HOLIDAY BILLY

The Irreverent Cartoons of Bob Boze Bell Ah, winter time in the Wild West when outlaws like Black Jack Ketchum and Billy the Kid return to the warmth of a special hearth where a bowl of hot, green chile and an even hotter senorita abide.

Artwork ••• 1 Black Jack Ketchum and members of the Wild Bunch drag a safe through the snow to their outlaw hideout.

2 Billy the Kid heads out from Anton Chico on a cold

December morning.

3 Halfway out on the flats towards Puerto de Luna, the Kid

takes a detour.

4 Riding up over the pass at Glorieta, the Kid trudges on through the deep snow. 5 Billy arrives at his querida’s casita on the edge of Lamy,

New Mexico where he enjoys a bowl of hot green chile. 26

ARENA ROCK REMOVAL IN ARIZONA About Rock Relief

HOW IT WORKS

We’ll pull into your existing arena and allow Rockyln to do her thing…Pick up rocks. With her pristine design, she is able to pick up a variety of rock sizes, as small as 3/8 going up to 6 inches deep of the surface sifting through without removing your footing.

Here at Rock Relief, we pride ourselves for having the one and ONLY Rock Relief machine. Unlike “those other companies” that claim to have an arena rock removal machine, Rocklyn is designed to remove rock specifically from arenas. She is the Queen of the arena. This is why we have a superb reputation.

Rocklyn employs a sifting technology used to lift the existing footing from your arena on to a special/secret screen. The screen then sifts the unwanted rock from the arena, while the footing returns to the arena, and the remaining debris is deposited in the bucket.

Meet Rocklyn... She’s a badass arena rock removal machine designed with few moving parts and extremely durable components.

We’ll gather the rock and neatly pile it up for easy removal. She’s built of steel to ensure durability and consistency.

horse people. We are just thankful that our dear Penni made it out of this terrible disaster alive!!

In this crazy world of horses.. sometimes we are lucky to know some truly wonderful and kind people.... this lady is one of them. Penni Gerardi has always been there for so many people.. never a bad word .. only love and kindness. Well, now she needs our help.

From her sister Wendy:

The fire has totally destroyed the ranch she has worked on for many years, the barn, and all of her tack..she managed to save all of her horses but one. The firemen and police would not let her back in. She barely made it out alive and all she can think of is that one horse that she couldn’t save. So, please send her words of encouragement and love and we will be collecting donations of tack, and anything else she could use. She is currently stabled at Day Creek Ranch.. I know there are no better caring people out there than

Go Fund Me Account: Penni Gerardi

DECEMBER 2018

No one can even imagine the pure hell that my dear sister Penni went through in the very early hours of Friday morning. She is a true hero, saving nearly 20 horses with only one person, another hero, Ray, to help her. On her last evacuation run she literally had to drive through a firestorm, but there was no going back for the few horses left for lack of trailer space...the fire engulfed the ranch. Everything is gone, the house and barn. Penni had no time to take any of her tack, all of her saddles and bridles burned to ashes, saving the horses was her only focus. It’s a miracle that she and Ray and so many horses survived! And yet Penni is suffering terrible grief over the one horse who perished. Penni dearly loves every one of them...

Colin Dangaard Saves Ranch & Company in Malibu Fire

By Pat Fish

When the fires roared down onto Malibu, one resident stood his ground.

78 year old Australian saddle maker Colin Dangaard refused

orders to evacuate his property at the intersection of Mulholland Drive and Kanan Dume Road.

Together with his his tenants he fought a 24 hour battle and saved not only his own but also the properties of 3 neighbors. It got down to buckets of water pulled up out of the swimming pool being dashed on flare-ups, but they succeeded. The next day when the worst had passed over a group of his tenants went out for food and supplies‌ they were refused re-entry on pain of arrest as looters, even though their IDs show this is their legal address. Then one tenant’s dog ran off, and the last 3 of them went to try to find it, and were also forced to leave the area on threat of arrest. Now Colin is alone at the property. The danger of flare-ups is still ever-present, and he has no one to take shifts with him throughout the night. This self described Aussie Madman is not giving up, but is in need of help and none is being allowed through. He would like very much to give an audio interview to describe his experience, and to encourage authorities to allow his tenants and employees onto his property to support him.

By Donna McCarthy- Scott To all of you that know and love a wild Aussie also known as Colin Dangaard, it is with much pleasure and laughter that I pass along his personal greetings to you all. Colin is fine, the ranch is fine, the horses are fine and oh, does he have a tale to tell! Not being the story teller Colin is, of course (who is!) I will do my best to convey what he told me. Mind you it's taken 2 days, multiple texts and calls back and forth due to lousy cell reception caused by that monstrous #WoolseyFire for Colin to get this word out. Tonight he solved the

50

Here's a little inspiring story about our friend Colin

communication challenge by jumping on his great Steed and galloping to the top of his beloved Malibu Hills until we had a clear connection! As most of you know, Colin took in tenants following the death of his beautiful wife, Linda Fox Dangaard, to keep the lights on and his mortgage paid while he reinvented himself...again. The night before the fire hit Malibu he gathered his tenants together and told them he was absolutely not losing his ranch and their home to a mere fire. He

suggested that anyone who wanted to leave in advance of the fire storm he knew was coming should pack up and go, promising no hard feelings and that they would have a place to come back to when the danger had passed. Of his 13 tenants, 5 chose to stay and make the stand with him after he said if you stay you must acknowledge him as the "Captain of this ship" and follow his instructions without question. He had a plan! (Can't you just hear him, lol) He told me the 5 that stayed were

DECEMBER 2018

LINDA AND COLIN IN MALIBU.

SHE WAS BRILLIANT AND BEAUTIFUL, THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE

incredibly courageous and committed. The next morning he awakened to thick, rolling black smoke. He marshaled his troops and told them, we have more heart than this fire has heat, we have 25,000 gallons of water, buckets and wet towels , he then scowled and told the Fire it was a bad boy and commanded it bow to him! After 8 harrowing hours the fire did just that. Colin not only saved his ranch but the ranches of his two nearest neighbors along Kanan who had fled. That not being enough for our crazy Aussie friend, he then loaded up buckets of water into his beat up old "dog car", and drove to Thrift Road where he proceeded to save 2 other ranches using the wet towels and water from a jacuzzi!! It turned our Colin and his crew of badass tenants were all that remained in his neighborhood. He was going to do everything he could to save as much as he could. I want you to know all this was conveyed to me with much gusto and laughter as he sat upon his horse in his Malibu Hills but also with great seriousness about being grateful to those who stood with him. He told me also how grateful he was at the messages and concern of you, his friends, and was anxious that I would get this posted so you knew he was happy and safe. I, too, was worried about our friend but never doubted he would do just what he did. Once upon a time, in a land not so far away in Malibu I stood shoulder to shoulder with him fighting a fire that burned to his Seadrift Cove home. Then as he just did, we fought with trash cans, and buckets filled with water and wet towels and beat that fire into submission. Somehow Colin's determination washes all over you and fear is vanquished. CoINl wants everyone to know once the power is on he will be right back in business. Please pass the word.

Meet the Heroes Who Saved Malibu's Horses From a Fiery Inferno Photo: HSVC

By Maddie Stone

As residents of Malibu fled their seaside city in droves to escape a raging wildfire on Thursday, volcanologist Jess Phoenix hitched her two-horse trailer to her Ford F-250, hopped on the 101-freeway, and headed straight for the inferno. There were animals that needed rescuing.

As a trainer and proud owner of two horses, Phoenix knows a thing or two about helping the animals out in difficult circumstances. As a scientist who’s done field work around active volcanoes, she knows her way around a fiery disaster zone (although fires and volcanoes are different). And as an Angeleno deeply embedded in Southern California’s equestrian community, she knew that some of the more than 100,000 people ordered to evacuate as the Woolsey and Hill fires tore through Malibu and surrounding areas on the night of November 8 had equine companions in need of help. In other words, driving into the smoldering heart of horse country as flames raced down the hillsides wasn’t much of a choice. “The fire was coming onto the highway, and cop cars were blowing past me with their lights on,” Phoenix told Earther. “It was insane.” Phoenix is part of Southern California Equine Emergency Evacuation, a 13,000 memberstrong community of horse lovers who have space to shelter the animals or trailers to pick them up in, and who’ll come to rescue when disaster strikes a community. On Thursday night, she evacuated four horses, starting in the city of Agoura Hills and then moving west into the rugged equestrian community of Hidden Valley in the Santa Monica Mountains. Those four pickups alone took all night. “I would have done more, but the cell phones went down,” she said. “That really was a big problem.” Fortunately, there were a number of folks out helping evacuate animals, including trained 56

volunteers like Phoenix and professionals with Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control and Ventura County Animal Services. Along with horse owners who were able to evacuate their animals themselves, rescuers were soon flooding into designated animal shelters like Pierce College in the west San Fernando Valley. The college campus, which includes a 225-acre farm, has for years served as a shelter during the fires that so frequently plague the region, and its staff was ready. “We have horse stables, corrals, people who understand equestrians, vets we can bring in,” Pierce College public information officer Doreen Clay told Earther. “There’s a lot of equestrian activities out on this west side of town.” When Phoenix dropped off her first rescue horse at Pierce College on Thursday night, the shelter was nearing capacity. Soon it was overflowing with more than 250 rescue animals, Clay told Earther. In the days since the fire flared up many folks have taken their animals home, but as of yesterday morning, there were still 153 horses and 20 mini horses, along with donkeys, goats, sheep, chickens, and tortoises. The nearby Hansen Dam Equestrian Center, also a designated shelter, was similarly slammed. Northwest of the fires near

Oxnard, the Ventura County Fairgrounds and the Humane Society of Ventura County started picking up some of the overflow. Greg Cooper, Director of Community Outreach at the Humane Society, said that his private non-profit jumped to 24/7 emergency services “within an hour of the first fire,” with equestrian teams heading out to rescue horses, donkeys, cows, and other livestock in the Malibu area. That included pulling animals from Zuma Beach, which became a temporary refuge for horses, llamas, and a now internet-famous pair of alpacas. Cooper told Earther that the Thomas Fire, which tore through Ventura County last year and became the largest fire in California’s history until the Mendocino Complex unseated it this summer, provided practice for the rescue teams. “The Thomas fire taught us a lot of things,” Cooper said. “We thought we were prepared for intake. We have spent the entire year getting our property more organized” and increasing capacity. “As the influx came in [this time around] it was much easier to do intake.” Cooper said the Humane Society would continue sheltering animals and providing 24/7 care “as long as it takes.” Randy Freeman, marketing manager at Ventura County Animal Services,

DECEMBER 2018

echoed that sentiment regarding the temporary shelter at the county fairgrounds, which was sheltering 180 horses, ponies, and other large animals as of Tuesday night. The animals may need help a while longer. As of Tuesday, the Woolsey Fire had torched nearly 100,000 acres, destroyed an estimated 435 structures and claimed two lives, according to Cal Fire. Full containment is expected by November 18, but even as thousands of people start to return home, recovery will be a long, painful

process for many residents and their animal companions. At least one ranch—White Cloud Ranch in Malibu—burned to the ground, although, thankfully, all 48 horses and ponies were evacuated. The bright spot amidst all the horror is how the community came together to help one another, and nowhere is that more evident than in the mass mobilization to rescue creatures that cannot rescue themselves. “It will be everybody’s turn sooner or later.” “I have to tell you, the community has been amazing,” Clay said, recalling how volunteers with the animal welfare organization Operation Blankets of Love showed up with supplies and stayed on campus for three days to help the small animals. In addition to the local vet the school partners with, a volunteer vet showed up out of nowhere to lend a hand, too. Phoenix said that as designated shelters became full Thursday night, private barns across a wide area started making themselves available. “People were driving these animals 70, 80 miles away from the fire,” she said. She also made her home available for people and animals—the calculus was simple. “It will be everybody’s turn sooner or later,” Phoenix said.

US FOREST SERVICE CHALLENGED ON DECISION TO SELL WILD HORSES FOR POSSIBLE HUMAN CONSUMPTION California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, in a letter to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue and Chief of the U.S. Forest Service Vicki Christiansen, today urged the Secretary and the Chief to reverse their decision allowing the U.S. Forest Service (Forest Service) to offer California’s wild horses for sale without

60

restriction. California law prohibits the possession or sale of horses with the intent of using them for human consumption. Additionally, federal law prohibits the Department of the Interior, which manages most of the country’s wild horses, from selling horses to be used in commercial products. The Forest Service has traditionally followed the practice of

the Department of the Interior and has historically respected California’s law. However, the Forest Service is now changing its policy, stating that some of the horses under its management may be put up for unconditional sale after 90 days.

DECEMBER 2018

“To slaughter for commercial consumption mustangs that have roamed California for over a century is not only atrocious, but unlawful,” said Attorney General Xavier Becerra. “These majestic animals captivate the imagination and symbolize the rugged independence of the American West. We urge the federal government to treat the Modoc National Forest and its wildlife with the respect that it is due by protecting these beautiful wild horses from the commercial slaughterhouse.” In California, wild horses roam public lands throughout the state, including the Devil’s Garden Plateau Wild Horse Territory, an area of more than 250,000 acres in Modoc National Forest. Occasional roundups of wild horses are a typical part of wildlife and land management. The Forest Service initiated the current wild horse roundup in October to reduce the horse populations in Modoc National Forest. In the roundup, the U.S. Forest Service will gather 1,000 protected wild horses. Attorney General Becerra cautions in the letter that selling the horses to a buyer planning to use the animals for human consumption is a felony under California law with a potential penalty of up to three years in prison. Under management by the Forest Service, the auction of protected horses will be offered in two phases: in the first phase of sales, the Forest Service will prioritize the adoption of wild horses by members of the public who are able to care for them, and will impose conditions to require buyers follow California law. However, after January 10, 2019, the Forest Service will offer the remaining horses for sale unconditionally, including without the conditions imposed by California law. In the letter, the Attorney General warns Secretary Perdue that by reversing the Department’s policy and allowing sales without restrictions, the Forest Service and buyers risk violating California law.

FEI Terminates

On November 19, the American Quarter Horse Association was notified that the Federation Equestre Internationale terminated its Cooperation Agreement with AQHA and NRHA due to breach of agreement terms regarding age divisions, reciprocity and steward/drug regulations. As discussed below, AQHA does not feel it has breached the terms of the agreement and welcomes continued dialog with FEI. To begin, reining became an FEI discipline in 2000 and was first recognized as a sport in 1949 by AQHA. AQHA is proud of the reining industry and the growth of this US-based sport worldwide. The American Quarter Horse is the ideal horse for reining, and breeders have taken pride year after year in the genetic base of the horses that are bred for and excel in reining.

Pursuant to the Cooperation Agreement, all events specifically organized for horses 7 years of age and older are to be held under the jurisdiction of FEI. AQHA does not offer a class that is specifically organized for horses 7 years of age and older. At AQHA events, American Quarter Horses in the open division compete in junior reining (ages 5 and under) or in senior reining (ages 6 and older). With respect to the welfare requirements addressed by the Cooperation Agreement, AQHA’s regulations and practices, in particular those associated with stewards and drug testing, are consistent with and meet such requirements. Simply put, our top priority as an association of horsemen is the health and welfare of our sport and of this great animal. The Association has taken and will continue to take the appropriate measures to ensure the safety and welfare of the horses competing at

AQHA-approved events. AQHA actively implements measures to protect American Quarter Horses competing in reining and all disciplines. AQHA began drug testing in 1973, establishing itself as a leader in welfare among equine breed associations. The drug-testing program is designed to ensure that horses competing in AQHAsanctioned competition are doing so in a manner that will promote the safety and well-being of all horses competing and ensure the enforcement of fair and equitable rules and procedures. In each instance that FEI has notified AQHA of a penalty imposed by FEI as a result of a drug violation, AQHA has afforded reciprocity. In addition, the AQHA stewards program plays an important role in advocating for the horse and helping to safeguard fair competition. Stewards help to ensure that legal tack and humane practices are used and appropriate conduct is displayed at AQHA shows and events. AQHA stewards are trained and tested to protect these athletes and, most importantly, to protect the breed, advance animal welfare and ensure the integrity of the competition, including reining. Again, AQHA disagrees with the allegation that AQHA has breached its agreement with FEI and welcomes continued dialog with FEI. As always, AQHA’s commitment to the sport of reining and to upholding the well-being of the American Quarter Horse in competition remains a top priority.

HORSE ESCAPES FLAMES, Saved from pool in California

People from California are still evacuating and recovering from the deadly wildfires and there was concern about the animals left behind. When Jeff Hill of Paradise, California returned to his evacuated neighborhood during the camp fire, he found a horse in a backyard swimming pool. He said in a Facebook post the horse was tangled in the pool cover after escaping the flames. That pool cover prevented her from drowning. Hill says he scrambled to unhook the cover and guided the horse up the shallow end steps. Resources eventually came to escort the horse from the fire zone..

By Christine DeLong Wheeler The world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales will no longer train in New Hampshire and move to Central Missouri, according to AnheuserBusch. The training facility at the Merrimack brewery in New Hampshire is relocating to Warm Springs Ranch, Anheuser-Busch's state-of-the-art breeding facility located near Boonville, Missouri. A spokesperson said that moving the training center and staff will allow training to begin sooner. "As our Clydesdales are born at Warm Springs Ranch, our specialized training team will now be closer to the young Clydesdales and be able to begin training programs earlier, for the benefit of the Clydesdales. This move will also bring new and exciting experiences to our 50,000+ tour guest/visitors at Warm Springs

Ranch," said Anheuser-Busch Corporate Communications Director Samantha Roth. The east coast hitch will remain in Merrimack, so the public will still get to see the horses, but there will be parts of the year when the hitch and the Clydesdales will be touring in other parts of the country. When the horses are on the road, the public will still be able to visit the Merrimack plant to learn all about the horses and have their picture taken with the wagon. Anheuser-Busch officials said the move will not impact any part of the brewery's operations.

Champions Emerge at 2018 US Dressage Finals Every year the nation’s top dressage horse-and-rider combinations gather at the Kentucky Horse Park for the United States Dressage Federation’s (USDF) US Dressage Finals presented by Adequan®. Held November 8-11, the 2018 competition hosted more than 380 entries representing a record breaking 42 different states.

Vying for national titles, competitors riding horses of a variety of breeds competed in Training Level through Grand Prix in both Open and Adult Amateur divisions. Highlights of the competition included champions Alice Tarjan (Oldwick, N.J.) and Candescent, her eight-year-old Hanoverian mare. The pair cruised to a unanimous win under all three judges with 69.069 percent in the Intermediate II Adult Amateur division, the first of 30 championship titles to be awarded over the four days of competition. Tarjan was pleased with how her young mount was unfazed by the atmosphere of the Alltech Arena. “It's getting better and better and you can really ride her in the ring, which makes it fun. She fought for me today, and it's been such good experience for her to do this,” said Tarjan. She and Candescent went on to win the Grand Prix Adult Amateur Championship the next day. Read more about Tarjan’s journey to the 2018 US Dressage Finals presented by Adequan here. Fan favorite Adiah HP, Sherry Koella’s 11-year-old Friesian mare, and James Koford (West Salem, N.C.) returned to the Finals this year, claiming the national title in the Grand Prix Open Championship with 69.130 percent. Watch their winning ride. “I am so pumped! She's getting so mature – now she goes in the ring and gets excited, but I can channel that energy,” said Koford after the win. “I saw her in a clinic four years ago and thought she was the most fun horse I'd ever seen, and I had to sit on her. Now she's gone on to do everything I've asked and more.” Koford and Adiah HP also went on to win the Grand Prix Open Freestyle championship. Read about more memorable moments from Friday’s competition here. With six arenas of top dressage competition and championship festivities lasting well into the night, the Kentucky Horse Park was the place to be on Saturday as 12 new champions were crowned, including First Level Open Champions Michael Bragdell (Colora, Md.) and SenSation HW, Carol McPhee’s five-year-old Westphalian gelding. A member of the US Equestrian Dressage Development Program, Bragdell won the division on a score of 75.049 percent. “He is special, for sure,” said Bragdell. “He's so talented, but it's more than that – it's his great work ethic, which is so important.” Read more about Bragdell and Saturday’s many other champions here. On the last day of competition, dressage newcomer Tricia Earley (Aledo, Texas) and her 12-year-old Oldenburg gelding San Angelo rode to the top of the Third Level Adult Amateur Freestyle Championship, performing like seasoned veterans as the only combination to break 70 percent for the unanimous win under all three judges with 71.856 percent. “Last year I'd never even heard of the US Dressage Finals, so this is all very new. I only started riding as an adult – I always wanted to as a child but never could,” said Earley. “As for my horse, we've only been together for a year. I found him in Sweden when I went with a friend who was horse shopping for herself – I wasn't even looking! But he had such a kind eye, and I thought at the time, ‘That's the horse I would love to have one day.' Later I did end up needing a horse and he was still available, so I bought him without ever having ridden him – there was just something about his eyes. A year later, here we are.” The United States Dressage Federation is a recognized affiliate of US Equestrian. U.S. National Championship Horse Show Draws 1800 Horses

Nearly 1,800 Arabian and Half-Arabian horses and 7,200 exhibitors, owners, trainers, and support staff from 44 states and six countries made Tulsa Expo Square in Tulsa, Okla., their home for two weeks during the annual Arabian Horse Association’s (AHA) Arabian and Half-Arabian U.S. National Championship Horse Show.

Credited by the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce with bringing $104 million in economic impact to the city of Tulsa, second only to the Tulsa State Fair, AHA’s premier championship crowned nearly 200 hundred National and Reserve National Champions across a number of diverse disciplines, from hunter and Western pleasure, to trail and reining, to breeding in-hand and driving classes. This event truly showcased the diversity and athleticism of the Arabian and Half-Arabian breeds. Over $1 million in prize money was awarded across these disciplines through AHA’s Arabian Breeders Sweepstakes and Halter and Performance Futurity/Maturity programs, along with the Arabian English Performance Association (AEPA), Arabian Western Pleasure Association (AWPA), and the new Arabian Hunter Pleasure Association (AHPA) prize money classes. These programs were created with breeding incentives in mind. Breeders and owners alike can win prize money through competition for eligible horses, by nominating to these individual programs. . New in 2018, the AHA’s Market Development and Promotion (MDP) Committee sponsored a Tulsa Children’s Coat Drive. This event was headlined by the appearance of the National Football League’s (NFL) Denver Broncos® mascot Thunder, a purebred Arabian gelding owned by Sharon Magness Blake, and his rider Ann Judge. Thunder and Ann not only supported the coat drive but conducted daily meet and greets with exhibitors and horse 74

Adding to the excitement of this premier event, the philanthropic sister organization to AHA, The Arabian Horsemen’s Distress Fund (AHDF), a 501(c)(3) that

provides financial support for AHA members who experience catastrophic, unexpected crisis, held several special events to not only support the Arabian horse community, but also the local Tulsa community. Over the years, AHDF has disbursed hundreds of thousands of dollars to horsemen

and women in need in the Arabian horse community. U.S. Nationals generally serves as one of their largest fundraisers of the year. “The Arabian Horsemen’s Distress Fund has raised over $1 million over the last 10 years that the fundraising efforts have been taking place at U.S. Nationals in Tulsa," said Mary Trowbridge, founder of the AHDF. "This is a monumental achievement that helps those in need, that the distress fund was designed to assist." For the second time, AHDF’s Chips for Charity event served as the primary fundraiser, taking place Wednesday, October, 24. Several large sponsors stepped up to support the event, including AHA. Monies raised support AHDF and their mission, among other related charities. Sponsored signature drink bars representing key stallions in the industry, craps and poker tables, a DJ, and more made the evening a fun break from the seriousness of competition.

On top of all the fun and competition excitement, the 48th Annual AHA National Youth Judging Contest took place in conjunction with U.S. Nationals, as it does each year. This prestigious contest, known for the $10,000 in scholarship money awarded to contestants, allows youth judging individuals and teams the opportunity to evaluate nationalcaliber halter and performance Arabian and Half-Arabian horses. Contestants are challenged to learn basic horse judging principles and develop their decision-making, public speaking, and reasoning skills. The contest is composed of two parts: placings through classes the contestants judge and oral reasons. The 2018 contest had 107 contestants, comprising 26 teams. The high-point individual winner was Erin Garlock from Colorado State University. With this win, she received the opportunity to judge the Half-Arabian/AngloArabian English Pleasure Junior Horse Championship in center ring with the national-caliber judges and a new saddle. Be sure to follow AHA on Facebook (@ ArabianHorseAssociation), Twitter (@AHAArabian), Instagram (@ arabianhorseassoc), and Snapchat.

Since 2007, the Mustang Heritage Foundation (MHF) has placed more than 11,200 wild horses and burros into private care, and has now received recognition by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The recognition took place during a wild horse and burro event Nov. 2-3 at Meadowood Recreation Area in Lorton, Virginia. “The Mustang Heritage Foundation’s commitment and

Mustang Heritage Foundation Receives Recognition from BLM

contribution is a testament to the positive impact a committed, successful partner can provide the program,” said BLM Deputy Director Brian Steed. “We’re grateful for all the group’s help and support in finding good homes for the animals.” Since 2001, the MHF’s mission has been to create and promote programs and activities that elevate the image, trainability and placement of wild

horses and burros, while educating the public about the program. “The Board of Trustees, myself and the staff of the Mustang Heritage Foundation are honored to receive this recognition from the Bureau of Land Management,” said Kali Sublett, Executive Director of the Mustang Heritage Foundation. “Over the past 12 years we have worked together tirelessly to ensure the success of

the partnership and the programs it represents. All of which would not be possible without the hard work, passion and dedication of the trainers who work with us every day. We hope 2019 is bigger and better than ever and look forward to working with anyone who wants to help us make that happen!” One of the programs created and managed by the MHF is the Trainer Incentive Program (TIP) which was created to bridge the gap between potential adopters and American mustangs housed at BLM off-range corrals. The horse trainers in this program gentle and train wild mustangs and burros to make them more suitable for adoption or purchase. TIP trainers located all across the United States pick up animals from the BLM Wild Horse & Burro program and are paid a fee once the animals are adopted. For more information about the TIP program and how you can become a trainer of adopter visit https:// mustangheritagefoundation.org/tip/. The MHF also offers different competitive events such as the Extreme Mustang Makeover and Mustang Magic. Trainers in these competitions have approximately 100 days to work with a wild mustang before they arrive to compete for cash and prizes. During the event, the trainers showcase the beauty, versatility and trainability of the American mustangs. Over 4,000 mustangs have been adopted through the Extreme Mustang Makeover events since 2007. To learn more about the various events and to apply to compete, visit https:// mustangheritagefoundation.org. The Veterans and Mustangs program is a life changing experience for both Veterans and their wild horses. Military veterans choose a BLM mustang, untouched by humans, and transform the horse in approximately six weeks into a gentled, adoptable equine companion. During the 6-week session, the veteran will experience the transformation from “wild to mild” by working directly with their chosen wild mustang, in addition to learning marketable equine vocational skills and general equine knowledge. At the end of the session, the previously wild horses that participate in the program are available for adoption by the veteran participant or placed into private care. This program is completely reliant on donations. To learn more about Veterans and Mustangs visit https:// mustangheritagefoundation.org/

PACHECO CROWNED

2018 PBR WORLD CHAMPION

By: Kacie Albert

Battling through torn ligaments in his left knee sustained last weekend, just days prior to the 25th PBR: Unleash The Beast World Finals, Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil) went 2-for-5 inside T-Mobile Arena to hold off a surging pair of second-year riders and be crowned the 2018 PBR (Professional Bull Riders) World Champion.

82

“It wasn’t easy this year,” Pacheco said. “I got that injury (last weekend) and worked hard this past week, and it’s paid off. “After every round, my knee hurt more and more. I tried to empty my mind and forget everything. I thank God for this win and this big dream come true.” Pacheco’s hard-earned title is three years in the making after he finished No. 2 in the world in 2015 and 2016, and No. 5 last season. The 24-year-old began the 2018 edition of the most prestigious event in bull riding in possession of the No. 1 ranking in the world for six months. Pacheco surged to the top spot in the rankings after earning his historic third consecutive event victory at Last Cowboy Standing, the third PBR Major of the season, prior to the annual summer break. Pacheco emerged in the second half of the elite tour stronger than ever, winning three additional events, to conclude the regular-season with a leaguebest five victories. During the 2018 season, Pacheco also won three 15/15 Bucking Battles. Just days prior to the World Finals, Pacheco sustained high-grade partial tears to both the MCL and PCL in his left knee while attempting Fly Over (Cantankerous Bucking Bulls/F-F Rodeo) in Round 2 of the Velocity Tour Finals. Pacheco was advised to stay off the injured knee for 12 weeks, but there was a million dollars and a gold buckle on the line. Four days later at the World Finals, riding his Round 1 and Round 2 draws, Rugby (LeFlore Bucking Bulls) for 87.25 points and Smooth Wreck (Owens/ Wyatt/Smith) for 88.75 points, respectively, Pacheco held off a surging Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil) and Cody Teel (Kountze, Texas), who concluded the year ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in the world. After leading Leme by 1,262.5 prior to Championship Sunday, he ended the year 422.5 points in front of his countryman. In the league’s 25-year history, Pacheco is the 18th rider – and sixth Brazilian – to claim the PBR World Champion gold buckle. His title is the tenth time a rider from that country has won what’s been called the most difficult individual championship in professional sports. Pacheco earns the PBR’s $1 million World Champion bonus and finished 2018 with earnings of $1,535,094.62 and 5,444.16 world points. After last bucking in July, SweetPro’s Bruiser (D&H Cattle Co./Buck Cattle Co.) returned with a vengeance in Las Vegas, recording a 44.75-point bull score in Round 2, and 45.75-point bull score in the championship round, to propel him to his third consecutive PBR YETI World Champion Bull title. continued on page 84 DECEMBER 2018

PBR BULLS He is now just the second bovine athlete in league history to accomplish the feat, joining Little Yellow Jacket (Joe Berger/Tom Teague/Bernie Taupin) who won the honor from 2002-2004. D&H Cattle Company earned $100,000 courtesy of Bruiser’s world title. Bruiser was dominant in the first half of the season, earning six YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event honors, including in Glendale for his league-leading 47.5-point bull score earned after bucking off Ryan Dirteater (Hulbert, Oklahoma) in 6.67 seconds during the 15/15 Bucking Battle. Wowing the crowds throughout the five days of action in Sin City, Marco Eguchi (Poá, Brazil) concluded his sixth trip to the season-culminating event 5-for-6 to win the 2018 World Finals event title. He earned $372,000 and 2,050 world points. After beginning the event ranked No.20 in the world, the 29-year-old surged to No. 5 in the world compliments of a victory backed by consecutive wins in Round 2 and Round 3. Of those round victories, Eguchi’s electric 94-point trip in the second round aboard Spotted Demon (Julio Moreno/Dallas Schott) earned the Lane Frost/ Brent Thurman Award as the highmarked ride of the event. He is now the 21st different rider to win the event title. Hocus Pocus (Barthold/Kuhn/ Almand/D&H Cattle Co.) and Legit (Leffew Bucking Bulls/ Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Julie Rosen) tied for YETI Bull of the Finals with a combined two-score average of 46.25 points.

Taxation of Horse-Related Business Activities Under The New Tax Law The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA) has had an impact on nearly every U.S. person and industry, and the equine industry is no exception. Despite its overall shortcomings, the new law contains a number of provisions that can be utilized to your benefit and we have been working with numerous equine businesses to take the best advantage of them. In this post, we introduce some provisions of the new tax law that have a direct impact on horse-related businesses. Reduced corporate income tax rate Horse-related businesses operating as “C” corporations now benefit from a reduced corporate income tax rate of 21%. LCCs that elected to be taxed as corporations also receive this rate. The TCJA has eliminated the corporate Alternative Minimum Tax. 20% deduction for pass-through entities Pass-through entities, including sole proprietorships, partnerships, “S” corporations, and LCCs are now entitled to a 20% deduction on qualified business income, subject to phaseouts for taxpayers in “specified service trades or businesses” who earn over $157,500 (single) or $315,000 (married filing jointly). This includes members of any profession where the principal asset of their trade or business is their reputation or skill (except engineers and architects). The new deduction is likely to encourage many people who work in the horse industry (including but not limited to veterinarians, trainers, laborers and farriers) to begin working independently if they are not doing so already. Note that the new tax law also reduces the top income tax rate on owners of pass-through businesses from 39.6% to 37%. Immediate Expensing Under 26 U.S. Code § 179, businesses may deduct the full purchase price of “qualifying business equipment” (equipment used in the active conduct of trade or business) that was purchased or leased during the previous tax year. This is usually preferable to capitalizing and depreciating it. This code section was enacted to provide an incentive for businesses to grow and expand. There are three limitations to the § 179 elections: 1. For property placed in service as of January 1, 2018, the maximum deduction that you may elect to take in any single tax year is $1,000,000. 26 U.S. Code § 179(b)(1) 2. The deduction is limited to $2.5 million per year, at which point it phases out. 3. Your Section 179 deduction may not exceed your aggregate income from the active conduct of your trade or business for that year – any excess may be carried over. 26 U.S. Code § 179(b)(3) 86

Section 179 property now also includes to “qualified improvement property” placed in service – this includes building improvements, including roofs, HVAC, alarm systems, security systems, and fire protection systems, and excludes building enlargements, elevators, escalators, and improvements to a building’s internal structural framework. Section 179 also allows a deduction of up to $25,000 of the cost of heavy-duty motor vehicles. Bonus depreciation Revised 26 U.S. Code § 168(k) increases the bonus depreciation percentage from 50% to 100%. This means that horse-related businesses now get the first year, full expensing on their equipment, farm machinery, racehorses, yearlings, and breeding stock placed in service after September 27, 2017. Both new and used equipment (and horses) not yet placed in service now qualify under the new tax law. Note that you must take the Section 179 deduction first, and may only apply the bonus depreciation allowance to any remaining basis amount. The 100% bonus depreciation rate applies through December 31, 2022, after which it will decrease by 20% per year until it phases out to 0% by 2027. Accelerated depreciation of the remaining balance After full expensing under Section 179 and then 168(k), you are then permitted to depreciate the remaining balance of your business purchases under the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS). Your tangible property will be recovered over its specified “useful” life through annual deductions, using the double declining balance method – now 200% of the straight line depreciation rate (up from 150% before the new tax law was enacted). The useful life of farm machinery and equipment is now five years (it previously was seven years). Individual tax provisions that may benefit you On a personal level, you may also benefit from the following tax law changes: Increase in the standard deduction. If your work with horses is best classified as a hobby, the increase in the standard deduction to $12,000 for individuals filers and $24,000 for joint filers may make up – at least in small part – for the loss of your itemized deductions. Increase in the estate tax exemption. The TCJA doubles the estate tax exemption to $11 million through December 31, 2025, at which time it will revert to last years’ $5.5 million. This should provide tremendous relief for many owners of family businesses and farms.

American Farmland Trust Partners with Smithfield Brand, Farmland to Save the Land

Today, American Farmland Trust, the organization behind the national movement No Farms No Food®, announces its partnership with Farmland, maker of high-quality, popular consumer goods such as bacon and sausage, to save farmland and ranchland. Now through Dec. 31, 2019, Farmland has pledged to protect one square foot of American farmland for every Pure Farmland item purchased, by donating funds from these products to AFT to further its mission. The loss of America’s farmland is an urgent issue. AFT’s “Farms Under Threat” report-- the most comprehensive report ever released on the loss of farmland and ranchland in the U.S -- revealed we are losing farmland at an alarming rate: 31 million acres lost between 1992 and 2012, 175 acres per hour, 3 acres per minute, lost forever. Land no longer available to produce the food, fuel and fiber that sustains our society. “Our future depends on having enough farmland to both feed us and restore our planet. And this requires a holistic vision of the future: one that acknowledges farmland as irreplaceable infrastructure we cannot afford to lose; that sees farming practices that improve soil health as necessary for that land to serve us in perpetuity; and that views farmers as the stewards of that land, worthy of our fervent support –because at heart, what these farmers do is for all of us,” says John Piotti, president and CEO, AFT. He continues, “This partnership will help consumers understand the threats to American farmland and further AFT’s mission of protecting the nation’s farmland and ranchland, promoting sound farming practices and keeping farmers on the land. We are grateful for Farmland’s support.” Farmland has a long-standing dedication to working farmers and offers products that people can feel good about serving to their family. For every package sold in its new product line, Pure Farmland, Farmland will donate the cost of protecting one square foot of farmland, up to $140,000. These donations will help AFT continue to further its mission of not only protecting the nation’s farmland and ranchland, but also promoting sound farming practices and supporting farmers. “For nearly 60 years, Farmland has relied on the tireless work of farmers to offer our loyal consumers products that they can trust,” said Megan Thomas, senior brand manager for Smithfield Foods. “As we enter this next chapter for our brand, we’re honored to partner with American Farmland Trust to further showcase the fundamental role our nation’s rich farmland plays in offering our consumers a wholesome protein option for every meal.” For more information on Farmland and how to give back to American Farmland Trust, visit FarmlandFoods.com, Facebook.com/ FarmlandFoods, or @FarmlandFoods. Kassandra Sapia and Walt van Esfane Thunder to Triple Crown Nutrition® Excellence Award

Kassandra Sapia, of Friesian Thunder in Murietta, Calif., has been embodying excellence in horsemanship since 2008, when the talented daughter of Robin and Steve Young first rode to a National Champion Friesian English Pleasure Saddle Seat Amateur title. Ten years later, she’s still bringing horses to winning form with more

world titles and the Triple Crown Nutrition Excellence Award following a record-breaking 14th annual International Friesian Show Horse Association World & Grand National Championship Horse Show, October 2-7 in Springfield, Ohio. The Triple Crown Nutrition Excellence Award winner cruised to a World Championship title in Friesian

Dressage Hack and top four finish in Friesian English Pleasure Saddle Seat Amateur on the 11-year-old stallion, Walt van Esfane (lovingly nicknamed Bugatti), as well as the World title in Friesian Liberty Geldings on Sieger fan Ferwalde. “We’re really looking forward to trying out Triple Crown’s premium horse feed and learning more about

how its fixed formulas and quality ingredients promote a healthy digestive tract and, most importantly, a happy horse and athlete,” Sapia said. “Our stallion has been attracting a lot of interest from mare owners, although we’re concentrating on his show career first. He’s got a good head on his shoulders and we’d like him to step up further in the dressage world before we consider standing him.” When Friesian Thunder is ready to take their stallion from the show ring to the breeding barn, Triple Crown will be ready to make the nutritional transition a smooth one with choices like Triple Crown Growth, a moderate soluble carbohydrate, high fat, high fiber, beet pulp-based feed that is ideal for breeding stallions, as well as broodmares, weanlings and yearlings. For show horses, like Bugatti, who are still working on a competitive schedule, there’s Triple Crown Training, an oat-based, corn-free, high fat feed fortified with fish oil that’s ideal for performance horses requiring a higher caloric intake, or Total Lifetime Care®, a pelleted high fat feed ideal for horses of any age. Based in Wayzata, Minn., Triple Crown Nutrition is the official feed sponsor of the US Dressage, Eventing and Show Jumping teams.. 96

Cowgirl Up! Coming to Wickenburg

The Desert Caballeros Western Museum is proud to present the 14th annual Cowgirl Up! Art from the Other Half of the West Invitational Exhibition and Sale from March 29 - May 12, 2019. In 2006, the Desert Caballeros Western Museum embraced a

DECEMBER 2018

revolutionary idea: an annual exhibition and sale, showcasing the

brightest contemporary female artists depicting the Western lifestyle. In the male-dominated world of Western art, Cowgirl Up! turned the spotlight squarely on women's voices and perspectives, serving up a new, deeper understanding of the American West. Fourteen years later, CU! remains one of the major national events for Western women and artists. Cowgirl Up! is a crossroads where artists, collectors and art enthusiasts come together to explore what it means to be a Western artist. CU! artists ride the range of techniques, styles, and mediums, altogether contributing more than 200 paintings, drawings, and sculptural works each year. More than 50 of the 56 featured artists are in attendance for opening weekend. After opening weekend, art is available for purchase at the Museum and online at westernmuseum.org. Proceeds benefit the creative endeavors of the Cowgirl Up! artists and of the Desert Caballeros Western Museum. The 2019 Cowgirl Up! presents 56 talented artists from as close as Prescott and Phoenix and as far as Washington, Wyoming, and Tennessee. Eight of the artists are new to the show. During three days of opening festivities, Frontier Street in front of the Museum transforms into a tented venue for catered dinners, dancing, live auctions, and an artists' quick draw. The weekend kicks off on Friday, March 29 with an opening gala reception, miniatures sale, and dancing under the tent. Saturday, March 30 includes a session with a keynote speaker and a bid and bash sale with bidding on main gallery pieces, a sit-down dinner, and an artists' awards ceremony. Sunday, March 31 begins at 9 a.m. with a chuckwagon breakfast and a 90-minute quick draw with the artists. A spirited live auction of the quick draw pieces closes out the weekend. Tickets for opening weekend are now available online at westernmuseum.org or by phone at 928-684-2272. Visit westernmuseum. org for a full description of the weekend's events, including times and prices.

Truck Talk with Nate Brekken

Keep an eye on the weather.

It’s that time of year. Cooler temperatures abound across the state and country. Although in Phoenix we do not usually worry about it, winter temperatures are on their way. Depending on where you live, diesel fuel may be changing to number 1 instead of the normal number 2. Number 1 diesel flows easier in the cold. This fuel Nate Brekken is less likely to jell when temperatures fall below 30 degrees. There are plenty of additives on the market these days to help with the fuel jelling. With these additives in your tank, on a fill up a number 2 diesel fuel will work in cold weather. Fuel economy, power and how your truck drives, may change if you are running number 1 diesel. Make sure your fuel filter (s) are changed and ready for the winter season, even if you are almost due on mileage, it may be a good time to swap them out. Strictly Diesel recommends every 15000 miles for your fuel filters to get serviced. If you do go up north or to cold country in general, and think you may have an issue, here are a few things to look for: · Your truck does not start · running rough · water in fuel light · lack of power · stalling Strictly Diesel has a wide variety of great fuel additives in stock. We can get you set up for your cold country needs. Let Strictly Diesel look over your truck with our free multipoint inspection. We will make sure your truck is set for the cold weather and your trip. Give Strictly Diesel a call today, or just stop by. Strictlydiesel.com 623-582-4404

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, DVM and U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D. today announced a joint public meeting to be held on Oct. 23-24, 2018 to discuss the use of cell culture technology to develop products derived from livestock and poultry. The joint public meeting, hosted by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service and the FDA, will focus on the potential hazards, oversight considerations, and labeling of cell cultured food products derived from livestock and poultry. “This is an important opportunity to hear from the agricultural industry and consumers as we consider the regulatory framework for these new products,” said Secretary Perdue. “American farmers and ranchers feed the world, but as technology advances, we must consider how to inspect and regulate to ensure food safety, regardless of the production method.” “The FDA knows just how vital it is to ensure the safety of our nation’s food supply and the critical role science-based, modern regulatory frameworks are to fostering innovation. Recent advances in animal cell cultured food products present many important and timely technical and regulatory considerations for the FDA and our partners at USDA,” said Commissioner Gottlieb. “We look forward to the opportunity to hold a meeting with our USDA colleagues as part of an open public dialogue regarding these

products.” The first day of the meeting will focus primarily on the potential hazards that need to be controlled for the safe production of animal cell cultured food products and oversight considerations by regulatory agencies. The second day of the meeting will focus on labeling considerations. Representatives of industry, consumer groups and other stakeholders are invited to participate in the meeting. Attendees are encouraged to pre-register to attend the meeting. Pre-registration is available at the Meetings and Events page on the FSIS website. The meeting will be held on Oct. 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Oct. 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Jefferson Auditorium in the U.S. Department of Agriculture South Building, 1400 Independence Ave. SW, Washington, DC, 20250. Anyone who wishes to submit written comments prior to the public meeting or after the meeting may do so by submitting comments on regulations.gov by Nov. 26, 2018. Comments previously submitted to FDA in regard to the July 12, 2018 public meeting will also be considered. For further information on the joint public meeting and to register to attend the meeting, please visit the Meetings and Events page on the FSIS website. Attendance is free.

AQHA World Championship Show Wrap-Up Nearly 4,500 entries converged at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City to vie for the AQHA’s coveted golden globes and more than $2.3 million in purse and prizes.

The Lucas Oil World brings together exhibitors, owners, breeders and fans of the American Quarter Horse from around the world for two weeks of exciting competition, educational opportunities and a bountiful trade show.

That’s a wrap on the 2018 Lucas Oil AQHA World Championship Show! Amateur and open exhibitors from the United States, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom competed for 99 world championships and 90 Adequan® (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan)Level 2 Championships champion titles. More than 1,900 horses and 1,400 exhibitors competed in western, English and halter events, with nearly 4,500 entries in these events. View the official results and score sheets at www.aqha.com/worldshow. In addition to Level 3 and Adequan® Level 2 classes, the Lucas Oil AQHA Superhorse, AQHA All-Around Amateur, OKC Leading Owner, The American Quarter Horse Journal Reserve Leading Owner and the top Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage-bred horses in both the amateur and open divisions were awarded at the show. The show also featured the inaugural Pleasure Versatility Challenge, presented by Terry Bradshaw Quarter Horses. The show also offered five Level 1 (horse) stakes classes with added money; three of the Level 1 (horse) stakes classes were new to this year’s show. Exhibitors in the Level 1 stakes classes competed for $1,000 in added money in each class, plus 75 percent of the entry fees. Again this year, more than $150,000 was added to the halter prize money thanks to the generosity of 10-year cumulative breeders Steve and Kathy Headley of Bloomington, Indiana; 30-year cumulative breeders Gary and Linda Gordon of Fossil Gate Farms, Roanoke, Texas; and 30year cumulative breeders Terry and Tammy Bradshaw of Thackerville, Oklahoma. The halter bonanza also recognized the top Adequan® Level 2 exhibitors in both the open and amateur divisions, splitting $10,000 between them. If you were unable to join us in Oklahoma City, or missed the free live webcast, brought to you by Nutrena, be sure to check out the results at www.aqha.com/worldshow. You can also watch The American Quarter Horse Journal’s “Journal Winning Run” interviews with each world champion, starring the best riders in the world. One of the highlights of the various special events at the Lucas Oil World was the Lucas Oil World Match Roping. Roping fans filled the stands for the star-studded event featuring Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association tie-down roping champions. First, young guns Cory Solomon and Timber Moore went head to head, with Timber taking home $10,000 in prize money. Then legends Blair Burk and Cody Ohl competed for $7,500, with Blair taking home the cash. Moore won the overall Young Gun vs. Legend showdown. Read more about the Lucas Oil World Match Roping. AQHA retained the services of speed-event ground expert John Laws to ensure the Association provided top ground conditions for the Lucas Oil World exhibitors and horses competing in speed events at the show. The speed events were also scheduled at the beginning of the show to ensure that the ground could be monitored without having to work the arena for different disciplines in between these classes. AQHA Professional Horsemen volunteered their time to give free Ride the Pattern clinics, presented by Nutrena. These clinics gave exhibitors and spectators the perfect opportunity to learn how AQHA Professional Horsemen would approach a specific 2018 Lucas Oil World class or

110

pattern. Thanks in part to Nutrena’s generosity to match the amount donated at the Ride the Pattern clinics, the Professional Horsemen Crisis Fund raised more than $4,000. The AQHA Professional Horsemen also hosted an online auction raising nearly $25,000 for the crisis fund. Nutrena also highlighted its Feed It Forward program at the Lucas Oil World. Feed It Forward is a giving program designed to help organizations that share the belief that the bond between animals and people change lives. Animals change lives. Find out how Nutrena is helping at www. FeedItForward.org.

Special Awards The Lucas Oil Superhorse title is awarded to the horse that earns the most points in three or more Level 3 events in three categories during the show. This year, 22 contenders competed to take home this prestigious award. Blue Kahlua, owned by Montlake Farms LLC of Seattle, was crowned the 2018 Lucas Oil Superhorse. The 2013 brown gelding by Chocolua and out of Exotic And Blue was bred by Alyse Roberts of Tuttle, Oklahoma. Blue Kahlua was shown by AQHA Professional Horsemen Chuck Briggs of Azle, Texas. The team earned 25.5 points by earning the reserve world championship title in junior pleasure driving, third in junior working hunter and in junior hunter hack and was a finalist in the performance halter geldings. Blue Kahlua’s connections received $25,000; an original Lisa Perry bronze; and a flower bouquet. Read more about the top five Lucas Oil Superhorse winners. The AQHA All-Around Amateur Award is presented to the exhibitor and horse team that earned the most points in three or more Level 3 amateur events in three categories during the show. This year, 19 contenders qualified to compete for the title. Angela Fox of Frisco, Texas, earned the title of 2018 AQHA All-Around Amateur. Fox showed her American Quarter Horse, HP The Rusty Fox. The 2015 sorrel gelding, who is by Mechanic and out of Sheza Pleasure by Nite Chip, was bred by Mariann Harrington and Joe Prause of Cabot, Arkansas. Fox and HP The Rusty Fox earned 38 points. They placed third in amateur hunter under saddle, third in amateur performance halter geldings, fifth in amateur showmanship and seventh in hunt seat equitation. Fox received $15,000, an original Lisa Perry bronze and flower bouquet. Read more about the top five AQHA All-Around Amateur exhibitors. The owner must have three horses entered at the show to be eligible. This year’s OKC Leading Owner was Amy Jo Erhardt of Oxford, Ohio. The American Quarter Horse Journal Reserve Leading Owner was awarded to Fred Wilcox of Louisa, Virginia. For the amateur and open divisions, the owners and breeders of the top placing Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage-bred horses each received $250. The owners also received a specially designed trophy. In the open division, Lincoln Figueiredo of Brazil, took home the win with the 2009 bay mare Weavers Playgem (Gems And Starlight-Budhas Playgun by Playgun), bred by Stan and Nancy Weaver of Big Sandy, Montana. There were 156 horses bred by Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders that competed in Level 3 and Adequan® Level 2 classes at this year’s Lucas Oil World.

Clea Cloutier Wins USEF Youth Sportsman’s Award

US Equestrian (USEF) is pleased to announce that Clea Cloutier is the recipient of the 2018 USEF Youth Sportsman’s Award. This award recognizes outstanding youth members for their achievements and identifies potential future leaders in the equine industry. The American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) nominated Cloutier, who is actively involved in the AMHA

Youth (AMHAY). Cloutier (Derry, N.H.) grew up with horses, attending her first horse show with her mother when she was just a few weeks old. She started riding a Morgan mare called Outrageous Fortune when she was two-years-old. At fouryears-old, Cloutier was allowed to compete in the youth contest. “Due to my early start, I received many pink, green, purple, and

brown ribbons,” said Cloutier, the youngest competitor in the competition for a number of years. “I learned sportsmanship from not winning. I learned patience and knew it would take me a while to compete with the older kids.” Today, Cloutier competes Morgan horses in an array of divisions, including saddle seat, hunter, Western, carriage pleasure driving, and dressage.

2018 USEF Youth Sportsman's Award recipient, Clea Cloutier

Popular, bipartisan trails bills needs support from public As Congress returns for a final “lame duck” session following the November 6 election, lawmakers have an opportunity to pass widely supported, bipartisan legislation that promotes access to public lands for equine enthusiasts. The horse industry seeks to push two major trails bills across the finish line:

Restore Our Parks and Public Lands Act (H.R. 6510/S. 3172) – The House Natural Resources Committee voted unanimously to pass H.R. 6510, the Restore Our Parks and Public Lands Act, underscoring the bi-partisan support behind the bill. The House bill currently has 209 cosponsors. On the other side of the Capitol, Sens. Rob Portman (R-OH) and Mark Warner (D-VA) have joined 33 senate colleagues to give momentum to the Restore Our Parks Act of 2018 (S. 3172). The Restore Our Parks Act (H.R. 6510/ S. 3172) will fund National Park Service trails maintenance projects by diverting energy development revenues to a new public lands restoration account Recreation Not Red Tape (RNR) Act – Since House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Rob Bishop (R-UT) introduced the RNR Act (H.R. 3400) in 2017, the chairman conducted a full committee hearing, resulting in passage of the legislation in April 2018. House leadership has the discretion to schedule a vote on H.R. 3400 before the end of the year. The legislation currently has 12 bipartisan co-sponsors. On the Senate side, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) introduced a companion bill, S. 1633, which has won bipartisan co-sponsorships from Sens. Donnelly (D-IN), Ernst (R-IA), Tester (D-MT) and King (I-ME). Although leadership has referred the bill to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, no hearings have been scheduled. While the Restore Our Parks legislation has quickly gained significant support from lawmakers, the RNR Act has not gained as much traction. To put more horsepower into the bill, urge your lawmakers to co-sponsor the RNR Act. Please contact your lawmakers today, and urge them to pass these important bills before the end of the year.

Western Milling to Pay $2.4 million to settle lawsuit for poisoning 49 horses in Clovis

By Pablo Lopez

USDF Announces Launch of Dressage TestPro App

Western Milling will pay $2.4 million to settle a Fresno Superior Court lawsuit for selling tainted feed that killed or severely injured 49 horse at a horse ranch in Clovis in September 2015.

Fresno attorney Warren Paboojian said Monday that Black Fence Farms in Clovis, as well as a number of other plaintiffs, will benefit from the settlement. Western Milling in Goshen manufactured and distributed Western Blend Hose Fee, Lot 5251. The horse feed killed 21 horses and severely sickened 28 others, said Paboojian and co-counsel Adam Stirrup. A lawsuit says Western Milling was well aware of contamination in its feed products. Between

The United States Dressage Federation™ (USDF) is pleased to announce the launch of the Dressage TestPro App, the official USEF/USDF tests app of the USDF. Dressage TestPro, currently available on iOS devices with an Android version expected to launch in June 2019, gives you access to all of the 2019 US Dressage Tests (Introductory-Fourth Level) on your mobile device. In addition to the convenience of having the tests easily accessible without a Wi-Fi or 4G connection, the Dressage TestPro app allows you to learn the tests in whatever style best suits you, from listening to audio recordings or following along as the app draws the diagrams of each movement. Users may also test themselves by drawing the tests, with the app notifying them of any mistakes along the way.

Three Advantages of Veterinarianadministered Equine Vaccinations

By: Jacquelin Boggs, DVM, MS, DACVIM, Senior Veterinarian, Equine Technical Services with Zoetis

Save do-it-yourself projects for crafting and home remodeling. When it comes to administering your horse’s vaccinations to protect against grave equine diseases, there simply is no room for error.

Yet recent reports from the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) revealed many horse owners and trainers were willing to accept some risk with their horse’s vaccinations, with 50% administering their horse’s vaccinations themselves. The leading reason for selfadministration of the vaccines was cost. It’s critical that horse owners understand the cost of inaccurately administering vaccinations could be their equine partner’s health and welfare. Improper administration of vaccinations can leave horses exposed to deadly disease, including core equine diseases such as rabies, which is always fatal. This is a risk no horse owner should take. 3 Benefits for Your Horse When a Veterinarian Administers Vaccines: Proper Vaccine Handling Vaccines require special handling and storage needs. Your veterinarian will be familiar with proper storage, handling and expiration dates to best preserve a vaccine’s effectiveness. Safe, Accurate Administration Safe administration of vaccines requires a clean environment and injection site. This is crucial because, without both, you could introduce harmful pathogens rather than protect against them. Tailored Vaccination Program Every horse is unique. Your veterinarian can work with you to customize a vaccine program based on your horse’s geography, age, reproductive status and level of exposure from comingling and travel. Help your horse achieve the highest level of equine wellness

Jacquelin Boggs, DVM, MS, DACVIM by working closely with your veterinarian to meet your horse’s individual needs. Ensure your horse is protected through annual vaccination against the five core equine diseases — rabies, West Nile, Eastern and Western equine encephalomyelitis, and tetanus — and ask your veterinarian about Core EQ Innovator™. The vaccine helps protect against each core equine disease and has been field tested in more than 1,000 horses, with 99.7% of horses being reactionfree.1,2 At Zoetis, we confidently stand behind our Innovator® vaccines with the Equine Immunization Support Guarantee, which is the most comprehensive guarantee available to horse owners. To be eligible for the Equine Immunization Support Guarantee, a horse must be vaccinated by a veterinarian.
