First, there’s the staff who greet you with such warmth in the lobby, but it doesn’t stop there. Whether you are picking up your child in ECE, taking a Zumba class or going for a swim, each staff member tries to make your visit as memorable as possible. Then, there are the individual programs and events, and not just the obvious ones that we participate in all the time. There are family activities such as the Intergenerational Seder or the vacation camp programs. There are cultural programs, including the Thought Provoking Thursday series and Jewish LIFE that feature speakers ranging from artists to historians, to scholars to environmentalists. How about the New FitGround offered by JFit or the Lag Ba’omer Picnic that takes place every Spring? There’s so much happening every day under one roof that it’s hard to keep up with it all. Our staff is working together across areas of expertise to provide our members access to all of the benefits of the J. We strive to “Live Up” to our mission: cultivate and enrich Jewish identity, ensure Jewish continuity, foster wellness and broaden communal harmony. This year we have made great strides to transform the J, both physically and programmatically, into a center of community life. In addition to our daily programs and offerings, thousands of people came through our JCC doors. The J is truly a community center. Then, there’s you, the members who are the reason we exist. Some of you contribute financially, while others offer countless hours of help volunteering. Most importantly, you all participate in the wonderful programs and events at the J. Without your membership and support, this place would be nothing. But, put it all together, and you get a truly special vibrant place – you get the J…your home away from home. Through all of our explorations, we continue to do what we’ve been doing best – provide an array of experiences to individuals and families for personal meaning and growth. We take care of those who need our help the most – individuals in need of financial assistance, vulnerable older adults, people with special needs, families at risk. We are grateful for the support we receive from our community – from donors and volunteers, foundations and community partners.

We know that there’s truly something about this place. It’s in the something that we do for the community and we hope, the something that we do for you!

Rosh Hashanah 5777 Sunday, Oct. 2 - Tuesday, Oct. 4 Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, begins at sundown on Sunday, October 2 and ends on Tuesday, October 4. This holiday celebrates the beginning of the Jewish calendar, and it is customary to eat apples and honey, and honey cake for a sweet year. The holiday is a time to reflect on the past year and look ahead to the coming year, as we listen to the shofar and celebrate the creation of the world.
Yom Kippur Tuesday, Oct. 11 - Wednesday, Oct. 12 Yom Kippur will begin at sundown on Tuesday, Octber 11 and ends Wednesday, October 12. Yom Kippur begins 10 days after Rosh Hashanah and the 10 days are called the “days of awe.” On Yom Kippur, we fast to atone for our sins. The JCC wishes everyone a safe and meaningful fast. May your name be inscribed in the Book of Life.
Shemini Atzeret & Simchat Torah Shemini Atzeret: Oct. 23/Simchat Torah, Oct. 24 (22-23 Tishrei): Demonstrates G-d’s love of the Jewish people, and the celebration by the Jewish people of the completion of the reading of the Torah.
Sukkot Sunday, Oct. 16 - Sunday, Oct. 23 Sukkot begins at sundown on Sunday, October 16 and ends on Sunday, October 23. Sukkot is one of three pilgrimage festivals when Jews traveled to the Temple of Jerusalem to offer sacrifices. At Sukkot we celebrate the harvest, and it is considered a mitzvah to eat and sleep in the Sukkah, a threesided dwelling. The roof is constructed of branches so you can see the stars. Many people decorate their Sukkahs with pictures and fake fruit, and invite friends and families to enjoy a meal in their Sukkah.

SARA WASSERMAN
Early Childhood Director x 208 swasserman@ssbjcc.org
Dear JCC Families, I wanted to introduce myself to the JCC Family and the community. I am Sara Wasserman, the JCC’s new Early Childhood Director. In my role as the Director of the Blaustein Early Childhood Center, I am able to combine two of my great passions: working with young children and teacher education. I have been an educator for my entire adult life, starting as a head pre-school teacher, and most recently as a teacher educator at Montclair State University. I am delighted beyond words to be back among my favorite age group. I have a straightforward mission for the ECC… specifically, to create a safe and loving environment that allows all students – no matter their strengths and weaknesses, whatever their personal likes and dislikes -- to explore the world around them, and to become the best versions of themselves. In addition to benefitting from our child-centered education program, the foundation will be set for your children to become great members of society. Whether you already have a child (ren) enrolled in our school -- or are thinking about it for the future -- I am happy to meet with you, show you our school and answer any questions. My door is always open. I am honored to be a part of the JCC family, and I look forward to a wonderful year of learning, loving and growing. See you around the J! Warmest regards,
Sara
Who are We? Here at the Blaustein Early Childhood Center we work on building partnerships with families. While your children are here, they will be in the loving care of our experienced and enthusiastic teachers.
What Do We Do Here? When you choose the Blaustein Early Childhood Center for your child, you’re choosing a school within an incredible facility. Yoga in the gym, planting in the garden, exploring the campgrounds, swimming in the pools, and specials throughout the multipurpose rooms in the building make our school experience different and exciting. We use all of the indoor and outdoor facilities to enhance learning, playing and growing. The JCC’s two indoor heated swimming pools are used year round by our children.
What are we learning? A child’s early school years are incredibly important as they work on emotional, social, physical and cognitive development. Our goals are to support each child along that journey. We value play as an important component of learning, so we plan and encourage activities for children that inspire curiosity and a sense of wonder. They learn how to interact with their teachers, play with their peers and discover what they are interested in as they develop their individual personalities.

FALL 2016/5777 PROGRAM GUIDE
We recognize that each child has their own timetable for development. Our program provides an environment that stimulates learning and social growth within the framework of each child’s developmental needs. We believe children thrive in a safe, nurturing, healthy and respectful environment with teachers that are well trained in child development. Our child-centered curriculum integrates literacy, mathematical thinking, science, social skills as well as gross and fine motor development into all parts of your child’s day. Children are given opportunities to make choices, to work together cooperatively and to express themselves in many ways.
Our program is shaped by the NJ State Core Standards for Infants, Toddlers and Preschool aged children. Below is a list of some common goals we have while working with your child. For more information on the standards we use to guide our practice, you can visit: http://www.nj.gov/education/ece/guide/standards.pdf • We believe that young children are capable and competent. Our work is to discover individual strengths and enhance learning through a variety of topics and themes that expand upon those skills. • We encourage children to try and accomplish tasks on their own before asking for help so that they can begin to feel a sense of confidence and pride in their achievements. • Each of our teachers work to create a comfortable, loving, respectful relationship with each student. Additionally, teachers work to develop and nurture positive social relationships within the classroom. Similarly, strong and open relationships between teachers, directors, and families are vital.

Jewish Learning The Blaustein Early Childhood Center welcomes children of all religious backgrounds, nationalities and cultures. We recognize that many of the children in our program are not Jewish; the foundational ideas of kindness, respect and responsibility for one another are the types of Jewish values we teach. We welcome children and families of other beliefs and denominations, and believe that children learn from one another. Understanding that people have different beliefs is an important concept for children, and it is openly discussed and validated in the classroom.

Running Clinic 2 with Adam Sunday, September 11 • 10am INSTRUCTOR: Adam
Discounted Member Fee: $40 | Fee: $60
Clinic is open to all levels; need not have participated in previous clinic. The goal of this running clinic is to help teach proper technique to those who have chronic injuries, want to improve their speed, or simply want to enjoy running. Participants will be analyzed using the POSE Method (Pull-Fall-Pull) as the basic standard for teaching. Each member will get a before and after video analysis and a series of drills/exercises to help improve their running. Our first Running clinic was a huge success! Here are some of the comments from our members who participated: • “Great Clinic...it was a course which provided a different way to think about running.”
Program consists of 30 training days and 2 days of weigh in/weigh out. Teams will battle for the group to lose the most combined total body inches and weight. Participants must commit to the time slots of their coaches and must attend all 8 small group trainings. In addition, participants must take 3-4 group fitness classes to supplement their weekly workout. Food journaling is highly suggested, but not mandatory this round. Teams will communicate via text, e-mails or social media to build camaraderie. Meet the team coaches at the informational meeting on Friday, September 30 at 5pm.

NEW!
High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is coming to the J! Stay tuned for more information on demo classes during our Fall Session and for the Ultimate Launch of Les Mills GRIT Series this Winter Session: Les Mills GRIT-PLYO, Les Mills GRIT-CARDIO and Les Mills GRIT-STRENGTH.
What’s All the Buzz About HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)? What exactly is this, and why has it gotten so much attention recently? High intensity interval training combines short, high intensity bursts of exercise, with slow, recovery phases repeated throughout one short 15 - 20 minute session. It’s done at 85–100 percent of one’s maximum heart rate rather than 50 -70 percent in moderate endurance activity. HIIT can be done anywhere, doing any type of exercise, and is best described as working out like a “sprinter” rather than a “marathon runner”. “What’s great about this type of training is that anyone can do it!” -Dr. Josh Ax
The benefits of this type of training have been numerous… Anti-Aging According to research, there is a direct relationship between physical activity and life expectancy. Exercises release an enzyme called telomerase, which has been coined as the anti-aging enzyme. When a person works out, this enzyme is released in circulating cells. HIIT training increases high levels of this enzyme which is reflected as…Increased Energy, Increased Muscle Tone, Reduction of Body Fat and Increase in Confidence. Balancing Hormones HIIT also helps balance hormones responsible for unhealthy eating habits resulting in weight gain. Two important hormones, Leptin (long term regulation of energy balances and suppresses food intake) and Ghrelin (responsible for feeling hungry) are moderated by this type of training. By balancing both of these hormones, Ghrelin is suppressed and Leptin is increased, allowing participants to manage a healthy weight loss with exercise. Elevated levels of Testosterone Elevated levels of Testosterone are detected during and after HIIT, which aids in weight loss. The new discoveries with this type of training make it very attractive to the normal individual who has very little time for exercise. However, HIIT isn’t just for the beginner. Athletes find this type of training favorable when in conjunction to their sport-specific workout routine. Studies show that HIIT works better if done first thing in the morning. By exercising on an empty stomach, glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity improves. This will curb the munchies and the desire to eat unhealthy.

About Our Staff Our staff consists of highly trained, certified, experienced and professional lifeguards, American Red Cross Water Safety instructors, coaches and directors. Our staff takes pride in the programs, quality and cleanliness of our fantastic facility. No matter which program you or your child is involved in, you can be assured that you are receiving excellent and appropriate instruction and supervision. There is always at least one lifeguard on duty to ensure that you, your family and your guests are safe and that the pool area is clean and organized. Lifeguards can answer your general questions regarding policies and schedules.
Bubble/Outdoor Pool Our bubble pool is a 5 lane, 33 yard competitive-style pool. This pool is primarily utilized by our swim team, the JCC Bridgewater Tide, from mid-September to mid-May. The bubble structure is taken down for the summer for our Summer Swim Club. The pool features an intermediate pool which ranges from 1-3 feet, the main pool 3-6 feet with slide, and two kiddie pools that are one foot deep. The pool is kept at 82 degrees year round. The bubble/ outdoor pool has a commercial salt sanitization system and also uses UV technology to keep the pool water as clean as possible.
About Our Pools Indoor Pool
The Indoor Pool is a 5 lane, 25 yard (75’) competitive-style pool. This pool is open year round to JCC members. The depth in the zero access area of the pool goes from zero to 4 feet, and the main part of the pool goes to 6 feet in depth. Our indoor pool is the only recreational pool in the area running on a salt sanitization system. Feel the difference! Our indoor pool also uses UV technology to maintain the highest standards of water chemistry. The water temperature is maintained at a relaxing 84 degrees. Lessons are held in our indoor pool year round.
Group Swim Lessons 6 Months - 5 Years Parent and Child Aquatics (6 months - 21/2 years) Parents and children learn together to increase a child’s comfort level in the water and build a foundation of basic skills, such as arm and leg movements and breath control. The three levels are fun-filled and help introduce water safety concepts, encouraging a healthy recreational habit that your entire family can enjoy.

Special Engagement Speakers... Sukkah Design Workshop with Yoshi Silverstein Sunday, September 25 During Passover, we re-tell the stories of our ancestors. During Sukkot, we re-live them -- building temporary shelters and living as much of our lives as possible in this fully three dimensional space. But what makes a sukkah “kosher”? Within the constraints dictated by Jewish tradition, how can the sukkah be a vessel for creative architectural expression? And how might you go about designing and building a unique and personal sukkah to enjoy with your friends and loved ones? Join our hands-on design workshop to learn about the holiday of Sukkot and the laws and origins of the sukkah; see examples of distinctive sukkahs both ancient and contemporary; and design your own sukkah that you could build this year yourself! Curious about Sukkot and Sukkah design competitions? Check out this article for some pre-workshop reading: bit.ly/SukkahDesign_TheDirt
Yoshi Silverstein is Director of the JOFEE Fellowship at Hazon and Founder of Mitsui Design, which seeks to strengthen Jewish connections to nature through landscape design and community engagement. He completed his Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture at the University of Maryland, focused on landscape experience and outdoor learning environments. His sukkah design, “Tension|Release,” was a finalist in the Leichtag Foundation’s 2014 Sukkot at the Ranch design competition.
Sustainability from the Bottom Up with Shawn Shafer Sunday, October 30 Since Adam was created from the adamah (earth), Jewish people have been intimately linked to the earth. How can Torah, brachot and mindful practice help us stay connected from farm to flush, and dust to dust? Join The POOP Project’s Shawn Shafner for this fascinating, hilarious and totally timely conversation, and find out why Time Out NY says, “Shafner wants a global movement and, given his natural charm and bottomless capacity for scatological puns, he might just get one.”
Pickling Workshop with a Spirituality Twist with Jessica Berlin Sunday, March 26, 2017 Jess is thrilled to be the JOFEE Fellow where she can share her excitement for Judaism, earth-based spirituality and farming as an educator, curriculum developer and retreat manager. Jess grew up with a deep sense of wonder for the earth, spending much of her time hiking, camping and climbing trees. She has a lifelong passion for Jewish text and spirituality, having spent four years studying and teaching in Israel. After graduating from Queens College with a degree in Urban Planning, she served as a key administrator at American Jewish World Service and AVODAH. Jess learned to utilize the power of nature, in the form of a farm or forest, as powerful tools for transformation and selfexpression.
