Cavalia Odysseo:

More magical, spectacular and grandiose than before!

Cavalia Odysseo - a breathtaking theatrical production that expands the definition of performance into an epic yet soulful experience, is returning to Arizona with a more impressive version of its exceptional show that marries the equestrian arts and stage arts. The integration of additional horses and artists has resulted in many magical, never-

before-seen moments. The production now features 70 magnificent horses of 12 different breeds and 50 talented artists. The equine performers include Appaloosas, Arabians, Canadian Horses, Warmbloods, Lusitanos, Paint Horses, Percherons, Hanoverian Crosses, Quarter Horses, Selle Francaises, Thoroughbreds and Spanish Purebreds (P.R.E.).

The $30 million breathtaking production has grown considerably in size and scope over the last few years without losing its soul. The stage itself is nearly twice its original size, enabling larger-scale and even more cutting-edge performances. For breathtaking perspectives, the new scenic space includes a full 3-story high mountain built with 10,000 tons

of earth. You really don’t need to go to Vegas to see a Vegas show while Cavalia Odysseo is in town. Cavalia Odysseo comes to life under the world’s largest touring tent housing the world’s largest touring production, portraying the tale of the horse and human journey through nature, blending enchanting, athletic equestrian arts, breathtaking stage arts and unique high-tech theatrical effects. Cavalia Odysseo’s signature White Big Top equals the dimensions of an NFL football field and presents incredible large-scale staging where spectators are mesmerized by the feats and beauty of the equines, riders, acrobats, aerialists, dancers and musicians. In this vast playground for 70 horses, the stage takes them and the audience literally through a variety of environments, weather conditions and terrain, reaching into the four corners of the earth with all the grace and fantasy needed for a once in a lifetime theatrical experience. One of the best opportunities to really immerse yourself in the show from the riders and the grooms point of view is the backstage tour of the stable as part of the Rendez-Vous VIP experience. As memorable treat and a terrific adventure, the VIP package also offers the best seats in the house, a full meal buffet dining before the show, open bar, desserts during intermission and a free program souvenir. Presented under its massive White Big Top in Scottsdale near Red Mountain 202 at N. McClintock Dr, this awe-inspiring ode to horse and man will take your breath away. Prepare to be wowed! Contact Your Representative to Suspend the ELD Mandate The American Quarter Horse Association requests a oneyear enforcement delay to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) electronic logging device (ELD) mandate. To read more about the implementation of Electronic Logging Devices, visit www. fmcsa.dot.gov and search “ELD Rule.” The American Quarter Horse Association is involved with requests to delay the impending Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) electronic logging device (ELD) mandate for one year. The mandate went into effect on December 18, 2017. At that time, livestock haulers were granted a 90day waiver to comply with the mandate, and that waiver will expire March 18, 2018. The rule limits the amount of time a commercial truck driver can drive and mandates a specific amount of off-duty/non-driving time, and requires the use of electronic logging devices to track the driving and non-driving times. While there are some exemptions from the ELD mandate for farm and agricultural hauling, many of the rigs used for hauling

36

horses and the activities horse owners participate in may not be exempt. AQHA and other livestock organizations are concerned about the regulation requiring 10 consecutive hours off duty and how that will affect the welfare of animals being transported. Livestock industry guidelines recommend that drivers avoid stops when hauling livestock, as stopping for long periods of time would have a detrimental effect on the animals being hauled. AQHA Executive Vice President Craig Huffhines commented on the National Pork Producer Council’s request to United State Department of Transportation for a waiver and exemption from the ELD mandate for livestock haulers. AQHA supports the exemption and is pursuing a one-year delay to address the additional issues

created by changes to 49 CFR Part 395. “AQHA members are involved in showing, racing, ranching, rodeos and recreation, and it is common for AQHA members to haul their horses interstate over long distances (much like other livestock haulers),” Huffhines said in his letter to the DOT. “We encourage the Department of Transportation to grant a oneyear enforcement delay followed by a waiver and limited exemptions from compliance with the December 18, 2017, implementation date for the final rule on ELDs and hours of service. This will allow the department the opportunity to take appropriate steps to alleviate any unintended consequences that this mandate may have on the hauling of horses or other livestock.” Overall, the Association believes more time is needed to reach out to the horse industry and ensure that industry education programs include ELD compliance and use. A one-year exemption will provide the horse

industry the opportunity to educate members and allow the opportunity for the FMCSA to develop livestockspecific solutions to the ELD and underlying hours of service concerns of the industry. What can members do? Currently there is language in the House passed Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill that would delay the implementation of electronic logging devices for commercial motor vehicles transporting livestock and insects. Please contact your Senators and Representative to support the ELD one-year delay to give the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration time to make the necessary adjustments to hours of service rules to address animal welfare concerns. (Their contact information can be found here.) Additionally, you can tune-in the American Horse Council webinar about the ELD mandate at 2 p.m. Central on February 12. The webinar will address the details of what the ELD mandate includes and who is required to have an electronic logging device. Register for the webinar here. If you can’t watch the webinar on February 12, it will be recorded and posted on the AHC website. To read more about the implementation of electronic logging devices, visit www.fmcsa.dot.gov and search “ELD Rule.” AQHA News and information is a service of the American Quarter Horse Association. Heart Gone Wild In 1857, Olive Oatman’s ghostwriter said this about her life story: “Much of that dreadful period is unwritten, and will remain forever unwritten.” Never say never. Here we are, 161 years since the Rev. Royal B. Stratton wrote those words, and we are ready to look at the brutal truth. Did Olive suffer a “fate worse than death” during her years of captivity among the American Indians? What follows is a closer look at the historical evidence.

A Continuous Picnic Goes South

Susan Thompson

“It was a continuous picnic and excitement was plentiful.”

Like so many bad trips, this one started out as a fun adventure. The so-called Brewster wagon train left Independence, Missouri, on August 10, 1850. Ninetythree religious pioneers, seeking a life in the Land of Bashan, headed west in 43 wagons, loaded down with eight months worth of provisions. “It was a continuous picnic and excitement was plentiful” is how Susan Thompson described the journey she took at the age of 17. She described the food prepared: “The stores of jerked meat, dried apples and berries, flour, corn beef, meal, preserved fruits, bacon and beans that we had prepared during the spring months....” The wagons stopped every two or three days, she added, “while the women baked and washed, the men hunted for antelopes or buffalos or smaller game.... Often, when we were camping near a stream, we had quantities of fresh fish.” “...In the evenings we gathered about the campfires and played games or told stories, or danced...the young folks danced in the light of the campfire and lard-burning lanterns.... There was plenty of frolic and where there are young people gathered together, there is always plenty of love-making.” Of course, the good times didn’t last. Petty infighting, alternative visions and illnesses took their toll. So much so that by the time the wagon train reached Socorro, New Mexico Territory, the ranks had been cut in half. Once those dwindling number of immigrants reached Maricopa Wells (south of presentday Phoenix, Arizona), the wagons had been reduced to three.

“...I know that something dreadful is about to happen.” —Roys Oatman, on the evening before the attack

13-year-old Olive Oatman found herself transformed into a Yavapai captive slave and eventually a Mohave mother of two. To learn more about her story, read True West’s March 2018 issue.

Three Wagons Passed Picacho

Only one wagon remained by the time the travelers reached the Gila Bend. The Oatmans struggled to cross, but they didn’t listen to the Talking Rocks— pictographs warned this was a place Indians gathered.

Feeding a Pregnant Mare

Choosing to breed a mare involves a multitude of decisions, some that require protracted thought (“What stallion should I choose?”) and others that can be made almost instantly (“Who will foal out the mare? Me, of course!”). Providing adequate nutrition for the mare as she transitions from one trimester to the next need not be difficult. Use the following six guidelines to stay on track, helping to ensure the delivery of a healthy, nutritionally robust foal. The fundamentals of feeding a pregnant mare are straightforward, though occasionally a scenario pops up that requires the help of a professional. 1. Familiarize yourself with body condition scoring. If you’re not proficient at body scoring yet, having a pregnant mare in your care is an opportune time to start. As pregnancy advances, the mare will inevitably gain weight, mostly in her abdomen. Key points of fat deposition, however, should remain similar throughout the duration of her gestation. A pregnant mare should be kept in moderate to moderately fleshy body condition throughout pregnancy. Body condition above a score of 6 only adds unnecessary weight to the mare’s limbs, and this could be difficult for a mare that has soundness issues, including arthritic changes from past performance careers. One exception to this point: if a mare is known to drop weight exceedingly fast at the onset of lactation, she might be kept at a slightly higher body condition score to help cope with the energy drain of milk production. 2. Provide vitamins and minerals. For the first seven or eight months of pregnancy, the mare requires no special upgrade in calories. She does, however, need sufficient intake of high-quality feedstuffs to maintain moderate body condition. The primary feedstuff should be good-quality forage in the form of pasture or hay, and a source of essential vitamins and minerals. These nutrients can come from a well-fortified textured or pelleted feed formulated especially for pregnant mares, or from a balancer pellet, which is a concentrated source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. If the mare needs the calories from feed to maintain her weight, be sure she consumes the recommended amount as provided by the feeding instructions. This way, her vitamin and mineral needs will be satisfied, as will those of her developing fetus.

60

3. Resist the temptation to overfeed. A common management mistake among well-meaning mare owners is overfeeding during the first seven to eight months of pregnancy. The fetus does not grow at an even rate during pregnancy; in fact, most fetal growth occurs in the final three months of gestation. Because of this, energy needs of the pregnant mare do not increase greatly until then. Keeping the mare in moderate to moderately fleshy body condition and supplying appropriate vitamin and mineral nutrition are the most important management tips during early pregnancy and midpregnancy. Mares should never be obese, as this can make delivery more difficult. 4. Reconsider energy levels in late pregnancy. During the last three to fourth months of pregnancy, the mare’s requirement for energy increases as the fetus grows. Providing the mare with high-quality forage on a free-choice basis can add calories to the diet. The mare should continue to be fed a feed designed for pregnant mares or a balancer pellet at the manufacturer’s recommended amount. Gauge the diet through regular, preferably weekly, body condition scoring. As the weight of the fetus and associated fluids increases, the abdomen drops, and gravity will sometimes cause the flesh to pull tightly against the ribs of the mare, allowing a hint of rib to show. This is normal, especially among aged mares with relaxed toplines that have had many foals, so it is essential that all regions of the body are inspected for fat deposition, such as the crest of the neck, along the shoulder bed, over the croup, and near the top of the tail. In addition to high-quality hay and well-fortified feeds, mares can be given extra calories through the provision of stabilized rice bran or vegetable oil (ideally soybean or canola oil). 5. Salt, water, and fescue. As with all horses, provide a pregnant mare with free-choice access to a fresh, clean water source and a salt block or loose salt. One type of hay or pasture to avoid is fescue, which is often infected with an endophyte that causes problems in pregnant mares, including prolonged gestation, difficult delivery, and lack of milk. Make sure all bedding is free of fescue, too. 6. Rely on an equine nutritionist. The fundamentals of feeding a pregnant mare are straightforward, though occasionally a scenario pops up that requires the help of a specialist.

Figuring out whose horse is whose—and the technology that makes that possible—was the subject of discussion for veterinarians, equine industry experts and health agency officials earlier this year in Denver at the "Equine Forum: Advancing ID, Technology and Electronic Health Records." The two-day forum, hosted by the National Institute for Animal Agriculture and the United States Animal Health Association, delved deep into the issues at hand for the next generation of equine identification and the opinions and needs of those involved. Microchips are an ideal industry choice for unique, permanent, individual identification of horses. Today's technologies for horse identification and traceability are "inadequate," and the solutions should be "industry-driven with limited government involvement," according to the forum's white paper. And microchips look best: "Advances in equine microchip technology make microchips an ideal industry choice for unique, permanent, individual identification of horses," according to the white paper. The forum touted the Jockey Club's recent success in getting 66 percent of last year's 23,000 foals voluntarily microchipped by horse owners. Equine microchips are too costly! Why don't all veterinarians, horse owners and equine groups jump at the microchip option for equine identification? This forum's experts called out cost as one problem, but said those who tout this too much may be taking advantage of the current poor state of equine ID. "Opposition to microchip use may be raised by those engaged in fraudulent business practices," said experts in the forum white paper. "Industry initiatives, such as chip-a-thon events, can decrease overall cost and will encourage participation." The white paper addressed horse owners' concerns about health issues associated with implantation: "Science has demonstrated that a properly implanted microchip may result in mild, transient soreness and localized inflammation, which resolve in three days or less." The bigger issue hindering success with microchips is data sharing: "Success in traceability of horses, during natural disaster, disease outbreaks or incidents of theft, is stymied by multiple data 'silos' of equine microchip numbers, a lack of data sharing and a lack of a centralized microchip database or search mechanism," the white paper states. Experts are calling for a solution similar to the American Animal Hospital Association Universal Microchip Pet Lookup maintained for small animals. Confidentiality was of particular concern to one veterinarian at the forum. "We're concerned about how much client-confidential information follows a horse for the rest of its life [with a microchip]." "The equine veterinary data silo contains a great deal of clientconfidential information," said Jim Morehead, DVM, of Equine Medical Associates in Lexington, Kentucky, in the forum white paper. "The veterinary community is concerned about how much information is put in the data silo and what information should follow that horse for the rest of its life." The white paper also describes new technology, a biothermal microchip, that could be used to rapidly scan implanted horses during a disease outbreak to ensure stress-free temperature monitoring.

CAVE CREEK RODEO DAYS TEAMS UP WITH NATIONAL NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION TO BRING AWARENESS ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

The Cave Creek Rodeo has recently teamed up with the Man Up Crusade® to bring “Purple Night” to the Cave Creek Rodeo on Saturday, March 24, 2018. The Man Up Crusade is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating public awareness on the issue of domestic violence. The Man Up Crusade chose professional rodeo and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) as its vehicle of choice to spread the word about the epidemic of domestic violence and teen dating violence. The organizers of the Cave Creek Rodeo, have dedicated Saturday, March 24th as Man Up

Crusade Purple Night. Across the nation, the color purple and the purple ribbon has been adopted to show support for victims and for advocates to honor those who have lost their lives at the hands of someone the once loved. On Purple Night all rodeo participants, fans and support personnel are encouraged to wear purple to show their support for this great cause.

The Man Up Crusade was founded in 2012 by Sheriff Kieran Donahue, Canyon County, Idaho and his wife Jeanie. Sheriff Donahue and his wife have been involved in the rodeo business for most of their lives in one facet or another and felt that the strength and old west ethics of

the American Cowboy and Cowgirl would be appropriate ambassadors to take on this difficult issue. “The cowboy is an iconic image of strength and fortitude that has transcended generations not just in the west but throughout the United States and many other countries,” says Donahue. “That is why I felt it was so important to involve this lifestyle from the very beginning. The cowboys and cowgirls can once again lead by example and together with rodeo’s enduring fans show that by working together we can make a difference.” Two of professional Rodeo’s long time national corporate sponsors, Wrangler® and Montana Silversmiths® became supporters of the Man Up Crusade in 2013. “Montana Silversmiths is proud to be a sponsor of the Man Up Crusade,” says Steve Miller, Vice President of Events, “We are humbled to have the opportunity to help bring awareness to this important issue. Secondly, it is just as important to understand that these programs are in need of financial assistance” says, Man Up Crusade Executive Director, Jeanie Donahue. Chrysalis of Phoenix, AZ will be the charity of choice for the Man Up Crusade Purple Day at the Rodeo. Domestic Violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior by an intimate partner against another. It is an epidemic affecting individuals in every community regardless of age, economic status, race, religion, nationality or educational background. Domestic violence results in physical injury, psychological trauma and sometimes death. The consequences of domestic violence can cross generations and truly last a lifetime. Equine stem cells rein in bacteria ITHACA, N.Y. – Researchers are exploring the use of stem cells to treat skin wounds in horses with techniques that may eventually translate to human patients.

Rebecca Harman and a team of researchers in the Van de Walle Lab at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine are finding that factors secreted by adult stem cells, also known as mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC), are able to fight bacteria commonly found in skin wounds. Bacteria often complicate the treatment of chronic skin wounds in humans, driving a need for new therapies that reduce bacteria in wounds. Although previous research has explored the therapeutic value of MSC in wound healing, few studies examined the potential for MSC to inhibit bacterial growth. Harman and the Van de Walle Lab are examining the antibacterial properties of equine MSC secreted factors, like antimicrobial peptides, to develop therapies for horses and to serve as a model for human studies. “This equine skin wound healing model offers a readily translatable example for MSC therapies in humans,” said Harman, a research support specialist at the Baker Institute for Animal Health. “Although mice are smaller and less expensive model organisms, the horse is more physiologically relevant when it comes to human skin wound healing.” MSC are already commonly used as a biologic therapy for equine joint and tendon injuries. Practitioners isolate MSC from bone marrow and inject them at injury sites. However, bone marrow extraction is an invasive technique, and injection-site complications – such as immune responses against the MSC – may reduce the efficacy of the therapy. Harman’s work sidesteps these issues by isolating MSC from blood rather than bone marrow, making the collection of MSC less invasive. In addition, she is applying the factors secreted by MSC, rather than the cells themselves, to the wounds, which reduces the chance of a host immune response against the therapy. MSC provide a range of benefits that extend beyond those of conventional antibiotics. Their secreted antimicrobial peptides can directly inhibit the growth of bacteria in skin wounds, and other secreted factors fight bacteria indirectly by attracting resident immune cells that are primed to clear pathogens. By further experimenting with different delivery methods, the lab’s research may make things easier on the practitioner as well. The antimicrobial peptide molecules secreted by MSC have proven to be fairly stable and can maintain their activity through a variety of conditions, such as extended freezing or being dried into a powder. This enables long-term storage options that are more efficient for practitioners than having to isolate MSC and collect secreted factors every time a wound needs to be treated. The research team will soon partner with Bettina Wagner, chair of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, to begin in vivo testing on her equine herd. Every summer, Wagner’s Icelandic horses naturally develop skin wounds as part of an allergic reaction. The wounds will be directly treated with the secreted factors of MSC and the lab will monitor bacteria levels over time to see if there are differences between treated and untreated wounds. “What we learn from the Icelandic herd about the wound-healing properties of MSC secreted factors could reasonably be tested in human medicine,” said Harman.

Companies matched donations made by attendees at 63rd annual American Association of Equine Practitioners convention January 4, 2018 Jeannie Jeffery, national director of equine sales for Henry Schein Animal Health, recently presented a check for $10,000 to Richard Mitchell, DVM, AAEP Foundation chairman, at the 63nd annual AAEP Convention. Henry Schein joined supplier partners Zoetis, Neogen, and Rood & Riddle to match donations from convention attendees in support of the AAEP Foundation’s “Collegiate Challenge.” Henry Schein Animal Health, the U.S. animal health business of Henry Schein Inc., recently led a fundraising effort that raised $10,000 for the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Foundation in support of its educational programming for the next generation of equine veterinary professionals. Henry Schein joined supplier partners Zoetis, Neogen, and Rood & Riddle to support the AAEP Foundation’s “Collegiate Challenge,” an initiative that encouraged convention attendees to make donations that support the following AAEP programs: student chapter activity; courses in dentistry, podiatry, and horses handling; and continuing education programs. Henry Schein and its supplier partners matched convention attendee donations up to a total donation of $10,000. Combined with Henry Schein and its partners’ donation, the AAEP Foundation raised more than $24,000 through the “Collegiate Challenge.” “We extend a heartfelt thank you to all who donated during the convention to the ‘Collegiate Challenge’,” Dr. Mitchell said.

Equine placentitis is on the rise

NO MINIMUM - SAME DAY OR NEXT DAY DELIVERY

A recent increase in nocardioform placentitis serves as a good reminder to review the best ways to catch this infection early and how to treat it. Causing 30 percent of perinatal loses, placental infection poses a critical concern for mares from conception to parturition.1 In her presentation at last November’s West Coast Equine Reproductive Symposium in Los Olivos, Calif., Margo Macpherson, DVM, MS, DACT, of the Department of Clinical Sciences at the University of Florida Center for Veterinary Medicine, noted that the University of Kentucky reported a significant spike in nocardioform placentitis cases affecting the 2011 foal crop. Macpherson has spent more than 10 years researching placentitis in mares. The following discussion, based in part on her November presentation, outlines the potential causes and treatments for this condition.

ARIZONA MOUNTED SHOOTING

Mounted Shooting Article 2, Equipment, Dress Codes, Clubs and formats.

Last month we talked about how to get involved in this exciting sport, this month we’ll talk about the equipment needed, dress codes and the various mounted shooting clubs and formats that they run. First and foremost is equipment, you’ll need a pair of guns which are .45 single action revolvers meaning the hammer needs to be pulled back and the trigger pulled for each shot. The most popular are Ruger Vaqueros or Ruger Montados which have a shorter barrel than the Vaquero and are easier to handle, there are others available mainly Cimarron, Uberti, Taylor Running Irons or even original Colts. You may want to consider having an action job done when you purchase your guns which will make operation of the gun smoother, it’s not totally necessary, but if you can afford it, do it! A couple of the local gun stores that carry mounted shooting guns and ammo are, Legendary Guns Inc. in Phoenix and Guns Plus in Surprise AZ, both of these stores have a great selection of guns to choose from and can refer you to a gunsmith if you desire an action job on your new guns. Mounting shooting blanks for 88

both practice and competition, horse training can be obtained from Bandit Blanks which is locally owned an operated, see www.banditblanks.com for additional information. You’ll need a gun rig (holsters) to wear which again is personal preference, some shooters like custom made holsters that are personalized to your specifications. There are numerous other holsters available for every budget, all you need to do is an online search for mounted shooting holsters and you’ll find some awesome rigs for every budget! Now that we talked about the guns and holsters, we need to think about the appropriate dress code. For events that are sanctioned by CMSA it is required that you wear either period correct clothing or rodeo gear, traditional western shirts, cowboy hat, western boots and chinks/chaps. These requirements are all detailed in the CMSA Rulebook in the section “Dress Requirements” you will receive upon joining CMSA. Some of the unaffiliated clubs do not require a dress code, jeans, t-shirts and ball cap is considered ok, but it’s best to check with the event organizer before a match.

There are currently 3 operating CMSA sanctioned clubs in Arizona, 1. ACMSA which was the 2nd mounted shooting club in the country. 2. Tombstone Ghost Riders and 3. New River Yacht Club. These 3 clubs require you to be a member of CMSA to be able to participate in their events. Details on the various clubs events such as format, payback, and side pots etc. are listed on the CMSA website at https://www.cmsaevents. com/events/ There are six levels or riders in the CMSA events level 1-6 (6 being the highest level obtainable). Mens 1-6, Senior Mens 1-6, Ladies 1-6, Senior Ladies 1-6, Wrangler Limited under 10 years old and Wrangler Open 10-11 years old. All new competitors start out as a level 1, to move to the next higher level you must have a specific number of qualified wins, for instance a level 1 competitor must have 4 wins in class where there were at least 3 other competitors. This gets more difficult as you move up as the requirements change regarding number of wins and how many other competitors are required to be in the class to be a “qualified” win. The requirements for move ups are

FEBRUARY 2018

detailed in the CMSA Rule Book you receive upon membership. Another option is the Clean Shooter Jackpot Club which is unaffiliated with CMSA and is a great venue to start out. There is no dress code at these events. These are typically 3 stage events. New shooters are allowed 45 seconds to complete the course and more experienced shooters must complete the course in 30 seconds. The main objective in these matches are to shoot all your targets. All usual CMSA penalties apply. This format has really taken off all over the country, as it is a low cost and lots of fun. This club does not provide the ammo as part of the entry fee, you are required to provide your own CMSA certified ammo. All the clean shooters split the pot at the end of the match. These events are a great way for the experienced shooters to practice and the new shooters to get the feel of a competition atmosphere but not have the pressure of a sanctioned match. Info on these matches can be found with a Facebook search of Clean Shooter Jackpot Group. Hope to see you out there!!! Vito 2 Guns

1987 sorrel overo stallion | Be Aech Enterprise (QH) x Miss White Trash | Bred by Bill Horn, Valley View, Texas | Owned by Lyons Legacy Performance, Cross Plains, Tennessee Representing the convergance of reining royalty in his pedigree, Trashadeous was a star who helped bring notoriety to horses with chrome who could spin and slide with the best. Bred and trained by National Reining Horse Association legend Bill Horn, Trashadeous harnessed his raw talent to leave an indelible mark on the reining world forever.

With his chrome shining like a hotrod, Trashadeous was a natural, but sometimes so powerful that he scared himself. By age 3, however, he settled in, claiming the reserve championship title at the 1990 NRHA Futurity just one-half point behind the leader, much to the chagrin of the crowd, who was pulling for the flashy colt to win. Piloted by Bill, Trashadeous earned a string of prestigious NRHA victories, including the 1991 NRHA Derby championship and winning the 1992 NRHA Open world championship. All told, “Trash” earned $131,000 in career earnings before retiring to the breeding shed. As a stallion, Trash sired 120 registered Paints that have earned $229,094 in lifetime earnings, according to Equi-Stat. Trash was inducted in the NRHA Hall of Fame in 1996, just three years after his dam and one year before his sire. The stallion was purchased by Lyons Legacy Performance in 2013, who proudly owned him until his death in January 2016 at age 28.

It’s the Miniature Horse March Mania at the 4th Annual Arizona Miniature Horse March Festival

Watching the live American Miniature horses going round and round the show ring is like seeing the carousel horses come to life on a merry go-round. The 31st Annual Arizona Touch of Class Miniature Horse Show will be bringing out the best little horses in Arizona and the South West as they compete with one another for ribbons and awards. The AZ Miniature Horse March Festival will be held March 29 through April 1, 2018, at WestWorld, 16601 N. Pima Rd., Scottsdale, Arizona. The events will begin daily at 8:00 am and run till 6:00 pm. Kicking off the three-show festival on March 29, Thursday, a one-day show for “R” registered Miniature horses will perform in Arena 3. A one-day AMHA show of the smaller type horse, measuring 34 inches at the mane and under, will be held on March 30, Friday, in the enclosed Equestrian Center. March 31 and April, Saturday and Sunday, the Touch of Class with hundreds of showy Miniature horses will celebrate its 31st year featuring prancing hooves, wishful whinnies, glittering-attired exhibitors, and polished harnesses and carriages, in the enclosed climate-controlled Equestrian Center which offers spectators a comfortable place to sit and watch their favorite classes. The shows will feature small horses pulling carts and carriages, horses maneuvering obstacles, leaping over jumps, racing roadsters, costumed minis and handlers, and running free in liberty classes, a few of the classics that will delight the viewers. Admission and parking for the spectators of the Miniature Horse shows will be FREE for the entire event. Visitors can also enjoy taking barn tours and seeing how the horses are groomed and made ready for their showing. In the coliseum food and refreshments will be available for the hungry attendees. Vendors of all sorts will be on the grounds showing interesting arts and crafts, apparel, and specialized products. Raffles and a silent auction, open to all, are added attractions. The Arizona Mini Mystique Precision Driving Horse Drill Team will perform Sunday, April 1, during the lunch break, showing off Miniatures pulling carts in synchronized patterns of movements to music in the show ring. It is aweinspiring to watch the trained Miniature horses as they pass by one another within feet and inches of each other. These special minis and drivers practice weekly throughout the year to perfect their performances. The Miniature Horse Festival will be held in conjunction with The Mane Event Horse Expo, March 30 – April 1, with Mane Event vendors in the north hall of the Equestrian Center and special, unique horse performances and clinics in the arena in the evenings. NATRC Convention in the Land of Enchantment

Beatrice, Nebraska, USA – January 23, 2018 – The nation’s premier competitive trail ride organization, the North American Trail Ride Conference (NATRCTM), is holding its 57th annual convention in Albuquerque, NM, on February 9-19, 2018.

Seminars and fun activities are open to anyone interested in distance riding or in meeting likeminded horse folks. The convention offers tours of unique cultural historic sites like a Spanish mission church, old town Albuquerque, a pueblo and even old Route 66! Attendees can experience the Flamenco dance, song and guitar in an intimate traditional setting. The seminars range from learning the many aspects of judging by asking members of a veterinary and horsemanship judge’s expert panel, mapping and using GPS (global positioning system), improving relationships with horses from the inside out, and demonstrations on “bomb proofing” a horse to staying comfortable in the saddle during a long day’s ride. There will be vendors, a silent auction of numerous horse related items and décor, and a raffle of gift cards from The Riding Warehouse. NATRC, the United States’ oldest and largest long distance competitive trail ride organization, is open to all equine breeds and disciplines. It offers rides with several divisions providing challenges for those new to the sport as well as for experienced competitors. The rides and clinics help to strengthen horse and rider partnerships. NATRC invites folks to see what they and their horses can achieve and even offers free membership to those new to the organization. www.natrc.org. 94

While it seems as though this would lead to lower weaning weights, it makes more sense for our operation. By avoiding feeding hay or feeding less hay by calving later – made possible because the cow’s needs are at its peak when the grass is at premium nutrition – we are leaving more room for profit. When inputs are factored in, the difference in sale prices have been minimal for any lighter-weight calves. It started as a minor brush fire first spotted in the late morning of Dec. 7 in northwest San Diego County. Fanned by unusually strong Santa Ana winds, with gusts of more than 60 miles per hour, within 30 minutes the fire had consumed 50 acres. Within the next hour it spread to 500 acres. By early afternoon, the blaze had expanded westward to the San Luis Rey training center, where about 450 Thoroughbred racehorses were stabled. As the fire encroached, horsemen did what they could to protect their barns, but the trainers, assistant trainers, foremen, and grooms on the scene faced agonizing decisions as the fire moved across the property in a scattershot fashion, from hillside to barn roof, sometimes by way of blazing palm trees, depending on where the windswept sparks might take. Do they leave the horses in their stalls a little longer, in case help arrives, or do they let them free to fend for themselves, despite the many risks of allowing animals that have been contained and supervised their entire lives to run wild? And how long should the humans even stay to care for these horses when their way out could be cut off? Most of the horsemen stayed, risking their own well-being in hopes of saving their charges. When no other options were left, stall doors were opened and horses were pulled out, let loose to find their own way on the training track, the infield, or the burning barn area. Leo Tapia, a groom for trainer Peter Miller, broadcast live video on Facebook that showed the horror as it unfolded. Tapia ran into one of his barns, unlatching stall guards and urging horses to flee, even as smoke consumed the shedrow and the 23-year-old Mexican choked for air. “I was a little bit afraid, but I didn’t let myself think about it,” Tapia told Chelsea Hackbarth of Paulick Report. “I just felt like my heart wanted to get out of my chest. But I couldn’t leave without helping my horses, and those of my friends.” Outside the barn, Tapia continued to document the scene as scores of frightened, loose horses ran in search of safety. The harrowing 10-minute video has more than 256,000 shares and 15 million views. As reported by Jeremy Balan of BloodHorse this week, Martine Bellocq raced into her burning barn attempting to save an unraced 2-year-old, Wild Bill Hickory. The trainer suffered third-degree burns over 60 percent of her body and was unable to rescue the colt. Fellow trainer Manuel Calvario, stabled in the same barn with Bellocq, saw his neighbor engulfed in flames and snuffed them out with a blanket, perhaps saving her life. Pierre Bellocq Jr., who had been loading another of their horses onto a van, returned to find his wife slumped on the ground, still injured and crying for Wild Bill Hickory. Martine was airlifted to UC San Diego Medical Center, Hillcrest, and placed in a medically induced coma. She remains under significant sedation and can’t speak. Two additional horsemen suffered serious injuries—trainer Joe Herrick sustained second- and third-degree burns on his face, neck, arms, and hands while pulling 2-year-old filly Lovely Finish from his burning barn, and outrider Les Baker broke nine ribs and suffered facial lacerations when trampled by a fleeing herd. Forty-six horses died from the fire, according to the California Horse Racing Board. Nine of San Luis Rey’s 15 barns were destroyed. About 250 horses from San Luis Rey were evacuated to Del Mar, which provided sanctuary to about 800 horses total.

Pain relief for your horse. Neprofin is a revolutionary new pain treatment for the alleviation of lameness in horses. Originally formulated to work on the same scientific principles as NSAID’s and phenylbutazone (bute), these enzymes have since proven effective on sprains, fractures, rheumatoid arthritis and osterarthritis. Neprofin assists with tissue repair, reduces fluid formation, accelerates the healing process and can be adopted as a replacement therapy in pathological conditions.

This mare has an old injury to the lateral side of her right front cannon bone, with deep scarring. There was extensive soft tissue damage which restricted her movement, causing a shortness of stride. This image shows visible enlargement of the soft tissue injury by its heat signature from recurrent inflammation. Note that the right leg is visibly larger than the left leg.

Following 8 weeks of Neprofin administration, this mare showed a marked improvement. Heat signatures have returned to normal, showing virtually no signs of inflammation or pain. Neprofin was able to digest and eliminate the inflamed scar tissue mass, which had caused lameness and a shortened stride. Note that both legs are now identical in size and shape. The mare is now sound and bears weight evenly on both front legs.

New Owners Plan to Restart Racing at Yavapai Downs

Ownership group sees potential to draw from growing area.

By Frank Angst COURTESY OF THE BLOODHORSE.COM Phoenix-based ownership group that also includes Kentucky Downs president Corey Johnsen has purchased Yavapai Downs with plans to restart racing at the Prescott Valley, Ariz. track. The real estate investment and development company JACOR Partners announced at the Jan. 11 Arizona Racing Commission meeting that its affiliate J and J Equine Enterprises has closed on the purchase of the 120-acre track property. The new owners include JACOR principals Tom, Dave, and Mike Auther and Joe Jackson, along with Johnsen. Yavapai features a 90,000 squarefoot clubhouse/grandstand and accommodations for 800 horses. The property was purchased for $3.22 million out of federal bankruptcy court, with the new owners planning to invest millions of dollars worth of improvements. Johnsen said the next step will be to get a racing license approved through the Arizona Racing Commission, as well as get a license to simulcast races. Part of the success at Kentucky Downs followed the addition of historical racing games at the Franklin, Ky. track but the initial plans for Yavapai do not include any push for any added gaming. "The racing is what everything is based on. To go a step further than that and speculate on any added gaming is premature because frankly we need to get our racing permit first," Johnsen said. "Then we'll look at all avenues to increase revenues for Yavapai Downs and the industry." Johnsen said without a racing permit in place, it's also difficult to say when racing may begin at the track but the group is anxious to move forward with plans. Yavapai has not conducted live racing since 2010. Daily purses at

FEBRUARY 2018

that meet averaged $32,000. Tom Auther said they plan a first-rate facility that will draw on the area's growing population. "This track is a real gem," Tom Auther said. "Yavapai Downs is a great structure that will be a fun place to offer summertime horse racing in Arizona with all the amenities, attractions and great summer temperatures associated with Prescott. Arizona has a population of more than seven million and is one of America's fastest-growing states, and Prescott and the surrounding area is rapidly expanding with a population approaching 300,000. Johnsen's roots in racing took hold in Arizona, where he worked as a backstretch groom while attending Arizona State University. His first job out of college would be in marketing and public relations at Turf Paradise in Phoenix. "The Arizona horse racing scene holds great sentimental value for me, and it's very gratifying to be part of re-establishing a year-round racing circuit," Johnsen said. "We look forward to improving purses for all the hard-working horsemen, encouraging the Arizona-bred program that has produced so many solid runners, and providing an entertaining product for the many dedicated horseplayers. "I am honored to be a part of Yavapai Downs. I am very impressed with the JACOR Partners team, who are Arizona natives with a lifetime of experience in the state in many business deals. Their commitment to making this happen has been extraordinary." Veteran racetrack executive Ann McGovern will be the general manager, the new ownership said. McGovern has been in senior management at Oklahoma's Remington Park, Texas' Sam Houston Race Park and New Mexico's Ruidoso Downs. Dennis Moore, the track superintendent at Santa Anita Park and Del Mar and who has consulted on tracks around the world, will oversee renovation of the racing surface.

Lost a Loved One January 27

It is with a heavy heart that we say good bye to Dr. J. Brent Rollins today. Most horse people will remember Dr. Rollins as the founding father and senior partner (retired) of CVMC. But to many of us, he was so much more. JBR was a man that lived and taught by example. Whether we realize it or not, JBR showed us what stepping out in faith looks like. He set an example of how to balance hard work with family and faith. I will forever hold on to some of his words: “You just have to make it happen.” “If both people in a relationship focus on trying to make the other happy, it will be a successful relationship.” and “Do you want half of my PB and J? Most of us have a professional mentor or two, but fewer of us get the

opportunity to work with someone who lived to be an example of everything good; someone whom you are a better person for knowing. For me, that person is Dr. J B Rollins, who I was lucky to have called my business partner, but honored to have called him my friend. In Loving Memory, C. Renee Andrea, DVM, Dipl. ACVS

Even Non-GMO is Not Necessarily Safe

By Juliet M. Getty, Ph.D.

Non-GMO. Do you know what it means? And is it better than GMO? It must be, right? Otherwise, it wouldn’t be displayed on food-labels as something to brag about. But is it the same as organic? Is organic better than non-GMO? So many questions! Confused? What does GMO mean? MO stands for “genetically modified organism.” GMO foods have been genetically engineered to withstand certain conditions or chemicals, in particular, herbicides that can tackle weeds -- one of the most significant problems that farmers face. The development of plants that could survive when sprayed with a weed-killer was a dream come true for farmers desperate to find a solution to this overwhelming problem. The most dramatic and frightening of all GMOs are those that are “Roundup Ready.” These GMO crops can be sprayed with the herbicide, Roundup (Monsanto), dramatically increasing productivity by killing the damaging weeds without harming the plant. Sounds wonderful on the surface, that is, until you dig deeper. Glyphosate is the concern The active ingredient in Roundup is glyphosate. The research on this herbicide is extensive, and troubling. Glyphosate was thought to be nearly non-toxic, however researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology determined that glyphosate is a major contributor to health issues including the obesity epidemic in the US. The brain can also be affected, increasing the incidence of autism, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and depression.[i] Glyphosate takes the place of glycine in body proteins. Glyphosate is a synthetic amino acid similar to glycine. Acting as a glycine analogue, it may be substituted for glycine in proteins throughout the body, linking it to an extensive list of diseases including gluten intolerance and celiac disease, kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, reproductive issues, diabetes, respiratory disorders, adrenal insufficiency, hypothyroidism, osteoporosis, chronic inflammation, and cancer.[ii] Glyphosate alters the uptake of minerals. When a plant is sprayed with glyphosate, it binds metals within the plant’s tissues, impairing the micronutrient content of the plant. The leaf concentration of minerals including iron, manganese, copper, zinc, magnesium, and cobalt have been shown to decrease in plants sprayed with glyphosate.[iii] There is discussion that glyphosate can chelate minerals inside the body, reducing their bioavailability for biochemical functions, creating disease states in humans and animals. [iv] The extensive use of glyphosate on our crops is leading to herbicidal resistance. To counteract this, more is being used,[v] and different chemicals are added to the mix. And look for new GMOS to be developed by agrochemical companies.[vi] A disturbing trend indeed. This is a vastly complex subject. I am only beginning to scratch the surface. It is also controversial which makes it difficult to differentiate between truth and propaganda. Consequently, I mostly rely on peer-reviewed research studies to offer the best information available. What about your horses? I know you’re thinking that this information applies to you and your family. But let’s focus on the foods that your horses consume. Since there are GMO versions of soybeans, corn, alfalfa, canola, cottonseed (used for oil) and sugar beets, as well as GMO wheat in development, there is no doubt that your horse is affected. Yet, there is little research that specifically looks at glyphosate’s impact on horse’s health. There was a recent study using dairy cows in Denmark,[vii] where it was shown that glyphosate intake significantly decreased their serum levels of cobalt and manganese. Additionally, they showed elevated creatine kinase (CK) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) enzyme levels. CK is indicative of tying up (rhabdomyolysis) and possible kidney failure. Increased ALP indicates potential liver damage and bile duct blockages. In 2006, over 1000 racehorses, between two and three years of age, were examined for health problems.[viii] More than half of them were found to suffer from inflammatory airway disease, joint problems, and fractures. It has been argued that high performance demands or the overuse of the drug Lasix may contribute to these conditions, but there is mounting evidence that glyphosate exposure may be a significant cause of their deteriorating health.[ix]

Most soybeans in the US are genetically modified to be Roundup ready. It has been determined that GMO soybeans have substantial amounts of herbicide residues.[x] Soy is a common ingredient in most commercial horse feeds, used as soybean meal, along with its oil (often denoted as vegetable oil) and hulls.

Getty GMO con’t from page 108 Beet pulp is a byproduct of the sugar beet industry. I have often recommended it as an excellent carrier feed when adding supplements to the horse’s diet. However, most beet pulp comes from GMO sugar beets and may very well be a concern. Does that mean that non-GMO products are safe? Not necessarily! The non-GMO label is not a measure of safety in and of itself. True, GMO crops are more likely to be sprayed with Roundup – that is the very purpose of the genetic modification. It is a good start, but not a guarantee since non-GMO crops, unfortunately, can also be sprayed with Roundup. Glyphosate is sprayed as a preharvest desiccant.[xi] This process, known as desiccation, involves spraying Roundup on the crops a few days before harvesting. It kills the foliage and accelerated the drying of the grain. Using glyphosate on wheat, barley, or oats, for example, two weeks before harvest, allows for increased product uniformity and yield, and improved harvesting efficiency, especially in humid environments.[xii]

Sugar cane, used for your table sugar as well as molasses, is often sprayed with Roundup. But the most alarming crop is your horse’s forage. Your horse’s hay may be the cause of unexplained health issues. According to federal regulations, animal feeds, grass hays, and alfalfa hay are permitted the highest levels of glyphosate that any other food group. [xiii] Organic ensures no glyphosate According to the USDA,[xiv] organic crops must start with organic seeds and be grown without the use of synthetic chemicals, irradiation, sewage sludge, or genetic engineering. That means that to be certified as organic, it must also be non-GMO! And since non-GMOs do not necessarily protect you against glyphosate contamination, you are much better off seeking organic products. Nearly 80 USDA certifying agencies can authorize farms and businesses as meeting USDA organic regulations.[xv] One such agency, the California Certified Organic Farmers, allows products to be labeled, “Organic is non-GMO and more,” when they meet certification guidelines.[xvi]

Risk Factors for Equine Metabolic Syndrome

Page 28

Equine metabolic syndrome, or EMS, is a term that refers to a set of factors including obesity, insulin resistance, and a tendency toward laminitis. Because laminitis causes intense pain and often signals the end of a horse’s useful life, it would be helpful if owners were aware of signs and risk factors for EMS in its beginning stages. Detected early, EMS might be managed to minimize the likelihood that a horse would actually develop laminitis. Because laminitis causes intense pain and often signals the end of a horse’s useful life, it would be helpful if owners were aware of signs its beginning stages. Clinical signs such as Wickenburg Area Real Estate Showcase and risk factors for EMS Junein2017 abnormal lipid and insulin levels can be found only by having a veterinarian draw a blood sample for analysis. However, some physical signs and characteristics can be seen by owners. These include obesity or a high body

condition score; a cresty neck, even if the horse’s body does not appear excessively fat; little or no exercise; previous bouts of laminitis; and a high intake of forage and/ or grain. Many cases of EMS are seen in horses that have finished growing but are not very old, approximately 5 to 8 years of age. Ponies and horses from heavier-bodied breeds are diagnosed with EMS more frequently than lighter-built equines. Owners who see one or more of these signs in their horses should recognize that equines with these characteristics may be at higher risk of laminitis than those in the general population. Checking with a veterinarian is a good idea, as this professional can use the results of blood tests and a physical examination to help diagnose EMS. In order for obese horses lose weight, veterinarians and equine nutritionists may suggest cutting out grain and calorie-laden treats, switching the horse from topquality hay to forage with a lower carbohydrate content, and increasing the horse’s exercise program if this is possible. While these steps can’t guarantee that a particular horse that shows signs of EMS can avoid laminitis, it may prevent the disease in some equines. Whether or not a horse has EMS, some added benefits of losing excess body weight are better exercise tolerance, more energy, and reduced strain and wear on joints. Micro-Max, a product developed by Kentucky Equine Research, can be used to optimize nutrient intake in horses and ponies that have been diagnosed with EMS. This product provides vitamins and trace minerals in a low-starch, low-calorie form for equines that are overweight or consuming forage-only diets. In Australia, horse owners should choose Gold Pellet for the same effect.

On December 20th 2017 Handlebar J’s hosted a Remembering Mayor Herb Drinkwater gathering who passed 20 years ago. “Mr. Scottsdale,” Mayor Herb Drinkwater, served the citizens of Scottsdale 24 years, 8 as City Councilman and 16 as Mayor. He would say “Serving the citizens of Scottsdale is the greatest job in the world.” He personified the city’s “West’s Most Western Town” image by dressing in Western suits, a bolo tie, and cowboy boots. Everyone considered him a friend. One of Arizona’s most popular politicians, he received a 96 percent citizen approval rating. During his tenure, he transformed the city into an economic powerhouse with more jobs than workers. In 1993, Scottsdale was named “America’s Most Livable City” by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which validated Mayor Drinkwater’s vision that small town values could still exist and pull citizens together in a big city atmosphere. His legacy includes Mayo Clinic Scottsdale, Tournament Players Club, and the All-Arabian Horse Show. Voters showed their support by approving a bond issue to build a new Scottsdale Stadium and expand the Civic Center Library. He worked with the City Council to expand the Civic Center Mall with its fountains and bridge that connect City Hall to the Scottsdale Center for the Arts. Under his leadership, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve was established. In 1959, he married his high school sweetheart, Jackie. She taught sixth-grade in the Scottsdale School District, while he was assistant business manager. He later owned Drinkwater’s in Sundown Plaza. Their two children, Jamie and Mark, continue the Drinkwater legacy as community and business leaders. Clyde “Ross” Morgan was selected through a competitive process with other well-known American sculptors to create the Drinkwater sculpture. The 7.5-foot sculpture of Mayor Herb Drinkwater cuts an imposing figure wearing a Stetson, Western style jacket and blue jeans, ostrich boots, a bola tie, and belt buckle inscribed with his name, leaning against a fence post. Remembering Mayor Herb Drinkwater By his side is “Sadie”, the family’s German shepherd. The sculpture was commissioned through donations from hundreds of citizens in appreciation of his 24-year service to Scottsdale. Today, family friend Brent Barker markets the family estate, a 6.8-acre horse property that embodies the spirit of the former Mayor. Mr. Barker says “the property is perfectly suited for the artist, entrepreneur and or horse enthusiast. The home backs to the McDowell Mountain Preserve adjacent to the world class Troon Golf Club in North Scottsdale...it has a feeling of Santa Fe offering magnificent views of the Pinnacle Peak. An investment in personal colors, fixtures and updated appliances the buyer can expect to double market value of this property in a community of 3-5M homes.” For more information call Brent at 602-697-7769. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – High school seniors who are members of the National Reining Horse Youth Association (NRHyA) are encouraged to apply for scholarships made possible by the Reining Horse Foundation (RHF). Applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2018, for consideration. At least seven academic- and need-based scholarships will be awarded by an independent committee based upon applicants’ academic achievement, financial need, future goals and involvement with horses and NRHyA.

At this time, the scholarships range from $750 to $2,000, with three awarded at the highest level. Recipients in 2017 included Terri-June Granger of Ala., David Gringeri of Vt., Nicholas Muir of Wash., Quinn Sutherland of Mont., Megan D’Andrea and Morgan Knerr of Ohio, and Jarid Walton of Mich. Previous recipients are eligible to reapply. Chairman of the foundation’s Scholarship Committee is NRHA Vice President and Foundation Board member Mike Hancock. He said, “The foundation is committed to this scholarship program and what it means to our youth and their future.
