AQHA Executive Committee Meeting Updates AQHA Executive Vice President Craig Huffhines shares highlights from the recent AQHA Executive Committee meeting.

important decisions and governing AQHA between the annual meetings of the membership and the board. We welcomed our five-person AQHA Executive Committee to Amarillo at the end of January for several productive and jam-packed days of discussion. My sincere thanks to our five volunteer leaders for their sacrifices of time and energy toward the betterment of our Association. We got a lot of great work done and set the foundation for many of the discussions we’ll continue at the AQHA convention in March. Here are a few updates from last week’s meetings: The Ranching Heritage Challenge Finals will be held in conjunction with the Zoetis AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championships in March at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. This year, the combined number of qualifiers for the VRH Championships has increased from just more than 400 last year to more than 1,000 this year. A communication plan was formulated to encourage exhibitor participation and to handle the potential additional numbers that will maximize Houston’s equestrian facility. The Executive Committee approved the 255 judges who passed the Versatility Ranch Horse judges classes. The Executive Committee approved the 2017 qualifying points for each class of the 2017 Lucas Oil

AQHA World Championship Show. Hired third-party consultants to continue to enhance our IT initiatives with Web properties and data mining. The American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame Subcommittee ballot of horses, people and legends was approved for the Hall of Fame Committee’s convention meeting. Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa, was approved for the site of the 2017 AQHA Bank of America Racing Challenge Championships. Welcomed Anna Morrison as the new chief international officer and received an overview of her plan for her first 90 days. The 2017 Latin American Championships was cancelled for 2017 and tabled until a more inclusive plan for Latin American members can be developed. All of the agendas for the upcoming convention were reviewed and will be available next week at www.aqha. com/convention. A review of Phase 1 of the research completed toward future planning for the youth department was given by the youth development staff. An update on departmental progress on the Strategic Operating Plan was given by our team of chief officers and their staff. As I mentioned, many of these conversations will continue at the AQHA convention in March, so be sure to register soon and secure your hotel rooms before they’re gone. I’m eager to speak with all of you in San Antonio!

Mickey Free and His Big, Bad Mammoth Jack It would make sense that the mixed-breed captivo, Mickey Free, would choose a sure-footed, fearless, intelligent and trusted companion: the big, bad mammoth Jack which he calls Tú, which is Spanish for “You.” Now, some frontiersmen ride mules (that would be a John or a Molly) but Mickey prefers a straight-up Jack stud. Needless to say, they both get in a lot of trouble.
“There is nothing to be learned from the second kick of a mule.” —Old Mule Skinner Saying

Mickey’s Mule Just Keeps Going And Going “The mule is an enduring animal, he will bear fatigue and cold, and heat and hunger, and abuse. The greater the hardship, the more patient he becomes. But no man can trust a mule” —Lieutenant Joseph Sladen, Remarking in horror at General Howard’s choice of mounts on their peace mission to meet Cohise
A Voice That Is His Own Derision “Father and mother he does not resemble, sons and daughters he will never have; vindictive and patient (it is a known fact that he will labor ten years willingly and patiently for you, for the privilege of kicking you once); solitary but without pride, self-sufficient but without vanity; his voice is his own derision.” —William Faulkner
Too Smart for Rodeo? Ever wonder why you never see mules in the bucking chutes at a rodeo? According to my mule-savvy friend, Raymond Isenberg, a mule won’t always come out bucking. He may come out and make a lap around the arena and then stop to look at everything. Or, he may run and twist trying to dislodge his rider, but he rarely will buck in the classic bareback rider form that horses do all day long. Now, this same mule may be “broke” to ride and two years later, on some lonely trail, decide to put on a first class rodeo buck-a-thon, but that is the mule’s prerogative. They are too smart to just start bucking on command, like horses do. As R.P.S. Brown put it, “The horse is a noble animal who performs his service with grace. A mule will wait his whole life for the opportunity to kill a man.”

Pain relief for your horse. Neprofin is a revolutionary new pain treatment for the alleviation of lameness in horses. Originally formulated to work on the same scientific principles as NSAID’s and phenylbutazone (bute), these enzymes have since proven effective on sprains, fractures, rheumatoid arthritis and osterarthritis. Neprofin assists with tissue repair, reduces fluid formation, accelerates the healing process and can be adopted as a replacement therapy in pathological conditions.
USE NEPROFIN FOR:
Improved energy levels Inflammation, pain and muscle soreness Sprains, fractures, arthritic conditions Accelerated healing Great for household pets too

This mare has an old injury to the lateral side of her right front cannon bone, with deep scarring. There was extensive soft tissue damage which restricted her movement, causing a shortness of stride. This image shows visible enlargement of the soft tissue injury by its heat signature from recurrent inflammation. Note that the right leg is visibly larger than the left leg.
Following 8 weeks of Neprofin administration, this mare showed a marked improvement. Heat signatures have returned to normal, showing virtually no signs of inflammation or pain. Neprofin was able to digest and eliminate the inflamed scar tissue mass, which had caused lameness and a shortened stride. Note that both legs are now identical in size and shape. The mare is now sound and bears weight evenly on both front legs.

I’ll tell you what….. I’m entered up… You bet your ass I am…. Every night to be exact…. You see, I use to rope a little back in the day, and I’m trying to get back at it… I’m even keeping a rope in my truck at all times, just so I can throw it at stupid things like, trash cans! Hock Two-ieee…. COWWWWBOYYYY…. Actually, I’m looking for a good heeler if you know of one… Where??? Florence!! of morphine that can be enough to trigger a positive. The forbidden substance eugenol occurs naturally in such foods as licorice, cloves, vanilla, nutmeg, and celery. Not sure about your treats? Call the Equine Drugs and Medications Program at 1-800-633-2472, give them the complete list of ingredients,
and they’ll check it out. “We don’t want to discourage people from doing this for their horses, but you have to be careful,” said Schumacher. “We’d rather educate than adjudicate! No question is too silly to ask—just give us a call. If you submit a list, we can look at the individual ingredients and respond back to you. Why Advertising?
We always appreciate your feedback and will continue to make strides to have the website be as functional and comfortable as the old one was for our users. The old NCHA website was built in 1999 when most everyone’s web experience was new. Think about what your cell looked like in 1999. One of the important new features our organization now has available on the new platform is the ability to deliver targeted advertising for our sponsors and partners. As done for listeners and viewers on television and radio paid advertising allows them to deliver free programming. This works because it helps pay for the very existence of the outlet. Otherwise, in order to simply exist, these outlets would need to charge their audience. This is why other media outlets such as SiriusXM or HBO don’t need advertising; because they charge their audience to have the privilege of receiving them. In the case of NCHA, the ads on the new website will help to pay for over 120 days of annual free live event web-broadcasts, such as the Triple Crown, the National Championships, and the Mercuria World Finals and World Series of Cutting events. The new NCHAcutting.com website advertising also contributes to the overall NCHA financials. The moneys accumulated from selling advertising also aids in the continuation of the highest percentages of entry fees going to purses, along with awards and recognition, in the equine industry.

With Chris Pine and Ben Foster as bank-robbing brothers and Jeff Bridges as the Texas Ranger on their tail, David Mackenzie’s “Hell or High Water” (Lionsgate/ CBS Films) debuted at Cannes to critics’ raves. And as of October 3, the contemporary heist western passed “The Witch” to become the highest-grossing independent film of the year, with $25.8 million in the till and counting.
“Hell or High Water” is the result of that increasingly rare invention: an original screenplay. It sprang from the mind of Taylor Sheridan, a Texas-born former actor who, in the tradition of “The Last Picture Show” and “Hud” author Larry McMurtry (another Texan whose stories fueled some great Hollywood movies), set his story in the Lone Star State. Taylor Sheridan and his Sheridan wrote “Hell or High Water” wife Nicole at the Oscars after his first script, “Sicario,” but “Hell or High Water” sold first. “Sicario” was “toxic,” he said; among other things, it had a female lead. “I wrote the Spanish dialogue without subtitles,” he said. “It was dark, the act structure didn’t make sense, nobody wanted to make a movie about cartels.” Eventually producer Basil Iwanyk (“The Town”) sent “Sicario” to director Denis Villeneuve; the rest is history (three Oscar nominations, $78.5 million worldwide). Sheridan sees both films as part of a trilogy of “the modern-day American frontier,” he said, “about how much has changed in 100 years, and how much things haven’t. What are the consequences of decisions and actions that are a century old and today? I was exploring the death of a way of life, and the acute consequences of the mortgage crisis in East Texas.” Taylor’s new movie for 2017 is Wind River. Wind River is a thriller directed and written by Taylor Sheridan in his directing debut. It stars Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Jon Bernthal and Kelsey Asbille. It premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. Premise U.S. Fish & Wildlife agent Cory Lambert (Renner) discovers a body in the rugged wilderness of the Wind River Indian Reservation. The FBI sends in rookie agent Jane Banner (Olsen), but she’s unprepared for the difficulties created by the oppressive weather and isolation of the Wyoming winter. When she employs Cory as a tracker, the two venture deep into a world ravaged by violence and the elements.

DOES GETTING OLDER HAVE TO FEEL LIKE THIS? As our bodies age, the amount of testosterone produced decreases, resulting in a number of symptoms, including: brain fog, anxiety, irritability, depression, loss of muscle, fatigue, inflammation, weight gain, memory loss, insomnia, low libido and low energy. Although many physicians simply dismiss these symptoms as part of the aging process, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) can be used to treat and even reverse these symptoms by restoring your hormone levels to normal ranges.
IS IT RIGHT FOR ME?
A simple blood test can help confir whether BHRT can help you regain your health and vitality. Once your hormone levels are determined, we can identify the amount of testosterone your body needs and address the benefits and risks of BHRT for your situation.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
While traditional hormone therapy has been around for a long time, BHRT pellet implantation is the most convenient, efficient method available. With BHRT, pellets of compressed hormone powder are inserted under your skin, providing a steady dose of bio-identical hormones directly into the bloodstream via circulation. This regulated delivery mimics your body’s natural processes and avoids the roller coaster-like actuation of hormones experienced with oral hormone pills or topical creams. Patients receiving BHRT can expect to feel relief from symptoms as early as one week after implantation, and each pellet lasts for 3 to 6 months.
IS IT SAFE?
Yes, bio-identical hormones are a safer alternative than traditional synthetic hormones. Why? When developing synthetic hormones, pharmaceutical companies intentionally alter the molecular structure of the hormones so they can patent the product. By contrast, bio-identical hormones are molecularly identical to hormones produced naturally by your body, making BHRT the safest, most natural way to manage hormone deficiencies. The side effects of bio-identical hormones are mild and easily managed by dose adjustment. BHRT may also offer long-term health benefits; bio-identical hormones restore the protective benefits originally provided by your naturally occurring hormones, such as a reduced risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and breast cancer.
BRT IN WOMEN?
Conventional wisdom has designated testosterone a “male” hormone, but in reality, a woman’s physiologic health is dependent on a steady supply of testosterone. In fact at a woman’s reproductive peak, she produces more testosterone than estrogen. As women age, however, their testosterone levels begin to decline. Because females are more sensitive to testosterone, a small drop in testosterone can have serious effects on a woman’s health, including increased in ammation and body fat, low libido, lethargy, a decrease in muscle mass and bone density, and problems regulating body temperature. BHRT can help reverse these menopausal symptoms and improve a woman’s quality of life.
BRT IN MEN?
Beginning at age 30, a man’s body makes less testosterone. By age 50, many men experience a significant drop in testosterone known as “andropause” or male menopause. With this drop, many men begin to experience clear signs of low testosterone, such as decreased sex drive and erectile dysfunction. Low testosterone can also cause an increase in abdominal fat, anemia, and in ammation, and a decline in muscle mass and bone density. These symptoms can be treated and even eliminated by normalizing testosterone levels. In addition, despite the claim that increased testosterone makes men angry or violent, testosterone has actually been shown to improve friendliness by decreasing irritability, nervousness, and fatigue.

Fort Worth, Texas—The legendary Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo has been a tradition in Texas for 120 years. With a huge committee purse, and high entry limits, the rodeo itself is one of the “bucket list” victories for rodeo competitors, one everyone wants to be able to claim. That fact is even more true for Texas cowboys and cowgirls. 2014 WPRA World Champion Fallon Taylor does not live in Fort Worth but she grew up and still lives nearby, making the FWSSR about as close to being a hometown rodeo as she can get. Taylor practically grew up in a rodeo arena, making four appearances at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) as a young girl back in the 1990’s. Though the FWSSR had been going strong for nearly a century when Taylor starting running barrels professionally, it was not a stop for the ladies of the WPRA until 2004. By then, Taylor had moved on to other pursuits, such as acting and modeling. When she returned to her first passion—the sport of rodeo—Taylor found her way to the pay window at the Stock Show often but had never claimed the ultimate prize here until 2017. Using a phenomenal second round victory, Taylor came into the Championship Round on Saturday night, February 4 with nearly two tenths of a second lead over her closest competitors in what was otherwise an extremely tight race from top to bottom. The FWSSR hosts 29 performances of pro rodeo action including many days with two- and three-perfs a day. The WPRA barrel race began with 210 entries; following the first go round, the fastest 70 came back for a progressive second go round which concluded on Saturday afternoon just hours before the Championship Finals. WPRA World leader Tiany Schuster was one of two cowgirls to use that Saturday afternoon to vault into the finals. Schuster punched her ticket with 16.61 second effort that was good enough for sixth in the go. Much more dramatically, Oregon cowgirl Amberleigh Moore advanced despite a scary accident on her second run on Saturday afternoon. After completing her three turns inside Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum, Moore’s cinch broke as she ran her mare Paige

toward the alley. Just after crossing the line, Moore hit the dirt hard and lay motionless inside the arena. She was taken out on a back board to be evaluated by the Justin Sports Medicine Team. Incredibly, Moore had run fast enough to earn a spot into the Championship Finals; even more amazing, she suffered no major injury in the fall and—after another visit with JSM—was able to compete in the final round. Because the FWSSR takes the time to hand rake the ground after each runner throughout the performances, the Finals are run from the slowest qualifier down to the fastest, allowing the drama of the Championship race to build with each lady. Multiple WNFR qualifier Kelly Yates led the ladies off on Saturday night, riding a daughter of the famous Firewater Fiesta, the horse which carried Yates to her most recent trips to Las Vegas. Yates posted a smooth 16.82 to lead the way, setting the tone for the tight race to follow. Texas cowgirl Brooke Rix continued her hot streak, posting a 16.57 as the second barrel racer to compete. The time would hold up through tough challenges from WNFR cowgirls Jane Melby and Kimmie Wall before falling to second after Schuster’s lightning fast 16.45 second scamper through the pattern. Schuster’s time was so fast, she went to the lead in the average as well as she held off the WNFR competitors who followed her: Tammy Fischer, Amberleigh Moore, Cayla Small and Stevi Hillman. Taylor won more than $16,000 while in Fort Worth. Grimes meanwhile pocketed nearly $13,000. 1

Greeting from Australia, or as they say here, G’day. I’m back in Australia doing some clinics, and once again no matter what level a horse and rider are at, I find that going back to the basics is what solves any issue. I first became aware of this phenomenon back in the 90’s. I had a 4-year-old stud that I had trained to do the reining, and although he could slide quite well, and the hind end worked quite well, the front end was stiff and his head stuck up in the air. I had done everything I knew of to fix the issue to no avail. I went to a clinic with Dell Hendricks and couldn’t wait for the stopping part. But first we had to work on the guiding, and the spinning etc. But finally, the last session on the last day we started to work the stop. But first he wanted me to work on my fencing, and I found myself revisiting some of the guiding techniques we had worked on the previous day. Once we used those guiding techniques to get him running
Shillin’ Out with Warwick Schiller
straight, at slow, medium, and fast speeds, Dell said “Now run him down there and say whoa and see what happens”. I thought to myself this is the moment I came here for, forget all that guiding and circling and stuff, I want to fix the front end in the stop. So I did. I ran down there and said whoa. It was the best stop he’d ever done, by far. Not only did the hind end work great, he hung his head down like he was asleep and his front feet pedaled like he was in the Tour De France. I was astounded. Dell looked at me and said “What’s wrong with that ?” “Nothing”, I replied “but he’s never done a stop like that before.” It was then I realized that I had taught the horse to stop perfectly well, and that I just hadn’t taught
him to run straight. At the time it was about straight, but as time has gone on I have come to understand that it’s not about straight, it’s about basics. The basics are the foundation of
everything that comes after that. Every person I meet around the world that does something at an elite level, when questioned, can always give me a quote on perfecting the basics. In New Zealand I had a female boxer in my clinic. She has been boxing for 7 years, and has represented her country in boxing. When I asked her for a boxing quote about basics she said one of the most used ones is “Basics wins fights.” She also quoted Bruce Lee when she said “ I don’t fear the man who knows 10,000 punches, I fear the man who has practiced 1 punch 10,000 times. We had an intern several years ago who had been highly involved in salsa dancing. So involved that she chose to go to college in Mexico to fully immerse herself in the salsa dance scene. When I asked her for a dance quote on basics she came out with
“Beginning dancers take intermediate lessons, and intermediate dancers take advanced lessons, but advanced dancers take beginning lessons.” I was doing a clinic in Canada one time and a young woman who was watching started knowingly nodding her head when I started the clinic talking about the importance of basics. I said to her “You seem to know what I’m talking about, let me guess, you are really good with horses ?” She replied that no, she wasn’t really that good with horses. I said “Well obviously you are really high level at something as you know what I’m talking about. What are you high level at?” She replied that she was an elite level snowboard coach at Whistler ski resort. The trouble with basics is they are easy to do averagely. If your basics are average, the big things will be nearly impossible, but if you can perfect the basics the big, seemingly impossible things, are easy. It’s almost as if perfecting the basics is a test of your mettle, a rite of passage, an asking of how bad do you want it ? Author George Leonard wrote “How do you best move towards mastery? To put it simply, you must practice diligently, but you practice primarily for the sake of practice itself. Rather than being frustrated while on the plateau, you learn to appreciate and enjoy it just as much as you do the upward surges . You need to learn to love the plateau”. Mastering the basics is the first plateau you need to endure, and if you find that difficult, it will only get harder. Learn to enjoy the process, and the results will follow.

APHA partner Kimes Ranch releases new styles for 2017
Paint Horse Journal Pro Team Sponsor Kimes Ranch Jeans is expanding their popular line of denim and apparel, and APHA’s excited to be along for the ride. Known for its premier denim that makes fit and function a priority, Kimes Ranch Jeans will
add four new denim styles as well as an expanded selection of hoodies, tees and hats. The denim line will expand by adding a sixth men’s style and three women’s styles. The “Wayne” is a straight-cut jean similar to existing men’s style “Cal,” but with a lower rise for all-day wear. “Betty 17,” “Bonnie” and “Bonnie Black” are forecasted to be new favorites among women. “Betty 17” has all of the features of the original “Betty”—as seen in the pages of Chrome—in a new tri-blend denim fabric. This new denim, currently seen in “Black Betty,” is softer than its original counterpart with a threeway stretch to prevent sagging from all-day wear. “Bonnie” and “Bonnie Black” are the first skinny jeans to be featured in the Kimes Ranch line. These jean styles will also feature the new tri-blend denim with more of a street feel. Founded in 2009, Kimes Ranch was created to fill a void in the marketplace. With a long-standing Western history, founders Matt and Amanda Kimes’ desire was to create a company that produced great fitting, quality, long-lasting jeans that walked the line between fashion-forward and traditional Western. “Denim is our core competency, and we are extremely pleased with the four new styles joining our signatures,” KRJ Vice President Amanda Kimes said. “You don’t see KRJ adding many new denim styles because we want to create quality pieces that the market needs. Only once we master the fit and prove the durability does a jean get a name and a place in the collection.” Be on the lookout for the new products at kimesranch.com. Current products can be seen in the show pen or rodeo arena, as well as on PHJ Pro Team members. For more information about the PHJ Pro Team visit phj. apha.com/phj-pro-team. Polylast™ SurfaceGuard with Microban® Antimicrobial Technology When performance matters, safety and comfort are key! Whether it’s in your trailer, wash racks, aisle ways, or any other locations that your horses frequent, Polylast™ offers the best slip-resistant surface available. The Polylast™ cushioning effect absorbs 40% to 50% of the impact shock on your horse’s hooves, which means that even horses with hoof or leg soreness are more comfortable. Since your horses don’t have to strain to maintain their footing they can be more relaxed and ready to perform even better!
“
No mats are used in a Polylast™ floored trailer so there are no mats to pull, clean and replace. Imagine never having to pull mats again! This porous surface allows fluids to flow through, and eliminates the need for any bedding, saving you time and money on bedding and labor. This also means your horses breathe cleaner air and stay cleaner.
What I like about Polylast flooring is the secure footing for the horses, and the comfort. When I get to a rodeo, my horses are ready to go. But the main thing I like about Polylast is that it is shavings free. I have rodeoed all my life and have had to use shavings to absorb the urine, but having Polylast flooring eliminates all of the shavings in your trailers.

Lucky Pulpit, Sire of ‘Chrome’ Dies
By Eric Mitchell
Lucky Pulpit, the sire of twotime Horse of the Year California Chrome, died Feb. 13 of an apparent heart attack while covering the first mare of the breeding season, according to Harris Farms, where he’s stood his entire career. “He was the picture of health all day,” said Dave McGlothlin, farm manager at Harris Farms. “He had a perfectly normal day. He and the teaser were talking smack to one another like they always did. We’re all stunned.” Both McGlothlin and stallion manager Raul Rosa were in the breeding shed with Lucky Pulpit when he collapsed coming off the mare. The 16-year-old son of Pulpit— Lucky Soph, by Cozzene, was bred and raced by Larry and Marianne Williams. He won the Smile Stakes on the turf at Arlington International Race Course and placed in two graded stakes before
retiring with $209,928 in earnings. Lucky Pulpit entered stud at Harris Farms near Coalinga, Calif., for a $2,500 fee. He stood this year for $7,500. He currently sits atop California’s 2017 general sire list and was the state’s leading sire last year by progeny earnings, with more than $10.7 million. He also was the state’s leading sire for three of the past four years. From seven crops of racing age, Lucky Pulpit is the sire of 148 winners, including the multiple Eclipse Award winning Californian Chrome. His 229 starters to date have amassed progeny earnings of $24 million. California Chrome, Horse of the Year in 2014 and 2016, was by far and away his top runner with a record $14,752,650 in earnings for a North American-based racehorse. Lucky Pulpit’s other top runners included grade 1 placed stakes winner Rousing Sermon, multiple stakes winner Luckarack, and stakes winner You’re Late.

In addition to offering live local racing through May 7th the season also includes: Special Fiesta Sundays featuring Mexican food and music Camel and Ostrich Races March 25th Kentucky Derby Party May 6th Turf Paradise General Manager Vince Francia said, “The Wiener Dog races at Turf Paradise have become so popular, we just hope the horses don’t get jealous.”

Francia added, “We also want to recognize the efforts of Kari Young who passed away in December. She made the Wiener Dog races the success they are today. We are honored to host these races as Kari’s husband and friends continue her great work for Arizona Adopt A Greyhound.” Turf Paradise is Arizona’s first sports franchise, and has operated continuously at the same location at 19th Ave and Bell. It offers one of the longest racing seasons in the United States thanks to Arizona’s great weather. Through Off Track Betting networks its races are viewed at OTB locations all over the United States and worldwide.

TUCSON, Ariz. – The first trip bareback rider Mason Clements made to La Fiesta de la Vaqueros is one he will not soon forget. The Santaquin, Utah, cowboy left a champion with a 168-point score in the two-head average. “I never got the opportunity to go to Tucson before, for one reason or another, and now I love Tucson,” said Clements, 24. “I loved it before because it was the first outdoor rodeo of the year and I was really excited to get outside and things turned out great for me.” Clements clinched the title with an 83-point ride on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Forward Motion in the finals. “I had never been on him (Forward Motion) before,” Clements said. “He was a little wiry in the box, and you had to get in there and get your hand in and do the best you could to get out on him, and it played out good for me.” Clements set the stage for his victory with an 85-point trip on Rocky Mountain Rodeo’s Lightning, which tied Austin Foss for the firstround win. Clements left Tucson with $8,142 in earnings. A year ago, Clements just missed qualifying for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER, finishing 18th in the WEATHER GUARD® PRCA World Standings with $60,361. Clements was within reach of the Wrangler NFR despite missing three months of the season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament MARCH 2017
wakeboarding in Orlando, Fla., in March, following the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Fla. “My approach is to stay healthy and enjoy what I’m doing,” Clements said about dealing with the injury. “I need to stay physically and mentally in shape 24/7, so when Oct. 1 comes, I didn’t leave anything on the table. My (right) knee finally feels like it’s getting all its strength back. There were a lot of emotions after that last rodeo when I realized I wasn’t going to make the Finals. I was frustrated and I knew the consequences of getting hurt and now I’m going to do everything in my power to make it this year.” Now, Clements doesn’t want anything to derail him from qualifying for the WNFR in Las Vegas in December. “I don’t even want to question it, it needs to happen, I need to make the Finals,” Clements said. “I need to quit giving excuses for not being there. I’m really confident and I feel like the trials and errors I’ve had to go through have given me more experience, and there’s no excuse for not making it.” Other winners at the $331,218 rodeo were all-around cowboy Erich Rogers ($9,545, tie-down roping and team roping), steer wrestler Tyler Pearson (15.9 seconds on three head), team ropers Erich Rogers/Cory Petska (12.7 seconds on two head), saddle bronc rider Tyler Corrington (168.5 points on two head), tie-down roper Ace Slone (19.3 seconds on two head), and barrel racer Stevi Hillman.

APHA welcomes Nutrena as newest 2017 World Show sponsor
Hillman Tops in Tucson By Ann Bleiker Tucson, Arizona—2016 Wrangler NFR qualifier Stevi Hillman jockeyed her way to the winner’s circle at La Fiesta de los Vaqueros in Tucson, Ariz., over the weekend. Hillman aboard a new horse, MCM ImASharpGuy, finished with a two run time of 34.95 seconds to capture the win. Sharpie, as the 5-year old grey gelding is affectionately called, made a name for himself and his owners Matt and Bendi Dunn in the futurity ranks last year with Jolene Montgomery winning the average at the 2016 Greg Olson Memorial in Buckeye, Ariz. He also carried Troy Crumrine in November of 2016 to a qualification to the 2017 American Rodeo. Now, Hillman is taking the reins in the ProRodeo ranks and appears they will be a duo to keep an eye on. Hillman also captured the win at the San Patricio County PRCA Rodeo in Sinton, Texas, aboard Cuatro Fame, aka Truck, with a time of 17.30 seconds.

APHA is delighted to welcome Nutrena as the newest 2017 World Show sponsor. As a World Show Sponsor, Nutrena will provide a variety of awards for the 2017 Youth World Championship Show and the 2017 Open/Amateur World Championship Show. Since its early beginnings in 1922 Kansas City, Kansas, and since moving under the Cargill name, Nutrena has been a trend-setting player in the feed industry. The staff, faculty, and students at Prescott Valley’s Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center Charter School are excited to be back for the second semester of the 2016-2017 academic year, after a restful and relaxing winter break. Prescott Valley’s Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center Charter School has a full schedule of student and community events and activities scheduled for the upcoming months. This year, Dr. DaLee Caryl, the Chemistry and Biology teacher for AAEC, will be hosting a Science Fair on March 10th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This will be the first time that our campus has hosted this event but thanks to Dr. Caryl we are looking forward to having this event in the years to come. Prescott Valley’s Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center Charter School’s Agriculture and Horsemanship teams and programs are making big gains. On February 9th they went to Chino Valley for the Spring CDE and brought home several awards including 1st place for our Entomology, Forestry and Horse Judging teams, as well as 2nd place for our Meat Judging and Vet Tech teams. Our students work very hard for all of the competitions they participate in and will be going to another one in Tucson on March 3rd. The faculty and staff at Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center Charter School are continually involved in community outreach and support. This hardworking group of individuals is sponsoring two teams for this year’s Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraising event. This friendly competition is helping to raise money for an important organization that serves the children in our immediate community. We’re also gearing up for a well-earned Spring Break. Our school will be closed from March 13th – March 17th. However, the learning never stops here, Mr. Reinsmith (our Geography and U.S. History teacher) will be traveling to Washington D.C. with several of our students to visit historical landmarks, museums and monuments. This current semester is shaping up to be our best one yet, here at Prescott Valley’s Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center Charter School. We will be hosting an open house for incoming students and curious community members on March 9th from 5:30-7p.m. Please come out and meet our amazing principal Patrick Wellert and all of our outstanding educators. AAEC offers a truly unique educational experience in the heart of Prescott Valley. The 20172018 school year begins August 7th 2017, enrollment packets are available now. Stop in or attend an open house, we are located at 7500 E. Civic Circle, and open from 7:30a.m. -4p.m.

Road to the Horse 2017 Judges Panel Lined with Champions
The Celebration of the Cowgirl at Road to the Horse 2017 has assembled the best of the best. Pulling the most elite equine professionals from various disciplines, together they will carefully evaluate each competitor to determine the next World Champion of Colt Starting. The judging of Road to the Horse is based on specific colt starting criteria, while protecting the well-being of the horse. Judging considers that every horse is an individual and that there
are many methods of horsemanship that are “natural” or respectful of the horse, its nature and how they learn. Judges watch and score every moment of interaction at Road to the Horse, it is not just the performance in the obstacle course that decides the next World Champion but every step and breath taken from beginning to end. The Road to the Horse judges include Yvonne Barteau, Jack Brainard, Suzy Jeane, Dr. Jim Heird, Cody Lambert and Jeff Williams. Assisting the
judges at Road to the Horse 2017 will be Judges Steward, Stormy Mullins.

Phil Lyne’s short but noteworthy ProRodeo career
The Best Quality Handmade Hats for the Best People
jimmy@doublehhats.com www.doublehhats.com 201 N. Frontier St. Wickenburg, AZ 85390 121 S. Main St. Darby, MT 59829
Many of his peers called Phil Lyne the most talented cowboy to ever compete in a rodeo arena. He was the 1969 PRCA Rookie of the Year and four years later, he walked away from competition – after winning four Linderman Awards, which honors the cowboy earning the most money in a combination of riding and timed events.
Phil Lyne
Lyne was always the busiest cowboy at a rodeo; he competed in tie-down roping, steer wrestling, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding. He won the allaround and tie-down roping world championships in 1971 and ’72 – and promptly retired. The soft-spoken Lyne said he wanted to spend more time with family and take care of his cattle business, and that he was often thinking of that while at the arena. Lyne won the average titles in both calf roping and bull riding at the 1972 National Finals Rodeo – a rare occurrence for one man to win titles in riding and timed events – and was the Reserve Bull Riding World Champion after riding nine bulls in the Finals. Lyne was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in the inaugural class in 1979, the same year he returned to competition on a limited basis. Lyne added to his legend by winning the 1990 steer roping world championship. The 5-foot-9, 160-pounder is the only cowboy to win average titles in three events: steer roping, calf roping and bull riding. During the 1972 season, Lyne and fellow Hall of Famer Larry Mahan were battling for the all-around championship and were the focus of a movie called “The Great American Cowboy” that was released in 1973 and won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Mahan was injured during the ’72 season and Lyne captured his second straight allaround title.

The millennial generation is talked about for being a unique generation, with needs, wants and desires that are very different from any other. Looked down on by some and praised by others, millennials are now the largest generation, according to the Pew Research Center. The center’s analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data shows that millennials, young adults ages 18-34, exceeded the number of baby boomers in 2015. My generation is also the largest generation in the workforce today. Like it or not, the world has to adjust to millennials, a generation that is confident and collaborative, according to academics. Fortunately, the world is adjusting to us, just as we are adjusting to it. Business industries, including agriculture, are adapting to our futuristic way of thinking. Different industries are adapting to us in various ways, with professionals in most industries probably in agreement that it is important to engage millennials in their advocacy efforts. American agriculture works hard at advocating. Farmers and ranchers strive to connect with younger generations and teach them about agriculture. However, successfully telling agriculture’s story today must include understanding some of the influences behind millennial involvement in agriculture advocacy. In college, I had the opportunity to research why millennials become involved in agriculture advocacy efforts. From talking to other student leaders who attended the National Agriculture Advocacy Conference at Texas A&M University, I found there are four types of millennials engaged in agriculture advocacy. Defined by their background influences, motivation and specific outlooks of agriculture advocacy, the four types of millennial agriculture advocates are: The Perpetual AdvocateThe perpetual advocate is motivated by his or her past involvement and experiences. They have been involved in some type of agriculture advocacy activities before. They have also often had some experience in agriculture-related youth organizations like 4-H or FFA. The perpetual advocate likes to be busy and tends to stay involved in agriculture advocacy efforts for long periods of time.

The Family Man or WomanThe family man or woman advocate is motivated by a family connection to agriculture advocacy. At a very early age, their families taught them about the importance of agriculture and agriculture advocacy. The family man or woman advocate is involved to meet new people and for the other social aspects of advocacy efforts. The VisionaryThe visionary advocate is always thinking about the future and how he or she can create change for the better. They are motivated by their need to be a part of something greater, something that matters or that is productive. The visionary advocate is involved because he or she wants to figure out how weaknesses associated with the industry’s advocacy efforts can be turned into strengths. While they have a very futuristic way of thinking, they see the importance of looking at both sides of an issue to make sound judgments about it. The TraditionalistThe traditionalist advocate is motivated by the tradition he or she associates with agriculture advocacy. Their passion for agriculture is often influenced by the family tradition of farming or ranching. The traditionalist advocate thinks that agriculture advocacy should focus on the tradition of agriculture, the facts of agriculture production and all sectors. Their continued involvement in agriculture advocacy stems from their desire to help educate the public. Most of the student leaders I talked to had an agriculture background, were very close to their families and wanted to make connections, both personally and professionally. While my findings do not explain why every millennial is involved in agriculture advocacy, they provide valuable insights about why certain millennials with a connection to agriculture are involved in the industry’s advocacy efforts.
My generation is already extensively involved in agriculture advocacy. A greater understanding of millennial involvement can only strengthen these efforts. It is time to do more to engage today’s largest generation in agriculture advocacy efforts. Millennials telling agriculture’s story help share its importance not only now, but for generations to come.

"With this move to a bigger horse show in a more accessible area, we are making the Finals available to an even larger number of riders. Undefeated Chief Cicatriz, now a perfect five-for-five, won the $75,000 Phoenix Gold Cup Saturday at Turf Paradise. Longshots won the two co-featured stakes: Kera Kera ($29.20) took the $30,000 Sun City Handicap and Aventador ($36.20) won the $30,000 Turf Paradise Handicap. Slow out of the gate and favored at 9-5, Chief Cicatriz ($5.60) then quickly seized the lead with Daniel Vergara up and was immediately challenged by Ankeny Hill, who tired at the eighth pole to finish third. Chief Cicatriz drew clear to a 1 ½ length victory over a fast-closing Saturdaynitelites in the field of 11 older horses. Owned by Roy Gene Evans, Chief Cicatriz, named after a fictional Native American chief from John Wayne’s movie The Searchers, raced the 6-furlongs in 1:09.47. Trained by Shawn Davis, Chief Cicatriz’s earnings stand at $126,810. “He’s perfect so far,” said Davis. “We want to see how good he is, so his next race we’ll be at Oaklawn Park for a stakes in March.”
