sly, sexual innuendos and random musical outbursts kept me entertained, fascinated and eager to know more about these characters that were being portrayed before me.

For those of you are not familiar with the play, it follows the 39-year-old celebrity hairdresser Barbs Marshall fantastically portrayed by Grace Brammer – through her mid-life crisis and her desire to have a child before her biological clock runs out, all

the while trying to cling onto her youth and prepare for her future with her loveable flamboyant best friend, Brendan Boyle.

Gradually, what comes together is this merging of a complexity of motherhood. Along the way, we meet Barbs’ mother Sadie, who condemns the notion of single parenthood, and Davie Marshall, who is amicably separated from Barb. Just to add to the complexity of the family dynamic, a forbidden love emerges between Barb and the well-educated Grant Steele, who just happens to be the birth son of Alice Inglis, Barbs longest friend and exsister-in-law.

The family element and the warmth between all the characters was well achieved by all cast members, with the casting spot on. Each actor shared a physical likeness as Andrew Hart, Heather McNeil and James Craig depicted their characters to perfection. The portrayal of the family appeared very passionate and emotional when dealing with

issues within their dynamic but at the same time very raw, realistic and yet utterly captivating.

Grace Brammer’s performance as ‘Barb’ was sensational. She completely embodied the character and engaged the audience, making moments that Barb had so personal and intimate. A character who, due to her indiscretions, may not appear likeable but Brammer’s innovative performance added innocence and beauty which made the audience want to achieve her happiness, whichever way possible.

The highlight of the play had to come from Mullen’s portrayal of Brendan Boyle; we were introduced to his character by him dancing with a bottle of wine around the living room with Barb. The completely sassy and comedic character added a light-hearted attitude, especially to emotional moments throughout the play. From the witty comments to his disgust at a birthday jumper left me wanting to go on a night out with Brendan as his character and portrayal was simply

fantastic. The friendship between Barb and Brendan was portrayed beautifully and illustrated how much you rely on friendship as adults.

One also can’t forget Camilla Barnett’s stunning, yet hilarious portrayal of Sadia Kirkwood, the 61-year-old nag of a mother to Barb.

Continuously interfering and commenting on every aspect of her daughter’s life, Barnett’s performance was able to make the audience almost forget it was two actors, but a naggy mother, telling her 39-year -old daughter to tidy up, something we can all often relate to. The generation gap is very clear here by the dynamic between Sadie and Barb which was so interesting to see and handled brilliantly.

The stage design was a late 1990s to early 2000s living room area of Barb’s Merchant City apartment. No detail was too small, including the alcohol tray of many beverages. It is a shame that the society had a smaller space in Venue, but they did

work with what they had and used the space to the best of their ability. A special mention must go to all the behind the scene team who brought the play together in such a fantastic way.

Overall, I was completely blown away by SUDS’ performance. There was no moment where I was looking at my watch.. No moment as every cast member was completely connecting with and

captivating every member of the audience, in the emotional moments, all the while leaving everyone in stitches at the comedic ones. The play uniquely deals with rather harrowing topics which is often broken up with humour. However, all six cast members were sensational and added such emotion to their roles which they completely embodied, enchanting the entire audience, myself included.

he cure for cold rainy winter days? A cozy night in baking, eating and drinking these amazing wintery treats. ideal for those hosting a christmas party or as a relaxing break from end of term madness!

Method 1. Stone and chop the dates quite small, put them in a bowl, then pour the boiling water over. Leave for about 30 minutes until cool and wellsoaked, then mash with a fork. Stir in the vanilla extract. Butter seven mini pudding tins. Heat oven to 180C. 2. While the dates are soaking, mix the flour and bicarbonate of soda together and beat the eggs in a separate bowl. Beat the butter and sugar together in a large bowl until slightly creamy (the mixture will be grainy from the sugar). Add the eggs one at a time, beating well between additions. Beat in the black treacle then gently fold in one-third of the flour, Sticky toffee Pudding then half the milk, do not overbeat. Repeat until all the flour and milk is used. Stir the soaked dates into the pudding batter. Spoon it evenly beIngredients: -140g demerara sugar tween the tins and bake for 20-25 minutes, until risen and firm.

3. Meanwhile, put the sugar and butter for the sauce in a medium sauce-225g whole dates -2 tbsp black treacle -100ml milk pan with half the cream. Bring to the boil over a medium heat, stirring -175g boiling water -Cream or custard to all the time, until the sugar has completely dissolved. Stir in the black -1 tsp vanilla serve (optional) treacle, turn up the heat slightly and let the mixture bubble away for 2-3 extract For the tofee sauce: minutes until it is a rich toffee color, stirring occasionally to make sure it -175g self-raising -175g light muscovado doesn’t burn. Take the pan off the heat and beat in the rest of the cream. flour 4. Remove the puddings from the oven. Method 1. Put the chocolate in a pan with the milk. Gently heat, stirring until all the chocolate has melted. Continue heating until the milk is steaming (add Baileys if desired), then remove from the heat.

2. Divide the hot chocolate between 8 mugs, add sugar to taste and hang a candy cane on the edge of each. Stir the hot chocolate with the candy canes, letting as much of the peppermint dissolve. method 1. Heat the oven to 180C. Grease four small ramekins or ceramic heatproof cups.

2. In a mixing bowl, sift together the flour, caster sugar, half the cocoa powder and a pinch of salt.

3. In a separate bowl, combine the milk, egg, melted butter and vanilla. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and miz until smooth.

4. Spoon the mixture into the prepared dishes. Combine the brown sugar and remaining cocoa powder and sprinkle evenly over the top of each ramekin.

Long-line layers have been sort of a must have for this season and it is so easy to achieve with a long white shirt. Ribbed jumpers made an appearance last year and I love this one because the ribbing goes in different directions that really elongates your body. I added these black pleather high ankle boots for a little added height and also to correspond with the other black details in the outfit, like the bag and sunnies! By adding a lot of long items together you can create the look of being super tall while still looking super chic! I always try to do this with long coats and and some high boots like these ones from Public Desire. This look was really easy to achieve and is right on trend for the season, it’s perfect for a day out at the shops with your friends of just for going and grabbing a cheeky coffee.!

When it comes to being a little bit smarter, although I would probably wear this style any day of the week, androgynous fashion has been a bit hit this Autumn/Winter with women everywhere rocking a full on suit. It’s the ultimate power trend to automatically make you feel like you could run an international organisation without breaking a sweat! To achieve this trend I found these beautiful tailored trousers from Topshop with ruffle details on the pockets (another key trend for this winter) in a dogs-tooth pattern. Now you could style these with just a plain white tee for a super casual look, however, I went for the full shebang with a crisp white shirt and a classic long black coat for a simple yet sophisticated look and a simple grey scarf for a bit of added warmth.

For some extra comfort I shoved on a pair of simple white trainers with a snakeskin detail from New Look to add a bit of an athleisure edge to the look! This pleather backpack also from New Look is also the perfect accessory along with the shoes to add a casual element to the outfit.!

Interview with Mature Student Society’s founder Stuart Graham Features Editor At the start of this semester I interviewed Brig's own Arts Editor and third year Film and Media student Hayley Bannon about the Mature Student's Society she has been setting up for a couple of months now.

This is what Hayley had to say about it.

Q- What were your motivations for starting up the mature students society?

A – Well I was on the official freshers group page and I noticed a few people had mentioned they were mature students, like women who had children, and I just thought there was an opportunity there to create a group and it has become very successful.

Q – With this club being set up and getting rolled out this year, what do you want to see at the university in terms of how mature students are regarded?

A- I want to see them more recognised.

The most common comment I got from mature students was that they felt isolated.

One of the girls I spoke to even said this year she was going into forth year and hadn’t met any other mature students, four years being quite a long time.

I mean, you see people floating about but you don’t really know them much so its hard. As of yesterday, I’ve got 86 members on the Facebook group and everyone who has mentioned it to me has said it’s a really great thing and they are really looking forward to meeting other mature students as well.

I heard that there were mature student groups in the past that have just folded, I’m not sure why, but I’m determined that this is going to carry on as it seems to be a really great way to get mature students to meet others like them and I just feel like it is really needed right now in the university.

Q- So as the organiser, what do you want to see happen to the club? Is there a goal you have in mind?

A- Well I see societies as a really important part of the university experience and look great on CV, showing integration with other student and team building and

looking to do, creating a network of bodies of mature students who can simply help each other out when life gets in the way of their studies.

Q- So week to week and month to month what kind of activities have you got in mind?

But mature students have got a lot of commitments outside of university so maybe have children or jobs they are dependent on, so could potentially miss out on the society experience as committing to a society every week wasn’t feasible.

I have definitely experienced that, due to clashes with my working life.

As a self-supported student you need to keep your job, we don’t have the option of simply packing work in and just focussing on our studies.

I really need my job to get through summer. So the mature students group just

seems like a really great way of getting all these people together so we are less isolated.

I’d quite like to plan group events and get mature students’ kids involved, like some family friendly events, so they can really feel part of something.

That’s another thing the group is about, creating a network of students who support each other, who understand each other’s commitments and who can even arrange things like essay drop offs or collections; even just distracting kids for an hour so mature students cans study.

So that’s really what I’m

true to himself and speaking honestly. They trusted him.

This is important for anyone applying for any job.

Employers do not like being lied to. If there are inconsistencies in your CV or your interview answers an employer will see through this.

So always be honest. Present the best aspects of yourself, but don’t lie.

Maybe even some sort of come dine with me themed night and also a retro game show themed night as well.

I was thinking doing a giant crystal maze for one of the give it a go’s.

I’m really looking forward to hearing other people’s ideas because I kind of have an idea what people want but not 100% so need to hear some of their input as well.

Q- In terms of other societies on campus, how would you like to see their attitude change towards mature students after the formation of this group?

A- It feel a little harsh to say that mature students are downright excluded by your usual societies, I wouldn’t at

all want to condemn or look down on other societies.

I don’t think they mean to do it in any way, but I think the biggest issue is staying on campus.

When you’re that close, societies can quickly meet, or go to the pub or continue activities till the wee hours of the morning.

However other people like myself don’t stay nearby, like I personally like an hour away by car and two hours by train, need to head off to get transportation home so aren’t able to stay for full events or activities.

Which I feel like a serious issue, that mature students can’t stay for extended lengths of time.

I guess all I could really ask is a bit more understanding. I don’t there is a particular, or intended, negative attitude toward mature student.

Stirling as a university is quite an inclusive community, I just feel mature students sometimes get a big marginalised because of the sea of 17-20 year olds.

I don’t feel like the attitude needs to change exactly, mature students just need to be a bit more recognised.

2016 has been a relatively strong year for gaming, with VR strides dominating the scene, but console and PC releases also offering some impressive novelties. From platformer to FPS to old-school adventure, as well as some new hybrid genres, this year offers releases for all tastes and preferences.

So, which games actually delivered? Here is a breakdown of 2016’s most anticipated releases and their performance, festively illustrated by the Twelve Days of Christmas ranking system, naturally.

Inside This Limbo follow-up is anything but a regular 2-D platformer. Atmospheric, haunting, terrifying and so extremely satisfying, are all appropriate descriptors.

The puzzles are intricate, the juxtaposition of innocence with menace is poignant, and the protagonist’s actions are detailed to an unnerving precision.

Down-sides? Well, the length for one - this is a short run. A lso, the ending is a mind-blowing and controversial twist which will leave you dumbfounded.

Overall, though, a thoroughly enjoyable experience, which, I believe, surpasses its predecessor. 10 Lords-a-Leaping, easy.

Quantum Break This Xbox One exclusive focuses on innovative immersion.

Essentially an experimental blend of live-action television series and gameplay, it features A-list actors, vivid mo-cap and well-chaptered story.

The game is smooth and polished, and the narrative is high quality.

On the flip side, it becomes pretty convoluted as a complex backstory is revealed, often making it challenging to keep up.

So overall, we’re treated to a great visual spectacle, one which unfortunately takes precedence over the player’s role in the experience.

This gives Quantum Break a solid 8 Maids-a-Milking.

Superhot If nothing else, Superhot revolutionized the traditional concept of first-person shooters.

In an aesthetically pleasing world, you witness stealth meet skill and strategy, while maintaining the action and fast pace of a FPS. The time-freeze concept is refreshing and well-presented.

After a dozen levels, however, not even that edginess can keep the monotony away.

I would say this is a great introductory sub-genre, but not an engaging prolonged experience, thereby offering Superhot 7 Swans-a-Swimming.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End One of the most anticipated releases of this year does not disappoint.

The characters are interesting and far from being two-dimensional, there’s tasteful humour in the dialogue, the plot is engaging, the visuals stunning, and the pacing of the action is just right.

I was pleasantly surprised at this instalment, as I believe it to be monumentally superior to its ancestors.

The story ties all plot ends into neat little bows, and the ending is satisfying without being cheesy.

Sony skilfully combines the bits that shone in the antecedent games with numerous new elements which results in a much wider audience range.

11 Pipers Piping, justly earned.

short, ambiguous ending even more dissatisfying.

For that injustice, the best I can do is 10 Lords-a-Leaping.

Dark Souls 3 By now, the infamous mockery that the Dark Souls franchise makes of players should be of no surprise to anyone.

You need buckets of patience and the resilience of an ox to get through even the most mundane of foes, not to mention the boss fights and the set-backs of save-points.

Dark Souls 3 remains true to character, and offers the player more challenges and yet more gothic atmospheric immersion in this new instalment.

Although difficult, none can say that the storyline or gameplay are monotonous or tedious; the graphics remain fantastic and the score is brilliant.

Although it did not take many risks or break away from its preset conventions enough for my taste, it’s still a highly enjoyable experience for any player with a solid patience threshold.

9 Ladies Dancing.

This impressive project was an unexpected treat.

There are few other games, if any, that can mimic or surpass the character development and realism portrayed here.

The entire storyline is anchored in the captivating interaction between the protagonist and the distant Delilah, peppered with unsolved mysteries and occasionally straight-up terrifying subplots.

There’s depth, suspense and a ton of heart in it, which made the cut-

If taken to be a milestone for the future of in-game AI, and judged solely on its spectacular graphics and atmosphere, the game becomes enjoyable.

Nonetheless, I cannot offer it more than 6 Geese-a-Laying.

Civilization VI

Overwatch Blizzard is on a roll this year.

Overwatch brings genuinely touching notes into team-oriented FPS, making everyone feel like the hero we had always wanted to become for our team. The maps are limited and the storylines aren’t that diverse, but that is definitely not the focus of this project.

This game will make one forget about the dark places CS and other team-based titles took us to, as Overwatch brings the heart back into multiplayer - earning it 10 Lords-a-Leaping.

This was arguably the biggest letdown of this year’s titles, in no small part due to the three-year hype it has created prior to its release.

The infinite diversity manufactured by the AI engine was meant to supply unending gameplay variety and possibilities.

The reality, however, showed the numbers of Steam players dwindle by tens of thousands within just a few hours, as it became apparent that no matter how many new planets you discovered, and how diverse they are, they are all alike in their diversity.

This paradox, which quickly made the initial thrill of planet-hopping a mundane chore, left thousands upon thousands crestfallen.

The latest addition to Sid Meier’s army of strategy gems shines.

It boasts improved graphics, more intuitive controls, and loads of new quirks and humour in its various developments (which there are many).

The Civilization series has always been vast, but this one must surely take the cake, as there are worthy easter eggs to be found even after 100 hours of gameplay.

Truly addictive and fun. 9 Ladies Dancing for this one.

The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine Firstly, this brilliant conclusion to the story of Geralt doesn’t resemble an expansion, as it offers much more content than many fully fledged games.

Secondly, it’s stunning. Far from continuing in the bleak, war and plague-ridden world of the original Witcher, Blood and Wine takes us to a paradisal countryside the likes of which we haven’t seen in the franchise.

The environments are incredibly vivid and delectable, and the haunting new adversaries well developed, with a good balance of lore and action.

The NPC’s are minutely detailed and there is a ton of funky new adjustments and buffs introduced here. Besides the bittersweet knowledge of every successful mission bringing me a step closer to the end of this character’s tale, I genuinely found no flaws in this gem.

Watch Dogs 2 Ubisoft really took the criti-

cisms of the original Watch Dogs to heart, as it has released the sequel that vindicates the franchise.

Watch Dogs 2 is unadulterated fun. The world is vast, our hacker protagonist more relatable and relevant, the twists are exciting, and the missions are meticulously, and hilariously, planned out (the takeover of the Church of Scientology being a memorable one).

Moreover, the game drops its leadyou-by-the-hand dynamic, and offers you many ways of customising your own playing style.

Despite the abundance of heavy weaponry and a Grand Theft Autotype route available to you, I found that the game really comes into its own with stealth and strategy and not the gun-heavy approach.

The only down-side is the often cheesy millennial dialogue, making sequence-skipping tempting, which is a shame.

10 Lords-a-Leaping for a great overall venture.

Battlefield 1 Many were wary of EA hinging its hyped-up new release on as sensitive a topic as the Great War. The manufacturer nimbly traversed those controversial trenches, though, and delivered a true masterpiece.

Everything about this game is above par. The fine-tuned attention paid to the smallest details like insect sounds, shadows, dialogue, mission fluidity, and tone direction, all come together to produce a goose-bump-worthy experience.

This is a strong contender to be the best-told FPS story of the past five years.

The game follows the compelling war-stories of five different soldiers, bringing variety and personal engagement - the player is heavily invested, and the realistic historical setting only adds depth to that experience.

Brilliant release, surpasses all expectations.

tirling University’s women’s rugby team are currently undefeated in the Scottish 1A BUCS league.

With the help of two coaches, the team have grown in terms of performance over the past two years and are continuing to do so this year.

Another huge factor in their success is the increase of popularity of the sport, in no small part due to Great Britain’s performance in the rugby sevens at Rio 2016, as well as the women’s Six Nations competition, with two Stirling players – Debbie Falconer and Rachel Shankland - part of the Scotland setup.

With a whole team of new members, it’s great to see such an interest in what is commonly perceived as a ‘male’ sport.

recently had the pleasure of interviewing Robbie Stuart, captain of the men’s water polo team, and Iona Hamilton, a fresher on the women’s water polo team who is playing the sport competitively for the first time.

How have you found the training this year?

RS: The training is very high intensity, it’s exhausting! You need it for the games though because the sport is essentially wrestling in the water.

The training this year has helped with the fitness of the team and it feels like now the ability of the team is a lot higher than in previous years.

The journey hasn’t been easy, but the group have put a huge amount of effort into building themselves into the team they are today over the past few years. With two coaching sessions a week, a strength and conditioning session, each and every one of the players puts their all into every training session, with the results clear to see on game day.

Many people are shocked when our players tell them they play women’s rugby.

‘You’re too small!’ they say.

You’re too ‘delicate’ to play what is perceived as such a ‘brutal’ sport is another one regularly put forward.

Height, size and weight don’t matter – as long as you know to pass the ball backwards and are willing to support your team mates, you don’t need anything else!

team was because they wanted to try something different and be part of a team sport.

After the initial ‘first game’ nerves, none of them are fazed by the contact anymore, with many proudly showing off their bruises!

The pain, the injuries, the broken bones - they’re all worth it when you come off the pitch with a sense of pride that you’ve gave your all and supported your team mates.

A 38-7 win over Aberdeen at home has set them up for a pre-Christmas run-in that includes trips to Glasgow Caledonian and Dundee, with the girls up for the challenge of continuing their fantastic early season form.

President Kristy Reynolds is confident for the rest of the season: “I am phenomenally proud of the effort and dedication of the team. We have a strong

group of experienced players, joined this season by approximately 15 keen and excited freshers, so there is some real balance in the squad. It bodes well for the future of women’s rugby at Stirling University.

“We are so far undefeated in the league, although we still have a long way to go in the season. We are targeting an extended cup run, and to challenge for promotion into the national league.”

IH: I like the training in the pool, especially when it’s tough. In water polo you need to sprint for the ball a lot, so in practice we do lots of sprinting drills, which can be tough but still fun.

Had you ever played before coming to univeristy?

RS: I had, but I only started playing the position in January. I’m still making some mistakes and getting used to it, but I can feel myself improving.

IH: I’d never played a team sport competitively (before coming to university), and it’s a whole new experience.

How do you think the

season gone so far?

RS: We had a shaky start at the beginning but things are looking up. I’m very optimistic that we will do better than last season.

IH: We have played well in most of our games. We have been playing especially well defensively, but we need to attack more and try to score more goals. There have been a few tough games, but overall it’s been good so far.

Recruitment-wise, did you have a successful semester?

RS: Recruitment can be difficult; however, we got a lot of guys that are swimmers that maybe played a bit before but nothing too serious.

Because they have played before, they understand the basics of the game, which is good as it makes it easier to help them get a lot better.

IH: I feel really positive about the rest of the season.

The team is playing well and we newbies can only get better!

Fact: Stirling women's 21-0 win over RGU is the biggest in their BUCS league so far.

Triathlon club set Stirling University Trampoline and Gymnastic club aim for gold for big season Heros Lubangu

ymnastics gains a lot of media coverage during the summer Olympics, but here at Stirling University the sport, along with trampolining, merits attention all year round. The university club, which combines gymnastics and trampolining, have enjoyed a headlinemaking start to the new academic year.

I was fortunate enough to catch up with Emma, Danny and Alice, who have combined their love of gymnastics and trampolining within the Stirling University Trampoline and Gymnastics Club.

With a total of 12 medals so far this season (eight gold, one silver and three bronze), they were quick to point out that this is just the beginning of a promising year ahead.

Last season finished on such a positive that perhaps the summer break came at the wrong time; however, the club are looking to continue this good form in the upcoming events in this calendar year and the next.

Sitting second in the SSS League One thanks to their successes in Dundee and Aberdeen, the team are set up well for the season ahead..

The squad at the University of Stirling have proved that last season’s heroics were not just by chance, and they are certainly going to cause more upsets this time around.

Their efforts haven’t gone unnoticed and are well de-

served. There is an understandable element of team work and trust within the group, with each individual’s effort playing a central role

Photo credit - Hannah McNicol when determining competition success. The old cliché ‘practice makes perfect’ may certainly be worn-out in a sporting context, but it typifies the attitude necessary for success in this competitive arena.

The early-rises and the late-nights of three trampolining training sessions per week, often accompanied by two gymnastics training sessions, certainly take their toll in this demanding season.

The commitment and determination is a challenge, but a worthwhile one that generates rewards of success and satisfaction amongst countless others. Notably, the enjoyment level of the sessions

Dundee performances and are seeking to return home with even more success.

Further key dates in the calendar include competitions at the start of February 2017, followed by a tricky trip to Glasgow at the beginning of March.

The end of that same month features the competition in which the club were victorious at last year, so going into the venue as victors will certainly provide them with stern opponents aiming to knock them off their perch.

Participation rates can often be unsteady in trampolining and gymnastics, but not for these three loyal gymnasts, who all have ex-

tensive backgrounds in the field. With the combined experience from these three competitors, together with the vast ability of others in the group, there is no doubt that a top of the table spot is within their grasp.

Joining the club has provided fantastic memories for them and many others, with the numerous international students who have joined not having any regrets. The fact that many have joined the club at differing levels of ability highlights the positive environment provided by the existing members, who often double as coaches.

The club’s strong link with Scottish Gymnastics has provided this opportunity for members to become coaches through undertaking courses throughout the year. The club strongly supports its members learning more about the sport and working their way through the specific levels, with many members seeking to develop their coaching expertise in the upcoming December coaching exam.

The busy schedule should be nothing to fear for possible newcomers, who will be welcomed into the club with open arms. A challenge awaits for those who might want to try a new sport or develop their current ability, but no matter what level of involvement, there will always be time to have fun.

riathlon is a threesport event that involves swimming, cycling and running, often in that order.

Here at Stirling, the university club excels at all three disciplines.

Stirling University’s exceptional Triathlon team has earned many victories - several at international level - throughout this year and continue to climb up the ladder of development.

Three of Stirling University’s triathletes received callups to Team GB this year, with Grant Sheldon, Natalie Milne and Douglas Roberts competing in the World University Championships in Switzerland.

In the Men’s Elite category, Sheldon’s exceptional effort allowed him to take home the gold medal in a time of 01:46:57, with Roberts finishing 20th with a time of 01:51:37. In the Women’s Elite category, Milne finished 20th with a time of 02:05:12.

The recent Stirling Aquathlon also saw a demonstration of the talent the club has at its disposal, with the club claiming a clean sweep of the podium positions. The university team’s coach Gordon Crawford finished first overall in the main event.

Perhaps Stirling University is on its way to having our own one-two punch in triathlon competition. Hannah Howitt and Aoife Fay (above right) both represent the Uni-

versity of Stirling Triathlon club, with both competing in the Women’s Team Category in the BUCS Hill Climb, coming home with an outstanding third place finish.

Prior to university, Howitt had a swimming background and joined the University of Stirling’s triathlon team primarily due to the team’s visible standards. Fay has participated in multi-sport competition prior to arriving at the university, and has continued her development with the club.

The triathlon team have set their standards high this coming year, as they aim to be the highest scoring university triathlon team in Scotland in BUCS points.

Howitt mentions that she hopes to land a place in the Commonwealth Games in 2018, as it would be “an amazing opportunity and experience” to participate in an event of that scale.

One thing is for certain – Stirling University Triathlon Club are already set for a big year both in and out of competiton.

ast year’s national finalists got off to a less than spectacular start to the season and currently hold a 1-1 record after losing their first game of the season on the road to Derby Braves by a score of 40-37. The Clansmen’s first victory of the season was at home to Loughborough Students, a clutch overtime victory with the score being 13-6. In two intense games there is one thing that is distinctly obvious; the competition is much improved this season.

“As we have seen, our division is really competitive this year. This is a very good thing as we will elevate our game and it will bring out the best in us in all the matches that we play.” Club President Arnold Masayila said. “When every game is a test it is so much more satisfying, as weknow we are playing against good competition.”

Masayila mentioned that the reigning national champions, the Birmingham Lions, had also suffered a shock defeat early in the season. They fell at the hands of

the Bath Killer Bees, a team who the Clansmen swatted out the way in the quarter finals of last season’s playoffs, so both the North and South Divisions look wide open.

“It’s refreshing to see the increase in competition, in a league that has quite frankly been dominated by the Stirling Clansmen and Birmingham Lions of late” said Masayila.

With intentions of returning to the playoffs and aspirations of winning back the national title, it is imperative that the Clansmen recruit well. “Recruitment has been good as always with key

additions on both sides of the ball. Mykel Nixon, Emmanuel Bawa and Nathaniel Prince all played in the Birmingham University Junior Programme but opted to further their education at Stirling and play for the Clansmen, it’s fantastic to see that we have appeal even behind ‘enemy lines” Masayila said.

“In addition we have obtained Ti Denzyl Ojuyah joining from the University of Brunel. Ti was a key player in the London Blitz’s most recent campaigns in the adult league. He comes to Stirling

with a wealth of experience, including playing for the National University Team.”

Alongside the recruited players, the Clansmen have also obtained a number of ‘true rookies’ who have never played

the sport competitively before, with some exciting prospects in the form of the likes of Edd Keeler, Kerr Thomson and Morgan Bailey. A new coaching gulf sees four former players - Malik Mustapha, Greg Atkinson, Jorge Guitierez Rubio and Jonathon Neilson - strengthen Victor Peredo’s coaching force, keeping with the modern tradition of all coaches being former players on the team.

He then went on to speak about how the team was looking to encourage crowd participation, “We are hoping to implement play by play commentary, as well as introducing halftime shows which would result in prizes for participants. We have strong links with the Kilted Kangaroo, the university cheerleaders and The Stirling University Dance society, so we will be looking to provide shows and performances alongside the football match. In an ideal world it will be a spectacle and an enjoyable experience for the entire

student population.”

As well as fighting for results on the pitch, Masayila made it clear that the steady improvements off the pitch are pivotal to the success of the team. “I am the team’s president, so I am in charge of the day to day running of the team. I have a nine man committee, some examples being the secretary, treasurer and kit manager, and I need to oversee that their roles are being carried out efficiently.”

He then suggested that the committee’s performance impacts on the team; good committee work allows the players to focus on their performance and studies, and not have to worry about what is going on behind the scenes. The public relations team and social media team have been strengthening bonds with sponsors and allowing former players and fans of the team to keep up-to-date with what is currently happening with the team.

Before the Christmas break the Clansmen have two more home ties – fierce rivals Durham Saints visit Stirling on 4 December, before newly promoted Nottingham Trent Renegades make the trip north seven days later. These are two key matchups for the team, which could have a large stake in the Clansmen’s seeding for the playoffs.

A

fter a disappointing relegation from Scottish 2A last season, men’s hockey firsts have bounced back in style. They currently sit top of the Scottish 3A and have progressed to the Conference Cup final with five wins in six games (at the time of print).

At home they have yet to concede a BUCS match, which is spectacular. They kicked off their Gannochy fixtures with a thumping 6-0 rout of Glasgow Caledonian 1sts, putting down a marker for the rest of the season.

A 5-0 demolition of Glasgow 3rds followed, before the team suffered their first loss of the season, losing 4-2 away to Glasgow.

At the time of writing their last home match ended with thumping 6-0 victory against St. Andrews 2nds. Callum Brown (President) was responsible for a hat-trick and spoke of his optimism at the end of the match.

He said: “It’s been a really good season so far. The team’s doing really well, we’re getting on together and we’re a lot happier than we were last season. Taking it into the rest of the seasonnext semester- we’re confident that we can sort out the league and get to the cup final as well.”

After crushing Heriot-Watt 2nds 9-0 a few weeks ago, the 1sts have reached the final eight and will face off against the St. Andrew’s 2nds once more in the Conference Cup

quarter-finals. .

The 2nds are also progressing nicely in the Conference Cup and are threatening to steal the limelight with their cup exploits so far this campaign.

With a tricky away tie to Glasgow Caledonian 1sts, Stirling played out of their skin against a team in the league above to take the game in a 2-2 penalty flick draw.

Keeper Matthew Brews was the hero, making three saves to send his side through.

They went on to defeat the top team in the division, Edinburgh 5ths, 4-2 in a thrilling game. They will face Strathclyde 2nds at home in the quarter-finals, who are neck-and-neck with the 1st team at the top of Scottish 3A. After narrowly missing out on promotion last year, the 2nds will be looking to top the table this time around.

Confidence is high throughout the club, with each men’s team showing their prowess.

With Stirling’s men’s hockey sides performing well, we could be in for a trophy-laden season down at the Gannochy.

New coach adds to winning feeling for Men’s Football Seconds

W

ith their worst score being a 2-1 loss against Sheffield away, Stirling Men’s football’s Seconds have only lost one BUCS match this season.

They have only lost two matches in the East Scotland League. an impressive record for the only Stirling team in the league.

All of this has been achieved with a veteran squad and no coach. While talking to captain Harry Lindsey, Joe Greig (right-back) and the team’s top scorer of the semester Malcolm Burgess (striker) it became clear they were a cohesive team who worked

together and supported each other.

As a veteran squad, made up of third and fourth years, the balance of football training, competing twice a week and the large amounts of university work must be hard to manage.

Yet these boys make it

work. With a mutual understanding of the situation if a player cannot play, he lets the rest of the team know and is not selected.

With two leagues to compete in, they also rotate the teams as much as they can while also trying to put forward their strongest squad.

When discussing the two different leagues, Burgess describes the two different styles required. One is against other university teams, whilst he describes the other league as being “kicked about the park”. It is a much rougher league with more physical contact, but it is a style of football they do not mind. The two different surface types, astro versus grass, allow for diverse styles of play.

This team is very player run as they have been competing in BUCS without a coach until the start of November. The team was a group decision, with all opinions and situations considered. Ultimately, however, the decision is left to captain Lindsey and Angus Dey. Their training sessions are kept light and were again organised by the team. Between training early on Monday and Thursday morning and competing on Wednesday and Saturday, they need to keep it light.

A number of the team have had high level experience.

Yet, the society has been backing them. They have had combined training sessions with the thirds and the first’s head coach, Shelley Kerr, attended their first match to help support and bolster them from the side lines.

The team also confirmed that Frank Nuttall was appointed to the position of manager in the middle of November.

With experience coaching all over the world, including China, Qatar and around Africa, he has also worked closer to home with both Hibernian and Rangers.

This is quite a coup for the boys and, having watched this man in work, he appears to be helping them achieve more success.

Tait in Sirens squad (cont’d from back page) of this and it doesn’t have to just be a hobby.

“If you keep working hard, you can go professional, and the pathways and initiatives that the Sirens can hopefully offer young girls are so important.”

As well having signed professional terms with the Sirens, Tait is also juggling university and work commitments as she prepares for the season ahead. So just how is she adapting to the life of a student athlete?

“It’s been difficult!” she laughs. “I’m obviously in my third year of uni, alongside the Sirens and the national setup, and I’ve got a parttime job to fund all this. So you could say spare time islimited!

“Thankfully, though, I’m in the Scottish Institute of Sport and there’s a lot of really good people helping us all there. I’ve got a lifestyle coach who helps me organise my training, and Gail and the other coaches have been

great. They understand my situation and give me leeway – if I say I’ve got an exam, they’re not going to say you have to miss it!”

The Sirens begin their season with a home match at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena against Wasps on 21 February. With the amount of talent at coach Parata’s disposal, Tait is confident the side will quickly establish themselves at the business end of the Superleague.

“We’re aiming for top four at the end of the season. We had a meeting with all the coaching and playing staff and Gail sat us down and said “this is what we’re going for. Do you think that’s reasonable?” Everyone immediately answered yes.

“Having that aim really pushes you on. We want to make an impact and make our mark on the league.”

With aims like that, expect to hear a lot more about both the Sirens and Tait in 2017.

Sport Stirling’s Tait answers Sirens call Craig Wright Sports Editor

A

fter 2016 saw a number of University of Stirling students make the sporting headlines, the next twelve months could be just as significant for another member of Scotland’s university for sporting excellence.

In late October, the squad for the newly-formed Sirens Netball franchise was announced ahead of the 2017 Vitality Superleague season.

Amongst the players unveiled was Stirling’s very own Lauren Tait, and the 20-year-old is clearly loving life as part of Scotland’s only professional netball outfit.

“It’s been so good!” says Tait. “The players in the Sirens are obviously the best in Scotland and we’ve got really good people who have come in from abroad – their experience is insane!”

The Sirens have certainly recruited well ahead of their debut season. Jamaica’s Althea Byfield will provide a wealth of experience to the side’s defence, having won 112 international caps to date.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the court, Ellen Halpenny will return to the city in which she claimed a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, with the New Zealander offering a clinical attacking edge.

There’s also an experienced hand at the helm of the new franchise. Former New Zealand legend Gail Parata will combine her duties as Scottish national coach with the

head coach role at the Sirens, with Tait quick to acknowledge the value of Parata’s influence on the squad.

“It’s so important to have that knowledge around. Gail has so much experience from playing the game herself, and her coaching technique is so good.

“The fact she’s also the national coach is also a bonus – you know that what she’s doing is 100% the right thing.”

The connection between the national setup and the new franchise has been quickly established, with Scotland captain Claire Brownie amongst several internationals joining the franchise.

With young Scottish talent like Tait also joining the squad ahead of the new campaign, is this pre-established connection important to the side?

Tait nods: “I think it is, yeah.

Having trained with some of the girls at a national level, you know how each other play, how to pick each other up after a bad day and how to spur each other on in training. Having known these girls before, you know they share your desire to do well.”

Indeed, 2016 has been a successful year for both Tait and Scottish netball overall. As well as being named as Scotland under-21 player of the year, Tait was also part of the Scottish under-21 squad that recently finished second at the Youth World Cup qualifiers.

That result saw them secure their place at the tournament in Botswana next summer, and the Stirling student is eagerly looking ahead to the competition in store.

“We recently got drawn into our groups [Scotland will face New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Northern Ireland and Samoa] and we obviously want to make as big an impression as we can.

“Netball in Scotland is growing and we want to be one of the leading sports in the country.

“Having that success in the qualifiers was unbelievable – to beat Wales and Northern Ireland was massive, as was finishing second in that qualifying tournament for the first time in years.”

That drive to become one of the leading sports in Scotland is likely to only be further enhanced by the creations of the Sirens as a franchise, with a professional contract now a tangible goal for many young girls across the country. It’s a goal that Tait is keen to reinforce when asked about the importance of the franchise.

“We’re obviously aiming to get more people involved with netball, and having the Sirens really does give us that added extra of being able to show girls that you can make a career out
