As we begin a new year, I want to wish all Bridgewater residents a healthy, peaceful, and fulfilling 2026. January is always a time for reflection and renewal, and it offers us an opportunity to recommit ourselves to the values that make our community strong.
At our January Council meeting, I was proud to issue a Mayoral Proclamation recognizing Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Human trafficking is a crime that thrives in silence, and awareness is an essential first step in prevention and protection. Bridgewater remains committed to safeguarding the dignity and safety of all who live, work, and visit here. I would also like to formally welcome our newly sworn-in Council members: Council President Joan Geiger, Council Vice President Andrew Bucko, and Councilwoman Ridwana Isla. I look forward to working collaboratively with each of them in the year ahead as we continue to move Bridgewater forward in a thoughtful and responsible way. Our residents deserve the very best from their local government, and I am committed to continuing to provide the services our community expects. As we reflect on the close of the holiday season, I want to thank everyone who joined us for our Christmas Tree Lighting and Menorah Lighting celebrations. These events are special not just for their traditions, but for the sense of togetherness they create. Seeing families, neighbors, and friends gathered in celebration is a powerful reminder of the warmth and community that defines Bridgewater. Thank you, as always, for your engagement, your care for this community, and your trust in local government. I wish you and your families a wonderful start to 2026, and I look forward to all we will accomplish together in the months ahead.
Mayor Matthew C. Moench

A Season of Light and Community in Bridgewater Bridgewater Township celebrated the season with two meaningful community gatherings that brought residents together in the spirit of light, tradition, and togetherness. The annual Christmas Tree Lighting filled the air with holiday cheer as families gathered to enjoy festive music, seasonal activities, and the joy of seeing the Township tree illuminated. Neighbors of all ages came together to share in a long-standing Bridgewater tradition that marks the beginning of the holiday season and reflects the warmth and unity of the community.
The Township’s Menorah Lighting offered another moment of reflection and celebration, honoring the traditions of Hanukkah and the enduring message of light overcoming darkness. Councilman Michael Kirsh welcomed attendees, the Jewish Community Center provided a thoughtful and engaging program, and Rabbi Dan led the lighting of the menorah. Together, these events highlighted Bridgewater’s commitment to celebrating diverse traditions while fostering connection, respect, and shared community spirit throughout the holiday season.

January is Dog Licensing Month! Hey Bridgewater dog lovers! It’s that time of year again: January isn’t just about resolutions and snowballs, it’s Dog Licensing Month too! According to our local ordinance, every dog of “licensing age” (that’s any pup 7 months or older) must be licensed during January each year with the Township. That means it’s time to get those tails wagging and tags updated! Why does it matter? A dog license isn’t just a legal requirement, it’s community care in action. Licensing helps ensure your furry friend is vaccinated against rabies, makes it easier to reunite lost dogs with their families, and shows everyone you’re a responsible pet parent. Here are a few paws-itive reminders: January is the month to license or renew your dog’s license in Bridgewater. It’s required for dogs 7 months and older — so mark your calendar! Once licensed, don’t forget to attach that shiny new tag to your pup’s collar! If you’ve welcomed a new pup home, if your dog just turned seven months, or if you’re simply checking off that New Year’s to-do list, licensing is quick, easy, and a great way to start the year on the right paw. Need help? The Bridgewater Township Clerk’s Office is happy to assist — call or visit during business hours for forms and info. Let’s keep our canine companions safe, healthy, and proudly licensed!
Journey Through the Past at the Lane/Voorhees/Brokaw House In October, the Friends of Bridgewater History (FOBH) took part in Somerset County’s annual Journey Through the Past event at the historic Lane/Voorhees/Brokaw House on Milltown Road. The home, which is owned by Bridgewater Township, is currently being restored in partnership with FOBH. Despite less-than-ideal weather, visitors stopped by throughout the day to learn more about the site and its history. A highlight of the event was a hands-on demonstration showing how early settlers used plants to dye fabric and create textiles, presented by Stephanie Moench, Chair of the Bridgewater Creative Arts Committee. Built around 1750 by William Lane, the Lane/Voorhees/Brokaw House is a rare example of a pre-Revolutionary DutchAmerican home and is listed on the New Jersey State Register of Historic Places. The house has witnessed centuries of local history, including ties to the Revolutionary War, when John Brokaw lost his life in service to his country. Surrounded by preserved open space along the North Branch of the Raritan River, the property remains an important link to Bridgewater’s past. Residents who missed this year’s event are encouraged to mark their calendars for Journey Through the Past in October 2026.

Winter Reminder: Clear Your Sidewalks! Bridgewater Township property owners and tenants are required to remove snow and ice from the sidewalks in front of their property within 12 hours of daylight after a snowfall ends — or thoroughly treat icy patches with sand, salt, or ashes within 24 hours if removal isn’t practical. Snow should not be shoveled into the street so that plows and traffic aren’t impeded. If snow or ice isn’t removed in time, the Township may clear it and charge the cost back to the property owner. Let’s keep our sidewalks safe for all pedestrians this winter!
