2012 Annual Report

A playful laugh, a game of toss, a request to go “higher” and smiles.

The sights and the sounds of the playground at Brighton Center can change your outlook in a second. It’s hard not to smile when you hear kids giggling as they play a game of tag or when you see two friends hugging with joy. It’s an innocence and joy of life on that playground that we try to capture at Brighton, because ultimately isn’t the whole world really our playground? Ask any school-aged child what their favorite part of the day is and I guarantee that they will shout a resounding, “recess”. Have you ever stopped to wonder why? There is a sense of freedom on a playground where kids are allowed to enjoy life in a unique and playful way. That’s exactly what we do at Brighton, allow kids to be who they are and share their gifts with us each and every day!

We got dizzy spinning on the merry go round of the last legislative session and took at $1M hit to our early childhood intervention program, but we found a way to regain our balance and actually make up that cut with new program income. This allowed us to make sure we can still give kids with disabilities a big push to swing into a brighter future. We were also able to keep our wheels turning through our special events and raised more than $500,000 thanks to the support of our community. Although our climb may be tough at times in today’s economy it’s the spirit of playfulness and the joy of the children that we work with that gets us to the top of that slide. The playground here at Brighton represents more than just a physical space, its a spirit that lives in the hearts of our staff, families, and donors.

www.brightonsa.org They say, “Money makes the world go round” and that’s certainly true, but at Brighton we think it’s that sense of playground that keeps us going. What happens here can’t be measured in dollars. You can’t put a price on seeing a child take their first uncertain steps when no one thought they could. You can’t put a price on hearing a small, little voice utter that first word, or see the relief in a parent’s eyes when they realize it’s going to be okay. At Brighton, the sights and sounds of joy and happiness fill the air and we have the opportunity to be a part of those special moments and successes of the children with disabilities we serve. There is no greater privilege than to share in those moments with them and their families and see the pride on their faces when they realize that no matter what anyone says, they CAN! We couldn’t witness those moments without you and your support, and so from the bottom of our hearts we thank you for helping kids with disabilities do things that others said they couldn’t. Because of you, all kids can go out into their playground of life and show the world the joy and the gifts they have to share!

Pitter patter, pitter patter. These are common sounds that can be heard from almost every child care center throughout San Antonio. No one would think twice about it. No one would pay it any special attention. No one would really care. Unless these sounds come from a child with a disability. Unless this child was significantly delayed in their motor skills. Unless you are at the Brighton Center. After only 6 weeks of being enrolled at Bright Beginnings Child Care Center and surrounded by other children her age with and without disabilities, then 2 ½ year old Brooklyn, ditched her walker and began taking steps on her own. Your support of Brighton made sure Brooklyn was included in a setting where she gained mobility, a sense of independence, and most importantly, a place that encourages her to reach her potential.

Born with severe internal complications and a right leg that had no functionality, Izzy’s parents were told from day one that his quality of life would be low and that the odds were infinitely stacked against him.

As first time parents with no idea what to do or where to turn, they fell into a world of complete despair.

Enter Brighton Center’s Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) program where a team including an intervention specialist, physical therapist and a speech therapist became part of Izzy’s family. After 2 years of services and one amputation later, Izzy talks, runs and plays just like any other toddler. Your support of Brighton not only provided much needed therapy to Izzy but gave him the skills to beat the odds; proving there are no limits to what he can do.

Picture John. His wife is awaiting criminal trial while his newborn daughter is on life support in ICU. A situation no one ever expects to encounter, but after his wife suffered from post-partum depression and acted out aggressively towards their baby girl, it was a situation he couldn’t escape. John found himself drowning with the reality that if his daughter pulled through, she would suffer numerous mental and physical disabilities.

Enter Brighton Center’s Precious Minds, New Connections Parenting Program. Your support of Brighton allowed us to offer free parent training classes to John and give him the knowledge, skills and resources he would need for this unforeseen chapter in his life. John now has the tools needed to emerge from the depths of the unknown and into a future where hope can now reside.

A Hopeful Future Made possible by you!

Caught off guard by an emergency c-section, and a new born baby girl with a diagnosis of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, Jacqueline and her husband were met with an overwhelming sense of hopelessness. What now? How would they adjust to this new world they had been thrust into? How could they make sure their new baby Vivian had all of her current and future needs met? As Jacqueline met Brighton Center’s ECI staff at her front door she began to cry as the cloud of doubt, uncertainty and lonesomeness started to lift. Hope began to emerge. “Vivi’s Team” (an affectionate term Jacqueline used to describe Brighton staff), not only provided therapy services directly to Vivian but also taught her family how to continue these therapies in between visits. Soon Vivian was eating solid foods, holding her bottle, playing hide & seek and even waving, all milestones that would have been impossible without intense and consistent therapy. By being a Brighton supporter you helped Vivian and her family receive the services they needed to lay a foundation for a healthy and hope-filled future.

Full Swing Ahead As we launch into another year, Brighton has big goals. Whether it is achieving accreditation through the National Association of Young Children, opening a second child care center, or working to reach more children with disabilities and their families, swings in our services require a big push from you.
