“YELLOWSTONE Premieres on Paramount Network Wednesday June 20th Yellowstone," Paramount Network's new epic scripted dramatic series, will premiere on the network, Wednesday, June 20 at 9:00 pm, ET/PT. Starring world-renowned actor and Oscar(R)-winner Kevin Costner, who serves in the lead role, "Yellowstone" is written and directed by criticallyacclaimed, Oscar(R)-nominated screenwriter Taylor Sheridan (Wind River, Hell or High Water and Sicario). Sheridan recently won Best Director Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival for the universally-lauded film, Wind River.
"Yellowstone" was shot on location in Utah and Montana. Executive Producers for the series include John Linson, Art Linson, Taylor Sheridan and Kevin Costner. Ted Gold and Lauren Ruggerio are the executives in charge of production for Paramount Network.
The impressive cast list for "Yellowstone" includes Wes Bentley, Kelly Reilly, Luke Grimes, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, Dave Annable, Danny Huston, Gil Birmingham, Josh Lucas, Jefferson White, Gretchen Mol, Jill Hennessey, Patrick St. Esprit, Ian Bohen, Heather Hemmons, and Denim Richards. In "Yellowstone," Costner stars as John Dutton, who controls the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, under constant attack by those it borders - land developers, an Indian reservation, and America's first National Park. It is an intense study of a violent world far from media scrutiny - where land grabs make developers billions, and politicians are bought and sold by the world's largest oil and lumber corporations. Where drinking water poisoned by fracking wells and unsolved murders are not news: they are a consequence of living in the new frontier. It is the best and worst of America seen through the eyes of a family that represents both.

Dual Rey 1994-2018
Dual Rey, cutting’s #3 all-time leading sire, with NCHA earners of nearly $36 million, was euthanized on Monday at the Longmont, Colorado home of his owner and breeder, Linda Holmes. Dual Rey’s impact on the sport of cutting was well captured in the 2018
JUNE 2018
NCHA Super Stakes Open Finals, where nine of the Top 20 finalists were either sired by Dual Rey or one of his sons, or were out of one of his daughters. The list includes reserve champion Rollz Royce, by Dual Smart Rey, by Dual Rey; third-placed Rey Good Lookin, by Dual Rey; and fourth-placed Duramax Dually, by Dual Rey. In addition, Dual Reyish, out of Dual Rey daughter A Little Reylena, was the 2017 NCHA Futurity Open champion. By Dual Pep out of Nurse Rey ($65,587), by Wyoming Doc, Dual Rey was shown by Lloyd Cox, who also showed Nurse Rey, as well as many of her offspring for Linda Holmes and her sister, Gail Holmes. From his first crop (32 AQHA foals of 1999), Dual Rey lit the boards with TR Dual Rey, shown by Lloyd Cox to earn $291,111 and reserve championships of the NCHA Super Stakes and the NCHA Derby. TR Dual Rey would become a sire in his own right with NCHA earners of more than $3.7 million. Dual Rey’s second crop of foals included Horse of the Year Reys Dual Badger LTE $312,179 and A Smart Little Rey LTE $204,868, two out of 26 of his lifetime performers that have each earned over $200,000. From that crop on there was no stopping the Dual Reys, as performers and producers. His top earners include Special Nu Baby LTE $481,197 and Rey Down Sally LTE $404,170, and his 1,144 NCHA money earners have a near record average of $31,292. Dual Rey’s leading siring sons, in addition to TR Dual Rey, include Dual Smart Rey with over $4.3 million in offspring earnings; Reys Dual Badger with $3.3 million; and Halreycious with $2.2 million. And his prolific daughters include Miss Ella Rey, dam of nine NCHA money earners of $929,458 ($103,273 average).

The posse that goes after the Power crew: (from left) Special Deputy U.S. Marshal Kane Wootan, Graham County Deputy Martin Kempton, Graham County Sheriff Frank McBride and Deputy U.S. Marshal Frank Haynes. – ALL ILLUSTRATIONS BY BOB BOZE BELL –
A COLD RIDE INTO HELL Let’s track the distance and rough terrain that the four-man posse covers to get to the Power family cabin. This is not a stroll to a nearby corral. Taking off from Safford, Arizona, at 3 p.m., Feb 10, 1918, in Sheriff Frank McBride’s Model T and traveling over rough roads, the posse arrives in Klondyke at 6 p.m. They eat supper and then procure horses and two rifles from their host, Al Upchurch, before taking off on horseback at around 10 that evening. All the men wear heavy coats or mackinaws as the temperature usually falls into the 20s at the Galiuro Mountains during February. Kempton and Sheriff McBride carry their own rifles, while Wootan and Haynes use the
28
borrowed ones from Upchurch. Wootan leads the way, since he was in the area five years prior, although the sheriff has also been to Power Garden and Gold Mountain. The lawmen ride south for most of the night, until they finally see the cabin. They wait until daybreak—about 7:10 a.m.—to make their approach on foot. Some historians claim the Power posse members had been drinking because liquor bottles were later found on the trail. If true, this wouldn’t be the first time that firewater disrupted a raid (see debacles involving the James Gang, Maj. Marcus Reno, Ike Clanton and King Fisher, among others).
JUNE 2018
The Slackers in Kielberg Canyon Jeff Power is tending to a fire in his fireplace when he hears noises outside the cabin. Grabbing a rifle, Jeff steps outside. He hears someone yell, “Throw up your hands!” As Jeff moves his rifle to his right, shots ring out; he is hit in the chest. After a lull in the shooting, everyone in the cabin is now awake and manning the windows, not knowing who is attacking them. Shots ring out on both sides. Glass shards from the smashed windows wound both Power brothers. Within five minutes, 25 shots are exchanged. When the gunfire ends, Sheriff McBride lays dead with four bullet wounds. Both deputies have been killed. Jeff Power is writhing in pain with a mortal wound. Marshal Haynes flees up the hill, finds his horse and takes off for Klondyke. The gunfight is over. A manhunt is about to begin.
The lawmen picket their horses and stash heavy overclothes out of sight.
“They pretty soon give out the notion that they wasn’t to be fooled with.” —A neighbor of the Power boys
Who Shoots First?
Martin Kempton and Kane Wootan
Jeff Power with John Power
Frank Haynes and Frank McBride
Read about the Arizona Power Brothers ‘ redemption in True West’s July 2018 Issue.
The split between the four posse members—Wootan and Kempton on the south side of the cabin; Haynes and McBride on the north side—may have unhinged the operation. Forced to traverse a narrow space between a windbreak built several feet north of the house, the ranking lawmen, Haynes and McBride, are unable to get into position by the time they hear Wootan holler, “Throw up your hands.” As the U.S. Marshal and sheriff clear the corner of the house, they hear Wootan yell twice more, “Throw up your hands!” and see Jeff Power standing in the doorway, brandishing a Winchester. The sheriff remonstrates toward everyone, “Boys, boys, boys,” attempting to diffuse the tense situation. But then “four or five shots all come in a bunch” from the house, as Haynes later testifies. The Power brothers, Tom and John, will later claim Wootan fired first, hitting their father in the chest. If true, Wootan may have done so unintentionally. He was carrying a rifle he had borrowed from his brother-in-law Al Upchurch (who also lent the posse his horses), and the rifle may have had a hair trigger, unbeknownst to Wootan. The PRCA is recognized as the unsurpassed leader in sanctioning the sport of professional rodeo and hosts the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) – the ultimate championship for the cowboy. May 15, 2018 – Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – Board members discussed several topics related to NRHA-owned events during their May 2018 meeting. Among those topics was the opportunity to secure more dates for the NRHA Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship Show starting in 2019, as well as to shift the NRHA Derby up one week in the calendar.
New Opportunities for NRHA Futurity and Derby Dates recently announced plans to move their December event, which has followed the NRHA Futurity since the 1980s, to the Lazy E Arena starting in 2019. This date cancellation opened up a very rare and time-sensitive opportunity to expand the dates for the NRHA Futurity. Presented with an unusual offering, the board talked at length about many scenarios including pros and cons to the option. In the end, they were

excited about the potential. “Doors like this don’t open very often, so we took a good, hard look at how this could help us further solidify the event for the future. What could we do to help exhibitors, owners and fans have a better experience? What possibilities could we explore that we can’t today because we just don’t have enough days or hours in those days? Let’s take this opportunity and see what we can make of it for the sport

and the horse,” said NRHA President Mike Deer. NRHA Vice President Mike Hancock continued, “Since moving the Futurity to Oklahoma City, the schedule, number of entries, number horses and other needs have grown. We’ve not had the opportunity to expand the schedule based upon the fact that we were sandwiched in between two events. This opportunity allows us to have a clean canvas to develop the schedule that suits our expanded needs better than ever. Our aged events committee will now take this opportunity to fill in the blanks on what the schedule would look like.” The date change can help NRHA address the following needs and maximize the event: More time for general move-in More time to settle in horses after travel More time to familiarize horses with the facility prior to showing Starting the show later (i.e. several days later, not on Thanksgiving) More down time between go rounds More flexibility to adjust the schedule to avoid over-booked, long days Options to avoid class cross-over in the schedule More alternatives for fun, social parties and events that are a part of the NRHA Futurity experience More time for facility clean up before it is released to NRHA. The NRHA Aged Events Committee will consider these concerns and create a recommended schedule for the board to review at an upcoming meeting. The available 2019 dates, which include move-in days, are listed below.
JUNE 2018
NRHA Derby Dates In a similar situation, the week prior to the NRHA Derby became available starting in 2019. The board agreed to shift since it will separate the show further from the July 4 holiday. In addition, July is historically the hottest month in Oklahoma, so a move earlier in the year may help in that regard. The shift also allows an extra day to be used as needed for the best schedule possible.

Dr. James Morgan, DVM NRHA Million Dollar Rider With a rich tradition of athletic horses, talented riders and successful owners, the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) celebrates each opportunity to highlight the hard work and accomplishments of its members. After a successful trip to the National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) in Katy, Texas, Dr. James Morgan, DVM crossed a monumental milestone and is unofficially an NRHA Million Dollar Rider. Dr. Morgan earned his first official paycheck at the 1974 NRHA Futurity for an amount of $114.60. Since then, he has ridden on to win the NRHA Level (L)4 Non Pro Futurity in 1984-86 and has eight reserve championships within the same division. He furthered his NRHA Lifetime Earnings (LTE) through finals appearances at many other shows such as the All American Quarter Horse Congress, NRHA Derby and NRBC. Adding to this impressive resume, Dr. Morgan is an NRHA Lifetime Member, Hall of Fame Member, past-member of the NRHA Board of Directors and an NRHA Judge. He has participated in every industry event imaginable, all while continuing his work as a veterinarian.
Dr. Morgan NRHA Million Dollar Rider
During NRBC, Dr. Morgan rode and qualified two horses to the Non Pro Classic Finals that helped him cross this historic milestone. Shiney Workboots (Smart And Shiney x Reminic At Work) earned a third place finish in the Prime Time division and tied for fourth in the L4 with a score of 219. Atop Reiningwiththestars (Spooks Gotta Whiz x Wimpys Memorabilia), Dr. Morgan placed in the top 20 in the Prime Time and top 30 in the L4. At the age of 72, Dr. Morgan is the oldest person to ever reach the NRHA Million Dollar Rider mark and is only the third non pro rider to reach this milestone. “All this time, I’ve been planning on this run here,” said Dr. Morgan when describing how it felt to achieve this long-awaited goal. The years of planning and preparation came down to one run, and it worked out perfectly—earning the pair enough money to deem Dr. Morgan an NRHA Million Dollar Rider.

The primary purpose of The Scottsdale Tourism Study Lodging Report is to provide market information for the tourism, retail, and hospitality operations within the study area. The study looks specifically at trends in local transient occupancy tax (bed tax) collection, room inventory, average room rates, occupancy rates and other factors relating to lodging trends. The report provide information to elected officials, city management, the general public, and private-sector entities regarding the tourism and hospitality markets. Much of the information contained
Scottsdale Tourism Study Lodging Report
in the Lodging Statistics study is based on tax collection figures. Bed tax collection figures are used because they are important and consistently tracked and readily available but it is important to remember these three points: The tax receipt figures shown for each month reflect actual sales tax and bed tax collections during the previous month. There is a lag of one month between sales activity and
receipts. The data in this report (with the exception of room stock figures) is based primarily on properties located within the City of Scottsdale. With the exception of room stock data, no information is available for properties that lie just outside the corporate limits of the City of Scottsdale and the Town of Paradise Valley. It may be reasonable to assume the data for these properties
would be very similar to similar properties in the market area, but no projections are made as part of this report.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Scottsdale’s bed tax revenues totaled $18,128,683 in 2016, up 5.6 percent from 2015. The Scottsdale market area has grown by nearly 715 rooms since 2007. In the past 10 years, the bed tax has generated over $125 million in revenue for the City of Scottsdale. Hotel/motel sales tax revenues for the City of Scottsdale in 2016 rose 3.8 percent from 2015 with $9,425,931 in collections. Annual occupancy for the Scottsdale market area in 2016 was 68.1 percent, up from 67.7 percent in 2015. The average room rate for Scottsdale market area hotels in 2016 was $188.29, an increase from the 2015 average of $184.85 per room. The percentage of room revenue to total hotel revenues for the City of Scottsdale in 2016 was 62.9 percent.
NRHA Derby Named a Top AQHA Show for 2017 Congratulations on being named one of the Top AQHA Shows of 2017! We know the hard work, long hours and sacrifices your show team has given in making the NRHA Derby a successful event! We commend you! New this year, rankings for the top shows were calculated by dividing the total number of entries for each event by the event’s total number of show numbers; thus ranking by the average number of entries per judge. The show committee felt this change was a more accurate way of ranking, rather than the total number of entries as some events are not able to host as many individual show numbers as others.show is mentioned! Thank you for hosting AQHA exhibitors and making them feel welcome at your show. You are the face of AQHA and have done an excellent job! 38

Reading a Feed Tag: Part 2
Jyme L. Nichols Director of Technical Services Bluebonnet Feeds – Ardmore, OK Last month we discussed the first steps to take when reading a feed tag which included evaluating protein, amino acids, fat, fiber, and the list of major feed ingredients. We also touched on the differences between least-cost formulations, open labels and locked formulas. This month we will turn our focus to vitamins and minerals. The first minerals to evaluate are calcium and phosphorus. They will be the next items listed on the guaranteed analysis after protein, fat, and fiber. Calcium will be listed with both a minimum and a maximum percentage guarantee while phosphorus is listed with only a minimum percentage guarantee. Most of the calcium within the horse’s body is located in the bones and teeth. Calcium is responsible for the structural components of the bones and teeth but also has other functions such as muscle contraction and blood coagulation. It is critical that calcium levels in the blood remain consistent because if there is not enough calcium in the diet the body will pull calcium from the bones. Phosphorus is also a major component of the skeletal structure of horses and is required for several other functions in the body. Phosphorus competes with calcium for absorption in the small intestine. As phosphorus levels increase in the diet the absorption rate of calcium decreases. It is this reason that the ratio of the two minerals is important. The ideal calcium to phosphorus ratio is 2:1, but ratios in excess of 5:1 have been reported safe as long as the diet contains appropriate levels of phosphorus. Horses that are fed very large volumes of grain-based feeds such as oats or wheat bran are at higher risk of having an inverted calcium to phosphorus ratio which may cause skeletal abnormalities. It is important to remember that the total diet, including forage, must be taken into consideration. Lactating mares and growing horses have the highest requirements for calcium and phosphorus. Magnesium and potassium are important because they are involved in skeletal structure and muscle. Magnesium and potassium are electrolytes which are responsible for maintaining water balance, appropriate pH levels in blood, and muscle function. Magnesium deficiency may result in nervousness, muscle tremors, and ataxia. Potassium levels are critical for horses with hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HYPP); management practices include restricting the amount of potassium fed to these horses. Copper is a micro-mineral measured in parts per million (ppm). Copper is needed in the body for creation and maintenance of elastic connective tissue. Research has shown that just 6 months of feeding low copper levels may result in limb deformities, epiphysitis, and OCD’s. Zinc is another micro-mineral that, when fed in deficient amounts, may result in abnormalities such as poor appetite, reduced growth rate, and hair loss. Horses seem to be tolerant of high levels of both copper and zinc, but extreme over-supplementation is not recommended. Manganese is the third micro-mineral that influences structural integrity, and is essential for synthesis of the chondroitin sulfate necessary in cartilage formation. All three of these minerals may be provided in an inorganic form (i.e. zinc oxide) or an organic form (i.e. zinc amino acid chelate). Chelated forms of these microminerals are more easily absorbed and utilized by the body (up to 400% better absorption, according to research). If supplemental copper, zinc, or manganese are added to a feed, the particular form used will be identified in the ingredient listing on the feed tag. Vitamins A, D, and E are often guaranteed on a feed tag. Vitamin A is responsible for its role in night vision, therefore night blindness is a classical symptom of Vitamin A deficiency. However, since vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin it may accumulate in the body when fed in excess. Vitamin A fed at extremely high levels has been reported to cause bone fragility as well as structural and functional abnormalities in the embryo and fetus. Vitamin D plays an important role in calcium levels in the body. It is responsible for calcium absorption in the intestines and mobilizing calcium from the bones when needed. Horses are capable of converting sunlight into vitamin D, therefore there have not been any reports, to date, of vitamin D deficiency in horses that are exposed to sunlight. Vitamin E is most notable as a biological antioxidant. According to the National Research Council, Vitamin E does not appear to be toxic to horses when fed at high levels, however other species have reported negative effects at high levels so extreme over-supplementation is not recommended. Vitamin E is especially important for lactating mares and for growing horses; some research has reported muscular dystrophy in foals whose dams were eating a diet deficient in vitamin E. Vitamin E is also thought to play an important role in exercising horses and may have beneficial effects in horses with PSSM. Equine nutrition is complex and ever-changing. It is a science. Nutritionists, researchers, and feed manufactures continue to challenge past practices in an effort to improve what we already know. Education is power, we can never know too much, and it is the responsibility of each horse owner to provide the best nutrition possible in the given circumstance. Stay tuned for next month’s column, where we will discuss some less common nutrients that may be guaranteed on a feed tag such as B-vitamins, probiotics, and digestive enzymes. JUNE 2018

Scottsdale Visitors Executive Summary Scottsdale hosted an estimated 4.5 million overnight U.S. visitors and 4.3 million day trip visitors in 2016. These U.S. visitors, through their local spending, created an annual economic impact of $2.3 billion in the City of Scottsdale. A typical domestic overnight traveler to Scottsdale spends approximately $272 and a typical day trip visi- tor spends $66, according to the Scottsdale 2016 Visitor Research by Longwoods International. Overnight visitors stay an average of 4.1 nights in Scottsdale and have an average party size of 2.9 people. The top ten activities for Scottsdale visitors are (in order): shopping, dining, swimming, casinos, visiting his- toric sites and parks, hiking, night clubs, art galleries, golf and museums. The total number of visitornights spent in hotels in Scottsdale in 2016 was 3.1 million. An additional 1.4 mil- lion visitors stayed overnight in Scottsdale in
other types of accommodations. About 68 percent of overnight visitors stay in a resort, hotel or motel in Scottsdale. The average occupan- cy rate for market area hotels in 2016 was 68.1 percent, up from 67.7 percent in 2015 and 67.0 in 2014. Tourists have a significant impact on tax revenues to the city. Privilege tax collections attributable to visi- tors in 2016/17 are estimated at $41.9 million, including bed taxes. An additional $1.8 million per year in taxes are generated by employees in the hospitality industry living in Scottsdale. Scottsdale received a fiscal return of about $1.30 from visitors, meaning that for every $1 of municipal ser- vice costs attributable to visitors, they received $1.30 in revenues. This calculation took a broad overall view of bed and sales tax collections in order to draw assumptions related to the fiscal contribution of visi- tors.

Havanah Goodtime Named Dam of Distinction
Havanah Goodtime becomes the 54th and youngest-ever Dam of Distinction. The young broodmare Havanah Goodtime, who has only two race starters, has earned the title of AQHA Dam of Distinction. The 2010 mare was bred and is owned by American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame member Bobby D. Cox of Fort Worth, Texas. She is by Ivory James and out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Jess Celebrating. Her single race start was a winning effort, and she retired with earnings of $10,290. The award recognizes the accomplishments of racing broodmares. To qualify for the award, a mare must meet one or more of the following criteria: • Dams that produced two or more individual AQHA racing champions • Dams that produced at least three individual Grade 1 stakes winners • Dams that produced at least two foals ranked in the top-10 money earners of any particular year, as of December 31 of that year, and two G1 stakes winners

JUNE 2018
• Dams that produced at least three foals that were in the top-10 money earners of any particular year, as of December 31 of that year. When the award was created, a grandfather clause also allowed mares that had produced at least three individual stakes winners prior to 1983, and those wins were the equivalent of a G1-quality race, to be accepted. Havanah Goodtime accomplished the title by producing only two foals, both of whom were ranked in the top-10 money earners and both are Grade 1 stakes winners. She is both the youngest mare to earn the title and the first mare to earn the title so quickly; previous winners had at least four foals. Her first foal, Duponte, a son of American Runaway, won the 2016 Heritage Place Futurity (G1) and earned $921,237 in his race career. He is the sport’s reigning champion 3-year-old colt. Her second foal, Nymeria, a filly by Bigtime Favorite, won the 2017 Heritage Place Futurity (G1) and to date has earned $495,147 in her career. Her third foal, Sunnysyde, by Heza Fast Dash, is a 2-year-old this year. Havanah Goodtime is the 54th mare to earn this title.

So, she used her platform to spread encouragement to perform kind deeds all across the country and wrote about them in a monthly article in this very newspaper - The Bridle & Bit! It is appropriate that I introduce the 2018 Gilbert Days Rodeo Royalty Court and thank them for their good deeds. These kind hearted Cowgirls are active members of 4-H and just a sampling of kind deeds they did this month was to bring dozens of delicious homemade sugar cookies to the Gilbert Rodeo awards banquet and they volunteered at the Queen Creek Roots N Boots Rodeo to pick up trash and help at the Special Kids Rodeo.

Secretaries Perdue and Zinke Join Forces to Combat 2018 Wildfire Season (Washington, D.C., May 10, 2018) – Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke today hosted a fire briefing for Members of Congress at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to hear the forecast for this year’s wildfire season. Following the meeting, the secretaries sent a memorandum to wildland fire leadership highlighting the importance of inter-departmental collaboration to increase firefighter, public, and community safety as the 2018 wildfire season approaches. The 2017 wildfire season was one of the most challenging years on record, stressing the need for the USDA and the Department of the Interior to work together in combating this year’s fires. “As we begin this year’s fire season, we want to remind everyone that the protection of firefighters and public safety is the

single highest priority in every fire management activity and decision that we make,” Perdue and Zinke said. “Last year we lost 14 wildland firefighters who sacrificed their own lives to protect the lives of others and that is something we hope to prevent this year.” “Additionally, both Departments will continue to collaborate to ensure all firefighting assets are being used in an efficient and effective manner. It is essential that firefighters have the right tools, resources, and flexibility to allow them to do their jobs safely. As we explore opportunities to improve efficiencies, we will look to integrate technology, such as the use of unmanned aircraft systems, into our operations and capitalize on other advancements to promote firefighter safety, support planning, and protect communities.”

Wild horses and burros have routinely been adopted for important tasks such as patrolling the border and local policing. Read stories from recent wild horse and burro adopters and purchasers on the BLM’s Flickr page. Wild horses and burros can still be adopted or purchased in-person at one of the nearly 70 BLMhosted events across the country this year or by visiting one of 17 wild horse and burro off-range corrals. Event locations and dates are subject to change. Please contact the National Wild Horse and Burro Information Center at 866-468-7826 or wildhorse@blm. gov for the most up-to-date information. Potential adopters and purchasers should visit the BLM website to learn more about the rules and requirements for adopting or purchasing a wild horse or burro. To get started visit the BLM wild horse and burro adoption and sales web pages at: https://on.doi. gov/2fSrzJi. Today’s announcements today are part of the BLM’s effort to confront a growing overpopulation of wild horses and burros on public rangelands and in taxpayer-funded off-range facilities. As of March 1, 2018, the wild horse and burro population on public lands was estimated at 82,000 animals, which is more than triple the number that public lands can support along with other legally mandated land uses. “Finding good homes for horses and burros is a top priority for the BLM as we strive to protect the health of these animals,” Steed said.

H-2A Agricultural Worker Visa Modernization Joint Cabinet Statement (Washington, D.C., May 24, 2018) — When President Trump addressed the American Farm Bureau Federation in January of this year, he reminded the audience that his commitment to our farmers has been clear since the day his Administration began: “From that day on, we have been working every day to deliver for America’s farmers just as they work every single day to deliver for us.” In keeping with that commitment, our Departments are working in coordination to propose streamlining, simplifying, and improving the H-2A temporary agricultural visa program – reducing cumbersome bureaucracy and ensuring adequate protections for U.S. workers. The Trump Administration is committed to modernizing the H-2A visa program rules in a way that is responsive to stakeholder concerns and that deepens our confidence in the program as a source of legal and verified labor for agriculture – while also reinforcing the program’s strong employment and wage protections for the American workforce. In addition, by improving the H-2A visa program and substantially reducing its complexity, the Administration also plans to incentivize farmers’ use of the E-Verify program to ensure their workforce is authorized to work in the United States. As the agencies tasked with administering or facilitating the H-2A visa program, and thus closest to farmer and labor stakeholders, the Departments of State, Agriculture, Labor, and Homeland Security are embarking on a process to modernize the H-2A visa program by clarifying and improving the regulations governing the program. We look forward to delivering a more responsive program soon. #

Founding APHA member Junior Robertson passes APHA Past President Junior Robertson of Waurika, Oklahoma, died May 20, 2018, at age 87. Junior was a founding member of the American Paint Stock Horse Association, which later gave rise to APHA, and was among the first inductees to APHA’s Hall of Fame in 2012. Born September 2, 1930, in Wirt, Oklahoma, to Lee Morgan and Leola Sally Robertson, Lee “Junior” Robertson was the baby of his family. He married Bennie Ruth Bennett on July 29, 1950, and the couple had five children. A gold-card carrying member of the Rodeo Cowboy Association, Junior was a top hand at roping and even participated as part of a 1958 U.S. exhibition rodeo team with Gene Autry in Havana, Cuba. Athletic, flashy horses became his calling card, and his played a leading role in fostering the development of APHA. Among his two most impactful horses were Wahoo King and Mister J. Bar,

both of whom were inducted into the APHA Hall of Fame. Junior served as APHA president in 1976 and 1977. “Junior was not a perfect man—as none of us are—but he left a huge footprint in the lives of all who knew him. He never said a bad word about another man, he lived life with passion and taught his children to love the Lord, to live life without regret— letting go of the past—and to tell a good story because laughing is good for the soul … and one other thing— to always have a dog at your side,” daughter Loyce Lee Alligood wrote.

Arizona Mounted Shooting
Kenda Lenseigne - Multiple World & National Champion Mounted Shooter By Vito 2 Guns I recently had the opportunity to interview Kenda Lenseigne, our own Arizona multiple time world champion and numerous national championship holder. Among the many of her championships are 2018 Overall National Championship, 2017 Overall World Champion Cowgirl, 2017 Overall Western US Champion Cowgirl, 2017 Overall National Championship Cowgirl, 2014 Overall World Champion Cowgirl. Kenda resides right here in Arizona and trains many successful shooters, from beginners to advanced shooters that just need that extra something to push them to their next goal. V2G- Kenda, what was it that sparked your interest in Cowboy Mounted Shooting and when did you start. KL-I was introduced to mounted shooting in 1998 when I was encouraged to try the sport during a demo at a western festival in Southern California. The sport was new at the time but looked like a lot of fun and something that would appeal to me considering the timed aspect. I had previously competed in judged events and was ready to move to something less "political" in terms of my score being based on the clock instead of the opinion of a judge; that plus the fact that its fast paced and new competitors start with a level playing field (the CMSA class system*). I also enjoyed the fact that it really didn't matter that I didn't have the $100k horse, I had to do my part and hit my targets, so there's a considerable amount of team work between horse and rider that needs to occur to be successful. V2G - If you could give anyone thinking of getting involved in Mounted Shooting what would you tell them? KL- Do your homework, align yourself with a trainer who you have observed, see how they treat their horses, how their students 82
KENDA LENSEIGNE perform and how well they manage their business. A good trainer will be able to save you a lot of time and frustration when it comes to starting a horse on gunfire, purchasing equipment, explaining the rules, etc. V2G - How do you prepare for a big competition mentally and how do you stay on top of the game after all these years? KL- I train most days of the week with dry firing drills to strengthen the fundamentals of both course work with my horse and gun handling for myself. On "game day", I prepare mentally using a visualization and mental rehearsal method, meaning, rehearsing in my mind the outcome
that I want, every stride and every shot are planned in my mind before I enter the arena. This helps keep me focused and provides a sense of confidence even when the pressure of competition is high. V2G- What do feel was your biggest accomplishment? KL- Accolades and titles aside, my biggest accomplishment has been starting and training not only one, but two Overall World Champion horses. In 2009 I won the High Overall at the World Championship on my horse "Lieutenant Justin", as the only woman to have ever claimed this title. Now, 9 years later, I am still the only one. I won the World title again in 2014 on Justin and
JUNE 2018
in 2017 on my mare Sparky. It’s my philosophy that we are only as good as the horse we are riding, so putting in the time and effort to establish the partnership with my horses is something that helps define who I am, and where I feel most accomplished. V2G- Where do you see the sport in 5-10 years? KL - Having been a mounted shooting competitor for 20 years, I have seen it evolve first hand from a backyard sport to what it is now, recognized globally across the US, Canada and into Europe. Part of that expansion is due to national sponsors coming on board, with the latest growth spurt being several years ago when AQHA (American Quarter Horse Association) added Cowboy Mounted Shooting as an alliance partner, opening a whole new perspective on the sport within the equine industry. Even though it gets bigger each year, there is still a grass roots feel to the events, where folks’ welcome new shooters and do their best to help people get started. Mounted Shooting is a lifestyle, where entire families can all attend the same event and compete within their own divisions, making it appealing for all. With that, I see it continuing to grow as the years go on. Kenda offers training for horses and group lessons every Tuesday at Ben Avery Mounted Shooting Facility and has clinics once a month at the same location. For those that are interested in giving it a shot (no pun intended) please contact Kenda at www. kendalenseigne.com if you are interested in training with her. Kenda’s training program is second to none. Kenda has also teamed up with Guns Plus in Surprise Arizona to put on a monthly Clean Shooter Jackpot. These are fun no stress events, shoot all your targets take home some cash it’s as simple as that! Please see their Facebook Page appropriately named Clean Shooter Jackpot Group for updates on events and clinics.

Trump Administration Stands Behind Ag Producers By Secretary Sonny Perdue Throughout my travels, I’ve heard from the people living in rural America about what they want out of this administration: a boost in the economy, a decrease in burdensome regulations, an increase in trade and a farm bill that works for America’s agriculture community. My message to rural America is always the same: President Trump hears you and is working to make your life better. In the last 16 months, the policies of the Trump administration have proven his commitment to rural America and the American farmer. His pro-growth policies are fueling the economy. We’ve seen strong farm exports, illustrating worldwide demand. The agriculture community is already seeing benefits from the president’s historic tax cuts and reforms. Farmers, ranchers and producers are now able to keep more of what they earn and can reinvest in their operations. The critical changes to the death tax will exempt the majority of family farms. It’s an old unfunny joke that farmers live cash poor but die land rich, and that is
something we want to change. For far too long rural America has struggled under the weight of burdensome regulations, written by bureaucrats behind desks in Washington. The Trump administration has been eliminating these regulations at a record pace, slashing 22 existing regulations for every new one that comes on the books. This administration has shown its commitment to renewing prosperity and restoring opportunity across America. While we have made great strides, there is still work to be done. There’s a good bit of anxiety out there in the farmland with regard to trade. President Trump knows that America’s farmers, ranchers, foresters and producers are the ones that feed, fuel and clothe the nation and the rest of the world. For decades China has not played by the rules. China has maintained unwarranted barriers and tradedistorting policies harming U.S. agricultural products, just like it has with many other U.S. goods. By finally standing up to China, this administration is seeking better market access for our farmers.

Throwback Thursday: Yakima Canutt Yakima Canutt, one of the pioneers of rodeo a century ago, also blazed trails as a Hollywood stunt man and movie second-unit director. His four decades of work in the movie industry were recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and Canutt received an honorary Academy Award in 1966 for his achievements as a stunt man and for developing safety devices that changed the profession. Enos Edward Canutt was born
in the Snake River Valley of Washington state in 1895. After competing in the 1914 Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up, he was misidentified as being from the Yakima region of Washington, and the nickname stuck. Friends later simply called him “Yak.” He won the World’s Champion All-Around Cowboy title at the 1917 Pendleton Round-Up, and won the saddle bronc riding there in 1917, 1919 and 1923. He won

the saddle bronc riding in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1921-23, while also excelling in steer wrestling. He was the first to ride Tipperary, who had thrown about 80 cowboys. Canutt was inducted into the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Okla. His film career began in silent movies, and he was hurt twice while doubling for Clark Gable. He was often the stunt double for John Wayne, and they pioneered stunt and screen fighting techniques still used today. Most of Wayne’s on-screen persona was taken from Canutt. In the book, John Wayne’s America, by Garry Wills, Wayne said, “I spent weeks studying the way Yakima Canutt walked and talked. He was a real cowhand.” Canutt famously did the stunt in the 1939 movie, “Stagecoach,” where he leaped at full gallop from his horse to the six-horse team pulling the stagecoach, then dropped down below the lead horse, before the horses and stagecoach ran over him. Director Steven Spielberg paid homage to Canutt by recreating the stunt with Terry Leonard doubling for Harrison Ford in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” in 1981. Canutt spent two years creating the chariot race in 1959’s “BenHur” and taught Charlton Heston how to drive a chariot. In the Los Angeles Times obituary about the 90-year-old Canutt’s death in 1986, Heston credited Canutt with changing stunting from “a ragtag” occupation into a respectable part of the motion picture industry.

Vold horses arrive at ProRodeo Hall of Fame COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs will be welcoming horses from the Harry Vold Rodeo Company this summer for the Rodeo Livestock Exhibit. The horses arrived the afternoon of May 23, at the Hall of Fame. Kirsten Vold, the daughter of the late Harry Vold, a ProRodeo Hall of Fame stock contractor, brought Beaver Tail. Beaver Tail gave birth May 15 to a colt foal. With the baby on the property, the ProRodeo Hall of Fame will be running a “Name the Colt” contest with the museum guests this summer to name the newborn horse. Beaver Tail has been bucked as a bareback and saddle bronc horse and bucked off several cowboys at large rodeos including Prescott, Ariz., and Cheyenne, Wyo. Beaver Tail’s first colt, 6V Pillow Talk, became a three-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo participant. Vold also brought Painted Fling, whose sire is Painted Valley, the 2010 PRCA Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year. Painted Fling will turn 5 years old in August and has never been bucked. His dam is a horse cloned from another Vold horse – Spring Fling. “We are excited to have a mare,

colt and stallion for this year’s Rodeo Livestock Exhibit,” said Kent Sturman, director of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy. “This is a different angle than the standard retired bucking horses we’ve had in the past, as these animals will allow us the opportunity to showcase the breeding side of the bucking stock industry and exhibit a future bucking horse. “Guests will learn about the importance of bloodlines and how breeding certain animals produces the best stock available. As an added educational piece, since Painted Fling is a product of a cloned mare, we can pass along some knowledge about cloning and how it is becoming a popular and important aspect of the bucking horse breeding programs of many stock contractors. We thank Vold Rodeo Company for supporting this exhibit and loaning us these animals for the summer.”

“I engaged Seven Peaks Fence and Barn to design and install a large shelter for our livestock. I’m an engineer so I am very particular about the quality of work. They did and excellent job, with proper foundations, laser leveling, and the neatest welding I’ve ever seen- if I was building a hot rod they’d be the ones to do all the welding for me, they are real craftsman. They are good mannered, communicated well and finished on time. No mess, no smoking no radios, all good. Toby Duffell Mesa, Arizona.

BLM may offer $1,000 to people who adopt wild horses By: SCOTT SONNER, Associated Press
RENO, Nev. (AP) - U.S. land managers are proposing offering $1,000 to anyone willing to adopt wild horses gathered from public lands to alleviate a backlog of mustangs in government corals and shrink what they say are badly overpopulated herds across the West. Overwhelmed by what it characterizes as a $1 billion problem, the Bureau of Land Management proposed the novel approach to Congress on Thursday and also made requests to sterilize, euthanize or sell for slaughter tens of thousands of animals. Under any scenario, the agency plans to use short-term fertility control on the horses whose population it expects to grow to 100,000 by 2019. But it also recommends any approach include permanent sterilization, something most horse advocates find as objectionable as lifting current congressional prohibitions on selling the horses for
96
slaughter. The $1,000 adoption bonus is included in the four management alternatives the agency is mulling as it seeks a way to address what it admits is a costly, difficult challenge. “Conflict levels are often high and the program is controversial and politically sensitive,” the agency said. The head of one of the nation’s largest horse protection groups immediately condemned the package of alternatives as “a roadmap for destruction of America’s wild freeroaming horses and burros.” “BLM, the agency whose terrible mismanagement of this program has brought us to this place, is now proposing more bad ideas, including mass roundup and slaughter to cover for their incompetence,” said Suzanne Roy, executive director of the American Wild Horse Campaign. Laura Leigh, president of the Wild Horse Education horse pro-
tection advocacy group, said the report ignores the impact of cattle and sheep grazing on public rangeland and relies heavily on recommendations made at a meeting in Salt Lake City last year organized by livestock interests. “The agency repeatedly scapegoats” the horses while “ignoring extreme deficits within the much larger livestock grazing program, diverting personnel from the (horse program) to placate other concerns, prioritizing existing funding based on political pressure not rangeland needs,” she said Friday. The federal agency estimates 83,000 wild horse and burros were roaming public rangelands in 10 western states last year - more than three times the 26,715 animals the agency says the land can sustain. “As currently managed, by the summer of 2019, there will likely be well over 100,000 wild horses on BLM-managed land, with up to 20,000 more the year after,” said the agency, which says it has the capability to round up about 20,000 animals annually. Last year, the agency spent nearly 60 percent of its $81 million budget on animals that have been removed from the range and estimates “the cost of caring for the 46,000 un-adopted and unsold animals currently in holding will top $1 billion over their lifetime.” Free adoptions to qualified owners often topped 9,000 annually in the early 1990s, but have fallen to 3,000 or fewer in recent years. A new incentive program offer-
JUNE 2018
ing providers $1,000 at the point of adoption “would save money for the taxpayer and the BLM program in the first year of implementation alone,” the agency said. “Over a period of 25 years, holding that same animal in an off-range corral would have cost the taxpayers nearly $46,000.” Ranchers whose livestock compete with the horses for forage praised the agency for developing a range of options to save taxpayers money and better protect rangeland for wildlife, including the imperiled sage grouse. “We have been in a stalemate on this issue for years in Congress and the result of that stalemate is unhealthy horses, degraded resources on the range and program costs that are spiraling out of control,” said Ethan Lane, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s executive director for federal lands. His group believes lifting current congressional prohibitions on the sale of horses for slaughter “would be the quickest route to a healthy population on the range,” Lane said. He said paying people to adopt horses also would be “money well spent.” The federal agency said it will continue to use short-term fertility control vaccines to slow population growth but that “permanent sterilization techniques would be a more effective long-term solution.” “Under all options, the BLM will utilize permanent sterilization techniques to take advantage of this fact.”

World Champion Costa out for season COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Reigning PRCA Tie-Down Roping World Champion Marcos Costa will not have a repeat performance in 2018. Costa had surgery on his right knee April 26 and is expected to be sidelined for up to seven months. “I was hurt for two years and I decided to stop and get this taken care of now, so I can come back next year,” said Costa, 27. “I tore my ACL and the medial and lateral meniscus, and I also had scar tissue. I was going to have to stop sometime and have this surgery and I decided to stop this year and have it done.” This was the fifth time Costa has had right knee surgery since 2011. A year ago, Costa made history becoming the first native Brazilian to win a tie-down roping world title. Costa reached the top of the PRCA podium by earning

Actress/advocate Bo Derek joins Del Mar Thoroughbred Club Bo Derek, the film and television actress, longtime horsewoman and advocate for multiple worthy causes, has agreed to join the board of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, it has been announced Derek, a staunch horse welfare proponent who used her role as a commissioner of the California Horse Racing Board between 2008 and 2015 to enhance safety and animal rights in the Thoroughbred industry, will attend her first DMTC board meeting the day after Del Mar opens its 79th summer season on Wednesday, July 18. “We are absolutely delighted to have a woman of Bo’s background and stature join us at Del Mar,” said DMTC’s CEO Joe Harper. “She brings a lifetime of knowledge and a world of care and concern for the horse with her and that puts her right in line with our priorities here. She’ll be a wonderful addition to our leadership ranks.” Derek will join Harper and seven other members on the DMTC board, which is chaired by business executive and horse owner David Batchelder. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has overseen racing at the scenic seaside track just north of San Diego since 1970. “I am very happy to be joining the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club,” Derek said. “They are my favorite people in horse racing and I’m glad to join in as they continue to elevate the sport that I love.” California native Derek, who currently resides on a farm in Santa Ynez she shares with her longtime partner, actor John Corbett, and a string of Lusitano and Andalusian horses, became an international sensation when she was one of the stars of the hit romantic comedy “10” in 1979. Subsequently, she acted in dozens of feature films and television shows, made time to advocate for a series of personal and professional causes (notably those involving animals and wounded veterans) and opened a line of pet care products called “Bo Derek Pet Care.” The center of her focus often came back to horses, as might be expected of a horse lover and riding enthusiast since childhood. She became a spokesperson for the Animal Welfare Institute’s campaign to end horse slaughter through passage of 100
Bo Derek, the film and television actress, longtime horsewoman and advocate for multiple worthy causes, has agreed to join the board of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club Photo: Benoit federal and state legislation. In 2002 she published her autobiography entitled “Riding Lessons: Everything That Matters in Life I Learned from Horses.” During her years on the California Horse Racing Board, she was instrumental in several horse-friendly changes and programs, key among them adjustments to jockey riding crops and their use. In 2009 she worked with the riders and Del Mar Thoroughbred Club to introduce softer, padded riding crops at the track that took the sting out of their use. In 2014 she headed a CHRB committee that established a rule to limit the number of times the riding crop could be used during a race. In both cases, the changes have become part of standard procedure for jockeys in the state. Besides her work in the Thoroughbred industry, Derek has carved out a special niche for the nation’s veterans and has earned awards and honors from the Veteran’s Administration for her work with disabled veterans. The Special Forces Association threw her a special salute by naming her an honorary Green Beret. Additionally, she served as a Trustee of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, as Special Envoy of the Secretary of State for Wildlife Trafficking and is currently a board member of WildAid, a group that works to reduce the use of wildlife products. Further, she also is involved with several animal rights organizations. Del Mar’s 36-day summer season runs from July 18 to September 3.
The Number One Reason Equestrian’s Stop Riding The number one reason equestrians stop riding their horses is back pain. Bulging of a spinal disc with nerve impingement, caused by spinal stenosis. is the number one culprit. Spinal stenosis means narrowing of an opening of the spine where the nerve and spinal chord are located. Spinal stenosis is a joint biomechanical problem and can occur from trauma. Equestrian’s sometimes give up riding because they can’t find relief from the pain. Correcting joint biomechanical problems and spinal stenosis can help them get back in the saddle. Spinal stenosis is epidemic and the leading cause of back surgeries in America today. If you have pain and discomfort that is preventing you from riding, chances are you have some degree of spinal stenosis. The good news is, spinal stenosis can be corrected if treated early on! Spinal Stenosis occurs when the bones of the spine move backwards (retrolisthesis), caused from excessive spinal flexion movements( bending over) or trauma. Spinal bones in retrolisthesis will cause; narrowing of the openings of the spine (the spinal canal and intervertebral foramina), disc bulging, nerve impingement, inflammation, and pain that can radiate down the arms or legs. Spinal stenosis is corrected by lifting the spinal bone, back onto the disc and into the correct anatomical position. The spinal stenosis adjusting technique is gentle, with no twisting of the neck and back, and done with calculated precision using engineering principles to determine the plane of correction. The typical spinal stenosis case is usually 90-120 days of treatment and usually consists of specific correction techniques based X-ray analysis using engineering principles, spinal stenosis therapies and spinal extension exercises. The extension exercises assist in keeping the spine in alignment after the spinal correction is completed. An example of a spinal extension

Spinal Extension Exercises done on a ball If you believe you, or a loved one might have spinal stenosis you should be evaluated ASAP. There comes a time when the spinal joints may be too worn out to recover from spinal stenosis trauma. I encourage you to get this health issue corrected, get back in the saddle, and enjoy your horse for a very long time! McBride Wins first NCFSR
TORRINGTON, Wyo. – After more than 20 years of ProRodeo competition, Will McBride won his first National Circuit Finals Steer Roping, April 29. “It’s the biggest roping I’ve ever won,” McBride said, noting that he’s come close to winning Cheyenne Frontier Days and the Pendleton Round-Up. McBride has competed in ProRodeo since 1996, having switched from calf roping to steer roping in his early 30s. Now, 22 years after his rookie year, McBride bagged his first NCFSR win. Although he lives in Ogallala, Neb., the 53-year-old cowboy competes in the Mountain States Circuit since his home is about 12 miles from the Colorado border. The logistics panned out for traveling to competitions, and so did the outcome, as McBride was at the top of the Mountain States Circuit for steer roping in 2017 and won the Earl Anderson Memorial Rodeo in Grover, Colo., June 17-18. McBride’s no stranger to success. In 2005, he claimed the average title at the Mountain States Circuit Finals Steer Roping. Two years later, in 2007, he won the year-end steer roping title for the Mountain States and finished 29th in the world standings with $11,291. The Nebraska cowboy has held on strong and stayed consistent since, finishing 26th in the world standings in 2015.

Spooks Gotta Whiz Hits the NRHA Million Dollar Mark Many successful riders, owners and horses in the reining industry spend a lifetime chasing an illustrious National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Million Dollar title. For Spooks Gotta Whiz, however, it took only seven years in the breeding shed to reach the million. After a spectacular run at the National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) by many of his offspring, Spooks Gotta Whiz is unofficially an NRHA Million Dollar Sire.
Spooks Gotta Whiz is by NRHA Million Dollar Sire Spooks Gotta Gun and out of Prettywhizprettydoes. Bred by Clint Haverty, the 2007 stallion is owned by Michell Anne Kimball, who purchased the horse from Duane Hicks in 2009 after meeting him at the High Roller Reining Classic. “Baby” currently stands at Cinder Lakes Ranch in Valley View, Texas. The bay stallion may have crossed the NRHA Million due to his success in the breeding pen, but Spooks Gotta Whiz had his fair share of glory within his competitive career, accumulating NRHA Lifetime Earnings (LTE) in excess of $345,147.
American Horse Council Tell your Senators to Co-Sponsor S. 1633. Please contact your senators today, and urge them to cosponsor S. 1633, the RNR Act of 2017. Sen.
