Summer Task: Become a News Detective

Choose one newspaper or magazine article on any topic that genuinely interests you (sport, technology, travel, science, crime, entertainment, world news etc.). It can be from a printed newspaper or a reputable news website.

On the article, annotate:

Presentation

• Circle the headline.

• Label the subheading/strapline.

• Label any images and captions.

• Find the opening paragraph (the lead).

Structure

Highlight where the writer:

• introduces the topic

• gives background information

• includes facts or statistics

• includes quotations

• explains causes or consequences

• ends the article.

Language

Find examples of:

• emotive language

• facts

• opinions

• rhetorical questions (if any)

• direct quotations

• powerful verbs

• interesting adjectives.

Finally...

Write one paragraph answering:

How does the writer make this article interesting for the reader?
