The “All-Around Sharper” Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp led a long, sordid life on the American frontier, moving freely between “sporting women” and the law. Although he was never the marshal of a town or the sheriff of a county he somehow managed to wangle his way into American folklore as the paragon of lawman virtue. There have been 35 films, so far, on his checkered life, mostly told through the eyes of the stalwart lawman.
Reflections of a Life on the Frontier Wyatt Earp Gazes across the Colorado River towards Arizona in 1925. He has lived 77 years on the frontier and no doubt has plenty to reflect on. – PHOTO COURTESY JEFF MOREY –

FEBRUARY 2019
The Moment of Truth— A Misdemeanor Arrest Gone Awry On October 26, 1881, Wyatt Earp and his brothers, along with a dentist, Doc Holliday, squared off in a side yard off Fremont Street, in Tombstone, Arizona. When the smoke cleared, three cowboys lay dead or dying and the Earps became targets for vengeance. In March, of 1882, Wyatt’s younger brother Morgan was murdered while playing pool and Wyatt became enraged and vowed to track down and kill anyone responsible for the vile crime.
Vendetta In the days and weeks after Morgan’s murder, Wyatt Earp gunned down one Florentino Cruz at South Pass, gave both barrels of a shotgun to Frank Stilwell, and then allegedly did the same to Curly Bill Brocius. By the time he left the state in April of 1882, Earp was a fugative from justice. Earp later, moved to Hollywood where shady characters are not only celebrated but deified. At the time of his death, in 1929, the California town of Drenan (at right) changed its name to Earp, California.
Earp on the Colorado After his much publicized troubles in Tombstone, Wyatt Earp left Arizona in early 1882 as a fugitive wanted for murder. But as time went on, he did return to Arizona, frequenting the towns along the Colorado River. He was known to gamble in Yuma, Parker, Needles, White Hills, Oatman and Goldroad, and he got elected as Cibola’s constable in 1904. His Happy Days mining claim across the river from Parker was where he spent many a winter after summering in Los Angeles.

Art of the Cowgirl offers All-Star Lineup at February Event
Art of the Cowgirl, a groundbreaking art and horsemanship event, has crafted an all-star lineup of cowgirl artisans representing an extensive mixture of media designed to appeal to art lovers and horsemen alike. Art of the Cowgirl will come to life February 8-10 in Phoenix, Arizona, at Corona Ranch and will feature master artists in a number of fields, including engraving, saddle making, boot making, rawhide braiding and horsemanship. The event will also feature an art auction, an approved All Women’s Ranch Rodeo and an Elite Ranch Horse Sale. “This has been a vision for the last five years and I am thrilled to see it come to life,” said noted horsewoman and bootmaker Tammy Pate, the event’s creator, “These artists have been selected to provide not only an outstanding lecture series at the event, but more importantly to mentor emerging artists, both male and female, through the Art of the Cowgirl Fellowship program.” Among the featured artists are: Master Saddle Maker Nancy Martiny, a second generation leatherworker and fourth generation rancher from May, Idaho, followed in the footsteps of her father, who made purses, belts, and wallets for friends and family, Nancy learned the basics of carving leather from him while in high school. She was soon making belts for friends, and a life-long passion was born. She turned her passion into a profession after receiving lessons from saddle maker Dale Harwood. After building the first saddle for herself, and the next one for her kids, she started getting orders from friends, and a thirty year career began. Master Rawhide Braider & Horsehair Hitcher Teresa Black, of Plush, Oregon, is a rawhide braider and horse hair hitcher. Originally exposed to leather work, Teresa discovered rawhide braiding in 2000 when she met Bill Black, renowned western gear maker. They were married 2001, and soon 32
after, Bill began teaching Teresa the art of braiding a reata and she has been braiding ever since. Their daughter, Montana, was born in 2004 and is also starting to braid and do leather work. Teresa has established herself as a talented horsewoman, artist and maker in the western industry. Master Engraver & Silversmith Amy Raymond of Helix, Oregon, has worked with bit and spur makers, Hugh Coffelt and Jim Baltzor, as well as master engraver Diane Scalese and world renowned bit and spur maker Ernie Marsh. She especially enjoys the freedom her art provides her to raise her children and help around the ranch, as well as in fulfilling her need to build cowboy gear and art with her hands. Master Boot Maker Kelly Martin of Battle Mountain, Nevada, was inspired by her father George who bought a shoe repair shop in the early 70’s and began building boots for working cowboys in the early 80’s in addition to his own saddles, chaps, and other leather goods when he wasn’t working as a cowboy.
The majority of here clientele are working cowboys who appreciate her understanding of what they need to do their job because she’s been in their boots, working cows, branding calves, making a living in a saddle. Master Fine Artist Jan Mapes of southeast Colorado was influenced by both art and science, a powerful combination that continues to fuel a passion in Jan for nature and the wonder tucked into the fabric of creation. As she sought to render the wonder around her through art, Jan began to realize that an object is not alone but is defined by its context: whether it is larger than, brighter than, quicker than… what is next to it. Each element in creation or any work of art is dependent on the rest. Her goal is to weave these components together in each painting and sculpture, resulting in a pleasant visual experience much like a great chef’s meal or a beautiful symphony. Master Photographer Constance Jaeggi of Fort Worth, Texas, is a true testament to the fact that
FEBRUARY 2019
being a cowgirl comes as much from spirit as from being born into the lifestyle. Born in London to a Swiss family and eventually returning to Switzerland, as a young girl she began riding horses and soon discovered the sport of cutting. She graduated from Texas Christian University in 2013 and completed a photography program at the New York Film Academy in New York City in 2015 Constance has the unique ability to draw the connection between her two passions, which shows in not only her art, but her artistry on a horse as well. Master Horsewoman Lee Smith of Wickenburg, Arizona, has been conducting horsemanship clinics throughout the world since 1991. She and her husband, Mark, instruct nearly 40 clinics a year around the world as well as run cow-calf operation and raise quarter horses at their Diamond S Ranch. Lee is a gifted and eloquent teacher who has extraordinary insight into horses and people. Lee leads people on a pathway of discovery to the essential elements of horsemanship. She helps them to unlock their potential to understand the mind, body and spirit of the horse using what naturally happens, and then shows them how to appreciate and build upon the incredible moments of harmony that are possible. Art of the Cowgirl is supported by Western Horseman magazine, J5 Horse Ranch, Priefert Farm and Ranch Equipment, Purina Horse Feed, Wrangler, Montana Silversmiths, Cowboy Lifestyle Network and Greeley Hat Works. Tickets are available in single day or full weekend passes and can be purchased online at ArtOfTheCowgirl.com or at the gate for a slightly higher fee during the event. It may be the hat and boots or just a love for the look and lifestyle. Either way, cowgirls are a unique breed with a sense of style and attitude that beckons artists to their door or pasture and, many times, stirs them to become artists themselves. Art of the Cowgirl, the vision of cowgirl Tammy Pate of Ryegate, Montana, will celebrate this distinctive group of women during the event taking place at Corona Ranch February 8-10 just outside Phoenix, Arizona.
Art of the Cowgirl Brings
Recognition to Cowgirl Influencers “This has been a dream of mine for many years,” said Tammy, a boot maker, horsemanship clinician and yoga instructor. “With my husband Curt, I have had the pleasure to cross paths with some incredible women who live this lifestyle every day and have worked to capture it various forms of art, whether that be
rawhide braiding, silver engraving, photography or even the art of training a horse. “Art of the Cowgirl is designed to spotlight these wonderful women while sharing the stories of their families, marriages and partnerships that in turn shaped them.”

The event will showcase female makers, master artists, silversmiths, braiders, saddlemakers and horsewomen. The event will not only provide entertainment and honor women of the West, but will also provide fellowships to individuals to further their knowledge with master artists in the trade of choice. It will include workshops from “Masters,” along with horsemanship clinics, an all-girl ranch rodeo and an elite horse sale, featuring horses bred and trained for ranch work. All consignment fees for the Elite Ranch Horse Sale will go toward funding the Art of the Cowgirl fellowship program. “At the root of all of this is the opportunity to encourage up and coming artists, male and female,” said Pate. “Through our fellowship program, which is a not for profit foundation, we will work to pair those who want to learn with those who are ‘masters’ at their crafts. Funding generated by the event will provide support for the Master and the fellowship recipient.” Pate said that as the event celebrates its inaugural year companies or individuals interested in sponsoring the event, a Master or a fellowship recipient have an opportunity to get involved early and be a part of the excitement for this new event. ARENA ROCK REMOVAL IN ARIZONA About Rock Relief
HOW IT WORKS
We’ll pull into your existing arena and allow Rockyln to do her thing…Pick up rocks. With her pristine design, she is able to pick up a variety of rock sizes, as small as 3/8 going up to 6 inches deep of the surface sifting through without removing your footing.
Here at Rock Relief, we pride ourselves for having the one and ONLY Rock Relief machine. Unlike “those other companies” that claim to have an arena rock removal machine, Rocklyn is designed to remove rock specifically from arenas. She is the Queen of the arena. This is why we have a superb reputation.
Rocklyn employs a sifting technology used to lift the existing footing from your arena on to a special/secret screen. The screen then sifts the unwanted rock from the arena, while the footing returns to the arena, and the remaining debris is deposited in the bucket.
Meet Rocklyn... She’s a badass arena rock removal machine designed with few moving parts and extremely durable components.
We’ll gather the rock and neatly pile it up for easy removal. She’s built of steel to ensure durability and consistency.

2018 USEF Horse of the Year: Kat Fuqua's Triple Crown Equines Lock in the Loot Fuqua and RS Levitation aka Jett (Photo courtesy of Sara Hellner)
The elegance and grandeur of the 2018 USEF Horse of the Year banquet, held at the West Palm Beach Hilton, was the icing on the cake for Junior and Pony Hunter rider Kat Fuqua. The 11-year-old,
Atlanta-based equestrian took home accolades ranging from Leading Pony Hunter owner to Champion Junior Hunter. Joined by trainer Michael Newman and parents Jeff & Shereen Fuqua, she and a ballroom full of some of the most decorated US equestrians celebrated their 2018 achievements. Fuqua's Finesse RF was awarded the 2018 USEF Horse of the Year Medium Pony Hunter Champion. Ladybug, as the pony is known around the barn, took Fuqua to top placings at just about every major horse show on the east coast. The chestnut mare also carried Fuqua to her debut silver screen performance, where the pair played a competition challenger for the protagonist of the currently in production Billy and Blaze movie. Another of Fuqua's pony superstars, Brighton, was also given top honors, taking 2018 Grand Champion Pony and 2018 Large Pony Hunter USEF Horse of the Year, which is a reflection of his wins of Grand Champion Pony at the 2018 USEF Pony Finals and Champion Large Pony at the 2018 Washington International Horse Show. Brighton's win as the 2018 USEF Grand Champion Pony Hunter earned him and Fuqua the Farnley Miranda Trophy. Chic In Time, aka Spicey, finished third in the 2018 USEF Large Hunter Pony 48
Fuqua with Michael Newman (left), mom Shereen Fuqua, and dad Jeff Fuqua Championship. In her first year riding the division, Fuqua's mount RS Levitation, aka Jett, was named the 2018 Junior Hunter Small 15 and Under USEF Horse of the Year Champion. And finally, Fuqua's team of horses and ponies earned her the title of USEF Leading Pony Owner for 2018. All of Fuqua's ponies and horses were schooled, trained and shown by Fuqua herself, under the guidance of trainer Michael Newman. The day after she and her family were recognized by the USEF for her accomplishments in 2018, Fuqua and her newest partner, Prestige aka Prince, were named the Winter Equestrian Festival Week 1 Medium Pony Champion. Brighton also took in the Large Pony Hunter Classic during WEF 1. "The US Equestrian Award banquet was amazing and it was awesome to be surrounded by so many of my show friends and amazing riders," said Fuqua. "It was a great experience and even better to go out and win another
Champion ribbon during the first week of WEF. We are super excited for 2019!" Kat Fuqua's passion for horses is reflected not only in her highly decorated Pony Hunter and Junior Hunter rider results, but also in the joy and dedication she shows each time she swings into the saddle. Based out of Atlanta, Georgia and under the guidance of trainer Michael Newman, every aspect of Fuqua's riding, training, and show career reflects a unique ardor for equines and horse sport. She balances her equestrian lifestyle with attendance as a full time 5th grade student and takes pride in developing alongside her horses. In addition to riding, Kat enjoys spending time with her school friends and her favorite subject is French. For more information on Kat Fuqua (pronounced fooquay), visit her website at www. Nevada Mustang Named USEF National Horse of the Year
A formerly wild horse from Nevada has been named the US Equestrian National Horse of the Year. Cobra is a 14-year-old mustang owned and trained by Marsha Hartford-Sapp. Since he was rounded up in Nevada at the age of six, HartfordSapp has been devoted to the gelding, training him with caution and respect for his instincts to
create a deep bond. Their mutual trust has seen them through competitions in both classical and Western dressage, where Cobra’s versatility and talent for each has been apparent. As one of the founding horses of USEF Western dressage competition, Cobra was one of the first recipients of the 2015 Horse of the Year awards in that discipline and has continued to collect numerous accolades ever since. In 2018, Cobra and HartfordSapp won the Western Dressage Association of America’s Western Dressage World Championship Level 4 Test 3 Open, were reserve champions in the Level 3 Test 3 Open and the Western Dressage Musical Freestyle, and Cobra was named Western Dressage Level 4 Horse of the Year. Cobra was also the 2018 Adequan®/United States Dressage Federation AllBreeds American Mustang & Burro Association Prix St. Georges National Champion. “Thank you so much for everyone that voted and believed in the same vision that I had for this horse,” said Hartford-Sapp. “Several years ago I stood in the middle of a round pen with a horse that was six-years-old when he was rounded up by helicopter and had never been touched by human hands. The horse took me to the FEI levels. I won my USDF silver medal riding this horse and two world championships. But more than that, when I first met this horse I made a promise that I would make sure that he got the training that would ensure that he got a good life.” 50

Chewing Gum for Horses
GumBits, makers of all natural, chewing gum for horses, recently expanded its international market into a new Asian country: Japan. Veterinarian and avid dressage and show jumping rider Momoko Ito approached GumBits in 2018 asking about the usefulness of the product in reducing grinding and other tension related issues in her horses. After reading testimonials and getting a deeper understanding of the product,

Ito decided to import GumBits and the rest, as they say, is history, with her tack shop becoming the first GumBits distributor in Japan. Ito now sells GumBits out of her tack shop, Qualite, where GumBits are one of the featured products. As a showjumper and dressage rider, Ito realized the value of GumBits for horses with a sensitive tongue and mouth, or who are prone to tension related grinding or tongue movement. Her experience with GumBits' ability to reduce teeth grinding, relax the mouth, and encourage salivation was what prompted her to become the first Japanese distributor. Despite being a fussy eater, Ito's dressage gelding quickly came around to GumBits as a treat, and Ito began to reap the benefits: "There is no more grinding and he is much smoother into the contact and taking the bit," said Ito. "He knows where I keep the bag, and looks for it every time I go to ride. We have a show this week in dressage and next week in jumping so I will be taking the GumBits with me. In Japan, the importance of salivation for riding isn't widely known, so we are working to make this more well known." GumBits' tasty morsels have been softening equine mouths and encouraging salvation around the world, and the "chewing gum for horses" is currently used by a selection of the world's top Olympic and international competitors and are 100% FEI legal. GumBits are composed of an all natural combination of sugar and beeswax, and double as both a treat and a training tool. Their taste and texture encourage soft chewing, salivation, and a better connection with the bit. The all natural, bite sized pieces are perfect for use with or without a bridle, and naturally promote chewing activity, encourage submission, activates salivation, and eliminates teeth grinding. NRHA Announces 2018 Professionals of the Year
Each year, National Reining Horse Association affiliates are invited to nominate their favorite NRHA Professionals for top honors in one of the following categories: Professional Horseman of the Year, Professional Horsewoman of the Year, Non Pro Coach of the Year, Youth Coach of the Year, and Up-and-Coming Trainer of the Year. See who took home top honors in 2018.
NRHA Professional Horseman of the Year: Dan Huss Dan Huss at the AQHA World Show riding Ms Dreamy Dan Huss’ career in the saddle began over 30 years ago. Pursuing his passion, he double majored in science and equestrian studies at the University of Findlay, where he stayed to teach for 20 years. It was in the early 2000s when Huss and his wife, Wendy, decided to instead pursue the training process he had developed at Findlay (breaking down each maneuver into a few steps, allowing a client to master it, and then moving on to the next). Their first stop was Double Run Farms in North Carolina, where Huss trained Wimpys Little Step, a well-known sire in the reining industry who went on to win the 2002 NRHA Futurity. The adventure didn’t stop there; Chicago, Illinois was where they then spent the next three years, developing a successful training program for non pro rider, Jose Vasquez.
72
FEBRUARY 2019
In 2006, Dan and Wendy Huss were able to set up Even Odd Farms, their own training facility. Here, they made a name for themselves before moving to Scottsdale, Arizona for its potential to grow their business in the reining industry. Huss continues to coach top level non pros and youth riders at Huss Performance Horses while also bringing home big NRHA titles himself. His NRHA Lifetime Earnings (LTE) exceed $550,000 with many championship titles and finalist qualifications in the NRHA Derby, NRHA Futurity, All American Quarter Horse Congress, and many more. He also helped the U.S. Reining Team bring home a gold medal in the FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) in 2018 where he also took home an individual silver medal. To top off his accomplishments, not only a reiner but also as a horseman, was his crowdwowing, bridleless run on Ms Dreamy at the AQHA World Championship Show in the Senior Reining. That moment will remain a part of reining history.

2019 Sun Circuit Features America
Any horse enthusiast will enjoy the variety of events held at the 2019 Sun Circuit March 2-10 at WestWorld in Scottsdale. From the refinement of the english style Hunter Under Saddle Horses, to the raw athleticism of the working cow horses, Sun Circuit attracts the best American Quarter Horses from across North America for a week-long equine extravaganza. It is wellknow as one of the top 10 AQHA horse shows in the country. Admission and parking are free for spectators. As many as 7 arenas will hold classes every day, offering visitors plenty of options. The National Snaffle Bit Association (NSBA) is holding its prestigious Rider’s Cup event at Sun Circuit on March 5 and 6. Non Pro NSBA members show in Western Pleasure, Hunter Under Saddle, Trail, Western Riding, Showmanship, Western Horsemanship, and Hunt Seat Equitation events. Beautiful silver trophy cups are awarded to the champions and over $75,000 in prize money is on the line. Cattle classes entice exhibitors with lucrative awards as well. For edge-of-your-seat action, The $20,000 Added Smart Boons Fence Challenge and Farnam Golden Cowboy finals is always a crowd pleasing spectacle of equine athleticism featuring the top reined cow horses in the nation. This event has its roots in cowboy tradition where quick-footed, intelligent horses with nerves of steel were highly valued to assist with daily chores. The horses first demonstrate their herd work abilities similar to a cutting class by “boxing” a single cow at one end of the arena. The rider and horse then turn the cow down the length of the arena along the rail at break-neck speed making at least one turn each way. Finally the cow is circled in both directions in the center of the arena. The Fence Challenge will be held on Friday, March 8th. Besides the Challenge, Cow Horse exhibitors from youth to pros will be showing in classes throughout the week. The popular Sun Circuit Rope Horse Futurity will be back again for 4, 5 and 6 year old horses on March 2nd. This American Rope Horse Futurity Association (ARHFA) event draws a large number of exceptional ropers and their young, talented mounts. Roping fans enjoy this event, and many a professional roper can be found in the stands looking for their next prospect. There is also a full slate of western, english, jumping, trail and halter classes. Reining horses and riders complete a prescribed pattern full of hard-driving runs, sliding stops and dizzying spins. “Ranch” classes have become very popular with riders showing off their horses’ skills, versatility and smooth gait, all necessary for long days in the saddle for working ranch horses. Cutting classes are also on the schedule where horses separate a cow from the herd and prevent it from returning with quick stops and bold determination. The general public is welcome to attend Sun Circuit’s free clinics. Anyone wanting to learn the finer points of working cow horse will want to attend the clinic presented by Corey Cushing & Kelby Phillips on Friday March 1 at 4 PM in the Markel Insurance Arena (Equidome). These two legendary horseman have a slew of World titles between them and a breezy style that is both entertaining and jam-packed informational. That same day at 5PM in Arena 6, Gary Roberts will be showing people the best techniques for maneuvering through trail 76

USEF Initiates Proceedings to Terminate AERC Affiliate Status
The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) has announced that it has initiated proceedings to terminate the recognized affiliate status of the American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC) as soon as possible following the AERC Board of Director’s approval of a disaffiliation motion on January 14, 2019, indicating that they wish
to terminate their affiliation with USEF as of December 1, 2019. While USEF shares AERC’s concerns regarding horse welfare, the Federation considers this delayed disaffiliation to be contrary to the best interest of the future of endurance sport on a national and international level. During AERC’s proposed period between now and
December 1, 2019, USEF cannot be certain that AERC will comply with USEF’s affiliate requirements, including compliance with bylaws, rules, decisions of the Hearing Committee, and not impeding athletes’ ability to participate in international competitions, as protected under the Ted Stevens Act.
USEF will continue its commitment to national and international endurance sport and will appoint a special task force to oversee the development of the necessary mechanisms to fulfill the needs of endurance. Additionally, USEF is encouraged by the creation of the FEI Temporary Endurance Committee and looks forward to their report and recommendations for the future of endurance. USEF acknowledges that there may be some challenges as a transitional plan is put in place and will work to ensure minimal impact. Please email usefendurance@ usef.org with questions or concerns.

“Rodear is a point and time event wherein the stock savvy and skill of the dog, rider and horse are put to the test. The competition centers around maneuvering a small group of cattle through a number of obstacles in a set amount of time. dogs are utilized in everyday cattle operations on working cattle ranches. And, since most cattle operations take care not to harass and "run the weight" off their cattle, the Rodear places a great deal of emphasis on the stockmanship of the handler and the quiet and controlled manner in which the dog maneuvers the cattle. The event is unique from other cow dog competitions in that the majority of the obstacles require both the dog and horse/rider to negotiate. For this reason, use of the horse is not restricted in any way. With the handler on horseback, Rodear provides a great place for individuals to enjoy their good cow horses and work their good cow dogs through courses that either take place in an arena or cross country, or both! This concept of truly utilizing the horse has made the Rodear event attractive to the ranching and western performance horse industries. This fast growing sport originated out west with the first major Rodear taking place in conjunction with a National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) cutting in Fort Klamath, Oregon. Today, Rodears are gaining popularity across the United States, with clinics and competitions being held from California to Wyoming to New York and Texas. The Rodear ultimately brings together the cow dog and the cow horse in a forum designed to capitalize on the stock sense and maneuverability shared by both. With minimal rules governing the competitions and great prize money, the main emphasis is on fun!” Stay tuned for more information on the Evening performance Night of the Equine, as well as the EXCA competition. The final round of the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo had plenty of tight competition at the Denver Coliseum, Jan. 27. In the bareback riding alone, the top six cowboys in the average were within 2.5 points of each other going into Round 3. The close competition wasn’t limited to bareback riding. Saddle bronc riding and bull riding’s top contenders were within a few points of each other and the timed events’ top riders were all within

half a second of each other in the aggregate. Bareback rider Clint Laye, 25, rallied from fifth place in the average heading to the final round to win in Denver with 252.5 points on three head. Laye, who placed third in the first round with an 86.5-point ride, was two points behind leader Garrett Shadbolt heading into the
final round.
“That's right where I want to be – in the middle of that because the tougher the competition is, the tougher you will ride,” Laye said. Fittingly, his final draw was Calgary Stampede’s Added Money, the same horse Richmond Champion won the first round on with an 88-point ride. As the final round approached, Laye knew he was in for a good ride.

“When I looked at the short-go horses, he was the one I wanted,” Laye said. “He’s just a big, stout horse, and I thought he would fit my style.” Laye’s 86.5-point ride in the final round put him in a three-way tie for second in the round with Tanner Aus and Cole Reiner. More importantly, that ride gave him the one-point difference he needed to win the coveted Denver buckle and $8,601 as he claimed the average with 252.5 points on three head. “This is my first rodeo of the year, so my confidence will be up,” Laye said. “It puts a good cushion in the bank to hit my winter run, and just having the Denver title means a lot to me.” Laye is no stranger to success, as he ranked 10th in the 2015 world standings when he placed in four rounds at his first Wrangler NFR. This was his fifth time competing in Denver since joining the PRCA in 2012. “It’s one rodeo I’ve dang-sure wanted to win for a long time,” Laye said. “At this level of rodeo where there is such great competition, all the cards have to fall in the right place, and they did for me this year.” As the dust settled in the Denver Coliseum, Laye hit the road for the San Angelo (Texas) Rodeo, which runs Feb. 1-15. Other winners at the $478,326 rodeo were all-around cowboy Rhen Richard ($3,226, tie-down roping and team roping); steer wrestler Ty Erickson (11.9 seconds on three head); team ropers Clay Smith/Jake Long (13.9 seconds on three head); saddle bronc rider Spencer Wright (254 points on three head); barrel racer Jennifer Sharp (45.89 seconds on three runs); and bull rider Brody Yeary (248.5 points on three head). Worlds Oldest Horse Dead at Fifty
Sadly, at 2pm on Thursday 8 October, Sue Burton and the staff at Remus Horse Sanctuary said their final goodbyes to Orchid, believed to be the oldest horse in the world. On Wednesday 7 October, Orchid was colicking and receiving round the clock care. She had a comfortable night but was colicking again on the Thursday morning. She continued to colic and we had no option but to prevent her suffering, and the difficult decision was made to put her to sleep. Orchid celebrated her 50th birthday in January 2015 and certainly knew her own mind. Staff reported that, “every morning she would bang on her stable door for her breakfast and not stop until she got what she wanted. As an occasional treat raspberries were a particular favourite as she could suck on them! Her original owners were not aware of her compromised dentition and her

need for extra care. Orchid arrived at Remus Horse Sanctuary in June 2014. Prior to this, she was used as a brood mare but was discarded when her usefulness ended. She had been badly beaten, kicked and starved of food and water. Her spirit was broken and she was ready to die. Remus Horse Sanctuary gave her love and hope and a reason to live.

Triple Crown winner Justify horse of the year at Eclipse Awards
Despite efforts to make the Eclipse Awards’ horseof-the-year balloting appear like more of a, well, horse race, in the end it was runaway for Justify. The 13th horse to win the Triple Crown won the award over Accelerate, who will be making his final career start Saturday in the $9 million Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park in Florida. Justify got 191 of the votes, compared to 54 for Accelerate and two for Monomoy Girl. Justify was retired after winning the Belmont Stakes after only six races. “I want to thank Bob Baffert for being the trainer, he’s starting to get this Triple Crown down,” said Kenny Troutt, WinStar Farm owner. “I also want to thank [jockey] Mike Smith for all the things he did for us, running through the dirt and the mud and everything.” While Justify was the big winner, Joe Harper, president and chief executive officer of Del Mar, was the highlight after winning the Eclipse Award of Merit. Harper spent most of his speech thanking everyone, by name, who worked at Del Mar and then launched into what was likely a goodnatured series of jabs at Santa Anita. “It just dawned on me, half of those guys [who work at Del Mar] got fired from Santa Anita,” Harper said. “All you race track managers out there, if you need some talented people, just go down to the Arcadia unemployment office. They are all there, racing secretaries, race callers.” Harper then, in an aside, told Tim Ritvo, the Stronach Group chief operating officer, that he was kidding. Before the start of the current Santa Anita meeting, Ritvo made two controversial moves firing longtime racing secretary Rick Hammerle and race caller Michael Wrona. The awards, presented Thursday night at Gulfstream, was a testament to California racing, winning eight of the 17 awards given to horses, trainers, jockeys, owners and breeders. In addition to winning horse of the year, Justify was the unanimous selection for 3-year-old male. It was the only unanimous selection. Despite having the highest win (34%) and in-the-money (59%) percentage of the top 10 U.S trainers, Baffert finished second to Chad Brown for the Eclipse Award for trainer. Brown (859) had more than twice the number of starters as Baffert (348). Hronis Racing won by a large margin in the Eclipse for top owners. Kosta and Pete Hronis got 142 first-place votes, compared to Peter Brant’s 27. The Hronis brothers, who live in the Central Valley, own Accelerate, who did win an Eclipse for older dirt male, by 245-2, over Gun Runner, who retired last January. 90

Madison Shambaugh
aka Mustang Maddy in AZ
Nationwide clinician and wild horse advocate Mustang Maddy is bringing the magic of mustangs—and zebras— to Arizona animal lovers at 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 9th. At just 25 years old, Madison Shambaugh—better known as Mustang Maddy—has risen to horseindustry acclaim for her innovative training methods and imaginative performances with her unique team of mustangs. A viral video star and training competition champion, Maddy travels the country to share her horses’ stories and raise awareness for the plight of the American Mustang. The Meet the Mustangs event, held at Daisy Mountain Ranch, illustrates the story and struggle of America’s wild horses via an entertaining demonstration of skill and communication between Maddy and her team of mustangs. The event also includes education about the unique differences between domesticated horses, mustangs and zebras; attendees will also come face-to-face with these wild horses in a post-performance meet-and-greet session featuring both mustangs and zebras. Tickets for the performance are $5 for children and $20 for adults; they’re available at https:// www.mustangmaddy.com/meet-themustangs/. Crowds will be wowed as Maddy and her team of wild horses exhibit the powerful connection between horses and humans in a demonstration of liberty training, which involves riding and maneuvers performed without leads or ropes, in a dramatic musical performance. This style of training celebrates the great possibilities available in human’s relationships with horses, Maddy says. “Liberty is a way of communicating with equines that is similar to how herds move and communicate naturally together,” she explained. “It is about becoming highly sensitive to our nonverbal communication and our energy, which is somewhat becoming a lost art! Horses are naturally interested in things like unity, harmony, and working together. Liberty embodies each of these elements. We constantly ask them to be a part of our world by jumping higher, spinning harder, and running faster; but liberty is a way that the human enters their world; the horse world.” 92
FEBRUARY 2019
The show’s stars include Amira, a 9-year-old mustang with just a couple years out of the wild. The newest member of the herd, Amira was Maddy’s partner for the January 2017 Mustang Magic Trainers’ Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, where the duo brought the crowds to tears and to their feet by performing bareback and bridleless—without any equipment— to the soundtrack of Disney’s “Cinderella;” footage of Maddy’s performance has gone viral, garnering nearly 7 million views online. Using her “5 Golden Rules” of training, Maddy developed an incredible bond with her new charge—riding Amira before ever using any halter or rope. Stealing the show, though, are plucky zebras Zena and Zeus. Possibly the world’s first liberty zebra team, the two demonstrate what many might believe is impossible. “Most horsemen would agree that zebras—an undomesticated species— are untrainable, but that’s not true,” Maddy said. “With understanding of their nature and pushing beyond what’s perceived to be possible, we can accomplish anything; I hope that’s a message that rings true both in and out of the horse world.” Maddy also documents her personal journey in the Academy Membership, a subscription-based membership which features the real, raw ups and downs of training horses and provides members with live training footage and questionand-answer sessions with Madison. Learn more at https://www. mustangmaddy.com/membership/. Maddy’s foundational online course, The 5 Golden Rules of Horse-Human Communication is now available at https://mustangmaddyacademy.com/p/ the-5-golden-rules-to-horse-humanconnection. Whether attending in person or watching online, audiences are sure to be inspired by the story of Madison’s mustangs and the lessons these wild continued on page 96

A professional bull rider died after he fell during a rodeo competition in Denver and a bull stomped on his chest, the Professional Bull Riders Association said. Mason Lowe, 25, of Exeter, Missouri, was injured Tuesday night during the PBR Chute Out at the National Western Stock Show. As Lowe was riding a bull named Hard Times and tried to stay atop, he was pulled under the bull and the animal's left hind hoof struck his chest, Professional Bull Riders President & CEO Sean Gleason told reporters on Wednesday. Lowe, who was wearing a protective vest, suffered a massive chest injury and damage to his heart. He was taken to a hospital, where he died, Gleason said. "The entire PBR and National Western sports family extends our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to Mason's wife Abbey and his family," Gleason tweeted early Wednesday morning. Lowe was ranked 18th in the world. He had been a professional bull rider for seven years and so far, he had earned nearly $10,000 this season, according to the PBR website. Paul Andrews, National Western Stock Show President and CEO, also expressed his condolences. "Our entire rodeo family and every member of the Stock Show community is saddened by the loss of bull rider Mason Lowe," Andrews said in a statement. "Our hearts and thoughts are with the Lowe family, his fellow bull riders and the entire PBR organization." Gleason also noted that the bull Lowe was riding Tuesday will continue in competition during the reminder of the National Western Stock Show. CNN's Dave Alsup contributed to this report.

Angelina Jolie, Taylor Sheridan Team for Thriller 'Those Who Wish Me Dead' YELLOWSTO
NE PRODUC
ER
Angelina Jolie is teaming up with Hell or High Water scribe Taylor Sheridan for an original thriller titled Those Who Wish Me Dead.
Jolie would star while Sheridan, who wrote the script, will direct, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Bron Studios, which was involved in recent movies such as The Mule, Assassination Nation and A Simple Favor, is producing. Also producing are Steven Zaillian (Moneyball, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) and Garrett Basch via their Film Rites banner. The project adapts a book by Michael Koryta, but sources say the feature will veer away from certain points. The novel told of a teen in a witness protection program hiding out from a pair of killers in a wilderness skills program while a fire engulfs Montana. Sheridan’s script is described as being female-driven (the book’s female lead ran a fire lookout tower before being swept into the teen’s troubled life) and a by-the-seat-ofyour-pants chase movie. CAA Media Finance arranged the financing. Sheridan was an actor who segued to writing, making a name for himself by penning acclaimed gritty thrillers such as Sicario and Hell or High Water, for which he garnered an Oscar nomination. He made his directorial debut with Wind River, a thriller starring Jeremy Renner. Sheridan also created the Kevin Costner drama series Yellowstone. The plan is for him to shoot Those Who Wish Me Dead after wrapping up the second season of the Paramount Network show. Sheridan was gearing up to shoot a black-ops thriller titled F.A.S.T. that was to have starred Chris Pratt and to have gone into production this summer, but switched gears at the last minute. 100

Arizona Fine Art EXPO Features Acclaimed Western Artists
Cowboys riding on the ranch, wild horses cooling off in the river, Native Americans preparing for a ceremonial dance, rodeo competitors holding on to bucking bulls – all of this is happening on the southwest corner of Jomax and Scottsdale roads…coming to life on canvas and through sculpture at the Arizona Fine Art EXPO.
Now in its 15th year, the Arizona Fine Art EXPO runs daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Sunday, March 24 under the “festive white tents” at 26540 N. Scottsdale Rd., next to MacDonald’s Ranch. The event features 124 patronfriendly artist studios within a 44,000 square-foot space, where guests have a rare chance to meet the artists, see them in action, and learn about their passion, inspiration and techniques. The event has come to be known as Arizona's premier venue for collecting western fine art.
“We’re very proud of our roster of acclaimed western artists who are participating in our show,” said Judi Combs, co-founder of the Arizona Fine Art EXPO. “We feature both contemporary and western art, but over the years, we’ve added more award-winning western artists, and collectors have taken note of that.” Some of the artists grew up on ranches, like Cave Creek painter Marless Fellows, who is passionate about painting people, horses, donkeys and other wildlife. Fellows grew up on a small horse ranch in Apache Junction, where she developed her love for the West and her western lifestyle. She considers herself a colorist with her style being representational. “With all of my subjects, the eyes tell an amazing story,” Fellows said. Monte M. Moore traveled from Colorado to participate in Arizona Fine Art EXPO for his second year. He grew up on a 30,000-acre ranch
in Idaho in a family of cowboys, and while he uses airbrush, oils, acrylics, and watercolor to capture the spirit of the west, some of his work is also fantastical. “I have done work for Marvel, Lucasfilm and many other notable entertainment companies, but I’ve gotten back to my western roots,” Moore said, adding that he is exhibiting a combination of western and pop culture mixed media pieces. When Paul Jones’ service with the Air Force brought him to South Dakota, there was no turning back. “I, too, have ridden the trails of the west and sat at many a cowboy fire,” Jones said. “I’ve ridden many seasons in Yellowstone with cowboy ‘Bullwhip Bob’ and in the Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming and Arizona. But the others are the real cowboys; I’m basically a country-casual boy.” He and his wife, Cheryl, traveled continuously for over eight years in their bus conversion the ‘Wandering

Star.’ Jones considered the voyage his chrysalis for transforming from photographer to canvas artist. In addition to receiving accolades for his western paintings, he has been commissioned to paint personal portraits of many high-profile officials and celebrities, including Lady Margaret Thatcher, Colin Powell, President George W. Bush, Dan Quayle, F.W. de Klerk, Carl Sagan, Kevin Costner, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, and many others. “Arizona Fine Art EXPO also features many talented sculptors, pencil artists, wildlife artists, and other painters and mixed media artists who are passionate about our western lifestyle and heritage,” Combs said. Season passes cost $10; season passes for seniors and military are $8; and children under 12 are free. Parking is free. For details, call (480) 837-7163 or visit www. ArizonaFineArtEXPO.com.

Dick Gaines, 1943–2019
Dick Gaines, 75, Byers, Tex., past president of the National Cutting Horse Association, passed away after an extended illness, on Tuesday. January 15.
As a past president of the NCHA and a longtime director, Gaines’ contribution to the growth of the association was incalculable. In 2005, Gaines became, and still remains, the only person to be inducted into three of NCHA’s
Halls of Fame. He was inducted into the NCHA Non-Pro Hall of Fame in 1980, the NCHA Riders Hall of Fame in 1992, and the NCHA Members Hall of Fame in 2005.
Admittance to the NCHA Non-Pro and Riders Halls of Fame is based on performance; however, cutters are nominated by their peers for the NCHA Members Hall of Fame, in consideration of their lasting contributions to the sport. Being held in such high esteem by his peers, Gaines said, was what made his Members Hall of Fame induction so special. In addition to his tireless efforts and dedication on behalf of the National Cutting Horse Association, Gaines rode and bred some of the cutting industry’s finest horses. He won the 1978 NCHA Non-Pro World Championship in 1978 riding Sally Doc, but before that, in 1973, he was reserve champion of the NCHA NonPro Futurity on Doc Tari, one of the most significant horses in his life. In 1980, Gaines won the NCHA NonPro Derby riding Doc Tari’s daughter Barbi Tari and, in 1981, three of the NCHA Futurity Open finalists were Doc Tari offspring, including the reserve champion Chick Tari. Doc Tari would go on to become one of cutting’s all-time leading sires and grandsires. In 1982, Dick Gaines was one of eight cutting horse stallion owners who formed the Super Syndicate, which resulted in the initiation of the NCHA Super Stakes, one of today’s famous Triple Crown cutting events.
102
FEBRUARY 2019
From 1989 through 1992, Zack T Wood, a Doc Tari son bred by Dick Gaines, carried both Dick and his son Matt to win major NCHA championships; the story came full circle in 2001, when Matt, an NCHA Riders Hall of Fame Member, showed Nu I Wood, by Zack T Wood, to win the NCHA Open Derby. Nu I Wood, in turn, produced Special Nu Baby, who Matt rode to win the 2015 NCHA Open World Championship. Dick Gaines came down to watch his son’s final ride for the championship from the seat of the John Deere tractor used to groom the arena floor.

Truck Talk with Nate Brekken February Tip of the Month
By Nate Brekken
Cold Start Ups
It’s still chilly in the morning! We can enjoy it while it lasts. One thing has never changed with a diesel engine, at idle, they use more air than fuel during a cold engine startup. Your diesel engine uses (depending on make) glow plugs, intake air heaters, or a mix of both to help aid in starting in the morning or during cold ambient temperature startups. These starting aids also help with another area of you truck – tail pipe emissions are improved by increasing intake air temperatures. The hotter the incoming air flow is to the cylinder, before it ignites, the cleaner the burn.

These “starting aids” do not run all the time. There are exceptions, but usually after two minutes of Nate Brekken idle time these heaters are shut off. Once these heaters “starting aids” are shut off, the cylinder temperature cools down due to all the incoming air drawn in and the small amount of fuel used to keep the truck at idle. If you’re going to run extended idle times when cold, be sure to have an elevated idle. Some trucks, if cold enough, will have this enabled automatically after a certain amount of idle time is achieved. Older trucks will have to have something built in, or a brick on the pedal (NOT recommended). This way the engine will build heat more efficiently than if at idle.

Mauney to ride with broken leg
Two-time World Champion J.B. Mauney has seemingly never stopped battling through various injuries during his 14-year career, so it is not a surprise that the 32-year-old now expects to ride with a broken left leg. Mauney told PBR.com on Tuesday morning that X-rays at Davis Regional Medical Center in Statesville, North Carolina, confirmed he has broken his fibula. However, Mauney says that it will not stop him from competing at the upcoming Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo on Wednesday and Thursday
night before heading to Oklahoma City for the PBR’s Unleash The Beast Express Ranches Invitational. “I will be at all of them,” Mauney said confidently. “Besides the fact that it is going to hurt like hell, it should be alright.” Mauney said he would meet with Dr. Tandy Freeman in Fort Worth on Wednesday so that Freeman can review the X-ray and partially cast Mauney’s leg. The 13-time PBR World Finalist added that he and Freeman discussed the possibility of casting his leg in Fort Worth after
Freeman told Mauney in Sacramento, California, Sunday that he likely broke his leg when Hou’s Bad News stomped on him following his 88-point ride. “I will take the X-rays to him at the rodeo in Fort Worth,” Mauney said. “I asked him before I left Sacramento if he will have stuff to cast it and he said, ‘Yeah.’ “It won’t go all the way around the leg. It will be like a half cast with a bunch of padding on the edge and then I will tape it to my leg.”Mauney, who is the alternate rider for the Team

USA Eagles for the upcoming Global Cup in Arlington, Texas, said he was informed that he broke his fibula, which is the long, thin outside bone of the lower leg, while at the hospital early Tuesday morning. He decided to get the X-rays done around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday after his newborn son, Jagger Briggs, was headed back to sleep. “I woke up at about midnight and he finished feeding so I said, ‘Shit. I should go into the hospital now when nobody is here.’ I got there about 1:30 and I said, ‘Look, I just need the X-rays. Give me the disc and I will be out of y’all’s hair. “They showed me the X-ray. It wasn’t completely broke in two, but it was pretty close. (The fracture) is probably about 3 or 4 inches below the knee.” Mauney is 4-for-10 this season through four UTB events and is No. 56 in the world standings. He had just posted his best ride of the season before Hou's Bad News ran him down from behind as he tried to escape to safety. According to Mauney, he has previously broken his right leg and was able to ride with a cast for three to four weeks. Mauney has been most recently riding with a right wrist injury and has overcome a laundry list of injuries in his career. He battled back from careerthreatening right shoulder surgery in 2017 and then a broken back and torn groin last season. None of those injuries has prevented Mauney from qualifying for the PBR World Finals. In fact, no injury has ever stopped Mauney from qualifying to ride at the PBR’s season-ending marquee event. Mauney leads all active riders with 13 consecutive World Finals qualifications.

THIS IS HORSE COUNTRY AT ITS BEST Wild Horse Country Located in southern Colorado, in the
Sangre de Christo mountain range. You will experience beautiful scenic views as you climb from the floor of the San Luis Valley to the top of the mesa. As you leave the small community of San Luis you will enter into a section of the west that is still “open range” (no fences) where it is common to find bands of wild horses, sometimes grazing along the highway that leads to Taos, New Mexico. Through out the area horses are found where ever they choose to wander. Additional wildlife; deer, elk, and bear abound. With the privacy afforded by few neighbors and large parcels, this is truly a great place to live free, in the western way.

Dressage Team for many years and her numerous contributions to the sport of dressage on the international stage and at home in the U.S. make her an impressive force in the sport of dressage.
2018 was a record-breaking year for Graves and her and Curt Maes’s 16-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding Verdades (Florett AS x Liwilarda/Goya). Not only did the combination contribute to The Dutta Corp. U.S. Dressage Team’s silver medal at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ (WEG) Tryon 2018 but also made history in the Grand Prix Special as the first American combination to earn an individual silver medal at a world championship. Their success at the WEG boosted Graves and Verdades to the numberone spot on the FEI Dressage World Ranking List in October, marking the first time a U.S. dressage combination has been ranked as world number one. "I come from a family of athletes, and it wasn’t until I settled into equestrian sport that I really became comfortable with myself. If it weren’t for the family I found in equestrian sport, I would be just an uncoordinated awkward girl without very many friends, so thank you all for being my friends," said Graves. "There are so many people who make this world turn for me, many who are here tonight: I have my amazing family, Betsy Juliano, Debbie McDonald, my amazing teammates, my vets and farriers. But it’s honestly a bigger community than my little world that turns. It’s all of you who are members, all of you who support equestrian sport, whether it be dressage, jumping, or whatever your sport is, our connection to the horse unites us all.”

Agriculture Can Do the Job
By John Schlageck
Farmers and ranchers are under increasing pressure to produce more food to feed the world while improving their stewardship of critical land and water resources. Today’s farmers are increasing the amount of organic matter in the soil. With no-till and reduced tillage farming, farmers continue to build organic matter and improve the soil tilth. Today’s modern farmer is not exhausting the land. Just the opposite is true. Without question, scarce water is always a concern, especially in Midwestern states where rainfall is limited and people use plenty of it. Farmers constantly chart rainfall amounts and monitor weather conditions. At the same time, the world’s population is exploding. Some say the greatest growth in the history of our world is underway. The current world population of 7.3 billion is expected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion by 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100. Most of these people will be born in parts
of the world with less capacity for agricultural production. As a result, pressure on the world’s natural resources for food production will become intense. This demand for food will mean opportunity for farming and ranching, and there is nothing to suggest yields will not keep up with population growth. Even countries with marginal soil and more severe climates than our own are growing crops today. We have better yield potential and greater food value today than ever before. With new genetics and technologies coming on line, there is no reason to believe the world won’t be able to feed itself in the future. American agriculture is up to the task. This country can continue producing food for the world. U.S. farmers and ranchers can compete with other nations if they aren’t shackled by government regulations that cause production costs to soar and trade tariffs that continue to push some out of business. Winston Churchill said many years ago, “Give us the tools and we will get the job done.” The same can be said today for agriculture in this country.
