THE IMPACT OF GIVING

A WORD FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND HEADMASTER

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU TO OUR SUPPORTERS

We extend our sincere gratitude to all members of our community who supported Brighton Grammar School in 2025. Thanks to your incredible generosity, we have advanced our mission of delivering high-performance outcomes through holistic education in a nurturing environment.

Over the following pages, the generosity of our community is highlighted, reflecting the connection and shared vision that defines what it is to be BGS.

In Term 1 we proudly celebrated the opening of The Duigan Centre, a stateof-the-art learning facility eight years in the making. This milestone achievement represents not only our commitment to investing in the future of education at BGS but also what can be achieved with the collective support of our community.

Our commitment to literacy excellence was embraced wholeheartedly during our annual BGS Giving Day in May. Now in its eighth year, the 2025 Appeal focused on redeveloping our Secondary School Library and Resource Centre and thanks to the enthusiastic support of parents, staff, Old Boys, and sponsors, we raised an overwhelming $312,000 doubling our fundraising goal in just over the 18 hours! We were thrilled to complete

the project in Term 4 and welcome staff and students into this vibrant new space.

Our Brighton Grammar School Scholarship Program continues to thrive, with individual supporters and foundations generously funding opportunities for students each year, now with 25 means-tested and bursary support opportunities offered. We are pleased to share the positive progress of some of our current scholarship recipients in this report and remain committed to supporting all their ongoing growth and success.

Looking ahead, our focus on long-term financial sustainability is reflected in the growing support of our legacy giving program, the Sequamur Society. Bequests continue to strengthen the future growth of our School with 120 members of our society. This year we proudly celebrated the legacy of the Talbot Family whose ties between Brighton Grammar’s rich history and its future aspirations are wholeheartedly intertwined.

Along with our legacy giving program, our Endowment Fund remains a cornerstone of our strategic vision. Through the Foundation’s careful governance and planning, the fund continues to grow, ensuring financial stability and supporting our long-term initiatives that will benefit students for decades to come.

IMPACTING THE LIVES OF OUR BOYS

A SIGNIFICANT YEAR FOR BGS

It has been a year of significant steps forward, as we continue to strive in creating a first-class learning environment for our students, staff and community.

In February, we proudly opened The Duigan Centre, a milestone made possible by our generous community and officially opened by members of the Duigan family. The spaces are alive with a hive of activity, and the boys are reminded daily of the families whose support has enabled them to learn in such a conducive environment.

Thanks to our Annual Appeal and Voluntary Fee donors, the Secondary School Library and Resource Centre has had a significant refurbishment and uplift. We look forward to showing our donors through in early 2026. We are also pleased that we have finished the new Ian McPherson Food Tech Centre which houses 12 kitchen workstations seamlessly connected to The Duigan Centre, expanding opportunities for our students.

Beyond facilities, our Scholarship program continues to grow, with two new donor funded means-tested scholarships launching in 2026: The Sliding Doors Foundation Scholarship and The Ashanti-Ianthe Scholarship, opening doors for more deserving students.

Legacy giving at Brighton Grammar through our Sequamur Society has seen seven new members in growth, both through indicated and realised gifts. The impact of realised gifts has been

profound, especially the legacy of Peter Fleming, honoured through the ‘Peter Fleming Learning Lane’ now visible for all students and community as they pass through The Duigan Centre. His gift has exceeded our belief and is now the largest contributor of our campaign in support of The Duigan Centre. We thank our new members of the Sequamur Society, your investment is vital for our future and will be transformative for years to come.

None of the above-mentioned progress is possible without our passionate community. Your belief in our vision ensures Brighton Grammar continues to leave a positive impression on those who

pass through its halls. Thank you to all our connected and generous community, your passion helps to make sure BGS continues to achieve great things for our students.

LITERACY EXCELLENCE IN FOCUS

GIVING DAY 2025

The Secondary School Library and Resource Centre was finalised during Term 4. We thank our 2025 Appeal donors for your generosity and supporting us with this initiative. With a fundraising goal of $160,000 our community rallied behind this project and exceeded our expectations, raising a total of $312,000. We acknowledge and thank John Link (OB 1953) as one of our major supporters of this appeal and extend our sincere gratitude to our eight generous matching donors, the Mence Family, the Jones Family, the Kallos Family, the Rofe Family, the Lees Family, Ontoit, Bluff Road Medical, and World of Music. The new library will house the English faculty, Library staff, host classes, hold our collections and provide spaces for reading and collaboration

opportunities. We look forward to this light-filled, soft and inviting space being full of activity and operational throughout 2026 and beyond.

We are immensely grateful to all those who have supported this important redevelopment, supporting our focus on literacy excellence.

TUESDAY 26 MAY

A SPACE THAT INSPIRES

REFLECTIONS ON THE DUIGAN CENTRE

From the moment I first stepped into The Duigan Centre, I was amazed. It didn’t feel like a typical school building, the vibe it exuded made it feel alive. The modern architecture, the iconic Duigan Brothers’ plane suspended from the ceiling, and the vibrant atmosphere all contributed to an immediate impression of innovation and energy. It’s the kind of space that you feel grateful to be part of. I felt incredibly fortunate to have my tutor space located there.

When reflecting on other learning spaces I’ve experienced, The Duigan Centre stands out. The facilities, especially the art, woodwork, and music areas are both extremely functional and inspiring. The space reminds me of a university: professional and well-equipped, yet still warm and welcoming in the way a school should be. It’s the kind of environment that encourages you to strive for your best.

Studying in The Duigan Centre has had a noticeable impact on my motivation. Having my Psychology class held there and as a visual learner, the enhanced presentation tools have deepened my understanding of complex concepts. For example, the combination of whiteboards and projectors has transformed the way lessons are delivered, making them more interactive and engaging. Whether you’re working in breakout rooms, collaborating at open tables, or focusing within a classroom, the Centre caters to every learning style.

One of the most unexpected benefits of The Duigan Centre has been the way it fosters connection. The layout and design naturally bring people together. I’ve had more spontaneous conversations with teachers and fellow students here than anywhere else on campus. It’s created a genuine sense of community, where relationships are built not just through academics, but through shared experiences.

BECOMING PART OF THE BGS COMMUNITY

I AM INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL

Accepting an offer of a scholarship to this School has provided me with a unique opportunity to broaden my horizons and become more aware of life’s bigger picture, even beyond school. Now more than ever, I feel the significant influence of the School’s profound culture and the continued support from staff who have assisted and guided me in my development, shaping my views and values. This is something that the very best schools do.

BGS has constantly offered a multitude of pathways, allowing me to discover my own passions. Even now, just beginning my VCE journey, the many different subjects offered by BGS provide me with the opportunity to learn and develop in courses which I enjoy.

Beyond academics, Brighton Grammar also allows students to participate in a plethora of exciting co-curricular activities. Through APS Sport, students can both develop their teamwork skills alongside their fellow Tonners as well as individually shine and excel in their respective interests. My own development with Brighton Grammar’s Golf program has been fantastic. By providing students with opportunities to play in many different tournaments and assisting us with travelling to certain events, BGS has continually been there offering tremendous support. A recent example would be the Victorian Schools Golf Final, hosted at Lonsdale Links Golf Club. Without this opportunity to compete and the companionship of my teammates, we never would have been able to be crowned State Champions.

Sporting aside, Brighton Grammar’s tight knit community and positive culture have inspired me to aim high and be the best version of myself possible. The numerous Outdoor Education programs throughout my years at BGS have facilitated this, allowing me to face new challenges, be confident in my abilities, and grow as a person overall. I am certain that those memories shared with my fellow peers will remain with me for years to come.

I look back nostalgically to when I stepped into the Quad for the first time and although my future remains a bit of an unknown, I still very much feel lucky to be here and enjoy all the experiences that this School provides. I encourage all of you to reflect on what you have been given by BGS so far in your own journey and let us pursue better things.

Meliora Sequamur.

SLIDING DOORS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

OPENING DOORS FOR OPPORTUNITIES

Through the generosity of the Sliding Doors Foundation, we are thrilled that we have offered a Year 10 student the opportunity to join the BGS community in 2026. The Sliding Doors Foundation (SDF) was founded in South Australia and now with a branch in Victoria, its mission is to offer Scholarships to individuals who demonstrate a propensity to constantly strive to do better, display leadership potential and have positive impact in their community.

Our new student will join us at an exciting time at BGS, as our Scholarship program continues to grow and our

students continue to thrive. At BGS we focus on high performance outcomes, building character strength and fostering a nurturing and supportive community. We believe this aligns with SDF’s mission and that this student will have the best opportunity to flourish on their journey to adulthood.

We thank SDF for partnering with Brighton Grammar to open the doors for this student, so they can pursue their chosen pathway and begin their promising future.

AN AFTERNOON OF CRICKET & CAMARADERIE

BGS SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM

One of our key programs that centres around community and impact is our BGS Sponsorship Program. Our program consists of 31 businesses, and these partners join with us yearly at an array of engagement opportunities, including our Business Breakfasts and other School events. This year we decided to showcase our Cricket program and initiated an afternoon for our generous sponsors to don kits sponsored by Ontrack Sportswear and engage in a Big Bash against some of our mixed years BGS Cricket sides.

With Headmaster Ross Featherston as the Coach of the Featherston XI Sponsor Team, they managed an impressive 78 runs off 90 balls, while the BGS First XI Representative Team coached by Luke Walker made an equally impressive 87 runs off 90 balls. With families and friends welcome as cheer squads,

it was a fun way to finish off the year and a reminder of the generosity and support of our community.

Why I give to BGS

What do you value about BGS?

When our boys were little and Phil and I were deciding which school we wanted them to attend, the decisions we made were based on the usual suspects - academics, extracurricular activities and opportunities. What we didn’t appreciate was the incredible community of which our family has become a part. BGS is so much more than just a school - our boys are surrounded by the most incredible role models, and the teaching, parent and past student communities we have come to know over the last 10 years have given us so much more than just an education.

How has your connection to Brighton Grammar School influenced your decision to volunteer your time and support the School’s plan financially?

Early on in the boys’ schooling I took the opportunity to volunteer as part of the Junior Parents’ Group as a way to connect with new people. Over the years I have loved being part of many volunteering opportunities - everything from flipping burgers, fundraising for the Junior School, coordinating our Family Fun Night, helping our Friends of Drama student productions, travelling with and supporting our brilliant Sailing team, being part of the BGS Pink Dinner Committee and raising funds for the Leukemia Foundation, was an absolute highlight. We have always felt it was important to show both of our boys the importance of volunteering and giving back to their community but also to show the boys that we care about their school and fully support the sporting and extracurricular activities they choose and love.

What message would you like to share with other members of the Brighton Grammar School community about the importance of giving - volunteering time and supporting the school financially?

Volunteering and giving for us has always been about fully embracing our community and spending time and energy giving back to a community that has given us so much. By doing our small part we’re making the experience as fantastic for others including future families that come to BGS.

CIRCLE OF GIVING

ROB STEWART AM (OB 1966)

Old Boy Robert 'Rob' Stewart AM, supporting the BGS Scholarship program represents more than just philanthropy - it's a profound way of honouring the transformational impact Brighton Grammar School had on his life during the 1960s.

As the inaugural recipient of the Joe White Scholarship for general excellence, Rob vividly recalls receiving the letter that would alter not only his educational trajectory but also provide crucial support to his family, noting that it was a distinct help to his family financially.

Notably, Rob's selection for BGS Rowing ignited what would become a distinguished lifelong association with the sport. His Rowing career reached international heights when he represented Australia as a member of the 1978 Lightweight Team at the World Rowing Championships. He won two Australian Lightweight Eight titles and later served as President of Melbourne University Boat Club from 1983-1991, one of Australia's premier Rowing institutions.

“The key thing for me about BGS was the importance of performance and teamwork,’’ Rob explains. “The School has always been very good at building that type of culture, and my experience was accentuated by being involved in Rowing - the ultimate team sport.”

Following his time at Brighton Grammar, Rob graduated with honours in Law and Commerce at The University of Melbourne before completing an MBA at Harvard. His impressive career included being appointed National Managing Partner at Minter Ellison in 1981 (serving in this role for 18 years) and Chairman of Melbourne IT in 1999, along with numerous directorships and consulting roles in the legal and technology sectors. He has also served on the Boards of a number of not-forprofit organisations, including the Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute where he was President from 2005 –2012.

In 2012, Rob was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant contributions to community service, particularly in fostering collaboration between business and the tertiary education sector, supporting health and technology organisations, and his dedicated service to Rowing.

After reflecting on his remarkable professional journey, Rob made the decision to support the BGS Scholarship Program, completing a circle of giving.

‘‘Scholarships make a huge difference to someone's ability to attend a great school - they provide tremendous opportunity. Sixty years ago, someone believed in me enough to invest in my future, and once you see the impact that has on your life and all of its benefits, it's wonderful to be able to give back to the community and create a circular process.”

From scholarship recipient to benefactor, the gift of a Brighton Grammar education once provided to Rob has now been passed forward to the next generation of promising young students, ensuring the legacy of opportunity continues.

VISIONARY GIFTS IMPACTING GENERATIONS

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF BGS BOYS

Legacy gifts of every size have shaped Brighton Grammar School’s future in extraordinary ways. Almost a century ago in 1927, the MacGlashan family donated the Tower Clock to BGS in memory of the late Neil and Agnes MacGlashan. This pioneering act of generosity enabled the School to establish the Southern Hemisphere’s first electric clock while also beginning a tradition of giving that continues to transform our School today.

It is remarkable to see what has been achieved through the generous support of previous generations of Old Boys, parents

and friends through gifts in Wills to BGS. Each gift tells a personal story –a meaningful connection that inspired the donor to create a legacy that extends far beyond their lifetime.

We proudly honour our Sequamur Society members whose gifts received this year ensure Brighton Grammar will nurture exceptional young men for generations to come.

Born 28 June 1935; OB 1953; Died 14 January 2025

Rodney ‘Rod’ Fernald, proud great-nephew of Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson, passed away peacefully at age 89 in Lilydale. Born in Geelong, Rod cherished his childhood days spent at the family beach house in Anglesea. When economic circumstances forced a family move to Brighton, Rodney embraced his new surroundings, thriving at Brighton Grammar where he joined the army cadets—an experience that would serve him well when later conscripted to Puckapunyal.

Rod's journey through life was marked by varied professional experiences—from service in the Maritime Navy to office work— and a loving marriage to his wife Joan in 1965. His lifelong attachment to BGS was evident in his enthusiasm for attending reunion lunches and his legacy lives on through the values he embodied: hard work, honesty, and always doing the right thing.

PETER FLEMING

Born 7 October 1937; OB 1955; Died 2 August 2023

A well-loved Brighton community member, Peter is remembered as a great conversationalist who always had time for people. Peter worked in the finance sector following school. He had a true passion for Tennis, attending Wimbledon on his travels to the UK and could regularly be found on the St Andrew’s Tennis Club courts. Peter also loved the arts and never strayed from his life-long devotion to the St Kilda Football Club.

Kindness, community and generosity were values that guided Peter through life. Following his passing, Peter left donations to many charitable organisations as well as BGS…standing testament to his belief in giving back to community and creating positive impact for all. The Learning Lane in The Duigan Centre is named in his honour.

IAN KERR

Born 13 July 1942; OB 1961; Died 7 January 2025

Ian's love for Brighton Grammar School remained unwavering throughout his 82 years, often seen proudly wearing his original School blazer and tie at the local supermarket long after graduation. His formative years at BGS shaped him profoundly as he built an impressive career that took him from P&O shipping lines in Collins Street to becoming a publicist for legends like Marlene Dietrich and Lauren Bacall in London, before returning to Australia as Director of Publicity for Village Roadshow where he represented stars including Mel Gibson, Jack Thomspon and Nicole Kidman.

A true arts lover, Ian's passion for theatre, opera, and cinema filled his home with carefully preserved programs and memorabilia that chronicled a life well lived. Though he worked with Hollywood greats, Ian always maintained that his most fulfilling years were spent with the Ward family at the Dendy Theatre and The Palais. Even in his final days, his infectious spirit remained bright and his support for Brighton Grammar School stayed steadfast until the end.

WELLESLEY EDEN

Born 30 January 1932; OB 1947, Died 30 December 2023

Wellesley ‘Wells’ was a horticultural consultant and nursery valuer from 1983 to 2001, acting for various government departments, councils and private enterprise businesses. His family owned and managed wholesale and retail nursery businesses in Mentone and at Baxter, Victoria, operating as Charman Road Nurseries Pty Ltd.

Wells expressed that his gift honoured the education, skills and personal development with which BGS equipped him to take his place in the community. ‘It is a small way that I can show my appreciation of the excellent facilities and teaching that the School provides to boys’. An active member of the Nurserymen’s Association of Victoria and the Federation of Australian Nurserymen, Wells was honoured with The Australian Nurseryman of the Year Award 1972, for services to the industry.

SUPPORT COMES IN MANY FORMS

PARTNERSHIPS THAT BENEFIT US ALL

Brighton Grammar’s strong philanthropic community members are quick to support areas of growth and causes close to their hearts.

This year, through the partnership with Australian Sports Foundation, we have been able to see the following projects and opportunities funded by our generous community.

Through a number of caring members in our community, we honoured the memory of Graham Hemingway with new Mitchell and Crowther Oval seating, all of which were supported by Graham’s loving friends and family.

The STEM Racing teams, as part of their requirements of the program, sought support

to afford them the opportunity to compete in the competitive competitions both nationally and internationally. Families were eager to support after the teams’ great success in 2024 and ultimately, one team became World Champions in October!

Our Rowing program is a curriculum stream that many past and current families have an avid connection with. Through this connection our Meliora Club Future Fund continues to receive support for a secure future, in their words, hopefully setting us apart from other clubs.

FROM THE CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

A SNAPSHOT OF OUR PROGRESS

I’m pleased to share some recent improvements at BGS and provide a glimpse into upcoming minor and capital projects for 2026 and beyond.

The Duigan Centre officially opened early in 2025 following a 24-month build and a successful $10M fundraising campaign. Sincere thanks to all project partners and supporters.

The Creativity Hub, funded by families from the 2023 Family Fun Night, is now underway within the Wellbeing Centre at the Urwin Centre site. It will serve as a dedicated space for Dance, Music, Drama, and Mindfulness, reinforcing our strategic focus on creativity and its link to high performance.

Additional enhancements completed this year include several strategic, non-donor-funded capital projects:

• A new surfaced 3x3 Basketball Outdoor Court at the Secondary School

• Finalisation of the ELC playground upgrade

• Upgrades to the Fairweather building, including accessibility and structural improvements

Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce a new sport and events facility submitted for development on the Junior School site. This project, funded through both donations and capital works, will expand our APS and indoor sports offerings. More details will be shared in 2026.

Recognising our donors in 2025

Thank you to all our donors. You make a significant difference to what we can achieve at BGS. Whether contributing to scholarships, buildings or other programs, your support shapes and enhances the educational opportunities for our current and future boys.
