Reading a Feed Tag: Part 1
Jyme L. Nichols Director of Technical Services Bluebonnet Feeds – Ardmore, OK We’ve all been there; standing in the feed aisle trying to decide which product to choose, wanting to make an informed decision, the best decision. We think about the needs of our horse and we research the internet. We even compare feed tags, but when you don’t really know what to look for, they all look the same and it’s hard to tell if there really is any difference between one bag and another. In the first part of this nutrition series, we will evaluate the major components of a feed and show you what to look for on a feed tag so that you can be informed as a buyer and horse owner. The first thing people typically look for on a feed tag is the crude protein percentage. This is one of the most misunderstood pieces of nutrition information in the equine industry. Crude protein is just the number we arrive at when we multiply the amount of nitrogen in the feed by 6.25. Crude protein doesn’t give us any information about the quality of the amino acid profile. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, so what we really want to know is amino acid content of the feed. Lysine is the first limiting amino acid, which means it is the most important building block of protein. Without enough lysine, the other essential amino acids will not be available in appropriate amounts. To make matters even more confusing, tags are listed with percentage values, but horses don’t have a requirement for a certain percent of protein or lysine at all. Instead, they require a specific weight of each nutrient. So, the percentage is not relevant until you multiply it by the total weight of feed that you are feeding. For example, an 1100 lb horse in light exercise requires about 700 grams of crude protein and 30 grams of lysine. If your feed is 14% protein and 0.8% lysine, each pound provides 63.5 g protein and 3.5 g lysine. Keep in mind the grain you feed is just a “balancer” for the horse’s total ration; most of the protein and lysine will be provided in the horse’s diet through forage, feed should be used to make up for the protein and lysine that is lacking in the forage. Fat is becoming ever so popular in equine feeds because it is a “safer” way to increase the calorie content of a feed (compared to adding starchy ingredients such as corn and oats). Fat provides 2.25 times more calories than starch and is considered a “cool energy” source, meaning it won’t cause the horse to be excitable or “hot-headed”. Fat is also great for helping put weight on a horse and contributing to a glossy hair coat. Crude fiber is a measurement of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin (structural components of plants). Crude fiber in a feed typically comes from products such as alfalfa, beet pulp, and hulls (the portion remaining once starch and oil is removed). Horses require fiber in their diet, and most horses meet that requirement though forage. Feeds that are higher in fiber are usually safer to feed to horses compared to feeds that are low in fiber (and high in starch) because there is less risk of starch overload to the hind-gut which could cause colic, gas, and laminitis. High fiber generally means fewer calories, so if a feed has a high fiber content and your horse needs extra calories, you will want to look for a high fat content as well in order to provide the needed calories. The next major area to evaluate on a feed tag is the ingredient listing. Some manufacturers list the major ingredients by name which is referred to as an “open label”. Other manufacturers list major ingredients in collective terms such as “by-products” which allows them to substitute ingredients based on commodity market prices and make the formula as cheap as possible. When a company uses an open label, they are showing exactly which ingredients they used in the feed. An example of the first few ingredients on an open label may read like this: Alfalfa meal, Soybean Meal, Wheat Middlings, Rice Bran. A company using collective terms will have first ingredients such as Roughage Products, Processed Grain By-Products, Plant Protein Products. The downside of by-product labeling is that the feed can vary radically from bag to bag and mill to mill because each mill is using ingredients that are in close proximity and low in cost. Ingredients available in one region of the country are not available in other regions, so if you are traveling from state to state it is really difficult to get the same feed every time if the brand is not using an open label and locked formula policy. Open Label doesn’t mean “Locked Formula”. Locked Formulas mean that a company sets the ingredients for a particular feed and chooses not to add or subtract ingredients from that formula. The Open Label, Locked Formula model creates the most consistent product from bag to bag, but it typically comes with a slightly higher price, because it takes intense management to ensure raw ingredients are of appropriate quality and finished feeds meet all nutrient guarantees and visual expectations. Equine nutrition is complex and ever-changing. It is a science. Nutritionists, researchers, and feed manufactures continue to challenge past practices in an effort to improve what we already know. Education is power, we can never know too much, and it is the responsibility of each horse owner to provide the best nutrition that we can in our given circumstance. Stay tuned for next month’s column, where we will discuss what to look for when evaluating the vitamin and mineral guarantees on a feed tag.

Spirit of the Horse: A Celebration in Fact and Fable By William Shatner
From his first time riding as a child, William Shatner has felt a deep love for horses. Whether seated in the saddle, communicating with them, or simply appreciating their beauty, his bond with these majestic animals is deep. For decades he has sought to share his joy—with children, veterans, those with disabilities, and many more— through his annual Hollywood Charity Horse Show. And here, he brings that same joy to his fans and readers. In Spirit of the Horse, the Star Trek and Boston Legal legend speaks from the heart about the remarkable effect horses have had on his life and on the lives of others. From his first horse, bought impulsively on the advice of a twelve-year-old, to his favorite horses, acquired after many years of learning what to look for, this book draws from Shatner’s own experience and pairs it with a wealth of classic horse stories, including unique retellings of the Pegasus myth and the feats of the most famous war horses throughout history. The result is a celebration that captures the unparalleled connection between humans and horses—and the power, courage,
mindfulness, and healing that they can inspire in us. Many fans have heard about Shatner’s passion for horses; few have seen it revealed as completely as it is here. Available Hardcover – May 23, 2017 on Amazon and select bookstores

Mitchell and Cooper team up to win Oakdale
OAKDALE, Calif. – A new team roping partnership started off with a major win for Spencer Mitchell and Clay O’Brien Cooper. The duo placed in both rounds to win the average at the Oakdale (Calif.) Saddle Club Rodeo on April 14-15. “Clay called me about two days before the books opened for Oakdale and asked if I wanted to rope,” Mitchell said. “That’s an opportunity you don’t want to pass up, he’s a legend in the sport.” Cooper qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo 29 times and is a seven-time world champion (1985-89, 1992, 1994). Mitchell is no stranger to success, either, as he qualified for the Wrangler NFR in 2011-12. “As long as things go as they have, we’ll keep it going for as long as we can,” Mitchell said. If there’s going to be a change
22
in roping partners, spring is the best time to do it, Cooper said, adding that Oakdale is basically the start of the spring run. All told, their 13.9 seconds on two head was worth $3,757. While the money is nice, the confidence
boost in their new partnership is just as valuable. “It’s huge to start a new partnership on a win like that,” Mitchell said. “To place in both rounds and win the average is tough with the competition here, but it boosts your confidence.” The partnership wasn’t the only new factor in the Oakdale arena for Cooper, as he started roping with a new, 13-year-old American Quarter Horse his wife and daughter named Maximus. “I’m starting to get some runs under my belt and get to know him and him know me, and it’s starting to feel comfortable,” Cooper said. Making good draws in both rounds helped the ropers, but good chemistry was a factor, too. “I tend to stay more aggressive and Clay handles the rest no matter what you throw at him,” Mitchell said. Cooper agreed with Mitchell. “We put those together in almost identical runs at 6.9 (seconds) and 7 flat, so it was two good, snappy runs,” Cooper said.
MAY 2018
This wasn’t Mitchell’s first win at Oakdale, having won there in 2012 with Broc Cresta. “It feels good – and in the home state dang sure is awesome,” Mitchell said. Cooper has competed at Oakdale for more than 30 years. This year marks his second win at the historic rodeo. “It’s unique because both guys come from the right side in team roping and there are only a couple of those in the PRCA with that setup, so it’s old-school and traditional,” Cooper said. “So to get it a second time with Spencer, and it being our first one together, makes it special.” Before winning Oakdale, Mitchell was 10th in the 2018 PRCA World Standings for team roping headers and Cooper was 35th among heelers. Having a successful start at Oakdale has Mitchell confident they’ll both be roping in Las Vegas at the Wrangler NFR in December. “There are a lot of good rodeos coming up and we’re both happy our partnership looks like it’s something that could be great,” Mitchell said. Other winners at the $117,773 rodeo were bareback rider David Peebles (88 points on C5 Rodeo’s Virgil); steer wrestler Blake Knowles (9.6 seconds on two head); saddle bronc rider Hardy Braden (80 points on Four Star Rodeo’s Fancy Pants); tie-down roper Kyle Dickens (17.9 seconds on two head); barrel racer Lynette Clyde (17.72 seconds) and bull rider Boudreaux Campbell (90 points on Four Star Rodeo’s Yellow Fever).

We created a safe, durable structure for horses! The structure is made out of a 20’HC (high cube) container in the size of 20’ x 8’ x 9’6”. We decided to go with a high cube instead of a standard height (8’6”) container to allow extra headspace for any large horses or animals and also additional clearance for storage in the tack room.

Age of the Gunfighters Some romanticize all the gunfighters of the Old West as contemporaries, as if they graduated from the same class in school. In a certain sense, this theory is true, at least for those Civil War brigands who are all about the same age. But across the entire spectrum of the frontier West, another reality is evident.
In 1867, gunfighter Wild Bill (above) is in his prime, at the age of 30.

Class of Quantrill
The Civil War trains a bunch of youngsters to be outlaws, but none are as successful as the “Class of Quantrill” (left), with numerous star students graduating to a life of crime, including Frank and Jesse James. An older Frank will change his mind about the Confederate cause he once championed: “...I hope before I die the people of the North and South will join hands and build a monument somewhere on the Mason Dixon Line as high as the tower of Babel to the memory of the Blue and the Gray with this inscription, ‘Union and Liberty, one and inseparable, now and forever.’”

Preventing Back Surgery for the Equestrian By Dr. John A. Gangemi
When I was presenting at the Mane Event Horse Exposition last month at West World, a very important question was asked in the post discussion. I promised the equestrian, I would address her question in this edition of Bridle and Bit. The question was, “How can the equestrian prevent having a back surgery?”
The number one reason why equestrians stop riding their horses is from spinal disc bulging that leads to herniation, caused by mechanical spinal stenosis. Spinal stenosis is epidemic and is the leading cause of back surgeries in America today. “Stenosis” is an engineering term that means, narrowing of an opening. This is a typical pelvic and spine distortion seen in equestrians

The body is mechanical, and mechanical things malfunction. The spinal column is the most mechanical entity in the body and it, along with the shoulders, arms, hips, knees, and feet, is subjected to all types of trauma. When a misalignment from trauma occurs, nerves become impinged, which results in adverse health like pain, restricted movement and eventually disability. Impinged nerves can alter the normal physiology of any organ. This equates to breathing problems, heart problems, digestive problems and even weight gain.
Lumbar. The nerve roots of the 5th lumbar go to muscles as well as organs of pelvic area (large intestines, kidneys, reproductive organs, prostate). This person had severe pain (grade 10) in the low back and intestinal dysfunction (notice the inflammation of the large intestines from nerve impingement.) Also note the bend in the spine, and the right hip is higher than the left. After A-P X-Ray of an Equestrian Notice the bend in the spine has straightened out, the large intestinal bloating from stenosis and nerve impingement of the 5th lumbar has improved (notice less areas of gas on the film).also notice the right and left pelvis has leveled out. This person’s pain level greatly improved, from a grade 10 (highest level) to a 2. Mechanical Spinal Stenosis occurs when the bones of the spine move backwards (posterior) also called “retrolisthesis” by Radiologists. Retrolisthesis occurs from excessive spinal flexion movements or trauma (horse falls). When the spinal bones (vertebrae) move backwards stenosis of the openings of the spine (the spinal canal and intervertebral foramina) occurs. Spinal stenosis will lead to: nerve impingement, disc bulging, inflammation, and pain that can radiate down the arm and legs, as well as organ dysfunction. Notice the large intestinal dysfunction in the pre X-Ray, seen as inflammation and bloating. Please notice the normal spine photo on the left. The vertebrae are forward where the bones lock into place, there is wide openings where the nerves exit the spine and there is no nerve impingement or disc bulging. The photo on right is showing spinal stenosis. The second vertebrae moved backwards, narrowing the opening of where the nerves exits the spine, creating nerve impingement, disc bulging, inflammation and pain (Red). It is imperative equestrians of all ages be evaluated by a health care continued on page 42

U.S. Show Jumping Team Takes Home Silver in Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ Mexico faults. Mexico earned the bronze with 21 faults. Granato (Wellington, FL) and Paige Tredennick’s nine-yearold Warmblood gelding got the U.S. off to a strong start in the first round, jumping clear. A four fault round by Soleau-Millar (Wellington, FL) and Cacharel,
Bridge Brook Arms and Donna Vanderwoude-Dyment’s 10-yearold KWPN mare, and a five fault round by Wolff (New Albany, OH) and Casall, Blacklick Bend Farm's 13-year-old Holsteiner gelding, allowed the U.S. to drop Gates (Medina, WA) and Pumped Up Kicks', Evergate Stables LLC’s
15-year-old Warmblood gelding, 12 fault round. The U.S. Team sat in second place on nine faults after round one, trailing Canada with eight faults. The pressure was on to close the one-fault gap in round two. Granato and Carlchen W continued with another clear round. With a four fault round from Soleau-Millar and Cacharel and an eight fault round by Gates and Pumped Up Kicks, the U.S. needed Canada's Jonathan Millar and Daveau to incur at least four faults to remain in contention for gold. However, they jumped clear and Wolff and Casall dropped a rail, keeping the U.S. in silver medal position. “Our main goal was to keep our qualifying position for the final in Barcelona. We extended our margin by 30 points and gave ourself some breathing room,” said Chef d’Equipe, Robert Ridland . “This was the first 5* event for three of the four riders and the first Nations Cup for a couple. We were close; we obviously always try to win, but it was a good day for a young team.” Stay up to date on the NetJets U.S. Show Jumping Team by following US Equestrian on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and USA Jumping on Facebook. The energy yield is approximately the same as an all alfalfa pallet. It has the advantage for a lower protein yield that may be beneficial for many classes of horses.

“The ELD mandate imposes restrictions upon the agriculture industry that lack flexibility necessary for the unique realities of hauling agriculture commodities. If the agriculture industry had been forced to comply by the March 18 deadline, live agricultural commodities, including plants and animals, would have been at risk of perishing before they reached their destination. The 90-day extension is critical to give DOT additional time to issue guidance on hours-of-service and other ELD exemptions that are troubling for agriculture haulers.” “Current ELD technologies do not recognize the hours-of-service exemptions for agriculture that are in federal law. This is a classic example of a one-size-fits-all federal regulation that ignores common sense to the detriment of sectors like agriculture. “I applaud Secretary Chao for recognizing these obstacles and giving extra time for compliance while DOT issues guidance. While public safety is a critical concern for all of trucking, the safety of living agricultural commodities in transport must also be considered.”

2018 NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro Co-Champions
By Sally Harrison
Chad Bushaw and Bittersweet, the Metallic Cat daughter he rode to win the 2017 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro championship, posted a 222-point challenge in the first set of the 21-horse NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro Finals. The challenge was met by Megan Miller and Carolena Reyn, by Dual Smart Rey, early in the second set, and never topped. This is the second time Bushaw has shared the NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro title. In 2008, riding Cats Ruby, he scored 222 points to tie for the championship with Paula Wood on Cash My Boon. He also won the 2012 NCHA Derby on Bet On A Cat LTE, $381,154, a full brother to 2018 NCHA Super Stakes Open finalist Judgement Day, shown for Rose Valley Ranch by Michael Cooper. Sunday’s title secured the second leg of the NCHA Non-Pro Triple Crown for Bittersweet and Bushaw, who ranks third among all-time top NCHA Non-Pro money earners with $3.35 million. Bittersweet is out of the Dual Rey daughter Miss Sea Rey, dam of seven NCHA earners of $191,033. Megan Miller and Carolena Reyn won the first go-round with 220 points, claimed the high cumulative of 435.5 points, and won the NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro Semi-Finals with 218.5 points. In addition, Miller also placed fourth, with 216 points, in the Super Stakes Non-Pro Finals aboard Hey Boo Boo, by Dual Smart Rey. Miller, an NCHA Non-Pro Hall of Fame inductee and the NCHA earner of $1,021,452, won the 2009 NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro with Itawtathenapuddycat and the 2009 NCHA Super Stakes Classic Non-Pro on Travs Scooter. Whitney Hall, Commanche, Okla., scored 219.5 points riding Lucky Nedd Pepper to place third. Bred and owned by Whitney’s parents Shannon and Ronda Hall and sired by Smart Little Lena, Lucky Nedd Pepper is out of the Peptoboonsmal daughter Royal Red Pepto LTE $177,472, and half-sister to the Halreycious son Royal Red Hal LTE $83,808, who Whitney showed as 2014 NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro Limited Champion.

Pain relief for your horse. Neprofin is a revolutionary new pain treatment for the alleviation of lameness in horses. Originally formulated to work on the same scientific principles as NSAID’s and phenylbutazone (bute), these enzymes have since proven effective on sprains, fractures, rheumatoid arthritis and osterarthritis. Neprofin assists with tissue repair, reduces fluid formation, accelerates the healing process and can be adopted as a replacement therapy in pathological conditions.

This mare has an old injury to the lateral side of her right front cannon bone, with deep scarring. There was extensive soft tissue damage which restricted her movement, causing a shortness of stride. This image shows visible enlargement of the soft tissue injury by its heat signature from recurrent inflammation. Note that the right leg is visibly larger than the left leg.
Following 8 weeks of Neprofin administration, this mare showed a marked improvement. Heat signatures have returned to normal, showing virtually no signs of inflammation or pain. Neprofin was able to digest and eliminate the inflamed scar tissue mass, which had caused lameness and a shortened stride. Note that both legs are now identical in size and shape. The mare is now sound and bears weight evenly on both front legs.

U.S. Olympians claim Longines FEI awards for Best Jumping Rider and Best Horse
Paris, France – World number one Kent Farrington (Wellington, Fla.) has claimed the award for the Longines FEI World’s Best Jumping Rider and HH Azur, the 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare owned by Double H Farm and François Mathy, was declared the Longines FEI World’s Best Jumping Horse at a special presentation in the Paris City Hall last night. Olympic silver-medalist Farrington took over the number one slot in the Longines World Rankings in May 2017 and refused to allow anyone to break his winning streak, remaining at the top of the elite list for the rest of the year. The 37-year-old, who is well on the road to recovery after breaking his right leg in a fall in mid-February, received the award for the Longines FEI World’s Best Jumping Rider after finishing the year on 3,313 points. HH Azur, whom McLain Ward rode to victory at last year’s Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final in Omaha (USA), added another major accolade to her collection when being named the Longines FEI World’s Best Jumping Horse. Affectionately known as “Annie”, the Olympic mare is owned by Double H Farms and Francois Mathy (BEL), who collected the award at tonight’s presentation accompanied by his wife Claudia Mathy and McLain Ward. “We are delighted to present the Longines FEI best rider and best horse here tonight in Paris in this beautiful setting of the Mairie de Paris, a fitting prelude to the FEI World Cup Finals,” FEI President Ingmar de Vos said. “We are all inspired by how these athletes – both human and equine – ignite the passion in our sport and show us what it takes to succeed on the world stage. In addition, the successful partnership we have established with Longines, demonstrating the synergies between the brand and our sport, not only give extra recognition to our athletes, but the creation of these awards has given additional value to the Longines rankings and provides a further incentive to our athletes worldwide.” 56
Excitement Flying High at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ CVI3* Vaulting Test Event Mill Spring, N.C. – Last weekend, the Tryon International Equestrian Center, host of the FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018 (WEG), welcomed top vaulters from the U.S. and abroad for the CVI3*, CVI2*, CVI1*, and CVIJ2* competitions from April 6-8. The CVI3* served as the official WEG Vaulting Test Event, allowing athletes an opportunity to become better acquainted with the venue, arena, and various facilities on the grounds. Vaulting is scheduled for the second week of WEG from September 18-22. Competition will be held in the newly renovated indoor arena, complete with 5,000 seats for spectators and central air to best serve the vaulters and reiners who will compete there. The indoor arena will be expanded to include two warm up arenas, and an attached barn is being built. Emma Seely, Chef d’Equipe for the U.S. Vaulting Team, is enthusiastic about the vaulting arena and facilities, “The barns are perfect. The stalls are big enough, we’re in the adjoining barn which is very convenient. There feels like there will be plenty of warm-up and everyone will be able to get what they need to get in for riding, lunging, and vaulting. From my perspective, the future looks bright and really good. I’m super glad we came and got to meet some staff and see how it’s set up. It has the potential to be an awesome venue for us!” Lighting, sound and speakers, and footing are all essential to supporting a vaulting test. “We don’t want it too deep, we don’t want it too hard. We want surface that the horses can go through easily and that the vaulters can land on and have some give but they don’t sink in and disappear,” elaborated Seely on the importance of quality footing. “This is good standard footing for us.” Selection trials for the U.S. Vaulting Team started on April 6 with the CVI3* WEG Vaulting Test Event and six more events will be used as qualifying events for the WEG team. Learn more about the selection criteria for individual, pas-de-deux, and squad divisions for WEG. Additional information relevant to WEG vaulting can be accessed here. “Right now, it’s about going through the selection trials and starting to see where everybody is sorting out,” said Seely. “Our selection is based on scores. As Chef, I’m observing… how’s it going for them? How did their horses do? What is their prep for competition? So I have a better feel for what they’ll need when they are here.”

Bettis Best the Field to Win RNCFR Title
Kissimmee, Florida—One year can seem like a very long time but 12 months on the calendar can also be very short. If time is relative as Einstein theorized, no one can attest to the truth of it more than Texas barrel racer Taci Bettis. Just one year ago, the Round Top, Texas cowgirl was just getting back in the saddle on her good horse Smash after a very long six month layoff due to surgery necessitated by an injury. Unsure of
Fencing Arizona for Over 50 Years!
just how good the gelding would bounce back, Bettis placed at a few Texas rodeos before breaking through with a big win at Corpus Christi the end of April. That launched the rookie into a season of amazing firsts and the last year has seen her collect the 2017 WPRA Rookie of the Year title and a berth at her first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR). She finished 10th in the WPRA World standings having won $162,446, the third best rookie season in WPRA history.

MAY 2018
As 2018 got underway, Bettis hit another series of firsts as she competed in winter rodeos that she was either not ranked high enough to compete in or had no horse with which to compete last season. Her winter of firsts took her through Denver, Fort Worth, San Antonio and Houston, as well as the unsanctioned RFD-TV’s The American, which she won. Bettis and Smash have proven to be one of the most reliable teams on the road and they placed fourth in Denver and seventh in Fort Worth before having a great RodeoHouston, winning their Super Series and SemiFinals and ultimately finishing fifth. The 2018 march began on New Year’s weekend with a second place finish at the Ram Texas Circuit Finals, allowing her to end the season second in the year-end standings and earn a spot in her first Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo (RNCFR), held annually in Kissimmee, Florida. The big carrot at the end of the road for pro rodeo’s circuit cowboys and cowgirls, the RNCFR offers not only a chance at a National title for competitors who only rodeo part time, but also a shot at a huge purse, nearly a million dollars, and an awesome prize line that includes a $20,000 voucher from Ram towards the
purchase of a new vehicle.

All-Breed Ranch Work Championship to pay $10,000 July 7 Spurred by the popularity of ranch horse events that celebrate the versatility and workmanship of a cattleman’s best asset, APHA and Classic Equine have teamed up to host the inaugural Ranch Work Championship July 7 at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The championship focuses on authentic ranch work events—ranch work, ranch roping, ranch cow work and ranch cutting—to spotlight horses with the skills to be valuable assets on the job; read on for class descriptions. A 3D Divisional Payout— where each D pays equally—offers
increased payout opportunities for all skill levels. Each division also includes a $600 high-point champion and $400 reserve champion award bonus. Additionally, the high-scoring Paint Horse in each event will receive special awards. The pre-entry deadline for the Ranch Work Championship is 5p.m. June 29. The horse/ rider team is judged on the correctness, efficiency and pattern accuracy with which the obstacles are negotiated and the attitude and mannerisms exhibited by the horse. Judging emphasis is on identifying the well-broke, responsive and wellmannered horse which can correctly navigate and negotiate the pattern. RANCH ROPING—$1,750 added The purpose of this event is to show the horse’s ability to assist the rider in roping a cow out of a herd, as would be done on a ranch for branding or doctoring. The horse and rider should move quietly through the herd, to locate the desired cow and position the rider to make the catch quietly with as little disturbance to the herd as possible. RANCH COW WORK—$1,750 added The ideal ranch horse should also be a cow horse and this event demonstrates and measures the horse’s ability to do cow work. There are

The Bureau of Land Management is issuing a call for public nominations to fill three positions on its national Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board. Nominations are for a term of three years and are needed to represent the following categories of interest: public interest, wild horse and burro advocacy, and veterinary medicine. The Advisory Board advises the BLM, an agency of the Department of the Interior, and the U.S. Forest Service, an agency of the Department of Agriculture, on the protection and management of wild free-roaming horses and burros on public lands administered by those agencies. The Board will meet one to four times a year and the BLM’s Designated Federal Official may call additional meetings when necessary. Members serve without salary, but are reimbursed for travel and per diem expenses according to government travel regulations. The Advisory Board is comprised of nine members who represent a balance of interests. Each member has knowledge or special expertise that qualifies him or her to provide advice in one of the following categories: wild horse and burro advocacy, wild horse and burro research, veterinary medicine, natural resources management, humane advocacy, wildlife management, livestock management, public interest (with special knowledge of equine behavior), and public interest (with special knowledge of protection of wild horses and burros, management of wildlife, animal husbandry, or natural resource management). Individuals shall qualify to serve on the Board because of their education, training, or experience that enables them to give informed and objective advice regarding the interest they represent. They should demonstrate experience or knowledge of the area of their expertise and a commitment to collaborate in seeking solutions to resource management issues. Any individual or organization may nominate one or more persons to serve on the Advisory Board; individuals may also nominate themselves. In accordance with Section 7 of the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, Federal and state government employees are not eligible to serve on the Board. Interested parties shall submit a resume and nomination letter. The following information must be provided: the position(s) for which the nominee wants to be considered; the nominee’s first, middle, and last name; business and home addresses and phone numbers; e-mail address; present occupation/title and employer; education (colleges, degrees, major field(s) of study); career highlights; qualifications: relevant education, training, and experience; experience or knowledge of wild horse and burro management; experience or knowledge of horses or burros (equine health, training, and management); and experience in working with disparate groups to achieve collaborative solutions. Applicants must also indicate any BLM permits, leases, or licenses held by the nominee or his/her employer; whether the nominee is a federally registered lobbyist; and explain why the nominee wants to serve on the Board. Also, at least one letter of reference from special interests or organizations the nominee may represent must be provided. Nominations may be submitted by e-mail to Dorothea Boothe, at dboothe@blm.gov. To send by U.S. Postal Service, mail to the National Wild Horse and Burro Program, Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management, 1849 C Street, N.W., Room 2134 LM, Attn: Dorothea Boothe, WO-260, Washington, DC 20240. week last summer, I was wrapped in my problems trying to figure out how to make myself feel better. My Dad came in and told me about a neighbor that was moving from our neighborhood and could use some help. I decided to lend a hand and ended up having fun... Other people were there moving boxes and being cheerful trying to help the family. Over the course of the day, being wrapped up in service I experienced the joy of serving others. I’ve learned that often even small things like a kind text message or a bringing a special treat for someone is a very good use of time; and if you are open to being positive, you can have a great experience too!”
May is here bringing warm weather and heart-warming kind deed stories presented by the 2018 Gilbert Rodeo Royalty! For twenty years the Gilbert Rodeo Royalty has shared a platform of “Kicking Up Kindness”. They encourage kind deed detectives to be on the lookout for acts of kindness.

Arizona Farm Bureau Names Philip Bashaw Chief Executive Officer ---ARIZONA, April 23, 2018---The Arizona Farm Bureau Federation (AZFB) Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Philip Bashaw has been selected to serve as the organization's new Chief Executive Officer and Executive Secretary. Beginning May 14th, Bashaw will lead AZFB's staff, overseeing the dayto-day operations of Arizona's largest general farm organization as the Chief Executive Officer, and serve as the Executive Secretary on the board of directors.
Stefanie Smallhouse, President of AZFB, stated, "On behalf of the Arizona Farm Bureau Board of Directors, we are very excited to have Phil back on board and look forward to working with him. He will bring new ideas and valuable experience to our organization. on their behalf." "The agriculture industry has been an important part of finding solutions to the challenges facing Arizona. AZFB and the agriculture industry have a rich history of independence and forward thinking that has contributed to the success of Arizona and the southwest.," Bashaw said. "I am honored to be chosen to lead this great organization and their grassroots leadership in the mission to preserve and improve the agriculture industry."
Philip Bashaw Bashaw grew up in Safford, Arizona before studying Agriculture Technology Management at the University of Arizona. Why spend your valuable time digging holes & pouring concrete?
I have been a little over protective over the years with my children. But when your kids start driving, you have to be. This may seem a bit over kill, but it should come full circle. When my kids started to drive, my biggest fear was the automatic transmission. They drove used vehicles and I always worried that, being a used vehicle and not shifting the way I thought the transmission should shift, it would leave one of my kids stranded someday causing me some huge dollars. To help protect the investments, I installed a transmission filter set up (as you see in the picture attached) and it may not seem like much, but the older vehicles never gave a lot of protection to the transmission fluid, other than the filter that is inside the transmission pan. Having had the pleasure to over haul a couple of my kid’s transmission now, it was a great comfort to find no internal debris in the transmission pan, no excessively worn parts, and the only issues I had with the internals of the transmission were some worn out springs in the valve body.

If you’re driving an older model transmission, Allison Transmissions excluded (due to their spin on filter on the transmission), an external transmission filter kit may be up your alley. These kits increase longevity of your transmission, increase fluid life and have a filter you can swap out at any time to make maintenance much easier. This may be something you are looking for. What Do I Feed My Horse? - Managing Forage
Forage is the most important ingredient in the horse’s diet, yet the choices in forage species and form are sometimes daunting. Understanding the types and physical forms of forage and importance of forage quality will help horse owners choose the best forage to feed their horse.
1. Forage Species
Forage in the form of hay or pasture is the primary ingredient in the diet for most horses. Horses can consume many different varieties of high quality forage, both alfalfa and grasses, without out digestive upset, provided the horse is properly adapted to the forage. There are many plants that can be grown, cut and stored for use as horse forage. From a practical standpoint, forages can be roughly divided into legumes and grasses. Legumes commonly include alfalfa and clover. Grasses consist of many varieties including: timothy grass, orchard grass, rye grass, bermuda grass, teff grass, blue grass, fescue and many others. Misconception: Horses can’t eat “pick a variety” forage. I have personally heard that horses can’t eat alfalfa, clover, fescue, bermuda grass, as well as other varieties. Fact: If forage is properly cut, harvested and stored, horses can eat many varieties of forage. Unless, the horse has a specific allergy or health condition, many different forage choices will suffice. Solution: Many horse owners choose forage based on what is familiar to them. Then these people move to a different area of the country that raises different varieties of forage. Rather than condemn a forage as evil, talk with your veterinarian or nutritionist to make an informed decision.
2. Pellets, cubes, long stem?
Forage can be processed into a number of physical forms to enhance ease of storage or feeding convenience. Common physical forms include: pellets, cubes, and chopped (chaff) products. Misconception: Horses will choke on forage pellets or cubes. Fact: Horses, as well as humans, can choke on any food or feed that is not properly chewed prior to swallowing. Horses can be fed forage in many different physical forms without problems, as long as the rate of intake is monitored. Further, the processing of the forage will not increase or decrease the digestibility of the forage, and it will not influence digestive function. Solution: The physical form of forage should not prevent you from buying a certain variety of forage. Horses can eat many different physical forms of forage without digestive problems. Regardless of the physical form of forage, all horses should be gradually adjusted to any change in physical form.
3. Carbohydrate Content of Forage
Many horse owners have animals that are sensitive to the sugar and starch content of forage due to diseases such as insulin resistance and laminitis. Misconception: Alfalfa is high in sugar and starch, and is not appropriate for horses that are sugar-sensitive.
Fact: Alfalfa is actually lower in sugar and starch than many types of grass hay, as sugar is not the primary energy storage unit of legumes. The sugar content of hay is determined by many factors including variety of forage, growing conditions, and harvesting conditions. Cool-season grasses store carbohydrate as sugar and are naturally high in sugar. Solution: If your horse is sensitive to the sugar content of the diet, all forage should be tested for sugar content prior to feeding any variety. Simply believing that one type of forage is better than another is not the answer. 78

Farm Service Agency Makes Administrative Change to the Livestock Indemnity Program CANADIAN, Texas, April 24, 2018 – Starting today, agricultural producers who have lost livestock to disease, resulting from a weather disaster, have an additional way to become eligible for a key U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) disaster assistance program. USDA Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation Bill Northey announced an administrative clarification nationwide to the Livestock Indemnity Program. The committees may then use this certification to allow eligibility for producers on a caseby-case basis for LIP. “This change is part of USDA’s broader effort to better serve America’s farmers, ranchers and foresters through flexible and effective programs,” said Northey, who is in Texas today visiting with ranchers impacted by drought and wildfire. “America’s farmers feed our nation and much of the world, and throughout history they have known good years and bad years. But when disaster strikes, USDA is ready to step in and help.” LIP provides benefits to agricultural producers for livestock deaths in excess of normal mortality caused by adverse weather, disease or by attacks by animals reintroduced into the wild by the federal government. Eligible weather events include earthquakes, hail, tornadoes, hurricanes, storms, blizzard and flooding. Producers interested in LIP or other USDA disaster assistance programs should contact their local USDA service center.

FEI North American Youth Championships News
Lexington, Ky. – US Equestrian (USEF) is pleased to announce that the FEI North American Childrens, Junior and Young Rider Championships have been rebranded the Adequan/FEI North American Youth Championships presented by Gotham North (NAYC) and will include numerous improvements versus prior years. The NAYC for Eventing will be held in conjunction with The Event at Rebecca Farm (Kalispell, Mont.), an existing CCI3*, CCI2*, and CCI1*, as well as a CIC3*, from July 18-22, 2018. The NAYC for Jumping and Dressage will be held as a standalone event at Old Salem Farm (North Salem, N.Y.) from August 1-5, 2018. “Youth development is a major strategic priority for the FEI and for USEF. We are dedicated to working with our host sites and sponsors on making the 2018 “North Americans” the best Youth Championships ever. This is an important Championship and we are excited about many new changes being implemented this year,” said US Equestrian President Murray Kessler. “These championships are a necessity to the growth of equestrian sport and the development of our youth athletes. For most, this is their first time competing in a championship. This event gives them an early sense of what it is like to represent their country and compete as part of a team. It also may influence whether they decide to pursue a career in riding, so it is imperative that we invest and commit to its and their success.” A special USEF task force, which included representatives from Equestrian Canada, the Mexican Equestrian Federation and the relevant USEF affiliates, spearheaded the rebranding of the NAYC. This is a collective effort to revitalize these Championships and increase youth equestrian sport participation. Some of the improvements beyond the rebranding include: For the first time, prize money will be awarded by the organizing 82

Paris, France – With the FEI World Cup Dressage Final title on the line, Laura Graves and Verdades defended their 2017 second-place finish with a personal record score Saturday evening in the Freestyle to Music in Paris. Graves (Geneva, Fla.) and the 16-year-old KWPN gelding she owns with Curt Maes finished on a score of 89.082 percent, just behind the reigning World Cup Final champion Isabell Werth (GER). Werth and Weihegold OLD scored a 90.657 percent, while Germany’s Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Unee BB finished third on a score of 83.725 percent. “I am very proud,” said Graves. “It feels like first place, and the horse won’t know the difference, that’s for sure. Now I have a little homework in my book bag and we will take that back and be prepared for the next time ... I have to pay respect to my horse because without these top horses who want to do the job for us, who want to learn, who allow us to learn with them, none of this would be possible.” The atmosphere was electric as first Graves, and then Werth, put on a show for the ecstatic French crowd. Chasing the title, both of these powerful, yet poised athletes, gave it their best and turned out performances aimed at contesting the FEI World Cup record of 94.300 percent set by Charlotte Dujardin (GBR) and Valegro in 2014. In the end, it was Werth who came out on top, but Graves had much to be proud of. “Today, we are second,” she said. “But still a big personal best for us.” The Olympic bronze medalist began developing this particular free-

style test back in December 2017 to her previous music. The program was designed to be very competitive, difficult, and technical. The test included four pirouettes - two full double pirouettes and two that were a pirouette and a half. The combination performed its first full left piaffe pirouette into the full right piaffe pirouette inSaturday’s Freestyle. Watch Graves’s Freestyle test here. “He was super today,” continued Graves. “I was really pleased with the half-passes and keeping clean in all the changes. He really felt super rideable through the whole thing. We changed the music and I haven’t ridden to it since. We have added a second piaffe pirouette down the centerline. I was really proud of him doing the pirouette both ways and directly into the right pirouette. For me, that was really a highlight.”
Shelly Francis and Danilo
Fellow American Shelly Francis (Loxahatchee, Fla.) and Danilo, Patricia Stempel’s 14-year-old Hanoverian gelding, performed a freestyle to an acapella accompaniment, finishing 12th on a score of 74.189 percent. When asked about her first FEI World Cup Dressage experience, Francis replied, “It feels good. I feel like we redeemed ourselves a little bit from yesterday, so that is good. He really felt very good. He is really trying and likes his music, so it’s awesome. Photos by Shannon Brinkman

Beezie Madden Brings Home Second Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final Title
Americans finish one-two, with three in the top-four
Paris, France – The podium was decorated in stars and stripes Sunday evening as Beezie Madden and Breitling LS claimed victory at the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Final. Not far behind her, with only six penalties, fellow American Devin Ryan and Eddie Blue stamped their names on second. Madden (Cazenovia, N.Y.) finished on a single rail in the second round of the Final III, after jumping three previous clear rounds on Thursday, Friday, and again in the first of two rounds on Sunday evening. In fact, three U.S. combinations comprised the top-four, including the 2017 champion McLain Ward (Brewster, N.Y.) and HH Azur who finished fourth with 16 faults. Sweden’s Henrik von Eckermann and Toveks Mary Lou finished third with eight faults. The crowd held their breath in round one as Madden guided Abigail Wexner’s 12-year-old

Dutch Warmblood stallion clear in his very first major championship. Ryan (Long Valley, N.J.) and von Eckermann both jumped clean rounds before her, adding to the pressure heading into the final round of the evening. “[Breitling LS] felt great. I think this is the biggest course he has had to do,” said Madden. “He really rose to it. I think the main test on this day is how much gas in the tank you have left, and how much the horse is willing to dig in.
It [was] still really close, because Devin and Henrik kept the pressure on by going clear.” The four-time Olympic medalist and Breitling LS rode into the ring as the last combination in the second round. Ryan and Eddie Blue preceded them with a clear round, while von Eckermann dropped one rail. Madden and Breitling LS could afford one rail and a time fault without the threat of a jump off. They dropped one rail at the ‘b’ element of the triple combination at fence six, and the crowd held its breath in anticipation as they finished the course. As Breitling LS’s hind feet cleared the last fence, Madden had earned her
victory. Watch her winning ride here. When asked about hearing the one rail drop, Madden responded, “[I was] a little nervous, but I still thought my horse was jumping well, and all you can say at that point is keep it together and finish on four [faults] and try to get it done.” “It is always exciting to win a championship, and two of these is pretty amazing,” Madden continued. “I was so happy that my owner, Abgiail Wexner, was here today to see. I am so happy for her and the rest of my team, my husband John, and the horse, especially. Also, what a fantastic week for the Americans, with three in the top-four. It’s really exciting.” Madden won the Final in 2013 aboard Simon. The thrill of victory is just as sweet the second time around, both with horses Madden has had a strong partnership with. “It’s double exciting, I guess,” said Madden with a smile. “I won in 2013, and to win here with [this] horse – we really believed in him, but it took a little while for him to mature. So for him to come through today was fantastic. It has taken a little while to replace Simon and Cortes, but it actually happened a little quicker than I thought it might, so this is really exciting today. Photos by Shannon Brinkman

Hamilton and Makari Design Defend their USEF Advanced Single Horse Combined Driving National Championship Title
by Kathleen Landwehr
Nifty Hamilton and Makari Design

Raeford, N.C. – The USEF Advanced Single Horse Combined Driving National Championship came to a conclusion on Sunday with the cones phase at the Southern Pines Combined Driving Event (CDE). The athlete-and-horse combinations had to face Barry Hunter’s tough cones course to

determine the ultimate winner. Jennifer “Nifty” Hamilton and Makari Design kept their cool in the final phase to win back-to-back national champion titles. Hamilton (Alva, Fla.) and Makari Design began the national championship by winning the dressage and marathon phases with scores of 48.09 penalties and 81.92 penalties, respectively. They drove a great cones round to add 2.96 time penalties to their score and win the final phase. Hamilton and the 10-year-old KWPN gelding she owns with Milton Hamilton claimed their second national champion title after finishing on an overall score of 132.97 penalties. “The cones course drove very well, but it was pretty technical and tough to make the time on,” Hamilton explained. “It was great because it is the kind of course that will make you better.” Commenting on how Makari Design performed throughout the competition, Hamilton said, “He is definitely more connected than he has ever been, which allows me to ask for more. With more work and work on getting him stronger, he is going to be even better in a few years.” Jacob Arnold (Snow Camp, N.C.) and Uminco earned the reserve national champion title due to their strong performances. They were in third place after Friday’s dressage phase with a score of 52.89 penalties and then moved up to second place after tallying 82.53 penalties in Saturday’s marathon phase. Arnold piloted Leslie Berndl’s 17-year-old Royal Dutch Warmblood gelding around the cones course to have one ball down for 3.00 penalties. In their first year competing together, Arnold and Uminco garnered an impressive finish on an overall score of 138.42 penalties. Barbara Chapman (Metamora, Mich.) and Meara Beval were third in the national championship with an overall score of 149.25 penalties. Chapman and her 14-year-old American Warmblood mare scored 53.96 penalties in the dressage

News from the WPRA Board of Directors Spring Meeting
The WPRA Board of Directors is excited to announce changes to its internal processes to better serve our members. First, the Board is introducing a more focused committee structure. This structure will allow for more effective and in depth program analysis and evaluation. The Board believes this will improve the Board’s overall efficiency. Each committee is made
up of Circuit Directors, with the chairperson providing periodic updates to the full Board. The idea is to have smaller groups of Directors spend focused time “vetting” committee plans & issues, so when an item goes in front of the full Board, it is well thought out and decision making is more efficient. The committees are: Finals Rodeos (NFR, RNCFR and
World Finals) Barrel Racing Programs (Permits, Divisional Circuit, Futurity/Derby and Juniors) Roping Program PESI and the Equine Medications & Prohibited Substances Programs Brand Management Business Committee Second, the position of President will become an appointed position going forward. will have several benefits, which include improving the delivery of services to you, helping to more effectively manage committee and partner relationships and providing full accountability to the Board. It is important to remember that the President does not currently vote on Board matters. The WPRA is no different than many other not for profit organizations who are facing a declining pool of willing and qualified candidates for the President’s position. The structure is more in line with how other not for profit and for profit businesses work. The Vice President and Circuit Director positions remain the same; they are elected positions, and their role on the Board and their decision making remains unchanged. These internal changes will be implemented in mid-April. With that in mind, your Circuit Directors ask for your input regarding important topics that you would like the WPRA to address in order to keep elevating our sport on a professional level. In closing, the Board believes these changes will improve how the WPRA works internally and allow the WPRA to proactively meet the challenges and opportunities of an ever changing rodeo world.

Information about the National Issues
On April 18, the House Natural Resources Committee convened a “mark-up” to consider amendments to H.R. 3400, the Recreation-Not-Red Tape (RNR) Act, and ultimately passed the legislation by voice vote. A debate over an amendment offered by Rep. Elizabeth Cheney (R-WY) that would have removed a provision outlining a National Recreation Area System from the legislation preceded the vote on the final bill. The amendment, which Chairman Bishop opposed, failed by a vote of 27 to nine. Today’s committee action gives the RNR Act the green light to advance to the House floor, on a date to be determined. H.R. 3400 and its companion bill in the Senate, S. 1633, expand the scope of the National Forest System Trails Stewardship Act (PL 114-245), signed into law in late 2016. While the RNR Act focuses on streamlined permitting to access public lands, the
MAY 2018
bill includes provisions that would authorize the Department of the Interior, through the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), to enter into cooperative agreements with private parties to promote the role of volunteers in trail maintenance. The bill also authorizes the Department of Agriculture (USDA) and BLM to develop an interagency trail management plan that will assure uniform maintenance standards for trails crossing jurisdictional lines between the two agencies. During recent months, the scope of the bill has expanded to include provisions of the “GO Act,” which streamlines the permitting process for guides and outfitters operating on public lands; and the “21st Century Conservation Service Corps Act,” which promotes the employment of veterans and youth to work on public lands projects. New Breeders’ Futurity format to debut at 2018 APHA World Show
Larger classes and bigger payouts for young Breeders’ Trust-enrolled horses are coming to the 2018 APHA World Championship Show, thanks to a new format for the lucrative Breeders’ Futurity classes. The APHA Executive Committee approved the World Show Advisory Committee’s recommendation to eliminate the silver and bronze divisions within the Breeders’ Futurity program; now, all
Breeders’ Futurity-eligible horses will compete together in the Gold division to vie for larger payouts. These revamped Breeders’ Futurity classes are open to both Regular Registry and Solid PaintBred Registry horses that have been nominated to the program. Solid Paint-breds are also eligible to compete in most World Show challenge and sweepstakes classes. “The Breeders’ Futurity classes
are a showcase of the hard work our APHA breeders and owners put in to raising and training the upand-coming generation of talented Paint Horses,” APHA Director of Breeders’ Trust/Breeders’ Futurity Matt Arias said. “This simplified format and increased payouts give competitors even more reason to seek out a Breeders’ Trust horse as their next show partner.” The entry fee for each Gold Breeders’ Futurity class is $645. The first payment of $200 is due June 1, and the remaining entry fee is due August 1; late fees apply to entries not postmarked by the deadlines.

Rhodiola rosea Controls Cortisol
by Juliet M. Getty, Ph.D.
Cortisol -- the STRESS hormone. Although an important hormone, when consistently elevated it negatively impacts carbohydrate metabolism, causing blood insulin to rise, leading to fat storage and most critically, a possible laminitis attack. Controlling excess cortisol requires attention to what is bothering your horse. Consider supplementing the herb, Rhodiola rosea. It has a lot of research behind it[i] and has been discussed in several horse magazines including Horse Health, Natural Horse Magazine, Holistic Horse and The Naturally Healthy Horse. As an adaptogenic herb, it has the ability to normalize body systems. During stress, a cascade of events occurs where the hypothalamus portion of the brain stimulates the pituitary gland to produce adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which in turn, tells the adrenal gland to secrete cortisol. Rhodiola rosea calms the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal cascade that is stimulated during times of tension and may even be helpful for horses suffering from equine Cushing’s disease.[ii]

AQHA Member Satisfaction Survey More than 9,000 AQHA members responded to the AQHA Member Satisfaction Survey. All members who completed the survey received a special offer from the American Quarter Horse Store. The AQHA Member Satisfaction Survey closed on March 26, and we’re very pleased to report that we set a record, with 9,150 members completing the questionnaire. The average time to finish the survey was 18 minutes, so that translated to 2,745 volunteer service hours contributed to the Association by members. The responses are being compiled into a summary report, and the results of the survey will be shared with the membership soon. The survey, which was offered to all AQHA members across the globe, asked about the importance of various services provided by AQHA. The information gathered will be used to continue to improve the way members around the globe are served. The survey also collected important demographic data. “A goal of this survey is to better understand how to serve our members and to learn more about them so we can offer better programs and services,” said Craig Huffhines, AQHA executive vice president. All members who completed the survey received a special offer from the American Quarter Horse Store. “Again, thanks to everyone who participated in this important survey,” Huffhines said. “We look forward to sharing the data with you soon, and we are eager to use the data for the betterment of your Association.”

Signature Artist Named for 2018 America’s Horse in Art
The America’s Horse in Art Show & Sale returns in August 2018 to the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo and will feature signature artist Don Weller. The signature artist for the 11th annual America’s Horse in Art is Don Weller. Every year, one artist is given the honor of being selected as the America’s Horse in Art Show & Sale signature artist. When the art show and sale returns to the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in August 2018, the signature artist for the 11th annual America’s Horse in Art will be Don Weller of Oakley, Utah. “We are thrilled to be able to announce Don as the 2018 America’s Horse in Art signature artist,” said Anna Morrison, American Quarter Horse Foundation chief foundation officer. “The American Quarter Horse has long been a focus of Western art. We are honored to have such a talented artist as Don representing the show and the Western lifestyle” Weller grew up in Pullman, Washington, and started drawing horses and cowboys at an early age. 50-Year Breeders: An AQHA Legacy
The American Quarter Horse breeders who recently hit their 50th cumulative or consecutive year of breeding the world’s most versatile horse will be honored October 22 at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo. AQHA will honor American Quarter Horse breeders who have been breeding American Quarter Horses for 50 years at a special ceremony on October 22. The American Quarter Horse Association will honor this year’s 75- and 50-year breeders at a ceremony October 22 at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo. Each year, AQHA honors breeders who have dedicated their livelihoods to maintaining the integrity of the American Quarter Horse. These horsemen, horsewomen and their families see their
biggest accomplishments and proudest moments in the horses they breed. “It’s an honor to recognize the breeders who are the backbone of AQHA,” said AQHA Executive Vice President Craig Huffhines. “They have kept the tradition of the American Quarter Horse alive through their knowledge and dedication, and ensure that the success of the breed will continue for many generations to come.” This year, the honorees include one 75-year breeder, 10 Legacy breeders and 17 cumulative breeders.
