Brendan Cole hit the spotlight in the UK as the hugely talented lovable rogue from BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. Now he returns to the live arena in the company of his sensational 14-piece band and a scorching line-up of fellow former Strictly pros (including his own brother Scott Cole). With a host of classic dance moves – from the sensual rumba to the elegant foxtrot; from the red hot salsa to the dynamic pasa doble – all played out to a live soundtrack of classics by Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Jennifer Lopez et al – it’s show time Strictly style: live, explosive and up-close-and-personal!

This annual evening of classic ballroom dance is a firm favourite for star-crossed lovers (or just good friends!) of all ages and genders. With live music courtesy of the 10-piece Berkeley Square Society Band, evoking the golden age of the foxtrot, quickstep and cha-cha-cha, you’ll be dancing till you drop. Or simply sit back, enjoy the music and soak up the elegant ambience of the historic Corn Exchange.

Here, with a glittering cast that includes singer Lance Ellington, guest dancers and full orchestra (conducted by Richard Balcombe), they present a live dance and music spectacular played out to the timeless classics of Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin et al.

Following on from their debut tour 4 Men:Move, Christopher Reynolds pays homage to the company’s style of exciting floor work infused with the creation of a dynamic vocabulary.

Turning 20 - Anniversary Programme

Britain’s acclaimed company of disabled and non-disabled dancers travels to the past, present and future in celebration of 20 years of bold and unexpected dance works.

Take the urban street-dance style ‘electro’ - a dazzling mix of breaking, disco, vogue, popping and locking - straight from the suburbs of Paris. Mix in some physical theatre, contemporary dance and a blistering soundtrack of techno, electro house, Afrobeat and classical music. Add an all-male cast of eight exceptional young electro dancers. Then, tell the story of their lives - their everyday hopes, fears, friendships and rivalries - played out across a typical day at college.

From 1983, comes the restaging project, Set and Reset/Reset by Trisha Brown Dance Company.

Using the original concept from her playful choreography, Laurie Anderson’s contagious score and Robert Rauschenberg’s beautiful designs, Candoco adds its unique signature to this timeless classic. Confronting the present is French choreographer Rachid Ouramdane in an atmospheric, visually striking new company work that reveals private portraits of the dancers.

Rounding off the programme is Matthias Sperling’s light-hearted, quirky solo, an intimate encounter with one of Candoco’s dancers that anticipates what the future might hold.

The result is the fastest, funniest, most colourful and anarchic live street-dance show you’ll ever experience!

Created by Spanish choreographer, director, dancer and actor Blanca Li with original music by Tao Gutierrez.

Building on the company’s rich and diverse experience, these three works herald the next 20 years of innovative and exploratory dance-making.

The Floating Palace

featuring Robyn Hitchcock, Martin Carthy, Abigail Washburn, KT Tunstall, Eliza Carthy and Howe Gelb Singer-songwriter, guitarist and renowned English eccentric Robyn Hitchcock curates this intimate evening of free-wheeling musical collaboration.

It’s a simple concept: musicians admire each other, are a little envious of each other, and, given the chance, like to play together. But normally they only manage this in the studio, or after hours. Until now! Here, a carousel of exceptional ‘roots’ artists - all lit within by their passion for music - come together to perform live, accompanying each other on songs they know and songs they’ve only just met.

Robyn Hitchcock is joined by award-winning Scottish songstress KT Tunstall, folk legends Martin and Eliza Carthy, banjo chanteuse Abigail Washburn and alt-country experimentalist Howe Gelb (of Giant Sand fame).

February’s line-up is under wraps for now, but March sees Man Ray Sky grace our stage and Monsters Build Mean Robots close the season in April.

As an added extra this April, we are showcasing a fine selection of young bands as part of the city’s annual Youth Arts Festival on Sat 28 April.

Brighton Dome’s seasonal showcase of live African music and dance wakes up spring with a taste of Kinshasa summer sunshine.

Named after a remote rainforest region and a nomadic native tribe, Kasai Masai bring an essential urban twist to the ancestral sounds of the Congo. Led by percussionist, singer and dancer Nickens Nkoso (Papa Wemba, Mose Fan Fan, Kanda Bongoman), and featuring a blistering backline (including djembe, sax and two female dancers), this globetrotting band has performed across the world from WOMAD to the Africa Cup of Nations. With regular African Night Fever DJs in the mix, this is a joyous celebration of the rich and varied cultures of a continent.

As his first ever UK show outside London, Ben L’Oncle offers a wild celebration of everything that’s thrilling about the classic soul revues.

He grew up listening to Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin, and combines Kanye West-style R&B, Motown groove and Stax horns with a great, way-over-the-top live show. He’s become an arena artist in France, and after he sang his soul version of White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army on Later with Jools Holland, he played London Jazz Festival to a packed, ecstatic audience.

This annual tour, brought to you by the UK’s leading music magazine, showcases the year’s most exciting emerging music talent. This exclusive platform is renowned for giving the freshest new acts their first taste of national notoriety – past alumni include Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, Florence & The Machine, Crystal Castles and The Vaccines.

The line-up for 2012 – including Bangor’s indie-electro outfit Two Door Cinema Club, Devon’s electro-pop revivalists Metronomy, Camden post-grunge crew Tribes and young New York rap sensation Azealia Banks captures the spirit of the year just gone and sets the agenda for an equally explosive forthcoming twelve months.

‘Simply astounding.’ The Times Back in the UK for the first time in three years, the influential American folk singer rounds off her 2012 tour right here at Brighton Dome.

From her debut at the Newport Folk Festival in 1959 to her appearance alongside Nelson Mandela at his 90th birthday celebrations, Joan Baez has been at the forefront of American music and political activism for over 50 years. Throughout that time she has remained a musical force of nature, releasing some 25 studio albums and immortalising the songs of such enduring artists as Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson and Steve Earle.

British cellist and singer Ayanna was the first non-American to win the legendary Amateur night Live at the Harlem Apollo Theatre and this year she has toured with Natty and recorded with Kronos Quartet. With her extraordinary vocals, skipping and swinging over intimate, honey-sweet cello, ‘she has to be heard to be believed.’ (Time Out).

Here is the very height of touching, heartrending romance from the composer who arguably did both those qualities better than any other. There’s a reason Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto is his most popular: it’s his most rapturous, his most readily moving and his most sweepingly emotive.

There’s also a reason his Second Symphony is played more than any other of its companions.

Here thick, rich textures and sombre harmonies wrap themselves around Rachmaninoff’s finely contoured melodies, the music smouldering, flaring up and eventually propelling itself towards a whirling, spirited climax. Surrender to the alluring warmth and beauty of Rachmaninoff.

Vaughan Williams’s lark soars skywards - spiralling, floating and propelling its way towards the firmament with a sense of aspiration and discovery: a lone creature set against the expanse of the skies; a single violin countering the weight of the orchestra. When he saw a flock of sixteen swans taking flight over his Järvenpää villa, Sibelius knew he’d glimpsed the blazing light of optimism amid a sea of dark depression. He thrust the swans’ sure but graceful ascent into the final movement of his Fifth Symphony, which itself soars optimistically upwards, free from its creator’s earthly concerns.

Fate. It has hung dagger-like over the art of music since Beethoven seized it by the throat. In 1877, Tchaikovsky felt its weighty hand on his shoulder.

His artistic response was a Symphony unlike anything he’d created before: ‘This is fate’, he revealed to his confidante Nadezhda von Meck, explaining the opening notes of his heart-on-sleeve Fourth Symphony. But by the Symphony’s final chapter, Tchaikovsky’s darkness had turned to light.

‘Rejoice in others’ rejoicing’, he urged Nadezhda, and the Symphony veered towards the sort of unstoppable, ebullient confidence and joy that Beethoven captured so gloriously in his First Piano Concerto.

E minor Op.44 No.2 Winners of the 2008 Outstanding Young Artist Award at the MIDEM Classique Awards in Cannes, the Navarra Quartet was selected for representation by YCAT in 2006 and a year later received the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship, culminating in a highly acclaimed disc of Haydn’s Seven Last Words. Last year the Quartet recorded its first CD, of Peteris Vasks’ quartets, and took part in the BBC Proms chamber music series at Cadogan Hall with pianist Francesco Piemontesi.

Perhaps the best known work is Poulenc’s Trio, a light and witty piece which imitates the French Baroque style with an emphasis on clarity, balance and simplicity.

It marked a watershed in the history of chamber music repertoire when first performed due to its broad emotional range and abundance of passion. The new work in this concert (co-commissioned by Britten Sinfonia and Wigmore Hall) is written by Luke Bedford, resident composer at the latter. Luke studied at the Royal College of Music and his work is full of brooding intensity in which every note counts with maximum purpose.

Such is the reputation of the Endellion that its thirtieth anniversary celebrations (2009) spawned a series of major new projects. These included the release of a boxed set of the complete Beethoven string quartets; new commissions for poets Wendy Cope (with Roxana Panufnik) and Andrew Motion (setting new text to Haydn’s Seven Last Words); and involvement in Phill Grabsky’s film In Search of Beethoven. Wherever the Quartet performs, it ‘sets the audience ablaze’ (Daily Telegraph) and ‘captivates concertgoers with a remarkable rapport.’ (Guardian).

Subtly but distinctively charismatic, the Berlin-based Kuss Quartet is firmly established in the elite of the world’s string quartets, marked out by its readiness to experiment, not only with its engagement in early and new music, but with its interpretations of the standard quartet repertoire.

The breadth of the Quartet’s reach is exemplified in its Sony BMG CD release Bridges, which, creating connections across the centuries, juxtaposes transcriptions of Renaissance masters with contemporary innovators.

The BSO continues its Brighton Dome residency with a concert of grand statements and rapturous energy. Leonore No.3 is arguably the greatest and certainly the most potent of the four overtures Beethoven wrote for his epic opera , Fidelio. Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini embodies his late style at its brilliant best, with wit, invention and irresistible melodies.

This concert of northern festivities opens gently with Mendelssohn’s descriptive overture on a calm day by the sea, followed by Grieg’s Piano Concerto, which owes its popularity to its pianistic bravura and lyrical melodies based on Norwegian folk tunes. Sibelius flies the flag for Scandinavia in his solemn declaration of love for his Finally, Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony - written under homeland. Then, it’s further north still with Tchaikovsky’s pressure from the brutal Stalinist state might have appeased the take on the greatest love story of all. Finally, Grieg takes the authorities, but beneath its surface grandeur and undeniable reins once more, with tales of Norwegian national hero beauty, the composer’s steely disdain shone through.

Benjamin Britten was president of Brighton Philharmonic from 1958 to 1966. Here the orchestra anticipates the composer’s centenary in 2013 with a concert presenting various aspects of his genius.

First, as a composer, with Four Sea Interludes from the opera Peter Grimes. Then, as a performer and viola player, with his favourite concerto K364. His arranging and pragmatic musicianship come to the fore in the Rossini adaptations; and his contribution to the early music movement and to music education are celebrated in the Young Person’s Guide. The concert also showcases two talented members of the Yehudi Menuhin School, who join the orchestra in Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante.

In a programme that pays tribute to the BPO’s connections with the Royal Opera House, Vasko Vassilev, concertmaster at the ROH, joins the orchestra for two virtuosic showpieces for violin by the Spanish-born composer Pablo de Sarasate.

The concert also features one of the best known operatic overtures, plus music from the ballet Pineapple Poll, based on a quick romp around Arthur Sullivan’s music for HMS Pinafore, Cox and Box and Overture di ballo, as arranged and adapted by the late, great Charles Mackerras.

Chabrier Espana Rodrigo Concierto del Aranjuez Bizet Orchestral Suite from Carmen Debussy Petite Suite Nigel Westlake Shadow Dances for Guitar Rimsky Korsakov Capriccio Espagnol This programme celebrates Spain – the glorious sunshine, and the music it has inspired in composers both indigenous and foreign to its lands. There’s the alborado, the fandango and flamenco songs as interpreted by a Russian. There’s Spanish popular airs as heard through the ears of a Frenchman. And the fragrances and evocative sounds of nature from a Spaniard who, though a pianist, seems to capture the very soul of the guitar in his music. Craig Ogden, one of the world’s leading guitarists, completes the programme with a work from his native Australia.

Musical portraits of England and Hungary feature in this evocative programme. Arnold Bax was a great supporter of and attender at BPO concerts in the 1930s; his powerful work, Tintagel, conjures the stormy Atlantic seas and rugged cliffs of Cornwall.

Norfolk Rhapsody– a BPO Audience Choice – is just one of the many works Vaughan Williams was inspired to write after his exploration and collection of native regional folk song in England. The Elgar Cello Concerto is one of the most famous and moving works in the repertoire and was written in deepest Sussex. The concert closes with Dvo ř ák’s dance-like Eighth Symphony.

With soloist John Lill in a sensuous final concert of the season, the BPO explores the sleepy afternoon musings of a faun; tackles one of the most physically demanding of piano concertos; and presents the exciting and passionate love token of a smitten composer for his beloved. Our soloist is one of Brighton’s favourites, the orchestra’s current president and eminent pianist, John Lill.

Waltz back in time to the glittering ballrooms of 19th Century Vienna with an enchanting mix of music, song and dance from the Strauss Family and Friends.

David Juritz directs from the violin in the traditional Viennese manner and the Johann Strauss Orchestra is joined by the Johann Strauss Dancers in glorious period costume.

This new show for 2012 welcomes classics such as the Tritsch Tratsch Polka, Blue Danube Waltz, Thunder and Lightning Polka, Pizzicato Polka and more…

An uplifting and beautiful new piece of puppetry for anyone who has ever felt sad but now feels a bit better.

Meet Granddad, eccentric traveller and storyteller extraordinaire. Enter his battered Bedouin tent to hear intrepid tales of courageous deed and valiant adventure in both real and imaginary worlds.

Ivan Rose is six years old. Shut away in his little house in the city watched by his aging tutor, he fantasises about the outside world. His father, Sam, spends most of his time away, and Ivan can only imagine he is off fighting dragons and generally being a hero!

Based on a story by Hal Chambers about how a father and his son become embroiled in an epic quest that will bring them face to face with love, memory and hope.

This exciting puppetry-based production for families and the young has been created by the team behind the hit show Tim and Light.

The latest raucous reinvention of the panto tradition sees Aladdin get an X-rated makeover. Expect the usual cast of drag queens, wild costumes and very adult humour. Formerly stand-up’s youthful iconoclast, Lee now gawps blankly at News 24 as Britain burns down around him, and blinks weirdly at the vast wayside retail outlets during endless journeys to and from increasingly indistinct provincial theatres. For 2012, Artist Director Tristan Sharps marries the worlds of art installation and theatre in a site specific deconstruction of Hamlet.

01273 709709 | brightondome.org Tenth Anniversary Celebrations Dark Side Of The Moon Ten years ago Brighton Dome re-opened its doors after a £20 million rebuilding and refurbishment programme, transforming its three spaces into a major international centre for live arts and entertainment.

Join us for a glass of bubbly– there’ll be Dome Discovery Tours free for Brighton residents – offering a rare glimpse behind-the-scenes – alongside our Saturday lunchtime music in the Brighton Dome Foyer – you can also see our Resident Chamber Orchestra Britten Sinfonia on that day at 12noon (see page 13) and celebrate the south coast’s premier arts venue!

Foyer of FUN! Now open during the day, our spacious, sunlit foyer bar is the perfect place to catch up with friends, study, hold informal meetings or work quietly with free wifi. It is also a great family friendly space, ideal for relaxing on comfy sofas with a cuppa or some locally sourced food, while the children entertain themselves with the selection of books and toys.

A Photographic Exhibition Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Pink Floyds first performance of this seminal album, which took place on 20th January 1972 at the Brighton Dome.
