Come in out of the cold and join us in baking challah.

Malkie Herson from the Chabad Center of Jewish Life, will lead us in our baking and a discussion. While we knead and twist our dough, we will talk about the Fridays at 3:15pm meaning of challah and Judaism. $5/person.

Welcome Tu B’Shevat

Tu B’Shevat is the day that marks the beginning of a “new year” for trees. This is the season in which the earliest blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. It is traditional to eat fruit, such as grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates. Come have a taste of these fruits in the lobby of our JCC. Free to all!

Purim Celebration for Kids!

Purim commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot to destroy all the Jews in a single day. It is customary for children to dress up in costumes, read the Megillah (Book of Esther), which recounts the story of the Purim Miracle, give money to the poor, send gifts to friends, and eat a festive Purim feast.

Hamantaschen Baking: Hamantaschen are 3 sided triangular cookies that represent the hat that Haman wore.

Come ready to shape, bake and eat delicious hamantaschen!

Dress Up Parade: make a mask to wear or come dressed in your own costume. March in our festive parade!

Make Shalach Manot Baskets: On Purim we emphasize the importance of friendship and community by giving gifts of food, Mishloach Manot, to friends and family.

Make your own basket, fill it with your hamantaschen and give it to a loved one!

Donate: Bring a non-perishable item to put in our JCC Shalach Manot Basket to donate to a food shelter.

(Children with Special Needs can come at 4:30 for a private baking experience.)

Jump Start Volleyball

The Central Jersey Volleyball Academy offers a developmental volleyball program for youth grades 4 - 9. The youth development program focuses on all aspects of the game with an emphasis on fundamentals. This fun and comprehensive instructional program creates an environment that promotes learning, cultivates a love of the game, and motivates young athletes to achieve their goals. Key skill training includes, serving, passing, setting, and hitting. Players also learn concepts and strategies of the game.

Practices will be on Monday and Wednesday nights.

Grade 4-6 from 6 – 7pm Grade 7-9 from 7 – 8pm There will be two sessions at $250 per session.

Sports & Recreation Eye Level is a premium after school enrichment program focusing on Math and Language Arts. It originated from Korea from 1970s based on the founder’s philosophy to see from the child’s eye level. Eye Level provides a unique systemic method of learning for children from Pre-K to 8th Grade. Focused on both building the foundational knowledge and applying the concepts, Eye Level Math builds Critical Thinking and Problem Solving skills through Basic Thinking Math and Critical Thinking Math. Eye Level English builds Reading Comprehension and Writing skills. Eye Level Programs are taught by NJ Certified Teachers in 1:4 Teacher to Student ratio. Eye Level is located conveniently in Bridgewater, Basking Ridge, Hillsborough and Warren.

JCC has partnered with Eye Level to offer courses to the JCC members. JCC members will receive $50 OFF on 1st month tuition (new students only) and a portion of the tuition will be donated to the JCC. Hosted by the JCC Milwaukee, Wisconsin Maccabi Games for Jewish Children ages 13 -16 August 2-7 The JCC Maccabi Games is an International Olympic-style sports event held in multiple communities each summer in North America and is the largest organized sports program for Jewish teens in the world. In addition to sports, athletes experience home hospitality, help other people through community-service projects in Days of Caring and Sharing, get a taste of Israel at Hang Time, and meet Jewish teens from around the world.

Our JCC anticipates taking 12 Jewish athletes in the following sports: Swimming, Tennis, Dance and Volleyball.

Special Needs

Programs to enhance the lives of people needing just a little more.

JCC Rising Tide Swim Team

The JCC Bridgewater Rising Tide Special Olympics swim team is a volunteer organization that seeks to introduce individuals with special needs to the wonders of swimming. As part of Special Olympics New Jersey, we are a part of Somerset County Area 10 and attend swim meets at the area, state, and national level. We seek to provide an enriching and welcoming environment for swimmers with special needs of all ages and all abilities.

Swim practices are held at the JCC on Sunday mornings from 10:00-11:00am. The swim season runs from October through June. If you or an athlete is interested in joining us for next swim season, please contact Stephanie Johnson, Aquatics Director at 908-725-6994 X230 or SJohnson@ssbjcc.org.

Special Needs Swimming Skills Program Ages 3-12

All classes will be taught by certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors who have experience and certification in the special needs area. This program will be directly supervised by Paulette Kirchner, a public school special education teacher for 27 years and is under the direction of Stephanie Johnson, Aquatics Director/Special Olympics Local Training Program Coordinator. Long Course Training Spring Training: Monday, April 20- Sunday, June 21

(Schedule may be revised the days surrounding Bubble Take-Down, as well as during the last week of school when the pool club is open in the afternoons) Long Course season is the Spring/Summer competition season of USA Swimming, with all meets taking place in 50 meter pools. Long Course participation is expected of all current Tide swimmers and is a critical part of the swimmers’ continued development. The workouts will be a continuation of the fall/ winter training and will focus on conditioning the athletes and refining strokes, starts, turns and racing strategies in preparation for Long Course competition. Space is extremely limited and by invitation only.

Tide Pre-Team

This program is a bridge from our lesson program to our swim team and is designed to help swimmers develop the skills necessary for a successful future in competitive swimming. The pre-team will focus on the mechanics of the four competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly) in addition to starts and turns. To participate, swimmers should already have basic knowledge of all four strokes and be legal in at least two. Each group will meet for 45 minutes twice a week for 8 weeks. Swimmers who are ready to move to the competitive team at the end of a session will be placed in a practice group if a spot should come available. Space is extremely limited and will fill on a first come, first served basis.

BOXING HELPS PARKINSON’S PATIENTS STAY STEADY Recent Research has uncovered that exercise helps the brain to form, restore, and maintain connections. Staying active is especially important in fighting the progression of Parkinson’s, a degenerative disease that targets brain function. The National Parkinson’s Foundation even outlines exercise as “an essential part of managing the disease.” According to this same study, all of the participants who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s say the workout helps control debilitating symptoms of the disease, particularly tremors.

JFIT Staff Spotlight: Aviv Wagner Certified Personal Trainer & P-90X Coach Aviv Wagner has been a valued member of our fitness team for the last 7 years. He is an experienced personal trainer who began his career as a fitness instructor for the Israeli Defense Force.

He works both with clients on a one-on-one basis, has taught boot camp classes, and currently teaches both P90X and Gladiator Workout classes. JCC members have enjoyed long-term benefits from Aviv’s individualized training sessions as he encourages each client to include fitness as part of their lifestyle, teaching independence and fostering a love of fitness. Aviv’s group fitness classes are always challenging as he pushes his students to reach and possibly exceed their fitness goals. He has been able to develop positive relationships with many of his clients and students, and has served as a role model for those looking to improve their fitness level.

Members including Rich Bohach, Brandon Frank and Moneesh Arora have taken Aviv’s lead, and have extended their dedication to fitness beyond the walls of the JCC. Aviv and his team have participated in such events as the Tough Mudder, Spartan Races, the Warrior Dash, and the GoRuck Challenge, as well as numerous 5K’s, trail runs and even a few half marathons! Aviv’s passion for fitness is infectious, as members frequently seek him out not only for professional guidance, but for inspiration and motivation.

Aviv would advise any member looking to improve their health through fitness: make working out simple and fun, make exercise a part of a daily routine, and find a partner to work with.

Aviv’s positive attitude and belief in teamwork can help any member achieve and exceed their fitness goals!

Walter C is back to introduce New Jersey music. Celebrate our state’s contributors to American music in the 20th Century. Artists include Sinatra, Basie and Springstein as well as numerous others.

March 17 : Jewish Harlem with Marty Schneit

This lecture will include information as to why Jews selected Harlem as their residence in the 1880’s.

Marty will talk about the following individuals who resided in Harlem when Harlem was predominately Jewish: Oscar Hammerstein I and Oscar Hammerstein II, Richard Rogers, Yoselle Rosenblatt, Ehrich Weiss and Milton Berle. Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, originally Temple Israel, the largest and most influential synagogue in Harlem will be discussed.
