2025 NRCHA Kimes Ranch Derby Champions Crowned

Champions were crowned, memories were made and the 2025 NRCHA Kimes Ranch Derby delivered another unforgettable 11 days of high-caliber cow horse action! This event wouldn’t be possible without the unwavering support of our title sponsor, Kimes Ranch, whose commitment to the sport continues to elevate the Western performance horse industry.

Open Derby Champion

After years of dedication, Jordan Williams finally achieved a long-awaited milestone: his first-ever NRCHA premier event win, riding Tazzy Es Savvy to dominate both the Open Derby and Intermediate Open Derby.

Scoring an impressive 663.5 composite (H: 216.5/R: 222/C: 225), Williams piloted the talented mare, by CR Gotcha Covered, out of Mizz Savannah Taz, by Pepto Taz, to the top of the leaderboard for Bonds Ranch of Saginaw, Texas. The win earned Bonds Ranch nearly $78,500 and secured Williams’ place among the reined cow horse’s elite.

“Honestly, it’s hard for me to even fathom winning almost $120,000 with these horses throughout this show,” Williams said in disbelief. “That’s a lot of money, you know? I’m extremely blessed to be able to have the opportunity to go show such a nice horse, and when you come out on top, there’s no greater feeling.”

members of the reined cow horse community.

“I’m a student of the game,” he said. “I’ve studied these guys for years, and I have so much respect for them. We’ve all become a family, and I’ve become good friends with a lot of these guys. So to come out and for all of them to be whooping and hollering, giving me high fives and shaking my hands and telling me ‘This couldn’t happen to a better person,’ it just means the world to me.”

Heading into the Open Derby Finals, Williams kept his focus on staying grounded.

“My mindset was just to trust my training, trust my horses and let the outcome be what the outcome’s going to be.”

This time, the outcome was a longdeserved and unforgettable victory; proof that years of hard work, loyalty and trust in your horse (no matter how wild they may have started) still pay off at the highest level.

Non Pro Derby Champion

For the second time this year, the team of Hope Mills and the impressive 4-yearold stallion SmartLookinMercedes (Dual Smart Rey x Smooth Play Kit x Smooth As A Cat) have claimed a coveted derby title—proving once again that this pair is not just a fluke, but a force to be reckoned with.

You may recognize their names from earlier this year when the pair won the Non Pro Derby at the NRCHA Stallion Stakes. To win back-to-back premier events as a 4-year-old is a rare but special occurrence.

“These wins mean that he has the heart,” Mills said. “He wants to go show”

But the story of this victory goes far beyond the show pen. Tazzy Es Savvy, bred by Center Ranch and raised by Bonds Ranch, nearly didn’t make it past the early stages of her training. Williams recalled a pivotal conversation with an NCHA professional who was very familiar with her breeding, Tarin Rice, during those uncertain first weeks.

“The funny story is after the first couple weeks we started her, I was honestly contemplating sending her home, because she was just a wild individual,” Williams admitted. “I called Tarin and visited with him about it. Tarin said, ‘Just keep grinding, she’ll come through.’ And he wasn’t lying. She did.”

Her sire, CR Gotcha Covered (Dualin Boon x The Cattac x High Brow Cat), is a proven powerhouse in the performance horse world. The 2019 NCHA Open World Champion and World Champion Stallion boasts over $300,000 in lifetime earnings, all under the guidance of Rice. “Gotcha’s” legacy and talent is alive and well in his daughter.

“She’s been an unbelievable horse,” Williams said. “I feel very blessed to have her. Bonds Ranch has been an incredible customer. They’ve trusted me for years now and we’ve been close a few times but hadn’t been able to pull it off, until now.”

While the hardware and payout are monumental, what moved Williams most was the response from his peers and encouraging

Making the trip to Scottsdale from Oklahoma presents challenges that some might not consider—especially environmental ones. Oklahoma is humid, while Arizona is dry. Coming from a region where the humidity often exceeds 50% during summer to a desert climate can affect how a horse feels.

“He was fresh at the beginning of the show, and I’d never felt him like that before,” Mills said. “I wasn’t sure how it was going to go, but I trusted him”.

That trust and confidence Mills has in her horse to let him do what he loves is truly remarkable and it paid off. We all know that the cattle element separates this sport from others, but it can also create a mind game that messes with your head, especially when you make it to the finals.

“The cows looked totally different from the prelim cows; you can’t get into your head and you can’t think about it too much,” Mills said. “The cows will be what they are.”

Mills took the pressure off of performing and gave her horse a chance to have fun and be good.

“There’s never a moment when I’ve shown him where he doesn’t want to do it,” Mills said. “It’s always lets keep going.” The pair’s connection has shown in every run. For a young horse to win at this level twice in one year says a lot about their bond. “You don’t have to prove to people that you can do it again,” she said. “It wasn’t just a fluke; he’s a good horse, and he continues to want to try.”

Looking ahead, Mills plans to continue to show

SmartLookinMercedes, giving him every opportunity to do what he loves and keep building on their success together. Their story is another testament that success isn’t solely based on talent. It’s based on trust and perseverance to prove you have it.

“To have a horse that can come off a win at the Stakes means a lot to both me and him, especially as a 4-year-old,” Mills said. “He has taken it like a champ”.

Non Pro Boxing Derby Champion

Consistency and 28 Sour Patch Kids paid off for Erin Keys and Dixies Reybl Yell (Dual Smart Rey x Dizzy Miss Dixie Cat), who claimed the Non Pro Boxing Derby Championship in Scottsdale with a composite score of 647 (R: 215.5/H: 214.5/C: 217). Affectionately known as “Bubba J,” the 6-year-old gelding has been with the Keys family for two years competing, entertaining the kids and keeping the candy aisle clean.

“He is a goober,” Keys said. “You have to keep him in a good mood, and he loves Sour Patch Kids. He gets around 28 every time before we show.”

Bubba J holds many titles: barn favorite, good boy and occasional babysitter, but his proudest title is Keys’ finish yesterday. After countless miles and practice hours, they finally came together as a team. This win is special to Keys for many reasons.

“It’s great to end strong, because we were not strong in the beginning, and I’m super-excited to start him as a bridle horse next,” she said.

They’ve been chasing this win for some time, consistently staying in the top 10 along the way. This past week has proven that consistency counts by staying in the top four of each phase. As always, great riders have an even better team behind them who push, motivate and encourage every ride along the way. Keys expressed her gratitude to those who are a part of her team. “I’d like to thank my trainer, Mark Sigler,” she said. “He’s put up with me for years and is able to get me a horse that I can show and win on. Also, thank you to my husband and family for the support at home.”

Keys final thank you is to the Atlantic and New York Reined Cow Horse Associations for being a great support system.

Christmas in July: PBR Teams Season Starts in Oklahoma

After the draft in Brazil, trades, draftees and rookies shaking up the teams, the stage is set for a scorching new season. The countdown to the July 11th kickoff is on, and here’s where the teams stack up in our preseason power rankings. You decide if it’s bull or fact.

*The rankings and opinions expressed by the author are solely those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official views or positions of PBR or its affiliates.

As the summer heats up and Pro Rodeo athletes begin their “Christmas in July” run, kicking off with the Xtreme Bulls on June 19 and then the rodeo in Reno, Nevada, there’s no shortage of action across the Western sports world. It’s cowboy chaos in the best way—with three major paths unfolding at once.

Some PBR riders will stay home and rest up for the grueling team season ahead, while others will chase momentum in Chad Berger’s King of the North series, where $100,000 is on the line. Meanwhile, many more will keep grinding it out for points and payouts in the newly revised PBR Challenger Series. After all, not everyone can be on a team roster, and this stretch of the calendar— aptly nicknamed Cowboy Christmas—might be their best shot to break through or get hot at the right time.

Still, while the summer run scatters talent across the country, all eyes within the PBR begin to shift toward one thing: the return of the PBR Camping World Team Series, now heading into its fourth season with more hype, more storylines, and more talent than ever before.

From July 11–13, the 2025 campaign officially kicks off in Oklahoma City with Wildcatter Days, hosted by the hometown Oklahoma Wildcatters at the Paycom Center. All 10 teams will be looking to start strong and set the tone for the season.

in Oklahoma City, we’re breaking down our Preseason Power Rankings—team by team—looking at who’s stacked, who’s rebuilding, and who’s got the most to prove heading into Season 4.

Last year’s Team Series saw league expansion, jumping from eight teams to ten with the addition of the Wildcatters and the New York Mavericks. Now, with a full offseason under their belts, it’ll be interesting to see how the expansion teams rebuild and come back stronger in 2025.

For those unfamiliar with the format, this isn’t the same PBR you grew up watching on television. The Team Series brings a professional sports structure to bull riding, creating loyal fan bases for each citybased team, complete with front office staffs, head coaches, trainers, draft picks, trades, and championship chases. Each team will roll into Oklahoma City with the goal of building early momentum—because everyone in the league knows: in this format, slow starts usually affect a team’s final seed heading into the playoffs.

This offseason has seen several major shakeups across the league, with some of the biggest names in bull riding changing jerseys. The most surprising of all? Sage Steele Kimzey—a living legend in both PRCA and PBR circles—moves from the Carolina Cowboys to the Austin Gamblers.

With this and a series of other trades, rosters are starting to take shape. And based purely on talent and depth—not factoring in injuries

The 2025 season promises everything from blockbuster matchups and strategic shakeups to the emergence of new fan-favorite riders and potentially legacy-defining performances. The stakes are higher. The pressure is heavier.

And all eyes are squarely on the reigning champs, the Austin Gamblers.

Will they be able to go backto-back?

Before the gates swing open

changers: Jose Vitor Leme and Sage Kimzey.

Jose Vitor Leme looked absolutely locked in at the 2025 Unleash The Beast World Finals in Fort Worth/Arlington, Texas, becoming one of only three men to ever win three World Championships in the PBR. He now joins the ranks of legendary riders such as Adriano Moraes and Silvano Alves. If he brings that same level of focus into the Team Series, there’s no telling how high his riding percentage will climb. He’s the undisputed home run hitter of this roster.

just yet— here’s how I see things shaking out going into the new season.

Power Ranking #1: Austin Gamblers – Built for a Second Title Run

If the Austin Gamblers can stay healthy, they have the tools to dominate. Their lineup now includes two riders who are nothing short of game-

But when you add Sage Kimzey to the mix—a seventime PRCA World Champion, three-time CBR World Champion, and a consistent top-five contender in the PBR for as long as he wants to be—things get serious. Even though he was pretty beat up at the 2025 UTB World Finals, the time between the end of UTB and the start of the Teams season – about seven weeks – could give him just enough room to recover.

If he comes in anywhere near his usual form, it could be a career-redefining season for Sage—and a title-contending year for the Gamblers.

Expect both Jose and Sage to be in the MVP conversation for most of the season.

As the developer of Racehorse Strength Equi-Block® and LaKOTA®, one of Canada’s top joint supplement and topical pain relief brands, as well as the co-developer of Magic Cushion®, SLIDE™ founder Rick Stewart knows a thing or two about combating joint pain. “I grew up in horse racing. We had one of the top standardbred racing stables in California and western Canada”, he states. Being in the racehorse business Stewart has dealt with his share of joint, ligament, tendon, hoof and back problems in his horses. “Lameness is the biggest thing that racehorse trainers deal with. It’s a never ending battle”, he says.

According to Stewart, feeding 200 mg a day of hyaluronic acid didn’t produce any noticeable benefits in his horses; neither did 500 mg or even 1,000 mg of hyaluronic acid daily. “It wasn’t until I starting feeding my horses 2,500 mg of hyaluronic acid a day that I began to see some pretty decent results”, he says. “I finally settled on 2,500 mg of hyaluronic acid twice a day for a total of 5,000 mg

In the early 1990’s, Stewart began feeding hyaluronic acid to his horses hoping to prevent joint problems from occurring. “I developed the first capsaicin based topical pain reliever for horses (Equi-Block®) and I was probably the first to feed hyaluronic acid, too. It wasn’t in any equine joint supplements back in the 90’s, but veterinarians were injecting it into painful joints and it seemed to work pretty good for a short period of time. I started feeding my sore horses 200 mg a day of hyaluronic acid. I did that for a couple of months and then gauged the results”.

daily and I’ve been feeding those dosages to my horses for three decades now. I put all my young horses on SLIDE™ and I’ve never had any of them develop joint problems as they got older. And it seems to stop degeneration of cartilage in horses with existing joint problems as they all improve on SLIDE™. I’ve seen some very profound results in horses that were already suffering from joint pain after feeding them SLIDE™ for less than 30 days, and so have many others that have used SLIDE™ on their lame horses”.

Stewart says that the majority of equine joint supplements on the market today with hylauronic acid are mainly glucosamine based with very small amounts of hyaluronic acid added for marketing purposes. “Hyaluronic acid at the doses that SLIDE™ provides absolutely works. But existing equine joint supplements with hyaluronic acid don’t have enough in them to see any benefits from the hyaluronic acid. The amount of hyaluronic acid in equine joint supplements averages about 200 mg per recommended daily serving; those small amounts won’t do anything for joints, or for intervertbral disc health”, he says. “SLIDE™ works as good as it does because it contains 5,000 mg of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid per recommended daily serving. That’s 4,800 mg MORE hyaluronic acid per day than the average equine supplement containing hyaluronic acid. No other equine supplement with hyaluronic acid comes anywhere close to providing the amount of hyaluronic acid found in SLIDE™”.

According to Stewart, keeping joints healthy and pain free is all about maintaining and increasing lubrication inside joints. “Having sufficient lubrication within the joint is actually what protects the cartilage. It’s like the oil in your vehicle engine; it’s the oil that protects the moving parts. If there isn’t enough oil then the parts wear down faster and eventually disintegrate. Same thing goes for protecting joint cartilage, you have to keep sufficient lubrication in the joint at all times as that’s what protects the cartilage on the bone ends”.

He continues; “Hyaluronic acid is the major compound that creates synovial fluid, which is the lubrication found inside joints. Race and performance horses need more joint support and

lubrication than a horse ridden for pleasure because of the workloads they place on their joints. There are some really good horses that have had their competitive careers cut short due to joint damage. But it doesn’t have to be that way anymore if horse owners take a preventative approach using SLIDE™”.

In his 30 years of using high doses of hyaluronic acid Stewart has never seen any ill effects, just a multitude

of incredible therapeutic benefits. “Hyaluronic acid has a great safety profile. It’s water soluble and doesn’t build up or get stored in the body. It’s constantly being used up and replenished. In humans, our bodies naturally make 5,000 mg of hyaluronic acid per day when we’re in our 20’s, but internal production begins to decline dramatically in our 30’s. At age 50, our bodies are only making 2,500 mg a day of hyaluronic acid; just half the amount it made when we were

in our 20’s. And at age 75, we only have one quarter the amount of hyaluronic acid in our body that we had in our 20’s”, he points out. “It’s no wonder our joints and intervertebral discs fall apart and we get joint and low back pain as we get older; there’s not enough hyaluronic acid being produced by our bodies anymore in order to maintain sufficient lubrication in our joints or the gel-like fluid inside the discs of the spine. Don’t kid yourself that there isn’t a correlation between

From previous page

hyaluronic acid levels and cartilage and intervertebral disc degeneration as we age - there is”.

Stewart maintains the same holds true for wrinkles and crepey skin as people grow older, that there isn’t sufficient amounts of hyaluronic acid in the body to keep the dermis and epidermis nourished and healthy. “If you bring your hyaluronic acid levels back up you’ll see some magical things begin to happen. I personally take 2,800 mg of hyaluronic acid every single day and I have no joint or back pain and great skin and I’m 60 years old”.

Stewart says the hyaluronic acid supplements currently on the market for people are no better than existing equine supplements. “Depending on the brand you buy the daily recommended amount of hyaluronic acid is 100 to 200 mg a day; basically about the same amount as most equine supplements recommend. These amounts are way too low to see any noticeable benefits. If you’re 50 or older and your daily internal production of hyaluronic acid is down by 2,500 mg or more from what your body produced in your 20’s, do you really think you’re going to see great results on 100 or 200 mg a day? No, you’re not. I have long maintained that hyaluronic acid is the ‘fountain of youth’ nutrient that mankind has long been searching for, but you have to take enough of it if you want to see real benefits”.

A palatable powder that horses eat right up, SLIDE™ isn’t just hyaluronic acid, it’s a joint supplement unlike anything ever put on the market for horses. The two recommended daily servings not only provide your horse with an incredible, industry leading 5,000 mg of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid per day, but also 5,000 mg of N-acetyl glucosamine (a precursor for hyaluronic

acid synthesis), 5,000 mg of glucosamine HCL, 5,000 mg of hydrolyzed collagen and 2,000 mg of unhydrolyzed collagen type II (this is the major collagen found in articular cartilage and intervertebral discs of the spine. SLIDE™ is the only equine hyaluronic acid supplement that contains this im-portant form of collagen). None of the ingredients are banned substances for equine competition.

SLIDE™ also provides many other great health benefits for horses besides joint support, including helping heal and prevent ulcers. We encourage you to read the SLIDE™ equine and human eBooks online at slidejointcare.com as it describes in detail what makes SLIDE™ the premier hyaluronic acid joint supplements in the world today. It’s well worth the read and full of great information many people don’t know about hyalu-ronic acid.

Now affordably priced so equine owners and trainers can reap its incredible benefits on their own horses, SLIDE™ is available in 4.4 lb ($120.00 USD) and 22

lb ($400.00 USD) sizes. The larger size is an incredible value and treats 5 horses for 30 to 60 days for just $40.00 to $80.00 USD per horse depending on whether it’s fed once or twice daily. Even with just a single daily serving, SLIDE™ still provides far more hyaluronic acid (2,500 mg a day) than any other equine supplement containing this important and vital compound for equine health and well-being.

SLIDE™ is also available in human ($60.00 USD) and canine ($70.00 USD) versions, both contain the highest amounts of hyaluronic acid you will find in any human or canine HA supplement on the market today.

SLIDE™ is available at your local tack store on online at www.SlideJointCare.com

D. Wayne Lukas

The American Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred Hall of Famer died at 89

Legendary racehorse trainer D. Wayne Lukas, a Hall of Famer in both the American Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred industries, passed away peacefully at his home in Louisville, Kentucky, on June 28. He was 89.

With roots deeply embedded in Quarter Horse racing, trainer D. Wayne Lukas crossed into Thoroughbred racing in the late 1970s. Several years ago, Lukas came back to his roots and has not regretted it.

Prior to his racing days, the Wisconsin native coached high school basketball and was a

pretty good horseman at Park Jefferson, South Dakota. Lukas saddled the winning Quarter Horses Dash For Cash, Flight 109, Little Blue Sheep and She’s Precious.

In 1979, Lukas saddled his last Quarter Horse winner and went on to train Thoroughbreds. Success followed Lukas into

the Thoroughbred circles, and the trainer saddled 15 Triple Crown race winners, including four Kentucky Derby winners. Lukas was also the first trainer to condition the earners of $100 million. At one time, Lukas had conditioned 20 champion Thoroughbreds, including horses of the year Lady’s Secret and Criminal Type.

Lukas bought the American Quarter Horse Sir Ryon, a son of Ronas Ryon, in 1997, just before the final of the Kindergarten Futurity. Lukas soon had a barn at Los Alamitos in California and was conditioning Quarter Horses once again. His horses included First Special Dash, Drop Your Sox and Private Venture.

“My absolute fondest memories, without a doubt, are of my days with Quarter Horses in the Southwest,” said Lukas. “Goliad, Sunland Park, Ruidoso – those were great times; nothing like ‘em.”

Lukas was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2007.

The following is a statement from the Lukas family, sent out by Churchill Downs:

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved husband, grandfather and great-grandfather, D. Wayne Lukas, who left this world peacefully yesterday evening at the age of 89, surrounded by family.

“Wayne devoted his life not only to horses but to the industry – developing generations of horsemen and horsewomen and growing the game by inviting unsuspecting fans into the winner’s circle.”.

Fappani and Paint power shines at 2025 NRHA European Futurity

Photos by Bonaga Communication

Reining fans across Europe witnessed a surge of color and talent at the 2025 NRHA European Futurity in Cremona, Italy, where the American Paint Horse Association’s Chrome Cash program took center stage. With a record-breaking 70 entries—a huge increase in participation from previous years—the Paint Horse presence was undeniable, and so was the payout: more than $12,000 in Chrome Cash was awarded, including $8,000 in added money courtesy of APHA.

“This year’s turnout was incredible, and the level of competition was inspiring,” said Irene Stamatelakys, APHA’s director of international membership. “From Non-Pro to Open, riders and owners proved that Paints can compete and win at the highest levels in Europe.”

Topping it all was the electric performance of Andrea Fappani and Hosss, who thrilled the crowd with a stunning 225.5 to capture

the NRHA Euro Futurity Open Level 4 Chrome Cash title. Their ride wasn’t just a win—it was a homecoming celebration that underscored the international power of the Paint Horse in the reining pen.

Deary & Custom Dreams Win NRHA Derby in OKC

NRHA Open Derby champions were crowned for the first time in the OG&E Coliseum at the 6666 NRHA Derby presented by Markel on Saturday, June 21.

NRHA $5 Million Rider Casey Deary and Customize My Dream carried the torch for the sport of reining to become Level 4 Open Derby Champions.

The team dazzled with their powerful maneuvers and finesse, wrapping up the aged event portion of the competition with a stunning 233.5. The 6-year-old stallion, who was nominated by Garth Hystad, took home $100,000 (including nominator incentives) for the performance.

“That horse didn’t have 15 minutes worth of warming up before he came in here to horse show,” said Deary, who also showed the horse’s full brother Custom Dreams from Draw 26. “He stopped and ran backward really well. I felt like the finish work on each maneuver helped sell the deal. He turned around really good both ways, and I finally got it shut off at the right spot. “He circled great — fast and slow — and the lead change worked really well,” Deary continued. “He rolled back extremely well both directions, and I think that helped move the needle up.”

meaningful.

“This horse was raised by the Warren family,” Deary said. “It was a pretty special night to win it on him, a really great opportunity for that horse to shine. There’s a lot of people praying for that whole family. It’s out of our hands, but it’s not out of God’s hands. It was special for Garrett [Warren’s son] to get to be here and watch all of it and get to be included in it. You try to make as many happy moments as you can make.”

Among the happy moments over the last week were stellar performances in the preliminary round. Customize My Dream tied for third in the prelim with a 228, while Custom Dreams, another horse from Warren’s program now owned by Custom Dreams Brazil, won the first round after marking a 229.5. Both horses are by NRHA Hall of Famer Magnum Chic Dream and out of Gunna Be Custom.

Custom Dream finished Top 5 in the finals with a 227.5, worth $22,046. Deary’s third finalist, Pale Face Vintage (Platinum Vintage x Chic Out My Gold), marked a 222.5 to land 21st and $4,680 for owner Robert Escoe.

The crowd erupted with excitement as Deary and his team were overcome with emotion. Deary called it an honor to be the first NRHA Level 4 Open Derby Champion in the new facility, but winning it for owner/breeder Devin Warren was even more

Customize My Dream, who was the 2022 NRHA Level 4 Open Futurity Reserve Champion with Deary, now boasts incredible NRHA lifetime earnings of more than $400,000. And with such talented horses in his string, Deary is looking forward to the remainder of the show season. He said the next major stop for his Derby standouts is likely The Run For A Million.

“They’re really good,” Deary said. “They’re happy and they’re sound, so I’m going to keep going as long as they’ll let me.”

VS Total Heartthrob claims APHA Superior All-Around Award

The APHA Superior All-Around award is one of the highest perpetual honors a Paint Horse can earn, and VS Total Heartthrob has recently added his name to the list of recipients of the coveted award. The 2015 bay tovero stallion was bred by Vanessa Anderson of Columbus Grove, Ohio. “Luke” is owned by Candice Monsen and Cooper Evans of Kaysville, Utah, and Riverton, Utah, respectively. He is by VS

Flatline (QH) and out of She Can Cadillac.

Luke earned the Superior All-Around Award in 2024, adding another title to his already impressive résumé. He is a multiple APHA world champion and has earned 1,393.5 lifetime APHA points.

After his success at the 2019 APHA World Championship Show in Fort Worth, Texas, where he earned three world championships and the AllAround Novice Amateur title, Candice decided to aim for the Superior All-Around title. The honor requires earning a Superior award at halter and at least one performance event, as well as Registers of Merit in four additional performance categories.

Fortunately, Luke is wellrounded. He has 10 Superiors and 28 Registers of Merit to date in events ranging from hunter under saddle, over-fences classes, trail, Western pleasure, Western riding and stake race. Candice calls him “a true all-around horse.”

WORLD CHAMPION JOSH FROST MAKES HIS RETURN

Josh Frost has returned.

The Randlett, Utah, cowboy has been sidelined since his PRCA Bull Riding World Championship last December in Las Vegas at the 2024 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge with a shoulder injury that required surgery to repair.

The result was missing most of the 2025 PRCA season, creating an uphill battle for the world champion to defend his title. But Frost's return was a welcome sight to PRORODEO fans and athletes. Even if it didn't go the way he had planned.

"It didn't go as planned," said Frost of his return at the Snake

River Stampede in Nampa, Idaho, on June 20. "But we all get bucked off sometimes. But the important thing is my body is feeling good and we're excited for the next one."

Frost finished 18th overall at Snake River. But that was just his warm up.

The 30-year-old competed in Pleasant Grove, Utah, the following night on June 21 at the Strawberry Days Rodeo. He matched up against Legacy Pro Rodeo's Thrasher, a bull that had bucked off three out of four cowboys it faced so far this season.

The end result for Frost was an 87-point trip and a $2,701 payday — his first winnings of the season.

"I changed my riding style from how I was riding before," Frost said. "We've got a lot of good stuff to build on and make momentum moving forward."

Frost finished Strawberry Days Rodeo in a three-way tie for second place. Riley Barge and Kobie Olson matched Frost's 87-point effort.

Frost followed up his Strawberry Days performance with an 84-point ride on Frontier Rodeo's Fair Trade at the Silver State Stampede in Elko, Nev., adding $2,599 to his ledger.

Stetson Wright, the current all-around leader in the PRCA Bill Fick Ford World Standings and No. 2 bull rider, took home the Strawberry Days title with a 87.5-point ride that also came against Thrasher earlier in the week.

Frost's injury initially occurred during the 2024 season at the Cowtown Rodeo Xtreme Bulls in Woodstown Pilesgrove, N.J. He aggravated the injury at the Pendleton Whisky Xtreme Bulls Tour Finale, Sept. 9, in Pendleton, Ore. At the time, he was No. 1 in the standings with a $30,000 cushion.

He took time off before the NFR, returning to win his first gold buckle. Just three days later, he had surgery to repair his torn labrum and rotator cuff.

Defender U.S. Eventing Team

Takes Second in FEI Eventing Nations Cup Bicton CCIO4*-NC-S

by US Equestrian Communications Dept. | May 26, 2025, 4:56 PM Bicton, Great Britain – The Defender U.S. Eventing Team secured a well-earned podium finish in the FEI Eventing Nations Cup CCIO4*-S hosted in Bicton, Great Britain. The team completed the weekend on a team total of 132.9, with Jenny Caras and Sommersby finishing as the highest placed U.S. combination individually in 10th on a 39.4. The team was led by Chef d’Equipe Karyn Shuter and Team Leader Gemma Stobbs. Great Britain finished on top of the leaderboard on a final total of 87.8, while New Zealand took third.

“The team gained valuable experience from this weekend and produced some very respectable results for the first competition of the tour,” said Karyn Shuter, U.S. Eventing Team High Performance Advisor and Chef d’Equipe for the Development Tour. “With Bramham and Luhmühlen still to come, there is more opportunity for them to continue developing their skills and build a more comprehensive understanding of what it takes to be competitive amongst the best.”

The team started with the first phase of dressage on Friday, with Olivia Dutton (West Grove, Pa.) and Sea of Clouds, a 2011 Thoroughbred (Malibu Moon x Jolie’s Halo) gelding, owned by the Sea of Clouds Partnership, and cared for by Emma Yanek, finishing as the only combination to score a sub-30 mark, earning a 29.7. The other three team combinations received scores under 35 penalties, keeping the team competitive against the four other nations represented in the team-format competition.

“The Last Rodeo” with Neil McDonough tackles bull riding with surprising heart and realism

A longtime rodeo insider’s review: The Last Rodeo bucks expectations with a heartfelt comeback story that rings true beyond the usual Hollywood bull.

As someone who’s been involved in this industry in one way or another for at least 25 years, I’ve seen every movie Hollywood has ever made about our culture and way of life. From 8 Seconds to The Longest Ride—basically, if it had anything to do with rodeo or bull riding, I’ve seen it.

That said, The Last Rodeo honestly surprised me. It was far better than I expected.

I really appreciated the backstory and the reasoning behind why Joe Wainwright— Neal McDonough’s character— had to come out of retirement. I also thought it was interesting that the film, in some ways, reflected a real event that happened years ago: Unfinished Business, a onenight pay-per-view put on by J.W. Hart in Decatur, Texas, where several legends came out of retirement for one more ride. That might have inspired the film’s comeback storyline, and if so, it was a smart choice.

When I first saw the trailer, I thought, “Here we go—another bull riding movie. I wonder how this one’s going to play out.” I half-expected they’d use The American as the event where he comes out of retirement to pay for his grandson’s medical bills. But I actually liked the direction they took—it was different, and it worked.

One small but interesting detail: seeing Daylon Swearingen—the 2022 World Champion and one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet—riding under the name Billy Hamilton. That caught my attention because there actually was a Billy Hamilton who roped calves in the Prairie Circuit back in the early 2000s. I don’t know if that was intentional or just a name they liked, but it stood out to me. Regardless, Daylon did a fantastic job. He, like so many real cowboys, knows how to

push others to be better—and I was glad the film showed that.

I appreciated how it showed that in our culture, when tragedy strikes, we all come together—because that’s the cowboy way.

If I had to rate it, I’d give it a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Here’s why it’s a half star short of perfect: Joe Wainwright hadn’t been on a bull in 15 years and had a rod in his neck. I understand the need for Hollywood dramatics, but that’s just not realistic. I’ve had close friends with similar injuries who were never able to ride again. Now, is it possible to come back from something like that? Nothing is impossible when you believe in God. But this character couldn’t even ride a mechanical bull, and then three days later he’s expected

to climb on PBRcaliber bucking bull athletes and be successful? From a cinematic standpoint, I understand why they did it—but realistically, it doesn’t add up.

And while we’re on that point—I’ve never understood why Hollywood feels the need to throw a mechanical bull into so many of these movies. No one who makes their living riding bulls trains on a mechanical bull. At least not since I’ve been around. That might have been a thing before I was born, but in my experience, mechanical bulls are for drunk guys in bars—not professionals.

That said, the movie was so good, I honestly don’t even care. Go see The Last Rodeo for Father’s Day!

I want to take the time to sincerely thank Angel Studios and the PBR for allowing me the opportunity to screen the film. I hope that everyone goes and checks it out, and I hope you guys hear from me a lot more.

STETSON WRIGHT

REGAINING HIS STRIDE IN DOMINANT BULL RIDING RUN

Stetson Wright has been waiting for this feeling.

At the 2023 National Finals Rodeo, the Beaver, Utah, native sustained a hamstring injury that ended his time in the arena. Following surgery, Wright had hoped to return to competition midway through 2024, but as the schedule wore on, he decided to take the entire year off to focus on a full recovery.

When the 2025 PRORODEO season opened, Wright was eager to climb back into a bucking chute. He’s been consistent in his return, picking up some big wins and even bigger checks, putting him first in the all-around and second in the PRCA | Bill Fick Ford Bull Riding World Standings.

But even with all that success, Wright still hasn’t been fully comfortable. That appears to be changing.

As the June schedule closed, Wright put together a showcase to remind everyone why he is one of the most dominant competitors in the PRCA.

Wright went on a tear, winning the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo, the Rodeo of The Ozarks in Springdale, Ark., and the West of The Pecos (Texas) Rodeo. Between his four rides, his lowest score was 89.5 points.

“I was actually telling (my brother) Ryder tonight when I got done (in Reno) that I haven’t felt this good in, shoot, I can’t even remember how long,” Wright said. “I’ve made some good rides this year and I’ve rode some good bulls, but it just wasn’t feeling exactly I guess the way I was anticipating it feeling. But these last few days it felt like I was either back to my old self or even better – and I’d like to think better because that’s what you’re supposed to do every year is get better and not stay in the same place.”

Screwworm is Spreading North

What is the risk of screwworm to horses?

Screwworm myiasis (infestation) is caused by fly larvae (maggots) that feed on living tissue of any warmblooded animal. Humans can be infected with screwworm larvae. The larvae are deposited on wounds or superficial body cavities such as the nose and sheath of

horses where they feed and grow. Untreated wounds often develop multiple infestations which are more likely to kill the animal.

Has screwworm ever entered the United States?

Screwworm was declared eradicated in 1966 from the U.S. using the sterile insect technique, which involves

releasing sterile male flies to disrupt reproduction, gradually reducing the pest population. There was an outbreak of screwworm in 2016 in Florida, which was controlled by sterile flies and was successfully limited to the Florida Keys. This 2016 screwworm eradication effort in Florida was estimated to cost over $10 million for implementing control measures

including the release of 154 million sterile flies and other control measures, such as animal checkpoints.

Why is the US concerned about a screwworm incursion?

If screwworm were to spread into the United States, it would result in significant economic losses and threats to animal health and welfare. The critical control measure is the release of sterile flies. Currently, the production of sterile flies is limited to one facility in Panama which is working at maximum production. Depending on the prevalence of screwworm in Central America and Mexico, the facility may be unable to produce enough sterile flies for expanded distribution to the United States. Thus, US control efforts would need to focus on surveillance for early detection and treatment of infected domestic and wild animals as well as movement restrictions to ensure only healthy treated animals are moved.

How could a screwworm detection in the United States impact Equestrian Sports?

State and federal animal health officials would be responsible for implementing control and eradication efforts, namely quarantines and movement restrictions. Horses infected with screwworm or horses in a geographic area with screwworm present could be placed under quarantine and movement restrictions, at the discretion of state animal health officials. States may restrict equine movement and activities such as equestrian events in a geographic area. As the USDA has not provided specific quarantine or movement restriction parameters, states are developing their own plans and protocols for responding to screwworm incursion.
