While it is easy to believe that our membership fees alone allow our JCC to operate, this is not the case. The JCC’s Annual Campaign raises funds that directly influence all facets of our JCC’s operations. We are asking for your help so that we can continue to provide the programs and services essential to those in our very own community. You might not realize that there are many people in our area who are in true need of financial assistance. In order to help them, we depend on our community members to donate to the JCC Annual Campaign, which supports our Scholarship Fund. The Fund supports children so that they can attend the Blaustein Early Childhood Center and JCC Camp Ruach. In addition, the Scholarship Fund supports seniors in our community living on a limited income by providing a Kosher, nutritional lunch and an opportunity to exercise and socialize. The JCC also awards scholarship assistance for membership to individuals with disabilities and special needs. Since we opened our doors in 1999, the JCC has allocated more than $1 million in scholarship assistance to individuals and families right here in our own community. This has been made possible with your financial support. We are asking for your help so that the JCC can continue to make a difference in people’s lives.

The importance of giving to our JCC’s Annual Campaign is clear. We are asking everyone to donate. Please give what you can. Your donation will play a vital role in the successful operations of our JCC. Next time you walk through the JCC and notice the energy, enthusiasm, and smiles, you will know that your contributions are making a difference.

Lobby ATM at the J! For the convenience of our JCC Members and Guests, we now have an ATM located in the main JCC Lobby.

A reduced transaction fee of $2 is available for those who are not account holders with the sponsoring bank.

A portion of the reduced transaction fee goes directly to The JCC Scholarship Fund.

The Scholarship Fund helps to send children to JCC Camp Ruach and the Blaustein Early Childhood Center, as well as supporting our Senior Nutritional Program. The JCC Scholarship Fund also assists families in need so they can attend programs at our Center.

Miss Dawn has been at the JCC for 10 years. She teaches a variety of movement classes. She has a BFA in dance with over 14 years of teaching experience. Miss Dawn lives in Branchburg with her husband and two children.

Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood music and movement program for children birth to five and their parents or caregivers. environment. Sukkot is one of three pilgrimage festivals when Jews traveled to the Temple in Jerusalem to offer sacrifices.

This holiday begins on September 19th, 2013. We celebrate the harvest. It is a mitzvah to eat and sleep in the sukkah, a 3 sided dwelling. The roof is constructed of branches so you can see the stars. Children enjoy decorating the sukkah with pictures and fake fruit.

In Rhythms you will focus on the ideas, beliefs and sources that shape Jewish Life and practice, including the daily, weekly, monthly, annual life –cycle observances and customs. She began talking to her fellow patients and dozens of other veterans of serious illness, seeking to discover what sick people wished their friends knew about how best to comfort, help, and even simply talk to them.

“The Breakfast Parliament” Every morning, veteran members of Kibbutz Ein Tzurim get together in the empty dining room. Here their “parliament” reverently discusses the inner politics, gossip, and agricultural developments of the kibbutz, as well as the upcoming 60th anniversary celebrations. When the kibbutz votes to stop serving breakfast, the parliament members embark upon a struggle that will bring the kibbutz’s entire existence into question.

“The Ranch” David is the owner of a ranch in a remote settlement that will soon be evacuated by the army. He has already experienced eviction from the Sinai in 1982, and this time he has decided to give in quietly. This causes a serious confrontation with his idealistic 17 year old son, Oriah, who is prepared to fight the eviction body and soul.

SWIM TEAM JCC Tide Swim Program The JCC Bridgewater Tide is competitive, year round swim team that competes in local, state and national USA Swimming meets. The Tide provides instruction and training to a variety of skill levels for athletes aged 6-18. One of only a few teams in the nation that has two Level 5 ASCA coaches, the Tide program focuses on all facets of the athletes’ development, from improving technique and speed to good sportsmanship, work ethic and nutrition. The National and Gold practice groups are by invitation only and require complete commitment by the swimmers. Swimmers in National and Gold will train 6-7 times a week, with intense workouts that focus on stroke refinement, speed, endurance and race strategy. Diamond is our transitional group that prepares swimmers for possible placement in Gold or National and gives the swimmers the foundations needed for senior level swimming. The Tidal Waves, Bronze and Silver groups practice 3-4 days a week and focus on the fundamentals of the four competitive strokes. In addition to working on technique, the age group swimmers will also begin to develop speed and sound racing strategies. All swimmers are expected to compete in USA Swimming meets approximately one weekend a month.

Our team offers multiple opportunities for all ages and abilities.

Tidal Waves

Our beginning level age group team. Swimmers will focus on stroke mechanics for all 4 competitive strokes and all possible turns.

Bronze Team

Our Intermediate age group level starts to build endurance while striving to perfect stroke mechanics for all 4 strokes and all possible turns.

Silver Team

Swimmers in this group are introduced to more rigorous training but still with the emphasis on technique. The commitment level and intensity of both training and competition group.

Diamond Team

This program is a transitional level in which the group prepares swimmers for Gold or National placement and senior level swimming.

Gold Team

This program is the highest level for our age group program. The primary focus is refining stroke technique, race strategies, and building a strong training base for Senior level swimming.

National Team

This program is highest competitive training group, specifically designed for swimmers preparing for State, National and/or the Collegiate level.

Please note: Practice Groups are determined by both age and ability. These are only guidelines, the coaching staff will place swimmers in the appropriate groups. If you are unsure of a child’s level, you can bring your swimmer in to be tested or contact the Aquatics Director for questions. An in-person evaluation will ensure that your child will be in the correct class. It only takes a few minutes for an instructor to evaluate a swimmer’s level. Call the Aquatics office for more information or to schedule an appointment to start your swimmer off with the correct class this session.

Ages 18 months to 3 years old

Observation of Lessons

For those little swimmers who are already comfortable in the water! Songs and activities help infants and toddlers further gain confidence and practice their budding basic swimming skills. Starfish skills are introduced and children begin to work more with the instructor to get prepared to move to the next level of swimming and rely less on Mommy and Daddy’s help. A swim diaper and rubber pants are required under a child’s swimsuit.

While we recognize that parents are as thrilled about the progress of their children as the students are, we respectfully ask that parents remain seated on the 6 foot side of the pool bleachers for the duration of your child’s lesson.

Make Up Policy Group swim classes at the Bridgewater JCC enjoy a limited four student to one instructor ratio.

Because of this ratio classes fill up quickly leaving not much option for a make-up class. In order to be considered for a make up class, a doctor’s note must be given to the Aquatics Office. The Aquatics Department cannot guarantee that a makeup class will be available, however every effort will be made to accommodate the need of the individual and that there is space in the class desired.

One makeup class per calendar year is permitted.

YOUTH COURSES (Ages 5 & up) Level 1 Introduction to Water Skills There are no prerequisites for this level. The objectives of Level 1 are to learn basic personal water safety information and skills, to help participants feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. In Level 1, participants learn elementary aquatic skills, which they will build on as they progress through the six Learn-to-Swim levels. At this level, participants begin developing good attitudes about swimming and water safety, good swimming habits and safe practices in and around the water.

Level 4

Stroke Improvement Participants entering this course must have a Level 3 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements in Level 3. The objectives of Level 4 are to develop confidence in the strokes learned thus far and to improve other aquatic skills. Participants improve their skills and increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes (front crawl, elementary backstroke) for greater distances. Students also continue to build upon the scissors kick and dolphin kick by adding the arms for sidestroke and butterfly. The back crawl and the breaststroke are introduced in Level 4, as well as the basics of turning at a wall.

Level 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills Participants entering this course must have a Level 1 certificate or must be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements in Level 1. The objective of Level 2 is to give participants success with fundamental skills. Participants learn to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills. Participants continue to explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back to lay the foundation for future strokes.

The objectives of Level 3 are for participants to learn the survival float, the elementary backstroke and to coordinate the front crawl. They are introduced to the scissors kick and the dolphin kick and build on the fundamentals of treading water. Participants also learn rules for headfirst entries and begin to learn to enter the water headfirst from the side of the pool. (if the water is 9 feet deep or deeper).

AQUATICS TRAINING SCHOOL Course Materials

All class fees include the costs of course materials such as books, pocket masks and certification cards. All materials are distributed on the first day of the class; however, you can have your materials sent to you prior to the start of the course for an additional fee of $15. If you would like this option, please indicate so at the time of registration. All materials must be returned UNMARKED in order to receive a full refund, otherwise you will be charged for the course materials.

Pretests

Some American Red Cross courses such as the Lifeguard Training and WSI courses, require a pretest as part of the course. These pretests typically take place the first scheduled day of the course. Students should check with the Aquatics office to find out the exact time and location of their pretest. Please remember this pretest is MANDATORY and failure to attend will result in a failure of the course with NO refund.

Lifeguard Training Full Course Lifeguard Training Full Course(r.12) The purpose of this course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.

Proof of Age

Pre-requisites for the course

The American Red Cross mandates that candidates show valid proof of age by the second class meeting for those courses that have minimum age requirements. We are not permitted to waive the minimum age requirements for any of our training courses.

• Must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course.

• Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.

•Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.

Certification/Completion of Course

•Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive, feet first or head first to a depth of 6-10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the Object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or stairs.

Although our goal as instructors is to help students successfully complete their certification goals, students are sometimes not able to adequately complete the stated requirements for the course. Payment of the course fee and participation in class does not guarantee certification; students must successfully complete all course objectives in order to be certified.

Lifeguard Training Review Course This course allows a lifeguard to review written and physical skills for Lifeguard Training and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer with an American Red Cross Instructor prior to taking the written and practical portions of the Lifeguard Training recertification test.

Ages 3-7

These lessons are for adults of all levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Adult private lessons are run on a 1-on-1 basis ONLY. Lessons are tailored to the student’s individual needs and are contingent on instructor availability and pool space. The following days and times are when we offer private and semi private lessons weekends beginning the week of September 29 and weekdays beginning September 30.

Kids Private Instruction Learn to Swim private (1 on 1) and semi-private (groups of 2-3 students) instruction is available through the Aquatics Department.

Lessons help to promote and reinforce basic swimming concepts.

30-minute sessions are tailored to the student’s needs. Limited lessons are available and are contingent on instructor availability and pool space. GENERAL INFORMATION JCC Fundraising Efforts The JCC sponsors a host of fundraising events throughout the year that benefit The JCC Scholarship Fund. Some of you unfamiliar with the Scholarship Fund may ask… “What is the JCC Scholarship Fund? How does it help the community? And… why should I contribute?”

We would like to take this opportunity to tell you about the JCC Scholarship Fund and how it helps our members and our community.

Part of the JCC’s mission is to provide programs and services regardless of someone’s ability to pay. We have a process whereby individuals or families experiencing financial difficulties can apply to the JCC for financial assistance for preschool, camp or membership. In 2012, the JCC awarded more than $210,000 in scholarship assistance to individuals and families in need so that they can participate in activities, attend the Blaustein Early Childhood Center and JCC Camp Ruach. Over 1 million in scholarships given out over the last 14 years. The JCC Camp and Preschool Scholarship Program makes it possible for youngsters to participate in JCC activities that they could not otherwise afford. Funds also support services to seniors including a hot lunch, exercise, entertainment and socialization. Scholarship assistance is provided to all who demonstrate financial need, regardless of race, creed, or color.

We hope this provides you with a better understanding of the important role the JCC Scholarship Fund plays in our community, and how simply purchasing a Raffle Ticket can help us fulfill our mission. GENERAL INFORMATION Youth Policies • Children ages 12 and older who are JCC members may enjoy the pool or gymnasium without direct adult supervision WHILE A PARENT IS IN THE BUILDING. • All children under age 12 must be directly supervised by an adult (18 or older).

• You must be 13 and older to use the Fitness Center.

• Teens under 18 years must have parents sign a waiver & consent form in order to use the Fitness Center.

• Teens 13-15 must be accompanied by a parent in order to use the Fitness Center.

• Children 10 or younger must pass a swim test in order to swim in the deep end of the pool.

• Children wearing bubbles or belts are not permitted in the deep end of the pool.

• Lap lanes are available for swimmers who are AGE 10 OR OLDER.

Valuables The JCC is not responsible for lost or stolen articles in the locker room, gym, pool, etc. Please use the “valuables lockers” outside the fitness center or bring a lock to secure your locker while you are in the building.

Locks must be removed after each use to allow other members to use the locker, except for Patrons and Benefactors with “Reserved” lockers.

The JCC is a “Kosher-Sensitive” Facility Kosher Sensitive is defined as: • No mixing of meat and dairy products.

• No eating of meat products with dairy at the same meal (if meat is served, no dairy can be served and vice versa).

• No pork or shellfish products.

• Food served at all SSBJCC programs and meetings, both on site and off site, shall be either dairy, meat (kosher) or pareve (containing neither meat nor dairy) only. There shall be no mixing of milk and meat.

• Members and non-members will be allowed to bring in food from the outside for their own consumption.

• As a courtesy to the wide variety of Jewish practices, no shellfish or pork may be brought on site, and members and non-members must refrain from the mixing of meat and dairy in any context.

Code Of Conduct • All participants should recognize that the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center is dedicated to the welfare of all participants. In order to maintain a comfortable and safe environment, the management of the JCC asks that all of the participants at this facility: • Refrain from the use of foul language, abusive actions or inappropriate behavior.

• Recognize that sportsmanlike conduct, fair play and a cooperative attitude govern behavior at all times.

Make-Up Policy

The Jewish Community Center recognizes the need to serve all of those in the community regardless of financial ability. In order to provide our services to everyone, we offer financial assistance for program fees and membership dues to those who qualify. Class Refund Policies

Program Registration JCC membership in good standing throughout the length of the program is required for member registration. You may register for most programs in person, by mail or by fax. In order to provide the best program quality to our members, it is sometimes necessary to limit the number of participants in a class. Registration will close when that limit is reached. Members receive priority over non-members.

No make-ups, credits or refunds will be given to individuals missing classes due to illness or personal reasons.

The JCC reserves the right to cancel any class or program if attendance or registration does not meet class quota. Full program fee will be returned to those people who have paid.
