12 Noon at the JCC Patients become despondent when faced with life changing accidents or illnesses. A lifetime with a disability seems like the end to some who may never walk, see or hear again. Hearts are heavy in these situations, especially if children are involved. However, no one can give up. The journey begins by discovering the fire that burns inside every person in a hospital bed or those who heal the bed ridden.

celebration with falafel dinner)
Portraits of two beloved icons – Sholom Aleichem and Theodore Bikel – are woven together in this enchanting new documentary. The two men have much in common: wit, wisdom and talent, all shot through with deep humanity and Yiddishkeit. Theodore Bikel, the unstoppable performer whose career spanned more than 150 screen roles (including an Oscar-nominated turn in The Defiant Ones) and countless stage and musical productions, was also the foremost interpreter of Sholom Aleichem’s work. Bikel played Tevye the Milkman on stage more than 2,000 times, and he animated Aleichem’s work through his creation of two celebrated musical plays about the great Russian author.

Irma Horowitz Film Series
The film, Theodore Bikel: In the Shoes of Sholom Aleichem combines Bikel’s charismatic storytelling and masterful performances with a broader exploration of Aleichem’s remarkable life and work. A pioneer of modern Jewish literature who championed and luxuriated in the Yiddish language, Sholom Aleichem created dozens of indelible characters. His Tevye the Milkman, Motl the Cantor’s Son, and Menachem Mendl--”shtetl Jews” for whom humor and pathos were two sides of the same Yiddish coin--remain invaluable windows into pre-war Eastern European Jewish life, real and imagined. Following the film, a discussion will be led by Aimee Ginsberg Bikel, widow of Theodore Bikel, journalist and Director of the Theodore Bikel Legacy Project. Aimee Ginsburg Bikel is an American-Israeli writer, journalist, and public speaker. A veteran of the IDF and a graduate of Hebrew University, she was an awardwinning journalist and radio broadcaster in Israel before becoming the first full time Israeli correspondent in India, a post she held for 15 years. This program is supported by the Irma Horowitz Endowment Fund.

Judith Viorst, Author Nearing Ninety: And Other Comedies of Late Life Wednesday, March 4 • 12:00 PM Fee: $18 (Includes Lunch) In Nearing Ninety: And Other Comedies of Late Life, Judith Viorst candidly shares the complicated joys and everyday tribulations that await us at the age of ninety, all with a large dose of humor and an understanding that nothing – well, almost nothing – in life should be taken too seriously. While she struggles to make it to midnight on New Year’s Eve, while she’s starting to hear more eulogies than symphonies, while she’ll forever be disheartened by what she weighs (and forever unable to stop weighing herself), there is plenty to cherish at ninety: hanging out with the people she loves, playing a relentless game of Scrabble, and still sleeping tush-to-tush with the same man to whom she’s been married for sixty years.
Judith Viorst was born and brought up in New Jersey and has lived in Washington, DC, since 1960. She has written children’s chapter and picture books including Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day; adult fiction and nonfiction, including the New York Times bestseller, Necessary Losses; poetry for children and adults. Her most recent books of poetry include, What Are You Glad About?, What Are You Mad About?, and Nearing Ninety.
