As the developer of Racehorse Strength Equi-Block® and LaKOTA®, one of Canada’s top joint supplement and topical pain relief brands, as well as the co-developer of Magic Cushion®, SLIDE™ founder Rick Stewart knows a thing or two about combating joint pain. “I grew up in horse racing. We had one of the top standardbred racing stables in California and western Canada”, he states. Being in the racehorse business Stewart has dealt with his share of joint, ligament, tendon, hoof and back problems in his horses.

According to Stewart, feeding 200 mg a day of hyaluronic acid didn’t produce any noticeable benefits in his horses; neither did 500 mg or even 1,000 mg of hyaluronic acid daily. “It wasn’t until I starting feeding my horses 2,500 mg of hyaluronic acid a day that I began to see some pretty decent results”, he says. “I finally settled on 2,500 mg of hyaluronic acid twice a day for a total of 5,000 mg

daily and I’ve been feeding those dosages to my horses for three decades now. I put all my young horses on SLIDE™ and I’ve never had any of them develop joint problems as they got older. And it seems to stop degeneration of cartilage in horses with existing joint problems as they all improve on SLIDE™. Stewart says that the majority of equine joint supplements on the market today with hylauronic acid are mainly glucosamine based with very small amounts of hyaluronic acid added for marketing purposes. “Hyaluronic acid at the doses that SLIDE™ provides absolutely works. The New AQHA 2025-2026 AQHA Executive Committee

The 2025-2026 American Quarter Horse Association Executive Committee was elected March 31 during the AQHA Convention in Las Vegas. Though AQHA operates primarily upon the decisions of its members through the board of directors, the five-person Executive Committee is responsible for implementing important decisions and governing AQHA between the annual meetings of the membership and the board. The Executive Committee convenes throughout the year to conduct and manage the business of AQHA. The AQHA Executive Committee – consisting of a president, first vice president, second vice president and two additional members – is elected each year by the board at the Convention. Each member serves a term of one year until the selection of his/her successor. Members are eligible for re-election and may serve on the Executive Committee for up to five years.

Brinkman is an AQHA Professional Horseman and showed the first-ever AQHA Superhorse, Vickie Lee Pine, for grandfather and owner Howard Pitzer. Brinkman works to continue the traditions of honesty and integrity that built his family’s operation over 75 years ago.

Lori Bucholz of Waterloo, Nebraska, is an AQHA life member and has been an AQHA director since 2008 and was elevated to director-at-large in 2020. ROCKER STEINER WINS BAREBACK AT BATTLE BORN BRONCS

Rocker Steiner has been on a hot streak the back-half of March and into April, and shows no signs of cooling off as he captured yet another bareback championship in Fallon, Nev., Saturday night.

The 21-year-old Weatherford, Texas, cowboy became the first bareback rider to win a second buckle at Battle Born Broncs after delivering an 89-point ride against Sankey Pro Rodeo & Phenom Genetics’ Sozo, a 10-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo bucking horse.

Steiner’s first championship at the Fallon event came in 2022, when he completed an 88-point ride aboard Sankey Pro Rodeo & Phenom Genetics’ Mustard.

“Sankey has some of the best horses in the world and Sozo is one of their best horses,” Steiner said. “It’s super fun to get on. It’s a great pluck, especially when you see it by your name.

Glad to be drawing good and riding good at Fallon.”

Steiner’s style and pure talent, mixed with the familiarity between him and Sozo, helped him succeed Saturday

night. He last matched up with her in 2023 at the Magic Valley Stampede in Filer, Idaho. Steiner delivered an 88.5-point ride to win.

Saturday’s payout of $6,339 added to Steiner’s season earnings, which have increased drastically the last three weeks with $71,000 in total earnings at RodeoHouston, $4,804 at Rodeo Austin and another $100,000 at The American Rodeo by Teton Ridge in April. It also helped him continue to climb near the top of the PRCA | Bill Fick Ford World Standings, where he finished the 2024 regular season.

“I started my year off pretty bad,” Steiner said. “I didn’t do any good at Fort Worth (Texas) or San Antonio. I had to heal up and show everybody that I’m still relevant.”

In saddle bronc, Sage Newman and Darcy Radel tied in the championship round with 88.5-point rides. Newman was aboard Burch Rodeo’s Lunatic Nation, while Radel matched up up against Sankey Pro Rodeo & Phenom Genetics’ The Black Tie. Both cowboys earned $5,620 and a share of the title.

While it might seem simple to credit Taylor Sheridan and his Yellowstone universe for the increased interest in Western culture and rodeo, it’s certainly a place to start the conversation.

The show premiered in 2018, spawning two currently airing spinoffs and a third that is still in production.

Even though it’s a fictional story, the drama has been credited for shining a fairly authentic and accurate light on ranch life and the American West, providing a glimpse into the experience.

“There is that Yellowstone effect. People talk about it, and it is real,” said Teton Ridge CEO Deidre Lester. “As someone who comes from the East Coast, everyone was watching that series and it shined a light back on ranch life, the middle of America that you don’t always see highlighted in Hollywood movies and televisions shows. So, that definitely drew a lot of interest from sort of a casual, what we call, ‘the cowboy curious’ audience.”

Seeing the action unfold on a screen is one thing. Experiencing it is another.

“Sadly, the pandemic was awful, but it also woke people up to wanting to be outside, wanting to be outdoors, experiencing getting back to being out in the world,” Lester continued. “And I think rodeo is a great representation of that. I do think that rodeo also hung in there during the pandemic. There were some changes that had to happen to accommodate what was going on in Las Vegas, I know, but at the same time rodeo marched on and I think that was important as well. And I think that that drew a lot of people in that maybe were reconnecting with the sport.”

John Travolta sparked a craze in the 1980s. In the 1990s, it was almost impossible to go a day without hearing “Friends in Low Places” on the radio. Today’s popularity push is credited to a catalog of shows about the Dutton family, both now and in the past.

Longstanding and loyal fans have always been there when it comes to PRORODEO. Lately, they’re being joined by a plethora of new faces.

Attendance records at numerous events, both big and small, have been reset in the last several years. Additionally, viewership of The Cowboy Channel, the rodeo and western-specific cable network and streaming service, has seen significant upticks. In 2023, the network saw a 64 percent increase in viewership compared to 2022 during its annual “100 Rodeos in 100 Days” event.

It’s a pattern that shows passion for the western way of life continues to be on the rise. But why? And more importantly, what’s next?

But Houston has become more than just a rodeo. It’s become a spectacle, and a great one at that. Nightly concerts for more than 70,000 fans all packed into the Houston Texans’ NRG Stadium has further increased the excitement for rodeo – or at the very least putting more money and eyes onto it.

But Houston isn’t alone in providing cowboys with huge rodeo pay days. The state of Utah has become a gold mine for potential NFR qualifiers.

Every July the State of Utah celebrates Pioneer Week the third week of July with the culmination of the celebration being July 24, marking the day when Brigham Young and a determined company of Mormon pioneers realized their dreams upon entering the Great Salt Valley. Rodeo has long played a part during this celebration with the Utah Days of ‘47 Rodeo, the Spanish Fork Fiesta Days Rodeo and the Ogden Pioneer Days all being contested during this time.

In 2023, these three PRCA rodeos joined together to offer nearly $2 million in payouts– all happening within a 5-day span and within a 100-miles of each other. In addition to these record payouts during Pioneer Week in Utah, there was an additional bonus of $15,000 for the top earning female and male athlete each across these three rodeos.

This program continued in 2024 with barrel racer Kassie Mowry leading the way on the female side winning an astonishing $37,172 at the three Utah rodeos during that week and Marty Yates was the top male performing athlete with $29,786.

RODEO RISING: PRORODEO REACHING NEW AUDIENCES

Money talks

Money may grow on trees. But for many PRCA rodeos, it’s made on the backs of stock, more frequently in large arenas.

RodeoHouston, the top regular season rodeo in the PRCA, concluded March 23 after paying out more than $2.5 million in earnings. Winning contestants walked away with a record $65,000, which all counts in the PRCA | Bill Fick Ford World Standings.

The rodeo has become a must-compete event for athletes, with winnings that large helping them qualify for the coveted 2025 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge in Las Vegas.

Reaching a wider audience

Whether playing at home or away, on any given weekend, an NFL fan can turn on a channel and find their favorite team. Same for most college programs or major professional sports leagues.

But for rodeo fans, keeping track of the cowboys and cowgirls they saw compete in their community could be difficult. In the past, once they left town, the only way to monitor their exploits was through written or online coverage of events across the country.

The Cowboy Channel changed that.

Established in 2017 on the vision of the late Patrick Gottsch, The Cowboy Channel sought to make western sports and lifestyle coverage mainstream. In less than a decade, it has transformed the rodeo experience, turning an often-isolated sport into an easy-tofollow year-round competition playing 24/7.

And that expansion, already at a rapid pace, shows little signs of slowing.

“I think rodeo has the potential to grow huge because of media.

As we’ve seen, The Cowboy Channel started a wonderful thing and now it’s our time to help expand that past the starting point,” said Leon Vick, Vice President of Rodeo, Horse and Livestock Operations at the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver.

“You know, everybody has a starting point but then it’s your job to take that a little bit further. Media, I don’t want to say it’s the last frontier, but it’s our next frontier. I think rodeo has a lot of growth room.”

Weeks prior to the 2024 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, it was announced that Teton Ridge, a collection of companies that focus solely on western lifestyle and entertainment, had acquired The Cowboy Channel and all properties with Rural Media Group.

The goal has been simple – bring rodeo to the widest audience possible. That dream continues to become reality.

“I think first and foremost, with the acquisition of The Cowboy Channel, my vision is to get The Cowboy Channel in every home in America,” Lester said. “It’s currently distributed in 25 million homes via satellite TV primarily and there’s an opportunity to really take a fresh look at the distribution both linear but also the (over-the-top) and streaming apps and just make it more available to people. And then we’re also looking at investing in the top rodeos that draw the largest audience and the biggest star power from an athlete’s perspective for money prizes.”

The format shift

Creating something that’s easy to understand was always Rorey Lemmel’s goal.

As General Manager of the Governor’s Cup, Lemmel drew on his own experience as a rodeo competitor when helping build the format for how the Cinch Playoffs would shape PRORODEO’s regular season finish.

“From a former contestant, we always thought rodeo needed to be on a bigger stage and to be set up to be fan friendly,” Lemmel said. “Not everybody understands the cowboy way of multiple performances, and multiple times and town in-and-out. But this is an event where people can understand it. A winner each night and the best guys in the world. Essentially, I wanted to bring the NFC/AFC championships somewhere and luckily, I had a governor (in South Dakota) who believed in it.”

Established in 2023, the regular season-culminating event brings together the top four finishers from the Cinch Playoffs at the Puyallup (Wash.) Rodeo along with the top eight from each event in the PRCA Playoff Series Standings.

The addition of the Cinch Playoffs has reshaped the approach to competition and who has the potential to occupy the top spots going into Las Vegas.

The Governor’s Cup in Sioux Falls, S.D., features a $1.3 million purse that has the potential to take a middle-of-the-pack competitor and turn them into a bonafide contender overnight.

NFR will always be the goal, but a visit to the Cinch Playoffs has become nearly a required steppingstone to get there. Of the 96 Cinch Playoff qualifiers in 2024, 82 went on to compete at NFR. “Obviously, I don’t know that anybody can duplicate the NFR experience, but I’ve been to that rodeo too. The Governor’s Cup is just a hands down very well run production,” longtime team roper Kollin VonAhn said after he and teammate Andrew Ward won the event last September. “Honestly, I’m at the age now where I’m grateful for the opportunities that I get, and I was just glad to be there and experience it. But it was a first-class event, just unbelievable. If you never got to go to the NFR but you got to go to the Governor’s Cup, you got a pretty damn good taste of what some of the best rodeo in the world is like.”

What happens in Sioux Falls during the final week of the regular season is a reflection of how the entire sport has changed in recent years. While there are still plenty of rodeos who follow the traditional format of a single go or multiple goes with an average championship, many of the bigger events have pivoted to tournament style brackets where competitors must do well enough in initial rounds for the opportunity to keep competing.

These changes have made it easier for fans to track who is still alive and who is in the running for a championship.

It’s also made things a bit more lucrative.

“What’s really important and really helped drive the sponsorships is if you look around at all the rodeos that are growing, one it’s either a new facility and or it is the format change,” Vick said. “I know the contestants don’t like to embrace the format changes that have happened, but they have to stop and look at the correlation between format change and the payout.”

The numbers game

To be fair, Vick has lined up behind the barrier.

A former steer wrestler who qualified for a pair of NFRs over the course of his two-decade career, the Colorado native knows what it takes to be among the best in PRORODEO. Albeit his run was at a slightly different point in history.

Not that long ago, a rodeo competitor had a good shot at securing a qualifying spot at NFR with around $50,000 in earnings over the course of an entire season. Now, there are opportunities to earn that same amount from one rodeo in a span of days.

“I come out of the rodeo world. I won Cheyenne. I won Houston.

I won under $15,000 at both of those rodeos when I won them.

Which, hey, I’m not knocking them. That was a lot of money, and it still is,” Vick said. “But today, you end up winning those rodeos and you’re going to leave with $50,000. What’s the big change? Format.”

Tournament style brackets. The Cinch Playoffs. Increased attention to the sport itself. All of it has added up to make rodeo a more compelling draw for fans and sponsors. Ticket sales continue to rise and brand deals with both traditional and new advertisers have altered the landscape. The result – staggering numbers that would have been hard to imagine just a few years ago.

In 2024, every NFR qualifier in bareback riding, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding had cleared more than $100,000 in earnings before the Finals started, while nine of the 15 steer wrestlers had reached the benchmark.

In fact, going into NFR last December, 22 total competitors had already eclipsed $200,000 in earnings that season. By comparison, a decade earlier, 10 competitors needed NFR success to finish 2014 with more than $200,000 in total earnings for the season.

“I think I won $50,000 (in 2023), but it was kind of an eye-opener for me of how rodeo had changed,” VonAhn said after returning to the PRCA full-time last season. “About 2015, right in there, it would take mid-$60,000 to make the NFR. Fast-forward, now it’s taking over $100,000. Well, that’s a big difference. It dawned on me that you’ve got to have big opportunities on big stages if you think you’re just going to make the Finals.”

Bigger payouts. Larger crowds. More media exposure. Increased awareness. PRORODEO’s continued growth is rapid and ongoing.

While there are plenty of advancements to navigate, the sport’s foundation remains unchanged. At its core, it is still reliant on a cowboy or cowgirl nodding their head, aiming for that perfect run or ride.

But with more eyes watching and money invested, the reach of the western lifestyle is only getting bigger. And that’s a situation everyone is excited about.

“The thing I saw was that there really is a very large and very loyal fan base here, and that the athletes are truly some of the best remarkable athletes in the world or sports. And it’s just not necessarily been given the mainstream sports media attention that it deserves,” Lester said. “To me, there’s just a big opportunity here to put rodeo on a bigger stage with a national broadcast, to showcase the stars of the sport. And it’s also a space that really has been overlooked by major marketing and brand advertisers with a community of fans that are as loyal as almost anything I’ve seen anywhere else.

“So, I just think there’s a lot of room for growth here and so we’re looking forward to pushing it forward.”

RodeoHouston Crowns Champions

Three months have passed since Kassie Mowry was crowned the 2024 WPRA World Champion barrel racer, her first, edging out four-time world champion Hailey Kinsel for the title. On Sunday afternoon (March 23) inside NRG Stadium for the final round of RodeoHouston it was this duo once again battling it out for the top spot.

Kinsel aboard Sister ran first in the four-woman finals setting the bar with a 14.52 second run, while Mowry and 2024 Horse of the Year Force The Goodbye “Jarvis” was last out. Jarvis would have to lay down a faster time than he had

in the preliminary round that day as the duo finished fourth in that round in a time of 14.70 to advance to the Finals. Jarvis, who was celebrating his 7th birthday, rose to the occasion and stopped the clock in 14.50 seconds to secure his jockey her second RodeoHouston title, her first coming in 2017.

stated Mowry in the winner’s circle. “He seems to always know when I need him the most. It was great to finally nail the first barrel as that had been a struggle for us here, so I was super proud of him for that. He always runs as hard as he can, and I am just so thankful for him.”

With the win, Mowry added $73,000 to her 2025 earnings to shoot to the top of the WPRA World Standings surpassing the $100,000 mark with $107,427.

She will remain in the driver’s seat for the foreseeable future as her next closest competitor is Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi with $57,295.

Pozzi Tonozzi Pozzi Tonozzi riding a horse, called Bobby, shipped in from Australia, finished third in Houston stopping the clock in 14.59 seconds. Competing in her first RodeoHouston finals was Acey Pinkston who would finish fourth in a time of 14.79 seconds. Pinkston, the daughter of Liz Pinkston, is ranked 10th with $29,351.

On the roping end it was none other than Taylor Munsell capturing her first RodeoHouston title after stopping the clock in 2.7 seconds. She edged Bradi Good, who was the first gunner out in the finals setting the bar at 2.8 seconds.

Munsell has qualified for the last four Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping with the hopes of taking home the title but so far it has eluded her but with a big win in Houston it might just be the key to capturing that world title in 2025.

She leads the world standings with $88,650, with Joey Williams second having collected $50,484 thus far.

“Bradi (Good) definitely put the pressure on me, and I am just thankful my horse helped get me to the spot to get the rope on and stop the clock,” stated Munsell, who won $70,125 in Houston.

When asked if this win will change her strategy for the rest of the season, Munsell simply stated, “I love to rodeo so will plan to go to the rodeos I like to go to, but it will be nice having a cushion while doing that.”

at the Cactus Classic, you qualified for The Run For A Million Event. Can you tell us about that experience and how it made you feel?

A - Qualifying for The

Run For A Million was a professional goal of mine.

With the class being an Open class, open for any age horse, the best of the best show up. The horse I qualified on is owned by my wife and I; he is 5 years old this year. I felt like he matured a lot over the winter and was ready to compete at that level. Qualifying on a horse my wife and I raised and own is super special.

I was a little worried about being an early draw. I knew I needed to push him and try and make people chase my score. He was great! He was honest and was with me through the entire run. At the end of my last maneuver I got goosebumps, I knew it was a going to be enough to get us qualified.

She pushes me out of my comfort zone and to be the best version of me. She is definitely my number one fan and supporter. Having that kind of partner is invaluable.

Q - How will you prepare for TRFAM?

A - After the Cactus I

showed Lucifer at the NRBC. He was really good there and we won the Level 3.

I don’t want to over show him this year leading up to TRFAM, so now he will have a little time off. We will keep him legged up over the next couple months, and I will take him to a show to school him the end of July before heading to TRFAM.

Q - The horse you qualified

on, Savage Love is pretty special. Can you tell details about this horse’s cool back story?

A - Savage Love, or “Lucifer”

as we call him, was raised by my wife and me. We also raised and still own his mother, Miss Whizzletown. I trained her, and Jenny and I both showed her. She was a phenomenal show horse, great minded. I see a lot of his mother in him. The year he was born Jenny was watching a series on Netflix call Lucifer. He was (and still is) a very good-looking horse, so Jenny decided to call him Lucifer because he is a handsome devil.

Q - Jenny, your wife, is a huge source of support and help. How

does a partner like that help you to succeed in the show pen and everyday life?

A - The success I have had has definitely been a team effort.

We are very fortunate to work well together, and even when we worked for other people, we worked together. We have the same eye for the type of horses we like. I am lucking that Jenny shares the same passion and drive for success that I do. She is always

Q - What are the top 3 tips you would give someone that wanted to become a serious reining competitor? Professional or amateur.

A - I think being successful as a professional and successful as an amateur are 2 very different things. To be successful as a professional you need to find a feel and style that works for you and stay true and consistent with your program. At the same time, you cannot be afraid to ask for help and take the advice openly.

Success also doesn’t happen overnight. It takes a lot of hard work and long hours. Don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t happen right away.

As a non pro, obviously to be successful you need to put the time in practicing. You also need to find a program that works for you. Find a trainer that has the same goals as you and wants you

J.B. Mauney headlines 2025 Class of Heroes & Legends inductees including the late Roy Cooper

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The PBR (Professional Bull Riders) today announced the 2025 class of Heroes & Legends inductees, marking the sport’s 27th Hall of Fame class and third group of individuals who have had an extraordinary impact on Western sports to be inducted into the PBR Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

The 2025 Heroes & Legends Ceremony, recognized as a preeminent Western sports award ceremony, will be held on Thursday, July 10, prior to the Oklahoma Wildcatters homestand, Wildcatter Days scheduled for July 11-13 at nearby Paycom Center. The Wildcatters are one of 10 teams that compete in the groundbreaking PBR Teams league which transforms bull riding from an individual sport into team competition.

Two-time PBR World Champion and Oklahoma Wildcatters Head Coach J.B. Mauney will receive the coveted Ring of Honor, regarded as the highest honor for a professional bull rider following their retirement from competition. The Ring of Honor is presented to individuals who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the sport of bull riding, based on the core beliefs of the organization, including authenticity, toughness, respect, teamwork, and professionalism.

Considered by many as the greatest of all time, Mauney, a name synonymous with reROY COOPER silience, grit and freakish natural talent in the world of professional bull riding, won the PBR World Championship in 2013 and 2015, and recorded 538 qualified premier series rides in his career, second all-time in PBR, including 75 90-point rides. In 2009, he became the first rider to record a qualified ride on all eight of his bulls at the PBR World Finals.

Known as “The Dragon Slayer” for consistently choosing the most difficult bulls, the North Carolina cowboy famously ended Bushwacker’s then record streak of 42 consecutive buck offs in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2013.

Mauney is the highest-earning Western sports athlete in history.

His career earnings in PBR totaled $7,419,474.90. Mauney’s 18year professional career ended following a neck injury in 2023.

In 2024, Mauney began a new phase of his career, tapped to lead the Oklahoma Wildcatters as Head Coach. During the team’s inaugural season, they went 11-16-1 to conclude the regular-season No. 8 in the league.

The late, legendary roper Roy Cooper will be honored with the Ty Murray Top Hand Award, posthumously. Created in 2018, this honor is given annually to individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to enhance the sport of rodeo.

Known by many as “Super Looper,” Cooper, who overcame severe asthma as a child to pursue a career in Western Sports, put 44

the rodeo world on notice in his first season in 1976, winning the Resistol Rookie of the Year, Tie-Dow Roping National Finals Rodeo Average Championship and Tie-Down Roping World Championship.

During his 37-season career, Cooper won eight PRCA World Championships, including six titles in tie-down roping and one in steer roping, along with an all-around World Championship, in addition to making 19 appearances at the National Finals Rodeo in tie-down roping and 13 in steer roping. In 2000, Cooper became the first cowboy in PRCA history to surpass $2 million in career earnings.

Warren G. “Freckles” Brown will receive the Ring of Honor posthumously. A prolific rodeo competitor in the mid-1900s, Brown made history in 1962 when he won RCA bull riding world title at the age of 41, becoming the oldest athlete in the organization’s history to win a riding-event championship. Brown’s career was briefly put on pause when he travelled overseas to serve the United States military during World War II, first enlisting in the Army before being recruited to the CIA. Despite suffering numerous critical injuries following his return to competition, including a brief period of paralysis in 1962 that required an emergency surgery and a 34-day stint in traction, in addition to his world title, Brown won the National Finals Rodeo average in 1967. During the 1967 National Finals Rodeo Brown delivered one of the most well-remembered moments in rodeo, becoming the first rider to cover the bull Tornado out of more than 200 who had previously attempted him.

The prestigious Brand of Honor will be presented to World Champion Bull Big Bucks. The PBR Brand of Honor, created in 2011, is the highest honor a bovine animal athlete can receive. The honor is based on the animal athlete’s display of consistent championship caliber performances and career statistical records.| Big Bucks etched his name in the PBR records books in 2005 when he was crowned World Champion, besting the likes of World Champions Adriano Moraes, Chris Shivers, Troy Dunn and Justin McBride en route to winning the title at the age of four. Big Bucks made his PBR debut in February 2004 and was a consistent force on tour until he retired at the conclusion of the 2008 PBR World Finals. Dylan Grant dies from Induries

The PRCA would like to send its thoughts and prayers to bull rider Dylan Grant’s family, friends and the entire rodeo/bull riding community after Grant passed away after suffering injuries Thursday night during the Wharton County Youth Fair Xtreme Bulls event in Wharton, Texas. Grant was 24.

Grant sustained an injury in the second round at the Wharton County event after being bucked off by a bull in the arena.

Medics rushed him into an ambulance where they began working to stabilize him. He was then taken by helicopter to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas, where he passed away.

Grant first obtained his PRCA permit on May 1, 2018, and then bought his PRCA card on Feb. 14, 2024. He has competed in multiple PRORODEO and Xtreme Bulls events throughout his career.

This season Grant had $3,760 in earnings and $15,710 in his career.

In 2021, while also competing for the University of Wyoming rodeo team, he won the bull riding title at the Mountain States Circuit Finals Rodeo with 169.5 points on two head. He won Round 3 at the MSCFR in Loveland, Colo., that year with an 86.5-point ride on The Cervi Brothers’ Classic Equine Bad Memory.

Del Mar Increases Purses for 2025; $15.7 Million in 300 Races

Del Mar is planning across-the-board increases to its overnight purse schedule from its top allowance offerings all the way down to the maiden-claiming ranks for its upcoming summer racing season that kicks off on Friday, July 18.

This will be summer #86 in the storied history of the America’s only seaside racing headquarters and it will be conducted for 31 days over eight weeks going forward to Sunday, September 7.

All told Del Mar will present approximately 300 races with overnight purses projected to be $15.7 million. That represents a blended increase of 8% over 2024’s purses.

Additionally, the track will offer 38 stakes races valued at $7,825,000. Once again the highlight of that schedule will be the $1,000,000 Pacific Classic, a mile and one-quarter test that will be run as part of a sparkling five graded stakes card on Saturday, August 30.

Notable in the overnight purse increases is the fact that the vast majority of the track’s owners and trainers will be able to run in maiden special weight dirt races -- both open and Cal-Bred -- for purses of $100,000. The track again will be offering its Maiden Dirt Bonus that provides a 25% increase to non-winner races at the $62,500 level and above, meaning those conditioners with fewer than 100 horses on the Southern California circuit will be competing in those straight maiden affairs for more than six-figure prizes for their horses.

Alarming honeybee colony losses across US increase

The economic impact is estimated to surpass $600 million in honey production, pollination income, and costs to replace colonies

Earlier this year, a nationwide survey of beekeepers revealed “catastrophic” losses in honeybee colonies throughout the United States.1 Newly analyzed data has recently confirmed these losses, with commercial beekeepers reportedly losing an average of 62% of their colonies, amounting to the loss of 1.6 million colonies between June 2024 and March 2025.2 The survey, conducted by Project Apis m., a nonprofit that supports honeybee and beekeeping community research, gathered data from 842 beekeepers, representing approximately 1.956 million colonies. These survey participants account for about 72% of bees in the country.

Causes of these high losses in honeybees remain unknown, but the economic impact of the 1.6 million colonies lost is estimated to surpass $600 million in honey production, pollination income, and costs to replace colonies. “Collectively, these economic and biological hurdles will likely make it impossible for beekeepers to rebuild, pollinate, and produce a honey crop this year, which could have continued impacts on beekeeping operations and our nation’s produce supply,” wrote the Honey Bee Coalition in a news release.

According to the coalition, the full impact of honeybee shortages on pollinated crops, including almonds, apples, cherries, blueberries, melons, and pumpkins, and many others, is yet to be 50

Jerkens also noted that the track will be back to providing its richest “Ship & Win” program again with out-of-state qualifying horses who come to race locally offered a $5,000 bonus just for starting in a dirt race, while turf horses are given a $4,000 up-front bonus. Further, those same horses will earn an additional 50% supplement on top of their purse earnings for running first through fifth on the dirt, while eligible turf horses will receive a 40% bonus.

“In response, USDA Bee Labs were among the first to receive reports of these severe losses. To address the crisis, a multi-organizational working group—including Project Apis m., the American Beekeeping Federation, and the American Honey Producers Association—swiftly mobilized to assess the scale and severity of the losses, collect critical management data, and guide research efforts to identify potential causes,” Downey continued.

Findings from the survey include:

Hobbyist beekeepers, accounting for 1-49 colonies, lost an average of 51% of their colonies Sideliner operations, comprising 50-500 colonies, lost an average of 54% of their colonies.

Commercial beekeepers with more than 500 colonies lost an average of 62% of their colonies, marking a shift from typical patterns where larger operations usually experience fewer losses due to their scale, resources, and skilled management practices Researchers with the US Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS are currently analyzing field samples from 114 colonies in California, both failing and surviving colonies, to investigate causes of the higher colony losses.

Equestrian events and quotas for LA28 Olympic Games

Jumping, Dressage and Eventing – the Olympic equestrian disciplines since 1912 - will be part of the competition at the Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) Olympic Games. The equestrian programme will consist of six medal events: a Team and an Individual medal event in each of the three disciplines. Equestrian retains the 200 quota places it had in Paris in 2024 and the breakdown by discipline remains unchanged, i.e. 75 for Jumping, 60 for Dressage, and 65 for Eventing.

The decision was taken by the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which met today.

“We are extremely pleased with today’s IOC decision,” FEI President Ingmar De Vos said.

“The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games were a historic success for equestrian sport, which proved very popular with the live crowds and TV and online viewers worldwide. It’s a great news that our numbers remain unchanged and we are looking forward to delivering exciting sport at the same level of excellence.”

The qualification systems for the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games were discussed at the recent FEI Sports Forum. The proposals will be put forward for approval by the FEI General Assembly 2025 and will afterwards be provided to the IOC for final review and sign off. Key facts and figures

With three disciplines and 200 quota places, equestrian will be one of the 31 sports on the programme of the LA28 Olympic Games. The six medal equestrian events will be part of the 25 mixed events across all sports and the 351 events overall in LA28.

The LA28 programme maintains the core athlete quota of 10,500 with an extra 698 allocated for the five sports proposed by the LA28 Organising Committee (Baseball/Softball, Cricket, Flag Football, Lacrosse and Squash).

A record breaking 50 nations participated in equestrian at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The number of nations in Paris 2024 was 49. The number of nations competing in equestrian in Los Angeles in 1984 had been 30.

Equestrian sport is the only Olympic sport in which men and women compete as equals from grass roots all the way up to Olympic level.

The event programme for LA28 was developed based on the requests presented by the International Sports Federations to the IOC. The decision from the IOC EB followed the recommendation from the Olympic Programme Commission and the principles approved in 2023: gender equal, globally appealing, cost and complexity conscious, athlete focused.

“Buy Less Dewormer” campaign is launched to raise awareness for less frequent deworming

With the increasing prevalence of anthelmintic resistance, Zoetis has launched an awareness campaign encouraging horse owners to rethink their deworming practices and consider purchasing less deworm-

er. According to Zoetis, the “Buy Less Dewormer” campaign was developed after the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) released updated Internal Parasite Control Guidelines in June 2024.

The goal of the updated 2024 guidelines is to lower the risk of parasitic diseases in

horses and preserve the effectiveness of current deworming medications by delaying anthelmintic resistance. The revised guidelines advise against fixedinterval, year-round deworming.

It also encourages owners to stop blindly rotating anthelmintic classes.

“The true goal of parasite

control in horses is to keep animals healthy and reduce the risk of clinical illness. The goal is NOT to eradicate all parasites from a particular individual. Not only is eradication impossible, the inevitable result of pursuing this goal is accelerated development of parasite drug resistance,” according to the Internal Parasite Control Guidelines.

According to the guidelines, the most the majority of adult horses should be dewormed is twice a year. Veterinarians should also check anthelmintic efficacy routinely via fecal egg count reduction tests. These tests should also be conducted to identify high-shedding horses, requiring additional targeted deworming treatments. However, fecal egg counts should not be used to diagnose diseases in horses given that there is no link between fecal egg counts and disease-causing parasite life stages, according to the AAEP guidelines.

“The industry has seen increasing resistance levels to several parasite treatments, which can be caused, in part, by deworming too often and with active ingredients that do not target the right parasites at the right time,” Nathan Voris, DVM, MBA, director of Equine Technical Services at Zoetis US, said in an organizational release.1 “Our aim with the “Buy Less Dewormer” campaign is to raise awareness around best practices focused on less frequent deworming, and to get horse owners and equine practitioners to reevaluate their current protocols, which for many, are set on autopilot.”

The campaign will also include educational activations with trivia, dewormer giveaways with coupons, and paid print, digital, and social advertisements at the Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event.

2025 NBHA Professional’s Choice Las Vegas Super Show The 2025 NBHA Professional’s Choice Las Vegas Super Show will take place May 29 through June 1, 2025, at the South Point Casino and Equestrian Center, located at 9777 S Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV. This premier barrel racing event features $16,500 in added money, 111 Wild Cards to be awarded across Open, Youth, and Senior divisions, and a $25,000 Future Fortunes Open Bonus. Winners in each 4D division will take home buckles, and five saddle certificates will be awarded to top Open Average D winners. Sanctioned by the West Coast Barrel Racing Association (WCBRA), the event includes triple attendance credit for both the Open and Futurity classes and a WCBRA Average Sidepot payout.

Competition begins with stall check-in on Wednesday, May 28, followed by exhibitions and open arena time on Thursday, May 29.

Open Race 1 kicks off on Friday, May 30, followed by Open Race

2, Youth, and Senior classes on Saturday, May 31. Open Race 3 concludes the weekend on Sunday, June 1, with Cowboy Church in the morning and average awards presented at the event’s conclusion.

The show is open to all contestants, but NBHA membership is required to be eligible for awards. Online entries open January 6, 2025, at 8 AM PST via SaddleBook, and mail-in entries must be postmarked by May 12 to avoid a late fee. Payment plans are available until March 12.

Entry fees vary: $70 for Friday and Sunday Open, $95 for Saturday, and $50 for Youth and Senior classes. A wide variety of sidepots will be offered, including Youth, Senior, Prime, Helmet, Futurity, and Derby options.

All horses must have 12-month negative Coggins and a 30-day health certificate. Stalls are $150 each, including three bags of shavings. Day stalls are $55 per horse per day.

Champions Ride Into Lincoln: CMSA National Championship Set for May 22–25, The Sandhills Global Event Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, is gearing up for four thrilling days of action-packed competition as the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA) brings its National Championship to town from May 22 to May 25, 2025. This premier event promises highspeed horsemanship, sharp shooting, and a celebration of the Western spirit.

Riders from across the country— and beyond—will descend on the Sandhills facility, located at 4100 N 84th St, ready to test their skills in multiple mounted shooting disciplines. With no registration cap and over 120 entries already submitted, anticipation is building fast. Registration opened April 22 and will close May 14, giving competitors a tight window to secure their spot at one of the sport’s biggest showcases.

Competitors and spectators alike can look forward to $5,000

in added money across regular classes, as well as an additional $5,000 in the eliminator round. Specialty categories including cavalry, shotgun, rifle, clean shooter, and overalls will also feature bonus purses, ensuring every ride counts.

The action officially begins on Thursday, May 22, but the facility opens for move-in at 8:00 AM on Wednesday, May 21—no earlier arrivals allowed per event policy. CMSA staff are expected to begin setup on Tuesday, May 20.

Attendees can take advantage of the Fairfield Inn & Suites Lincoln as the official host hotel, with special CMSA rates available for bookings made by May 9. For ease of movement around the expansive grounds, golf cart rentals are also available, though a signed release form is required.

From elite-level competition to a family-friendly atmosphere, the CMSA National Championship in Lincoln promises to be an unforgettable weekend of cowboy tradition and competitive excellence.
