The Genesis of the Estate

LEE COURTNEY A LIFE OF HARMONY WITH HORSES

Q - Your stunning new North Scottsdale estate serves as a sanctuary for both your family and your horses. Could you share the visionary journey and the moments of serendipity that led to the acquisition of this remarkable property?”

A - My husband and I spent a few years looking for the right piece of land and his vision for the home immediately started to come to life when we found the lot… he focused on designing a home that would feel welcoming to our friends and family and give us the feel of a tranquil space to unwind together. I had a few simple requests, a BIG kitchen open to an expansive Great room… and of course a barn.

The Architectural Undertaking

Q - “A project of this magnitude, from initial concept to the final flourish, is a monumental endeavor. Who served as the architectural steward for this transformation, and what are the exquisite details that define its unique character?”

The Art of Entertaining

Q - “Since your arrival, the estate has become a vibrant hub for elegant gatherings. What inspired you to open your doors so graciously, and how has the property’s design facilitated these memorable celebrations for family, friends, and clients?”

A - My husband Joe was our architect and general contractor. Although he spent several years in the NBA his true passion was always home design and development. He thoughtfully laid out the home to provide amazing flow and privacy. I love the function of all the spaces and our hidden kitchen that makes entertaining fabulous because the main kitchen stays nice and clean. As you step outside, he blended the beauty of the dessert with clean lines a sparkling pool and spa wrapped in limestone pavers and some beautiful date palm trees. The tree view gives a very resort feel. The barn is truly its own space and so thoughtfully designed with a great layout for the horses to have good visibility and easy access to the arena and wash bay it is also a fun place for entertaining friends with a full living room and kitchen and easy access to get the trailer in and out, and deliveries too. It is very secure, and I know my horses are safe which is very important.

A - We feel from the moment we moved in we wanted to share our home. We live by a motto “Life is About Celebrating” because every day is a gift and there is always a reason to open a bottle of champagne! We feel so blessed to know so many wonderful people and feel so honored to share this space celebrating every occasion we can. Our media room has probably played the greatest role as we have room for 24 guests and have had the privilege to host a private movie screening, many movie nights and of course a super bowl party too.

New Beginnings: The Foal

Q - “The arrival of a new foal is always a momentous occasion. Tell us about this precious new addition to your stable and the horses that currently grace your barn.”

A - We could not be more excited than with the birth of our beautiful filly! She was born perfectly black with four white socks and a heart for a star! Truly a little angle so we named her Angeleesi and her dams name is Khaleesi. When we bought Khaleesi I just loved that my name was in her name. She is my heart horse, and she stamped a heart right on the baby!

The Mares Enjoying Sunrise Turnout

An Enduring Equestrian Passion

Q - “Your profound affinity for horses is woven into the fabric of your life. Could you recount the origin of this lifelong devotion and how your personal ‘equestrian habit’ evolved into such a central pillar of your identity?”

A - Since I was a little girl, I always dreamed of having a barn with my own horses. Although our lifestyle growing up wasn’t very conducive for horses, and I knew once I was able to do it, I would make that dream a reality. For years when I would tour the horse properties I was selling, I would make mental notes of what made sense and what did not.

Lee and Her Girls

Designing the barn with my husband was so much fun. I wanted it to be a happy place, and I truly feel that every day. My daily life with my horses is truly about exploring the Arizona Landscape. Although they have had a ton of success in the show ring we love our trail rides. I feel blessed to have camped in the Prescott Forest, riding ten miles, and spending many miles at the salt river exploring the wild horses and countless rides through Browns ranch.

The Lifestyle Barn & Lounge

Q

-“Upon entering the barn, one is immediately struck by its seamless blend of utility and refined comfort, complete with a lounge and gourmet kitchen and full working office! What was the inspiration behind creating a space where professional productivity and equestrian life coexist so harmoniously?”

A - We wanted the barn to function as a home for our horses but also a space we could do business, as the more time I can spend near the horses the better, so my husband designed a large barn however we only made 4 stalls. The entire other side is for entertaining, and my

Lee & Friends Celebrating the New YearRed Carpet Style with her Mare Maggie

office conveniently stares straight at my mare’s stall. I leave the doors open while I am working, and I can see her and her beautiful foal. It is truly a wonderful place to be! It never feels like work. We also built a full living room complete with a full kitchen as I wanted the barn to be a space someone could live; the office could easily be a bedroom, and we do have a full laundry room too.

The Foundation of Family

Q -“A flourishing career is often anchored by a steadfast support system. In what ways does your family provide the fundamental strength and encouragement that allows you to pursue your passions with such vigor?”

A - My family, primarily my husband has always pushed me to do what I love. Selling Real Estate has been something I have enjoyed doing for more than twenty-five years. Both my husband and my son have always been supportive of my schedule because Real Estate does take up a lot of weekend time.

A Day in the Life: The Symphony of Balance

Q -“Navigating the intricacies of high-stakes real estate, equestrian care & competitions, plus family life is a delicate dance. Having everything centralized at one location must be transformative; walk us through a quintessential day in the life of Lee Courtney.”

A - My morning starts when the sun comes, up so this time of year that is about 6:45. I feed my horses and watch the sun rise. I say some prayers as the sun drenches my face. It’s so magical! I usually head inside to feed our dogs and start coffee; my husband and I make an effort to always have coffee together before we start our day. After coffee, it’s time for email, return texts or calls from the night before and then Pilates or a morning walk around if my schedule permits. Most days ramp up for showings and appointments and then I am usually finished mid to late afternoon. I am grateful to have a wonderful barn assistant who cleans daily and feeds lunch. After my day wraps up my husband and I usually enjoy some wine or champagne, catch up and enjoy some dinner. Then I tuck in the horses around 8PM. Although my barn has stalls and paddock’s, I do restrict my mare and her foal from the paddock overnight. I always give the girls two carrots and an apple and a flake of teff grass for over-night grazing.

Legacy and the Horizon Q - “Ascending to the #1 position on the West USA Top Producers list multiple times in 2025 is a testament to your unparalleled expertise in the luxury equestrian market. As you look toward the horizon, what ambitious new milestones are you aiming for, and what exclusive listings are currently capturing your professional focus?”

A - “Looking forward, I want to continue to represent the finest homes and ranches and continue my work in philanthropy. I am so grateful for the opportunity to give back. I want to continue to learn more. I feel strongly that I have been blessed with the best clients and opportunities I could ever wish for, and I pray God just keeps his best people in my path. My life focus is the same as my professional focus, always do good and always treat people with respect. I am very excited about the new listings I have coming soon and currently on the market. From turn-key living to huge ranches I have something for everyone - and if I don’t have it, I will find it.

Where Cowgirls Rise and the Next Generation Takes Shape

At its heart, the cowgirl way of life is built on grit, creativity, and the willingness to pass knowledge forward. That spirit comes fully alive at Art of the Cowgirl, returning for its eighth annual flagship event at Rancho Rio in historic Wickenburg, Arizona, February 24-28, 2026.

While the word cowgirl may conjure images of speed, strength, and competition, Art of the Cowgirl reveals the full scope of what that title represents. Cowgirls are artists and makers, ranchers and horsewomen, mothers, mentors, and entrepreneurs. Nowhere is that diversity more visible than during this five-day celebration dedicated to honoring, preserving, and advancing Western heritage through the hands and hearts of women.

Founded in 2018 by the late Tammy Pate—a lifelong horsewoman, former Miss Rodeo Montana, and master bootmaker—Art of the Cowgirl was created to elevate women in Western trades and horsemanship while building a lasting, supportive community. That mission continues through the Art of the Cowgirl Fellowship Program, which pairs aspiring artists and horsewomen with Master Artists across disciplines such as fine art, silversmithing, leatherwork, hat making, and horsemanship. Fellowship recipients share their journey during the event, and work created through the program is auctioned to help fund future fellowships.

“Our Fellowship Program can truly be life-changing,” says Jamie Stoltzfus, Director of the Art of the Cowgirl Fellowship Program. “These women gain access to world-class mentorship and a community that believes in sharing knowledge, not guarding it.”

Learning, Competition & Community

Art of the Cowgirl offers an expansive lineup of hands-on workshops covering traditional and contemporary Western skills— from leatherwork and bosal building to storytelling, photography, entrepreneurship, brand building, and horsemanship. Workshops are limited in size, require pre-registration, and include a five-day event pass. Registration is open now at ArtOfTheCowgirl.com.

“If you’re looking to grow artistically or deepen your horsemanship, these workshops are incredibly rich,” says Event Director, Jamie Jo Steen. “The openness of instructors sharing their hard-earned knowledge is what makes Art of the Cowgirl so special.”

Beyond education, the event features live demonstrations, over 100 trade show booths, art auctions, live music, an invitational horse sale, and elite cowgirl competitions, drawing top talent from across the country.

“Every year the caliber of competitors continues to rise,” says Mesa Pate, Director of Competitions and the Invitational Horse Sale. “These women showcase the very best of modern cowgirl athleticism and horsemanship.”

Spotlight on Competition

Crowd favorites include the Merck Animal Health Breakaway Roping presented by Kimes Ranch and the All-Girl Team Roping presented by Merck Animal Health, with competition kicking off Tuesday, February 24. The Wrangler All-Women’s Ranch Rodeo presented by COWGIRL Magazine brings four-woman teams together in events modeled after real ranch work, with finals on Friday afternoon, February 27 at 4:00 p.m. followed by awards and live music from Olivia Harms.

The prestigious Kimes Ranch World’s Greatest Cowgirl presented by Western Horseman highlights true versatility through herd work, reining, steer stopping, and cow work. Finals take place Saturday, February 28 at 1:30 p.m., leading into the Invitational Horse Sale.

Quick Draw Competition & Auction

Six select female artists will compete in the fourth annual Quick Draw Competition, creating original works live over two days. Finished pieces will be completed by 4:00 p.m. on February 25th, with awards presented that evening. Artwork will be available through an auction benefitting the Art of the Cowgirl Fellowship Program, alongside pieces from Fellowship recipients, Master Artists, and makers. Proceeds directly support mentorship opportunities that preserve Western trades for generations to come. Additional details can be found online at ArtOfTheCowgirl. com.

Cowgirls are known for their strength, courage and resilience. Whether they’re working on a ranch, in the arena, at an easel or a workbench, they apply their skills and ingenuity to solve problems and create masterpieces, using their hearts, hands, and creativity. The late Tammy Pate, founder of Art of the Cowgirl, knew this from experience and sought to celebrate and empower women in Western arts and contemporary trades by breaking barriers to entry, investing in their education, empowering them and enriching their lives, while preserving traditions and inspiring innovation. This is the core of the Art of the Cowgirl Foundation, the nonprofit arm of Art of the Cowgirl. Since 2019, the Foundation has awarded 42 fellowships across a variety of vocations, including horse training, boot making, saddle making, fine art, photography, and packing and outfitting.

“The Art of the Cowgirl Fellowship creates such a unique space for women to learn, build relationships and explore the Western traditions that, even in historically male fields, they have been so essential to building and passing on through families and communities,” says 2025 Packing and Outfitting Fellowship Recipient Claire Voris. “The packing and outfitting world can, from the outside, seem very male-dominated, but women have always been in the picture. From hunting outfits to [National] Forest Service strings, thru-riders, fire crews, pack support, and weekend recreationalists, there are more and more women packing in to protect and enjoy our country’s most phenomenal and untouched

thoughtfully start young colts in front of a live audience— highlighting patience, feel, and trust as the foundation of great horse training. The Daybreak Challenge reflects Art of the Cowgirl’s commitment to education, transparency, and the future of Western horsemanship.

Family Day & The Invitational Horse Sale

Saturday is Family Day, featuring demonstrations, live music, horse sale previews, and youth activities including a dummy roping presented by

Rope Smart. Kids 15 and under are free all week.

The event culminates with the Art of the Cowgirl Invitational Horse Sale, featuring Elite Horses and Cowkid Selects, all trained and consigned by cowgirls from across the U.S. and Canada. The sale begins Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in the Wrangler Pavilion, with online bidding available at cci.live.

“The quality and care these consignors put into their horses is unmatched,” says Pate. “Each year we build a stronger, trusted group of women

landscapes. Ensuring that those highly skilled women are aware of their community is just as important as making sure that interested beginners have the tools they need to be safe and successful in their outdoor endeavors. Mentors like Lisa Barnes, who are willing to share what they know to make both of those goals a reality for women in packing, are such a gift. I am so appreciative that Art of the Cowgirl keeps these traditional arts alive while simultaneously empowering the next generation of women to make them their own.”

This year, the Foundation is awarding six fellowships:

• Saddle Making with Nancy Martiny

• Fine Art with Mary Ross Buchholz

• Rawhide Braiding with Bill Ferreira

• Horsemanship with Lee Smith

• Silversmithing with Barbara Jacques

• Breakaway Roping with Lari Dee Guy.

If you’ve ever wanted to dive deeper into a Western art or trade, enhance your skills and even build your own business, an Art of the Cowgirl Fellowship is the perfect launching point. Our Masters are proven professionals in their respective fields and will equip you with the knowledge and guidance you need to follow your calling with confidence.

“I truly believe that experience and that mentorship have only just begun,” 2025 Chap-Making Fellowship Recipient Erica Mannix observed. “I think those in-person experiences are the beginning of a relationship that I hope we can continue over time. It certainly increased my confidence in my craftsmanship skills and in the quality of the products that I am creating. Julie [Baugher] is a very patient teacher, but she will also push you to take your work to the next level, whether that is in construction, design or work efficiency She is highly focused on quality and durability, and since I intend to focus on working gear, her feedback and assurance in my work have helped me build more confidence in myself. Not only did the experience increase my skills and confidence, but it has also

The Scottsdale installment is one of 13 global GCAT events taking place this year, joining other domestic editions in Miami, Florida, and Las Vegas, Nevada. with Cesar de la Cruz

Ongoing Casa Grande, AZ

Train with 9-time NFR heeler Cesar de la Cruz in Casa Grande, Arizona. With over $1.3 million in lifetime earnings and three PRCA Tour Finale titles, Cesar brings elite-level experience to every lesson. Private and semi-private sessions are available for ropers of all skill levels looking to improve their technique, timing, and competitive edge. Whether you’re working on your swing, positioning, or horse handling, Cesar provides personalized coaching tailored to your goals. De la Cruz’s roots run deep in Arizona soil. Raised in South Tucson, he grew up in a family steeped in rodeo tradition. His uncle George Aros qualified for the NFR four times, and his grandfather Victor Aros—a World War II veteran—also made it to the Finals. The legendary “Aros Arena” in South Tucson became young Cesar’s classroom, where he learned the fundamentals that would

carry him to the sport’s highest level. His philosophy focuses on giving students all the tools for success in the arena. What sets de la Cruz apart isn’t just his competitive record—it’s his philosophy on the craft. “The heel loop is never thrown,” he teaches. “It’s placed in position.” That emphasis on timing, precision, and feel over raw speed has become the cornerstone of his coaching approach, which includes innovative methods like dummy roping, goat roping, and working with heeling donkeys to build horse fundamentals. PRCA Xtreme Bulls Storm Into Rawhide at Wild Horse Pass in March

Top PRCA bull riders and elite bucking bulls face off during two highintensity nights in the East Valley

CHANDLER, Ariz - Two nights. Thirty-five elite bull riders. And some of the toughest bucking bulls in the world. The Rank 45 PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour, presented by Gila River Resorts & Casinos, charges into the Buck-N Rodeo Grounds at Rawhide at Wild Horse Pass on March 27 and 28, delivering a fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled event built entirely around professional bull riding.

This rodeo event is like no other. The standalone Xtreme Bulls format strips rodeo down to its most intense discipline, putting fans right in the middle of the action from the first buck to the final score.

“Rawhide is built for moments like this,” said Dave Horen, Director of Entertainment at Gila River Development. “From the Buck-N Rodeo Grounds to the energy of Wild Horse Pass, events like these allow us to showcase the venue in a way that feels authentic, exciting and uniquely Arizona. It’s high-impact entertainment in a setting that was made for it.”

The event will feature 35 of the top bull riders in the world, including champions Stetson Wright and Ky Hamilton, matched up against 35 elite bucking bulls in the opening round. The eight highest scores will advance to the championship round, where riders face off against the fiercest bulls in the sport for the Xtreme

It’s intense, unpredictable, and it keeps the crowd on its feet from start to finish.”

The rider lineup includes reigning champions and rising stars, alongside legendary bulls known for delivering explosive performances. The two-hour show will move fast, hit hard and leave fans wanting more - whether they’re lifelong rodeo followers or first-time attendees.

Beyond the arena, the weekend extends across Gila River Resorts & Casinos - Wild Horse Pass with additional fan experiences, including a bull rider meet & greet on Saturday from 2:30 - 5:30 p.m. Following Saturday’s competition, the celebration will continue with an after-party concert at Wild Horse Pass beginning at 9:30 p.m., where champions will be crowned.

1.5 Second Run

The official start of the 2026 rodeo season was back in October, but many consider January the real start to the season with big rodeos kicking off the new calendar year in Odessa, Texas and Denver, Colorado.

The Sandhills Stock Show and Rodeo in Odessa, Texas, features both barrel racing and breakaway roping for the WPRA. This year’s rodeo started on January 8 and will conclude on January 17.

Breakaway roper Makenzie Dowell wasted no time in making a statement at this year’s event, stopping the clock in a blistering 1.5 seconds. Dowell’s closest competitor heading into the final week of competition is Karmen Martin in a time of 2.2 seconds. Dowell is from Marlin, Texas, and is competing on her permit. A win in Odessa will easily help her fill her permit that she bought in October. This would be her first big win in ProRodeo.

Premieres Sunday, March 1 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and streaming on Paramount+ l

Gold Rush Days in Wickenburg

Every February, the town leans into the legends that built it—hard work, wide-open country, and the kind of grit that still shows up in the arena and on the street. In 2026, that tradition turns the page to a remarkable milestone: the 77th Annual Gold Rush Days Celebration & Senior Pro Rodeo, produced by the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce and backed by community-minded sponsors Crescent Crown Distributing, Wickenburg Ranch a Trilogy Resort Community, and The Wellik Foundation.

From Thursday, February 12 through Sunday, February 15, 2026, Gold Rush Days brings four packed days of Western heritage, family entertainment, and rodeo action—anchored by the Senior Pro Rodeo at the Everett Bowman Rodeo Arena. It is the kind of weekend where you can spend the morning on Frontier Street watching a parade roll past the historic Santa Fe Depot, sample hometown food and shop handcrafted goods in the afternoon, and still make it to the grandstands for an evening of competition under arena lights.

justice to Montana. Kayce and his teammates – Pete Calvin (Logan MarshallGreen), Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel), Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) and Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means) – must balance the high psychological cost of serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence with their duty to their families, which for Kayce includes his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) and his confidantes Mo (Mo Brings Plenty) and Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) from the Broken Rock reservation.

Premieres Sunday, March 1 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on-demand) for Paramount+ Premium plan subscribers, or on-demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs).”

The celebration begins on Thursday with a nod to modern rodeo momentum and rising talent: “Roping For Gold” – All Women’s Breakaway Roping. Hosted at the rodeo grounds at 935 Constellation Road, the day is built like a true rodeo performance— books open at 9 a.m., grand entry at 11:30 a.m., and roping at noon. Breakaway continues to energize the sport, and opening Gold Rush Days with an all-women’s event sets the tone: tradition, yes—but also the present and future of Western competition. By late afternoon, the focus shifts downtown as Opening Night kicks off from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. with a family-fun carnival featuring Brown’s Amusements at 160 N. Valentine Street. The carnival is more than rides and lights; it is where generations overlap—kids pulling parents toward the next thrill, neighbors catching up, and visitors realizing quickly that Wickenburg does “welcome” in a very real way.

On Friday, February 13, Gold Rush Days expands across town with a schedule that encourages exploration. Early risers can start at the Classic Car Show on Frontier Street (216 N. Frontier St.) from 9 a.m. to noon, then drift over to the Wickenburg Art Club: Artisan’s Fair at Stone Park & the Wickenburg Public Library (near 160 N. Valentine St.) running 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is a day for browsing: art, crafts, and the kind of handmade pieces that feel tied to the place they came from.

Friday also includes a community-forward event with heart: Breast of Gold: 1 Mile Walk from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at 930 N. Tegner St. By mid-morning, the carnival returns—10 a.m. to 11 p.m.—and Frontier Street becomes a stage. At 10 a.m., Opening Ceremonies unfold in front of the historic Santa Fe Depot, with performances and entertainment featuring Will Roberts and the Wickenburg Marshalls. The day keeps its boots in both worlds—history and showmanship—while setting up the weekend’s signature sports. At 11 a.m., the rodeo program begins to sharpen with Senior Pro Rodeo Slack back at Everett Bowman Arena (935 Constellation Road). Meanwhile, the town’s “gold” theme becomes hands-on with Gold Panning near the Carnivalfrom 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.—a fitting tribute to the region’s origins, made accessible for families and first-timers. Friday evening then offers a marquee performance option: the Del E. Webb Center presents “Larry, Steve & Rudy: The Gatlin Brothers” at 7:30 p.m. (1090 S. Vulture Mine Road), adding a concert-quality finish to a day already rich with activity.

Saturday, February 14 is the centerpiece—part heritage festival, part civic pride, part full-throttle fun. The Artisan’s Fair continues 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the carnival runs 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. On Frontier Street, the morning builds toward Wickenburg’s famous parade energy. At 9 a.m., trick roper Will Roberts performs before

Joan and Sandy Weill’s $120M Gift, Largest Ever to Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis

Commitment from the Weill Family Foundation, led by Joan and Sanford I. Weill, will modernize facilities, advance animal and human health

Courtney Tompkins January 28, 2026

DAVIS, Calif. — The University of California, Davis, today announced the largest gift ever made to veterinary medicine worldwide: $120 million from philanthropists Joan and Sanford I. Weill through the Weill Family Foundation to support its top-ranked veterinary school.

In recognition of this commitment, the university has renamed the school the University of California, Davis, Joan and Sanford I. Weill School of Veterinary Medicine — or simply the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine.

“UC Davis is home to one of the world’s most outstanding veterinary schools and many of the brightest minds in animal and human medicine,” said Sanford “Sandy” I. Weill, a long-serving member of the UC Davis Chancellor’s Board of Advisors. “We are proud to support an institution where groundbreaking research and compassionate care are prioritized together, and where discovery benefits both animal and human health.”

The gift is one of the largest in university history.

The gift is one of the largest in university history. It will strengthen UC Davis’ leadership in comparative medicine — the study of health and disease across species — and advance translational research initiatives for diseases such as cancer, neurological disorders and cardiovascular conditions that affect both animals and humans. The funds will also support a reimagined, leading-edge renewal of the veterinary campus including construction of a small animal teaching hospital and expand the school’s capacity to train the next generation of veterinarians.

“By naming our veterinary school in Joan and Sandy’s honor, we celebrate their transformative generosity and lasting commitment to improve the health of all species,” said Chancellor Gary S. May. “UC Davis is world-renowned for excellence in veterinary medicine, research and service. We are deeply grateful for Joan

the parade, and at 10 a.m. the Gold Rush Parade “Heart of Gold” takes over, featuring Grand Marshal Bill Green and the Double J Court. If you want the “postcard moment” of the weekend—the one where the town looks exactly like its reputation—that is it: a historic street, a proud crowd, and the West on display.

Saturday afternoon returns the spotlight to Everett Bowman Arena with the Senior Pro

Rodeo from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.—a reminder that experience is its own kind of edge. And when the last run is done, the day still is not finished. At 5 p.m., Boots & Boogie begins immediately following Saturday’s rodeo at the arena—part celebration, part community dance floor, and a perfect cap to a full day.

On Sunday, February 15, the weekend closes with one more sweep through the best of Gold Rush Days: the Artisan’s Fair (9 a.m.–5 p.m.),

and Sandy’s vision and partnership to help us accelerate the great work taking place here.”

Dr. Mark Stetter, dean of the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine, said the Weills’ support will revolutionize what is possible in veterinary medicine.

“Joan and Sandy Weill’s extraordinary generosity will allow UC Davis to move faster, think bigger and rise to meet the most urgent challenges facing our world,” Stetter said. “This gift empowers us to drive discoveries, expand access to world-class education and develop new insights at the intersection of veterinary and human health. It launches an exciting new era in veterinary medicine and provides the catalyst needed to advance the construction of our new hospital. With continued support from our philanthropic community, we can bring this vision to completion.”

Eighty million dollars of the gift will help build a new small animal teaching hospital, part of the school’s $750 million Veterinary Medical Complex expansion initiative to build the premier veterinary campus in the world. The current facility, which is already one of the busiest veterinary hospitals in the world, cares for approximately 50,000 patients annually.

Designed to meet the growing demand of clients, educate more students and expand the school’s impact, the state-of-the-art facility will enable: Care for up to 20,000 additional animals across an array of specialties;

More cutting-edge research and clinical trials, advancing treatments that benefit both animals and humans; and Integration of artificial intelligence and precision medicine, unlocking new possibilities in diagnostics, treatment planning and patient outcomes.

The Weills’ support will help UC Davis address the shortage of veterinarians by expanding the facilities and infrastructure needed to recruit and train more veterinary students and specialists in high-demand fields such as emergency and critical care, oncology, neurology, cardiology and primary care.

The remaining $40 million will be dedicated to fundamental and clinical research. The enhanced research funding will accelerate team science, support early-stage discovery projects and enable faculty to pursue high-impact ideas that often fall outside traditional funding sources.

Admission for the Senior Pro Rodeo is straightforward and family-friendly: $20 adults (18+), $15 seniors (60+), $10

The National Reining Horse Association has officially entered a new era, and at its forefront stands Andrea Fappani. With the conclusion of the 2025 NRHA Futurity Open Finals, Fappani became the first and only NRHA rider to surpass $10 million in NRHA Lifetime Earnings, further solidifying his position as the most prolific professional in the association’s history.

For more than two decades, Fappani has defined excellence in the reining pen. His career résumé reads less like a highlight reel and more like a historical record book—one where it is genuinely harder to list the events he hasn’t won than those he has. Across generations of horses, evolving competition, and the sport’s biggest stages, Fappani has remained the benchmark by which greatness is measured.

SHANE HANCHEY EAGER TO CHASE 17TH STRAIGHT NFR,

DENVER — Shane Hanchey doesn’t have anything to prove.

The Sulphur, La., tie-down roper holds the longest active streak of consecutive National Finals Rodeo appearances with 16-straight trips (2010-25) to the biggest stage in the sport. He’s won the NFR average title twice (2013, 2020). And he finished atop the pack in 2013 to win a PRCA World Championship.

SECOND GOLD

BUCKLE

Hanchey boasts a resume worthy of consideration as one of the most consistent tie-down ropers in the modern era. But he’s not content to rest on his accomplishments, and he’s still searching for a second gold buckle.

“It’s the chase to perfect greatness,” Hanchey told the PRORODEO Sports News on Wednesday at the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver. “Every year, I want a gold buckle. One is not enough. It sounds cliché but every year I’m trying to figure out how to go in (to the NFR) in the top five and have a chance at a gold buckle come Round 10.”

Last season, Hanchey snuck into the NFR in the No. 15 spot by $1,635 to keep his streak alive. He placed in a couple rounds in Las Vegas to finish the season 14th with $171,851.

The 36-year-old cowboy is not worried about keeping his streak going in 2026, but is choosing to take the season one rodeo at a time in hopes of entering the NFR in a better position than this past December.

“I try not to think about it because you kind of get stuck in the past when you try to think about how many times you’ve made it,” Hanchey said. “But this past year was special, and it was hard to get into that one. I feel awesome. I just feel like I’m trying to make my first one this year.

“That’s the mindset and mental game that I’ve had every year. I’m trying to make my first one. Then you look up, and you’ve been to 16 in a row. It’s been a heck of a ride, but we’re not done quite yet.”

When Hanchey won the world in 2013, he finished with $202,672. Twelve years later, Riley Webb won the 2025 PRCA World Championship with $555,544 and picked up $250,412 at the NFR alone.

PRCA BOARD CONSIDERING RELOCATING HEADQUARTERS,

HALL OF FAME AND MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN COWBOY TO CHEYENNE

CHEYENNE, Wyo./Colorado Springs, Colo. — The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Board of Directors approved a nonbinding memorandum of understanding to seriously consider relocating the organization’s headquarters, along with the PRCA Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy, to Wyoming. The move would bring

professional rodeo’s premier organization to the Cowboy State, where rodeo is officially recognized as Wyoming’s professional sport, by vote of the Wyoming Legislature. The process was thorough and included productive conversations from multiple locations and a proposal from Colorado Springs leadership.

In addition to a friendly business climate and no

state income tax, Cheyenne offered to build a Hall of Fame and an administrative building to host the PRCA national headquarters with upgraded office space, first class conference rooms and other amenities. The relocation represents a strategic move for the PRCA and underscores Wyoming’s deep-rooted connection to western heritage, rodeo and the cowboy way of

life. The transition is anticipated to occur early in 2029.

The proposed PRCA campus will be located near the highly visible intersection of Interstate 25 and Interstate 80, positioning it at one of the most traveled crossroads in the region. The approximately 35-acre site is envisioned as the anchor of a new westernthemed entertainment, cultural and shopping district, creating a year-round destination for fans, families and visitors from around the world.

PRCA leadership emphasized the long-term benefits of the move for the organization and its members.

“This is a strategic decision that positions the PRCA for the future,” said Tom Glause, CEO of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. “Wyoming lives and breathes rodeo, and Cheyenne offers authenticity, visibility and alignment with our sport’s values. The opportunity to build a purpose-driven campus that celebrates rodeo’s history while supporting its growth is incredibly exciting.”

Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon praised the decision and highlighted its significance for the state’s economy and cultural identity.

“Rodeo has been a part of Wyoming since before we were a state. It is in our DNA. I grew up roping a dummy at every PRCA rodeo, first my dad and then myself, competed in,” Gov. Gordon said. “There is no better place on Earth than right here in the Cowboy State for the PRCA to be headquartered. We have the legacy, respect the tradition, and will always honor the cowboy way and Code of the West. Powder River, Let’er Buck!”

The relocation is contingent upon approval of project funding by the Wyoming Legislature. In December, the Cheyenne LEADS Board of Directors voted to commit $15 million from its reserves as matching funds toward the project. Additional public and private funding sources will be pursued to support development of the campus and surrounding district.

ED “DOC” LETOURNEAU 1959 NFR BULL RIDER DIES

Dr. Ed LeTourneau passed away on Sunday, Jan. 18. He was 90 years old.

LeTourneau qualified for the National Finals Rodeo twice in bull riding in 1959 at the inaugural NFR at the Dallas State Fair Grounds, and in 1961 also in Dallas. He finished fifth in the 1959 world standings and seventh in 1961.

In 1959, LeTourneau won Rounds 8 and 10 and he split second in Round 2 and Round 9. He finished second in the NFR average. When he returned to the NFR in 1961, he split fourth in Round 2 and was second outright in Round 4. He placed fifth in the average.

“I was privileged to have Ed as a traveling partner in my plane,” the late ProRodeo Hall of Famer Larry Mahan said in a Jun 2014 Facebook post. “The

many hours in the air between rodeos gave me a chance to get to know this most unusual of bull riders. First and foremost in my recollection was his positive attitude, intelligence and absolute joy of life.

“But it was his sense of humor and dedication to the sport of rodeo that cemented our friendship, which has flourished for almost 50 years.”

In addition to a successful career in rodeo, which led to his induction into the Bull Riding Hall of Fame in 2022, LeTourneau was an all-around athlete and an accomplished veterinarian.

LeTourneau put himself through veterinary school at the University of California Davis while competing in arenas across the country and earned his veterinary degree by the spring of 1962. As a student, he also excelled on the mat, leading to his 1981 induction to the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame for his contributions in wrestling from 1954-58.

He stayed for an additional year as an intern at the UCDavis Large Animal Clinic.

Dr. LeTourneau went on to open an equine practice in Oakdale, Calif., before settling in Madera, Calif.

“He is an amazing role model for our Western culture and youth,” Mahan said in his post. “What an honor it is for me to know Ed and call him a friend.”

(Washington, D.C., January 22, 2026) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is launching a new online portal to streamline reporting of transactions involving U.S. agricultural land by foreign persons, which can include businesses and governments, under the Agricultural Foreign Investment Disclosure Act of 1978 (AFIDA). The new online portal is part of a broader effort to strengthen

enforcement and protect American farmland as USDA continues its implementation of the National Farm Security Action Plan (PDF, 1.2 MB).

“President Trump is putting America First, and this includes increasing transparency and scrutiny of one of our most valuable national assets, American farmland. We are

working to improve reporting of foreign owned land in the United States. This move to streamline the reporting portal will increase compliance and assist our efforts to effectively enforce accurate reporting of interests held by foreign adversaries in U.S. farmland,” said Secretary Brooke Rollins. “The online

portal will allow us to obtain verifiable information about foreign interests in American agricultural land and protect the security of our farmers.”

The new online portal is available at afida.landmark. usda.gov. Users can access the portal with Login.gov, a sign in service that provides secure online access to participate in certain government programs and reporting requirements.

The new digital portal will gather the same information found on the current form FSA153 and those subject to filing may still file using the current FSA-153 hard copy form if desired. However, filers should not duplicate filings by using both submission options.

About the National Farm Security Action Plan

One of the key tenets of USDA’s National Farm Security Action Plan (PDF, 1.2 MB) is strengthening processes around disclosure of foreign persons who have an interest in U.S. farmland. This historic plan, announced in July 2025, calls for aggressive implementation of reforms to the AFIDA process including improved verification and monitoring of collected AFIDA data. In addition to the new portal, USDA published an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for AFIDA in December 2025.

About AFIDA

The new portal is part of USDA’s efforts to streamline its process for electronic submission and retention of AFIDA disclosures, as initially required by the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023. Today USDA also shared its annual AFIDA report for 2024 with Congress, which is available online. The report lists foreign holdings of U.S. agricultural land as 46 million acres, as of December 31, 2024.

Screwworm Grand Challenge

Driving Innovation to Combat NWS and Prevent its Northward Spread

(Washington, D.C., January 21, 2026) – Today, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins announced the launch of the New World Screwworm (NWS) Grand Challenge. This funding

opportunity marks a pivotal step in USDA’s comprehensive strategy to combat NWS and prevent its northward spread.

“This is a strategic investment in America’s farmers and ranchers and is an important action to ensure the safety and future success of our food supply, which is essential to our national security,” said Secretary Brooke Rollins. “These are the kinds of innovations that will help us stay ahead of this pest and protect our food supply and our economy, protecting the way of life of our ranchers and go towards rebuilding our cattle herd to lower consumer prices on grocery store shelves. We know we have tried-and-true tools and methods to defeat this pest, but we must constantly look for new and better methods and innovate our way to success. As part of the Grand Challenge, USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) will make up to $100 million available to support innovative projects that enhance sterile NWS fly production, strengthen preparedness and response strategies, and safeguard U.S. agriculture, animal health, and trade.

Priority Areas for Funding

APHIS invites proposals that support one or more of the following objectives:

Enhance sterile NWS fly production

Develop novel NWS traps and lures

Develop and increase understanding of NWS therapeutics/treatments (i.e. products that could treat, prevent, or control NWS) for animals

Develop other tools to bolster preparedness or response to NW

Eligible applicants are invited to submit proposals that align with and support these priorities by the deadline on February 23, 2026 at 11:59 PM ET.

USDA Postpones Implementation of Horse Protection Amendments

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 28, 2026—The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) today announced that it will postpone the effective date for the Horse Protection Amendments final rule. Previously scheduled to take effect on February 1, 2026, several provisions of the rule have been vacated by the courts, and the non-vacated provisions will now become effective on December 31, 2026. This postponement follows ongoing legal developments and legislative directives aimed at providing regulatory clarity for the horse industry and federal inspectors.

The final rule, originally published in May 2024, was designed to strengthen the Horse Protection Act (HPA) by replacing the industry-led inspection model with USDA-authorized Horse Protection Inspectors (HPIs) and implementing stricter prohibitions on soring—the cruel practice of using chemicals or mechanical devices to induce an exaggerated gait in horses. However, recent events have required further extension of the implementation timeline:

The delay also relieves horse show managers from new recordkeeping and reporting requirements that were slated to begin in February.

APHIS remains committed to ending soring and enforcing the Horse Protection Act. The agency will use this period to evaluate potential new rulemakings or revisions that align with court rulings and Congressional intent.

For more information regarding the Horse Protection Act and current enforcement standards, please visit the APHIS website.

January 24,

Two-time PBR World Champion Jess Lockwood (Volborg, Montana) was the only rider to go 3-for3 in Tampa this weekend to win the PBR Unleash The Beast event inside a sold-out Benchmark International Arena.

Before tonight’s sweet triumph, Lockwood, who has openly discussed finding himself and God to overcome personal and physical struggles, last won an elite event in 2020. He is a member of the World Champion Carolina Cowboys in the separate PBR Teams league.

Lockwood is the youngest champion in PBR history, winning the title as a 20-yearold in 2017. In 2019, he became the youngest two-time world champion.

Casey Lane of the Arizona Ridge Riders named General Manager of the Year in PBR Teams League

Peer-voted honor recognizes Lane’s leadership, consistency and impact in guiding Arizona to one of the league’s top-performing franchises.

Ariz. January 22, 2026 – Following the fourth PBR Teams season, the league today announced that the Arizona Ridge Riders’ Casey Lane has been voted General Manager of the Year.

Under Lane’s stewardship, the Ridge Riders have been

one of the league’s most consistent and top performers.

Ending the 2025 regular season with a 22-13 record for a franchise-best fourth-place finish, they have been one of two teams to qualify for Championship Day in three of the league’s four seasons.

In 2025, the team also set a franchise record for the highest riding percentage in a single season – going 82-for-175 (46.9%). Arizona also tied

the league record of most rides in a single event weekend –with 11 rides in Anaheim, California at a neutral site event.

“This is a real honor,” Lane said.

“I’ve taken so much professional joy in being involved with this growing league, other general managers, brand partners, the fans, and most of all the hard-working, courageous bull rider athletes

they come to see. Every single team GM is worthy of this recognition, and I’m flattered they chose me.”

“This peer-voted honor is so well-deserved and not surprising one bit,” said Shawn Colo, Executive Chairman, Teton Ridge. “Casey’s immense knowledge and experience in Western sports and deep industry relationships, paired with his authenticity and Madison Avenue street smarts, continues to deliver incredible results for the Ridge Riders.”

“Casey Lane is helping set the standard for what it means to be a General Manager in PBR Teams,” said Sean Gleason, CEO and Commissioner of PBR.
