Dear Friends...

Dear Friends, On behalf of the Board of Directors and Staff, we want to welcome and Thank You for joining us for our 5th Annual Dancing with the Stars. We want to congratulate and thank tonight’s dancers who represent the heart and soul of the JCC: Laura Brathwaite, Bryan Grossman, Carole Katz, Steve Lieberman, Jonathan Moran, Kate Sugarman, Steve Terk and Sara Wasserman. We would also like to thank their Arthur Murray Dance School Professional partners. Each dancer has played an important part in the success of this event and we thank all of them for the extraordinary time and effort they have given to ensure that this event is a success. We thank the dancers’ families, friends and business associates who supported them by being here tonight and through placing ads and well wishes in this Journal. We especially want to acknowledge Caryn Kenin and Marsha Chazin for their leadership and tireless dedication to the J and this event.

While we recognize that this is a great time to get together and connect or reconnect, it also gives us a chance to share with you all of the wonderful things the J has been able to accomplish over the past year, most of which would not be possible without the generous support from people like you. All of the proceeds from tonight’s event goes to support our Scholarship Fund. These monies provide financial assistance and subsidies so that nobody is ever turned away for an inability to pay. This is so critical because the J offers people a place to belong and improve their quality of life. We hear hundreds of stories of how the J helped someone through a difficult time or made a difference in their lives -- whether they were an older adult who needed a place to socialize with friends and stay healthy; or was a person with special needs who needed a place to be with people who cared; or were a young family who needed affordable child care and families to connect with; or an Israeli family who wants to feel connected to Israel. And of course, whose child didn’t learn to swim at the J? As we celebrate our seventeenth year, our Board and Staff have been very busy working on the plans that will bring us our newly renovated second floor and fitness area. In addition, the second floor will become the home to our Special Needs Department, Senior Programming, J-Crew After School Program, and our new Community Room. We are very excited that we will be able to provide so many more programs and services that will make a difference in the quality of life for so many people in the community. We are so pleased and grateful that you have joined us for our journey. We hope you will be delighted with what we continue to accomplish and that we can count on your support in the future.

About the JCC

The Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center is a non-sectarian agency serving more than 5,000 residents of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties. It has been a priviledge for us to serve our community since we opened our doors 17 years ago. The JCC is first and foremost a Jewish social service agency. We offer the community a wide variety of programs for individuals of all ages -- from our babies to our seniors -- it’s all here at the JCC. The JCC provides scholarship assistance to those in need in our local community. We are extremely proud that each year The JCC Scholarship Fund awards over $210,000 in financial aid.

Whether it be for a child with special needs to attend our summer camp...or an Israeli family here for cancer treatment for a loved one to send their children to our preschool…or a senior to participate in wellness activities…or for a young adult with special needs to swim on the Rising Tide Special Olympics Swim Team… our mission is to help all those who need assistance and support in order to participate in JCC programs and services. Membership dues and program fees alone do not support the operation of our Center. We greatly depend on the generosity of our members, businesses and friends in the community who enable us to fulfill our mission.

The JCC has awarded more than $2.4 million in financial assistance since 1999. Thank you for making this possible.

Thank you, once again, for welcoming Gianni to Camp Ruach. After the initial day of routine change, he had a blast. Thank you to the JCC for the support you’ve always shown us, and for your sensitivity and for understanding the overwhelming needs of raising a child on the spectrum as a single mom. I was able to work and breathe easier the week before summer school started. Gianni has been asking on his iPad to go back to camp several times a week. I told him camp is all done for now, but we’ll see you at the pool! Thanks, again, you guys are awesome! Todah Rabah!

Gianni’s Mother, Jessica It had been very easy this summer getting my kids up each morning. They were so excited about their plans for their day at Camp Ruach. They'd come home singing the songs and telling stories of their adventures at camp. My son, Tate couldn't stop wandering around the house rehearsing his lines and singing the soundtrack from the play Annie that he took part in. The staff at Camp Ruach make an impact on everyone they come in contact with. The counselors are fantastic, friendly, fun and most of all engaging. From the bottom of my heart I thank you all for giving my children a camp they can call home. A place to run to when school lets out. A place where they can be themselves because they know they are embraced regardless. They are already planning to return next year. I love having the confidence while I'm at work that the children are able to be active and social in a safe and fun environment. I wish every child in the world could be lucky enough to have a Camp Ruach experience! Thank you for all that you have done for us.

The Hyman Family The JCC Blaustein Early Childhood Center has become part of our family over the past four years – it is truly our second home. In our family with two working parents, our days are long and we take comfort in knowing that they are getting the best early education available from the ECC. Every day the children learn about new things, play and exercise. They also have access to other wonderful activities throughout the day, such as yoga, swim and music! However, out of all those positives about the ECC, nothing is more important than the love the children are shown by their teachers and staff every single day. The ECC is above and beyond what we had expected and we are so very thankful to have this wonderful school and the community of friends that have come with it. We love that Matthew is learning about Jewish values and how to treat other people. It’s all so very important, no matter what you believe in. We still have a few years and children left to make their course through the ECC, but it will be a sad day when the Panas family doesn’t visit the ECC daily!

Leigh Ann Panas I want to send a huge thank you to all of the wonderful staff of the JCC. I truly appreciate the patience, enthusiasm, attention to detail and personal touches you showed and put into the planning of our party! You made our daughter, Elana’s Sweet 16 a beautiful and memorable event. Eli worked with me on every detail, no matter how small or large, to ensure that her party was special, personalized and a classy event within my budget. We were not familiar with the JCC prior to booking this party, yet we were treated like family from day one. We were also thrilled to learn how much the JCC does for the special needs community. Eli and the JCC staff are exceptional people and were filled with enthusiasm and excitement about her party. It was a beautiful night with great food, great music and very happy guests. Elena's smile said it all. Thank you Eli and the wonderful JCC Family!!

The Mazzeo Family After over 50 years of living in New York, my husband David and I decided to move to New Jersey to be nearer our children and grandchildren. We decided to go the JCC to see what it had to offer, since we had heard so many really good things about it. What a smart decision that was! Our first encounter was with Sarah, who explained the programs that were offered for seniors and gave us membership information and a tour. She is wonderful, kind and smart and enthusiastic about JCC. We joined and found programs that worked for us. David, who had a stroke, works with the personal trainers, and we also attend many interesting seminars and some shows.

All the staff is amazing. Jamie at the front desk is extremely helpful in "all JCC matters". Not only does she treat us royally, I see her give the same treatment to all who need her help when they come in. She is a perfect meet and greet professional and an asset to the J. And then there is Lisa, and it was truly love at first meeting! Not only does she do an outstanding job putting together programs, she has the ability to connect with all the people who attend the various programs and everyone loves her. Lisa is special… she goes out of her way to make you feel comfortable.

Overall - the J is amazing. Every staff member that walks by greets you with a smile and a hello and a Shalom. Whatever time you are there the special feeling of what a great place this is shines through! The children are happy, the fitness center is buzzing, the programs are great. The JCC has been a tremendous part in making us feel comfortable in our new community. David and I thank everyone involved!

Laura was born in Chicago and moved to Brooklyn when she was 10. During her 12 year career in the Air Force, she spent the last six years working in Flight Medicine and teaching new recruits to be Aerospace Medical Technicians and EMTs. It was in the Air Force that she met her husband, Lee and they have been married for 30 years. Laura and Lee have two beautiful and successful children, Eric and Christina, who both live in Manhattan. Laura and Lee moved to New Jersey in 2006.

As a proud graduate of Fordham Law, Laura was a practicing Corporate and Real Estate Attorney with an interest in Health Law. She has always been interested in fitness and its role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. After too many idle days, she was encouraged to become a fitness instructor and landed a job at the JCC. She enjoys teaching the JCC Seniors Water Fitness and BODYVIVE. She believes that everyone can benefit from Water Fitness, because water has the ability to condition the heart and strengthen the musculature, while reducing stress on the joints. She especially enjoys working with Seniors because she wants to help them to enjoy healthy lives with as few aches and pains as possible.

Laura Brathwaite

Laura has always loved to dance and has spent many happy days wistfully watching her son Eric, who is a dancer and performer. She is a fan of television’s Dancing With The Stars and is excited to now have the opportunity to compete in the JCC’s own version of the show, especially to support the JCC Scholarship Fund -- such a worthy cause. Laura enjoys working at the JCC; the people are warm, caring and welcoming – it’s a nice way to spend your time!

Bryan Grossman was born in Brooklyn, raised in Manalapan and now resides in Bridgewater with his wife, Florence, and their daughter, Sadie (6). Bryan graduated from the University of Pennsylvania before completing his MBA in Corporate Finance and Operations Management from New York University. He is currently a Director of Relationship Management and Financial Services at Aon Corporation.

Bryan and his family are extremely proud members of the JCC community where Sadie graduated Kindergarten from the Blaustein Early Childhood Center and has been at Camp Ruach for the past three summers. They can often be found by the JCC pool on summer weekends. Bryan is a member of the JCC Board of Directors. Beyond the JCC, Bryan and his family are also very involved in the broader Jewish community. Bryan is a former trustee at Temple Sholom, where he currently sits on the Finance Committee. He also proudly represented the Blank Leadership Fellows and the Jewish Federation on a mission to Israel this past February.

Bryan Grossman

Bryan is excited to raise money for the JCC Scholarship Fund so that other families can enjoy the JCC programming as much as his family does. He is extremely grateful for the support of his friends and family, and hopes to make them proud with his performance!

Carole Katz and her husband Barry have been residents of Bridgewater for the last 26 years. They have a daughter, Michelle; son-in-law, Jason; son, Jon; soon-to-be daughter-in-law, Casey; grandson, Mason; and granddaughter, Meadow. Barry is a neuroradiologist with University Radiology. For the last few years Carole and Barry, along with their son, Jon, have run their innovative shoe company, Ektio.

Carole and Barry have been members of the JCC since it first opened. They have enjoyed the opportunities it has provided for fitness and meeting people, and they feel it has added so much to living in Bridgewater. You can usually find Carole 3-4 times a week participating in Zumba classes at the J! In fact, that’s where she was “tapped” to join JCC Dancing with the Stars!

Carole’s passions have always been in the arts; drawing, painting, dancing, writing and language. She is a portrait artist currently studying with Master Portrait Artist Marvin Mattelson at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Carole does commissions as well as fine art paintings, and the JCC gave Carole the opportunity to display her art in the hallway exhibition space, which was a wonderful opportunity to showcase her artwork.

Carole Katz

She is so excited to be a part of the JCC Dancing with the stars and to have the opportunity to learn ballroom dancing with Danny, her Arthur Murray professional dance partner.

Steve has lived in New Jersey since 1973, long enough to consider him a true New Jerseyan, but not long enough to lose his New York City accent! He attended Harpur College (now Binghamton University) in upstate New York, where he met his wife, Irene. They have been married for 43 years ago and have raised two children. Mark is married and living in Gulfport, Mississippi where he works as a news Executive Producer for the local television station, and Rachel, is an actuary living in Seattle.

Steve has been a local attorney in Somerville his entire career. He has been involved in a number of charitable causes within the Jewish world and the local community. He has been President of the Jewish Federation of SHAW since 2014. Steve is a past Board member and President of Middle Earth, a social service agency designed to help troubled youth. He has been a volunteer attorney for over 25 years with the Free Legal Clinic run by the Somerset County chapter of the ACLU. He has served on the Board of Directors of Somerset-Sussex Legal Services, and for many years has been the Volunteer Legal Advisor to the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Somerset County and to HomeSharing.

Steve has been an active member and supporter of the JCC for many years. Before becoming an avid road cyclist, he could be seen in the early mornings swimming laps in the indoor pool.

For the past 10 years, Steve has been cycling around the tri-county area almost every day.

Steve Lieberman

Steve has always enjoyed dancing even though his sense of rhythm is to move on the offbeat (or his sense of rhythm is to move to his own drummer). To celebrate his term as President of Temple Beth-El in the early 2000s, Steve and Irene took dance classes at the JCC and then thrilled the congregation with a stunning Tango. He is thrilled to be coming out of “dance retirement” to support the Dancing with the JCC Stars, and hopes he can get through his routine without forgetting his steps or tripping over his own feet -- or his partners.

Jonathan was born and raised in Staten Island, New York. He attended Rutgers University as an undergraduate, where he met his wife, Michelle. After completing his studies, Jonathan became employed as a paralegal for the New York City Law Department. Inspired by what he observed, Jonathan decided to pursue a law degree. Continuing to work full time at the Law Department, he enrolled at New York Law School where he earned his J.D. Jonathan continues to work for the New York City Law Department as a senior counsel and trial attorney in its Special Litigation Unit.

Currently, Jonathan and Michelle live in Somerville with their two sons, David (4 ½) and Brandon (2). Their family became active JCC members last summer when David enrolled in the Early Childhood Center as a “Busy Bee 3”. Since then, they have enjoyed the many school events showcasing the wonderful learning taking place under the skillful guidance of the many talented educators the JCC is so lucky to have.

During the summer, you can often find the Morans pool-side, trying to convince two David and Brandon-shaped prunes to come out of the water to have lunch!

Jonathan Moran

Jonathan’s greatest pleasure in his spare time is playing and spending time with his children. Nothing makes him happier. He is very excited to be a part of this season’s Dancing with the JCC Stars and hopes to make his family proud.

Kate grew up in Manalapan and after marrying her high school sweetheart, she headed north to Somerset County. The Sugarman Family has been Bridgewater residents since 1997. Kate, a local realtor with Weichert Realtors, and husband Barry, an attorney, celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary this year. Their children, Sami (22) is finishing up her last year at Rowan University, studying to become an elementary school teacher, and David (20) is a junior at Indiana University studying Sports Broadcast Journalism.

Kate has been a member of the JCC since before the building existed. She was a member of the “Talamini Swim Club” when it was just the pool and the original “snack shack”! Kate says the JCC has always a great place to socialize with friends and family.

The JCC is truly a second home for the entire Sugarman family! Kate is a regular in the Fitness Center and enjoys many of the exercise programs offered. Sami works in the Babysitting Room, David enjoys shooting hoops, and Barry will make an appearance every now and again!

Kate would like to thank all of her family and friends, especially the JCC staff who put a bit of peer pressure on her, LOL, for cheering her on tonight. Kate has no prior formal dance experience, but is always up for some fun for a great cause. And the Dancing with the Stars fundraiser is just that!

Steve was born in North Adams, MA and raised in West Haven, CT, where he resided for 37 years. In 1995, Bayer HealthCare relocated his family to NJ, where they settled in to their current home in Bridgewater. Steve is married to his beautiful and very fit wife of 32 years, Elyse, whom he met in 1982 while attending a Jewish singles dance in NYC. Steve and Elyse have three children: Mitchell, an attorney for Arch Insurance Group in NYC, who resides in Denville, NJ with his new wife Ashley; Brian, a security consultant for Accenture, lives in Wash., DC, with his girlfriend Beth; and Heather, newly engaged and a technology consultant for Deloitte and a part time spin instructor, living in Alexandria, VA, with her fiancé Jon. Steve and Elyse are Star Members of the JCC and have been active since its opening in 1999. Steve was a “founding father” of the Men’s Basketball program and started a teen travel team that competed against other JCC’s. The JCC has been a part of Steve’s life since he was a teenager. He was a member of the New Haven JCC traveling basketball team for 3 years, culminating in his being chosen to represent the USA in the 1976 Pan American Maccabiah Olympic games in Lima, Peru. Steve volunteered his time to the JCC Maccabi Games, where he coached JCC Bridgewater Boys and Girls Basketball Teams. Steve served on the JCC Golf Committee and worked with the JCC staff on the Purim Carnival . The JCC has been a home away from home for his family, with Elyse having been involved in the pre-school and a very active participant in all facets of the fitness program. His children held a wide variety of jobs at the JCC. As for Steve, you can often find him taking a spin class or working out in the Fitness Center!

Steve Terk

Talking with Steve, you realize he has dancing in his blood. He speaks fondly of how much his parents loved to dance the Jitterbug. He observed how much fun and enjoyment dancing brought them and has approached this competition and fundraising event with the same enthusiasm. He knows his parents will be watching over him with smiles and he will work hard to make them proud. Steve is looking forward to dancing with his partner Jazmin, and wishes the best of luck to all his fellow “Season 5” participants!

Sara Wasserman is the JCC’s Early Childhood Director, responsible for overseeing the Blaustein Early Childhood Center. Sara joined the JCC this past July, however she was so eager to join the JCC family that she agreed to Dancing with the JCC Stars before she officially started working! That’s pure dedication!

Sara says her professional goal is to improve upon the wonderful community at the Birnbaum JCC and Blaustein Early Childhood Center. “There is such a wonderful sense of family at the Blaustein Early Childhood Center and I feel extremely fortunate to be part of such a welcoming educational institution.”

Sara joined the JCC from Montclair State University, where she was a faculty member and instructor in the Department of Early Childhood, Elementary and Literacy Education. She has worked as a pre-school teacher and has presented at professional development seminars to early childhood educators and directors.

Sara Wasserman

She resides in Livingston with her husband, Jeff and their two children, Chase and Jolie. Sara feels the “ridiculous” amount of years she has spent in school (college, grad school and more) has prepared her to learn something new…dance! Spending every day in the Blaustein Early Childhood Center with the super cute kids is the best part of her job. Will Dancing with the Stars be even better? She thanks everyone who has come out to support her in red!

Master of Ceremonies Randy Berkow is a New Jersey native who grew up in Perth Amboy and Metuchen before moving to Bridgewater in 1988. He and his wife, Andrea have two grown children, Rachel and Alex. The family have been members of the JCC since it opened in 1999 and longtime members of Temple Sholom. Andrea is the JCC's Chief Financial Officer. After attending season one of Dancing with the JCC Stars, Randy started taking ballroom dance lessons and subsequently became the Mirror Ball winner in Season 2.

Randy Berkow

After a 36 year career working for Hess Corporation, Randy retired in April and has been spending his time taking Ballroom Dancing lessons and playing Bridge at the JCC. Randy is thrilled to return as Emcee of tonight's special event!

Our Esteemed Judges MICHELLE GARCED, along with her husband Emilio Garced, is Co-Franchisee/Owner and Director of three Arthur Murray Dance Centers in Central New Jersey: Highland Park, Green Brook and Manalapan. For more than 40 years she has been involved in the Ballroom dance world in one form or another -- first as a social dancer and student, then as an instructor/choreographer, manager/director and successful franchisee/owner. Whether training other dance professionals, coaching, competing, judging competitions, or opening and then developing and operating Studios, Michelle has always loved her “work.” Especially close to her heart, however, is the fact that she has personally taught thousands of people how to dance and is delighted at having affected a positive change in their lives through the art of social and competitive Ballroom dancing.

ELI GOLDSTEIN lives in Branchburg with his beautiful wife, Robyn and their three precious children, Seth, Justin and Danielle. He was the Season 3 Dancing with the JCC Stars Mirrorball winner... aka “The Postman”. Eli is the Youth Services & After School Director, and JOFEE fellow at the JCC. Eli is thrilled to be a part of his third Dancing with the Stars.

JILL HIRSCH has more than 20 years experience as a certified competition and pageant judge for national competitions in the areas of dance and baton. She holds NJTA and vocational certifications, and has training from Dance Educators of America and Broadway Dance Center. She has won numerous dance awards and has performed in Atlantic City, Walt Disney World and RCCL cruises. Jill also has choreographed pageants, local theater productions and competitive teams.

MAIRA PINEDA is a Certified Arthur Murray Professional Dance Instructor, Coach, Choreographer, Champion-level Competitor, Performer, Chief Judge/Contest Judge and Convention Coordinator. Her artistic background includes American Ballroom, West Coast Swing, Country & Western, Hustle, Salsa; Jazz, Ballet, competitive figure skating; piano and voice.

With over 20 years’ experience in the performing arts industry and deep history in corporate education, media communications, marketing/pr/branding, sales, and executive management, Maira also uses her distinctive talents as the Studios’ Director of Media Communications, Community Relations and Referral Marketing. Fellow artists, students, and leadership specialists describe Maira's unique contributions to the community as musically innovative, emotionally intriguing, and professionally invaluable.

The Professional Staff at The Arthur Murray Studios BOB GAI is an Arthur Murray Dance Professional who was introduced to folk, social, and competitive dancing at a very young age. His parents encouraged all the children to study many dance styles, like Bob’s specialties in jazz, lyrical, ballet, Haitian folk, International Latin, and, of course, American Ballroom. Bob has honed his performance expertise by touring with dance companies and choreographing professional troupes, supplemented his movement studies with Zumba certifications, and continues his own dance training with World Champion competitors. Bob’s passion for dance is most evident in his teaching: students adore his energy, compassionate approach, flair, and dedicated heart. Bob inspires others both on and off the dance floor to love the art of dance as much as he does.

CRYSTAL CAMERON is an Arthur Murray Dance Professional who got the “performance bug” early. She started dancing at a young age, like many, not in a Studio, but with her family. This early experience inspired her to explore studies in contemporary, Broadway musical theatre, modern, and social Latin styles. Crystal further pursued voice and theater performance opportunities at the Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament shows before changing over to American Smooth & Rhythm Ballroom. In the Studios, she balances her time among managing the administrative teams, personal dance studies, and assisting the newest students in understanding how to become good, comfortable, all-around social dancers. Crystal’s substantial contribution is revealed in her unwavering positivity, continual charm and uplifting spirit.

MEGAN EHNAT is an Arthur Murray Dance Professional with a background in ballet, jazz, lyrical, and tap, as well as American Ballroom. Before joining The Studios, her focus centered on youth/junior solo dancers, and Megan now uses that same patient attention and joyful approach in teaching both children and adults. She maintains her professional certifications in order to share enhanced knowledge with students and professional colleagues alike. As one of the Studio’s CORE® Rhythms dance fitness instructors, Megan also helps ensure that everyone can take advantage of the many benefits of learning to dance, especially physical, mental and emotional health.

DANNY HERNANDEZ is an Arthur Murray Dance Professional who first learned about the fun and delights of social dancing through friends and family and this translates through his teaching. His dance acumen took shape under the direction of Pierre Dulaine, Yvonne Marceau and Otto Cappel’s world-renown Dancing Classrooms. While his training grows as an American Ballroom specialist, Danny has never forgotten how good dancing should feel. His devotion to students’ learning goes beyond their knowing steps, style, or technique alone. Every student has remarked how much Danny truly listens to their concerns, puts them at ease, crafts their lessons to their understanding, and does his utmost to guarantee they gain a sense of confidence, grace and delight.

KAROL KALINOWSKI is an Arthur Murray Dance Professional who started dancing and competing in International Standard Ballroom in his youth.

His transition to the American Smooth & Rhythm Ballroom styles appeared seamless and swift. He continues to hone his expertise in a number of partner dance styles through coachings, certifications and professional performances. Karol competes with his professional partner Rosa Paredes, and they have been consistently achieving top placements. Most recently, they placed 3rd in the Rising Stars division against 41 other couples at the Las Vegas Superama, the largest annual competition in the Arthur Murray circuit. Students appreciate Karol’s elegant style, detailed feedback, commitment to their high achievement, as well as his witty and playful attitude.

JAZMIN NOVOA is an Arthur Murray Dance Professional who has been dancing pretty much since she could walk! Growing up in her household meant that music and dancing were always present. Along with American Smooth & Rhythm Ballroom partner dances, Jazmin’s specialties also include modern, African and ballet. Over the years, Jazmin has choreographed hundreds of amateur, professional, and pro-am routines and has coached many top-placing amateur couples and single dancers. But her skills extend far beyond competition students to social dancing and special performance dancers. Dozens of every-day people celebrating a special family occasion, those looking for a unique corporate team building experience, and fun-seeking social dancers, have all benefited from Jazmin’s teaching.

JONATHAN VASQUEZ is an Arthur Murray Dance Professional who started his dance career in hip hop and break dancing. His knowledge of Ballroom dancing, partner dance techniques, and teaching students of all ability levels has grown quickly and keeps on growing through professional studies and Arthur Murray certifications. Affectionately known to the students as “Johnny,” his commitment to expressing a love for music and dance is keenly apparent by the way he captivates every Studio student. Learning to dance takes courage, time, and practice, and Johnny proudly, happily and patiently educates every dancer who wants to share in his knowledge.
