In UK, employers have a legal responsibility to safeguard the safety of their staff at the workplaces. Keeping this in mind, one of the government’s regulations is that all businesses and organisations must follow The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

1. Number of employees – Having the number of first-aiders in any business or organisation will depend on how many employees you’ve got. However, as per HSE’s guidelines regarding the first aid legislation, there is no specific rule about how many first-aiders you should have. It all depends on how many employees you have and what their job roles.

For Low hazard workplaces, with up to 25 employees: at least one ‘appointed person’ is required to take the charge of first aid equipment and facilities.

With up to 25 to 50 employees: at least one first-aider trained in EFAW (emergency first aid at work) and for 51+ employees: a minimum of one first-aider trained in FAW (first aid at work) per 100 employees.

2. Number of sites managed by your business - Another factor that need to be considered when determining your first-aider training costs is the number of sites you have got. If you have two or more locations, you will likely need to have several staff members trained.

Low hazard workplaces, mostly require an EFAW first-aider, whereas higher hazard sites will demand FAW first-aiders.

FAW first-aiders may also be required in low hazard sites where employees have underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, heart problems, and epilepsy.
