“Ação!” foi a palavra de ordem ouvida antes de cada take da série norte-americana “A Bíblia”, que apresentou ao mundo o nosso entrevistado, o ator Diogo Morgado. Com Hollywood a seus pés, quisemos saber por que razão o nosso “hot Jesus” continua a querer viver em Portugal.

Perdidamente apaixonados pelo país, são também Carlos do Carmo, nome consagrado do Fado, e a estilista Katty Xiomara, que aqui nos deixam as suas sugestões de visita.

With the enthusiasm and vibrancy that is characteristic of our magazine, we have updated you on the new store openings, as well as offering you tasty meal suggestions, which you can enjoy at our restaurants prior to boarding your flight. And because we want you to take in your bag more than a good memory of Portugal, we have suggested two typical Portuguese recipes, made using 100% national ingredients, which you can purchase from our airports stores.

And to accompany these delicious suggestions, view our selection of some of the best Portuguese wines on offer.

As you flick through the magazine, get to know the advantages of parking in our official airport car parks. There are different means of parking, ranging from low cost to Premium services. Find out more about reserving a parking space almost next to the plane. And should you require a car for your travels, you’re better off choosing rent-a-car operators licensed

by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal. This guarantee will make a world of difference. Quite different, undoubtedly, was the venue chosen for our fashion shoot. Livening went backstage at Lisbon Airport, showing that not only planes take to the runway.

“Action!” was the operating word heard before every take of the US show “The Bible”, which introduced our interviewee, actor Diogo Morgado, to the world. With Hollywood at his feet we wanted to know why our “hot Jesus” still wants to live in Portugal.

Carlos do Carmo, a renowned name in Fado and fashion designer Katty Xiomara are also madly in love with our country and they have given us their tips on what to visit.

Lisbon Airport’s Terminal 2 has more shopping to offer now.

There is no longer any excuse for not boarding in style, now that a shop belonging to the Portuguese fashion brand Parfois and an Ale Hop store have been added to the terminal list of shopping possibilities. Recently opened, that Parfois store showcases the main trends in fashion accessories in a 61 sq. m space. The fine art of taking risks Uma das coisas mais difíceis de se conseguir é ter um estilo original sem cairmos em excessos.

A vontade de arriscar e de inovar até pode ser muita, mas convém não esquecer duas pequenas dicas. Por um lado, evitar o perigo de transformarmos um look, que achamos único, em algo apenas esquisito e folclórico. Por outro lado, o facto de vivermos num país que, embora cada vez mais aberto a devaneios estilísticos, ainda olha um bocadinho de lado para quem ousa ousar, seja em que âmbito for.

Posto isto, onde é que fica espaço para a nossa excentricidade? No bom senso, no meio termo. Há uma linha que separa a boa dose de excentricidade, daquele tipo de excentricidade que faz parar o trânsito e deixa todos boquiabertos, pelos piores motivos.

Secondly, bear in mind that I live in a country which, whilst being more and more open to stylistic digressions, still frowns upon those who dare to stand out, in any field. So, where do we find the room for our own eccentricity? In our own good sense.

In the middle way. There is a line that separates good measure from eccentricity – the type of eccentricity that stops traffic and leaves everyone looking gobsmacked, for all the wrong reasons.

Pode ser aquele colar grande e vistoso que nunca se imaginou a usar, podem ser uns collants diferentes dos pretos opacos que usa o inverno inteiro, uns sapatos de uma cor que nunca lhe passou pela cabeça, uma carteira mini ou maxi, um simples chapéu... enfim, o céu é o limite.

Importante, importante, importante é que nunca se esqueça de si, da sua personalidade, da imagem que quer transmitir. Não vale a pena fingir que adora um estilo dramático se, lá no fundo, é uma clássica a vestir. E o oposto a mesma coisa. Pode, e deve, brincar com a roupa, divertir-se com aquilo que veste (quando a coisa se torna séria e uma obrigação perde a graça toda), mas não se descontrole no meio disso tudo. Lembre-se: bom senso são as palavras de ordem!

Queremos que olhem para nós e reconheçam a capacidade de arriscar da forma certa, não queremos que olhem para nós e pensem que fomos atacados por um qualquer espírito maligno, que nos fez pôr no corpo, peças escolhidas às escuras e combinadas ao calhas. E isso... isso é difícil.

Há quem o faça de forma inata. Não faltam exemplos de pessoas que parecem escolher a roupa segundo o infalível método do “um-dó-li-tá” e, no entanto, a coisa resulta. Estão sempre absolutamente deslumbrantes, parecem estar sempre maravilhosas e sem qualquer esforço, do género “não tenho culpa, visto a primeira coisinha que me aparece à frente e, mesmo assim, fico de cair para o lado”. Não se deixem enganar. Às vezes é mesmo assim, qualquer coisa lhes assenta e as transforma em rainhas do estilo (olhe-se para uma Kate Moss, por exemplo), mas outras vezes há algum esforço e algum trabalho envolvidos, por mais descontraído e casual que o look pareça. Mas enfim. Se não é uma destas pessoas abençoadas com o dom da casualidade na hora de vestir mas se, ainda assim, gostava de apimentar um bocadinho as coisas, há alguns passos simples que pode seguir.

We want people to look at us and recognise our capacity to take risks in the right way, we don’t want them to look at us and think we are under the control of some evil spirit that makes us wear things that seem to have been picked out in the dark and combined at random.

And that… well, that’s difficult to achieve. Some people seem to have a natural gift for looking good. There is no shortage of people who are able to pick out their clothes using the infallible “eeny, meeny, miny, moe” method – and it works perfectly. These lucky few always look fabulous, with an always fantastic and effortless outfit that seems to say “It’s not my fault, I just put on the first thing I grabbed and still look drop dead gorgeous”. But don’t be fooled. Whilst in some cases it is really true – everything fits them perfectly and transforms them into style queens (just look at Kate Moss, to name one example) – but some other times, there is a considerable effort and work involved, no matter how relaxed and casual the look may appear.

But if you’re one of those people for whom looking perfectly turns out right every time, it doesn’t come easy and if you still would like to spice things up a bit, there are a few simple steps you can follow.

I would advise you to not to start mixing patterns, one of the riskiest trends this season. Or, combining half a dozen colours in just one look. Or, bleaching your hair. There are simpler ways of adding a touch of individuality to our lives. I’m a believer in baby steps, doing things gradually. For example, start with a statement piece. That may be a large, showy necklace that you never thought you would wear, or tights in a different shade to the opaque black ones you normally use all winter, or shoes in a colour you had never considered before, a tiny clutch or a huge handbag, a simple hat… the choices are endless here. The important thing is that you never lose sight of yourself, your personality, the image that you want to transmit. There is no point in pretending that you love a dramatic style when, deep down, your tastes in clothes are more classic. The same goes for the other way round. You can, and should, play with clothes and have fun with what you wear (when things get all serious and become an obligation, they lose their attraction) – but just don’t get carried away.

Remember: good sense is the order of the day!

A alma da guitarra portuguesa Hugo Vasco Reis estreou-se a solo com o trabalho “Poema Anacrónico”. O guitarrista e compositor apresentou o novo álbum no Aeroporto de Lisboa, dando a conhecer a alma da guitarra portuguesa. Com referência a sonoridades do século XX, o músico cria um vasto conjunto de harmonias recorrendo ao uso de acordes dissonantes e atonais, mudanças de ritmo, tempo e tema. “Poema Anacrónico” divide-se em três partes, a guitarra portuguesa a solo, guitarra portuguesa e piano e, por fim, a transição de obras de Carlos Seixas para instrumentos de teclas, adaptadas para a guitarra portuguesa e a viola de gamba.

The soul of the Portuguese guitar Hugo Vasco Reis has just released his first solo album, “Poema Anacrónico”. The guitarist and composer presented his new record at Lisbon Airport, introducing the soul of the Portuguese guitar. Referencing sounds from the 20th century, the musician creates a wide range of harmonies using dissonant and atonal chords and changes of rhythm, time and themes. “Poema Anacrónico” is divided into three parts – solo Portuguese guitar, Portuguese guitar and piano and the works of Carlos Seixas written for keyboard instruments and now adapted to the Portuguese guitar and viola de gamba.

MÚSICA MUSIC As 3 Marias convidam a entrar a bordo As 3 Marias convidaram os passageiros dos Aeroportos de Lisboa e Porto a “entrarem a bordo” para conhecerem o mais recente álbum do grupo, “Bipolar”.

Cristina Bacelar (voz e guitarra), Fátima Santos (acordeão) e Ianina Khmelik (violino), são as “Marias” deste conjunto musical que tem como principal influência o tango.

O grupo nasceu na cidade do Porto em 2008 e este é o segundo álbum que lançam. Conta com diversos temas originais e uma interpretação de “Libertango” de Astor Piazzolla. As 3 Marias apresentam um tango de fusão tocado e cantado, principalmente em português, com sons tradicionais da cultura musical portuguesa.

Cristina Bacelar (vocals and guitar), Fátima Santos (accordion) and Lanina Khmelik (violin) are the three “Marias” in this group, whose main musical influence is the tango. The group got together in Porto in 2008 and this is their second album. It features a number of original songs and their version of Astor Piazzolla’s “Libertango”.

The 3 Marias musical style can be described as a fusion of tango – instrumentals and songs with lyrics, mostly in Portuguese – and traditional Portuguese sounds.

O Wonder Room instalou-se e apresentou as principais propostas dos estilistas portugueses, uma iniciativa promovida em parceria com a Associação Moda Lisboa.

O Aeroporto do Porto também não foi alheio às novas tendências e foi palco de desfiles performativos, fóruns de novos talentos e um concurso de novos criadores. O

s holofotes da fama incidiram sobre ele quando protagonizou Jesus Cristo na série norte-americana “A Bíblia”, em 2013. Mas este não foi o primeiro passo de Diogo Morgado numa carreira internacional como ator. Muito pelo contrário. Há já oito anos que empresta o talento a produções internacionais, primeiro no Brasil, com “A Selva”, mais tarde em Espanha, onde rodou três filmes. Tudo enquanto em Portugal se consolidava como nome na sétima arte e na televisão.

A verdade, porém, é que Jesus foi o papel que lhe abriu novos horizontes. Um papel a que deu um toque muito pessoal e que lhe valeria um epíteto que haveria de se tornar quase viral em páginas de jornais, programas televisivos e redes sociais. Apesar de ter sido Oprah, a apresentadora norte-americana que dispensa apresentações, que fez eco deste Diogo “hot Jesus”, tudo começou muito antes. “Eu não entrava nos primeiros episódios e, numa série com 110 milhões de espetadores, a pergunta que se impunha era ‘quem vai fazer de Jesus’”, recorda. Curiosos, os espetadores americanos pesquisaram no Google: “Aparecia um tipo que não tinha túnica nem espinhos – eu. Não podiam dizer se eu representava bem ou não, pelo que apenas comentaram a aparência. Só quando a minha personagem entrou na série, é que começaram a valorizar mais o meu trabalho e as opções que fiz”. Apesar de rejeitar rótulos, não se sente incomodado por lhe chamarem “hot Jesus”.

“A Bíblia” vai entretanto passar para o grande ecrã, mas, enquanto a estreia não acontece, Diogo Morgado continua em cena na indústria norte-americana, com participações na série televisiva “Revenge”, da Fox. Apesar da exposição pública, não se deixa ir na onda da fama. Diz que, como pessoa, nada mudou. Profissionalmente, claro, muito mudou: alargaram-se as perspetivas, passou a planear o seu trabalho tendo em conta que há mais mercados no horizonte, e passou a gerir a vida entre dois países. Tirando isso, garante que não há grandes diferenças: “Era reconhecido nas ruas de Lisboa e agora, às vezes, sou reconhecido nas de Los Angeles. As pessoas são simpáticas, mas não é uma histeria, como quando veem um Alec Baldwin ou um Tom Hanks…”.

Não eram estes palcos que Diogo imaginava pisar quando era pequeno. Os primeiros passos no mundo artístico deu-os aos 15 anos – teatro infantil, teatro, apresentação de programas, musicais… foi assim que preencheu os seis anos seguintes, até que aos 21 pensou que estava na altura de escolher um caminho a sério. “Andei um mês indeciso. Queria entrar na faculdade, mas percebi que era tarde demais. Que tudo o que podia vir a fazer tinha que ver com escrever, realizar, contar histórias”, recorda. Foi a razão a dar o empurrão que faltava à vocação. “Aconteceu assim e ainda bem que aconteceu”.

Aos 32 anos, continua a ir buscar inspiração a dois dos seus atores preferidos de sempre – Armando Cortez e Nicolau Breyner. Ambos o motivam pela forma de estar na profissão mas também pela forma de estar na vida.

The fame spotlight focused on him when he starred as Jesus Christ in the American mini-series “The Bible” in 2013. But this was not Diogo Morgado’s first step of his international career as an actor. Quite the contrary. As far back as eight years ago he lent his talent to international productions, first in Brazil, with “The Jungle” and then in Spain where he made three films. And all whilst in Portugal he was establishing himself as a name in the cinema and on television.

However, it was actually the role of Jesus that has opened up new horizons for him. It was a role to which he added a very personal touch worthy of the epithet that would become almost viral in pages of newspapers, television programmes and social networks. It was Oprah, the American talk show host who needs no introductions, who described Diogo as “hot Jesus”, but everything started much earlier. “I didn’t appear in the first few episodes and in a series with 110 million viewers, the question constantly asked was ‘who is going to play Jesus’ he recalls. Curious, the American viewers searched in Google and “a guy appeared without tunic or thorns – me. They could not say if I was portraying him well or not, but just commented on the appearance. When my character entered they started to appreciate my work more and the choices I made”. Despite rejecting labels, he isn’t bothered by the fact they call him “hot Jesus” because it isn’t offensive. However, he understands where it comes from and believes that in Portugal it will be transient just as it was in the USA. “The Bible” will now move to cinema screens, but until the première, Diogo Morgado is continuing on screen in the USA with roles in the Fox television series “Revenge”.

Despite the public exposure he is not getting carried away on the wave of fame. He says that for him as a person nothing has changed. However it is clear that professionally much has changed. His prospects have widened and he has started to plan his work taking into account that there are now more markets on the horizon and he has started to manage his life between the two countries. Apart from that he ensures that there aren’t any big differences. “I used to be recognized in the streets of Lisbon but now sometimes I am recognised in the streets of Los Angeles.

People are nice but there’s no hysteria like when people see a Alec Baldwin or a Tom Hanks…”.

These weren’t the stages Diogo as a child imagined he would hit. He took his first steps in the artistic world at the age of 15 – children’s theatre, theatre, presentation of programmes, musicals ... and that’s how he filled the next six years, until the age of 21 he thought it was the right time to choose a serious path. “I was full of indecision for a month. I wanted to go to college but realised it was too late. All I could do was related to writing, performing and storytelling” he recalls. This was the reason for the push needed for the vocation.

“That’s how it happened and just as well it did happen”.

Now at 32, he continues to seek inspiration from two of his favourite actors – Armando Cortez and Nicolau Breyner. Both motivated him by being in the profession but also by their attitude to life. www.LIVENING.net | 33

Foi Armando que o descobriu: “Foi a primeira pessoa que me agarrou e viu que havia alguma coisa. E quando ele diz, acredita-se. Eu acreditei e acredito até hoje”. E Nicolau inspira-o pela noção de coletivo que tem: “Mesmo quando está mal, é muito difícil encontrá-lo com ele só”.

“Se ser ator é ser isto, eu quero ser isto”. Não tem dúvidas. E o que quer ser é “alguém que, acima de tudo, é um espelho do espetro da vida”. Contra rótulos e contra estereótipos, como o de que “um galã não faz comédia”.

Diogo fez e tem uma história para contar: “Houve um artigo nos Estados Unidos em que perguntavam por que é que este Jesus sorria tanto. Eu tive oportunidade de responder e pode ter parecido um bocadinho gratuito, mas se a história de Jesus era de alguém que chegava a um sítio e atraía multidões era porquê? Se calhar era só um sorriso. Um forasteiro a sorrir numa terra onde o sentimento de opressão era diário tinha de ser magnetizante. Sorrir foi uma decisão consciente. Aprendi o que é contagiar as pessoas com um sorriso e uma gargalhada e a falta que isso faz”.

It was Armando who discovered him: “He was the first person who pounced on me and saw that I had something. And when he says it, he is believed. I believed it then and I still believe it today.” And Nicolau inspires him with his ideas of collective work: “Even when things are not going well it is very difficult to encounter this one with him alone.”

“If being an actor is this, then this is what I want to be.” He has no doubts.

And what he wants to be is “someone, who at the end of the day, is a mirror on the spectrum of life”. He is against labels and against stereotypes.

Like the one where a star does not do comedy. Diogo does and has a story to tell: “There was an article in the USA which questioned why this Jesus smiled so much. I had the opportunity to respond and it may have seemed a little unfounded but if the story of Jesus is of someone who arrived at a location and attracted the multitudes, why was this? Perhaps it was just a smile. A stranger, smiling in a land where oppression could be felt every day, had to be mesmerising. Smiling was a conscious decision. I learnt how contagious smiles and laughter are for people and the effect when these are lacking.”

Um aeroporto para si é?

Um ponto de passagem.

O único sítio onde as culturas, as raças, as línguas, as religiões, os gostos e os desgostos são todos indiferentes, são todos secundários. Todos coabitam nos mesmos metros quadrados de uma forma extremamente pacífica, ninguém olha para o lado, está tudo focado no destino, o que não deixa de ser irónico e interessante ao mesmo tempo.

O que sente quando parte?

A partida evoca muito menos do que a chegada. Evoca expetativa face a algo que nos está a levar do sítio onde estamos e onde vivemos. E isso requer investimento, de tempo, de dinheiro.

E no regresso, o que sente? É sempre uma felicidade enorme. Não há altura nenhuma que não regresse e não fique brutalmente contente.

What is an airport for you?

A crossing point. The only place where cultures, races, languages, religions, tastes and irritations are all indifferent and are all secondary. They all share the same square metres extremely peacefully, nobody looks around, everyone is focused on the destination which is nonetheless both ironic and interesting.

What do you feel when you depart?

The departure evokes much less than the arrival. It evokes expectations of something that is removing us from the place where we are and where we live.

And this requires an investment of time and money.

And on the return what do you feel?

I always feel great happiness.

There has never been a time when I have not returned and felt brutally happy. When I return

Quando se regressa, a primeira coisa que se vê é o aeroporto e esse contacto, para mim, sempre foi prazeroso. Por alguma razão, sou teimoso em dizer que dificilmente viveria fora de Portugal, neste caso Lisboa, onde nasci, onde vivo, onde trabalho. Não é por acaso. Se calhar é um bocadinho arrogante dizer que é das cidades mais bonitas do mundo mas, para mim, é.

Das viagens qual lhe deu mais prazer?

Foi uma que fiz na América do Sul, ao Peru, Bolívia, Chile. É uma viagem especial, porque não são destinos óbvios. É uma viagem que se faz porque se quer mesmo, porque se deseja. Aconteceu quando estive quatro meses a gravar na floresta amazónica, antes de regressar a Portugal fiz essa viagem pelas diversas fronteiras do Lago Titicaca.

the first thing I see is the airport and this contact has always been a pleasure for me. For some reason I am stubborn in saying that it would be difficult for me to live away from Portugal, in this case Lisbon, where I was born, where I live and where I work. It is not by chance. It may be a little arrogant to say that it is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, but for me it is.

Which travel journeys have you enjoyed the most?

It was a trip I took to South America to Peru, Bolivia and Chile. It is a special trip because they are not obvious destinations. It is a trip you undertake because you want to, you really desire it. It took place when I had been recording for four months in the Amazon rainforest so before I returned to Portugal I took this trip through the various borders of Lake Titicaca.

Onde nunca se cansa de voltar, sem ser lisboa?

Curiosamente, a Los Angeles. Digo curiosamente porque é uma cidade que, à partida, tem muito pouco de apelativo, não está recheada daquele glamour cinematográfico de Nova Iorque.

Mas tem uma coisa de que gosto muito: é enorme, toda muito espalhada, gosto de não haver concentrações, de haver zonas, de haver espaço e poder movimentar-me respirando. É uma cidade em que se respira e em que me sinto muito confortável.

Apart from Lisbon where do you never tire of returning to?

Curiously Los Angeles. I say curiously because it is a city which, at first sight, has very little appeal – it is not full of that cinematic glamour found in New York.

But it does have something that I like very much. It is huge, everything is very spread out. I like the fact there are no concentrations, but zones and space where it is possible to move and breathe. It is a city where you can breathe and where I feel very comfortable.

Excentricidade e bom senso?

Diogo deixa escapar uma gargalhada quando lhe pedimos que aplique a si próprio o tema desta edição da revista – excentricidade e bom senso. “Não sou nada excêntrico”, começa por dizer, para logo sublinhar que tem “alguma dificuldade” em compreender a excentricidade. Na arte ou na moda a excentricidade é “fabulosa”, “criatividade pura”. E essa, sim, aprecia.

Já as pessoas que são excêntricas na sua forma de estar lhe merecem outra opinião – são “intromissivas”. Quanto ao bom senso, diz que é qualidade de que há “uma falta tremenda”. Mas acredita que é algo de que tem uma boa dose.

Eccentricity and good sense?

Diogo laughs out loud when we ask him if the theme of this issue – eccentricity and good sense – applies to him. “I am by no means eccentric” he starts saying and then stresses that he has “some difficulty” in understanding eccentricity. In art or in fashion eccentricity is “fabulous”, “pure creativity”.

And yes he appreciates this. But people who are eccentric in their way of being deserve another opinion – they “interfere”. As for good sense, he says that there is a “tremendous lack” of this quality. But he believes that it is something he has plenty. www.LIVENING.net | 35

Speaking of make-up, it’s time to look at the latest trends that were all the rage at the major fashion shows for autumn/ winter. For this season, “cold” colours (with such original and apt names as “steel”, “cement”, “slate” and “aluminium”) feature heavily around the eye – in contrast to the rest of the face, which is kept pale, almost “ghost like”. So, for eye shadow, feel free to experiment with a range of pale colours. Moisturise your lips with a lip balm (something you should always have in your make-up bag and with you on your flight) and apply just a little foundation or BB cream to your face. In harmony with this trend we have another equally low-key one you may want to consider. Playing with light on the face is essential and can be achieved not only with skin illuminators, but also with shimmering products that can be used on the eyes instead of eye shadows.

When you reach your destination you can try out more daring and eccentric but still perfectly on-trend looks.

Begin with your eyes – if you like to make them the focus of your look, then use liners and shadows.

Go for shades of black, charcoal, dark emerald, aubergine or midnight blue. Mascaras play a less important role, as all the drama and irreverence should be achieved with the liners and shadows.

If your lips are your strong feature, the M·A·C make-up artists recommend deep crimson (almost blood red) and plum shades. Choose your preferred shade and apply with care. Ideally, use a specific lip brush to help you get the perfect finish that will last longer.

PORTUGAL WINES GUIDE “Portuguese wine has changed a lot since the first edition and we have accompanied that evolution with great interest. It is an evolution that, in some cases, has been synonymous with modernity and, in others, with the preservation of traditional methods. What we see the most in Portugal are the old methods, such as the treading of grapes with the feet in traditional basins or the use of clay pots in the Alentejo region, side by side with the most advanced vineyard and wine-making technologies.

bacalhau, um sabor bem português Salt cod, the iconic taste of Portugal O bacalhau é rei na gastronomia portuguesa. Foi e continua a ser um fiel amigo, sempre presente, na mesa dos Portugueses. A sua versatilidade permite que se encontrem receitas para todas as ocasiões. Não há festa ou momento especial em que não apareça uma receita de bacalhau. No Natal, é presença certa em muitas ceias de norte a sul do país, acompanhado pelas tradicionais couves portuguesas, batatas e ovos cozidos. Há um conjunto de ingredientes que, tradicionalmente, combinam bem com o bacalhau.

O azeite, o alho e o pão. A sua versatilidade é tanta, que não se aborrece e combina bem com quase tudo o que a nossa imaginação consiga alcançar. Ou não tivéssemos nós, Portugueses, mais de mil e uma maneiras de confecionar o bacalhau. A receita que apresento junta o bacalhau ao arroz carolino. Este tipo de arroz é cultivado nos estuários dos rios Tejo, Sado e Mondego. É um arroz indicado para a confeção de pratos em que se queira que haja uma absorção dos sabores de outros alimentos. A par do bacalhau, os arrozes são pratos de referência na cozinha portuguesa. Para uma viagem pelos sabores portugueses, sugiro um delicioso arroz de bacalhau.

Salt cod (or bacalhau in Portuguese) is king in Portuguese cooking. It has been and continues to be a trusty friend that is always present on the Portuguese tables. Its versatility means that there are salt cod recipes for all occasions. There isn’t a feast or a special occasion in Portugal that does not feature salt cod in one form or other another.

At Christmas, it is a must on many Christmas Eve supper tables throughout the country – served with the traditional cabbage, potatoes and boiled eggs. Certain ingredients go particularly well with salt cod: amongst them olive oil, garlic and bread. This fish is so versatile that you cannot tire of it, as it can be served with almost everything we can imagine. In Portugal, we have, after all, and at least, 1001 different ways of cooking salt cod. The recipe below combines salt cod with “carolino” rice (medium grain). This type of rice is cultivated in the Tagus, Sado and Mondego estuaries in Portugal. It is ideal for dishes in which the rice is there to absorb all the flavour of the other ingredients. In addition to salt cod, rice dishes are a hallmark of the Portuguese cuisine. To begin your journey of discovering the Portuguese cuisine, I would suggest this delicious salt cod with rice dish.

Arroz de bacalhau salt cod with rice Ingredientes (para 4 pessoas) 2 postas de bacalhau / 320 g de arroz carolino / 1 dl de azeite 1,5 dl de vinho branco / 2 dentes de alho / 1 folha de louro 1 cebola / 5 dl de água ou caldo de cozedura do bacalhau 400 g de brócolos em floretes / Sal q.b.

Ingredients (for 4 people) 2 good chunks of salt cod | 320 g carolino rice | 1 dl olive oil | 1.5 dl white wine | 2 cloves of garlic | 1 bay leaf | 1 onion | 5 dl water or water in which the salt cod was cooked | 400 g broccoli in florets | Salt to taste Modo de Preparação 1. Cozer o bacalhau. Reservar o caldo e limpar as postas de bacalhau de peles e espinhas. 2. Num tacho, levar ao lume a cebola e os alhos picados, a folha de louro e o azeite. E basta alguém aparecer em nossas casas para rapidamente se começar a pôr a mesa com o que quer que tenhamos em casa.

Para além do prazer de cozinhar, temos o prazer de ter pessoas a celebrar e partilhar à volta de uma mesa, onde pouco mais é preciso do que pão e vinho.

Partilho aqui algo simples usando o pão como base. Umas entradas com sabores portugueses que saberão ainda melhor se acompanhadas por um bom vinho português.

In Portugal, we enjoy sitting around a dinner table. We like to be eating and conversing around a big table full of friends and family, with a variety of dishes, sweets and wines. It’s not unusual for us to sit down at the table at lunchtime and still be there at 6 o’clock in the afternoon. We lunch, we snack and we have dinner in one extended sitting, with lots of conversation, laughter and perhaps even music and card games in between. That’s just who we are – we see every event as an occasion to gather around the table. Anything can be an excuse for a dinner, a lunch or an afternoon tea. All we need is someone to show up at our home and we start right away to set the table with whatever we have at the time. In addition to the pleasure of cooking, we love to have people around to celebrate and share with, and sometimes we need little more than bread and wine. So, allow me to share with you some simple recipes using bread as a basis. These are starters featuring typical Portuguese flavours that will taste even better if accompanied by a good Portuguese wine.

Queijo e mel: 1 queijinho de ovelha ou vaca curado / mel q.b. / pão e vinho para acompanhar Ingredients Tuna and black-eyed peas salad: 1 can of black-eyed peas / 2 cans of tuna in olive oil / olive oil / vinegar and fleur de sel to taste / ½ chopped onion / 2 tbsp of chopped parsley Seasoned olives 200 g black olives / 3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped 3 tbsp. oregano / Olive oil, to taste Cheese and honey 1 cured sheep’s or cow’s milk cheese / honey / bread and wine for serving Modo de Preparação Para a saladinha de feijão-frade escorra bem o feijão e coloque-o numa taça. Escorra depois o atum, esfarele-o com um garfo e junte-o ao feijão-frade. Acrescente depois a cebola e a salsa picada e tempere com azeite e vinagre a gosto. Envolva bem e deixe repousar 30 minutos antes de servir.

Para as azeitonas temperadas, coloque-as também numa tacinha e junte o alho picado, os orégãos secos e tempere com azeite.

Envolva bem e deixe repousar. Corte depois fatias de pão e torre-as ligeiramente. Ainda quentes, regue-as com azeite e salpique com flor de sal. (É algo semelhante a isto que se faz nos lagares quando chega a altura de provar o azeite novo. Normalmente o pão é torrado na brasa e é servido com bacalhau acabado de assar!) Sirva as azeitonas temperadas e a saladinha de feijão frade sobre estas fatias de pão.

Corte depois, mais algumas fatias de pão e sobre estas disponha fatias finas de queijo curado. Regue generosamente com mel e sirva de imediato. Bom Apetite! directions For the black-eyed peas salad, drain the can of peas well and empty into a bowl. Drain the tuna, break it up with a fork and add to the peas. Add the chopped onion and parsley. Then, add olive oil and vinegar. Mix salad thoroughly and let it rest 30 minutes before serving.

To make the seasoned olives, place the olives in a bowl and add the chopped garlic, dried oregano and olive oil. Mix the ingredients well and leave for a while before serving.

Then cut slices of bread and toast them lightly. While still hot, pour olive oil over the bread and season with the fleur de sel. (This is something similar to what is done at the olive oil presses to taste the new olive oil production. Normally the bread is toasted on a charcoal grill and served with freshly roasted salt cod!) Serve the seasoned olives and black-eyed peas salad on the bread slices.

Afterwards, cut some more slices of bread and place fine slices of cured cheese on them. Then, pour honey on the cheese and bread liberally and serve immediately. Bon appétit!

“Coimbra tem mais encanto na hora da despedida”. São versos do autor e compositor Fernando Machado Soares na “Balada da Despedida”, por ele também cantada para dar voz à magia que a cidade exerce sobre todos quantos os que por lá passam. Esta figura maior da canção coimbrã, o chamado Fado de Coimbra, não se referia então aos turistas, mas aos estudantes, a todos aqueles cuja vivência académica foi tecida entre as muitas tradições que fizeram da Universidade de Coimbra muito mais do que um polo de ensinamentos e conhecimentos – uma experiência de vida única.

E experiências únicas é o que a cidade continua a proporcionar aos visitantes. O pretexto para uma visita pode ser o mesmo dos versos do fadista: a Universidade. Para sentir ao vivo o que levou a UNESCO a classificá-la, em junho de 2013, como Património da Humanidade.

Um dos mais belos exemplares de arquitetura barroca em Portugal, com uma traça de clara influência italiana, é um dos ícones de Coimbra. Ou não se situasse ela no ponto mais alto da cidade, justamente conhecido como Alta. Igualmente classificada como Património da Humanidade, tem na Rua da Sofia o seu expoente máximo. Herdeira do termo grego “sophia”, que significa sabedoria, veio confirmar a cidade como centro cultural e universitário.

Remonta a meados do século XVI o seu traço, de amplitude inédita para a época. Era provavelmente uma das artérias mais largas da Europa, já assim se adivinhando o papel que viria a desempenhar 58 | www.LIVENING.net

“Coimbra is more enchanting when it’s time to bid farewell.” So wrote the author and composer Fernando Machado Soares in his “Balada da Despedida” (Ballad of Farewell), which he also set to music, to express the magic of the city that every visitor can feel. This leading exponent of the song of Coimbra, known as the Coimbra Fado, was not thinking about the tourists who visit the city but about the students and all of those who have built their academic careers out of the many traditions that have made Coimbra University more than just a seat of education and knowledge, but also a unique life experience.

But the city continues to offer unique experiences to all visitors. The reasons for a visit may have to do with what the famous Fado composer wrote about – the university and student life. The visitor may wish to see in person what led UNESCO to classify the university as a World Heritage site in June 2013. One of the most beautiful examples of Baroque architecture in Portugal, is the tower, which reveals clear Italian influences, and is one of the Coimbra’s landmarks. It is, after all, located at the highest point of the city, on top of the University Hill, known locally as the “Alta”.

Likewise classified as a World Heritage site, the Alta area has its hallmark in Rua da Sofia. Deriving its name from the Greek word “sophia”, which means wisdom, this street has contributed to establishing the city as a cultural and academic centre. Its layout dates back to the mid-16th century, though its width is unprecedented for the period. It was probably one of the widest thoroughfares in Europe when it was built, anticipating

Como rua nobre que era, durante séculos, o seu dinamismo esteve intimamente ligado à vida universitária, mais distante dos ritmos urbanos propriamente ditos. Mas a distância foi-se esbatendo e o comércio ganhou direito a um lugar próprio.

Hoje fervilha de vida e é um centro nevrálgico da cidade. Rivalizando com a Baixa, de ruas estreitas, pátios, escadinhas e arcos mediáveis a espraiarem-se até ao Mondego.

Ali, o comércio e o artesanato reinaram desde sempre, em contraste com a Alta, residência de nobres, religiosos, ilustres e estudantes. Não é apenas o centro da vida urbana, mas o centro histórico de Coimbra: depois de uma visita à Universidade, descer até ao rio é um convite a visitar monumentos como o Mosteiro de Santa Cruz, a Sé Velha, ou o Arco e a Torre de Almedina.

Ou a fazer compras na mais comercial de todas as ruas, a Ferreira Borges, ou ainda mergulhar no tipicismo do mercado municipal D. Pedro V. No caminho, não deve o visitante admirar-se se se cruzar amiúde com jovens de negro, vestidos a rigor nos seus trajes académicos.

Os mesmos que nas festas estudantis dão voz ao fado de Coimbra, que tanto se ouve nos recantos do Jardim da Sereia ou nos muitos espaços noturnos onde se mantém a tradição. Coimbra tem, de facto, encanto. Não apenas na hora da despedida.

the role it would play in the city. It was in this street where the first colleges were built. As a noble thoroughfare for centuries, its dynamism was always closely linked to university life. However, that distance has been overcome and trade and commerce have now earned their rightful place. Today, it is teeming with life and it is one of the city’s nerve centres. It rivals the downtown area known as the Baixa, with its medieval narrow streets, courtyards, stairs and arches that extend down to the Mondego river. In the Baixa, trade and handicrafts have always made the rules of the day, in contrast to the Alta area, where nobles, clergy, illustrious figures and students live. The Baixa is not only the centre of the urban life, but is also the historic centre of Coimbra. After a visit to the University, a walk down to the river is an opportunity to visit monuments such as Santa Cruz Monastery, the Old Cathedral (Sé Velha) and the Almedina Arch and Tower. Or, to do some shopping in the city’s most important shopping thoroughfare, Rua de Ferreira Borges. Or to plunge into the typical hustle and bustle of the Dom Pedro V municipal market. While on your way, don’t be surprised if you frequently come across young people all dressed in black – in their traditional academic attire. You may find them at the student celebrations giving renditions of the Coimbra Fado, which one can often hear in the retreats of the Jardim da Seraia or in the many nocturnal venues which keep this tradition alive. Guta Moura Guedes is a name renowned internationally in the field of design. She is a curator, creative director, strategist and scholar. As well as founder and chairwoman of Experimentadesign, the organisation behind the EXD Bienal, the greatest design event in Portugal, she has also sat as a jury in the most prestigious international awards, such as the Hermès Design Prize or the Curry Stone Design Prize. Her career has always been linked to culture: she was consultant for the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Music Department, adviser to the board of the Casa da Música Foundation and director of the Centro Cultural de Belém Foundation. In 2005 she was bestowed as Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government.

Carlos do Carmo is one of the leading figures of the song from Lisbon but which has been embraced by the whole country. He has been singing fado for 50 years with the dedication of a calling. He began, quite by chance, by humming the verses he heard in his mother’s voice, Lucília do Carmo. Since then, he has dedicated his life and all his talent to fado and built one of the most solid musical careers in Portugal, embodying fado in its male form. As a born performer and communicator, he has sold more than one million records. His “Duetos” album is a celebration of his 50 years of dedication to what he calls “Lisbon’s soul”.

The best place to listen to fado is... visitors have two options: they can listen to fado in its most modest form, i.e. in small fado houses where people sing spontaneously and freely, more in the spirit of an amateur than in a professional setting, or they go to professional fado houses – there are two or three good ones – which offer a different perspective on appreciating fado, i.e. having a good meal and listening to first-rate performers.

O lugar mais inspirador da cidade é… o bairro onde vivi até me casar, a Bica. Gosto muito do Bairro Alto, onde trabalhei até aos 40 anos, mas, hoje e sempre, a Bica é motivo de grande inspiração para quem viveu a infância e a adolescência num bairro de Lisboa muito marcado pelo lado genuíno da vida.

Fica-se de água na boca quando se prova… Lisboa tem restaurantes para todos os gostos, dos mais requintados às tascas onde se come muito bem. Tem algumas tradições gastronómicas imperdíveis como os peixinhos da horta e as pataniscas de bacalhau. São pequenos pormenores…

Não se pode ir a Lisboa sem… visitar os bairros, porque estão ligados à alma da cidade. Mas há várias coisas a não perder: os museus dos Coches, do Azulejo, de Arte Antiga, os Jerónimos, a Torre de Belém, os miradouros, algumas igrejas extraordinariamente belas por dentro. O Martim Moniz, para conhecer o lado multiétnico da cidade. O Terreiro do Paço, pela excelente remodelação integrada e com vida. Guardo para o fim um pequeno museu que não existe em mais parte alguma do mundo: o Museu do Fado. É como ir a Roma e não ver o Papa…

The most inspirational part of the city is… the neighbourhood I lived in until I got married – Bica. I love Bairro Alto, where I worked until I was around 40. But today, as always, Bica is a source of great inspiration for those who spent their childhood and adolescence in this Lisbon neighbourhood marked by the genuine side of life.

A mouth-watering experience is when you taste… Lisbon has restaurants for all tastes – from the most refined to taverns where you can eat good honest food. Some have traditional specialties that no-one should fail to try, such as peixinhos da horta (deep-fried green beans) and pataniscas de bacalhau (cod fritters).

You can’t go to Lisbon and not… pay a visit to the old residential neighbourhoods because they have a connection with the city’s soul.

But there is so much more you shouldn’t miss: the Coach Museum, Tile Museum, Museum of Ancient Art, the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower, the belvederes and a number of churches with extraordinarily beautiful interiors. The area around Martim Moniz square,where you can discover the multi-ethnic side of the city. Praça do Comércio square with its excellently integrated remodelling that has added a new life to it. And, if I may save the best for last, a little museum that cannot be found in any other part of the world: the Fado Museum. Not visiting it would be like going to Rome and not seeing the Pope.

asceu em Caracas, a capital venezuelana, um mês antes de em Portugal acontecer a revolução que haveria de ficar conhecida como a dos Cravos, em 1974. Filha de portugueses, atravessou o Atlântico aos 18 anos para se instalar no Porto. Quatro anos depois, vencia o concurso “Porto de Moda”. Estava lançada a sua carreira como estilista. Desde então é presença incontornável no palco da moda portuguesa. A sua maturidade criativa tem-lhe valido prémios internacionais, como o da feira Moda & Tecnologia de Florença ou o certificado de excelência da revista Design How. As suas criações têm tido lugar nas páginas das mais conceituadas edições, que fazem eco da sua participação nos principais eventos de moda e design.

Os seus looks não conhecem fronteiras: que o digam a Hello Kitty e a Barbie, que também vestem Katty Xiomara.

O Porto inspira a… romancear: não sei como explicar, mas acho que transmite uma melancolia gaiata e feliz.

A melhor vista do Porto é… Tive o privilégio de a ver recentemente do topo do edifício da Cadeia da Relação, bem no centro da cidade. Mas em movimento, ao passar qualquer uma das pontes do Porto, temos uma vista maravilhosa da cidade, aliás das duas cidades, Gaia e Porto, mesmo quando invadidas pelo espesso nevoeiro característico das nossas manhãs.

O melhor local para um brinde é… o Solar do Vinho do Porto: embora necessite mimar mais os seus clientes, a verdade é que compensa beber um bom vinho com uma vista da cidade sobre os Jardins do Palácio de Cristal.

She was born in 1974 in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, one month before the revolution in Portugal which would become known as the Carnation Revolution. Daughter of Portuguese parents, when she was 18, she crossed the Atlantic to settle in Porto. Four years later she won the “Porto de Moda” competition, launching her career as a fashion designer.

Since then she has been a continuous presence on the Portuguese fashion scene. Her creative maturity has won her international awards such as the Fashion & Technology Florence award and the certificate of excellence from the Design How journal. Her creations have been featured in the most prestigious magazines which reflects her participation in major fashion and design events. Her looks transcend recognisable borders. It is said that Hello Kitty and Barbie also wear Katty Xiomara.

Porto inspires her… to romanticise: I don’t know how to explain it, but I think it conveys a playful and happy melancholy.

The best view in Porto is… Recently I had the privilege to see the city from the roof of the Cadeia da Relação building, in the heart of the city centre. But when travelling around over any of the bridges in Porto we have wonderful views of the city, indeed of the two cities, Gaia and Porto, even when they are overcome by the thick fog characteristic of our mornings.

The best place for a toast is... the Solar do Vinho do Porto.

Although it needs to pamper its clients more, the truth is that this is compensated by drinking a good port wine with a view over the city above the Crystal Palace Gardens.

The best flavour of Porto is… traditional “moelinhas” and also “tripinhas”.
