Dear JCC Family, As we work our way through the comments and responses received from our JCC’s Benchmarking report, there are a few items which really caught my attention. Provided to us by the JCC Association, Benchmarking highlights both positive aspects and criticisms of the way we operate your JCC. Absolutely, the overwhelming impression that we receive is that our membership is grateful and supportive of the hard work and best efforts that are put forth by our board, our staff and our volunteers. Never-the-less, we know there are always things that need improvement, best-practices from other JCCs that we can adapt, and valid criticism that must be addressed. We want you to know that we value your feedback and take everything you say to heart. We thank you for taking the time to take the survey, and we want you to know that we are here to meet yours and the community needs and are always working to be better and innovative! One of the ways in which we do this is through our month-long initiative called “JCC March Mitzvah Madness -- on the Road to Making a Difference”. Giving to others is an obligation in Judaism, a duty that cannot be forsaken even by those who are themselves in need. So although we, too are a charity, we felt that it was our duty, and our great pleasure to help others. It is because of this that during this past March we dedicated ourselves to making a difference! We are so pleased to be helping people right here in our local community, as well as in Israel. Our staff has gone above and beyond in creating an atmosphere of helping and giving to others. I am extremely proud of their kindness and dedication. It is so gratifying to see the strong sense of caring that our staff shows through their Mitzvah Projects. We are proud to announce that... we raised $670 for Israel’s Save a Child’s Heart organization; held a Zumba-a-thon that had 60 participants and raised more than $1,200 for the Children’s Brain Tumor Project; and sponsored a night of bingo with 160 attendees that raised more than $6,000 for the Elle Foundation that grants second wishes to children with a recurrence of cancer. In addition, we have been collecting items, including Kosher food items and household products for Israeli families with a family member undergoing cancer treatment in New Jersey; toiletries for the homeless to be distributed by SHIP, the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program; and used towels and blankets to benefit a local animal shelter. As we go to press, we are planning the final event of March Mitzvah Madness, a pasta dinner to benefit Special Olympics Somerset County. As always, our doors are always open and your comments are welcome. Your membership continues to be highly valued. Enjoy the spring and have a great holiday season. Yours truly,

LINDA WEISS Early Childhood Director x 208 lweiss@ssbjcc.org

Our Philosophy Our thoughtfully prepared learning environments reflect the children’s interests and challenge mastery of skills. Our rooms are set up in learning centers that allow selfdirected, small group play. Additionally, teachers plan guided learning experiences that develop skill building and comprehension. A love of learning flourishes in an inviting setting that is safe, nurturing and stimulating. We have developed reassuring routines that promote the development of social, emotional and physical skills.

Our Curriculum We use Creative Curriculum which is one of the developmentally appropriate and research based curriculums recommended by the New Jersey Department of Education and is aligned with the New Jersey Teaching and Learning Standards. Our state certified and licensed teachers plan and develop a language rich environment that promotes each child’s intellectual, social, physical and emotional growth. Daily schedules include active and quiet times, gross and fine motor activities. Our children play in our beautiful, fenced outdoor playground, as weather permits. Through project learning, children explore their interests. Children are surrounded by books, literacy and exposure to the alphabet to prepare them for reading proficiency. Manipulatives and games reinforce number ability and concepts. Fine motor skills are built through hands on activities and writing. Our school celebrates all of the Jewish holidays and traditions throughout the year and teaches about Israel. We participate in SHEVA—the JCCs of North America Learning Framework.

About Our Staff Our staff consists of highly trained, certified, experienced and professional lifeguards, American Red Cross Water Safety instructors, coaches and directors. Our staff takes pride in the programs, quality and cleanliness of our fantastic facility. No matter which program you or your child is involved in, you can be assured that you are receiving excellent and appropriate instruction and supervision. There is always at least one lifeguard on duty to ensure that you, your family and your guests are safe and that the pool area is clean and organized. Lifeguards can answer your general questions regarding policies and schedules.

Bubble/Outdoor Pool Our bubble pool is a 5 lane, 33 yard competitive-style pool. This pool is primarily utilized by our swim team, the JCC Bridgewater Tide, from mid-September to mid-May. The bubble structure is taken down for the summer for our Summer Swim Club. The pool features an intermediate pool which ranges from 1-3 feet, the main pool 3-6 feet with slide, and two kiddie pools that are one foot deep. The pool is kept at 82 degrees year round. The bubble/ outdoor pool has a commercial salt sanitization system and also uses UV technology to keep the pool water as clean as possible.

About Our Pools Indoor Pool

The Indoor Pool is a 5 lane, 25 yard (75’) competitive-style pool. This pool is open year round to all holding a JCC membership. The depth in the zero access area of the pool goes from zero to 4 feet, and the main part of the pool goes to 6 feet in depth. Our indoor pool is the only pool in the area running on a salt sanitization system. Feel the difference! Our indoor pool also uses UV technology to maintain the highest standards of water chemistry. The water temperature is maintained at a relaxing 84 degrees. Lessons are held in our indoor pool year round.

Group Swim Lessons 6 Months - 5 Years Parent and Child Aquatics (6 months - 21/2 years) Parents and children learn together to increase a child’s comfort level in the water and build a foundation of basic skills, such as arm and leg movements and breath control. The three levels are fun-filled and help introduce water safety concepts, encouraging a healthy recreational habit that your entire family can enjoy.

................................ fitness JOY MCINTYRE

Fitness Director x 226 jmcintyre@ssbjcc.org

Have you considered Periodization in your workouts? The concept of Periodization for athletes and those aspiring to be more athletic is not a new concept. Its usage is of fundamental importance if anyone is looking to improve the amount they lift, the number of reps they perform, or the benefits of adding muscle to create a fitter appearance.

What does Periodization actually mean? Periodization is changing up a routine to minimize injury and create more variety in your workout routines. Another way of saying… changing up what you do in the gym to engage your muscle fibers differently, spurring on new muscle growth. Periodization inhibits fitness plateaus, where no change in body shape or weight is happening.

Group Fitness

How do I do this?

JFIT offers over 72 great classes per week, including Spin and Les Mills BodyPump, BodyVive, BodyCombat and CXWORX. We also offer Aquatic Fitness to those in need of water resistance or support, dialing up or down their workouts. Our Yoga, Pilates, Long-and-Lean, and Tai Chi will challenge you both mentally and bodily. Zumba, Zumba Gold and Bollywood will create the “party” atmosphere to burn mega calories, while our Senior Vive and Cardio circuit classes will help our active adults stay fit and strong. Check out our Group Fitness schedule at www.ssbjcc.org/ fitness.

The best way to accomplish this is to simply divide the year by seasons. Each season focus on one aspect you would like to improve upon. For example, in the summer cardio could be your main focus, training your heart to be a better contractor. With nice weather it is easier to simply “move”. So, during the summer focus on running/ jogging or brisk walking, bike riding, roller blading or playing a sport outdoors. Just move! 30-60 minutes per day is optimum for great calorie burn, and working your heart to be healthier.

FOR FALL, with the weather changing, you could break

your routine to 50% Cardio – 50% Strength Training. Continue your outdoor workouts on those days that are nice outside. Inclement days should be set aside for strength training. “Upper” and “Lower” Body days are a good way to start your strength training routine.

FOR WINTER, inclement weather keeps us in our home

or in the Fitness Center. Strength train selective muscles a bit more rigorously by doing 2-3 different exercise per each muscle group. Make sure 1-2 times a week you are still doing some sort of cardio (treadmill, AMT, Bike, Elliptical etc.) exercise. This will help keep weight down and metabolic rate up.

FOR SPRING, we are back to the 50% Strength Training -

50% Cardio. Start venturing out of the Fitness Center and home as the weather gets nicer. Strength train shorter amounts of time, but focus on adding more weight per each exercise. (Increase your poundage for each exercise you perform.)

SPRING/SUMMER 2016/5776 PROGRAM GUIDE

JOY MCINTYRE

Is This Workout For Everyone, Beginner and Athlete?

Fitness Director x 226 jmcintyre@ssbjcc.org

No. This is just a guide line. It also depends on where you are on your personal fitness journey. If you have more than 20 pounds to lose, then workouts during all seasons should have a strong cardio component. If you are at a point that you want to sculpt your body and add definition to your body, then weight lifting during the summer is a must. Just think… change. What can I do to my workout routine which will keep my muscles continuously changing? What activities can you vary every 6-8 weeks to keep your workout routine fresh? There is no set program. It depends on the individual, their goal and the amount of time available to commit to work out for better health and wellness.

Personal Training and Small Group Training: Why Train? A great question! Why should someone train with a personal trainer if there are so many diverse Group Fitness Class options? Simply put, a personal trainer provides individual attention. The trainer creates workouts specifically for their clients, taking into consideration their goals and physical limitations. Creating an individual fitness routine, is a guaranteed way of making sure the client 1.) Is accountable and works out the number of times they are prescribed to and 2.) Trainers will “push” beyond what the client thinks they could do, to what they actually are capable of doing.

FitGround – Back to Basics With Spring comes nice weather and the return of JFIT FitGround! Our JCC boasts with pride as being one of the few fitness facilities to have their very own outdoor functional fitness adult and small group training area.

Why is FitGround an Important part of an Exercise Program? FitGround offers a total body workout for the fitness beginner to the trained athlete. FitGround is specifically engineered for outdoor use and offers circuit style training using basic movements to work out the body. These basic training movements can be performed by almost anyone, and they mimic daily activities we perform in our home and work environment. This type of training enhances our strength and power for explosive movements, as well as, refining our eye-hand coordination and mental alertness.

In group fitness, camaraderie goes a long way. Belonging to a group that work outs together keeps you accountable and on track; and yes, the instructor will help everyone obtain the best and safest form during the class. However, individual needs cannot be met in a group setting – due to the fact that there are many individuals in the class.

How does Small Group Training Differ from Group Fitness? In small group training, the trainer to client ratio should not exceed 4 when working in a fitness center atmosphere. If the trainer is leading a “bootcamp” style training then the ratio should not exceed 8. (The difference in ratio is due to the fact that Bootcamp style trainings often require participants to partner up.) It is the low number of participants and the frequency of the training that allows the trainer to become familiar with the group. The Trainer is able to create the same type of personal training as one-on-one…catering to a client’s individual needs and limitations, thereby creating success.

JFIT Performance Camp

NEW! Agility Camp For Athletes

April 25 - April 29 Ages: 10-18 years Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri at 4pm (45-minute sessions)

Fee: $75/Athlete

We work to develop faster communication from the central nervous system (CNS) to the muscles of the body. This allows the body to respond to multi-directional changes in shorter amounts of time, imperative to all sports. Our Agility Camp program uses the common ladder and cone drill, however, JFIT builds upon this basic skill sets and adds reactive agility training to improve CNS response. In summary, the athlete will experience a faster transition from a dead stop to full sprint and will improve upon their full speed directional changes. Participants should be able to run 1 mile in 7:30 and complete two 1-minute rounds of burpees. For more information, contact Jay Kellogg at x260 or email JKellogg@ssbjcc.org.

JCC Krakow members, staff, volunteers, and friends from around the world will come together to raise awareness and funds for Krakow’s Jewish community. “When Jews around the world consider Poland, they have an obligation to not only remember the past, but also to recognize the work being done to bring as many Jews here in Poland back to the Jewish people. The Ride For

The Living is so important because Jewish life in Poland is flourishing - a miracle considering anti-Semitism in Europe today. Jewish communities around Poland are growing, and while we acknowledge our loss as a people here, we must focus on the future,” explains Rabbi Schudrich the events chairperson. Member Spotlight: Alan Markowitz One of our members Alan Markowitz has shown a path to aspire towards at the JCC. Alan has always had a power to lead as he is a professor of graduate education at Collage of Saint Elisabeth in Morristown, leading is in his nature. Alan has been active since a young age. but one day alan had a issue with his hip. In 2011 Alan took a fall dislocating his hip and breaking his femur, requiring a hip removal surgery which required multiple surgery’s thereafter with complications of infection and nerve damage. This left Alan in a wheel chair for some time. He eventually graduated to a walker. Unsatisfied, he strived for more as he would not sit idly by while his 4 children and 4 grandkids explored the world. With a strong emotional back bone from his life partner Rachel, Alan arrived at the JCC. On a mission every time he walks through our doors, Alan has gone from hesitant to confident in a matter of months. Last year Alan could barely walk... a couple months ago a walking stick was a must... today, he can be seen walking right by you without any help at all. We are taught practice makes perfect which sounds easy enough. But no one ever factors in the spills and falls. Alan truly embodies the quote “Fall down eight times, get up nine.” Alan personal trains twice a week as well as swims twice a week. If his trainer is not available or the pool is closed, he’s is on a bike or weight machine. Forward is the only option in Alan’s mind. In addition, if you ever need a update on a Rutgers football game Alan attends all of the home games and can give you the play-by-play of any game.

Jewish Film Series Three Mothers

Saturday, May 21 7:00pm Location: Temple Beth-El, Hillsborough Suggested Donation: $5/person

“Three Mothers” weaves a remarkable story of triplets named for flowers: Rose, Jasmine and Flora. Born in Egypt before 1948, these Jewish sisters immigrated to Israel and grew into three very different young women. Now Flora has retired from her work as a midwife, Jasmine awaits a kidney transplant, and Rose, once a successful singer, is wrapped in silence since the death of her husband. The film explores the limits of the bonds of sisterhood as they reveal the decades-old secret that has twisted their lives and families together. As the sisters’ story of love, sacrifice, and resentment unfolds against the backdrop of their daughter and niece Rucha’s struggle to start a family of her own, the filmmaker confronts, with great insight and compassion, the difficult question of what it means to be a mother. Discussion to follow film screening.
