Dear Friends, It is truly an honor for the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC to have been at the center of both the Jewish and the local community for the past 17 years. We would like to take a moment of your time to reflect and share with you a few of the many memorable moments experienced at our JCC during 2016. 2016 welcomed many new families to our JCC Family and we thank those families who have been with us for many years – some since we opened our doors in 1999! Camp Ruach, The Blaustein Early Childhood Center, J-Crew After School Program, and the Bridgewater Tide Swim Team all experienced a great year, and continue to strive to provide excellence in children and teen programming. Connecting to and supporting Israel are very important to the J, from our annual Celebrate Israel event, to welcoming families from Israel who are in New Jersey while a loved one receives cancer treatments. We had many successful fundraising events this year, enabling us to grow our muchneeded JCC Scholarship Fund: • • • • • •
Mah Jongg and Texas Hold’em Tournaments 15th Annual Golf and Tennis Outing Dog Day and Community Block Party 5K/Family Walk organized by our Teens Beer Festival and Designer Handbag Bingo Big Raffle, and crowd favorite, Dancing with the Stars
The JCC is extremely proud of how we help the community beyond the walls of our JCC. The annual March Mitzvah Madness initiative involves many of our program areas leading a mitzvah (good deed) project to benefit numerous non-profit agencies in the local community. • The JCC has responded to the growing demand for programs for children and adults with Special Needs: • Our Third Annual Prom for Adults with Special Needs was a sold-out event enjoyed by a record 350 guests! • The Rising Tide Special Olympics Swim Team is now in its fourth season with 30 swimmers. • We offer adaptive swim lessons to over 40 children with Special Needs. • We now have a full time Special Needs Director on staff to lead and further enhance this very important program area. We look forward to offering new initiatives, including an adult internship program and a monthly Sunday respite program. The JCC strives to keep our Senior population engaged by providing much needed socialization, education and health & wellness. Jewish LIFE – our collaborative, adult education program, continues to bring the best in adult Jewish education to our community We participate in many collaborations with local Social Service agencies, including an Aphasia Group, United Way Caregiver’s Coalition and JFS’ Autism Support Group for Youth, to mention a few. The expansion of the JCC’s second floor is well underway and we expect this project to be completed in the first quarter of 2017. The expansion brings beautiful new community space for JCC programs, special events and private parties; a Holocaust Memorial and Education Center, and additional program space for our J-Crew and Blaustein Early Childhood Center. The second phase of our expansion will feature enhancements in the main JCC building, including a new Fitness Center and new Group Fitness and Spin Studios. The final phase of our expansion includes new, expanded Locker Rooms. We are so pleased to share these accomplishments with you. We are thrilled at the prospects the New Year brings our community, and again, we thank you for your support. Best wishes for a peaceful and prosperous 2017!

SARA WASSERMAN
Early Childhood Director x 9022 swasserman@ssbjcc.org
Who are We? Here at the Blaustein Early Childhood Center we work on building partnerships with families. While your children are here, they will be in the loving care of our experienced and enthusiastic teachers.
What Do We Do Here? When you choose the Blaustein Early Childhood Center for your child, you’re choosing a school within an incredible facility. Yoga in the gym, planting in the garden, exploring the campgrounds, swimming in the pools, and specials throughout the multipurpose rooms in the building make our school experience different and exciting. We use all of the indoor and outdoor facilities to enhance learning, playing and growing. The JCC’s two indoor heated swimming pools are used year round by our children.
What are we learning? A child’s early school years are incredibly important as they work on emotional, social, physical and cognitive development. Our goals are to support each child along that journey. We value play as an important component of learning, so we plan and encourage activities for children that inspire curiosity and a sense of wonder. They learn how to interact with their teachers, play with their peers and discover what they are interested in as they develop their individual personalities.
We recognize that each child has their own timetable for development. Our program provides an environment that stimulates learning and social growth within the framework of each child’s developmental needs. We believe children thrive in a safe, nurturing, healthy and respectful environment with teachers that are well trained in child development. Our child-centered curriculum integrates literacy, mathematical thinking, science, social skills as well as gross and fine motor development into all parts of your child’s day. Children are given opportunities to make choices, to work together cooperatively and to express themselves in many ways.

We believe that young children are capable and competent. Our work is to discover individual strengths and enhance learning through a variety of topics and themes that expand upon those skills. We encourage children to try and accomplish tasks on their own before asking for help so that they can begin to feel a sense of confidence and pride in their achievements. Each of our teachers work to create a comfortable, loving, respectful relationship with each student.

Our teachers also work to develop and nurture positive social relationships within the classroom. Strong and open relationships between teachers, directors, and families are vital to the success of this school.
Jewish Learning The Blaustein Early Childhood Center welcomes children of all religious backgrounds, nationalities and cultures. We recognize that many of the children in our program are not Jewish; the foundational ideas of kindness, respect and responsibility for one another are the types of Jewish values we teach. We welcome children and families of other beliefs and denominations, and believe that children learn from one another. Understanding that people have different beliefs is an important concept for children, and it is openly discussed and validated in the classroom.

Build upon what you learned over the Winter and fine-tune your strokes to stay in shape and get ready for summer swim competition. If you are interested in joining the Tide Spring Training program, please contact Coach Rich for a tryout: rromero@ssbjcc.org. There is always at least one lifeguard on duty to ensure that you, your family and your guests are safe and that the pool area is clean and organized. Lifeguards can answer your general questions regarding policies and schedules.
About Our Pools Indoor Pool
The Indoor Pool is a 5 lane, 25 yard (75’) competitive-style pool. This pool is open year round to all holding a JCC membership. The depth in the zero access area of the pool goes from zero to 4 feet, and the main part of the pool goes to 6 feet in depth. Our indoor pool is the only pool in the area running on a salt sanitization system. Feel the difference! Our indoor pool also uses UV technology to maintain the highest standards of water chemistry. The water temperature is maintained at a relaxing 84 degrees. Lessons are held in our indoor pool year round.
Bubble/Outdoor Pool Our bubble pool is a 5 lane, 33 yard competitive-style pool. This pool is primarily utilized by our swim team, the JCC Bridgewater Tide, from mid-September to mid-May. The bubble structure is taken down for the summer for our Summer Swim Club. The pool features an intermediate pool which ranges from 1-3 feet, the main pool 3-6 feet with slide, and two kiddie pools that are one foot deep. The pool is kept at 82 degrees year round. The bubble/ outdoor pool has a commercial salt sanitization system and also uses UV technology to keep the pool water as clean as possible.
Group Swim Lessons 6 Months - 5 Years Parent and Child Aquatics (6 months - 21/2 years) Parents and children learn together to increase a child’s comfort level in the water and build a foundation of basic skills, such as arm and leg movements and breath control. The three levels are fun-filled and help introduce water safety concepts, encouraging a healthy recreational habit that your entire family can enjoy.

JOY MCINTYRE
Fitness Director x 9025 jmcintyre@ssbjcc.org
JFitClub Members Spotlight I finished the marathon in 6hrs and 10 minutes and the feeling of accomplishment was overwhelming! If a marathon is in your future, this is definitely one to consider. The crowd support, entertainment and experiencing the five boroughs on foot was unbelievable. The support I received from family, friends and co-workers was truly amazing. I was also very lucky to have a great running partner, Debra Distasi, who encouraged me with every “step” during my training. Most importantly, I could not have done any of this without the strong support of my husband, Joe, my daughter, Ava and my JCC Family!
Deb Hansch Amy Hathaway “If you can dream it, you can do it.” - Walt Disney I began my journey prepping for the 2016 NYC Marathon in December 2015 at the time I entered the marathon lottery. I was turning 50 in 2016 and wanted to do something memorable. On March 8, 2016 I received the email confirmation that I had been picked to run! Immediately I began researching marathon training programs to ensure I made the most of the 8 months I had to prepare. Once I had decided on the right plan to fit my work and home schedule, I made sure to track my progress using a free application on my iPhone. The training plan encouraged me to use other forms of exercise, in addition to running, to ensure my muscles and my mind would be fit enough to endure the 26.2 miles.
The JCC fitness culture has been a part of my life for a long time. That fitness culture includes the many, many excellent instructors, class offerings and support systems extraordinaire. This long term relationship with the JCC has lead me to a super retirement where I can enjoy skiing, hiking and stand up paddling with my husband. Thanks Joy McIntyre and all of the other instructors that offer world class Les Mills BodyPump classes....and my other favorite class, SPIN! And a special shout out to the entire cast of “fitness buddies” who attend BodyPump with me and inspire me to work a little harder every class! The JCC is truly the place to be.
Being a member of the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum JCC made it very easy for me to adhere to my training plan, and I relied on advice from the fitness staff along the way (Jane Schneiderman, Sandra Babalis and Julie Caliman). I took BodyPump at least twice a week, ran four days a week and sprinkled in Spin and Yoga when I could. As the months went on and my running periods became longer, I had to make sure I was eating as healthy as possible and taking care not to overstrain my muscles. The entire experience not only strengthened my body, it strengthened my willpower, my mind and my courage.

Judy Batalion, White Walls A Memoir about Motherhood, Daughterhood and the Mess in Between Tuesday, May 16 • 7:00pm Location: SSBJCC Fee: $5 (includes bagel “and”)
Judy Batalion grew up in a house filled with piles of junk and layers of dust, suffocated by old magazines, swivel chairs, and VHS tapes obsessively gathered by her hoarder mother. At the first chance, she escaped the clutter to create a new identity - made of order, regimen, and clean white walls - until she found herself enmeshed in life’s biggest chaos: motherhood. Confronted with the daunting task of raising a daughter after her own dysfunctional childhood, Judy reflected on her upbringing and the lives of her mother and grandmother, both Holocaust survivors. What she discovered astonished her. Told with heartbreaking honesty and plenty of humor, Judy’s poignant account of stuff and survival explores navigating the messiness of motherhood, how trauma passes through generations, and the indelible marks that others and daughters make on each other’s lives. Judy Batalion studied at Harvard and worked as a curator and comedian in London before settling in New York. She was a columnist for the New York Times and has appeared in numerous publications and magazines.
