Round-Up Fall 2025 – The Wildest Party in the West Oct 16-19

Every October, cowboys and cowgirls from across Arizona and beyond dust off their saddles, pull on their boots, and head to the high desert near Cordes Junction for an event that feels like stepping back into the Old West. The El Zaribah Shriners Mounted Patrol is once again hosting its legendary Round-Up, scheduled for October 16-19, 2025 at EZ Ranch, promising an unforgettable blend of cattle drive action, trail riding adventure, and good-old-fashioned cowboy camaraderie.

breakfast, riders head home with memories, sore muscles, and stories they’ll retell for years.

The Spirit of the Shriners

At its heart, the RoundUp is more than just a cowboy party—it’s a tradition with purpose.

The El Zaribah Shriners Mounted Patrol hosts the event to benefit their patrol and community activities.

This isn’t just another weekend festival—it’s a working cattle drive with 200 head of cattle, a trail ride through Arizona’s rugged country, and a lively social gathering where everyone can kick back after a day in the saddle. The Shriners have built a reputation for putting on “the wildest party in the West,” and the 2025 edition is shaping up to be the best yet.

A Real Cattle Drive Experience

While many western-themed events lean toward rodeo competition or arena demonstrations, the Round-Up stands apart by taking participants into the heart of cowboy life. Riders join an authentic cattle drive, moving a herd across the EZ Ranch pastures while navigating desert washes, rolling hills, and open rangeland. It’s not a simulation—it’s the real thing.

The Shriners, long known for their charitable work, bring the same spirit of service and fellowship into the saddle. Every laugh around the campfire, every shared meal, and every long trot down the trail builds bonds that strengthen their mission.

This sense of giving back makes the Round-Up something more meaningful than a weekend escape. Participants know they’re not only enjoying themselves but also helping support the Shriners’ wider efforts in Arizona.

Details and Registration

The thrill of working alongside seasoned hands, guiding 200 head of cattle, and feeling the dust rise as the herd moves is something that stays with riders long after the weekend ends. For those who have dreamed of experiencing the cowboy lifestyle, this event delivers it with grit and authenticity. Rental horses are even available for those who don’t own a mount but still want to be part of the action.

Trail Rides, Gymkhana, and Fiesta Fun

The days are packed with activity. Thursday kicks off with check-in, a hearty dinner, and plenty of time to gather around the campfire and reconnect with old friends. Friday and Saturday are devoted to cattle work and trail rides, punctuated by chuckwagonstyle meals that keep everyone fueled for the long hours in the saddle.

On Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m., the excitement turns toward speed and skill with the Gymkhana, where riders and horses test their agility in timed games. Saturday night transforms into Fiesta Day, a celebration that includes dinner, live entertainment, and the presentation of buckles and prizes. By Sunday morning, after

Full event registration runs $250 per person, covering Thursday through Sunday and including meals—dinner Thursday, breakfast, lunch, and dinner Friday and Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday. For those who can’t stay the whole weekend, Fiesta Day on Saturday, October 18 is available for $175 per person, including Saturday lunch, Saturday dinner, and Sunday breakfast.

Gates open at noon on Thursday, October 16, and participants must register by October 9, 2025. Early registration is encouraged, as space is limited and demand is high for this one-of-a-kind cowboy gathering.

For details, interested riders can contact Fred Engle at 928-830-1335 or Doug Kurbat at 602-918-7077. Those needing horses can reach Wayne at 928-242-5062 for rental availability.

The Call of the West

Events like the Round-Up Fall 2025 remind us why the cowboy way of life continues to inspire. It’s not just about riding horses or pushing cattle—it’s about friendship, resilience, and the shared thrill of wide-open spaces. Whether you come for the cattle drive, the gymkhana, the fiesta, or simply the chance to camp under the Arizona stars, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for the heritage of the West.

So saddle up, mark your calendars, and answer the call. The El Zaribah Shriners Mounted Patrol wants all cowboys and cowgirls to ride into Cordes Junction this October. The Wildest Party in the West is waiting, and you won’t want to miss it.

As the developer of Racehorse Strength Equi-Block® and LaKOTA®, one of Canada’s top joint supplement and topical pain relief brands, as well as the co-developer of Magic Cushion®, SLIDE™ founder Rick Stewart knows a thing or two about combating joint pain. “I grew up in horse racing. We had one of the top standardbred racing stables in California and western Canada”, he states. Being in the racehorse business Stewart has dealt with his share of joint, ligament, tendon, hoof and back problems in his horses. “Lameness is the biggest thing that racehorse trainers deal with. It’s a never ending battle”, he says.

According to Stewart, feeding 200 mg a day of hyaluronic acid didn’t produce any noticeable benefits in his horses; neither did 500 mg or even 1,000 mg of hyaluronic acid daily. “It wasn’t until I starting feeding my horses 2,500 mg of hyaluronic acid a day that I began to see some pretty decent results”, he says. “I finally settled on 2,500 mg of hyaluronic acid twice a day for a total of 5,000 mg

In the early 1990’s, Stewart began feeding hyaluronic acid to his horses hoping to prevent joint problems from occurring. “I developed the first capsaicin based topical pain reliever for horses (Equi-Block®) and I was probably the first to feed hyaluronic acid, too. It wasn’t in any equine joint supplements back in the 90’s, but veterinarians were injecting it into painful joints and it seemed to work pretty good for a short period of time. I started feeding my sore horses 200 mg a day of hyaluronic acid. I did that for a couple of months and then gauged the results”.

daily and I’ve been feeding those dosages to my horses for three decades now. I put all my young horses on SLIDE™ and I’ve never had any of them develop joint problems as they got older. And it seems to stop degeneration of cartilage in horses with existing joint problems as they all improve on SLIDE™. I’ve seen some very profound results in horses that were already suffering from joint pain after feeding them SLIDE™ for less than 30 days, and so have many others that have used SLIDE™ on their lame horses”.

Stewart says that the majority of equine joint supplements on the market today with hylauronic acid are mainly glucosamine based with very small amounts of hyaluronic acid added for marketing purposes. “Hyaluronic acid at the doses that SLIDE™ provides absolutely works. But existing equine joint supplements with hyaluronic acid don’t have enough in them to see any benefits from the hyaluronic acid. The amount of hyaluronic acid in equine joint supplements averages about 200 mg per recommended daily serving; those small amounts won’t do anything for joints, or for intervertbral disc health”, he says. “SLIDE™ works as good as it does because it contains 5,000 mg of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid per recommended daily serving. That’s 4,800 mg MORE hyaluronic acid per day than the average equine supplement containing hyaluronic acid. No other equine supplement with hyaluronic acid comes anywhere close to providing the amount of hyaluronic acid found in SLIDE™”.

According to Stewart, keeping joints healthy and pain free is all about maintaining and increasing lubrication inside joints. “Having sufficient lubrication within the joint is actually what protects the cartilage. It’s like the oil in your vehicle engine; it’s the oil that protects the moving parts. If there isn’t enough oil then the parts wear down faster and eventually disintegrate. Same thing goes for protecting joint cartilage, you have to keep sufficient lubrication in the joint at all times as that’s what protects the cartilage on the bone ends”.

He continues; “Hyaluronic acid is the major compound that creates synovial fluid, which is the lubrication found inside joints. Race and performance horses need more joint support and

lubrication than a horse ridden for pleasure because of the workloads they place on their joints. There are some really good horses that have had their competitive careers cut short due to joint damage. But it doesn’t have to be that way anymore if horse owners take a preventative approach using SLIDE™”.

In his 30 years of using high doses of hyaluronic acid Stewart has never seen any ill effects, just a multitude

of incredible therapeutic benefits. “Hyaluronic acid has a great safety profile. It’s water soluble and doesn’t build up or get stored in the body. It’s constantly being used up and replenished. In humans, our bodies naturally make 5,000 mg of hyaluronic acid per day when we’re in our 20’s, but internal production begins to decline dramatically in our 30’s. At age 50, our bodies are only making 2,500 mg a day of hyaluronic acid; just half the amount it made when we were

in our 20’s. And at age 75, we only have one quarter the amount of hyaluronic acid in our body that we had in our 20’s”, he points out. “It’s no wonder our joints and intervertebral discs fall apart and we get joint and low back pain as we get older; there’s not enough hyaluronic acid being produced by our bodies anymore in order to maintain sufficient lubrication in our joints or the gel-like fluid inside the discs of the spine. Don’t kid yourself that there isn’t a correlation between

From previous page

hyaluronic acid levels and cartilage and intervertebral disc degeneration as we age - there is”.

Stewart maintains the same holds true for wrinkles and crepey skin as people grow older, that there isn’t sufficient amounts of hyaluronic acid in the body to keep the dermis and epidermis nourished and healthy. “If you bring your hyaluronic acid levels back up you’ll see some magical things begin to happen. I personally take 2,800 mg of hyaluronic acid every single day and I have no joint or back pain and great skin and I’m 60 years old”.

Stewart says the hyaluronic acid supplements currently on the market for people are no better than existing equine supplements. “Depending on the brand you buy the daily recommended amount of hyaluronic acid is 100 to 200 mg a day; basically about the same amount as most equine supplements recommend. These amounts are way too low to see any noticeable benefits. If you’re 50 or older and your daily internal production of hyaluronic acid is down by 2,500 mg or more from what your body produced in your 20’s, do you really think you’re going to see great results on 100 or 200 mg a day? No, you’re not. I have long maintained that hyaluronic acid is the ‘fountain of youth’ nutrient that mankind has long been searching for, but you have to take enough of it if you want to see real benefits”.

A palatable powder that horses eat right up, SLIDE™ isn’t just hyaluronic acid, it’s a joint supplement unlike anything ever put on the market for horses. The two recommended daily servings not only provide your horse with an incredible, industry leading 5,000 mg of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid per day, but also 5,000 mg of N-acetyl glucosamine (a precursor for hyaluronic

acid synthesis), 5,000 mg of glucosamine HCL, 5,000 mg of hydrolyzed collagen and 2,000 mg of unhydrolyzed collagen type II (this is the major collagen found in articular cartilage and intervertebral discs of the spine. SLIDE™ is the only equine hyaluronic acid supplement that contains this im-portant form of collagen). None of the ingredients are banned substances for equine competition.

SLIDE™ also provides many other great health benefits for horses besides joint support, including helping heal and prevent ulcers. We encourage you to read the SLIDE™ equine and human eBooks online at slidejointcare.com as it describes in detail what makes SLIDE™ the premier hyaluronic acid joint supplements in the world today. It’s well worth the read and full of great information many people don’t know about hyalu-ronic acid.

Now affordably priced so equine owners and trainers can reap its incredible benefits on their own horses, SLIDE™ is available in 4.4 lb ($120.00 USD) and 22

lb ($400.00 USD) sizes. The larger size is an incredible value and treats 5 horses for 30 to 60 days for just $40.00 to $80.00 USD per horse depending on whether it’s fed once or twice daily. Even with just a single daily serving, SLIDE™ still provides far more hyaluronic acid (2,500 mg a day) than any other equine supplement containing this important and vital compound for equine health and well-being.

SLIDE™ is also available in human ($60.00 USD) and canine ($70.00 USD) versions, both contain the highest amounts of hyaluronic acid you will find in any human or canine HA supplement on the market today.

SLIDE™ is available at your local tack store on online at www.SlideJointCare.com

The National Reining Horse Association proudly congratulates Tish Fappani on achieving the distinguished milestone of Million Dollar Rider, a feat she reached at the NRHA South Central Affiliate Regional Championship & 100X Reining Classic in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Tish’s accomplishment not only cements her place among reining’s elite but also completes a rare trifecta: with husband Andrea, NRHA’s all-time leading money-earner

Tish Fappani Newest NRHA Million Dollar Rider

and Million Dollar Owner, and son Luca, an NRHA Million Dollar Rider, the Fappani family now represents generations of reining excellence at the sport’s highest level.

While the Fappani name has long been synonymous with reining greatness, Tish’s journey to the million mark is distinctly her own. Known

for her feel, finesse and unshakable competitive drive, she has built her career at some of the sport’s most prestigious events, including her fair share of NRHA Futurity Non Pro Championships. Her career highlights include winning the 2024 NRHA Futurity® Level 4

Non Pro Championship aboard Wish I Was Yours (Andrea and Tish Fappani: owners, NRHA Corporate Partner Tamarack Ranch LLC: breeder and Tish Fappani: nominator), earning $75,000, and the 2024 100X Reining Classic Invitational Level 4 Non Pro Championship with the same horse, adding another $52,000 to her record.

Tish officially crossed the million-dollar threshold aboard Tight Genes, a son of Joes Genes, when she marked a 221 to earn Co-Championships in the 2025 The Invitational, 100X Reining Classic Futurity and the North American Reining Stakes Non Pro Futurities, all run concurrently at Tulsa.

At the same event where Tish made history, Andrea captured the 2025 The Invitational Open Futurity Championship aboard Man of The Year, another son of Joes Genes. Their parallel victories underscore the depth of the family’s impact on the sport, with Tish’s milestone serving as the crowning moment.

With this achievement, Tish becomes the third member of her family to surpass $1 million in NRHA lifetime earnings as a rider—and adding yet another jewel to the dynasty of one of reining’s most influential families. She is now one of only 7 individuals to be both an NRHA Million Dollar Owner – and a Million Dollar Rider.

10th Annual Legacy Ranch Horse Sale

Draws Record Crowds and Strong Bids in Prescott, Arizona

The 10th Annual Legacy Ranch Horse Sale, held September 13 at the Prescott (Arizona) Rodeo Grounds, marked a milestone year with record-breaking attendance and strong bidding.

The 10th Annual Legacy Ranch Horse Sale, held September 13 at the Prescott (Arizona) Rodeo Grounds, marked a milestone year with record-breaking attendance and strong bidding. Hosted by K4 Ranches and Diamond A Cattle Co., the sale once again showcased working ranch horses from some of the most historic programs in the West.

Buyers from across the country gathered to bid on a select lineup of ranch-raised geldings, mares, prospects and broodmares. Horses carrying generations of proven bloodlines and countless hours of ranch work changed hands, many heading to new homes where they’ll continue their legacy in arenas, on ranches and with families.

The sale was held in conjunction with Olsen’s EquiFest and featured a highlight match roping between ProRodeo world champion Tuf Cooper and young phenom Riley Webb, thrilling the crowd and adding to the excitement of the day.

“We couldn’t be more proud of what the Legacy Sale has

become over the past 10 years,” said Sarah Kieckhefer of K4 Ranches. “This event is about more than selling horses; it’s about preserving ranching traditions, celebrating horsemanship and connecting these incredible horses with the next generation.”

The high-selling horses were FSF Berries N Cream, a 2021 brown mare by Fast Steppin Fiesta, and Boogers Fight Fire, a 2020 bay gelding by Boogers Cross Bell, each of whom sold for $50,000.

The top 10 horses in the sale averaged $35,600, while geldings averaged $23,844, riding mares averaged $21,458, and stallions averaged $19,000. Broodmares went for an average of $12,667.

Kieckhefer said the strong overall averages reflect the demand for proven ranch and rope-horse bloodlines.

“Potential buyers have made it a point to study up on bloodlines and tell us the importance of the history of our bloodlines, like horses going back to Driftwood Ike and Cee Booger Red, whether it’s for performance, breeding or just trail riding,” she said.

The Legacy Ranch Horse Sale thanks its sponsors for their support in making this milestone event possible: PerforMix Corp., Zoetis, CKP Insurance, Copper Ridge Equine, Dykstra Machinery, Caviness Beef Packers, Dean Cluck Feedyard, Border Valley Trading, Maberry Insurance and American Hat Co.

Childress will address convention attendees at the Grand Ballroom at the South Point Hotel and Casino, Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 9 a.m. (PT).

The gathering of PRCA members precedes the biggest event on PRORODEO’s annual calendar, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge at the Thomas & Mack Center in Vegas, Dec. 4-13. “We are honored Richard Childress will keynote our convention,” said Tom Glause, CEO of the PRCA. “He is a quintessential American success story who started with a $20 car to become one of NASCAR’s most successful and enduring team owners. He truly appreciates the work ethic of our cowboys and what they represent.”

But Childress has had other successes. Childress was the first NASCAR owner to win championships in all three of NASCAR’s national series, and his 14 titles are second all time. Childress was the recipient of the Bill France Award of Excellence in 1986.

“It’s truly an honor to be invited as the keynote speaker at the PRCA convention,” Childress said. “The rodeo community represents hard work, dedication, and the spirit of competition — values I deeply respect and share from my own experiences in racing and beyond. I look forward to being in Las Vegas on December 3 to connect with everyone and celebrate the incredible athletes and traditions of rodeo.”

Richard Childress PRCA Convention Keynote Speaker

The 2025 PRCA National Convention, held December 1-4 in Las Vegas, has the theme “Where Rodeo Meets, Connects, and Celebrates!”.

Childress, the consummate self-made racer, was respectable behind the wheel. Between 1969 and 1981, he had six top-five finishes and 76 top 10s.

Having formed Richard Childress Racing in 1972, Childress retired from driving in 1981.

That set in motion his incredible history as a NASCAR owner.

Much of that history is linked to one of NASCAR’s greatest drivers, inaugural NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt (2010), who won six championships and 67 races between 1984 and 2000 for RCR.

As in prior years, the convention will feature the State of the PRCA address from Glause as well as the PRCA Member Tradeshow. The PRCA National Convention is the annual meeting of the organization’s members. It is the gathering to review the achievements of the prior year and lay out new strategic areas of focus for the year ahead. The evenings are highlighted with fan favorites: the 18th annual Wrangler Gold Buckle Gala on Dec. 1 honoring ProRodeo Hall of Famers stock Billy and Pam Minick as the 2025 Legend of ProRodeo; the PRCA Welcome Reception on Dec. 2, and the PRCA Annual Awards Banquet on Dec. 3 to recognize the extraordinary achievements of PRCA members. The 2025 PRCA National Convention will take place at the South Point. Registration is open for PRCA members and their guests at www. prcaconvention.com.

WICKENBURG COWBOY & NFR STEER WRESTLER

RUSS DOLVEN PASSES AWAY AT 83

Steer wrestler Russ Dolven, a two-time qualifier for the National Finals Rodeo, passed away Sept. 25 at his home in Wickenburg, Ariz. He was 83 years old.

Dolven qualified for the NFR twice in his career in 1973 and 1976. Following his appearances in Oklahoma City,

the previous site of the NFR before Las Vegas, he went on to win become the year-end champion of the Montana and Turquoise circuits in 1978 and 1982, respectively.

A native of Lexington, Ore., Dolven moved to Dillon, Mont., after his childhood to run heavy equipment for the forest service. That was also where

he connected with Benny Reynolds, who introduced Dolven to steer wrestling and jump started his career in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

Dolven moved to Wickenburg in 1970 and met

his wife, Mary O’Hair. The two married in 1971. Following his career in PRORODEO, Dolven and Mary served the Wickenburg community for over 20 years with various hay needs, including loading, unloading or moving. The couple’s first hay squeeze was purchased in 2004.

Kenneth Galyean The AQHA judge and NCHA Hall of Famer died Sept 9th

Kenneth Galyean, a man bigger than life, honest to his core, and who loved family above all, passed away on September 9, 2025, leaving behind a legacy built not only on his own integrity and horsemanship, but also on the generations that followed in his footsteps. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy.

While the world knew Kenneth as a respected horseman, AQHA judge (including at the first AQHA World Championship Show), and a 2014 inductee into the NCHA Members Hall of Fame, those who knew him best saw him as the heart of his family.

Family was his greatest pride and joy—the foundation of everything he did. Kenneth’s life was a testament to the values he held dear—strength, courage, honesty and unwavering devotion to family.

His guiding hand shaped not only the sport of cutting but also a remarkable dynasty within it. His sons, Jody and Gil, each went on to achieve great success and leave a lasting impact on the horse industry, carrying forward the foundation their father instilled in them. Kenneth was equally proud of his daughter, Shannon, and her success in the business world, a reflection of the same drive, character and determination he valued most.

Kenneth’s grandchildren have carried the Galyean name with equal passion and distinction. Beau and Wesley Galyean both earned induction into the NCHA Rider Hall of Fame, and each won the coveted NCHA Open Futurity Championship, while their sister Christina Cox captured the NCHA Non-Pro Futurity Championship.

Together with their father Jody—also an NCHA Futurity Champion—the family represents a rare legacy of four Futurity champions across two generations.

But Kenneth’s proudest accomplishments were not measured in trophies or accolades. They were found in the family he guided, encouraged and stood behind every step of the way. He found his greatest joy in watching his sons, daughter, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren in the show pen and in life—all of whom have become highly accomplished in their own right. He also loved following them in their sports and activities beyond the horse arena. Kenneth never ceased to share his honest wisdom, knowledge and sound advice in all areas of life, leaving an imprint on each new generation. His greatgrandchildren—Daxton and River Galyean, Leighton, Ledger and Levin Cox, Aislynn and Gracelyn Galyean—brought him endless happiness and hope for the future.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy Galyean; his children, Jody Galyean and wife Bridget, Gil Galyean and wife Becky, and Shannon Brewer and husband Charles; as well as Jody’s former wife, Debbie Galyean; his grandchildren, Beau Galyean and wife Ashley, Wesley Galyean and wife Kristen, Christina Cox and husband Lloyd, Brady Brewer, Garrett Galyean and Brody Galyean; his great-grandchildren, Daxton Galyean, River Galyean, Leighton Cox, Ledger Cox, Levin Cox, Aislynn Galyean and Gracelyn Galyean.

Kenneth Galyean leaves behind a family who adored him, a community who admired him and a sport forever shaped by his influence. His life was a testament to honesty, leadership and, above all, love of family. His legacy will live on in every life he touched.

“Kenneth Galyean: A pillar of integrity, a champion horseman and, above all, a family man whose legacy shines in every generation.”

Strong Week at FEI Youth Jumping Nations Cup Final with Podium Results in Young

Lier, Belgium – The U.S. Jumping Teams competing at the FEI Youth Jumping Nations Cup Final completed their week at Azelhof Horse Events in Lier, Belgium, with impressive results, finishing first in the Young Rider category, and third in the Junior category over three days of competition. The U.S. Jumping Young Rider Team finished on a final total of zero faults to top the podium, while the U.S. Jumping Junior Team took bronze on combined final score of four faults. Both teams were led by Chef d’Equipe Anne Kursinski and Team Leader Erin Keating.

“We had another very successful week here in Belgium, and I am extremely proud of our athletes and their horses for their effort, focus, and determination this week,” said Chef d’Equipe Anne Kursinski. “With podium finishes in both categories, and a win in a very competitive Young Rider final, these athletes have gained valuable experience in a high-pressure team atmosphere which is crucial in their continued progression through the pathway. I always leave these finals with such optimism and excitement for the future of our sport and program, as well as for these athletes, as they continue to develop and deliver results for the U.S.”

Rider and Junior Categories

week,” said Lignelli. “When you have so many different areas to think about as a rider, their leadership really allowed us to hone-in on what it would take to deliver the best results possible. I’ve had such a great experience both years I’ve done this Final, last year winning with the Junior team, and again this year with the Young Riders. I felt like this year I had more experience and a better plan

The U.S. Jumping Young Rider Team produced consistent results throughout the first and second qualifying competitions, and with a tremendous effort in the final round, the first three combinations jumped clear to definitively secure their win. The team entered the Final after finishing atop the first qualifying class on Thursday on zero faults and in second overall in the second qualifying class on four faults on Friday.

With the final starting with a clean score sheet for the six qualified teams, Skylar Wireman (Bonsall, Calif.) and Barclino B, a 2016 Holsteiner gelding (Constanzehof’s Barcley x Lasino) owned by Wireman Investment Group, cared for by Skylar Wireman, served as the lead-off combination for the team, tasked with the track designed by Henk Linders (NED). The pair jumped a proficient clear and stopped the timers in 73.34 seconds to set the pace for the team from the very start.

Olivia Sweetnam (Wellington, Fla.) and Epic, a 2015 Anglo European gelding (Billy Mexico x Flyinge Electro) owned by Monika Preston and Sweet Oak Farm, cared for by Ariana Anglessey, were second in the team’s order, making their mark with another strong clear round to keep the team on zero heading into the third rotation.

Alexa Elle Lignelli (New York, N.Y.) and her own XO Zadora, a 2013 KWPN mare (Zavall VDL x Padinus), cared for by Britte Jaeger and Zachary Will, who jumped clear for the team in all three classes of the week, helped to cement the team’s podium-topping performance with a third consecutive clear round for the team, relieving the anchor pair of Carlee McCutcheon (Aubrey, Texas) and Aralyn Blue, a 2014 Oldenburg mare (Chacco Blue x Ludwigs AS) owned by Road to the Top, cared for by Katy Vokacova, from needing to jump in the final round.

“Anne [Kursinski] and Erin [Keating]’s leadership allowed us to really feel prepared and understand where we needed to focus to perform, which was a huge part of the team’s success this

coming into this championship. XO Zadora is such a special mare, and I feel like we’ve been building towards this kind of result with the consistency and connection in our partnership. So many people help to make these kinds of results possible, but a huge thank you to my team, Zack Will, Diego Perez Bilbao, Lillie Keenan, and Guga Malta de Abreau, of course, my parents for everything they do, and the USA Jumping program for giving us the opportunity to be here.”

The U.S. Jumping Junior Team also saw success after a strong week of qualifying competition leading into the final, which saw the team jump to zero faults in both the first and second qualifying classes.

Campbell Brown (Fayetteville, Ark.) and Colina Z, a 2014 Zangersheide mare (Hofgut Liederbach’s Ingmar x Carthago) owned by MMK Equestrian LLC, cared for by Arturo Vidal, were the pathfinders, crossing through the finish with just four faults and stopping the timers in 71.42 seconds. Sophia Ayers (Reddick, Fla.) and her own Conthinder, a 2011 Oldenburg gelding (Conthargos x Nintender), cared for by Shanna Lee, ensured the team continued to fight for a podium position after producing a clear round in the second rotation.

JJ Torano (Wellington, Fla.) and Lyon 50, a 2014 Hanoverian stallion (Lord Argentinus x Lex Lugar) owned by Kadley Farm LLC and North Run, cared for by Arturo Vidal, secured the team’s second clear round to keep the competition tight with both Sweden and Ireland heading into the final rotation to determine the podium placings. Philippa Ammann (Wellington, Fla.) and Zarina de Vidau, a 2011 Caballo de Deporte Español mare (Diamant de Semilly x Coeur de Nuit) owned by Temple Equestrian LLC, cared for by Duncan Skinner, rode a fast four-fault round as anchors to ensure the team would stay in the top three, marking a third consecutive podium finish for the U.S. Jumping Junior Team at the event. The team finished on a final total of four faults at the conclusion of the class, to take third place behind Sweden and Ireland.

USDA details initiative to tackle rural veterinary shortage

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has launched the Rural Veterinary Action Plan, which aims to address the nationwide shortage of food animal veterinarians and strengthen protections for animal health, ranchers, and the U.S. food supply.

The plan includes five key actions. First, the USDA will expand funding and streamline

applications for the Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP) and the Veterinary Services Grant Program (VSGP).

Second, the agency will study rural veterinary shortages, with a report expected in 2026.

Third, USDA will pursue new

incentives—such as special pay rates, tuition reimbursement, and recruitment bonuses—to attract veterinarians into federal service.

Fourth, USDA will catalog existing federal programs to help veterinarians finance rural practices. Finally, USDA will host listening sessions with schools and stakeholders to

identify barriers and improve recruitment, particularly from rural backgrounds.

These measures reflect USDA’s commitment to safeguarding animal health, public health, and U.S. trade through a stronger veterinary workforce. In a statement released by the department, Secretary Brooke L. Rollins says:

“Rural veterinarians are vital for the agricultural economy in the United States. Our farmers and ranchers rely on these critical services to prevent the transmission of animal disease, protect our food supply, and support America’s rural economy. As the number of rural food animal veterinarians continues to decline, USDA is putting Farmers First to ensure we build back our first line of defense in our animal food production system – the rural veterinarian. With these new investments in scholarships and pay incentives, USDA is not only strengthening our animal food production system but also listening to producers and veterinarians across the country to ensure our programs meet real-world needs.

STETSON WRIGHT CLAIMS DRAMATIC WIN ON HELL YA ROSCO

After his 2024 PRORODEO season was completely ruined by a hamstring injury, superstar Stetson Wright is making up for lost time in 2025.

The eight-time PRCA World Champion had his talent on full display late Saturday night at the Ellensburg (Wash.) Rodeo Division 1 Rank 45 Xtreme Bulls.

Wright had an electrifying 91.5-point ride on Corey & Lange Rodeo’s Hell Ya Rosco in the finals to claim the two-head average win with 179 points.

“Right before that I watched Ky (Hamilton) make a great ride (89.5 points) and it had me all fired up,” Wright said moments after his victory during an in-arena interview with The Cowboy Channel. “I knew how steep that bull was going to be and I just kept trying to keep my chin down and he kept raising it up but as long as you keep your hand shut you can get some things done.”

Hamilton, the 2023 PRCA World Champion Bull Rider, finished second in the average with 176.5 points.

Les Vogt

Two-time AQHA World Champion and an NRCHA hall of famer passed away

Les Vogt, a legendary horseman, trainer, and innovator in the reined cow horse industry, passed away suddenly on September 6, 2025, at the age of 83.

Born into a family of horsemen, Les grew up learning the trade from his grandfather, Chet Vogt, and was riding almost before he could walk. As a boy, he could often be found racing bareback along canal banks on his mare Sweetheart. At just 9 years old, he started his first horse—a neighbor’s Shetland pony—and by 14, he was working at Sun A Via Ranch under the guidance of Johnny Lamont, where he was introduced to the artistry of the Spanish Vaquero tradition.

Les went on to enjoy one of the most celebrated careers in reined cow horse history. In 1970, he and Wrong Key, together with Bobby Ingersoll, won the inaugural Snaffle Bit Futurity, a landmark event in the sport, and he went on to win the Futurity again in 1973. Over the years, he earned more than 30 major championship titles, including 15 world championships in reining and reined cow horse events. His unmatched skill was further proven at the AQHA World Championship Show, where in his only appearance he achieved a feat still unequaled—winning both the senior working cow horse and senior reining world titles.

In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, Les was inducted into the National Reined Cow Horse Association Hall of Fame in 2004. He owned King Fritz and trained Chex A Nic, who also earned Hall of Fame honors. In 2020, he was presented with the Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity and National Reined Cow Horse Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.

Beyond his competitive success, Les was known as a “trainer of trainers,” generously sharing his expertise through clinics, training videos and mentorship of countless horsemen and -women. He also built a respected business designing custom bits and spurs and enjoyed team roping at rodeos throughout California. As recent as last month, Les won the RCR Arena Paso Robles Team Roping Event, as a champion heeler.

Les’ passion, talent and generosity left an indelible mark on the horse world. He will be remembered not only for his extraordinary accomplishments but also for his deep love of the Spanish Vaquero tradition, his willingness to teach and his enduring story-telling and infectious laugh, all which will influence the next generation of riders.

For more than 50 years, Les was also a proud member of the Rancheros Visitadores, where he treasured the camaraderie of lifelong friends and continued to compete in roping and cow horse events.

Les is survived by his son, Brooks Borror, and grandsons Tyler and Travis Borror and son Steve Alford; his brother, Chet Vogt; and his sister, Susan Vogt Benes.

These well-rounded individuals are today’s students and tomorrow’s equine industry leaders. With an education, great mentoring and a love of the American Quarter Horse, these young adults will become the next generation of leaders who will ensure the continued success of the equine industry by working in a variety of occupations.

“Awarding scholarships is an exciting milestone, as it celebrates the generosity of our donors and the bright futures of the young adults they support,” said Laura Owens, program director for the Foundation.

What is the risk of screwworm to horses?

Screwworm myiasis (infestation) is caused by fly larvae (maggots) that feed on living tissue of any warm-blooded animal. Humans can be infected with screwworm larvae. The larvae are deposited on wounds or superficial body cavities such as the nose and sheath of horses where they feed and grow. Untreated wounds often develop multiple infestations which are more likely to kill the animal.

Has screwworm ever entered the United States?

Screwworm was declared eradicated in 1966 from the U.S. using the sterile insect technique, which involves releasing sterile male flies to disrupt reproduction, gradually reducing the pest population. There was an outbreak of screwworm in 2016 in Florida, which was controlled by sterile flies and was successfully limited to the Florida Keys. This 2016 screwworm eradication effort in Florida was estimated to cost over $10 million for implementing control measures including the release of 154 million sterile flies and other control measures, such as animal checkpoints.

need to focus on surveillance for early detection and treatment of infected domestic and wild animals as well as movement restrictions to ensure only healthy treated animals are moved.

How could a screwworm detection in the United States impact Equestrian Sports?

SCREWWORM Q&A

State and federal animal health officials would be responsible for implementing control and eradication efforts, namely quarantines and movement restrictions. Horses infected with screwworm or horses in a geographic area with screwworm present could be placed under quarantine and movement restrictions, at the discretion of state animal health officials. States may restrict equine movement and activities such as equestrian events in a geographic area. As the USDA has not provided specific quarantine or movement restriction parameters, states are developing their own plans and protocols for responding to screwworm incursion.

What is the Federation doing to prepare for a potential screwworm incursion?

Why is the US concerned about a screwworm incursion?

If screwworm were to spread into the United States, it would result in significant economic losses and threats to animal health and welfare. The critical control measure is the release of sterile flies. Currently, the production of sterile flies is limited to one facility in Panama which is working at maximum production. Depending on the prevalence of screwworm in Central America and Mexico, the facility may be unable to produce enough sterile flies for expanded distribution to the United States. Thus, US control efforts would

The Federation veterinarians are working collaboratively with the states to develop a response plan which would allow healthy safe competition to continue in the event of a screwworm detection in the United States. Any protocol for events during a screwworm incursion would be at the discretion of the state veterinarian in the venue state. For this type of disease situation, entry requirements to the event could include a requirement for veterinary examination for issuance of a certificate of veterinary inspection which includes an antiparasitic treatment (ivermectin/moxidectin) statement and examination on arrival. The federation will continue to work with states on a screwworm response plan for equestrian events.

Chester Weber earns 22nd National Championship at 2025 USEF Combined Driving National Championships for Horses

Reigning champion Chester Weber (Ocala, Fla.) came out to claim his 22nd national champion title in the four-in-hand division. Weber brought his team of eight well-matched bay geldings—seven KWPN and one Oldenburg—a combination of veteran and newer horses who earned good results across the three phases.

Though Weber and his team were the lone entry in the FEI3* division, they produced excellent results, earning a dressage score of 39.12 that was the highest of the show across all divisions. With a clean marathon and just one ball down in the cones phase, Weber finished on a score of 149.39 to continue his legacy as the country’s leading four-in-hand driver.

Currently, U.S. ports remain closed to imports of cattle, bison, and horses from Mexico.

(Washington, D.C., September 21, 2025) – Hours ago, Mexico’s National Service of Agro-Alimentary Health, Safety, and Quality (SENASICA) confirmed a new case of New World screwworm (NWS) in Sabinas Hidalgo, located in the state of Nuevo León, less than 70 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.

This is now the northernmost detection of NWS during this outbreak, and the one most threatening to the American cattle and livestock industry. Sabinas Hidalgo is located near the major highway from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, to Laredo, Texas, which is one of the most heavily trafficked commercial thoroughfares in the world.
