Dear Friends, With Labor Day right around the corner, we can reflect on what a wonderful summer we have had. Camp Ruach is finishing up its 18th season, the Swim Club is entering its final week and our preschool is getting ready to open with over 120 children enrolled! There were so many wonderful events this summer but the highlight for us was the membership appreciation pool party. More than 400 members joined us for a fun-filled, sun-filled, hot dog-filled day! The evening was beautiful as we listened to all of Carol King’s greatest hits. We truly appreciate all of you and your support for the J. If you missed it this year, we will look forward to seeing you next year. We’ll just order more hotdogs!! The High Holy Days are upon us. The traditional challah that we eat on Rosh Hashanah is round, symbolizing the seamless transition from one year to the next, each layer building on the one before. Here at our J, we are no different: we continually explore ways to build on our successes and learn from our challenges. Speaking of challah, 360 women will be gathering for our second annual Challah Bake…just in time for Rosh Hashanah! This Fall, especially, there is an excitement as we approach our 18th anniversary! We are thrilled to invite you to join us on Saturday, December 2 as we get together to celebrate! Our Jewish Community Center has been the cornerstone of Jewish life in our community. It is the place where Jewish culture thrives, families come together, and the future is shaped. The Jewish community has flourished as a result of our Center’s dynamic programming, key services and dedicated leadership. We continue to fulfill our mission, which has a tremendous impact on our community. Today, this community is growing, needs are changing – and the JCC must grow and change with it. To continue serving them well into the future, our programming must reflect today’s world… and the Center must be modernized and expand. Our JCC Staff and Board of Directors are dedicated to making this a place for everyone! We are guided by Jewish values that are truly universal. Please take time to share your stories, feedback and ideas with us so that we can continue to strive for excellence and know how you and your family benefit from your time here. Enjoy the rest of your summer, and Shana Tova!

Rosh Hashanah 5778 September 20 - 22 (Elul 29 - Tishri 2)

Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, begins at sundown on Wed., September 20 and ends on Fri., September 22. This holiday celebrates the beginning of the Jewish calendar, and it is customary to eat apples and honey, and honey cake for a sweet year. The holiday is a time to reflect on the past year and look ahead to the coming year, as we listen to the shofar and celebrate the creation of the world. Shana Tova!

Yom Kippur September 29 - 30 (Tishri 9-10) Yom Kippur will begin at sundown on Friday, September 29 and ends Saturday, September 30. Yom Kippur begins 10 days after Rosh Hashanah and the 10 days are called the “days of awe.” On Yom Kippur, we fast to atone for our sins. The JCC wishes everyone a meaningful fast. May your name be inscribed in the Book of Life.

Shemini Atzeret & Simchat Torah Shemini Atzeret: Oct. 12/Simchat Torah, Oct. 13 (22-23 Tishrei): Demonstrates G-d’s love of the Jewish people, and the celebration by the Jewish people of the completion of the reading of the Torah.

Sukkot October 4 - 11 (Tishri 14-21) Sukkot begins at sundown on Wednesday, October 4 and ends on Wednesday, October 11. Sukkot is one of three pilgrimage festivals when Jews traveled to the Temple of Jerusalem to offer sacrifices. At Sukkot, we celebrate the harvest, and it is considered a mitzvah to eat and sleep in the Sukkah, a threesided dwelling. The roof is constructed of branches so you can see the stars. Many people decorate their Sukkahs with pictures and fruit, and invite friends and families to enjoy a meal in their Sukkah.

FALL 2017/5778 PROGRAM GUIDE

..................early childhood six weeks - kindergarten

SARA WASSERMAN

Early Childhood Director x 9022 swasserman@ssbjcc.org

Our Philosophy The mission of the ECC is to create a safe and loving environment that allows all students — whatever their perceived strengths and weaknesses, whatever their personal likes and dislikes — to explore the world around them, and to become the best versions of themselves. As they work to navigate what it means to be a part of a classroom and a broader school community, we want them to try new things; to experiment; to succeed; and, even to fail (and learn how to pick themselves back up). We want them to learn to respect each other, to be empathetic and to value each other’s unique attributes and contributions. Our thoughtfully prepared learning environments and teacher involvement reflect the children’s interests and promote the development of social, emotional, and physical skills. A love of learning flourishes in a welcoming and inviting setting that is safe, nurturing, and stimulating.

Our Curriculum We utilize Creative Curriculum to guide our explorations in the classroom. Using developmentally appropriate and research based curriculum is recommended by the NJ Department of Education and is aligned with the NJ Teaching and Learning Standards. Curriculum provides the framework around which teachers organize the learning environment, experiences, and interactions. Creative Curriculum highlights the important balance between applying a general knowledge of child development with the particular knowledge a teacher gains by forming a relationship with each child and family. In addition, as a part of our commitment to quality childcare, we are enrolled in Grow NJ Kids. As a Grow NJ Kids participant, we receive resources to help our program continue to grow - including coaching, training, and professional development. Our classrooms are rich with language and print, science and art, blocks, and dramatic play, among other areas. The environment, in addition to our amazing staff, promotes each child’s intellectual, social, physical and emotional growth. Our school celebrates all of the Jewish holidays and traditions throughout the year. In addition, we view the child’s world and our school through seven Jewish Lenses that speak to a way of seeing, thinking and acting; Journey, Divine Image, Covenant, Holiness, Awakening, Interpretation, and Repair of the World. These guides allow us to consider topics that can be adapted and are relevant for children of all ages in our ECC: reflection, belonging, dignity, potential, intentionality, amazement, gratitude, inquiry, dialogue, and responsibility.

FALL 2017/5778 PROGRAM GUIDE

We are open year round from 7am-6pm with flexible schedule combinations to meet the needs of all families. Specials such as swim lessons, music, yoga, and art are all included in half day tuition. After school fee based enrichments include dance school, basketball, karate, swim, art, and tumbling.

SARA WASSERMAN

Early Childhood Director x 9022 swasserman@ssbjcc.org

We believe communication is a key element with our parents and families. We use an app called Tadpoles as a communication tool for teachers and parents. Each classroom is equipped with an ipad so that teachers can take photos and fill out daily updates for each child. Family involvement is also one of the core values in our school. Parents are welcome in the classrooms to read a story, share an activity, or participate in their child’s daily routine. In addition to the classroom, we offer multiple family programs and activities in the evenings and weekends throughout the year. Our bright, modern facility is located within the JCC in a separate and secure Early Childhood Wing. We are licensed by the State of NJ and have a high staff-to-child ratio in each classroom. As a part of the JCC, you and your family become a part of our welcoming and caring community. We are proud of our commitment to provide outstanding academic and developmentally appropriate programs for our children. (seasonal)

JOY MCINTYRE

Fitness Director x 9025 jmcintyre@ssbjcc.org

..............................fitness staff & member spotlight heavy. The mental and emotional strength I gained gave me courage, and I became the role model I wanted my children to respect. BODYPUMP was my Les Mills gateway “drug” and I’m now certified in BodyPump, CXWORX, GRIT, SPRINT and BODYVIVE. I still train with the same person, work out on my own,and teach and coach Les Mills classes. Most might look at the two photos and just see a physical difference, but it really is so much more than that. The woman on the right has become her own super hero. I love paying that feeling forward and get tremendous joy being a small part of someone else’s journey to become the healthiest version of themselves. It is incredibly rewarding.

Meet Elisa Bowser Fitness Instructor In one photo, I was in a really unhappy place. I was never an athlete or played any sports as a child. Weight was always an issue, and it fluctuated in my twenties and thirties. As a working mom of two, I put my kids first and was extremely involved in their schooling and activities. I had little time for me. I have no regrets and wouldn’t change a thing about that time. Four years ago some coworkers decided we should run the Rutgers Half Marathon. I hate running, but thought it would be fun to do with friends. Everyone bailed for various reasons. It was just me, and I never back down from a challenge. I happened to change gyms and my membership included 3 personal training sessions. Little did I know how profoundly my life would change because of one person. My trainer worked with me for 9 months. My goal was to run the entire race and finish with a decent time. My trainer also was a Les Mills instructor who taught BODYPUMP and BODYCOMBAT so I started taking his classes. It was instant love the first time I held a barbell in my hands! For the first time I felt strong and good about myself. I found something that my body was made to do, and I ran the Rutgers Half and finished in 2 hours and 15 min. During that time I made a major life changing decision because I finally realized that I was worthy of more. Training gave me my life back. I wanted to help other people feel strong and good about themselves and decided to become a Les Mills BODYPUMP instructor. My trainer embraced my goal and introduced me to powerlifting. I never feel more powerful, happy or alive as when I am lifting something

These are lessons I learned: • Find something, anything, that brings you joy. • Hard work pays off. • If you want something, go for it. Nothing happens overnight, but the process of achieving your goal is as rewarding as the goal itself. • Age is just a number, not an excuse. • Take risks. I use my fears to propel me forward instead of holding me back.

About Our Staff Our staff consists of highly trained, certified, experienced and professional lifeguards, American Red Cross Water Safety instructors, coaches and directors. Our staff takes pride in the programs, quality and cleanliness of our fantastic facility. No matter which program you or your child is involved in, you can be assured that you are receiving excellent and appropriate instruction and supervision. There is always at least one lifeguard on duty to ensure that you, your family and your guests are safe and that the pool area is clean and organized. Lifeguards can answer your general questions regarding policies and schedules.

Bubble/Outdoor Pool Our bubble pool is a 5 lane, 33 yard competitive-style pool. This pool is primarily utilized by our swim team, the JCC Bridgewater Tide, from mid-September to mid-May. The bubble structure is taken down for the summer for our Summer Swim Club. The pool features an intermediate pool which ranges from 1-3 feet, the main pool 3-6 feet with slide, and two kiddie pools that are one foot deep. The pool is kept at 82 degrees year round. The bubble/ outdoor pool has a commercial salt sanitization system and also uses UV technology to keep the pool water as clean as possible.

About Our Pools Indoor Pool

The Indoor Pool is a 5 lane, 25 yard (75’) competitive-style pool. This pool is open year round to all holding a JCC membership. The depth in the zero access area of the pool goes from zero to 4 feet, and the main part of the pool goes to 6 feet in depth. Our indoor pool is the only pool in the area running on a salt sanitization system. Feel the difference! Our indoor pool also uses UV technology to maintain the highest standards of water chemistry. The water temperature is maintained at a relaxing 84 degrees. Lessons are held in our indoor pool year round.

Group Swim Lessons 6 Months - 5 Years Parent and Child Aquatics (6 months - 21/2 years) Parents and children learn together to increase a child’s comfort level in the water and build a foundation of basic skills, such as arm and leg movements and breath control. The three levels are fun-filled and help introduce water safety concepts, encouraging a healthy recreational habit that your entire family can enjoy.

What is our Mission? THE J ZONE’s mission is the gift of time. During this time we support children, their families and caregivers to keep them healthy, happy and strong.

What is our respite program? Our respite program provides 2 hours (ages 5-11 and ages 12-16) of recreational fun to children with special needs. This program offers a well-deserved break to parents and caregivers from the daily challenges of childcare. Supporting a child with special needs can be tremendously challenging for parents and caregivers. Often parents and caregivers of children with special needs go for long periods of time before they get any free time. At THE J ZONE, we give parents and caregivers the time to take a needed break to have some fun, go out to eat, run errands, have some alone time or just get some needed rest. The time spent at THE J ZONE, will allow the child, their family and/or caregivers to return home recharged after everyone has had time away from their day to day routine and challenges.

Special Needs Private Lessons Private instruction for individuals with special needs on an appointment basis. For more information and fees please contact Aquatics at x9020 or SJohnson@ssbjcc.org

THE J ZONE offers your child the opportunity for socialization, arts and crafts, variety of games, sensory activities, playing in the gym or pool and much more. At THE J ZONE, your child can expect to enjoy fun-filled activities, form new friendships and have peer interaction in a well-supervised and structured environment.

FALL 2017/5778 PROGRAM GUIDE

What type of staff support will be provided? THE J ZONE staff members are trained in CPR/First Aid and all required specialized trainings. All of our staff must complete a background check and all trainings before they are allowed to work in the program. We will also have volunteers who complete the background check and an orientation.

How are behaviors handled? When behaviors occur we utilize positive behavior supports or a sensory/ quiet room.

What is the intake process? An intake meeting will be scheduled for each child and their family. During the intake process a detailed profile will be created for your child and we will utilize that information to address their needs and care while at THE J ZONE.

What types of special needs do the children have? The children in THE J ZONE program have a wide range of special needs, such as Autism, Down syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Emotional Disturbance, Cerebral Palsy, Asperger’s Syndrome, just to name a few. Each child in our program is unique and different, but they are still a child who loves to play and have fun. In Search of Israeli Cuisine

In Search of Israeli Cuisine is a portrait of the Israeli people told through food. It’s a “feast for the eyes”! Profiling chefs, home cooks, farmers, vintners and cheese makers drawn from more than 100 cultures that make up Israel today – Jewish, Arab, Muslim, Christian, Druze, a rich, complex and human story emerges. Through a documentary-like setting, we learn about food through interviews, farms, markets, restaurants, kitchens, landscapes and history – and audiences will discover that this hot, multi-cultural cuisine has developed only in the last 30 years. Director Robert Sherman: “After being invited on a Israeli foodpress trip in 2010, I had never heard anyone talk about Israeli cuisine. Like many, I thought it was mostly hummus and falafels. I couldn’t have been more WRONG!!”

He lived there until he was three, then his family was forced to leave, and they relocated to Bernkastel Koos, Germany. Erwin was 8 years old when Kristallnact occurred. In 1939, Erwin and his family immigrated at the age of 9 to the United States, where they settled in Newark, NJ. This program is co-sponsored with the Jewish Federation.
