The Kimes Ranch NRCHA Derby returns to WestWorld for its fifth consecutive year, running May 28 through June 7. All eleven days are free and open to the public — making it one of the most accessible elite equestrian events in the country. But don’t let the price of admission fool you. The Derby features $125,000 in added money for elite 4- and 5-year-old horse-and-rider teams, with nine divisions that welcome competitors at every level — from million-dollar Open riders to Non Pro, Limited, and Boxing exhibitors. Horse and rider pairs compete in three main events: herd work, which involves cutting cattle from the herd;
rein work, described as the equestrian equivalent of figure skating; and fence work, fastpaced runs chasing and turning a cow along the rail. The 2025 Run for a Million takes place August 11–16 at the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center in Las Vegas, and it is far more than a horse show. The event offers more than $1 million in prize money, including a full million-dollar purse for the flagship Million Dollar Reining Competition.
The event is also chronicled in Paramount Network’s unscripted reality series The Last Cowboy, which follows riders and horses competing in reining, cow horse, and cutting as they train for the high-stakes culminating event. Sold out year after year.
Q - The Heart of Cave Creek: You are a familiar face at local events like the Cave Creek Rodeo; what inspired Stewart Mechanical to make local event sponsorships such a central part of your business's mission?
A - Honestly, it comes down to who we are as a company. At Stewart Mechanical, we’ve always believed we’re more than just an air conditioning company, we’re part of this community. We see our customers as neighbors first. The same families we’re helping stay cool in the summer are the ones we run into at rodeos, school events, and community gatherings. Supporting those events is just another way of showing up for them outside of the job. It also reflects how we’ve always ran our business. We’re not trying to be faceless in a company; we want people to know who we are, trust us and feel comfortable calling us when they need help. Being present at local events helps build those relationships in a genuine way, and it keeps us connected to the community that keeps our business going. We also proudly sponsor other rodeos such as the 406 Rodeo, which is filled with the next generation of rodeo. We see it as investing in our community and our youth, the two most important things. Our family has lived here for five-generations, and we hope to keep this sport alive in Cave Creek for many generations to come.

Dakota is our daughter but has an undeniable passion for horses and barrel racing. She is eager and willing to learn so she can take her and her horse Kallie to the next level. Dakota encourages and mentors’ other younger children to get involved with horses and barrel racing every chance she gets. Several people ask, “What does air conditioning have to do with barrel racing?” and I always tell them “Everything”. The Stewart family has a passion for both and as we all know in Arizona, everyone needs air conditioning. Our family is either out at the arena or working on an air conditioning unit.
Q - A Family Legacy: With your own daughter competing as a young barrel racer, how has watching her journey in the sport deepened your family’s connection to the local horse community?
Q - Empowering the Arena: You currently sponsor two talented barrel racers; what qualities do you look for in the athletes you support, and how does seeing them compete reflect the values of your company?
A - When we choose someone to sponsor, character and heart come first. We want to see that passion for what they do and the love for their horses that help them do it. We are proudly sponsoring two beautiful young women, Madisyn Desautelle and Dakota Stewart. We presented both of these young women with beautiful custom Stewart Mechanical buckles made by Sheridan Buckle Co.
Madisyn is everything we were looking for, plus some. She carries herself with kindness, strength, and professionalism. Madisyn and her horse Winnie show up for every race and give it their all.
A - The Stewart family has always been a part of the horse community, but watching our daughter grow as a young barrel racer has added a whole new layer of meaning to our involvement in the horse community. What started as supporting her interest has turned into a shared family experience that keeps us grounded in the values that define this lifestyle— hard work, resilience, and genuine connection. You spend long days at the arena, early mornings at the barn, and countless hours alongside other families who quickly become more than just familiar faces; they become part of your extended circle. We have made so many great relationships along the way and work closely with others in the equine community. Cortney Morris is an extremely decorated barrel racer and currently trains Dakota in the arena. Dakota strives to be everything Cortney is and looks up to her.
Q - The Power of "Family Owned": As a five-generation HVAC family, how do your individual roles and personal bond help you provide a more "neighborly" level of air conditioning service to your customers?
A - Being a five-generation HVAC family isn’t just something we say, it’s really how we operate day to day. Everyone has their role, but because we are family and have been in the industry since our great, great uncles Gust and Adam Goettl founded Goettl in 1939, things just flow naturally. We communicate easily, step in for one another when needed, and there’s a built-in level of trust that makes everything run smoother. That family connection definitely shows up
in how we treat our customers, too. We’re not looking at people as just another service call, we treat them like neighbors. The same values that have been passed down through generations, being honest, showing up when we say we will, and respecting someone’s home and business are just part of who we are. At the end of the day, I think people can feel and see that. It’s not a big corporate experience, it’s more personal. When you call in you will either get me (Samantha Stewart) or Micheal Stewart taking your call. You’re working with a family that genuinely cares, and that’s what gives it that “neighborly” feel. We are not building our company to sell off to corporate, we are building to pass down to our children, Tanner and Dakota.
Q - Balancing Boots and Business: Between managing 24/7 HVAC services and participating in local horse events, what is the secret to how your family works together to keep both the business and your community passions thriving?
A - Honestly, the “secret” is we don’t really treat it like two separate things. Our business and our time in the horse community both come from the same place—family, hard work, and just showing up for people. We work closely with El Hay Guy and Clover C Productions to keep Larkyn Memorial Arena, which is our local arena, open and beautiful for all types of equine sports. We show up as a company to help where needed and as a family to support our daughter.

“This means a lot to me because the World Cup Final is what I grew up watching. Kent Farrington LLC and Rabbit Root Stables, LLC, and cared for by Denise Moriarty, who helped start the week off on the right foot for Team Farrington after securing the victory in the first phase of competition on Thursday.
“It’s important to note I rode two horses here and I couldn’t have done it without Toulayna on day one. I have two exceptional mares that put me in the position that I needed to win the title,” added Farrington.
On the pressure of returning last both on Friday, and in today’s first and second rounds, Farrington noted he learned to deal with pressure and nerves at a young age and has come to accept that being in the moment and not letting distractions filter in has been the key to his ability to rise to the moment and deliver.
“Ever since I was a little kid, I have always put a lot of pressure on myself. At a certain point, there’s no more pressure to put on, so I just focus on the task at hand and being present and one with my horse. “It’s always great to win the World Cup Final, but never better than on home soil! Most impressive though was that we showed a lot of depth this week with five US riders finishing in the top twelve placings,” said Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland. “Across the board, our riders all rode extremely well, and finally, kudos to the organizers for producing a world class event and to Anderson Lima who built masterful courses all week.”
Dinan and Out of the Blue SCF, a U.S.-bred 2014 Belgian Warmblood mare (Verdi TN x San Patrignano Cassini) owned by Grant Road Partners LLC, and cared for by Lou Boudin and Pepper Pritchard, delivered another impressive performance in their second consecutive Longines FEI Jumping World Cup Final together, pushing up through the standings with a string of clear rounds throughout the week. The pair jumped clear in every major round of the competition, producing two clear rounds in today’s final.
“I’m in awe of my horse. She was spectacular in both rounds today. I owe everything to her,” said Dinan. “The World Cup Final is a big deal. It’s a championship every year and something we all aim for. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a handful of wonderful horses in my career, and the Final is something my team has always prioritized. My coach Beat [Mändli] won it in 2007, and I remember watching it on TV and my first World Cup Final was in 2014 when Daniel [Deusser] won. It’s unbelievable to be on the podium with these superstars and it’s something I’m proud of.”
The U.S. finished four combinations inside of the top ten placings, with Aaron Vale (Williston, Fla.) and Carissimo 25 taking seventh overall on 16 total penalties, and Lillie Keenan (New York, N.Y.) and Kick On, finishing in 10th overall. Jacob Pope (Columbia, Md.) and Highway FBH impressed with a strong clear round to finish the weekend in 12th overall, while Laura Kraut (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and Tres Bien Z, took 18th in the final standings on 32 penalties.

ProRodeo Hall of Famer Nancy Sheppard passed away on April 8 at her home in Globe, Ariz. She was 96 years old.
Sheppard was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2003 in Colorado Springs, Colo., as a contract personnel selection. She started her career as a trick rider at 9 years old, riding and roping at rodeos across the country from 193963.
Sheppard was born to a ranching family on Dec. 29, 1929, in Fort Worth, Texas. Her father was a Cowboys’ Turtles Association member, and her mother showed horses at the Cowtown Coliseum as a child. Her father, Kelley Cleve, was a roper, and he signed the original document to boycott a rodeo in Boston in 1936. That group of cowboys and cowgirls forced the promoter to improve judging and increase the prize money. They picked the name Cowboys’ Turtle Association in reflection of the fact that they
have been slow to act, but finally stuck their necks out for their cause.
Nancy’s son, Lex, was a PRCA bull rider from 1971-83, and is a Gold Card member. Lynn Sheppard, Nancy’s husband, was a PRORODEO steer wrestler, tie-down roper
and team roper from 194560. Lynn’s brother, Chuck Sheppard was a PRCA World Champion Team Roper in 1946, and was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2000.
By the time Nancy turned 11, she was performing at the
Pendleton (Ore.) Roundup, and at 17 years old, she rode at Madison Square Garden in New York City. After retirement from full-time work on the road, she made trick roping appearances at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and in Italy for the famous clothing designer Giorgio Armani.
She also spent a lot of time visiting children’s wards at hospitals as she traveled along the rodeo road. At the time of her induction, Sheppard was the only woman to perfect standing on the back of a running horse while spinning two ropes. Throughout the 1950s, she served as the representative for the contract acts to the Rodeo Cowboys Association.

At the end of almost two weeks of competition, the 2026 NRCHA CINCH Stallion Stakes hosted the second Cow Horse Challenge qualifier for The Run For A Million, giving riders another shot to punch their ticket to one of the sport’s biggest stages.
With high stakes in Las Vegas, five riders stepped up to claim their spot this August at the South Point. Qualifying from the event were Justin Wright of Brock, Texas, Todd Crawford of Blanchard, Oklahoma, Tucker Robinson of Shandon, California, Chris Dawson of Perrin, Texas, and Erin Taormino of Lipan, Texas.
“I feel very humble and grateful for the opportunity to go back and be a part of The Run For A Million,” Justin Wright shared, who was the champion of the

Herren, a 20-time qualifier for the National Finals Steer Roping and average winner, now is a national champion.
That became a reality when the Pawhuska, Okla., cowboy clocked an 8.7-second run to win the Final Four sudden-death round Sunday afternoon at the National Circuit Finals Steer Roping at the Goshen County Pavilion.
“I just knew I had to let my hair hangout a little bit,” said Herren, 46, who was the second cowboy out in the finals. “That run (8.7 seconds) felt like they were going to. Have to get it on to get (past
Jess Pope capitalized on a championship-caliber draw at the PRCA Extreme Bares & Broncs in Watford City, N.D., delivering a 93-point ride aboard Brookman Rodeo’s Lunatic Heaven to set an arena record and secure the title at the Rank 45 Xtreme Broncs Series event.
The matchup alone was enough to capture Pope’s attention.
“I was super excited,” Pope said. “It didn’t even really dawn on me that she was going to be up there until they did the introductions last night. They did an introduction for her running into the arena, and the dark house put a spotlight on her. So automatically, I’m like, ‘Oh crap, she is here. This is pretty cool.’”
Stetson Wright has faced a couple in 2026, one of which was Legacy Pro Rodeo’s Ain’t No Joke during Wednesday’s championship round of the Clovis (Calif.) Rodeo Xtreme Bulls, part of the Rank 45 Xtreme Bulls Series.
“Ain’t No Joke of Legacy has knocked me out really bad in the rodeo (last year),” said Wright, a 10-time PRCA World Champion from Beaver, Utah. “It’s probably one of my worst knockouts ever, and I was like, ‘They’re just trying to kill me tonight.’
“Of course, I knew that if I did things right as bucky as Ain’t No Joke is, I could easily win. I also knew it was going to be hard to get the whistle on him.”
Vengeance came with a 93-point ride to win the short round and the average, leaving the arena with $12,967, which propelled him back to the top spot in the PRCA.
It was a banner night for one of the most well-recognized names in PRORODEO and a cowboy looking to make a splash this season at Battle Born Broncs in Fallon, Nev., part of the Rank 45 Xtreme Broncs Series.
Coming off a hot start to his season that has made him the No. 2 saddle bronc rider in the PRCA | Bill Fick Ford World Standings, Rusty Wright’s 90.5-point ride on Corey & Lange Rodeo’s Cypress Toddy set a new arena record at the Rafter 3C Arena. Meanwhile, in the bareback riding, Myles Carlson picked up the biggest win of his career with an 87-point ride on Burch Rodeo’s Lyin Hostage.
Before Rusty Wright’s section, his brother, Stetson Wright, was tied for the lead in the saddle bronc riding with an 88.5-point ride. Stetson Wright currently leads the world in the saddle bronc, just a few thousand dollars ahead of his brother. By the time the final section came to an end, four cowboys had marked a score of 88.5 points, but Rusty rose to the top for the win.
There is plenty of competition with the Wright brothers, but they’re also each other’s biggest fans and supporters.
“You’re only as good as your competition,” Rusty Wright said. “When they are there, riding against me, I feel like there’s nothing better than that.”
Rusty Wright knew before his ride in the final section was even over that he was headed for a win.
“I knew by about the fourth jump that if I finished the way it started, I was going to be winning it,” he said. “When I looked back to the chutes, I saw my brothers all pumped up and cheering, and I was 100% sure I had won.”
Shad Mayfield, the 2020 PRCA Tie-Down Roping World Champion and 2024 PRCA All-Around World Champion, has had a busy offseason – on the operating table.
Mayfield, a native of Clovis, N.M., had surgery on his left hip on Dec. 18, and then on March 26 he had surgery on his right hip.
“I did my left hip first, and that was because that was the worst hip. It was a lot bigger surgery on it, and then I did my right hip,” said Mayfield, 25. “My right hip wasn’t near as bad, so they just kind of went in there and cleaned it up and repaired stuff.”
Mayfield, a seven-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo – 2019-2025 – is not ready to shut down his 2026 season just yet.
“The plan is to be back at Calgary,” said Mayfield who is going to be on crutches for three more weeks. “That’s what we’re working on. I go to PT (physical therapy) five days a week. I have one of the best physical therapists out there. The only time I take off is weekends. We alternate hips. I work on one hip one day and the other hip the next day. If I stay in PT and stay true to all that and just stay healthy, then I told him, let’s plan on me being back at Calgary. That’s the goal. I feel like if I can get back at Calgary and have success there and then roll on, I have a big chance of making the NFR.”
The 2026 Calgary Stampede runs from July 3-12.
A year ago, Mayfield finished second in the PRCA | Bill Fick Ford World Standings in tie-down roping with $388,931.
Chase Webster made a statement at the Clovis (Calif.) Rodeo April 24-26, as the 22-year-old cowboy beat out several Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifiers to claim the aggregate title with a time of 47.2 seconds on four head.
Webster, who entered Clovis with less than $10,000 in earnings on the season, won Round 2 with a 9.5-second run, then followed it up with another 9.5-second in Round 3. The two times helped him advanced to the finals with a commanding lead of 30.4 seconds on three head – nearly 17 seconds ahead of second place.
“It was harder for people here because it rained so much, and the mud was a huge part of it,” said Webster, who hails from Kamas, Utah. “I drew well, so that helped a lot.”
Webster’s stretch of good runs hit a snag in the final round, as he was late and resorted to fundamentals rather than speed.
“I just wanted to make sure I caught my calf,” Webster said. “That mud was deep, and whenever I got to her, I sank down in the mud a little bit, and then the calf ran. At that point, I just knew I needed to tie her down to get something in the average.”
Webster threw his hands up at 16.8 seconds, narrowly hanging on to the top spot over King Pickett, who finished second in the average with 47.4 seconds on four head.
Riley O’Rourke was on the brink of etching his name in the PRORODEO history books in 2025 – forever.
He just missed becoming the first cowboy to capture a PRCA Steer Roping World Championship in his Resistol Rookie Year, finishing $9,269 behind Cole Patterson.
The 21-year-old put himself in position to claim a gold buckle, thanks to a consistent season that saw him collect wins at the Yuma (Ariz.) Silver Spur Rodeo and Days of ‘76 Landmark Stand Alone Steer Roping in Deadwood, S.D.
He proceeded to run away with Resistol Rookie of the Year honors in steer roping and the all-around. And at the National Finals Steer Roping in Mulvane, Kan., the Skiatook, Okla., cowboy was solid earning $54,134, the second most of any contestant.
Now, with a year of experience under his belt, O’Rourke hopes to take the next step, and falling short of winning a gold buckle has added fuel to his fire.
“It’s one of those deals where I’m never okay with losing,” O’Rourke said. “I feel like I didn’t really lose, I more or less just got beat. At the time, I did what I had to do but (Cole Patterson) was just better in Round 10 and over that weekend (at NFSR). But I’d just like the roles to be reversed.”
O’Rourke made a run at the NFSR and put himself in position to win the world, entering Round 10 at the Kansas Star Arena. But he didn’t control his own destiny.

(April 24) – Earlier this week, the PRCA Board of Directors and the ProRodeo Hall of Fame Trustees held a joint meeting to review the next step with Cheyenne LEADS and voted in favor of moving forward.
This step follows the January signing of a non-binding memorandum of understanding to explore relocating the PRCA offices and the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy to Cheyenne, Wyo.
This morning, Cheyenne
LEADS, the PRCA Board of Directors and the Hall of Fame Trustees formalized the partnership with the signing of a Development Agreement between the parties on the project. The target for completion is still early 2029 and additional timeline details are being formed.
“As the PRCA celebrates our 90th year as the premier sanctioning body in Western sports, this is an exciting evolution that will give our membership the best chance at success for the
next 50 years,” PRCA CEO Tom Glause said.
Over the last three months, the Wyoming State Legislature, Cheyenne City Officials and Cheyenne LEADS have continued to codify funding for the project. The Wyoming legislative approval allowed the parties to move into the next phase of discussions.
In addition, this milestone allows project partners to begin pursuing additional fundraising efforts to support the overall development of the Hitching Post District.

Virtually all horses are exposed to the EHV1 virus at a young age, which guides the way we respond to an outbreak
Many horse owners become acutely aware of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV) when there’s an outbreak or a reported positive test in your local community. The reality is that EHV is a permanent part of the equine environment – not just at horse shows, but across the population.
Virtually all horses are exposed to the EHV-1 virus at a young age, and the virus hides out (is “latent”) in most horses without causing symptoms. The virus is
intermittently shed from healthy horses into the environment, particularly in times of stress, and this is how horses around them end up getting exposed to higher levels of the virus and develop symptoms. This is also the reason that you may see small outbreaks at unrelated facilities – those horses didn’t necessarily catch the virus from each other or from a shared human contact; they may have experienced a stress response and become sick without exposure to another horse, or may have encountered a high viral shedder on property.
Similar to human diseases like COVID or the flu, equine infectious diseases can’t be 100% prevented. To help our community coexist with equine infectious diseases, USEF has successfully developed biosecurity protocols to accomplish the following: Prevent potential introduction of infectious disease pathogens
Healthy horse entry protocols and vaccine requirements
Identify cases of infections disease early
Mandatory reporting of febrile horses (temperatures over 101.5F)
Isolate potential infectious disease cases
Mandatory submission of isolation plans which identify isolation areas for clinical or exposed cases during an outbreak Isolating sick or potentially exposed horses from others is the best way to limit diseases spread Protect horse health and allow safe continuation of competition Enhanced biosecurity to allow healthy horses to compete Assistance with developing and implementing biosecurity protocols for competition facilities is available to all USEF competition organizers.
If an infectious disease outbreak does occur, USEF works with the competition organizer and state animal health officials to assist with any contact tracing and advise on the risk assessment and epidemiological investigation that state animal health authorities conduct. This includes an assessment of population demographics, contact rates, environmental conditions, laboratory findings, and the venue/horse management. Decisions about whether a
show goes forward are usually reached together based on this assessment, with all three groups conferring about whether the event can continue with unexposed horses safely participating. Competition organizers are free to cancel an event at any time if desired.
In the last three years, USEF has worked with organizers, state veterinarians, and competition veterinarians to successfully manage several infectious diseases occurrences on competition grounds while allowing the shows to continue. Two USEF shows had state quarantines on a group of horses on the show grounds and continued the show with no additional horses becoming sick.
Our biosecurity protocols are backed by peer-reviewed science and years of experience to separate and protect unexposed horses from illness, but we need members’ help in keeping those practices top of mind. USEF will continue to focus efforts to ensure horse health and biosecurity are a priority and ask your help in doing the same.
A milestone moment unfolded at the 2026 NRCHA CINCH Stallion Stakes as Matt Koch officially surpassed the $2 million mark in National Reined Cow Horse Association earnings, joining only seven other NRCHA Professionals who’ve achieved this impressive accomplishment.

Fort Worth, TX (March 30, 2026) – PBR Teams today announced plans for its second wave of expansion, with the league intending to grow from 10 to 12 teams for the 2027 season. The expansion, approved unanimously by PBR Teams owners, marks a significant milestone in the league’s continued evolution and underscores the strength of its business model, competitive product, and fan engagement.
PBR Teams launched in 2022 with eight teams playing five-onfive bull riding games, leading to an annual championship. In its first wave of expansion, the league expanded to 10 teams ahead of the 2024 season.

The event will feature the top 24 women’s rodeo athletes

Total added money surpasses $300,000 with expanded divisions across all levels
The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) has announced a significant expansion to the 2026 NRHA Derby 4-YearOld Stakes, adding $150,000 in new added money to the program. With this increase, total added money for the 4-Year-Old Stakes now exceeds $300,000. Previously limited to the Level 4 Open and Level 4 Non Pro divisions, the Stakes will expand in 2026 to include Levels 1, 2, and 3 in both Open and Non Pro competition.

Prior to that, he served for 30 years as the director of the equine program at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas, where he coached the horse judging team that won 165 national/world champion or reserve champion titles; and supervised the equestrian and ranch horse teams that won more than 60 national champion or reserve champion titles.
