Dear Friends of the JCC, Thank you for joining us for Dancing with the J Stars, an evening to support our scholarship fund and to recognize the exceptional contributions of our esteemed honorees Judy & Larry Gross and Sid & Shuey Horowitz, who have demonstrated unwavering support of our mission.

Since opening the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC thirteen years ago, we have given out more than $1,000,000 in scholarship funds to hundreds of families and individuals whose lives have been impacted in countless ways. The effect of this effort in our community cannot be quantified. The stories of our grateful members who tell us the difference the JCC has made in their lives are truly inspiring and keep us passionate about our mission.

Your attendance and contributions this evening, and all those who have contributed to this event in so many ways, help us to continue our important work. The JCC Scholarship Fund sends children to our preschool, to our summer day camp, supports our senior nutritional and exercise program, and supports membership and programs.

We want to thank all of you here tonight. Special thanks to our eight Volunteer Dancers -- David Bernstein, Marsha Chazin, Tom Flynn, Betina Goldberg Rappoport, Karen Kasnetz, Michael Klem, Adam Perle and Shari Pollak -- and the Arthur Murray Dance School dancers, who practiced tirelessly together for the dance competition. We also thank our dancers for the wonderful spirit they brought to this event and for the donations they brought in through family, friends and co-workers. Many thanks to our Committee, and the staff of the JCC for making this evening a success. A very special thank you to our co-chairs Nancy Gorrell and Caryn Kenin.

Finally, we would like to thank our hardworking volunteer Board of Directors and, again the staff of the JCC, for all of our other successful fundraisers, including the Raffle, Golf Outing, 5K Walk/Run, Texas Hold-em, Larry Cubas Basketball Tournament, Dog Day at the J, and Mah Jongg Tournament, all which help us help the community.

“My name is Robin. I am the grandmother of 4, of which 3 are in my custody. It is beyond sad for the reasons, but they are mine and love them more then life itself. There isn't anything I wouldn't do for them.

Last year we had no idea what we were going to do with the children.

They were at that time 3, 5, and 7 years old. The state would only pay a portion of the tuition and had no idea where the rest would come from. I received a call and found out that they were granted a scholarship for the balance. Talk about a miracle, or so I thought.

This year I received a call from JCC Camp Ruach to find out if my grandchildren would be attending camp again this summer. I explained that we didn't have the financial means to do so, as the state was no longer involved. The Director of the camp, who is an amazing woman, connected me to someone at the JCC who could help see if there were any scholarships available. I did, and to my surprise, there was. Now that's a miracle!

Please understand that camp isn't just camp to them. It's an outlet for them to be kids and to be happy because they deserve it.

You maybe asking why am I telling you this story. It is because without donations and contributions -scholarships like the ones my grandchildren received-- will no longer exist. I ask each and every one of you to please contribute any amount they can as you never know who's life you will change. We were blessed and it has changed our lives forever.

I only wish that I could thank the people in person who have contributed and made it possible for my grandchildren to once again attend Camp Ruach.”

“The Senior Program has become a second home to us, a home away from home. We’ve become a family and eagerly look forward to our time together. We’ve become re-acquainted with old friends, made new friends and enjoy being together each week.

On Tuesdays there’s an Intergenerational Program where we, the Grand Friends, join with the kindergarten children to play games, paint, read, and learn about one another.

The Director of the Senior Program, provides the love, warmth and friendship to make all this happen.”

“My Oldest daughter tells me that she can never miss a day of camp. She has a great time from the moment she gets on her bus, throughout the day with her friends, trying new things, her ice pop at the day’s end and her bus ride home.

I just cannot compete with that. Could you? And this year I look forward to watching two of my children on the swim team!”

Our Honorees

JUDY AND LARRY GROSS Judy and Larry became members of our JCC even before its doors officially opened in 1999. Now that they are both retired you can be assured of seeing them here on a regular basis. If asked, they will tell you that they consider the JCC to be their second home. Both of them value the Jewish programming, the exercise classes, and the camaraderie that the JCC offers. Judy has been an active Board of Trustees member since 2007. She was one of the people who was very instrumental in realizing our latest JCC expansion, namely the bubble over the outdoor pool. During their childhoods, Judy and Larry belonged to the YM/YWHA’s, Judy at the 92nd Street, and Larry in Mount Vernon, NY.

When their two children, Sarah and Josh, were growing up they were campers and later counselors at the same location, although the present JCC building did not exist at the time. Prior to having children, Judy and Larry lived for two years in Switzerland and then two years in Israel. They lived and worked on a kibbutz and then in Rehovot, where Larry did research at the Weizmann Institute of Science. During that time, their Rabbi, Shlomo Carlebach, celebrated Judy and Larry’s anniversary by performing a second marriage ceremony for them at the Western Wall. Upon returing to the United States, Judy pursued her dream of becoming a certified music therapist. She worked in that field with special needs children for 30 years and was awarded Teacher of the Year by two different school districts. Judy plays classical guitar and piano.

During this time Larry worked as a research scientist in the field of chemical engineering and polymer material. He presently volunteers his time as a tutor. Besides many outdoor activities, swimming, and international folk dancing, Larry is also an avid woodworker. They both love to travel. Larry has been to more than 50 countries, Judy to more than 30. Together they have visisted 32 of the 58 National Parks.

Judy and Larry are the proud grandparents of two year old Carter and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their 2nd grandchild in March. They feel blessed with their lives and we are blessed to have them as such an important part of the JCC.

Our Honorees SHUEY AND SID HOROWITZ Shuey, born in Washington, D.C. and Sid, born in Perth Amboy, met in high school at a Young Judea convention in North Carolina. They married in 1956 and have lived in Bridgewater for nearly 50 years, serving on numerous social service and Jewish agencies in the wider community. Shuey graduated from Temple University and Rutgers with a MSW in social work. She is a founding member of the Board of Jewish Family Service and founding member of five Somerset County Social Service Agencies including Home Sharing where she served as Executive Director for 20 years.

Sid is past President of Federation, past chair of Federation UJA campaign, past Temple Beth-El President, past President of the ACLU of Somerset County, and past President of People Care Center.

He was Jewish LIFE chair and serves on the Bridgewater Township Environmental Commission. Sid is a retired dentist with a practice in Somerville. Shuey and Sid served on one of the exploratory committees formed to build the JCC. Sid swims everyday and Shuey takes many exercises classes. They have been members of the J since 1999 and say, “It’s wonderful to see the JCC become what it has!”

Shuey and Sid have four children, ten grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Nineteen members of their family reside in Israel and they visit them once a year. We are blessed to have them part of our community and JCC.

We salute the Stars, Judy and Larry Gross & Shuey and Sid Horowitz for all that you do for the community.

DAVID BERNSTEIN David resides in Bridgewater with his wife Bonnie and their three children, Marissa, Ross, and Adam, and his dog, Timber, the best dog ever! He is a principal of Mid State Lumber Corp in Branchburg, New Jersey. David has been a member of the JCC since it's inception in 1999 and currently holds the Secretary position on the Board of Directors. He and his family are long standing members of Temple Sholom in Bridgewater. David enjoys golfing, coaching and spending time with his family and friends. He is looking forward to adding ballroom dancing to his list of hobbies and accomplishments.

TOM E. FLYNN “Coach Tom” was born in Brooklyn, New York and grew up in Flatbush. He attended St. Brendans Grammar School and Midwood High School and one year at Johnson & Wales College in Providence, RI. After college, he served as a New York City police officer for 30 years. He retired and met and married Joan E. Clissold from New Jersey.

Afterwards, he answered a newspaper ad for a swim coach position at the Bridgewater JCC. His wife regularly uses the exercise programs at the “J.” Coach has also done some lifeguarding at the J besides coaching the kids. Coach Flynn began his dancing career at the JCC when he and his wife took a ballroom dancing class in August 2010. Now they are both big fans of the popular TV show “Dancing with the Stars.” His steady dance partner is the bridge – his wife Joan. Coach Flynn’s motto is: “If you want to see the rainbow you have to put up with the rain.”

MARSHA CHAZIN A native of Chester County Pennsylvania, Marsha Chazin began her dancing career as a child, enjoying tap and ballet.

She graduated from Hofstra University with a degree in education, and subsequently taught elementary school for over 20 years and Hebrew school for many. Marsha and her husband, Mark, have three married children and six grandchildren, ranging in age from 1 to 14.

Marsha and Mark have been members of the JCC since it opened. Marsha enjoys taking physical fitness classes, particularly Zumba. She also was a volunteer in the JCC kindergarten class as a guest reader and helper. Elsewhere in the community, Marsha participates with Jewish Family Service, in the women's division of Federation, and has been a volunteer for New Jersey's Court-Appointed Special Advocate program for children in foster care.

Marsha cooks and serves at the SHIP soup kitchen in Somerville once a month. She also performed outreach to incarcerated Jewish women.

Since dancing as a child, Marsha has taken lessons in jazz and ballet. She taught Jackie Sorenson aerobic dance at the West Windsor Adult School. Marsha is a dance enthusiast, and enjoys watching all kinds of dancing, particularly as an avid fan of the televised “Dancing with the Stars”. Marsha says her performance tonight allows her to check off an item high on her bucket list.

KAREN KASNETZ Karen was born in Philadelphia but grew up in East Meadow, New York. She graduated from Cornell University with a degree in human nutrition, and practiced in that field for eight years. Then she spent the next 23 years working for a national healthcare company in various management roles.

Currently, she is the National Sales Director for Proven Healthcare Solutions in Parsippany, New Jersey. Karen is married to Joe (Weinstein) for 29 years and they have three sons. Jonathan, 27, works as an associate for an investment banking firm in Manhattan; David is a business analyst for a legal firm in Washington, DC; and Jordan just finished his freshman year at Tufts University.

Karen and Joe have been members of the “J” since the kids were little. They sent Jordan to Camp Ruach as a camper and later as a counselor. Joe has been on the JCC board for several years and enjoys serving in that capacity.

Karen has never had formal training as a dancer. Her steady dance partner has been Joe! She says this event is a great opportunity to learn new dance moves from a professional instructor and help the “J” at the same time. A quote from Eleanor Roosevelt helped her make her decision to participate in “Dancing with the Stars”: “Do one thing every day that scares you.” Dancing in this event certainly fits the bill for Karen!

MICHAEL KLEM Mike was born in Riverdale, New York. His family moved to Middletown, NJ when he was 18 months old and his parents have lived in the same home ever since. He attended the Middletown Public Schools and is a graduate of Middletown South High School. He is a graduate of Indiana University, Bloomington. Mike has worked at AT&T for 19 years where he is currently the Director of Marketing in their B2B eBusiness organization. Mike lives in Bridgewater, with his wife Jordana and has three children Megan (15), Julia (14), and Sam (8). He enjoys traveling, skiing, and coaching various sports with his children.

Mike and his family have been members of the JCC since 2006. His son Sam attended the preschool beginning with the 2-year-old program and completed kindergarten in the school. Sam has also attended the summer camp since 2007 and is currently enrolled in J-Crew for the 3rd year. Mike’s wife, Jordana, has participated on several fund raising committees for the “J”.

Mike has no formal dance training and has only danced at parties or fundraisers or to pick up girls in college. Mike’s favorite dance is one where he does not hurt himself.

His favorite dance partner is his wife Jordana.

Mike says, “He hopes that his torn lateral meniscus will hold out!”

ADAM PERLE Adam was born and raised in Mountainside, New Jersey. He lives in Bridgewater with his wife, Mandi and his two preschool daughters, Alexis and Marley.

Adam earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland, College Park. He is the Vice President at the Princeton Regional Chamber of Commerce and Princeton Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau, one of the largest Chambers in New Jersey with nearly 900 Members. Prior to assuming his responsibilities at the PRCC in 2006, Adam’s career included work with both non-profit organizations and political campaigns. Adam currently serves on the Board of Directors for Jewish Family & Children Service of Greater Mercer County, the New Jersey Travel Industry Association and the New Jersey Destination Marketing Organization Association.

Adam and his family have been Members of the JCC for more than three years.

Adam’s older daughter, Lexi, attends the Blaustein Early Childhood Center where she is currently in the 4 year old program. Adam’s younger daughter, Marley, is scheduled to enroll in the Blaustein ECC’s 2 year old program in September 2014.

Adam’s wife Mandi, a Grade 3 public school educator in Wayne, is very involved in the Blaustein ECC’s Parent Teacher Organization. From time to time one can even spot Mandi or Adam in the JCC’s Fitness Center.

Adam says he has had “zero formal dance training. None. Zip-zero-zilch!” Never the less, he is a very close follower of the JCC pre-school dance program. He has seen Miss Dawn and Miss Rachel’s wonderful recitals for each of the last two years.

He also has plans with his family’s ballerina, Lexi, to see the State Ballet Theatre of Russia perform Cinderella at McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton next year. Adam says his favorite dance partner is his wife Mandi. His favorite type of dancing “is the kind that gets me close to her!”

Adam’s motto is: “It always seems impossible until it is done.” – Nelson Mandela

SHARI POLLAK Shari was born in Huntington, New York, and lived there until she was 10 years old. She moved to Bridgewater and went to and graduated from Bridgewater Raritan High School East. She attended the University of Rhode Island where she graduated with a degree is communications. When she graduated from college, she began working for her familie’s plastic company, Injectron Corporation.

Shari has been teaching fitness classes at the JCC from 2006 to present. She teaches Spin, Bodypump, CXWORX, Seniors and personal training. Shari has three children, Alex, Evan and Danielle Kalen, a dog named Scooter, and a boyfriend, Mike Mistove.

For Shari, the JCC has been not only her second home, but a family affair. She has been part of the JCC since 1978 from belonging to the pool club, to camp counselor (1984-1989), to individual member, to ultimately, an employee. Her three children have and still attend the camp and are counselors, and she teaches fitness classes and personal trains along with being the JCC Fitness coordinator. Her parents are JCC members.

As for Shari’s dance experience, she says she loves to dance and have a good time.

She has always enjoyed watching her parents dance together, and she enjoys dancing with her dad.

Shari’s motto is: "Work hard, play hard, laugh hard and enjoy!"

BETINA GOLDBERG RAPPOPORT Betina was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She grew up in East Brunswick, NJ from grade three. As a social worker, her entire career has been dedicated to working with children, almost exclusively with adolescents doing protective work and therapy. Since 1988, she has been a social worker working predominantly in schools.

Betina has three children and three step-children. Her children vary in ages from 15-22.

Betina has been a member of the JCC for years. Her daughter Hannah was in the first preschool graduation class. She has been attending fitness classes forever and loves being at the JCC. She helped work on the President's fund raiser.

Betina has always enjoyed dance. When she first came to this country, her mother enrolled her in a modern dance class. She was petrified of the teacher. The teacher was a very strict Austrian who banged a drum and yelled. She tried to keep step, but she was driven by fear. Not to be deterred, years later as a teenager, she enrolled with the same teacher, and by that time, she took it in stride. She also took one semester of modern dance at Douglass College. Betina says, “ I am not a natural dancer, but I love to dance, especially to Latin music. Zumba is her favorite dance. “I think I enjoy Zumba so much because of the music and because I don't have to worry how I look!”

Betina says, “I agreed to do this, because I love the JCC and want to support it in any way I can. I will do my best, but expect to have lots of fun learning and practicing the dance. If I end up dancing with a Patrick Swayze look alike, life will be grand!”

The Professional Staff at The Arthur Murray Studio MICHELLE GARCED, along with her husband Emilio, is co-owner of two Arthur Murray Dance Center locations in Somerset and Middlesex counties. For more than 37 years, she has been involved with ballroom dancing in one form or another. Whether developing dance professionals, coaching, competing and later judging competitions, opening then developing and operating the studios, she has always loved her “work”. Especially close to her heart, however, is the fact that she has personally taught literally thousands of people how to dance over these many years and feels enjoyment at having affected a positive change in their lives through the art of social and competitive ballroom dancing!

AILEEN MATOS has been an Arthur Murray dance professional for more than 15 years and has the reputation of being one of the “most lovable” instructors! Her kind and gentle ways (with a little tough sprinkled in) help her students to always gain the confidence they came in looking for. Her students tend to stay with her for a very long time and progress into the higher, more polished levels of ballroom dancing! She manages all this while being a single mom and assisting with the administrative duties of the Green Brook location. She looks forward to having her own Arthur Murray Dance Center in the future!

ELIZABETH DIAZ is a graduate of Rutgers University and has been a ballroom dance professional for several years. Her love of dancing and her desire to help people make Liz a perfect personality for teaching ballroom dancing! Not only is Liz a fabulous instructor and dancer but she also has developed a non-profit organization of which she is president. Along with her teaching responsibilities, she assists in the administrative duties of the Highland Park location. She is truly an asset to our Arthur Murray dance world and her students really enjoy the benefits of working with Liz! BEATA MIHALO has been an Arthur Murray dance professional for more than 15 years, and along with Aileen, kept on teaching her students right up until the eighth month of her pregnancy!!! Needless to say, she has been one of our most valuable instructors over these many years, having taught in both locations. She has always maintained the look of a fashion model and her dancing and teaching style have always reflected her polish and flair!

MAIRA PINEIDA is an Arthur Murray dance professional who comes to us from the world of Swing Dancing – most notably West Coast Swing. She has been involved in this specialized area of social dancing for the greater part of her life as an instructor as well as a coach, and also sits on the judging panel of many competitive Swing Dance events. Maira possesses a wonderful, fun-spirited attitude and her students enjoy their lessons with her immensely – whether she is instructing group sessions or private sessions.

MATTHEW HARKINS is an Arthur Murray dance professional who is also a student at Rutgers University. It is in this capacity as a member of the Rutgers Ballroom Dance Team that he travels and competes in the Collegiate Division all around the country. Aside from his University affiliation, Matthew is one of the instructors in our schools who specializes in both the American as well as the International Styles of Ballroom Dancing. If you give Matthew a free minute, you will find him utilizing it on a dance floor! He is a very wonderful, dedicated and much loved member of our Arthur Murray dance team.

JONATHAN DANESHPOUR is an Arthur Murray dance professional for several years now, and before that, had been teaching Salsa. He is a most dedicated, trustworthy and focused instructor who always gets the best out of his students. He is also pursuing his graduate degree, while doing a fantastic job with his dance students. He takes very seriously his responsibility in giving each student the value and progress expected, and goes out of his way to deliver that promise. Jonathan is well loved by his students at the Highland Park location.

KAROL KALINOWSKI is an Arthur Murray dance professional who has been dancing and competing in ballroom dancing since he was a young boy in Poland. He is also a member of the Rutgers Ballroom Dance Team and is a wonderful addition to our Highland Park location. Karol continues to train and compete with his amateur partners and has been consistently achieving top placement at all the events! Karol’s students love his style, his elegant flair – and his very witty and positive attitude is highly prized among students and staff alike! Karol is a well -loved member of the Arthur Murray team.

ROBERT FRIEDMAN, along with his wife Michelle, has been dancing for more than 18 years. They first appeared on the scene at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio of Highland Park and, basically, never left. Besides dancing, competing and performing at a very high level over these many years, they have developed themselves into top quality Ballroom DJ’s and enjoy a thriving business that they themselves have created! Their music services, which extend far beyond the normal realm of “DJ”, are much in demand among amateurs and professionals alike. Robert and Michelle Friedman are also members of the Jewish Community Center where we will be dancing this evening.

The JCC would like to thank the Arthur Murray Dance Studios especially owners Emilio & Michelle Garced for the wonderful dance instruction they provided! We would also like to thank the Professional Dance Partners for their generous support. This evening would not have been possible without all of you.

Cindy Berkow, Master of Ceremonies Cindy Berkow is Vice President of Sales for Rand Diversified, a leader in point of purchase displays, packaging and fulfillment where she has worked for the past 19 years. Cindy grew up in Metuchen and lives in Mahwah with her husband. An avid sports fan, she plays tennis, golf and loves professional football. Her newest passion is dancing.

Cindy is very involved in many charities and has been a supporter of the JCC golf outing. Most recently, Cindy danced her way to a mirror ball trophy for a diabetes dance fundraiser that took place last year. Although not competing in this event, Cindy is happy to be part of this event as MC and member of the Dancing with the JCC Stars Committee.

Cindy’s brother and his family live in Bridgewater and are very active in the JCC. She hopes to bring an evening of fun and lots of money to the Dancing with the JCC Stars event.

Our Esteemed Judges Jill Hirsch:

Jill Hirsch has more than 20 years experience as a certified competition and pageant judge for national competitions in the areas of dance and baton. She holds NJTA and vocational certifications, and has training from Dance Educators of America and Broadway Dance Center. She has won numerous dance awards and has performed in Atlantic City, Walt Disney World and on RCCL cruises. Jill also has choreographed pageants, local theater productions, and competitive teams.

Dawn VanNess: Dawn has been a dance teacher for the past 16 years. She has judged numerous elite dance team auditions and she has been a judge for several “Nutcracker” auditions.

Dawn is the JCC Dance School director and lives in Branchburg with her husband and two children.

Jack Wuensch: Jack is an Arthur Murray student who recently participated in a NJ state team match as well as performing spotlight dances at fundraising events with Arthur Murray in Ridgewood NJ. He recently advanced to bronze 2 level and his favorite dances are Fox Trot and Cha Cha.
